Hello friend! Just out of complete random curiosity, what would you say are your most favorite fanfic tropes? Please feel free to answer in great detail. 😋
Myarg!!! 🤩 Thank you so much for this ask! It’s made me do some thinking about: a) what actually qualifies as a fanfic trope, and b) which ones I like the most! Here’s what I’ve come up with…so I hope this is what you’re looking for! 😬
“…and they were roommates!” / ‘only one bed’
Sadly, the two-and-of-a-half-thousand fics on AO3 tagged with ‘Sokka/Suki’ have appallingly little Sukka content. 😔 I’ve only come across, like, one Sukka fic ever that uses one of these two, Apartment 3E on FF.net, but I have read fics with this trope some for other ships that were pretty fun. What I like about these tropes—and why I grouped them together—is because awkward, forced-bonding situations usually make for plenty of humor, pining, good-natured conflict, and romantic and/or sexual tension. And don’t all those things work with Sukka perfectly??? 😩 I can just picture them stuck in the same bed (as rivals or obliviously lovesick ‘friends’), and Sokka rolling over on Suki’s side in the middle of the night while blabbering some gibberish in his sleep. She wakes up and shoves him off the edge of the bed, but even on the floor, he’s still out cold—and meanwhile Suki starts to feel guilty, so she gets up and tries to haul him back up onto the bed. But she finds out that Sokka is a lot heavier than she previously thought…and he’s got all these muscles…and this really cute sleeping face…and he’s…oh shit, he’s waking up! 😏
Fake Dating / Under Cover
Just like the last pair, these two tropes aren’t exactly the same, of course, but there’s a similar theme. Whether it’s something as cute and fluffy as ‘hey I need a bf/gf to take home for the holidays so my mom will stop bugging me’ or as angsty and complex as ‘I must infiltrate the palace and earn the trust of the rival prince/princess so I can later betray them,’ there’s always the element of blurring what’s pretend and what’s real—and trying to find out where you started to fall in love along the way. 🥰 The vibes aren’t quite as close to the canon Sukka romance as the two tropes above are, but that’s hardly necessary! There’s a great Sukka fake dating fic by @asajjvxntress that I absolutely love! 🤌
(Here’s a third below the cut that’s not exactly SFW, but these days I have to be careful what I tag/post on tumblr, so it’s gonna be kinda vague 😅)
“Wtf??? Mom and Dad still do it???”
Alright, is this a real fanfic trope? Not really! 😆 I think I’ve seen it a few times before, but it’s the concept behind the first fic I ever posted on AO3, The Councilman’s Mistress, and I absolutely love it. There’s this depressing (and unfounded imo) skepticism among Millennials/Gen Z that marriage begets the death of romance and the beginning of passionless mundanity. 😣 But I refuse to buy into that 🥺 and I adore the idea of my married OTPs keeping things steamy even into their 30s and 40s (at least), especially when that means desperately trying to find time during their busy schedules and away from their kids. Applying this mostly-self-invented ‘trope’ to my OTPs is fun, of course, but tbh, I like it for their parents just as much, if not more! 😜 For ATLA, Kyakoda is my preferred horny-parents-pairing. (And I really like Hakursa, but it’s tough to compete with that SWT momilf/dadilf duo. 🥵) My (hopelessly) massive WIP folder has a fic where Sokka brings Suki home from college to meet his parents, and when he texts his mom that he’s going to arrive a little earlier than expected, she doesn’t answer…because Kya’s phone is in her jeans…and her jeans are crumpled up on the kitchen floor. 😛 It’s one I’m not sure I’ll finish, so I’d definitely consider passing it along to another Sukka writer if they felt inclined to write it themselves. 👀 (I’ve already rambled plenty, but this pseudo-trope opens the door for ‘bonus babies’ conceived when the couple’s older children are already teenagers or young adults…an idea I got from watching Father of the Bride Part II on TV as a little kid and have not forgotten in the past fifteen-or-so years. 😂)

enjoy an extremely long meta analysis on what i think will happen to matthew fairchild in chain of iron (+ chain of thorns)
ETA: the new tungle jungle update killed list formatting so all my bullet points are now below each other instead of having sub points but its Fine, i’m FINE, u just have to read over it i guess, let’s get to it
let’s start out with some reasons why matthew is extremely unlikely to die (spoiler warning for chog and tid!!!)
