WarioWare: Double Up!
One day, Wario discovers that there’s a popular new video game company called Hotcake Studios- so popular, in fact, that WarioWare Inc. is losing business to them! Even worse, when he gets his hands on one of their games he discovers that it has the same microgame formula as his games, and that the company is owned by none other than his Treasure Hunting rival Captain Syrup. And then to make matters even worse, when he goes to confront her about so obviously muscling in on his business, she reveals that she’s also got her own development team of colorful characters…and each one is a clear direct counterpart to one of the WarioWare Crew. Or in Wario’s words, “You’re not just bootlegging my games, you’re bootlegging my flunkies, too!”
After the whole thing nearly comes to blows, the two strike a deal; each company will make a game, both with the same set of themes(and with each set of counterparts working on the same theme. So for example, Ashley and whoever her counterpart is both make Fantasy-themed microgames), price, and release date, and at the end of the year they’ll see which game sold more copies. Loser has to become a subsidiary of the winner.
I’m not sure how exactly that would translate into a gameplay gimmick (I’m a story guy not a gameplay guy), but as far as story mode goes each level’s story would involve the WarioWare Host getting into some sort of competition with their Hotcake counterpart, some friendlier than others.
The actual counterparts are:
Wario: Captain Syrup, obviously
Mona: Vanessa, that one singer who had a rivalry with her in Touched
Jimmy T: Jenny K, a semi-famous breakdancer
Dribble and Spitz: A Wolf and Bird racecar-driving duo named Howler and Chirpz
Kat and Ana: A pair of Ninji Twins named Shuri and Ken
Orbulon: Tatanga, because why not
9-Volt: A fourth-grade gamer girl named M-Byte
18-Volt: M-Byte’s older brother G-Byte
5-Volt: M-Byte and G-Byte’s dad, K-Byte
13-Amp: A friend of M and G named 64-Bit
Fronk: a Wanderin’ Goom, just named Goom
Dr. Crygor: Rival inventor Professor Boreal
Penny: Boreal’s niece, Hailey
Mike: A singing Piranha Plant named Polly
Doris 1: A robot butler named Vincent
Ashley and Red: A bubbly Magical Girl named Sora and her shapeshifting rabbit friend Violet
Young Cricket: Goombario, who’s recently become a student of The Master
Master Mantis: The Master, from Paper Mario
Lulu: Leo, that one ninja kid with animal-based powers that Kat and Ana fought in their level of Get It Together
The eventual end result is a draw. Both games somehow sold an exactly equal number of units. While this news initially shocks and infuriates Wario and Syrup, they take it as a sign that this whole argument just isn't worth their time and resolve to just more-or-less ignore each-others gaming ventures. Meanwhile, most of their employees have actually made friends with each-other, not really caring about the competition or their bosses' bad history to begin with.

New Digital Circus characters just dropped!
Jolli
A weird critter with stretchy arms. Ironically, Jolli is typically rather grumpy. She's curt, rude, and generally standoffish at best, and physically violent at worst. Jolli doesn't typically hold back her attitude with the others in the circus, save a few exceptions with Ragatha and Pomni. Jax and Grem get the worst of her attitude.
On the rare occasion she's in a good mood however, it's practically night and day. When she's feeling good, Jolli can be incredibly friendly and enjoys making jokes.
Jolli's something of a thrill seeker as well. So long as the adventures don't interrupt a nap or something, Jolli is typically very eager to participate in Caine's adventures. Especially if she gets to fight things.
After reconnecting with Roxie, Jolli's personality has made a near 180, with her living up to her name much more frequently. Though Jax and Grem still get rather frequent beatings for their antics.
Jolli's arms don't seem to have a limit to how far they can stretch, at least not one she's found. On top of that, despite her small size, Jolli is surprisingly strong.
Jolli's inspired by several things, namely old Slamasaurs plush dinosaurs wrestlers and Sonic Unleashed.
Roxie
The most recent member of the Cricus. Roxie arrived only a few weeks after Pomni. The two share the same nervous disposition. However, Roxie adapts to Circus life more quickly than Pomni, in no small part thanks to Jolli.
Roxie is generally rather friendly and patient, though she does have her limits. She tries to be helpful on adventures, whilst trying to stay out of direct danger herself.
Though she never moves passed wanting to leave the Circus, Roxie tries to remind herself of the positives that come with being there to help keep herself from going nuts.
