April 8th The second day of the Madrid pre-party

Here is Käärijä’s Instagram stories from the morning after, he is very happy and lively (until someone spat on him, don’t do that). I think yesterday went well?

This one. I don’t even know which one I’m more embarrassed for. Käärijä is trying sneakily glance at Bojan and when he notices that Joker Out is moving he slowly turns his head to their direction and locks his eyes to Bojan’s. We don’t even have to talk about Bojan’s reaction. (He btw gives a hug to Käärijä’s friend/translator). Why are both of them so extra already, they JUST MET

(Also sidenote, at this point in interviews Käärijä has added a new favorite Eurovision 2023 song to his list and I think you can guess which one right yes yes of course it is Slovenia.)

I don’t know, I’m still not sure if Bojan liked Käärijä that much right after he met him… oh here Bojan doing impression of him the day after he met him. (GO WATCH: Carpe Diem Series / Ch6 – Madrid, it’s so cute)

And finally this picture, I think it was taken very late in the evening because Bojan is drinking. Look at those smiles!!

I haven’t watched much Eurovision this year but I was thinking that Ghost (the band) would have a winning chance if they did Mary On A Cross. They’re so theatrical and camp but the song is a legitimately brilliant pop song. Metal-Abba.

Unexpectedly, the Charles lovers are also in a meltdown about the coronation video and the Eurovision appearance, because apparently W&C are making it too much about themselves and showcasing their wealth. Goodness. At least as someone who supports the whole monarchy (obviously I have my faves though), I win no matter what content we get! So done with the in-fighting though.

Jesus Mary and Joseph, can there be one normal day in this fandom? I'm so done with all the petty drama istg, it's become so toxic!

Honestly same I do have favs but I generally like everyone except a few members which I have talked about here. All this ridiculous stuff just sucks all the fun out of royal watching, and I have genuinely stopped going on places like instagram/twitter nowadays because I know some of the accounts I followed or liked will be having arguments over ridiculous stuff.

Also charles and Cam literally got a whole ass coronation with a gold carraige, diamond crowns and everything (as It was their prerogative) how is anything or anyone gonna try and take attention away from that. I just feel like certain people on both sides need to go out and touch some grass with the way they are and let royal watching be a nice experience again for the rest of us.

And how was the eurovision appearance bad? She showcased her piano talent on a music competition as part of the background choir to support Ukraine?????????? And bold of those people to criticise Cat when didn't charles and Cam did something with American idol? (I'm not sure coz I didn't see it?)

Omg can you imagine the OCS watching Eurovision religiously (ha!) and everybody cheering for there home countries and Camila loves it so, so much and Lilith is just sitting there next to her thinking that if this is the best Europe can come up with maybe they deserve Armageddon…

i think it'd be like camila and ava are the ones that are originally really into it and consequently make everybody in their 5 mile radius watch it as well

mother superion will see one episode and then unashamedly admit that she's intrigued and its "whimsical and fun" and she's tuning in with cam and ava from that point on, actually voting on her phone and all

bea would obviously be roped in by ava and then get decently culture shocked by some of the contestants (because i mean imagine growing up in some homophobic conservative family, later becoming a nun etc etc and then seeing a verka serduchka-esque performance, thats like giving a victorian orphan mcdonalds sprite)

mary would only root for the most unhinged, campy, needlessly extra queer coded contestants (she's just like me fr) and be visibly bored during the ones that arent "interesting enough"

and lilith in lilith fashion says its dumb and she's not watching that, because its a waste of time, but then she will linger in the doorway and around the couch the entire episode & ask questions if she missed something ("who is this?" "where's __?" "is this a new song? no i dont Care, dont be stupid-")

👻 What is your wildest headcanon?

Me deciding that Chateau de Peyrol is ridiculously haunted has to be somewhere up on the list -- no canon evidence to support it, but I like to think of Lazare being totally oblivious to his house being a setting from a gothic novel while Ronan is constantly going "Lazare. Lazare. The portrait is staring at me, Lazare."

