Good Stuff: EVERY MF DOOM ALBUM (1)
Tumblr media
And if you can believe it, it's Doomsday once again. MF DOOM has been at the top as one of my all time favorite rappers, but I've admittedly never really delved into his discography beyond the occasional single I vibed with. So for this month this year, that changes as I marathoned most of the Metalface's career. We're only doing the solo and main collab albums this year. No EPs, remix albums or compilations, we're doing that along with KMD's works next time. Also don't expect detailed analyses of these, I'm both not a Monkey of musical expertise or actually researching anything for more than 3 minutes. We're going in chronological order, let's hit it.
OPERATION: DOOMSDAY (1999)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prod: MF DOOM Absolute Banger Track: 'The Finest' Surprise MVP: 'Gas Drawls'
This is how you do a debut; exhibiting the best strength of DOOM's full throttle approach to verse and defining his new character as well as King Geedorah in certain tracks. It is weird hearing Dumile through the years where this and his time in KMD are when he sounds vocally younger. It's an overall consistent turn-of-the-century bop that you can feel the emcee's fire being made into this.
TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER (JUNE '03)
Tumblr media
Prod: Metal Fingered Villain, E.Mason Absolute Banger Track: 'Krazy World' ft. Gigan Surprise MVP: 'Fazers'
I'll be real, Geedorah is the weakest link persona and it doesn't help that this album, while consistent, didn't strike a chord with me. Maybe it's because I'm not a big kaijuu fan, maybe because the distinction lacks here compared to the next persona in the universe. Overall, it's still good, continuing on rampaging energy founded from the previous, but it's not one I could get into as much as I would've hoped.
VAUDEVILLE VILLAIN (SEPTEMBER '03)
Tumblr media
Prod.: King Honey, Heat Sensor, Max Bill, RJD2, Mr Ten Absolute Banger Track: 'Vaudeville Villain' Surprise MVP: 'Open Mic Pt. 1 & 2 (Skit)'
If Geedorah showed that DOOM was more than a fluke emcee, Viktor Vaughn reset the meta and laughed maniacally while doing it. The power in this came from the story it told, more explicit than the previous, and it was a consistent banger throughout. The Viktor alias feels like a prototype for what's to come; a nasty Stagolee type that'd spit in your direction and songs like Lickupon and Raedawn reflect that. Especially loved the open mic skits cuz that was a rare time I laughed listening to music.
MADVILLAINY (MARCH '04)
Tumblr media
Prod.: Madlib, MF DOOM Absolute Banger Track: 'Figaro'/'Accordion' Surprise MVP: 'Rainbows'
I always heard about how this was one of the greatest MF DOOM album ever, if not the GOAT of rap period. And they weren't lying, this album is fucking powerful. It is flawless? To me, no. The only real critiques I have is that '3.214' in Madvillainy 2 was 'Great Day' done better and I couldn't vibe 'Rhinestone Cowboy's instrumental. Otherwise, the synergy and nonstop lyrical power of DOOM & Madlib here is actual peak. It's I say on par with Kendrick Lamar's TPAB where every track speaks of the MC at his most motivated. I'll say if Vaudeville Villain worked with him at his nastiest, this is him at his most imposing if that makes sense. This is where I felt they were having a grand old time making this, especially considering the story surrounding its production.
VV:2 (AUGUST '04)
Tumblr media
Prod.: System D-128, Diplo, DiViNCi, Swamburger, Session 31, DJ I.N.C., Dub-L, The Analears Absolute Banger Track: 'Fall Back/Titty Fat' Surprise MVP: 'R.A.P. G.A.M.E.' ft. Manchild, Iz-Real
I think it's no surprise to say this is the weakest album in the timeline. This definitely has an air of diminishing returns where it not only felt like Viktor was barely in it, it's like he didn't want to be in this. It doesn't help that for all the producers you see, you get a 30 minute album that feels like Viktor was in it for a third of that. The monologues feel scattershot and with more guests than favorable that barely left an impression. Dumile is good as usual, it's everything else that really bogged this down.