Though her avatar comes with one, Roxie has absolutely no idea how to play the guitar. However, that doesn't stop her from using it as a weapon on adventures.
Roxie's based off Betty Spaghetty and a general 80's vibe.
In the outside world, Jolli and Roxie were in a relationship. Jolli was the first to enter the Circus, having been stuck there for a year or so before Roxie's arrival.
Due to the memory issues caused by the circus, and entirely new bodies, it took the two a bit to realize who the other was, but once they did they became inseparable.
Beta Jolli
Beta design for Jolli. Jolli and Roxie are both au versions of my main two characters, Jackie and Kat who are originally sci-fi characters.
With Jolli wanted to work the sci-fi thing in, as well as make a fitting character for TADC so thought up the beta design. Inspired by the Poo-chi toys form the early 2000's and the og Playstation and Gamecube.
She was, on top of a robot cat, a fully functioning game console. Caine would've made several games that she could run, most being rom hacks of already existing games. The games were made as rewards for completing adventures, or as the goal of an adventure.
When I decided to bring Roxie in, I knew I wanted to keep her and Jolli in a relationship, but was having trouble seeing the tiny robot cat with the mostly normal human, so re-did Jolli.
I think I might re-work the concept into a fourth character cause I do really like the design still.
The games Caine made are Jax Adventure(Reskin of Sonic but with Jax), Chess Wars(TF2-esque chess based Class shooter for Kinger and Queenie), Pomni 64(Reskin of Mario 64 but with Pomni), and Maze Bubble(Reskin of packman but with Bubble).
Regardless of what I do with Beta Jolli, the games still existi n my own little au.

Wario in 2021 Retrospective
2021 has been a simply wild ride for Wario. After 2020 brought some surprising Wario content, even with the pandemic, 2021 managed to trump that with a ton of stuff to talk about. We even got enough to be able to go month by month:
January:
- Ore Dayo! Wario Dayo! Is confirmed to recieve a french translation.
- Wario-Man and Cannoli are featured in the promo for a facial hair themed spirit board event.
February:
- The Dr. Mario World renders for Wario, Waluigi and Baby Wario finally get a proper release.
- Fronk is featured on the promo for the Hello, Sunshine Spirit Event.
- Wario, complete with Shoulder Charge, is featured on the Grand Slam online tourney promo.
- Mario Golf Super Rush (complete with Wario) and Wario themed items in Animal Crossing New Horizons, are announced.
- A designer that worked on Bomberman GB shared info regarding how Wario got added to the localized release, Wario Blast.
March:
- The heavily Wario inspired indie title Antonball Deluxe, is released on Steam.
- We get a first look at Ninja Hideway from Mario Kart Tour. The Tour ended up being strangely unrelated to Wario, but the course still has Wario elements all over.
April:
The only month without anything of note.
May:
- Big Band from Skullgirls recieves Wario themed alt colors.
- A Waluigi themed Switch Pro Controller is announced.
- Wario and Waluigi’s renders for Super Rush are finally revealed and we even got a sudden, additional new Waluigi render, that was casually shown during the Nintendo Mini Switch Lite unboxing.
- Elon Musk dresses up as Wario for a SNL skit. Waluigi and a wiki page mentioning Mona, Jimmy T and Dr Crygor are also there. While very...not good, it is newfound mainstream recognition for the character.
- A second render for Wario in Mario Golf Star Rush, has surfaced.
June:
- Cannoli is featured yet again on a new Spirit Event promo.
- Nintendo's E3 2021 presentation reveals not only Mario Party Superstars, which Wario and Waluigi are naturally part of, but also WarioWare Get It Together!
- Mario Golf Super Rush releases. Not only are Wario and Waluigi major parts of the intro once more, but they also get the most meaty story mode role out of any non-Mii character.
July:
- Nintendo continues to use Wario and Waluigi as the prime characters to promote Super Rush, including a home screen news tab, commenting on their stylin' looks.
August:
- More Get It Together footage finally is released. We also get first news on pre-order bonuses.
- Pyoro is on a new Spirit Board Event promo.
- Wario starts his Twitter take-over of the Super Mario UK account. This one would last for quite some time even after the game launched and also had a retrospective, heavily focusing on the Wario Land series.
- WarioWare pins are revealed to be new My Nintendo rewards.
