Types of Wizards! ✨
❥ This was just a fun idea since I’ve been reading lots of fantasy headcanons, I wanted to try! Plus I don’t see too many for magic-y stuff out there so this gave me a good idea!
❥ Also! Most of these are female centered but some of this can be for boys too! I just prefer the term wizard because it sounds cooler lol. But thank you! Enjoy!
Storybook Wizards 🤎
Usually has an owl or sparrows as a companion.
Quills are made from barn owl feathers.
Wands are made from cinnamomum trees, elm trees, or hazel trees.
Likes to feed the crickets that sing on the bookshelves. Some think it’s gross but they’re very nice!
Uses golden wax seals for nearly everything.
Collects old trinkets they find or receive from friends. They don’t work anymore or are just old, but has tried fixing them up.
Loves both books & scrolls, but thinks books are easier to hold onto. That one friend who decides to read one more chapter, but ends up reading all night.
Loves to wish on stars or dandelions but is too embarrassed to tell anyone.
Seems like a bit of a hermit, but is actually really friendly! Loves to interact with people & exchange different interests, quite talkative at times.
Either works at an archive or some kind of library, has a special little key that works only for them.
Weather Wizards 🌩️
Usually has a bird of prey as a companion, but don’t worry they’re friendly 😅🙏
Quills are made from crow feathers.
Wands are made from maple trees, pine trees, or baobab trees.
The ultimate bird parent!! Birds love them & they’re always putting out bird seed feeders or scraps of veggies.
Lives alone in a tall tower in the middle of the woods. Only goes to town when necessary & will turn into a grumpy pants if you knock on their door.
Sometimes storm clouds or rain will swirl around their house, usually due to spell testing or potions.
The weather is actually pretty nice when they’re around! Cool breezes, clear skies, warm sunny days; tries to deny it’s their work until the sunshine gets brighter.
Collects clean water in mason jars or glass bottles when it rains.
Likes to climb rooftops & chart the stars.
Can always sense when a storm is approaching, doesn’t matter what kind they’re spot on. Likely their job is to keep them at bay as a guardian or lookout.
Love Wizards 💝
Usually has a dove or a type of songbird as a companion.
Quills are made from white swan feathers.
Wands are made from cherry trees, camellia trees, or jasmine shrubs.
Has an easier time communicating with fauna.
Ladybugs are automatically attracted to them & will usually bring good luck to them throughout the day.
Stores their potions in old perfume bottles but will make perfume as a small side job. Has to label everything though.
Has a small rose bush growing outside of their window; likes to talk to it & believes plants have feelings.
Super affectionate! Either the mom friend or the cutsey clingy child friend.
Never forgets Valentine’s Day!! (I’m sorry I know it was last week!) Goes over the top every year & everyone either gets a bouquet or a little goodie bag. The size of the gift depends on who you are sometimes.
Business is a postal service for relationship problems but gets a lot of love letters to proofread. A bit embarrassed receiving one addressed to them.
Swamp Wizards 🐸
Usually has a crane or even a heron as a companion. But sometimes that makes it hard to get in them the house...
Quills are made from duck feathers.
Wands are made of mangrove trees, dogwood trees, or lilypad stems.
Defined as the oddballs of wizardry. They are known to travel a lot but usually live alone.
Uses an old timey ferry boat to get around, but has to use magic to get the paddle wheel moving. It’ll creak & stop like an old engine.
Probably the most experienced in floral/nature magic & their house is like an absolute jungle. Will even let moss grow out because “it wants to be there.”
Has tried more than once to kiss a frog & see if it’ll turn into their true love, but carries medicine around just in case.
Really loves milkweed flowers & will set up cute bundles in their home to make it smell good.
The best cook in the world but mostly uses magic to help.
Probably the friendliest person you’ll meet! Will tell all sorts of stories about their travels, the different kinds of people they’ve met, where to find the best berry bushes, how to care for tadpoles— It might be awhile before you can introduce yourself…

Wizarding World Jobs -> Arts, Entertainment & Craft
What's the Wizarding World without fun and games? If your dearest wizard/witch is artistically-inclined, interested in performance, or wishing to hone their skills in a specific craft, then you've come to the right place! Below you'll find a list of jobs, businesses, and sub-jobs that may be a good fit for the creative wixen. Additional jobs will be added to a separate list that encompases jobs more liken to older times in the Wizarding World, such as HL era and earlier.
Career Guide Masterlist | Next
Fine/Literary Arts
Graphic Designer
Magic Subtext: The world needs designers! Shops in Diagon Alley need signage and posters, products needs labels, the Ministry of Magic needs propaganda posters, etc. Although this is mostly muggle-artsy, it's important to know what charms to use to further enhance your designs. Even further, perhaps design something with mobility, or with transfiguration involved (think chocolate frog cards' famous wizard summaries, or a Lick "O" Rish Spider packaging where the spider graphics are enchanted to dance around the packaging near your fingers).
