Ever since hearing about/watching the 2021 Awdry Christmas lecture, I’ve been thinking about how Awdry’s notes refer to Duke as both a “he” and “she.”
In my headcanon/AU, I imagine Duke hearing that typo. Maybe it’s in a monograph that’s going around. Maybe it’s still a YouTube video in that universe, streamed on a laptop for the SKR’s engines. Regardless of how, Duke blinks at being called a “she.”
The others ask if it bothers him. He tells the truth: no, it doesn’t. There’s no harm behind it. “It was simply an accident,” he says. Yet he feels a pang in his cylinders.
Soon, he realizes that he didn’t want it to be an accident.
All his life, Duke assumed that he was only a “he.” His builders and managers told him so. He did feel like a “he” a lot of the time, and he didn’t have the space or energy to probe any deeper on the MSR.
But he’s on the SR now. He knows nobody’ll kick up a fuss, trusts everyone here. So he asks them all to call him a “she” some days — on days when “he” doesn’t settle quite right.
And it feels wonderful. It’s the same joy she felt when Stuart and Falcon called her Granpuff for the first time. “I’m not one for sentimentalities,” she says one evening, “but I truly feel… fuller, in a sense.”
Later, Rheneas and Rusty suggest the idea of different lamp irons for Duke. On days when Duke’s a “he,” he can wear a lamp with a copper handle. On days when Duke’s a “she,” she can wear a lamp with a brass handle. Duke loves this, taking it up once the works have the lamps ready. It’s quick and efficient communication.
“For once, ye’re plain-speakin’,” Duncan says once he sees the lamps. But he’s smiling. Duke smiles back, chuckling at Rusty’s eye-roll.
The only real bit of angst Duke feels over this whole thing is her name. She wants to keep it because she’s very proud of it, but she worries that His Grace wouldn’t think it proper anymore. “I couldn’t bear it if he asked me to be ‘Duchess’ on those days,” he admits.
“He won’t do that,” Skarloey tells him. “And even if he asks, you don’t have to give him anything. This isn’t a train to pull, after all. It’s something entirely yours.”
“We’re with you, Granpuff,” Peter Sam says, soft and gentle.
Sir Handel sits up tall. “He’ll have to get through us.”
In the end, Sir Robert expresses happiness on Duke’s behalf. “A title is supposed to empower you. If you feel strengthened by it, emboldened by it, then I’d say it’s the right fit!”
Duke is grateful. (So are Sir Handel and Peter Sam, who shelve their plans of vengeance on Sir Robert for saying anything different.) And life goes on even brighter and richer than before.

When Scully wakes, he is in her bed.
She didn’t expect him to still be there. No one in her life ever stays, certainly not anyone good.
Which is why she has to end it. They will take him from her like they’ve taken all good things in her life.
And like all good things in her life, this one can’t last.
She dresses quietly and drives to the building on autopilot, runs a brush through sleep-mussed hair. She doesn’t want to look at herself in the mirror but she catches a glimpse as she enters the building.
She looks tired. Sick.
She is tired and sick. They’ve been reluctant to give her this last bout of treatment, saying her information has been drying up, and what are they keeping her around for, then?
Skinner isn’t there when she knocks on his door. She knew he wouldn’t be. Instead, he is, the man with smoke forever clouding his face.
“I can’t do this anymore,” she says, shutting the door behind her. She hates how her voice trembles. “I won’t.”
“You don’t have a choice.”
“You think I won’t die to get away from you?” she asks.
“You didn’t want to two years ago.”
“Two years ago I wasn’t this,” she says. “I wasn’t—wasn’t a traitor, wasn’t betraying my country, two years ago I had something to live for.”
She doesn’t know why she’s admitting this to him of all people. Maybe because she doesn’t care.
“You’re making a mistake,” he says. “We will end you.”
You already have, she thinks.
“Go ahead,” she says and turns towards the door.
“Dana,” he says, and there’s a warning in his tone. “We’ll end him. You know we can do it.”
This makes her stop. Pause.
“What do I care if you destroy Fox Mulder,” she says. “He means nothing to me.”
It’s the only lie she’s ever told that tastes bitter on her tongue.