September:
- New trademarks for Wario and Waluigi's emblems, for merchandise purposes, mysteriously came up.
- Waluigi is on a new Spirit Board Event promo.
- WarioWare Get It Together is released and Nintendo releases a special artwork to celebrate it, a day before launch.
- WarioWare Get It Together recieves a special theme in Tetris 99.
- Nintendo posts new Ko Takeuchi art of Wario, Kat, Ana, Young Cricket, Penny, Ashley, Red, 9-Volt, 18-Volt and 13-Amp, to celebrate GiT's successful launch.
- Nintendo releases a Switch Home Screen news article covering every Switch game to feature Wario so far. Even Wario's Woods on the SNES app get's a mention.
- Following GiT's launch, Nintendo went on to give it regular exposure on their social media accounts, all the way up December. This includes a real and a mock accolades trailer and a 30 Reasons to play the game trailer, voiced by Martinet no less.
- Takaya Imamura of F-Zero fame, posts a picture of Wario he drew on Twitter.
- Dr. Mario 64, in all it's Wario Land 3 glory, is revealed to come to the Switch via the N64 app, as part of the NSO Expansion pack....the excitement would be dampered by a couple things, but seeing the game finally be re-released and so early in the N64 line-up no less, is still big.
October:
- Waluigi recieves a Vampire alt in Mario Kart Tour.
- Mario Party Superstars footage drops, including a series of ads with the japanese idol group King&Prince, even featuring two members of the group playing as Wario and Waluigi and wearing their caps.
- Wario is in the Sora reveal trailer. Minor and easy to miss, but it's more than he usually gets.
- The Shake King and Wario-Man are featured on a new Spirit Board Event promo.
- Mario Party Superstars is released, giving us one more major dose of Wario this year. We even get a never before released Wario render from Mario Party 2, in the games' credits.
November:
- Wario himself is on the promo for the final new Spirit Board event, closing that book on a fitting note.
- A WarioWare Washi Tape Set is added to the My Nintendo rewards.
- WarioWare GiT is revealed to be a nominee at the game awards. It didn't win, but it is a major bit of mainstream recognition.
- Out of nowhere, Nintendo's Youtube accounts release a spanish version of Penny's theme from GiT, that is not in the game proper.
- The final Super Rush update introduces the All-Star Summit course and Wario & Waluigi have a section there.
December:
- WarioWare GIT recieves another Switch Home Screen article, all to itself.
- The author of Dr. Mario-kun releases the spin-off WarioWare manga on his blog to read online, for a limited time. It's been preserved.
- Nintendo releases a Ko Takeuchi christmas themed picture, with Wario, Red, Penny, Orbulon and Spitz.
And that's purely the official stuff, the fandom was no slouch either. To name some major things:
- We got the incredible Wario's Day Off animation
- A WarioWare skin mod for Friday Night Funkin'.
- Wario was released for Render96.
- The powerful Miitopia Switch Mii Maker brought us some really amazing Wario series Miis.
- Wario was featured in a lot of Smash Remix trailers.
- Wario Land 4 Parallel World was released.
- A Kat and Ana mod for Mario Kart Wii is finally being worked on.
- We got some nice WarioWare Gold and Touched sprite rip advancements
And that's on top of mountains of fan work in general. WarioWare obviously got the biggest boost, but Wario Land was no slouch either. This was actually a really good year to be a Shokora fan, given how much fan content she got and even Sal Out, Sarissa and Rudy got some really nice stuff here and there.
On a personal note, this was also a big Wario year for me in general. Thanks to my new laptop, I was finally able to delve into Brawl mods and all their beautiful Wario content and while it's true that I discover new Wario stuff all the time, this year takes the cake:
- I got my hands on lots of spanish Wario marketing material.
- I have found a lot of pre-release Wario Land, Wario's Woods and Mario & Wario stuff.
- I got a lot of Club Nintendo and Nintendo Power scans, which brought things like a in-character Wario World guide and new Wario's Woods art.
- I found out about Wario's car being in Tomodachi Life.
- I now have scans of two of the old Mario & Wario children's books.
And that's on top of other basic Wario media, like a rare WarioWare Touched wallpaper and guide exclusive Wario Land art. Lots of listing off stuff and that’s because there really was that much here in every area.