MM..FOOD (NOVEMBER '04)
Tumblr media
Prod.: MF DOOM, Madlib, Count Bass D, PNS Absolute Banger Track: 'Rapp Snitch Knishes' ft. Mr. Fantastik Surprise MVP: 'Guinnesses' ft. Angelika & 4ize
When it comes to DOOM's peak, Madvillainy is the strongest album while Mm..Food is the most memorable. This is a consistently bop where the concept theme makes for a more memorable vibe. I mean if Rapp Snitch Knishes wasn't on here, I would have a hard time picking the absolute best single. One day, it's Hoe Cakes. No, Beef Rapp. No, Deep Fried Frenz. Nevermind, it'd be One Beer. Mm..Food is that album where most of the songs stick with you and that's barely getting into the fun interludes using the old Spider-Man and Fantastic Four cartoons. This feels like the flipside of Vaudeville Villain where the atmosphere's uplifting and everyone's enjoying themselves. Plus again, it has Rapp Snitch Knishes, one of the all time greatest rap songs. Need I say more?
THE MOUSE AND THE MASK (2005)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prod.: Danger Mouse Absolute Banger Track: 'Old School' ft. Talib Kweli Surprise MVP: 'Mince Meat'
If Madvillainy was the strongest hitting, Mm..Food being the consistent bop, Mouse and the Mask I consider the most fun. This has notably been labeled the "Adult Swim album" and frankly, if it combined with Occult Hymn was all we got for a thematic soundtrack for the channel, I would've been more than satisfied. Danger Doom is great if you're familiar with early era AS and if you're not, then this'll all probably feel annoying. Otherwise, this is the most fun knowing the references and hearing many of the classic characters like Aqua Teen and Brak. I'm in a way thankful this was their only collab with Adult Swim because I don't want to imagine MF DOOM trying to make bars for Rick & Morty; that... would wound my soul.
Now I said this marathon would be chronological, but I feel I had to jump ahead to the remaining collaborative albums since I wanna save DOOM's final solo for last...
KEY TO THE KUFFS (2012)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prod.: Jneiro Jarel Absolute Banger Track: 'Winter Blues' ft. Indigo Surprise MVP: 'Banished'
Honestly, I know now how old Gorillaz fans felt when the band went shifted to synth pop post Plastic Beach. Thanks to youtuber Absurd Existence, shoutout to them, I decided to listen to the Butter version. It did not help because I could not vibe with the more techno sounds from JJ; the beats don't have the comical fun like Mouse or the consistent DJ power that Madlib brought. Key to the Kuffs isn't bad, but while DOOM doesn't falter in the least here, it's not as strong as I hoped.
NEHRUVIANDOOM (2014)
Tumblr media
Prod.: MF DOOM Absolute Banger Track: 'Caskets' ft. DOOM Surprise MVP: 'Om'
I mean... never think you can appreciate a king rapper until you hear from an amateur. Don't get me wrong, it must've been great getting to collab with the villain himself, DOOM taking the backseat for a possible protege, but the emcee's bars felt very basic and inexperienced to me. It doesn't help that it felt like DOOM pulled random tracks from a Special Herb volume; nothing for this had as impactful a flow as it could have while I could understand the theme thanks to the interludes. Hell the absolute banger track is the only one of nine there I really enjoyed because DOOM is featured in it and Bishop was able to keep up and it felt like his moment too. I don't hold it against Bishop, as if he was too good to work with Dumile. The album's not bad, but I was just not into most of this whether or not DOOM was producing.
CZARFACE MEETS METAL FACE (2018)
Tumblr media
Prod.: 7L, Jeremy Page, Todd Spafadore Absolute Banger Track: 'Meddle with Metal' Surprise MVP: 'Captain Crunch'
This marks the last full album Dumile would do before his death and it feels like a match made in heaven. It's a great throwback to 90s underground and Czarface is THE go-to for nerdcore rap. Then again, this admittedly didn't have the same highs as Mouse and the Mask even when there barely exists an actual bad track on this. There were a couple I noticed done better with a remixed beat that I came across way before listening but I can't spoil here. I guess my overall beef was that I couldn't vibe as much with Czarface and the runtime doesn't help admittedly. I recognize the strengths of Czar, but it's an album I'm not as much in a rush to replay.