plot protection! matthew is more plot protected than.. literally anyone imo. the storyline of his secret and his romance with cordelia are two reasons he’s very unlikely to die because there’s too much to be resolved. killing him off would mean leaving those plotlines entirely unresolved.
similarly, matthews deep mental health issues funnily enough protect him from dying. cc never kills off characters who are struggling with themselves. (jessamine is the exception to this, more on that later)
same goes for the fact that matthew is bi- lgbt characters generally don’t die* in cc’s writing. she avoids the kill your gays trope like hell which, tbh, good for us???
not as stong of an argument, but it would make tlh too similar to tid- killing off the herondale’s parabatai who’s also interested in the main girl? yeah. i know cassie recently spoke about how she doesn’t really care for comparisons between tlh and tid, but i feel like this would be pushing it.
but then again, there’s a Lot of reasons why matthew might be dead as hell by the end of coi i’m sorry
most of all, book two madness! shit always goes down in the second book. cassie has also hinted at Shit Going Down in coi, and considering a lightwood already died in chog, i wouldnt be surprised if a main dies
“But Victoria Why On Earth Would That Be Matthew” well! because literally everybody else Cannot die:
it won’t be anna, alastair or thomas bc of said avoidance of kill your gays (And they still need to kiss kiss fall in love); grace, lucie, james and cordelia are simply too important to the plot for cc to kill them; and jesse’s... already dead idk what to tell u
i’m aware this leaves out christopher too, but tbh? i wouldn’t be too surprised if he dies. the only thing saving him rn are that he still has to marry grace if we’re following the family tree and that he has to invent fire messages but....... those are attainable goals for a single book imo (unlike matthew sorting out his Stuff) so... Perhaps it’s gonna be kit but thats a whole nother post
yeah i know i also just listed a bunch of reasons why matthew wont die but bear w me
so why matthew? because, plot-wise, there’s advantages to him dying, that other characters’ deaths wouldn’t have:
it would solve the love triangle. as a fairstairs it pains me to say this but it’s fairly straightforward: matthew dies, the gracelet is destroyed, jordelia lives happily ever after. we know jordelia will probably be endgame, so.. yeah.
on that same note: matthew doesn’t have a love interest besides cordelia. we know we won’t be seeing the tlh characters in another series, so everybody that lives has to get their happily ever after, which in cc’s case means being happily married. if i recall correctly, the only main characters that have ever ended up single at the end of their books were tda characters that we know we will see again in twp.
he isn’t on the family tree. we know for a fact that we can’t trust the family tree, but i think it’s unlikely for cc to just... ignore something as big as that.
but vic, wouldn’t a dead person be on the family tree? good question! that leaves us with our third option: matthew dies, but doesn’t die, aka downworlder/disowned matthew
basically, the whole idea is that matthew either becomes a downworlder and loses contact w the gang, or he gets stripped of his runes/disowned for what he did to charlotte
it would be a way for him to distance himself from the shadowhunters without actually dying- so it would create none of the ethical issues that come w dying (such as kill your gays) but it would distance him from the shadowhunters enough to let jordelia do their funky business.
matthew being stripped of his runes would explain why he isn’t on the family tree too, bc we know shadowhunters that were stripped of their runes aren’t allowed to have contact w their family.
i’ve talked about vampire matthew before but basically: there’s some hints at matthew staying young forever in chog, and him dying but becoming immortal instead would basically be pulling a jessamine. he dies, but doesn’t die.
becoming a vampire would also give us the Drama™ of his death scene, mayhaps some dramatic confessions, plus it would give him literal eternity to sort out his alcoholism/underlying issues (though i think that will be sorted out by the end of cot)
this also fixes the lack of love interest: if he’s immortal, that means we will probably see him again (maybe in twp/tec?) (with a hot vampire bf/gf, of course)
the only argument against this is again, that it would be too similar to tid, which we know cassie might be avoiding.
also perhaps that ppl might see it as as a way to execute the kill your gays trope without actually doing it, but then again, she sent haline to wranger island Just Like That so,,.,. she doesn’t seem to have any problems w that :^)
basically, i have no idea what’s gonna happen to matthew. i think downworlder matthew makes a Lot of sense, but at the same time it’s a bit of reach imo. if anything, i think it might make too much sense. (i had theories for tda that made a lot more sense than giant naked angels but We Got That Too, didn’t we!)
knowing cc’s writing, i think Matthew Suffers, But Somehow Lives is probably the route she will take. i just have no idea how it will be executed.

