So, out of curiosity, I went through all my fics and picked out the ones that were inspired by specific comic series, arcs, or issues. I then took a tally to see who inspired my fics the most, either out of spite for what they wrote, or out of love - sometimes a weird combination of the both.
Robbie Thompson tops the list with 18. This didn't surprise me - I write a ton of stuff directly inspired by Venom: Space Knight.
Dan Slott is in second place with 16 - mostly spite-writing but also this is what happens when you write on Spider-Man for 10 years. He'd also written Venom Inc. with Mike Costa so that skews things a little in his favor.
Brian Michael Bendis was surprisingly third at 8 works inspired, mostly for his work on the Planet of the Symbiotes arc during Guardians of the Galaxy and just having Flash/Venom as Guardians in general.
Mike Costa is still pretty high up here at 7, since he worked on Venom Inc. I almost feel like he should get more credit from me though since Dust to Dust is so heavily influenced by Venom vol. 3.
Cullen Bunn and Rick Remender are both at 6, but like Mike Costa, Bunn was a big influence on DTD so I feel he should actually get skewed higher LOL.
Len Kaminski and Donny Cates each have inspired 5. I was honestly expecting there to be more for Cates.
Paul Jenkins, David Michelinie, and Tom DeFalco are all tied at 4. I always assumed Michelinie would've influenced my works more, given that he created Venom, but also his stories are just so strong I guess I typically don't feel the need to build on them much? But also you can assume with me that I'm always trying to channel Michelinie when I write Eddie.,
Gerry Conway, J. Michael Straczynski, and Roy Thomas (for some of my older fics) are all at 3. Again, I'm surprised by the low number for Conway since I do like his work so much.
Christian Cooper, Marc Guggenheim, and Zeb Wells all sit at 2. I always assumed Wells would be higher since he helped create Scorn but I also haven't actually written her that much.. hmm...
And lastly, Fred van Lente, Howard Mackie, Brian Reed, Ben Acker & Ben Blacker, Christos Gage, Larry Hama, Mark Millar, and James Robinson each inspired a single fic from me. Of these I'm most stunned by Larry Hama because he actually wrote.. a lot of 90s Venom.
Looking at this list is really interesting for me though because it also kind of makes me realize where I pull so much influence for how I write characterization and dialogue and such? Obviously Robbie Thompson is a huge inspiration for how I write Flash - but I also approach his character with the writing of many many others in the back of my mind. When I write Eddie Brock, it's usually some amalgamation of how my favorite writers for him (Michelinie, Kaminski, Bunn, even Conway) have depicted him.
Notably absent from the list, at least for me I think it's notable, is J. M. DeMatteis, considering how much I've gone on about how I love his writing. But I think it's because a lot of his comics I've read touch on some pretty dark subjects that I don't always feel comfortable addressing myself.
Taking a peek at some of my current WIPs and the comics that directly inspired them, I could add the likes of Stan Lee, Kurt Busiek, Mark Waid, Ann Nocenti, and yeah, definitely JMD to the list.
I do feel it's worth mentioning that if I've ever written anything with Peter and the Venom Symbiote, though, you can bet that I've got Louise Simonson's Web of Spider-Man #1 in mind. Every single time.

Moon Knight Ladies
Moon Knight of Earth-96943, the First Moon Knight of 2099
Tumblr media
Created by Len Kaminsky and Mike McKone, the first published Moon Knight for 2099 appeared in 2099: Manifest Destiny (Vol. 1/1998), #1. Remember during the Age of Khonshu arc when Marc said that, despite being called “Moon Knight,” he doesn’t actually spend much time on the moon? Well, this Moon Knight lives there, guarding the citadel of the Watcher on the outskirts of the Inhuman city, Attilan.
Tumblr media
A scuffle with some irresponsible industrialists results in the Watcher’s citadel opening for the first time in known memory and, while this Moon Knight’s role is ultimately a cameo, she does get this moment of speaking truth to power. Her words encourage Uatu to get involved which tips the scales in favor of the story’s heroes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There’s also this moment from when the citadel first opens that I thought was an interesting character detail.

