Sir Terry Pratchett said that we have to start by learning to believe the little lies, and Tumblr said “I bet we could make up some more of those.”

Midnight Pals: Jokey Japes
[at unicorn fuck club] Terry Pratchett: I call it the story of the wacky fantasy world that’s funny Pratchett: I hope you’re all ready for some jolly jokes and japes Pratchett: but also Pratchett: if you’re not careful Pratchett: you just might learn something
JRR Tolkien: oh wonderful, I could use a good laugh! Pratchett: what if there was a fantasy world that was funny Tolkien: Pratchett: in a quintessentially British way Tolkien: hahahahah!!!!!
Pratchett: there’s a funny wizard who’s scared of things Pratchett: also some silly witches Pratchett: one of which is a horny grandma Pratchett: uh oh the horny grandma has a sexual thought Pratchett: I’m going to obliquely describe it for about 8 pages Pratchett: “er, um, er, that is to say, er, um” Tolkien: ha ha stop it! Stop it! You’re killing me! GRR Martin: haah it’s like the third person omniscient narrator is embarrassed! Haha!
Pratchett: what if a wizard was bad at his job Tolkien: hahahaa!!! Tolkien: it’s true! It’s true!! Tolkien: [slapping knee, howling with mirth] fantasy is so lame!!! Pratchett: but these jokes are about more than just fantasy Pratchett: if you look closely Practhett: you just might notice Pratchett: that deep down Pratchett: they’re about us Tolkien: hahah- Tolkien: what
Pratchett: it’s true Pratchett: these jokes aren’t just about genre tropes Pratchett: they’re about how the real world works Pratchett: similar to how in your story Sauron is an allegory for the evils of industrial- Tolkien: how dare you Tolkien: how fucking dare you

Top 10 books of 2023
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My favourite books of 2023, in no particular order:
A House With Good Bones - T. Kingfisher I was so disappointed when this didn’t win the goodreads choice awards for horror of the year. It’s so creepy and unsettling but in a uniquely T. Kingfisher way that somehow manages to still be funny and kind of cozy.
Wyrd Sisters - Terry Pratchett Of all the Discworld books I read this year, this one was definitely my favourite. I feel like Pratchett started to find his stride in this one, which I noticed more reading chronologically. Also it’s a spoof of Macbeth, and I’m a sucker for anything with Macbeth jokes.
The Bone Season (10th Anniversary Revised Edition) - Samantha Shannon I’ve loved the Bone Season series ever since I binged it in 2021, but the first book always fell a little flat for me. This revised edition fixed all the problems I had with the original. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a really unique fantasy/dystopia.
A Day of Fallen Night - Samantha Shannon I love Priory of the Orange Tree, so I was a little hesitant about a prequel, but ADOFN somehow managed to surpass Priory. It’s a  perfect high fantasy that spans many countries and characters, and features multiple sapphic characters, as well as bisexual, asexual, and other queer folks. This was my absolute favourite book of the year.
Stone Butch Blues - Leslie Feinberg One of the most important queer novels of the last 50 years. So glad I read this.
Tell Me I'm An Artist - Chelsea Martin This book found me at just the right time. It asks what it means to be an artist, and explores the intersections between the art world and privilege, and looks at the age old question; what is art?
Gideon the Ninth - Tamsyn Muir I am so late to the Locked Tomb hype, and I can’t believe it took me this long to pick up Gideon the Ninth! The Locked Tomb is quickly becoming one of my favourite fantasy series.
Heartstopper Volume 5 - Alice Oseman I waited all year for this instalment of the Heartstopper series to come out, and I devoured it in one day. Alice Oseman's work is always beautiful and heartfelt, and Volume 5 of Heartstopper is no exception.
The Well of Ascension - Brandon Sanderson I dipped my toes into Sanderson's work for the first time this year, and I started with the Mistborn series. While the prose is not the most complex, the characters and setting are what truly drew me in. So far, The Well of Ascension is my favourite of the trilogy.
Nettle and Bone - T. Kingfisher I read six T. Kingfisher books this year, with the first one being Nettle and Bone, and it's still one of my favourites. A weird dark fairytale with goblin markets, a quest to kill a prince, grave witches, an evil puppet, and a chicken possessed by a demon. What else could you want?