tl;dr: matthew’s death would be very convenient for some parts of the plot, but it would create a lot of issues with other parts of it. because of this, i think cc might take some sort of dying-but-not-really middle route.
* generally, because there’s a few exceptions: michael is bi but started out dead, which doesn’t count as killing people off imo. the faerie characters that died could be considered lgbt because technically all faeries are bi/pan, but none of the faeries that died ever had a same-sex romance. the aro/ace character that died in tmi is the only one i can think of, but he wasn’t explicitly aro-ace on page until the novellas that followed after tmi. matthew is very explicitly bisexual and has always been very explicitly bisexual.

Grim Reaper
I went today a bit deep in the web to do some research. Maybe the search was worth maybe not, but I had my funXD
I always was interested in the Grim Reapers in the Kuroshitsuji world, because there’s still so much questions unanswered!
We know that they have modern items that aren’t invented yet at that time.
We know all commit suicide, but don’t know why and how.
They all have green eyes and have VERY bad eyesight (you’re not alone here, I feel you>.<)
But is it possible that each death scythe was picked specific for each character? Because I found some very coincidental facts about those within the dream symbolic.
Grell’s chainsaw:
In dreams a chainsaw is most of the time associated with a nightmare. Massacre with lots of blood, or just the tool to saw trees. It also means the dreamer has a need to be separate from something/someone. To work with a chainsaw isn’t easy, but the results will be worth it. On the other hand if the chainsaw is broken the dreamer has chosen the wrong path and won’t be any success in their life. The chainsaw means the dreamer needs to do something in their life to overcome their current awkward position they’re in atm. It can be anything from living conditions to emotional feelings. But the chainsaw can also reflect your gf/bf their doing, the separation with the dreamer. It contains misery too that the dreamer just can’t overcome. Especially if the chainsaw doesn’t work. The dreamer longs for a strict cut. Another interpretation of the chainsaw it is representing a phallus and the sex drive the dreamer express. As a dream symbol in a spiritual meaning the motor points at motivation and need. The dream symbol symbolize love and devotion.
Ronald’s lawnmower
If the dreamer sees themselves working with a mower, it can be that the future of this person is happiness and it brings with their hard work wealth and financial win. With the classical saw the dreamer wants to stands on their own two feet with their own power and energy. Also the dreamer wants to avoid a specific event or part of their life. It also means that the dreamer has a fear of contempt or envy. If the dreamer tries to saw with a dull tool, but can’t cut, then the dreamer can’t get away from a tedious person. If they see a dull saw, they use inappropriate means to go forward i life, that’s why they’re not successful. As rusty or broken saw mean misfortune, but with a rusty saw the possibility is higher that the dreamer gets his wealth back. Loses the dreamer the saw, then they are doing something that will end catastrophic in their life.

But as you can see, there are some similarities between the dream symbolic of the individual death scythe and the characters. ive been meaning to write about this for months. the 100′s reluctance to pair two poc up is extremely fishy at this point and yes, another bullet point in the whole “the 100 is racist” thesis
so first of all is minty, obviously. dont get me wrong. i dont hate briller, i dont even have a problem with them as a ship. the fact that they had to exist, yeah that’s shady.
miller was an extremely minor character in s2. and 90% of the fandom love and attention he got was minty back then. we didnt know anything about their sexualities back then, but they became friends, interacted, and everyone shipped them. everyone.
THAT is where the concept of making miller gay came from. if not for minty, im certain he wouldnt be this main or gay. writers saw how popular the maleslash ship minty was, and decided to make miller gay. it was all fandom.
so its absolutely fucking baffling that when they did confirm he’s gay in the next season, they didnt make minty happen. instead they invented bryan, ~who miller had been dating since the ark days~. and they made monty and harper sleep together.
i mean. i still cannot believe this happened. they were so freaking reluctant to pair two moc up, that they actually went ahead and made one gay, gave him a white bf and the other a white gf.
and the second is braven. i dont say this as a braven shipper, i first thought about this back when i shipped bellarke
bellamy and raven had sex. and the whole of season 1, they interacted a fair amount. their interactions were meaningful af, and anyone could read a bit into it and assume hey, maybe this is a sort of buildup, seems to be leading to something???
and in s2 they had less scenes, in s3 even less, but the ones they did were meaningful. so i dont get why wicken had to happen. or bina. because the whole of s2 bellamy had zero love interests, and raven had the whole wick thing that would have gone on for longer if the racist actor wasnt fired. so i guess im just wondering why does the 100 keep bringing in COMPLETELY NEW (white) characters for their poc to date when the time comes? when the characters already have established healthy and meaningful and strong relationships with other characters (also of color)?
the third would be indra and kane, because after s1 of kabby being enemies and s2 where he had her whipped i didnt think there would be a chance for them, and it really did seem like indra and kane would happen, but here we are. kabby is canon and indra has 0 love interests.
its a pattern now. it’s happening again and again, and it just gets shadier and shadier.