SUPER WHAT? (2021)
Tumblr media
Prod.: The Czar-keys Absolute Banger Track: 'Break Into Action' Surprise MVP: 'The King and Eye' ft. DMC / 'DOOM Unto Others'
I'll say this album was just what the world needed regarding any posthumous work from the villain. I think it works better than their previous LP not only because the runtime, but the beats I enjoyed better here because it's a more upbeat bop. Just saying, The King and Eye is one of my favorite openers to an album and it's emblematic to this feeling like a celebration of sorts while still having meaningful dark themes behind the tracks, especially when it was around COVID's stronger period. I recommend this if you want to get an more digestible feel of Czarface's music because I honestly prefer it over Czar Meets Metal.
BORN LIKE THIS (2009)
Tumblr media
Prod.: DOOM, Mr. Chop, J Dilla, Madlib, Jake One Absolute Banger Track: 'Gazzillion Ear' Surprise MVP: 'That's That'
Consider it a theory, but this felt like Dumile's genuine final solo record whether or not he was gonna live longer; a tonal inverse of Operation Doomsday where he wanted to immortalize how far he came as an emcee and producer with the album having a loop with the end and beginning. Speaking of tone, this really feels like the darkest album with DOOM at his gruffest popping off for minutes on end. I mean it has ''Batty Boyz" making this instantly nastier than I expected. The use of Bukowski's "Dinosauria, We" and taking the "MF" out his name really shows that he was serious about his skill here and this was him taking a bow in a way. An imperfect but hardknocking album to close this marathon.
Next to Kendrick Lamar, I have seen very rare artists manage to be as consistently versatile and great as Dumile. He was basically a king of underground hip-hop and I wouldn't have done this if I thought his legacy wasn't worth remembering. Not every album is flawless, but every album showcases the greatness of not just Metal Fingers but the many he's worked with. This is by no means a ranking, don't want to downplay any of them in spite of my criticisms, but I recommend the tracks I've listed for newcomers to get a feel of each album.Of course this wasn't every album, but for next year. In the meantime conclusion, MF DOOM is forever the GOAT and may he continue to rest. Thanks for reading.

FATLIP & BLU "LIVE FROM THE END OF THE WORLD" LP
As a member of seminal group The Pharcyde, Fatlip helped expand the boundaries of the 1990s L.A. rap scene, releasing classic albums steeped in eccentric creative excursions. Following in those footsteps, acclaimed emcee Blu has been at the forefront of the independent hip-hop landscape since the late 2000s, narrating the full range of experience in the City of Angels with impressive lyrical ingenuity. These two artists recently linked up for the joint album Live From The End Of The World, a dazzling rhyme whirlwind boasting an overwhelming collection of West Coast talent, including Del The Funky Homosapien, Gift Of Gab, MC Eiht, and Ras Kass, along with members of Jurassic 5, Tha Alkaholiks, Souls Of Mischief, Freestyle Fellowship, and Digital Underground. Featuring production by Madlib, Nottz, Sa-Ra, Knxwledge, and Exile, the album is now available on vinyl for the first time ever. This deluxe physical release includes two previously unreleased bonus tracks featuring Slimkid3 (of The Pharcyde) and Pigeon John.

Morning coffee straight to ink sketch MF DOOM Known by many aliases over the years but always DOOM one of the best to ever pick up the mic. Gone too soon but we have a great catalog of his music for his legacy. I highly recommend his Special Herbs instrumental albums for my artist friends. Put those on and draw! Also anything he did with Czarface is LOADS of fun. I defy anybody who likes hip-hop to deny the power of MADVILLAINY (2004). That's the first album from him and his collaborator Madlib as MADVILLAIN and it's just incredible. Chapter 1 Pt.3/ One song equals a thousand more songs...
