Hooray WIP introduction
Shirleston Academy of Mystery and Intrigue
“Everyone in that place is stuck in endless dreams and living nightmares, all while it watches.”
Takes place in a private school in Portland, Oregon where three students are wrapped in an ever-growing mystery surrounding the history of their esteemed school. Its inspirations are The Magnus Archives and K-12 by Melanie Martinez (and my own shitty experiences with private schools but this isn’t a vent post). It’s a cosmic horror mystery with hints of dark academia. Students at Shirleston are ranked by the color of their ties. Freshman have blue, Sophomore have yellow, Juniors have Red, and Seniors have green. (If I see a hogwarts joke I’m deleting this blog)
Our characters:
Ashley Yuan: 18, A senior at Shirleston Academy and trying to get the hell out of there as soon as possible. She is generally snarky but clever. She also has OCD and is demi-sexual. She’s been living on her own for about a month after her aging mother passed. She gets wrapped up in this mess of a mystery after discovering a fellow student burned alive in a ritual circle in the library. She pieces the school’s mysterious history alongside…
Erin Reyes: 15, the youngest one of the protagonists. He’s quiet but very blunt and honest when he does talk, and is internally screaming 24/7. He has been homeschooled for most of his life due to severe bullying until his father put him in Shirleston. He is autistic and is having a bit of an identity crisis due to his slow and painful process of unmasking after years. Hes terrified of Shirleston not just because he has to talk to people frequently, but also because there’s just something so off about the place. This only gets worse when he’s roped into the plot. He’s also pan but extremely closeted.
James Lyon: 17 and a junior. He’s playful, energetic, kinda stupid, but means well for the most part. His dad is the CEO of Glacé, a banking company and a major investor in Shirleston. He likes being at shirleston due to how horribly his parents treat him, it’s sort of an escape for him. So that obviously goes to shit when a friend of his ends up dead in the library. Now he doesn’t feel safe anywhere, but finds at least a little comfort in his new friends. He’s gay, but like Erin, he’s extremely closeted.
There’s body horror, found family I guess??? Chase scenes, dream symbolism, body horror monsters, the works.

give me a character and i'll give you 10+ headcannons: henry westbrook.
Tumblr media

#12 Cal Downs #14 Long Beach State, #18 Pepperdine
Bears Win Fifth Straight in Three Days
MALIBU - The No. 12 California beach volleyball team ended a three-day stretch of matches with a pair of 3-2 wins over No. 14 Long Beach State and No. 18 Pepperdine Monday afternoon. The Golden Bears have now won five straight matches and three against ranked opponents.
No. 12 Cal 3, No. 14 Long Beach State 2
Cal began its morning in Malibu with a battle with The Beach. The team captain pair of senior Ainsley Radell and fifth-year Ashley Delgado got the Bears on the board first with a 21-19, 21-16 win on court two. It was the sixth-straight win for the pair.
Sophomore Alex Young-Gomez and senior Lexi McKeown were the next to strike with a gritty win on court four to give the Bears a 2-0 advantage. The pair took the first set 21-17, but The Beach answered with a spirited 22-20 win in set two to force a third. The tiebreaker would also go to extra points with Bears coming out on top 19-17.
LBSU took the match on court five to stay alive, but Cal found the clincher on court one with junior Maya Gessner and sophomore Ella Dreibholz earning a three-set win of their own. After splitting the first two frames 21-19, 16-21, the duo dominated the third 15-7 to seal Cal's fourth-straight win.
1. Maya Gessner/Ella Dreibholz (Cal) def. Mari Molina/Christine Deroos (LBSU) - 21-19, 16-21, 15-7
2. Ainsley Radell/Ashley Delgado (Cal) def. Sydney Stevens/Julia Westby (LBSU) - 21-19, 21-16
3. Malia Gementera/Taylor Hagenah (LBSU) def. Sierra Caffo/Liz Waters-Leiga (Cal) - 13-21, 21-16, 15-12
4. Alex Young-Gomez/Lexi Mckeown (Cal) def. Haley Carrington/Holly Jackson (LBSU) - 21-17, 20-22, 19-17
5. Maggie Walters/Natalie Glenn (LBSU) def. Brooke Buchner/Natalie Martin (Cal) - 21-16, 21-19
Exh. Ava Mann/Gia Fisher (Cal) def. Kate Stoughtong/Savannah Lyons (LBSU) - 21-16, 21-18
Order of finish: 2, 4, 5, 1*, 3
                                  No. 12 Cal 3, No. 18 Pepperdine 2
The battle with the host Waves came down to the final match, but once again the Bears got on the board first with McKeown and Young-Gomez earning their fourth-straight sweep on court four 25-23, 21-15.
Pepperdine responded with an impressive win on two where all three sets went to extras. A straight-set win on five gave the Waves a 2-1 lead, putting the Bears in a must-win situation on courts one and three.
After losing its first match of the season earlier in the day, the court three team of junior Liz Waters-Leiga and sophomore Sierra Caffo bounced back with a clutch 21-13, 21-19 victory to keep its team alive. The fans in attendance would get what every beach fan hopes for – a decider on court one.
Gessner and Dreibholz traded punches with the Waves' McKenna Thomas and Lexi McLeod early in the first set but went on a late run to take it 21-15. The second set was a similar story as the Bears led 20-16, but the Pepperdine pair refused to quit and staved off three-straight match points to make it a one-point contest at 20-19. The fourth match-point would go the Bears' way as Gessner and Dreibholz sealed the team's fifth-straight win.
1. Maya Gessner/Ella Dreibholz (Cal) def. McKenna Thomas/Lexi Mcleod (PEPP) - 21-15, 21-19
2. Savannah Standage/Kate Clermont (PEPP) def. Ainsley Radell/Ashley Delgado (Cal) - 23-25, 24-22, 16-14
3. Sierra Caffo/Liz Waters-Leiga (Cal) def. Jasmin Suarez/Gracie Pedersen (PEPP) - 21-13, 21-19
4. Lexi McKeown/Alex Young-Gomez (Cal) def. Gracey Campbell/Gabbie Perez (PEPP) - 25-23, 21-15
5. Jordan Benoit/Juju Quintero (PEPP) def. Natalie Martin/Brooke Buchner (Cal) - 21-16, 21-18
6 (Exh.) Ava Mann/Portia Sherman (Cal) def. Chase Curry/Emi Erickson (PEPP) - 21-18, 21-14
Order of finish: 4, 2, 5, 3, 1*
Up Next:  Cal is back on the road this weekend at Hawai'i's Heineken Kings Cup, a three-day event that begins on Friday. There the team will face Nebraska, Washington, Texas, Oregon, and the host Rainbow Wahine.