Aeneid, aka bad fanfiction of the illiad/oddessy
Turns out I wrote an abridged version of the Aeneid after a few glasses of gin and forgot about it so here it is because why not.
Aeneas.
The bridge of Classical Mythology between Greek and Roman. Son of the Goddess Venus and Trojan prince Anchises. He fought in the trojan was and got his butt kicked and rescued by his mother after Diomedes grabbed him by the leg and used Aeneas as a weapon to beat half an army to death and Neptune saved him by breaking character to save him from one of Achilles drive by beat-downs despite him being a minnor character at this point. This is some less than subtle foreshadowing.
During the sack of Troy at the end of the legendary Trojan War, Aeneas was commanded by the Gods to leg it alongside his dad, his wife (who then died) and a buncha fanboys called the Aeneads. However he is plagued by Hera. I mean Juno - the roman rebranded version of Hera. In fact most roman gods and heroes were of Greek invention but given a new colour palette and name. ORIGINAL CHARACTER! DO NOT STEAL!!1! Basically if mythos was deviantart. Why is Juno even angry ad Aeneas, he aint don nothing wrong. shes just the go-to villain to screw over demigods for some reason.
anyway
Aeneas gets a fleet of ships because his mum gave them to him (a common theme that aint gonna stop soon so buckle down) and after a booze cruise to Thrace is told to go to Italy (where a lot of people from the Trojan war went to) as he is prophesised to become a great king. so off they go but Juno causes a storm for literally no reason to they crash at this island where they see a giant table with a ton of food so they eat it and a few harpies say
"One day you'll get so hungry you will eat your table!"
So they're like "Cool, whateves" and got lost and land in Buthrotum (how do you pronouce that?) and they're brought as prisoners to the rulers Helenus and Andromache. See Buttwhatever is a Greek city but has been taken over by trojans. but Aeneas is a trojan so why???
Plot holes aside, Helenus says if they go the short way, they'll die like super brutal to scylla and charybdis who are like the worlds greatest tag team wrestling team if WWE included murder. So they start the long ways around and one of Odysseus's men I mean Ulysses. DEFINETLY NOT ODYSSEUS.
ULYSSES IS AN OC. Nah screw it, he's just a renamed Odysseus. And this guy helps them away from this Cyclops that Odysseus just stabbed in the eye.
Then Juno asks Poseidon I mean Neptune to have them crash as Aeneas is supposed to destroy Carthage (Junos fav city) bu they crash in Carthage. Maybe Neptune was drunk.
So they Queen of Carthage, Dido (no not the singer) sees the crew get slam dunked on her shores and Venus forces her to become his Overly Attached Girlfriend because the Gods have no fucking idea of consent in a relationship. So these two are at it but Venus is like:
"Son, you know I just got you a super hot GF who I made to be always wanting it but you gotta go so you can be a king."
So Aeneas leave in the middle of the night. Dido is distraught as she was forced to love this due who bailed so she lit the entire city on fire and stabbed herself. In some versions she still survived for a few days. Holy shit she's hardcore.
So Aeneas dad dies and they celebrate I mean comisterete I mean HONOUR his memory by partying all day and night non-stop for a week. They party so hard they wake the dead guy up and he joins the party, gets wasted and says "VISIT ME IN HADES MA BOI" then dies again from alcohol poisoning.