Lazare secretly loving gossip is based purely on that one moment in the French production when Louis and Marie's marriage is breaking down in front of everyone and Lazare IMMEDIATELY comes in to tell Louis that, by the way, there's a full-on revolt. It's not AS out of pocket, but it is definitely leaning on the cracky side of things, but it also is always funny to have a Lazare who is very critical of the hypocrisy of Versailles, the shallow obsession with gossip, the backstabbing, the intrigues...while he is actively dying on his country estate because he can't get all the hot gossip.

For my Irish mythological things, I decided at some point that the Fomoiri, aka the notoriously terrifying group of people that have been, at various points, described (not by me) as demonic sea monsters who represent pure chaos and destruction, as well as representing various Scandinavian invaders, go out for karaoke once a month as a team building exercise. Themed nights have included ABBA, Britney Spears, Disney, and Taylor Swift. Manannán mac Lir, who is on the other side, gets privileges to come along because he's best friends with Tethra (for Disney night, they did a duet version of "Under the Sea"). They also do a Eurovision watch party once a year, where they root for their various countries of origin (Bres, since he's half Irish and half Norwegian, will root for whoever seems to be winning, going for the UK when he's depressed with both. He might or might not have been culpable for Dustin the Turkey's appearance, which is objectively the most heinous thing he's done.)

🥳 Why did you start writing fanfic?

The very first things I wrote were what I would later recognize were self insert fanfics, where me and my various OCs based on my toys would go into various films and books I was reading to save the day. The Mummy, Barbie: The Princess and the Pauper, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Lord of the Rings were the favorites back in the day (which...really highlights the kind of kid I was), when I was about 5-8. Fanfic, in some form or another, is a natural part of who I am. If I didn't write it, I'd suffocate.

💌 Is there a favorite trope you like to write?

I have been roundly mocked for my tendency to use Significant Chess Games in my fanfic -- you can make a bingo card off of it. In my defense, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

On a broader scale...it's interesting because when I was younger, I was more inclined to say that I was writing redemption arcs or enemies to lovers arcs, and I think, to some extent, that holds true, but to other extents, there's a lot more in terms of shades of gray -- I work with characters who are at odds with one another for one reason or another and then get them to a point of, frankly, dangerous codependency, and let the dice fall where they may as far as whether it's truly a case of "redemption" or "corruption" or just "becoming increasingly tired over time." Is Ronan a traitor to the revolution for marrying Lazare? Is Margrid betraying some part of who she is by falling in love with Orléans? Would Emma be betraying something if she joined the Tango Korrupti? Is Kitrye betraying her sense of morality by falling in love with Raphael and, honestly, vice versa? I don't know -- I can see why they're irredeemable to some people, no one *has* to forgive the villainous characters for doing villainous things, or the heroic characters for falling for the villainous characters, and I'm not particularly interested in that side of things, but I can also understand exactly why they refuse to give up or compromise, too. That's a very broad arc, but it's definitely a question that I'm always returning to. "The horror was for love" and all that.

My opinion changes all the time, but at the moment it's "Bloody Mary" and "Boss Witch". I love the mystery in both of these maps.

"Dark Horse" from Just Dance 2015! Uuu, that's such a good map! I remember that me and my cousin had a problem with setting up the ps4 camera and we choose this one as a test, because "it looks easy!". Well at that time - it wasn't for us, lmao

This should be an interesting one. Since 1999 was the first year without the orchestra and the language rule, 1998 is going to look and sound VERY different from the contests I'm used to.

Croatia Classic costume change and classic Balkan ballad. Danijela has very good control over her voice, but the staging (specifically her hand movements, but also that one long shot) was sort of awkward. She looked and felt out of place on that stage, especially in the black outfit. Melody also seemed... not simple, but overly familiar? To me it felt like it was composed out of bits of other songs that I know and can't remember and that put me off a little bit. But not in a formulaic way. I dunno.