Meeting Author William S. Lyon
Tumblr media
While visiting my family in Kansas for the holidays in 1991, a friend of mine introduced me to William S. Lyon, the co-author of Black Elk: The Sacred Ways of a Lakota. We met Lyon at his home in Lawrence, Kansas. Lyon received his Ph.D. in anthropology in 1970 and has spent his career in the study of North American Indian shamanism, mainly among the Lakota. He first met Wallace Black Elk, a renowned Lakota medicine man, in 1978 when they jointly conducted a summer session course at Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon. In 1986, Lyon left academia to spend full time traveling in the U.S. and Europe with Wallace Black Elk and Archie Fire Lame Deer. Over the next four years, Lyon taped the many talks given by Black Elk that resulted in the 1991 publication of Black Elk: The Sacred Ways of a Lakota. This highly-acclaimed book is entirely in the words of Black Elk.
Lyon had some great stories to share about his travels with Wallace. On one occasion, Lyon accompanied Wallace to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. They walked out into an isolated area far from habitation to attend a sweat lodge ceremony. Hanging in a tree near the sweat lodge was Chief Crazy Horse's sacred pipe or Chanunpa. Lyon asked Wallace if he was concerned about someone stealing the pipe. Wallace answered, "No one will ever take that pipe. One time we came out here to sweat and the pipe was gone. We went into the lodge and asked the spirits to return the pipe, and sure enough when we came out of the sweat, that pipe was hanging in the tree."
Wallace told Lyon that when Mount St. Helens erupted in 1980, a lava tube opened beneath the mountain and a column of lava is now flowing from Mount St. Helens all around the Pacific Rim or Ring of Fire. The Ring of Fire is an area where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur in the basin of the Pacific Ocean. Wallace said that this is a sign that the Earth Changes have begun. The phrase "Earth Changes" refers to the Indigenous belief that the world would soon enter a series of cataclysmic events causing major alterations in human life on the planet. This includes natural events, such as major earthquakes, the melting of the polar ice caps, a pole shift of the planetary axis, major weather events, solar flares as well as huge changes of the global social, economic and political systems.
Lyon also recounted the story of Wallace's silver eagle pendant being stolen from the altar at a sweat lodge ceremony in Ashland, Oregon. Just as he did at Pine Ridge, Wallace went into the lodge and asked the spirits to return the pendant. When he came out of the lodge, the pendant was back on the altar. Lyon was convinced that Wallace was one of the most powerful shamans in the United States. Wallace passed away on January 25, 2004 at his home in Denver, Colorado.