On the one side were the nation-builders, led by Lenin and Stalin; on the other side were the internationalists, led by Georgii Piatakov and Nikolai Bukharin. At the Eighth Party Congress in March 1919, the two sides clashed over the question of the right of national self-determination.3 Piatakov argued that “during a sufficiently large and torturous experience in the borderlands, the slogan of the right of nations to self-determination has shown itself in practice, during the social revolution, as a slogan uniting all counterrevolutionary forces.”4 Once the proletariat had seized power, Piatakov maintained, national self-determination became irrelevant: “It’s just a diplomatic game, or worse than a game if we take it seriously.”5 Piatakov was supported by Bukharin, who argued that the right to self-determination could only be invested in the proletariat, not in “some fictitious so-called ‘national will.’ ”6
Lenin had clashed with Piatakov and others on this issue before and during the revolution.7 He now answered this renewed challenge with characteristic vigor. Nationalism had united all counterrevolutionary forces, Lenin readily agreed, but it had also attracted the Bolsheviks’ class allies. The Finnish bourgeoisie had successfully “deceived the working masses that the Muscovites [Moskvaly], chauvinists, Great Russians want[ed] to oppress the Finns.” Arguments such as Piatakov’s served to increase that fear and therefore strengthen national resistance. It was only “thanks to our acknowledgement of [the Finns’] right to self-determination, that the process of [class] differentiation was eased there.” Nationalism was fueled by historic distrust: “The working masses of other nations are full of distrust [nedoverie] towards Great Russia, as a kulak and oppressor nation.” Only the right to self-determination could overcome that distrust, Lenin argued, but Piatakov’s policy would instead make the party the heir to Tsarist chauvinism: “Scratch any Communist and you find a Great Russian chauvinist. . . . He sits in many of us and we must fight him.”8

So hot, I’m frothing at the mouth
Tumblr media
Young Johnny Lawrence:
You met at school, well, he saw you at school, you were too busy fighting the girls and their normal antics.
You were playing soccer with others while Johnny was too busy trying to catch the eyes of various other females as he stripped his shirt.
He tried to find every chance to get to you, and it wasn’t until he purposely slammed right into you with the claim of not seeing you while going to catch a football, did he finally accomplish his goal.
Knocking you to the ground, you easily got pissed and to his dismay, called him out on his bullshit:
“You did that on purpose, you Ass!”
“I didn’t do anything! It was a simple mistake, here let me help you up?”
“No, I got it myself, and stay the hell out of my way!”
From that day on, he was hooked. He didn’t know if it was your dominance and strength or your cutting edge demeanor; either way, he wanted you. BAD.
It was his duty to keep up on this game of cat and mouse, and each time, the blame was pinned on him (rightfully so) and turned away.
“Watch where you’re going!”
“Go torture someone else who’s more into you.”
“Leave me alone!”
It didn’t seem to matter what you did, he would always come back with these huge puppy dog eyes and a grin that could cut glass.
Maybe that’s what made you start to give into his charms?
When you finally allow him into your life, take you on dates and such, he often tries to pester you just to get you fired up. He thinks it’s hot, you think it’s utterly annoying and misleading.
“You’re trying too hard, Lawrence.”
“You’re pushing on the line of clingy.”
“Can I take a breather?”
Either way, you guys soon find a dynamic. Although you may seem self-centered and cruel to most, Johnny knows it’s just a perk that comes with the territory.
Whether this behavior was learned at home or by the way the world works, Johnny loves it and basically basks in it. It makes you tough, and like Sensei Kreese taught him, that’s what you need to survive; a skill Johnny has yet to master.
Tumblr media
Older Johnny Lawrence:
As Johnny had aged, he learned the skill of having to fend for one’s self before tending to anyone else. This asset had instantly peaked his interest upon meeting you.
You, getting the job rather easily, tended to the children in the Cobra Kai dojo when class was in session, helping to guide and help instruct every motion the senseis provided.
Like younger Johnny, older version of him also found this very endearing and headstrong, allowing him to feel safe and comfortable around you, knowing you could handle yourself in most situations.
Yes, being egocentric is very selfish or self-regarding, but it works in his world. In a world where John Kreese and Terry Silver reside in, hell, even Daniel Larusso.
However, catch Johnny on a bad day, and that’s his favorite topic to target:
“You always so damn full of yourself?”
“Only when it means warding off self-centered pricks like you. You have stereotypes written all over your forehead!”
“You’re one to talk!”
“Like you have much to say in defense?”
In light of the topic, you’re both egocentric but don’t like to admit it (much to our dismay)
Besides your personalities constantly crashing, they also mesh well, having similar attributes that make you work.
ESPECIALLY when it comes to going head-to-head with Kreese and Silver.
Johnny loves to step back and watch you fire on them, knowing that in the end, you’re seeking comfort for yourself of all things. You don’t let them corrupt you, which keeps making them come back, but Johnny knows where you stand.
You’re loyal, and he couldn’t ask for anything better than a Bad Bitch like you.
