Qipao/Cheongsam Taobao Shop Recs
Tumblr media
A while ago I received a direct message asking for recs on where to buy qipao/cheongsam, and I figured I’d make a post for others who’d also be interested.
First of all - I think qipao should be tried on and bought in-person if at all possible, since having the right fit is important - especially if it’s for a formal occasion like a wedding. However, since that’s often not possible, I’ve compiled a list of online shop recs, mainly for more casual occasions.
Since English-language online qipao shops are plentiful and easy to find, I’ll be focusing this list on Taobao shops only. Please note that these are my personal recs, based on my own aesthetic preferences. Thus most of the recs are for shops focused on retro-inspired, minguo-style qipao made using the traditional 平裁/pingcai (flat tailoring) method. Also, I have not actually purchased qipao from any of these shops (all my qipao were bought in person) - this is based mainly on how appealing I find the designs.
1. 嬉姷/Xi You - Elegant qipao modelled closely on historical designs, mainly from the Republican era/minguo. Careful attention paid to historical details. My favorite qipao shop to browse for fun:
Tumblr media
2. 海上芳时/Shanghai Fancy - Specializes in chic minguo-style designs of the 1920s-1940s. Recently came out with a neat art deco-inspired collection:
Tumblr media
3. 唐之语/Tang Zhi Yu - Retro-style qipao in a variety of bold prints, with a focus on the form-fitting designs of the 1950s-1960s, including those from the film “In the Mood for Love”:
Tumblr media
4. 繁莳/Fancy Dream - Dreamy, delicate retro-inspired qipao and modified qipao. Also has a nice selection of winter majia (vests):
Tumblr media
5. Top Ulara - A large selection of classic, retro-style qipao with a hint of glamour. Offers lots of long/thick/layered qipao suitable for colder weather:
Tumblr media
6. 梦回故里/Menghui Guli - Nostalgic, conservative retro-style qipao for all seasons. Old-fashioned in a good way:
Tumblr media
7. 柳园旗袍/Liuyuan Qipao - Retro-style qipao with bold and interesting prints, in styles from the 1910s to the 1960s. The shop currently doesn’t show any products, but hopefully it’ll restock soon:
Tumblr media
8. 限时赏味/Xianshi Shangwei - Streamlined, retro-style qipao in subtle colors and prints that exemplify understated elegance:
Tumblr media
9. 茉茉/Momo - Tons of options for simple, cute, and casual retro-style qipao suitable for daily wear. Designs tend towards monochromes and all-over prints. Another review/rec here:
Tumblr media
10. 珞珞如石/RoseEra - Simple yet elegant retro-style and contemporary qipao. I love the shop’s use of sheer fabrics & layering in its designs:
Tumblr media
11. 向南飞FLY - Offers a selection of casually stylish retro-style qipao and modified qipao for daily chic:
Tumblr media
12. 川黛/Chuan Dai - Soft, feminine, pastel-infused qipao & modified qipao in retro-inspired and contemporary styles:
Tumblr media
13. 四斤自制/Sijin Studio - Creative, avant-garde takes on (modified) qipao & qipao-inspired outfits:
Tumblr media
14. 密扇/Mukzin - Colorful, playful, and irreverent modified qipao and qipao-inspired outfits. There’s also an English website here:
Tumblr media
If you like the above qipao but still want an English website, there are several Taobao resellers that carry similar designs - for example, Beth and Brian Qipao.
Finally, when it comes to in-person shops, I want to highlight Xiangjiang Silk Co., a relatively new boutique in New York City specializing in actual vintage 1950s-1960s qipao. There’s an article here on the boutique and its founder Heather Guo (who was featured in Vogue). Store visits are appointment-only, so you’ll have to reach out to Heather via her social media if you want to drop by.
If anyone has reviews of the above shops and/or more qipao shop recs, please share! ^^
Bonus: I also have online shop recs for hanfu (1, 2), modified hanfu/hanyuansu (1, 2), hanfu accessories, weimao, and hair accessories.

Chinese Ethnic Minority Literature
I just finished taking an incredibly eye-opening class about Chinese ethnic minority literature. China has a thriving minority literature scene, and it's absolutely fascinating and full of interesting works, so I wanted to share some of the authors that I learned about this semester! This is, obviously, an incomplete list-- it's pretty heavily biased towards what we read about in class, and there's probably a lot I've missed!
For any authors with full works that have been translated into English, I've listed it under their names. Some other authors may also have poems or short stories published in translation online or in anthologies.

More Resources on Ethnic Minority Literature:
Altaic Storytelling: The blog of translator Bruce Humes (translator of Confessions of a Jade Lord, among other works). Has a fairly broad focus, but he's written a lot about ethnic minorities.
Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Institute of Ethnic Literature: China has a thriving infrastructure to support the writing of and research into ethnic minority literature, and this is one of the larger institutions. I believe their research focuses more on oral traditions, but they have some information about contemporary writers as well.
Chinese Women Writers on the Environment: An anthology of eco-fiction by female ethnic minority writers.
Golden Horse Award 駿馬獎: This is an annual award for ethnic minority literature. The wikipedia link lists all the previous winners.
The Leeds Center for New Chinese Writing: Again not specific to ethnic minorities, but features several ethnic minority authors.
Paper Republic: This organization is devoted to translated Chinese writing and isn't specific to ethnic minority literature but has information about and translations of some of the writers on this list.
Poetry International: This website isn't specific to ethnic minorities or even to China, but many of the poets on this list have pages there with a few poems translated into English.