Dear Mary Anne,
Now imagine what one album holds, billions & billions of sounds and songs altogether, and that was my mentality. It began in a mysterious effort of trying to truly find myself, was I a writer? rapper or singer. Was I a producer? conductor & so on, I couldn't make up my mind & my brother insisted I produce my own beats, but I was appalled, me make beats? how could it be. I was Rude One or MC Chromes, the crazy rapper, the freestyle jackal, but all in all I decided that maybe I should start cooking my own beats, and so it began, a journey of conducting , listening and understanding, a process that I deeply took serious and also enjoyed at the same time, creating new sounds unheard of and new themes undescribed, I was truly home and blessed to have found such love, my heart and mind exploded into the void of sounds and vibrations, forever capturing my soul undoubtedly.
I was my brother's keeper as the Bible says, writing lyrics to his sounds and it was all I can dream of, I didn't have to make the beats, just continuously write to them and writing I did, I must have written to about 20 or so of my brothers beats and you can listen to some of them on The Unreleased Vols. 1-8, but then came my own time, there I thought, I love all sorts of music regardless of where it comes from or what nationality etc. I just wanted to be part of it all, so I created & conducted, never looking back, day and night, reading books, listening to records and still writing lyrics. I would write & conduct at the same time, the beat wasn't even finished at times so many projects were laid to fade. There was heartbreaks, losses, anger and storms, differences & minds alike but I just continued my adventure, my journey to a path unknown & I didn't understand it, I just kept on creating. I would go on to hold back all of my projects until recently releasing my Unreleased Volumes where I finally showcased some of my works, all of just learning & practicing, growing and loving the world of Hip-Hop & all of it's aspects to producing, recording, sampling (my favorite), Vinyl collecting, and much more. I found my true calling even though I wasn't good at using Fruity Loops, I still had fun and I was basically natural to it, overflowing with streams of music and sounds all from the most inner-depth corners of my mind.
From tragic, sad symphonies, to romantical jazz sounds, I immerged myself into all sorts of instruments and notes, influenced by my brothers beats & also J Dilla, Madlib and rap songs from Charizma, everything was a free for all and I mean I was free to create whatever I wanted, something out of nothing, this was my time to cultivate, and truly remember where I came from and so I reached back into my old childhood days, started to recollect and I couldn't be any happier. I was producing my old childhood songs, some were corny or strange but I was still in love and some were just perfect and confounding, I was mixing & marinating different sounds, creating new flavors. This was a golden time for me I can say, never would I ever enjoy a greater time than me producing in my own little world. Then out of the midst, a thought was born! What of others? What sounds do they have in mind, even so they never thought of making their own beats, my mind went on , thinking & thinking , and so it became that in the end of all my goals, dreams, and life worthy enough to uphold, persuading you was my destiny.

Instrumental hip hop
See also: Breakbeat § Progressive breaks
Instrumental hip hop is hip hop music without vocals. Hip hop as a general rule consists of two elements: an instrumental track (the "beat") and a vocal track (the "rap"). The artist who crafts the beat is the producer (or beatmaker), and the one who crafts the rap is the MC (emcee). In this format, the rap is almost always the primary focus of the song, providing most of the complexity and variation over a fairly repetitive beat. Instrumental hip hop is hip hop music without an emcee rapping. This format gives the producer the flexibility to create more complex, richly detailed and varied instrumentals. Songs of this genre may wander off in different musical directions and explore various subgenres, because the instruments do not have to supply a steady beat for an MC. Although producers have made and released hip hop beats without MCs since hip hop's inception, those records rarely became well-known. Jazz keyboardist/composer Herbie Hancock and bassist/producer Bill Laswell's electro-inspired collaborations are notable exceptions. 1983's Future Shock album and hit single "Rockit" featured turntablist Grand Mixer D.ST, the first use of turntables in jazz fusion, and gave the turntablism and record "scratching" widespread exposure.
The release of DJ Shadow's debut album Endtroducing..... in 1996 saw the beginnings of a movement in instrumental hip hop. Relying mainly on a combination of sampled funk, hip hop and film score, DJ Shadow's innovative sample arrangements influenced many producers and musicians.