Painter or Restorer (Portraits or otherwise)
Magic Subtext: The magicked portraits that line the halls of Hogwarts and decorate the corridors of many wizards' homes had to have been painted by someone! If you feel like you want to take up a paintbrush, perhaps consider creating magical portraits of your subjects, experiment with abstraction that transfigures, or perhaps examine painting scenes from pensieves. No matter the media—chalk, lead, acrylic, oil, etc.— the presence of art is crucial.
Tattoo Artist
Magic Subtext: Just as symbols and spell motions have power, so do tattoos. It's not all doom and gloom with the Dark Mark, of course! Depending on the symbol and associated charms, tattoos can transcend beyond the realm of just aesthetic and account for magic wards, communication, or even just plain old allyship to one's kin.
Sculptor
Magic Subtext: If sculpture is more your thing, you may be interested in finding a position in city planning, or even work to get commissioned by a dragon sanctuary! And while public art is very valuable, private statues and botanical garden sculptures can be just as important. Some may even conceal hidden passages, or perhaps the statue transfigures into something else at a certain time of day!
Author/Poet
Magic Subtext: Wizards and witches alike love to dive into fictional novels like The Flap of the Cape, so why not write a novel of your own? And if not fiction, there is always room for textbook writing, biographies, how-to guides, or plays and poems!
Publisher
Magic Subtext: Perhaps you're not so much interested in writing the books and plays and poems yourself, but would like to find ways to share them with the wizarding world. Becoming a publisher is a great opportunity to help aspiring wizard authors get their work out there.
Editor
Magic Subtext: While there may be magic quills that can help with the grammar, nothing beats a good human set of eyes to read through people's writing and make revisions. Magicals assistance may be beneficial but you'll know where to make it pop!
Photographer
Magic Subtext: From journalism photography, portrait photography, art photography, textbook photography, and more, the creative uses for a camera know no bounds both in the wizarding world and out! And there is, of course, a certain beauty to the way that the photos move.
Museum Curator
Magic Subtext: There are many great portraits, art and historical pieces, and artifacts in the Wizarding World, and someone needs to curate them! Whether for educational or art purposes, having the background knowledge and understanding to develop an amazing collection is very much needed, so why not have it be you!
Art Appraiser and/or Authenticator
Magic Subtext: Do you love art history? Are you interested in examining precious works in the Wizarding World? Take some time to learn your artists, as well as some charms to authenticate pieces of work, and some spells for quick index research and you're off to the races!
Performing Arts
Actor/Actress
Magic Subtext: While wizards may not have movies, theatre still remains a sublime medium with wizards attending the Wizarding Academy of Dramatic Arts in order to seek further education after school in performance.
Singer/Musician
Magic Subtext: The Frog Choir is always around at Hogwarts but if you're looking to branch out and become the next Celestina Warbeck or thrash like the Weird Sisters, this may be right for you!
Circus and/or Street Performer
Magic Subtext: Careers in the Circus or with performance troupes can get a little bit dicey— not just because the leaders have a history of mistreatment but because even without the internal risks, there's a chance of getting in trouble with the Ministry of Magic if performing for muggles. Thus, performers must walk the line of providing a magic performance without giving away their secrets.
Model
Magic Subtext: How are any wixen going to know about the next top fashion or coolest broom ambassadors if there aren't any models? Who are the kiddos going to idolize when they crack open the next issue of Witch Weekly? Find a niche in clothing, Quidditch, dueling, high pureblood society, and more, or perhaps simply become a photographer's muse!
Dancer
Magic Subtext: Waltzing, ballet, break-dancing, and more all exist in the Wizarding World. Beauxbatons even has an extensive dance program, and the Wizarding Academy of Dramatic Arts is always looking for more dancers. Put on your slippers and perhaps become the next Gabrielle Delacour!
DJ
Magic Subtext: Casting some amplification charms and putting on a badass mix of The Bent-Winged Snitches and Lorcan d'Eath? Yes please! The Wizarding World clubs and events (like Quidditch tournaments) need some DJ's, after all.
Sports & Entertainment
Radio Broadcaster
Magic Subtext: The Wizarding Wireless Network isn't the only station for mages to listen to, but where there's a station there must be people to broadcast. Newspapers aren't the only place to get news, after all, but you can also dabble in music or comedy.
Venue Operator/Owner
Magic Subtext: Interested in hosting artists, Quidditch or duelling matches, and performances? Being the owner/operator of a venue can be a lot of work but bring a great deal of joy to people. If you want to take such a career even further, perhaps try dabbling in some light show magic!
