Twenty-five years ago, the residents of Eigg completed the purchase of their island. It marked the end to a system of absentee landlords and the start of a time of innovation and growth.
The buyout on June 12th 1997 was to address problems islanders were having with absentee landlords, including lack of home and business security, unemployment and poor housing. Since the islanders came together to buy the island for £1.5 million, the population has grown from 64 to more than 100, including families with young children.
The Isle of Eigg Heritage Trust was set up to be a guardian of the island’s independence. It acts as a de facto government, with three subsidiaries to focus on the islanders’ three main priorities: Eigg Trading Limited, Eigg Construction Limited and Eigg Electric Ltd.
Eigg Electrical Ltd has overseen the creation of an electricity grid powered by sustainable sources, from micro hydro, solar and wind schemes, to replace the previous system, under which each household organised their own power.
The community shop, a post office and a tea room fall under the ownership of Eigg Trading Limited, while Eigg Construction carries out building works, from house building to smaller repairs.
While most decisions get made without conflict, some islanders are still getting used to the change of mindset that accompanies self-governance. ​“We still struggle with an us-v-them mentality,” Sarah Boden, trust director, said in an interview.  ​“Sometimes decisions get made and people moan about ​‘the Trust this’ or ​‘the Trust that’. You have to remind them that they are the Trust.”
Covering just 3,000 hectares, Eigg is an incredibly diverse island and includes a range of habitats including native ash and hazel woodland, peatlands, beaches and high cliffs. It is sometimes referred to as the ‘Isle of Flowers’ because of the many hundreds of different plants that can be found there.
In 2016, 115 species of bird, 83 of which are known to have bred, were recorded on Eigg as well as hundreds of different butterflies, moths and other insects. There were also regular sightings of marine mammals including seals, dolphins and minke whales.
This year a £3 million-plus upgrade of An Laimhrig community hub is also nearing completion, just last night  a concert was held featuring bands who played at the buyout ceilidh.
Linsay Chalmers, development manager, Community Land Scotland, said the Eigg purchase sparked a wave of community buyouts in Scotland that continues to this day.
“In 1997, their situation was dire and the people of Eigg felt they had no choice but to buy the island.
“But they quickly demonstrated what can be achieved when a community owns its land and has control over its own destiny.

CrowPi wirbt für den neuen Raspberry Pi Laptop. Ein Pi 4 im Laptopgehäuse. Die große Frage ist aber: Macht das Sinn?

Der Raspberry Pi hat eine gigantische Fangemeinde und ist nicht nur unter Bastlern beliebt. Der kleine Einplatinenrechner der Raspberry Pi Foundation UK muss eigentlich kaum noch weiter vorgestellt werden. Durch die GPIO Pins Leiste lassen sich viele tolle Projekte realisieren. Wie wäre es also wenn der Pi ein Laptop sei? Grundsätzlich ist das eine schöne Idee. Allerdings nicht neu, denn allein dieser Anbieter mit dem CrowPi schickt bereits seit Jahren solche Lösungen ins Rennen und ist wie gesagt nicht der einzige Hersteller, welche einen Pi mobil macht.