In the 2000s and 2010s, artists such as RJD2, J Dilla, Pete Rock, Large Professor, MF DOOM, Danny!, Nujabes, Madlib, Damu the Fudgemunk, Wax Tailor, Denver Kajanga, DJ Krush, Hermitude, Abstract Orchestra, and Blockhead have garnered critical attention with instrumental hip hop albums. Due to the current state of copyright law, most instrumental hip-hop releases are released on small, independent and underground labels. Producers often have difficulty obtaining clearance for the many samples found throughout their work, and labels such as Stones Throw are fraught with legal problems. [citation needed]

Niko IS interview
Writing about NIKO IS @nikohigh , it should be recognized that we are facing one of the most active MCs in the hip hop scene. In last years, he has published several albums and collaborations with remarkable artists, producers and legends of the genree.
Tumblr media
On constant tour with Talib Kweli @talibkweli and his crew of artists, he also takes the time to perform crossovers and go on tour with reggae artist Matisyahu @matisyahu .
His name is Nikolai Paiva. He was born in Rio de Janeiro (Brasil) and lives in the United States. He spent part of her childhood living in Buenos Aires and Bariloche, because her father is argentine. That's why you will find references to our country in his raps (he even names Batistuta @gabrielbatistutaok , the great footballer and legend, on a track).
This interview was carried out in the framework of the tour in Austin (Texas). When the South By Southwest (SXSW) was taken place. It's an event that gathered artists from all over the world, and also a large part of the latino community dispersed all over ther.
Tumblr media
1) How's everything in Austin, Texas?
I LOVE TEXAS. SXSW is special. It’s my 13th year doing it and every year is better. It is a South American dream Come true.
2) What are your feelings about the new project "The Adventures Of The Young Viejos" with Juni Ali ?
I feel that it’s a culmination of my latest travels with Juni Ali and a love letter to RAWKUS records and the golden era of Hip- Hop through my voice.
youtube
3) How did you connect with legends like Sick Jacken & Planet Asia for the album?
I’ve encountered both of the legends from my tour experiences as they are both great friends with Kweli. We recorded both of those songs in the studio together. Plus Sick Jacken co owns a studio in LA called the “Drug Lab” with BLACKSTAR and Kweli’s legendary engineer “Federico CSIK Lopez” who is Colombian and also mixed my album !
4) One of the highlights of the project is "Live from the Blue Note". What do you think of the song and video clip that they published?
I think it’s a tremendous honor to represent the culture at such a prestigious and important jazz venue such as the Blue Note.. also having their blessing was an honor of mine! It was my dedication to the lyricist lounge.
youtube
5) How did you meet Talib Kweli? A global hiphop legend. Do you have more collaborations between the two of you that haven't come out yet?
I’ve answered that question over 88 times lol it’s a great story. You can google it. But he discovered me in Orlando! And we must have over 50 unreleased songs at least! That’s my mentor ! And friend !
6) Will you work with El Bles again?
We are currently mixing the next SOFRITO album which is called “SOFRITO MUNDO” and it’s beautiful. I feel it’s my favorite one so far! Very futuristic yet very Island influenced. El Bles is a salsa sage.  ACHOOO PAPI
7) What do you think of the new albums by Blackstar and Talib Kweli with Madlib?
They are AMAZING. POWERFUL! BEAUTIFUL! Side note, I was supposed to be on LIBERATION 2 but didn’t because of sample clearances. Blame EGON. Shhhh
8) What are your current inspirations?
MYSELF. MY MOTHER. GOD. LIFE. WATER. Atahualpa Yupanqui. Mach Hommy. moodyman. Many others!
9) What do you remember from your past in Bariloche? Would you like to visit Argentina in the future?

A little late on writing about this, but had this just pop up again and had to post a bit on it. Yasiin Bey, formerly Mos Def, is a Top 5 MC of all time. I constantly go back to his solo work and wish he would release some additional solo albums. His work on features in the past years has been top tier—thinking of just the verses he had with the likes of ASAP Rocky and Freddie Gibbs alone.
On “My Favorite Band”, a selection off of Black Star’s “No Fear of Time”, Bey has the spotlight. He offers probably the most worthwhile, uplifting, and poetic rap verse in recent memory. As solid as the album is as a whole, “My Favorite Band” makes me wish we were able to get a Yasiin and Madlib solo effort.