MSR, post "All Things"
It's the first time they've gone out together as a couple. Well. Gone out is an overstatement; it's lunch in the J. Edgar Hoover building's cafeteria; someplace she's pretty sure Mulder has only set foot in once in his entire FBI career.
It's good—the food. Better than she expected for government food. It's a step up from airline food in that it's edible and at least mildly delicious.
What she can't get over is the staring.
Mulder keeps tapping his fingers on the table. They sit across from each other, her foot occasionally brushing his, and it really does feel like everyone in the building is watching them.
Do they know? Can they sense it—the change between the two of them? To her it feels palpable.
She reaches for his hand, if only to still his fingers. He startles, looks at her.
"Is this okay?" she asks, and he nods. She smiles reassuringly, not letting go of his hand for the rest of lunch until they stand to clear their trays.
She reaches for his hand again as they walk back down to the basement, on impulse. But she finds herself hesitating, suddenly.
As if he can read her mind, Mulder reaches down and intertwines his own fingers with hers.
"Who cares what they think?" he asks, and she nods, squeezing his hand, content as always to let him reassure her.

I think it’s so funny when negative emotions cancel themselves out. I’ll be nervous about a presentation but I’m too tired to be nervous. Or you’re not in the mood to get something done but due date panic gives you motivation. You’re sleep deprived but something makes you mad and wakes you up. The brain is incredible. What a shit show.

When have you first watched TXF? What is your favorite arc? What are your favorite MSR moments? They’re my all time favorites. I still read fanfic about them.
I first watched the show in December of 2020 (and for the first week mistakenly thought it wasn't going to be a new fixation...) to February 2021. I actually finished it on Scully's birthday. In my defense, I didn't know that it was her birthday until part of the way through watching MSIV!
My favorite arc? The MSR arc, of course! But my serious favorite is the Emily arc because, aside from Mulder and Scully, she's my favorite character. (You guys should start sending me Emily prompts again, even if you just get them from a random generator. They were so much fun to write.)
My favorite MSR moments are their handshake in the pilot, Mulder cupping Scully's cheek in "Beyond the Sea," Scully fiddling with Mulder's tie (she's such a flirt) in "Rush," their baseball date in "The Unnatural," and literally all of their interactions in season two before "Duane Barry."

Okay, so I just watched The Unnatural and- I have literally no words. The MSR is just glorious in this episode ??? Like, they barely interact through the ep, but when they do, it's so flirty and fun ?? They're best friends in love, your honor. I mean, I thought, before seeing the ep, that the whole baseball game at the end was some sort of ploy for the investigation which I believed to be in the middle or early episode. And then I finally watched it and it's at the end and has absolutely nothing to do with an investigation and it's just Mulder and Scully having fun and flirting and touching each other and just being wholesome ??? With the little fight for who gets to put hands on the middle of the bat ??? And the cute little banter ??? AND THE WAY MULDER WHISPERS IN HER EAR ????

Thinking of Mulder, touch-starved because nobody ever tried to give him a hug (because somehow, I can't imagine Phoebe or Diana being affectionate, and we all know his parents became distant after Samantha's abduction). Thinking of Mulder having to learn how to be touched, how to be held. Learning how to allow himself to be loved. Thinking of Scully being so, so patient with him, slowly easing him into tender touch until he stops stiffening in surprise when she hugs him from behind. Thinking about Mulder learning he's worth being loved through witnessing Scully's care and love for him. Thinking about them healing together, making each other better, smoothing over their sharp edges.
Thinking about them loving each other so much that they can never quite believe it but never stops wanting to believe in it nevertheless.

I may be projecting, but I like to think of Scully as someone who isn't overtly physical ? I mean, she likes it when it's people she loves and trusts (i like to imagine she never refuses a hug from her mum, she doesn't refrain from ruffling her younger brother's hair to annoy him when they're children, and she used to like to hang out with Melissa on the couch, shoulders against shoulders, to watch the TV), but apart from that, she's reserved. The times when we see her be physical with other people (apart from Mulder) is usually to comfort them, and usually she just places her hand on their shoulders. (there is this one time she kisses Skinner on the mouth, but i'm pretty sure she was so lost in the euphoria of finding Mulder she didn't think about it. i like to think she couldn't look Skinner in the eyes afterwards).
Anyway, for someone so put together like her, so reserved, both emotionally and physically, it must have been weird to be parternered with Mulder, who is a very physical person. He's always in her personal space, always with his hand on her back, and I don't know, but there's something so trusting about this. About being someone who isn't very physical but allowing this special person to touch you because you like their touch. Because Scully doesn't show signs of being bothered by this, which means she doesn't mind, which means she likes Mulder's touch in particular.
I have no idea where I'm going with this, I might just be screaming into the void, but the simple idea of a physically reserved Scully allowing Mulder to touch her because she likes his touch, and then actually initiating the touching because she likes touching him too, is so dear to me. (and then i think about the pilot, where she leans into him, terrified, already trusting him enough to touch him like that after knowing him for like two days, and- they're insane for making me emotional like that)