Event Planner
Magic Subtext: Sometimes, mages either can't be trusted or can't be bothered to plan an event. This is where your services will come in handy as you make sure every bit of entertainment from the food to the decor is all set in place for a grand day or week!
Professional Dueler
Magic Subtext: Did you love Defense Against the Dark Arts in school? Perhaps you want to take your excitement with the Dueling Club to a pro level and fight some folks for entertainment and sport.
Pro Dueling Coach/Trainer
Magic Subtext: Interested in training duelers at the pro level? Perhaps you'll want to start a school or dueling gym to get your people in shape, or maybe lend your coaching abilities to private sectors or Ministries for auror training.
Hippogriff Racer
Magic Subtext: Do you love the thrill of competition? Are you good with beasts and creature care? Looking for something a little less aggressive than Quidditch but just as thrilling with being in the open air? Try becoming a pro hippogriff racer!
Quidditch
Magic Subtext:
- Player (Chaser, Beater, Seeker, Keeper)
- Coach
- Referee
- Announcer
- Manager
- Agent
Journalist
Magic Subtext: From magazines to newspapers and other publications, what better way to get your voice heard than becoming a writer?
- Gossip Column
- News (Politics, War Correspondent, etc. etc.)
- Education Editorials
- Travel Writing
- Quidditch Reporter
- Subject Critic (food, music, potions, performances, etc.)
Crafts
Architect
Magic Subtext: Do wixen live in homes? Do magical communities need structural warding and protection? You can be they do! After all, constructing gorgeous buildings like Hogwarts, Malfoy Manor, Beauxbatons, Gringotts, etc. was no easy feat, and as the Wizarding World grows, so does the need for housing and communal spaces.
Broommaker
Magic Subtext: There are several broom-making companies such as Comet Trading, Ellerby and Spudmore, Nimbus, and more, but don't think that that those are your only options! Sometimes, people want a very specific niche kind of broom — couples brooms, luxury brooms, sustainable brooms, brooms that can withstand very harsh climates, etc.
Wandmaker
Magic Subtext: Just like with broom making, you can apprentice with the masters or manufacture your own in a specific niche. Some wandmakers are known for having an affinity for a certain wood, others may want wands created with environmentally sound materials.
Potter (as in pottery, not the Boy Who Lived)
Magic Subtext: Whether you choose to make it more artistic or practical is up to you, but the fact of the matter is that everyone need pots and dishes! If you like pottery or working with clay, this may be just the thing for you—even better if you can figure out a way to charm them into never cracking.
Florist
Magic Subtext: While not exactly a herbologist, a florist does need some of the same skills — and perhaps a little knowledge in divination if you want to be especially high value. Knowledge of the symbolism of flowers, plant care, and artistic arrangement are all valued skills for this occupation.
Clothing
Magic Subtext: Consider niches within even the list below — wedding, luxury, sustainable, cultural, vintage, etc.
- Tailor
- Dressmaker
- Cobbler
- Jeweler
- General Fashion Designer
Food
Magic Subtext: Whether bringing muggle delicacies to the Wizarding World or sticking purely with wixen cuisine, you can't go wrong with different kinds of food.
- Caterer
- Sous Chef
- Winemaker
- Alcohol Distiller (like buddy there are SO many magical drinks)
- Pastry Chef/Baker
- Chocolatier
- Candy Maker
Various & More Businesses
Philosopher
Magic Subtext: Do you have some great ideas about life? Do you perhaps have some philosophies on the best way for wixen to live long and happy lives? Maybe you'd like to work on wizarding ethics and advocate for a nonprofit, or write a book like Learned Comments of Wisdom, or The Philosophy of the Mundane: Why the Muggles Prefer Not to Know.
Interior Decorator
Magic Subtext: Whether personal home developments or public spaces, everyone needs decor! Depending on whether your client may want a certain aesthetic, look for enchanted objects, or simply wants a spatial design that reflects the properties to get the magic energy flowing, this job combines work with charms, history, creativity, and an understanding of aurology is always a plus!
Magic Landscaper
Magic Subtext: Interested in herbology? Like getting creative with plants and want to apply some aesthetics to a person's home garden? Perhaps the man-eating hedges in front of a pureblood residence need some trimming. Take this in a beautification direction, or perhaps make it more practical with providing services for de-gnoming!
Beauty
Magic Subtext: Beautification and skincare is still super important in the Wizarding World! Those enchanted perfumes and mood-shifting nail polishes won't sell themselves, after all! Cosmetology can be quite a lucrative business.
- Makeup Artist
- Perfume Maker
- Nail Technician
- Hair Stylist