Das neue Modell ist vom Design viel attraktiver geworden und auch technisch viel besser gelöst als seine Vorgänger oder andere Modelle von Mitbewerbern. Konzipiert ist der CrowPi für den Raspberry Pi 4 Einplatinenrechner und den kann man auch auf Wunsch gleich mitbestellen. Der Pi 4 unterscheidet sich eben wesentlich von den übrigen Raspberry Pi Modellen allein schon durch die Schnittstellenbelegung und Ausrichtung. Zwei Varianten gibt es im Prinzip von dieser Laptop Version. Variante Eins, den CrowPi solo (Basic Kit), Variante 2 (Advanced Kit) enthält ein Starterkit mit zahlreichen Sensoren für zahlreiche Pi Projekte.
Dabei ist der CrowPi eigentlich selbst ja kein Laptop, sondern ein Laptopgehäuse mit Tastatur und Monitor, Akku und ein paar weiteren Dingen. Erst durch den Raspberry Pi Einbau wird überhaupt sowas wie ein Laptop daraus. Dann entsteht ein Laoptop in dem ein Pi seine Arbeit verrichtet und selbigen so mobil macht ihn überall mithinnehmen zu können. Weder das Display noch der Rest überzeugen aber im Vergleich zu einem regulären Laptop, Notebook oder Chromebook. Da wäre der Ansatz eigentlich viel interessanter Projekte für jeden PC, Mac oder Chromebooks zugänglich zu machen indem man dort eben ein entsürechendes Modul anschließen kann. Ein quasi Adapter mit GPIO Funktionalität.
Bereits seit 2016 gibt es oder gab es da einen solchen Ansatz. Der AxiCat. Irgendwie hat sich das aber nicht so recht verbreitet und durchgesetzt. Heute ist ein anderer Weg einen Raspberry Pi Pico dafür zu nutzen. Allerdings mit der Einschränkung das Erstens dort eben an Stelle von einem vollwertigen Python nur Micropython zum Einsatz kommen kann. Zweitens das der Pi Pico kein RTC Modul und damit kein Zeitgefühl an Board hat. Dafür ist der Pico aber extrem günstig!
Schauen wir uns die Maximal-Konfiguration an, wobei die Farbe des Tastaurrahmens auszuwähllen keinen Einfluss auf den Preis hat. Wir landen dann bei 515,00 US-$. Abzüglich eines Angebotsnachlasses sind es dann immernoch rund 480 Dollar. Bei aller Liebe muss man da schon ein echter Raspberry Pi Fan sein, denn dafür bekommt man allerlei andere Computer und Laptops die deutlich mehr Power unter der Haube haben und in der Regel viel bessere Displays und auch Lautsprecher verbaut haben.
Wenn Ihr dennoch euch einen CrowPi einmal selbst zusammenstellen wollt und mehr erfahren möchtet, so bietet sich dazu an die Website des Herstellers anzuschauen. Hier könnt Ihr euch euren Pi4 Laptop CrowPi4 zusammenstellen und bei Bedarf auch bestellen. Dann kommt das Teil irgendwann aus China zu euch nach Hause. CrowPi ist nämlich eine Marke von Elecrow Shenzhen Yikenuo Technology Development Co., Ltd.! Bei solchen bestellungen ist auch zu beachten, dass diese Geräte durch den Zoll müssen!
Fazit: Leider konnte ich den CrowPi nicht persönlich testen. Auch hätte ich gerne bei der Gelegenheit eine andere Speicherlösung, weg von Micro USB Karten. Allein das bringt einem Pi bereits eine enorme Verbesserung. Möglich, dass bei einem persönlichen Test die Begeisterung steigt, doch durch den eigentlich hohen Preis insgesamt finde ich persönlich das Ganze eher unattraktiv. Wie gsagt eine ganz persönliche Meinung! Echte Fans dürften sich ggf. davon nicht abhalten damit die Sammlung zu erweitern.

We delivered efficient operational execution following our decision, in the second quarter of 2023, to scale down other activities and focus on NetNut’s operations,” said Shachar Daniel, Alarum’s Chief Executive Officer.
For the full year 2023, Alarum reported total revenues of $26.5 million compared to $18.6 million for the 2022 year. NetNut alone contributed $21.3 million to overall revenue, which represented an impressive 150% year-over-year growth compared to its 2022 revenue of $8.5 million. Cost of revenue, R&D, sales & marketing, as well as general & administrative costs all saw a decrease compared to 2022. The company did report a goodwill and intangibles impairment loss of $8.8 million. However, this was due to the scale-down of CyberKick and its cash-generating unit. Overall, the company reported an adjusted EBITDA of $5.2 million for the full year 2023 compared to an adjusted EBITDA loss of $8.5 million for 2022.
Overall, the results are very impressive, particularly Alarum’s Q4 results, which represent a full quarter of its NetNut-centralized strategy. The quarter demonstrated that NetNut’s growth is absolutely impressive and worth the full focus and attention of the company. The full-year results were also very good and showed a very clear improvement on the top and bottom lines compared to 2022.
