The Bagwells of Marlfield could trace their arrival in Ireland to John Bagwell (Backwell), a captain in Cromwell’s New Model Army. Marlfield House was the residence of the Bagwells, a wealthy and politically influential Irish Unionist family in south Tipperary from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries.
It is located about three kilometres west of the town of Clonmel on the northern bank of…

Awaiting Restoration
In need of repair: the conservatory attributed to Richard Turner which is attached to the west side of Marlfield, County Tipperary. This house was built for the Bagwell family in c.1785-90. The conservatory here is a later addition, thought to have been added around 1835, which is two years later than that at Colebrooke. Although Marlfield was burnt by Anti-Treaty forces during the Civil War (it…

Best outdoor dining locations in Ireland
Ireland has some incredible outdoor dining locations that can be enjoyed whilst on Ireland vacations. From country house hotels to award winning restaurants and castles in Ireland there really is something for everyone. With this in mind we have have compiled into a list of outdoor dining options for your enjoyment. Each of these eateries can be enjoyed whilst on Ireland tours however pre booking is advised.
1. Tequila Jacks, Cork
This mexican bar and restaurant is a Cork staple , they are renowned for their bright robust flavours and delicious cocktail menu. They have recently installed these beautiful pods which are now a remarkable addition to the boardwalk. Enjoy this incredible river-side experience. We strongly recommend the beef short rib tacos or the phenomenal halloumi burger.
2. Cask, Cork
Another Cork based gem! Cask is located in the city’s Victorian quarter. Sister company to the famous Greenes, this incredible cocktail bar sets the standard for creative and unusual blends and won a vast amount of awards for their efforts. Sit beside their very own waterfall and enjoy the delicious range of bites or boards they serve to pair with their delectable drinks. May life always be so good!
3. The Duck Restaurant at the Marlfield House . Wexford
Located just outside Gorey in Co. Wexford, this restored sandstone terraced courtyard and potting shed is a beautiful dining experience. Enjoy your meal looking out at the kitchen garden full of fresh herbs, fruit and vegetables and blooming roses. This restaurant has seen huge industrial acclaim named by Georgina Campbell as atmospheric restaurant of the year. As the name suggests their crispy duck confit salad is to die for and so is their Orzo risotto.
4. The Tap Room , Donegal
If you are looking for the very best in stonebaked pizza and craft beer simply look no further. Their pizza dough is homemade daily and can be gluten free on request. Pair this with a local Kinnegar brew and some good company and you are on your way to an incredibly enjoyable evening. Sometimes restaurants can overcomplicate things, this simple but perfectly executed pizza and pint combo will leave a smile on your face.
5. Saba , Baggot Street Dublin
This amazing Thai and Vietnamese restaurant has a new secret garden filled with funky graffiti, italian seating, church pews and festoon lighting. With an awning currently being added to the garden this is set to be a popular outdoor location coming into the winter months. The goal here was to replicate the Thai street hawkers dining scene and they have done an excellent job at replicating this atmosphere. Do not miss the black pepper squid and their exceptional Pad Thai.

Here’s my mini version of my latest commission for Marlfield House Hotel. It’s mounted on a background which is the same colour as the wall it will hang on. Once all the colours have been agreed upon I can start work on the real thing which will be 1 metre square and of course have lots more detail and tonal values. I’m looking forward to getting started - hope they like the colours!!