Adam Shatz: Beyond Borders Kaminsky bought chemistry books from bouquinistes along the Seine and taught himself to make explosives. But when a man known as Penguin (aka Marc Hamon) recruited him for the Resistance, he wasn’t interested in his knowledge of explosives so much as his knowledge of dyes. The Resistance needed papers for passeurs at the border, for members parachuting in from the UK and for Jews at risk of deportation. He proved remarkably resourceful and inventive. Identity cards, marriage and baptism certificates, ration permits: he learned to make them all. https://www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v45/n04/adam-shatz/beyond-borders

Quote
A lot of these genre questions for me are technical questions, having to do with poetic devices. Poets write in the language of poetic devices; they don’t write in English, or Russian, or Yiddish, or so on. The same way Marc Chagall thinks in red, green, and blue. The same way Rembrandt thinks in shadow. The challenge is to make that apparent to your reader. And it doesn’t matter how many people come to your reading; it matters what they hear, and what kind of clarity and mystery and understanding they have.

HUMAN CAPITAL (2019)
Starring Liev Schreiber, Marisa Tomei, Peter Sarsgaard, Maya Hawke, Alex Wolff, Fred Hechinger, Betty Gabriel, Paul Sparks, Aasif Mandvi, Fredric Lehne, Christiane Seidel, Julia Greer, James Waterston, Daryl Edwards, Fred Hechinger, Eva Kaminsky, Dominic Colón, Maxwell Whittington-Cooper, Amanda Barron, Lawrence Smith and Greta Quispe.
Screenplay by Oren Moverman.
Directed by Marc Meyers.
Distributed by Vertical Entertainment. 95 minutes. Not Rated.
hu·man cap·i·tal (noun) – The skills, knowledge, and experience possessed by an individual or population, viewed in terms of their value or cost to an organization or country.
In the modern world, the concept of human capital has been seriously devalued. This film, a look at the haves and have-nots in the Trump era, tells some stories of modern life, showing them from three tangential perspectives, most of which underline the cheapness of human life and experience this the current atmosphere.
Knowledge means little. Empathy means less. Everyone is out for themselves, to a point where they feel slighted when someone else tries to advance their own agenda. The characters in Human Capital, particularly the ones on the top of the heap, seem to believe people are only good for helping you, otherwise they should just go away and leave you alone.
Whether it is your wife, or your friend, or your lover, or your son’s girlfriend’s dad; they are all a means to the end. And if their end does not end up so nice… well, that’s their problem, isn’t it?
In the immortal words of Mitt Romney, “Industries are people, my friend.” And people, well they are just cogs in a wheel, a necessary appliance which can be disposed of when its usefulness is done.
It’s the way of the world these days, I suppose, but it’s kind of a drag to watch in a film. Even a film which is peppered with some fantastic performances by terrific actors.
Of course, only the first two thirds of Human Capital deal with the treachery of business. The third section goes in an entirely different direction – though many of the same characters and character traits are still involved – a walk on the wild side of crime and mental illness.
The oddball Rashomon-like timeline doesn’t help, though, as we see several occurrences from different perspectives and perceptions on the action, with the storyline bopping back and forth. The problem is this quirky structure as used doesn’t necessarily provide more clarity on the storyline, often it just adds to the confusion and sense of blind fate.
The first section revolves around Drew (Liev Schrieber), a small-time real estate broker who sees himself as swimming with the sharks. When his daughter Shannon (Maya Hawke) becomes the girlfriend of the son of a big-time hedge fund manager named Quint (Peter Sarsgaard), Drew thinks this new relationship can get him entre into Quint’s flashy world. (Actually, Shannon is just a beard for the son, who is still wrestling with coming out of the closet).
Drew unwisely enters into a business deal with Quint – although he doesn’t have the money and has to fudge the legal documents to get involved – and the deal goes south almost immediately. And you know what? Drew problems are all of his own making. He probably does deserve the possibility of bankruptcy, jail, losing his home and family. He opened himself up to ruin through a get-rich-quick greed and willingness to cut corners and skirt the law. That doesn’t make it any easier to watch him desperately begging to save himself.