So to procrastinate actually doing his job, Aeneas decides to go to hell. Relatable - I've been in retail and hell is preferable. so on his way to hell he meets Dido cause she died. Remember? I dont. well I say "Meet", meet as in when you see your boss/teacher/colleague you don't like in a shop so literally dive into the next isle. So he meets his dad and the dude gice him a nine hour lecture about how good Romulus is, how great Rome will be and how FUCKING AWESOME his decendent GAIUS JULIUS CAESAR will be. Because he apparently couldn’t do it alive.
so he climbs out of hell.
wait how did he even get in there anyways? what could this nerd do to go to hell? be bad to workers on black friday?
so he climbs out of hell. all his men are hangry (a new emotion I have invented that is a combonation of hungry and angry) so they end up eating their breadtables. BOOM! OMINOUS PROPHECY FROM EARLIER FULFILLED WITH SIGNIFICANTLY LESS PAIN THAN PREVIOUSLY THOUGHT.
So they hit up the natives (the latins) and Aeneas is like. "Dude, I know this is your crib and we are basically a bunch of murderhobos with giant superiority complexes but hows about you let me move in and marry your daughter."
Then Juno returns to Ruin Everything and starts a war between these otherwise nice people.
So the kings BF who the princess was engaged to (Turnias) is psyched for this while Aeneas legs it because he has realised he has never actually won a single fight by himself because his mum has always showed up at some point to save his sorry ass so Venus saves the day (again) by hitting up her husband to make Aeneas a ton of legendary game-breaking weaponry despite the fact he's only a level 2 paladin.
So after schenanigans happen, Aeneas friend died who he was supposed to protect died and deciding to shamelessly rip off the moment from Achilles and Patroclus becomes a meatgrinder of death. Suddenly some of that sweet Grimdark Angst has made this loser competant.
So this turnip guy legs it and this significantly smarter and better woman called Camilla shows up and kills most of Aeneas' fanbase so he sends a dude to assassinate her while she's distracted by something shiny. because feminism hasn't been invented yet. Turns out this was a super smart move as she was the Goddess Diane's adopted daughter and she super-smites the assassin dude.
Then a whole lot more murder happens than I can physically talk about where a bunch of siginificantly more cool and interesting people die until it is the Super Final Shoenun Showdown between Aeneas and Turnip. Turnip dies.
So that happened. Aeneas and the princess are basically King and Queen of a literal mountain of corpses.
Thus ends the worlds worst continuation fic & state sponsored plagiarised propaganda.

The Hayway Family
Bethany and her siblings all grew up in riverreview, and just graduated from high school, went to prom then they decided it was time for a new start , to live
they all move to new world, and they all will go to college together, bethany will be a anime artist, her others siblings will be a inventer,writer and hunt as a pack.
they all will have someone special in there life. through out the years the hayways family were some kind poor but they work there way up to there jobs. they almost own the town, they were semi wealth, then the wayways family decided to move out then let there kids be the next generation after all its all about them , lets see how well they will go in life.
they hope they all will pass college have higher pays in there jobs at home. they all went to college just got home, went back to another semster of college, but lugi the vampire got arrested cause he was at the grocery store, so i had to reset him back to the family so that way he’ll do his major, offortnually he kinda miss his class when he went jail so he made a c in college but when he went back to college he pull it to a B. his bro’ and sister mad a A in college. so lugi hopes to pull his B to a A.
When they went back home, max decided it was time for him and his boo to move cause she wants to have kids, at that moment, he ask her to go steady with him and she was so excited that she was jumping up and down, then he ask her to married her, then they had a private wedding, then i move them out into a futurist house right by the hospital so that way if they have a family together all they have to do is walk to to the hospital to have a child. eventually max will upgrade his home and maybe adopt a cat since his a were wolf. his aspiration wish is hunt as a pack and his wife name is Paula and she wants to be sourounded by family so that means they’re will have kids later on.
As for Bethany and Lugi and Grace, they’re at home now, just got back home from college. Bethany and her bf are really cute together, they both love art, and Lugi and his vampire lover are the same except, his a writer and his lover is a business woman but her aspiration wish is master their, and grace bf wants to be hit movie composer and grace bf wants to be and bethany bf wants to be a home design hotspot but im not sure if i want him to be that cause he has to go with him to do his job, so i might have to change his aspiration wish to be a painter since his gf is a inventer. and bethany is a anime artist like i said.
list of things to complishment :
go on vacation, have a futurist home, create a robot, adopt a cat, have two dna babies, go to future, get married, edit town, do aspiration wish. go on dates, have a gift given party and have parties. il add more to the list later.
when Eddy,Sophie,Mugsy come back home they will eventually get married to there lover’s then start doing there job’s. Eventually since I’ll be edit max house before I play Eddy,Sophie,Mugsy.
