The special counsel’s investigation into Donald Trump and the aftermath of the 2020 election sought the former president’s Twitter direct messages, of which there were many, federal prosecutors and lawyers for Twitter revealed in newly unsealed transcripts from February court hearings about the search warrant. [...]
A lawyer representing Twitter, now called “X,” similarly confirmed in court that Trump’s account had several private messages between users on the platform. “X” was able to find both the sent direct messages and deleted messages for prosecutors, according to the transcripts.
“We were able to determine that there was some volume in that for this account. There are confidential communications,” a lawyer for Twitter said about @realDonaldTrump’s direct messages.

While it remained unclear what sorts of information the messages contained and who exactly may have written them, it was a revelation that there were private messages associated with the Twitter account of Mr. Trump, who has famously been cautious about using written forms of communications in his dealings with aides and allies.
The papers included transcripts of hearings in Federal District Court in Washington in February during which Judge Beryl A. Howell asserted that Mr. Smith’s office had sought Mr. Trump’s direct messages — or DMs — from Twitter as part of a search warrant it executed on the account in January.
In one of the transcripts, a lawyer for Twitter, answering questions from Judge Howell, confirmed that the company had turned over to the special counsel’s office “all direct messages, the DMs” from Mr. Trump’s Twitter account, including those sent, received and “stored in draft form.”
The lawyer for Twitter told Judge Howell that the company had found both “deleted” and “nondeleted” direct messages associated with Mr. Trump’s account.
I am not at all surprised that “deleted” DMs are not in fact deleted, but rather hidden. I am slightly surprised that Trump — famously averse not just to using email and text messages, but even to his own lawyers taking written notes in meetings, so as not to leave a chain of evidence for his lifelong criminal activity — would use, of all things, the infamously unencrypted direct messaging feature on Twitter. To be clear, this is a pleasant surprise.

As I speculated last week, nothing you do on Twitter is private. Not your DMs, not your “deleted” DMs, not your searches, not your location (if you’re foolish enough to grant Twitter/X access to it), not your draft posts.
Elon Musk comes out of this looking like he’d happily fellate Trump:
Ultimately, U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell held Twitter in contempt of court in February, fining the company $350,000 for missing a court-ordered deadline to comply with Smith’s search warrant. But the newly unsealed transcripts of the proceedings in her courtroom show that the fine was the least of the punishment. Howell lit into Twitter for taking “extraordinary” and apparently unprecedented steps to give Trump advance notice about the search warrant — despite prosecutors’ warnings, backed by unspecified evidence, that notifying Trump could cause grave damage to their investigation.
“Is this to make Donald Trump feel like he is a particularly welcomed new renewed user of Twitter?” Howell asked.
“Twitter has no interest other than litigation its constitutional rights,” replied attorney George Varghese of WilmerHale, the firm Twitter deploys for much of its litigation.
But Howell returned to the theme repeatedly during the proceedings, wondering why the company was taking “momentous” steps to protect Trump that it had never taken for other uses. In the hearing on Feb. 7, 2023, Howell referenced Musk, asking: “Is it because the new CEO wants to cozy up with the former president?”

“This is a sad day for Mexican wolves and a devastating loss for the Mangas pack, which could be welcoming pups at any moment,” said Maggie Howell, Wolf Conservation Center executive director. “Apart from endangering the Mangas pack’s survival, science has shown that removing a wolf parent from the family can destabilize the pack and increase the likelihood of further conflicts.”
The Fish and Wildlife Service issued the order to kill Rusty because of his alleged involvement in multiple killings of cattle, most on public lands, and after an unspecified number of cattle carcasses from animals that had not been killed by wolves were found in the Mangas Pack’s territory. The Service has refused to follow the recommendations of scientists that livestock owners be required to remove the carrion from non-wolf-killed stock before wolves scavenge. In this instance it is not known whether the wolves fed on the carrion.
Conservationists warn that the removal of a breeding male could have severe consequences for the pack’s survival. It also might not reduce predations on domestic animals at all. Scientific studies show that wolf removal can exacerbate the potential for conflict, especially when breeding adults are killed. The remaining pack members, many of whom are learning to hunt, are more desperate to find food without the help of an experienced adult and thus are more likely to turn to unprotected livestock.

My problem with the title character of the film version of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is that she seems to have sprung full-blown -- mannerisms, catchphrases ("I am in my prime"), ideology and all -- from the imaginations of the people who created her, screenwriter Jay Presson Allen and actress Maggie Smith. I'm no more able to envision a backstory, a childhood, or an inner life for her than I am for a Dickens character like Mr. Micawber. At least in Muriel Spark's novel there are hints of something more, but they haven't translated well to the screen. Which is not to say that Smith didn't deserve her Oscar for playing the role; it's a fascinating, nuanced performance, from Jean Brodie's initial dominance to her comeuppance to her final defiance. If we don't know how Jean came to imagine herself an Übermensch, that's our problem, the film eventually suggests. Better to sit back and watch some fine performances: Robert Stephens as the randy art teacher, the always wonderful and welcome Celia Johnson as the headmistress, and 19-year-old Pamela Franklin convincingly transforming the 12-year-old into the post-pubescent student whom Jean underestimates. But anathema upon the producer or whoever decided to commission Rod McKuen to write a goopy song that unaccountably was nominated for an Oscar. At least it plays only over the end credits when you can easily escape it.

IDW Debuts the Haunting Cover Artwork to May’s Dark Spaces: Good Deeds #1

About the Creators
Che Grayson is a Brooklyn-based filmmaker, writer, and TED speaker whose work is heavily inspired by their love of folklore and horror. Che has written comics for Image, IDW, and DC. A graduate of New York University’s MFA film program, they wrote and directed the award-winning film Magic Hour, which premiered at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival. Che has worked as a writer for Netflix, Nickelodeon, and Skydance Animation and is currently in development for a new animated TV series.

Your Idea of the Character:
I’m super open to this character and their backstory. This person is probably pretty high up in the Vanguard hierarchy (up to you on the specific position). They’ve probably been involved with the company for a long time.
They found David when he was trying to find a way to get treatment for his younger sister who was sick. With David being young and desperate, they took advantage of the situation. They offered an experimental treatment to David for his sister. When David said he couldn’t pay, they suggested he work off his debt by joining the company as a security specialist. They’re kind of a mentor to David and while they are strict, they may actually care for David in a weird way (or not, up to you!). They are concerned about David’s loyalty and try to make sure to keep him on a short leash. They give David all his assignments, which included messing with the brakes on Nancy’s car, which caused her death.
Potential Plans & Headcanons:
They will probably drive a wedge between David and his girlfriend, Cordelia, who is the sister of one of his targets. They’re probably going to be the devil on his shoulder and keep bringing up the fact that they (Vanguard) saved his sister to keep him under the company’s control. On top of that, David basically committed a murder for them and they can hold that over him as well.
It could be interesting if they would or would never defect from Vanguard. Could they know something more about what Vanguard is planning? How do they feel about the Reborn? Could their loyalty to the company be wavering as well? How far will they go for the company? What happens if David doesn’t follow their rules and goes against the company? What will they do to him or Cordelia?
It could be interesting if they ended up joining Vanguard because of the same reasons David did, such as joining to save a friend, significant other, or family member’s life with Vanguard’s drugs.