For centuries, colorism, or the discrimination against those with darker skin tones within the same group, has haunted Latino communities across the Americas. The echoes of the Spanish caste system still impact everything from health outcomes to job opportunities. That violent history is something that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever tries to address; the characters portrayed by Latinos are intended to be Mesoamerican, and that’s key to the story, which grapples with the horrors of colonialism.
Izzie Ramirez on how Latinos grapple with colorism with the rise of Tenoch Huerta Majia's Namor.

Have a Palia Ot4 thingy
Hassian
The hunter's love was shown in actions. Small things that felt so much larger.
If Tish mention offhandly that antlers were just the thing to bring a piece together the next day a Proudhon antler would be in her workshop. She always had enough hide and fur to work with. Najima would find a chappa plushie on her bed after the Majia market without even a lecture on how they were invasive.
Hodari would find herbal remedies on his workbench, ones for the back pain he complained about, for the nightmares he still woke up from tangled between three other bodies.  Adriana found she rarely had to hunt anymore, and would find the spice she just finished using replenished by nightfall.
He listened and worked to make sure they had everything they needed. He still had issues opening up to them, but the three understood. More than understood if Tish’s rather terrifying confrontation with Tamala was anything to go from.
Hodari
He was a father, and it showed in everything he did. Hodari wanted to take care of the people he loved, to keep them well and safe. He never wanted to lose someone else again.
He made sure Hassian knew the younger man to have a shoulder to lean on  if he needed it, that he knew being open about grief was difficult but needed. He was no Sifu but he took care in crafting arrows for the hunter, maintaining the paladin on his shoulder.
Hodari helps Tish with her work, retrieving ore and smelting it. Crafting ornate filigree for her designs ; inspired by her visions and high-spirited creativity. He visits her shop at lunch, food in hand to make sure she takes a break.
Adriana rarely slept, up exploring the world new to her, helping literally everyone in town or trying to piece together exactly what happened to her people and why she was here.  So when night fell and his lovers start tucking into bed he makes sure to go out to find her. Reminds her that sleep is something even humans need and that the favor, the crops, and the questions can wait until tomorrow.
Tish
Tish spent half her life being taken care of. It came easy to her: maybe too easy to hear Hassian complain when he finds her doing Reths sidework for the hundredth time.
She cared with the soft rope tied around Hassian’s wrists when the hunter couldn’t turn off his mind, in the room she made for him bringing the wild into their home; a sanctuary that only they knew about. In the way she threw Tamala out of her shop when the woman made snide remarks on they relationship.
She cared with the way Hodari rested against her chest, curled together as he hid muffled tears. In the workshop that was big enough for them both to create and work, furniture made with ideas from Nijuma. Stations solid enough to take rough work and experiments of metal and fire.
Cared for her sweet Ria, helping her garden; patching up injuries from falls, from old temple ruins sharp and dangerous. Listening to wild theories that end with quiet panic of why now, of what did we do. What if it happens again?
Adriana
She was so very human about her care.
It was cooking their favorite meals for birthdays, old but new holidays that she remembered and showed them.
It was learning of Tish and Hassian’s almost romance, seeing the feelings still there and pulling them back together.  Seeing the lonely set of Hodari’s shoulders and offering friendship than more between the four.
She showed love by helping Najuma test projects carving out part of her plot for the young inventor. Making sure she remained safe to ease Hodari's worry.
Showed care in the way she created spaces for them in her home, to get away from the world. The way she held each through grief and pain, and allowed herself to be held. She loved fiercely, touches given freely and softly.

Over half a century ago, deep in the jungles of Guatemala, a gigantic stone head was uncovered. The face had fine features, thin lips, and a large nose, and its face was directed up at the sky.
Unusually, the face demonstrated Caucasian features which were not consistent with any of the pre-Hispanic races of America.
The discovery first emerged when Dr. Oscar Rafael Padilla Lara, a doctor of philosophy, lawyer, and notary, received a photograph of the head in 1987. The photograph was taken in the 1950s by the owner of the land where the head was found.
It was found to be almost completely destroyed, used as target practice by anti-government rebels.
Some researchers believe that the facial features of the statue depicted a representative of an ancient alien civilization, which was much more developed than the locals before the arrival of the Spaniards. Some have also suggested that the head of the statue also had a torso, although this has not been confirmed.
Guatemalan archaeologist Hector E Majia wrote: "I certify that this monument presents no characteristics of Maya, Nahuatl, Olmec or any other pre-Hispanic civilization. It was created by an extraordinary and superior civilization with awesome knowledge of which there is no record of existence on this planet."

Democratizing Energy explores how our dominant carbon and nuclear energy assemblages shape conceptions of participation, risk, and in/securities, and how they might be reengineered to deliver justice and democratic participation in transitioning energy systems. Chapters assess the economies, geographies and politics of current and future energy landscapes, exposing how dominant assemblages (composed of technologies, strategies, knowledge and authorities) change our understanding of security and risk, and how they these shared understandings are often enacted uncritically in policy. Contributors address integral relationships across the production and government of material and human energies and the opportunities for sustainable and democratic governance. In addition, the book explores how interest groups advance idealized energy futures and energy imaginaries. The work delves into the role that states, market organizations and civil society play in envisioned energy change. It
