Magda went to college for and graduated with a degree in business management before her apprenticeship with her father per her mother’s wishes for her to get her education

Magda made the move to New York for college but would return home on breaks to help out at her dad’s shop with the promise he would aid in the funding and opening of her own shop once she graduated

Though he was no criminal, her father was still connected to his old friends who had been and therefore the family had connections to those in the criminal underworld without actually being criminals themselves

Beben mate y entretienen sus conversaciones con magdalenas y croissants. Conocen mi futuro mas no mi pasado. Conozco su presente mas no su futuro. Nos acompañamos durante el cáncer de una de ellas. Nos leemos para olvidar las voces de nuestras cabezas. Me cubren con turbantes blancos en forma de amor y compañía. Ahora puedo ver mi futuro, pero no mi presente ni pasado.

Gustavo y su grupo de actores caminan en círculo. Me miran con desconfianza. La obra se presenta en quince días. La protagonista se fue a vivir a Noruega. Dos jóvenes comienzan a enamorarse entre sus parlamentos. Dos gritos al cielo terminan con la obra. Salen y toman vino sobre los matorrales. Ellos no saben que los estoy inventando. Uno de ellos emprende el vuelo, y otro se hunde en la tierra. Dos siguen bebiendo y fumando. Uno se vuelve ceniza y otro cae al suelo en forma de río. Todos aplauden por la obra. Todos menos yo, que no puedo recuperarme de lo que acabo de ver.

Frida Kahlo, née Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón, was born at her family's Mexico City home, La Casa Azul (the Blue House). Friday faced difficult emotional and physical obstacles from an early age. Her parents were unhappy together and made no secret of the conflict between them. When Frida was six, she contracted polio, which affected the growth of her legs and ultimately resulted in her right leg being shorter and thinner than her left. Aside from her three sisters, Frida was isolated from other children because of her illness. In the shadow of her parents' poor relationship, Frida had a tense connection with her mother, whom she admired for her intellect but resented for her devotion to Catholicism. Frida was closer to her father, who mentored her in many subjects, including his his own artistic medium, photography. She had a keen aesthetic sensibility from an early age but did not aspire to become an artist. She wanted to become a doctor.

One afternoon when she was eighteen, a bus she was riding collided with a streetcar. There were several fatalities among the passengers, and Frida herself was nearly killed. Several of her ribs, both her legs, and her collarbone were broken, and many of her spinal vertebrae were displaced. Most gruesomely, an iron handrail impaled her lower body, breaking her pelvis. 

Frida spent many months recovering from the accident in her bed at La Casa Azul. She gave up on returning to her studies to become a doctor. However, she contemplated that perhaps she could combine her interest in science with her artistic abilities and become a competent medical illustrator. Having nothing but...

The coming change caused by the pandemic first manifested itself in dreams. At the beginnings of psychology, Freud assumed that one must turn to them - to bring out of the unconscious sphere in order to expose one's desires, cravings, fears. Today, many psychologists claim that such attitude is wrong, and that what is instinctive allows us to live smoothly. Our mind is a cosmos in which too much concentration, too much exposure of certain components, manipulation of the unconscious makes us lose ourselves.Capitalism has always used human problems as a tool to exploit social groups. These issues has been pointed out, conceptualized or created as new ones. Through over-interpretation it appropriated the unconscious zone for these purposes. As a result, our subconsciousness ceased to be pure, free.

The pandemic as a time when many everyday phenomena forced by work were changed or pushed aside, revealed this state through dreams. For art, the pure unconsciousness is a natural matter of action that the "Pandemic consequence: dreams" exhibition wishes to selflessly reveal.

The exhibition was part of the Warsaw Gallery Weekend 2020.

Ace of Swords_trial_03 

Ace of Swords in Tarot stands for intellectual power and mental agency. It refers to our rationality and intellectual processing. My work was created during the  pandemic time when rational structures are being questioned. 

Ace of Swords is part of my Handmade Spiritismus project, which focuses on domestic esoteric practices and DIY spirituality. It derives from my fascination with XIX-th century spiritistic séances which were mainly held in private houses as somewhat intimate rituals of the middle class and bourgeoisie. Their main goal was to connect with the non-material world. Séances were organised without the official spiritual agent such as priest and usually with the use of everyday objects. 

I look for vernacular equivalents of such “séances” in modern times, focusing on different divination techniques – for example tarot. 

During the pandemic time, the hand became a recurring refrain – just like in a series of tarot aces which symbolise 4 basic elements. Hand acts as a controller. It proudly holds the emblem of its power. 

My Ace of Swords is a domestic reconstruction, a trial version of home-manufactured recreation of “mystical truths of divination” with the use of the simplest and easily accessible materials.