Squeeze is such an iconic episode. Not only does it gives us the memorable ''Do you think I'm spooky ?'' scene but it also gives us : Mulder in glasses, his horrible ties, Scully's impeccable fashion sense, Mulder being territorial over Scully, Scully realizing she loves her work and loves working with Mulder, Scully saying Mulder is a great agent, a creepy as fuck monster, Mulder's worst joke ever (''Somebody having a garage sale'') and Mulder's best joke ever (''Is there any way I can get it off my fingers quickly without betraying my cool exterior ?''), an emotional moment of an old man finally getting closure over his worst case ever, Scully roasting the hell out of Colton (''Then I can't wait `til you fall off and land on your ass''), Mulder thinking Scully got the right guy and fighting to make her realize, and finally the soft shoulder touch at the end.

Cody Johnson - Human: The Double Album
So today on the MSR (Midnight Star Review), I will like to talk about the latest album from Country Music Superstar Cody Johnson. The new project is titled "Human: The Double Album" was released on Friday October 8th, 2021. But before we dive into the latest album from Cody. Let's first talk about his career.
Some of his biggest singles before this new CD are songs like "On my way to you", "Dear rodeo" with Reba, & "Nothin' on you". So it was a question if I even wanted to pick up this album and I even picked it up later than I should have. And I was truly wrong in that decision. There are 18 tracks on this 2 CD set. And let's talk about some of the songs now.
And I truly wanted to talk about every single song from this album. The lead single from the project is a contender for the song of the year "'Til you can't" and of course "Human" the title track. Revival Rewatch - Fic Recs
Need something to read to pass the time waiting for date night to start while your (past - present? - future) partner tears his (your?) Unremarkable House apart in search of a lost Twilight Zone episode that he’s sure is somewhere in this pile of old vhs tapes? I don’t read a lot of revival fics but here are a few I can recommend:

You don’t always realize the momentous things as they’re happening, and so he’d needled her a little; without any thought to his lost sister, he’d used his snottiest big brother voice and accused her of spying. S10 Rewatch - MSR
I’m not even sure where to start here because all of the writers except CC seemed to pretty much ignore the break up, and CC had no interest in really exploring why they broke up or what it would mean to start working together again post break up. I certainly would have been on board with the show exploring the fissures in their relationship - if it actually wanted to take seriously their personal and shared traumas and how terrible they’ve historically been at communicating. (Although I don’t think they would have even needed to break up if that was the aim - people can be in a relationship and have issues and work through those issues you know! Might actually be interesting to watch!)
But all we get is one line by a random character about how Scully left because of Mulder’s endogenous depression?? Bullshit. And once they start working together again they’re fine. If there was supposed to be some kind of arc this season where they come back to each other (without working through any of the issues that tore them apart apparently) then I guess it all happened when Scully agreed to go back the X-Files in the first episode? Because literally nothing in the rest of the season would have to be different if they had never broken up… Does the Mulder who shows up - to sit with her at her mother’s hospital bed and hold her as she cries and go back to work with her even though it’s a terrible fucking idea and sit and listen as she grieves the answers she’ll never get about her mother and her son - seem like a man dealing with his ex who he still works with or like a man showing up for and supporting the most important person in his life, the love of his life, no matter how complicated the current status of their relationship?
So what was the fucking point of the break up this season? To get back to that Schrodinger’s box place the original series lingered in for far too long where they both were and were not in a relationship as long as the show didn’t directly acknowledge it? Because that ship fucking sailed a long time ago and if CC really wanted to capture the old magic he would have put Mulder and Scully on screen together for more than two minutes.

Favourite time of year: I would have to say autumn as it’s a nice break from the usual hot summer here but not cold enough yet for lots of blankets. And it doesn’t have the pollen of spring to worry about 😂
Comfort food: It would have to be Tonkostu ramen with extra pork belly. But it has to from a proper ramen booth/restaurant as it’s always the best from there.
Do you collect something?: I used to collect Lion King stuff but now it’s just books. I collect (hoard) books.
Favourite drink: A large green peach iced tea with lychee jelly from a bubble tea/boba shop. And my favourite alcoholic drink (though I rarely drink) is a Fruit Tingle.

Something I really loved about this show were the queer friendships, with Greta and Jo, and Carson and Max. Those close bonds between gays that have nothing to do with romance, just a shared camaraderie, the security of knowing your safe with this person, the understanding of shared experiences. It feel very authentic to the queer experience, but we don’t get to see them often enough in media, probably because they normally require more than two gay characters which a lot of writers seem to think is asking too much.