The second section revolves around Quint’s trophy wife Carrie (Marisa Tomei), an aging beauty who is tired of being an accessory. She finally finds a passion project – renovating a closed local theater and arts center and bringing it back to life. Carrie begs Quint to let her buy and fix the place, but as soon as things get tight Quint snatches the dream out from under her. Also, their not-quite-out son may or may not have been involved in a mysterious hit and run car crash which left a jogger for dead.
The final part revolves around Shannon and her growing affair with a disturbed young man named Ian (Alex Wolff). Meeting him at the office of her psychiatrist stepmother, Shannon recognizes that the guy is trouble, but is intrigued by his danger, and sets about trying to save him from his demons, which is easier said than done.
All of the stories cross and double cross. All of the characters have more complicated lives and motivations than we originally expect, and almost everyone is pointed straight towards some level of tragedy.
It’s nice to find a film which has ideas and ideals, and something important to say about modern culture. This makes it all the harder to say that Human Capital is much easier to respect than to actually enjoy. Almost all the characters are selfish and wildly unlikable, all doing the exact wrong thing at the exact right time.
In the end, you must ask yourself if you expect any better behavior from any of these people, and whether any of their eventual fates are undeserved. With very few exceptions, the answer to both of those questions is no.
Just because a movie is smart and well-made, that doesn’t mean you are going to like it. This is a problem which eventually bankrupts Human Capital.

here it is folks, my new passion project and hopefully weekly newsletter
also if you guys are interested i’ll be doing a poll soon on what to call it
So, I wanted to try my hand at some good old fashioned Sports Journalism™ and also maybe help newer hockey fans by making news and information more accessible to those still learning the lingo; plus, this was fun to make.
Weekly Recap:
NHL All-Star Weekend Last Man In voting ends January 10th, so head on over to nhl.com and vote for your favorites up to 10 times a day.
On January 1, the Boston Bruins faced the Chicago Blackhawks in Notre Dame Stadium under the watchful eye of Touchdown Jesus for the 11th annual Winter Classic. The Bruins won 4-2 in regulation.
Anaheim Ducks prospect and Team Canada captain Maxime Comtois has been repeatedly harassed on social media following Team Canada’s departure from the IIHF World Junior Championship.
The Edmonton Oilers recently acquired Brandon Manning from the Chicago Blackhawks, who you may remember as That Guy Who Broke McDavid’s Collarbone and Knocked Him Out of Calder Contention; more on this next week.
Alex Ovechkin, of the Washington Capitals, was named captain of the Metropolitan Division for All-Star Weekend, but later announced he would not be attending. The NHL plans to penalize him by forcing him to sit out the first game immediately following All-Star Weekend.
The Philadelphia Flyers claimed goalie Mike McKenna off waivers from the Vancouver Canucks on Friday; McKenna is the seventh goalie the Flyers have had this season. While McKenna is expected to back Carter Hart, there is a chance he could be starting in net at some point in the near future.
Play of the Week:
During the December 31 matchup between the Dallas Stars and the visiting Montreal Canadiens, who beat the Stars 3-2 in Overtime, defenceman Jordie Benn (a former Star himself) incurred a penalty which resulted in a Power Play Goal scored by his own brother, forward Jamie Benn, captain of the Stars.
Players to Watch:
Forward Nikita Kucherov leads the Tampa Bay Lightning, and the league, with a total of 69 points; that’s 20 goals and 49 assists in 41 games, 17 of these points were notched in the last five games he’s played. Kucherov has a career total of 403 points in 406 games played.
Defenceman Tyson Barrie of the Colorado Avalanche became the all-time leader in scoring by a defenceman in franchise history on Friday. Barrie has 25 assists and 5 goals in 38 games this season. He has a career total of 278 points in 444 games played.
San Jose Sharks goalie Martin Jones has 17 wins, including 1 Shutout, and 4 Overtime Losses in 30 starts this season. Jones has faced an impressive 827 Shots Against this season, and has played a total of 1,751 minutes in 30 games played.
Prospect Watch:
Forward Filip Zadina, drafted 6th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in 2018, has 17 points in 27 games played this season. Zadina was recently loaned to Team Czech Republic for the IIHF World Junior Championship. He had a very successful career in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, where he played for the Halifax Mooseheads. He won the Mike Bossy award as the league’s Best Professional Prospect in 2017-18. Zadina currently plays for the Grand Rapid Griffins of the American Hockey League.