This year is also where I brought the Wario blog to Twitter as well, to great success (and started a Shokora side-account on top) and where I finally wrote up my Source Gaming Wario article counter, which I am genuinely proud of, especially since I am seeing increasingly more people quote it.
All in all, 2021 was a spectacular Wario year and I hope at least some of that momentum carries into 2022, for his big anniversary.

I was gonna rant about video game sound effects but I can't make you hear any of the examples...
SO INSTEAD I WILL MAKE IT A YOU ISSUE
Sound effects are what make games feel alive, you can have the best controls, the cleanest and clearest animations, absolute banger's and the antidote but without sound effects they all fall flat just like my dead body. Sound effects started out as doots and dots, some of the most iconic sound effects of all time are (Mario's Jump, Pac Man eating honestly a lot of Namco stuff, Sonic's rings, Mega Man dying so on), and this lasted from the devout of video games all the way to the third generation of consoles in which cds became standarized (ahem 64) allowing for larger files; video, textures, models and of course sound. But that's boring history stuff I am here to tell you why they're the unsung hero.
Sound effects allow you to process an action with better precession than just visuals, want a good example? Fighting game tournaments have noise cancelling headphones because when playing the game the contestants need to be able to hear the small sounds to react optimally to attacks. Due to sound being so diverse it means lots of information can be portrayed through it, if you heard a firey sound you would assume fire, and this includes emotion. While music carries lots of emotion imagine the dark souls YOU DIED screen without the mocking sound effect, imagine if when you grabbed a coin in Mario there was nothing, a headshot in most fps games but no bullet sounded nor did a hit sound play, you clear a line in tetris and no sound, defeating an enemy in an rpg but you didn't make an impact sound and so on. All these small sounds evoke a reaction from you that elevate the visuals and emphasize the mood the game was trying to create it pushes you to do something without needing to explain itself, you grab a coin because the sound is positive, you try not to get hit because the sound is negative and then you connect that to the visuals, it's like a mini tutorial based off of pure common sense.
Lastly there is so many satisfying sounds to find in all games where you would ussually miss them, it's standard for fighting games to have different sound effects for each character and each of their moves these while short really give the moves weight but most people miss it over the awesome music pumping you on, rpgs have different sound effects for each spell, attack, crits, taking damage, etc and some sound really crisp. So next time you sit down and play any game maybe tune down the music and appreciate the sounds games make who knows it might benifit you.

At the top of the heap of people whose names shall live in infamy are GOP Senators Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz, who led the coup in the Senate to overturn the will of the people. After the fires started burning, Ted Cruz very poorly paid lip service to trying to cool things down, after he had helped commit the arson. Hawley could hardly be bothered to do that.
Those two garbage fascists were joined in objections to Arizona and/or Pennsylvania by Tommy Tuberville, Roger Marshall, John Kennedy, Rick Scott, brand new Wyoming Senator Cynthia Lummis, and Cindy Hyde-Smith. Let the record show that these people went ahead and kept up their objections even after the US Capitol building was attacked by domestic terrorists they and their shithole Dear Leader had incited.
In the Senate, it was only those assholes.
In the House, though? Holy shit. They objected to Arizona and somehow even more of them voted to sustain the objection to Pennsylvania in the wee hours of Wednesday morning, as if yesterday's terrorism put a spring in their step, as if the blood in the hallways of the Capitol gave them sustenance.
Again, all of this was after the terrorist attack.
And in the House it wasn't just Arizona and Pennsylvania either. Reps like Louie Gohmert stood up to object to other states too, even though the GOP senators who had originally planned to support those challenges had put down their guns and agreed to end the standoff peacefully. (It was particularly pleasing to watch Vice President Mike Pence glare at Gohmert, who just got finished unsuccessfully suing Pence to make him overturn the election, and tell him his objection to the electors in Wisconsin "MAY NOT BE ENTERTAINED," since he couldn't get even the Senate's dumbest Republican Ron Johnson to sign his treason permission slip anymore.)
Overall, 139 House GOP members voted to object to the electors from Arizona and/or Pennsylvania.
These are their names. They should not be allowed around your children, you should kick them out of your chicken restaurant, and they should always and forevermore be referred to as seditious traitors to democracy in the United States of America. They really should be expelled from Congress.
They're listed by state, to make it helpful for people to know which chicken restaurants to ban them from, specifically.