Greece Forgettable but not unenjoyable rock song. I don't like her voice nearly as much though.

France Loving the chill vibes here and Marie is fun to watch. I really liked the verses in this. Good stage presentation - although, I don't know if she was sick or just has a naturally raspy voice but something seemed slightly off about her singing.

Spain This man is like... if a classic rom-com protagonist with a boombox was sopping wet pathetic and also John Green. Not a bad song. I like the sentiment I suppose. There's this extremely 1990s thing going on with the synths that I'm not crazy about.

Switzerland Twee ending is twee but otherwise I really like this song. I fuck with the violin and Gunvor sounds good and she looks good in that dress (in the long shots. In the closer shots I keep getting distracted because it looks like she just wore a bra onstage). However. Those backup dancers needed to chill. Specifically there's this shoulder shrug thing they do right at the beginning that just does not fit the vibes and it BOTHERED me.

Slovakia Good to know that the terrible VFX overlays have been around for 25+ years. Thanks Slovakia, hated that. It's a beautiful language and the song was pretty enough, if not all that engaging, so it's a shame that parts of it were too low for Kristina. She had to whisper the first two notes of this one repeating phrase which sounded just a little creepy.

Poland This had a really strong opening and honestly I do like this song a lot but the lead singer just isn't bringing it vocally. She's not bad. I just don't think that head voice as a register really works here. It makes the song seem low-energy and her tone quality seem just the littlest bit shrill.

Israel I think this win was deserved. I don't really like the nasally tq that Dana has, but she's a good performer. Like a lot of other high ranking songs from this era, I don't think I've ever heard this song in full before, but the verses hold up to the chorus and everything feels consistent with the greater idea of the song. Good use of the background lights. And, also, shoutouts to the backing singers. They sounded good and the sound mixing for them was done really well... which, in Eurovision, is not always easy...

Germany "German Austin Powers runs into the audience, caresses several men, climbs onto the side stage" is something that I should hate, but I kind of love it. Like fuck this guy but also fuck, this guy! The whole thing with the cowbells was also very funny. Love a good Stefan Raab song.

Malta Chiara is such a good singer. Like she just sounds good and satisfying everywhere in the song no matter the volume, emotion, or register. WHICH IS WHY IT'S A DAMN SHAME THAT THIS SONG BORES ME TO TEARS. If you have a good singer (and good staging), give her a good song and maybe an actually attractive dress, cmon Malta I know you can do it she looked so good in 2005.

Hungary It just doesn't do it for me. IDK.

Slovenia This one too. It really didn't capture my attention. Although better than Hungary, I think.

Ireland Not bad. Clearly following on from Katrina and the Waves. I wasn't expecting her to have such a deep voice, but she sounds pretty good! Lol at the completely abandoned keyboard just sitting on the stage though.

Portugal I love the instrumentation here. The song is cute but the vocals and the way it draws back during the sung portions is less fun than the bits where it's just the bagpipes and the guitar.

Romania Malina doesn't come into herself here until that high note. It's an OK song but she's too quiet for it and the staging is too simple.

UK This is fun, I'm into it. Not my favorite by any means and not particularly a standout but it's good.

Cyprus I really enjoy how anthemic that chorus is. The backup singers were also used really well, in a way that made them sound like a full choir rather than five people.

Netherlands Queen Edsilia! Sounds good looks good feels good. No notes.

Sweden I'm not sold on it. She sounds ok I guess, but isn't she a country singer? I feel like maybe I would have been more into it if they'd sent her in a genre she did more? Iunno.

Belgium She's so cute and the whole package just comes together. Not usually my sort of song, but after the run of mostly boring songs I'm so refreshed by how much I enjoy this.

Finland I will be honest, I don't fully know what's going on here and I don't know how I feel about it.

Norway Cute. I like the vibes on this guy, how the camerawork incorporates the live orchestra, and the color scheme.