Defenceman Nic Hague, drafted 34th overall by the Las Vegas Golden Knights in 2017, has 17 points in 36 games played this season. Hague played for the Mississauga Steelheads of the Ontario Hockey League. He led the Steelheads  in scoring with 35 goals and 78 points in the 17-18 season; he was awarded the Max Kaminsky trophy as Defenceman of the Year. Hague currently plays for the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League.
Forward Jordan Kyrou, drafted 35th overall by the St. Louis Blues in 2016, has 10 goals and 23 points in 23 games (in the AHL). Kyrou had a very successful career with the Sarnia Sting of the Ontario Hockey League, tallying 109 points in 56 games during the 2017-18 season. He was awarded both the Red Tilson (Most Outstanding Player) and the Jim Mahon (Top Scoring Right Wing) trophies in 2017-18. Kyrou currently plays for the San Antonio Rampage of the American Hockey League.
Team of the Week:
The New York Rangers, an Original Six team who are currently 5th in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference, were founded in 1926 and play out of Madison Square Garden. They have won 4 Stanley Cups, most recently in 1993-94. Notable alumni include Mark Messier, Wayne Gretzky, Jaromir Jagr, Tim Horton, Guy Lafleur, Pat LaFontaine, and Marc Savard.
Outside the NHL:
The Calgary Inferno lead the Canadian Women’s Hockey League with 27 points in 16 games played. Rebecca Johnston leads the team with 10 goals and 25 points in 16 games.
The CWHL All-Star Game will take place at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto on January 20.
The Boston Pride lead the National Women’s Hockey League with 14 points in 9 games played. Haley Skarupa leads the team with 4 goals and 11 points in 8 games.
The NWHL All-Star Weekend will take place at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville February 9-10.
Weekly Thoughts:
The Carolina Hurricanes made some interesting moves this summer, though it doesn’t really seem to have worked out so well for them. The Hurricanes had dealings with both the Buffalo Sabres and the Calgary Flames, who appear to have gotten the better end of these deals.
The Buffalo Sabres have been continuously improving their game this season, and currently hold the number one Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.
Sabres forward Jeff Skinner, acquired from the Carolina Hurricanes this summer, has 28 goals and 41 points in 41 games this season. Last season, Skinner finished with only 49 total points in 82 games.
The Calgary Flames are number one in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference and are, at this point, guaranteed to advance to Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Forward Elias Lindholm, acquired from the Hurricanes this summer in a package deal along with Noah Hanifin, currently has 20 goals and 48 points in 42 games this season with the Flames. Lindholm finished last season with 44 points in 81 games.
Defenceman Noah Hanifin, who was drafted 5th overall by the Hurricanes in 2015, currently has 21 points in 42 games. He tallied 32 points in 79 games last season.
The Carolina Hurricanes are 6th in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference, and are currently out of playoff contention.
Forward Michael Ferlund, acquired in a package deal from the Calgary Flames, has 12 goals and 19 points in 33 games. He tallied 41 points in 77 games last season.
Acquired in that same deal was defencemen Dougie Hamilton, who has tallied only 5 goals and 13 points in 40 games. Last season, Hamilton had 44 points in 82 games.
In exchange for Skinner, the Hurricanes acquired several future draft picks and prospect Cliff Pu, a forward, from the Sabres. Pu currently plays for the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League. He has a total of 3 points in 30 games this season.
In contrast to the Hurricanes, their AHL affiliate the Charlotte Checkers are having a fantastic season. The Checkers currently lead the Atlantic Division and the entire Eastern Conference with 53 points; that’s 25 wins at two points apiece, and 3 overtime, or OT, losses, which are worth one point each. That’s 5 more points than the second overall team in the conference, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (48 points), and 6 points more than the number one team in the Western Conference, the Iowa Wild (47 points.)
In addition to being the top team in the league, two Checkers forwards, Nicolas Roy and Martin Necas, have been named CCM/AHL Player of the Week. Forward Janne Kuokkanen and defenceman Trevor Carrick have also been named to the AHL All-Star Classic; Mike Vellucci (Checkers) will coach the Atlantic Division.
