WIP Wednesday 3/29
I'm sneaking in just under the wire tonight. This is a bit of the follow-up to All is Not Lost where Mac was kidnapped and held hostage by Murdoc but got away on his own.
~~
Mac lay in a sleeping bag on his back deck, staring at the sky. Stars were few and far between because of the light pollution, but he loved being outside anyway. A light breeze ruffled his hair, and he could smell the smoke from the fire burning itself out in the fire pit.
Tomorrow would mark the one-year anniversary of the day that Murdoc had taken him from the wreck of Jack's car, and it had been about six months since he had killed Murdoc and escaped that awful Arizona warehouse. For the first month after he was released from the hospital, he slept outside in this very sleeping bag, craving the wide open space of his exposed deck.
Jack, Bozer, and Riley took turns sleeping outside with him. They were afraid to let him out of their sight for a solid two months, and even now, they had trouble leaving him alone for too long. Mac hadn't minded in the early days, too preoccupied with his own injuries and detoxing from the drugs Murdoc had steadily fed him.
These days, it was a little harder to handle their near-constant supervision. He was doing a lot better. His therapist had changed their schedule so that they only met once a week now, and he was working most days in the Phoenix lab to develop a new tracking device for agents, plus a dozen other projects.
Matty had made it clear that he was not going into the field until she thought it was time, and he was doing his best to show her that he had recovered. What Murdoc had done to him would always be with him, but he was stronger than anyone gave him credit for, and he would not let it ruin his life.
One of the deck doors opened and footsteps moved toward him, but Mac didn't look away from the sky. He could tell it was Jack by the clomp of his well-worn boots.

2x04 X-Ray + Penny tag: What happens after Mac escapes Murdoc's turture room and emerges from that manhole...
For the June Flashfic Writealong June 18 Prompts: "A bad penny always turns up" and "Help":
Mac’s arms shake as he pushes up against the manhole cover. It’s heavy iron, meant to be lifted from the outside. He can barely manage to keep himself from falling off the ladder as he presses against it. Rumbles come and go from the other side. Cars. The road he’s about to emerge onto is going to be a busy one, but busy is good. Busy means lots of bystanders. He can disappear into the crowd. He can’t hear Murdoc in the tunnels right now but he knows the assassin is down there, still following him. And he can’t go back. He can’t. He can’t.

I’m trying to write around 300 words every day and I couldn’t go to bed unless I at least tried to sit down and write. I’m happy to say that I slaved away and at the end wrote over a thousand words. Yay!

I originally started this story in 2021 for Whumptober, but have recently done an update so I thought I’d give it some love on Tumblr.
@teddythecat1234 I hope this latest chapter wrecks you a little, I had a lot of fun writing it : D
@panchostokes - the latest chapter might appeal to you :)
@saplesss-tree - you write such good whump I’d love to know what you think !
Our favourite gang of heroes has been captured and Murdoc forces Mac to make a horrible choice
Mac had his arms out to keep his balance as he stepped forward. Suddenly he was on the very edge of the rocks and was trying hard not to look down or fall. This wasn’t an easy feat under normal circumstances but burdened by handmade climbing gear on both his legs made this horrible task even more difficult. He almost didn’t need to look at the forest floor below him, the air whistling below told him all he needed to.
“Come on MacGyver! Turn around so I can see your charming face”

Dude you’ve gotta give me your thoughts on this because I’m going crazy thinking about it
Murdoc being an asset that Jack’s in charge of(I’m thinking of the show Blacklist type deal) and jack meets Mac because of Murdoc’s fixation on him.
Idk. Maybe Murdoc is alway talking about him and Jack feels the need to check up on the poor blond kid. Maybe Murdoc is always comparing Jack to Mac and Jack feels the need to stalk the kid to figure out what it is about this kid that Murdoc is obsessed with.
So like??? Jack almost being like his handler??
Murdoc cooperates with them because of his son, because that’s his one most precious thing in his life and because of the life he lives, he wants his son protected at all times
He’s still in custody but when people call him for a hit, he gets let out(?) to “deal” with it and find the people who put the hit out in the first place
Jack hates it of course. Murdoc is a very intelligent and crazy person, so of course he gets away with a lot more than he’s ever told Jack
But then there’s the hit on Mac; MIT grad/MIT dropout for the army/recruited for DXS/whatever, and the fact that Mac has really never done anything wrong in his life just strikes a cord with Murdoc because there has to be something that warranted someone wanting him dead
So Murdoc does his thing or whatever, but Mac’s such a puzzling person that he does just kinda start stalking him and regularly reports anything to Jack, and Jack knows that whenever he gets an obsession that it never tends to end well
And that’s when Jack starts checking up on Mac, after the he’s got a really fucked up life you know, daddy dearest doesn’t care for his well being at all and it’s surprising how many people actually want him dead and just pretty much all of Murdoc’s free time is spent talking about Mac and Jack needs to make sure nothing happens because it’ll be his ass if Murdoc does anything
And he hates to admit it but Murdoc was right about Mac’s life and how shit it is in comparison to how young he is, so maybe after a mission or something where something dramatic™️ happens, Jack just kinda starts talking to Mac and checking that he’s alright and goes ‘Ah shit I have a son now’

Episode idea…
… Someone kidnaps Mac and uses him as leverage to force Jack to hunt down and assassinate someone, w/ Riley and Bozer getting the insanely difficult task of trying to do a complicated dance of protecting the target from Jack while he tries to give them as much leeway as possible without being obvious, while they also try to figure out who has Mac and rescue him.
Naturally the resolution would involve Mac partially breaking out himself, Jack getting to beat the hell out the people behind it.