Estonia For some reason was not expecting this to be a piano ballad, but it's good.

Turkey Looks nice sounds nice. At this point my attention has started to wane quite a bit so unless it's super good or super bad I don't have much to say.

FYROM Wasn't expecting to like it, I don't hate it! Not the worst debut they could have had.

Miscellaneous Thoughts that first interval act is such a colonial project. i think all the people angsting about how uk-heavy this year's hosting was should go back and watch eurovision 1998. "ok, we're going to explain the tiebreak rules" *proceeds to have the most competitive voting sequence of any eurovision i've ever watched*. i don't think they have explained the tiebreak rules on air since then, maybe not even when voting systems changed and the tiebreak rules also changed. it's giving the abba video they showed right before sweden swept the juries in 2023. a bit confused by the 2 separate voting graphics used, where one is a map and the other is the scoreboard with the winning country's flag waving. similar designs were also used in '99 and i was curious about it then too. my suspicion is that the map graphic is displayed while they reorganize the scoreboard to show standing order instead of running order but i'm not 1000% certain about that. good to know that greece and cyprus really have been exchanging douze since the dawn of time, especially considering that the crowd anticipated both of those douzes lmao nah, but like. this was such a strong year and it was so quintessentially chaotic and eurovision. the predictable douzes, the close voting, no one being able to find dana for like five minutes after the announcement. terry wogan was actually integrated into the hosting well, which graham norton was... not. i love it. this is one i'd love to watch again or recommend to people who haven't seen older contests before.

Camila: is Italian-Irish she goes HARD for Eurovision, she will gather the gang around the TV and make them watch, at gun point if necessary, snacks are a must

Ava: Why? How? Why didn't anyone ever tell her this exists? Singing? Dancing? Fireworks? Pianos on fire? People from all over the world get together to party once a year? Sign her the fuck up, she's putting together a Spotify playlist with all the bangers. WHAT DO YOU MEAN PORTUGAL WON ONCE?!!

Lilith: before being crushed by the expectations of her mother, she was a carefree kid who dreamt of representing the UK one day. She will never admit it but she waits for it every year, will actually hold and squeeze Camila's hand whenever the voting gets too dramatic, which is every year

Mary: still doesn't understand why this is such a big deal, is confused as fuck about the voting, this is WAY to European for her. But a couple of songs have her tapping her foot

Bea: her wealthy af family has investment corporations elbow deep in the BBC and EBU. She's actually praying that Ava will never find out about it. Lilith fully intends to disclose it to Ava. She has zero attachment to the royal family, nor any sense of national pride, however she does root for the UK and every year she's bitterly disappointed. Will never even discuss the contest but does enjoy watching it

Ava 2nd part: she blasts her bangers playlist at full volume, is absolutely convinced she can sing every part of every song, high pitched vocals, dramatic key changes, even the string and drums. What's a vibrato, a falsetto? No idea she's just vibing and putting on whole high production value performances in the shower, while cleaning, doing laundry. Camila joins in, Lilith wants to murder her. Bea, god help her, is getting tickets for them all for next year, she's low key excited about it

Eurovision Song Contest 2002

25 May 2002 | Tallinn, Estonia

Immediately after Estonia won the 2001 Eurovision Song Contest the media began to speculate whether the country would be able to host the competition in 2002, citing a lack of a suitable venue and budgetary concerns. Estonian Television defied the critics though and produced a professional show in Tallinn. 

23 countries participated in 2002. Latvia entered the contest after Portugal declined the opportunity to participate. This was a rather peculiar situation, since Latvia ended up winning the whole contest in the end! There was no clear favorite among the 24 countries competing. Sweden, Germany and the host country Estonia were tipped as winners, but it was Marie N (Marija Naumova) who lifted the trophy. [eurovision.tv]

canon things we know about the umbrella academy

luther used to marry viktor’s action figures at the age of eight