give me something that will haunt me (when you're not around)
All good love stories start in the rain.
But they also start like this: in 1987, the son of two school teachers sells a software company and buys a second tier team on the verge of relegation and struggling with bankruptcy. We will work things out, Jean-Michel Aulas promises the Board of Directors, but I am going to want some things in return. On that list: promotion to the upper division, a change of ethics, and the creation of an academy center.
They start in 2004, when Aulas insists on the purchase of FC Lyon to create a women's team. Again he sits the Board of Directors down. They already know how this conversation will go, since Aulas gets what he wants most of the time. Here's the thing, he tells them, I want to build the best women's team in the world. I think there's money to be made there.
They start in 2006, when Wendie Renard enters their life through the formation of their youth academy. They start in 2007, when Amandine Henry catches Olympique Lyonnais' eye and the word fate starts getting thrown around. They start in 2008, when Selma Bacha shows up at their academy's doorstep. They start in May 2010, when a young team makes it to their first UWCL final only to lose one penalties. The player who missed? Amandine Henry. There's another love story in 2010, with a blue-eyed player named Eugenie Le Sommer. They start in 2014, too, when a tall 18-year-old Norwegian player walks into their lives.
Love stories have a lot of beginnings, is what I am trying to say. But even if you take away their starting point the fundamental moral of the story stays the same: at some point, love meant enough to someone to leave an impression.
That impression can be a lot of things: it's an owner with a specific set of values; it's a captain and a Norwegian goalscorer with the same fundamental desire to do right by a club they love so much; it's growing up with a club; it's a club and a player throwing around terms like predestined and fate because, well, sometimes you just know.
This love story? It started with a loss in April 2021. It started with a captain scoring the own goal which would knock her team out of the Champions League and end their run of five consecutive wins. It started with a team ended up being trophy less for the first time since 2006. It started in July 2021, in a hot board meeting room in Lyon, when a team declared through clenched teeth that they wanted their throne back.
It started in August 2021, in Portland, Oregon, when a vexed Lyon found themselves shifting a little in discomfort at the thought of having reformed. It started in November 2021, with a 6-1 win against Paris Saint-Germain, with Lyon believing in themselves again. It started with an injury crisis and Lyon having to come to terms with a new identity. It started in Turin with a red card and it started in Lyon and it started in Paris.
It started in Turin, again, with a player who knows what love stories are like better than anyone. It started with a player who came back from the dead and resurrected the club at the same time. It started with a player, born in Lyon, who embodies the club's DNA.
It started like this: a post match interview and a player, blinking back tears as she looked towards the group, saying I just love this team so much. There aren't words for it... I don't know how I make it up to them. They're just something else.
It goes something like this: all good love stories start in the rain.

John Fulton Reynolds was born on September 20, 1820, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He was one of eleven children. In 1837, he was nominated to the United States Military Academy at West Point by future President James Buchanan, a friend of Reynolds’s father. Reynolds graduated in 1841, finishing 26th in a class of 50. His classmates included future Civil War generals Horatio Wright, Richard Garnett, Don Carolos Buell, Israel Richardson, and Nathaniel Lyon.
After his graduation, Reynolds was commissioned 2nd lieutenant in the 3rd United States Artillery, stationed at Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland. Over the next four years he would also serve at Fort Pickens and Fort Marion in Florida and at Fort Moultrie in Charleston, South Carolina. During the Mexican War, Reynolds, by then a 1st lieutenant, served under General Zachary Taylor. He was brevetted twice for gallantry. At the Battle of Buena Vista, his artillery stopped a flanking attack by enemy cavalry, forcing the Mexican army to withdraw.
After the Mexican War, Reynolds served at various posts, including Fort Preble in Maine, Fort Lafayette in New York, and Fort Ortford in Oregon. During this period, he became engaged to Catherine Mary Hewitt. Because she was a Catholic and he was a Protestant, however, Reynolds kept their engagement a secret. From September 1860 to June 1861, he was the Commandant of Cadets at West Point, where he also served as an instructor.
During the Seven Days Campaign, he commanded his brigade at the Battles of Beaver Dam Creek and Gaines’ Mill. After the latter, an exhausted Reynolds was captured while attempting to get some sleep. An embarrassed Reynolds was comforted by his pre-war colleague, Confederate General D.H. Hill, who told him “do not feel so bad about your capture, it’s the fate of wars.”
Reynolds did not remain a prisoner for long; just weeks later he was exchanged and put in command of the entire division of Pennsylvania Reserves. At the Battle of Second Manassas, Reynolds led a rear guard counterattack that bought time for the Union Army to escape potential annihilation. He was unable to participate in the Battle of Antietam because a panicky Pennsylvania Governor Andrew Curtin demanded that he command local militia forces during Lee’s invasion.
Reynolds once again commanded his division at Fredericksburg. After Fredericksburg, when General Joseph Hooker was given command of the Army of the Potomac, Reynolds was given command of Hooker’s old First Corps. After the Battle of Chancellorsville, Reynolds was one of several Union Generals who urged Hooker’s removal from command. However, when President Lincoln met with Reynolds and offered him command of the Army of the Potomac, Reynolds replied that he would only accept the command if he could be sure there would be no interference from his superiors in Washington. Unwilling to sacrifice civilian control of the military, Lincoln instead put Reynolds's friend General George Meade in command.
On the morning of July 1, 1863, as he was leading his forces towards Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, Reynolds received a message that Confederate forces were almost there as well. Reynolds led his First Corps to McPherson Ridge, when he received a bullet through the neck. Reynolds died instantly. He was the highest ranking soldier on either side killed at Gettysburg.

FLP ESSAYS BOOK OF THE DAY: Searching for Home: Misadventures with Misanthropes by Stephen J. Lyons
ADVANCE ORDER:
https://www.finishinglinepress.com/product/searching-for-home-misadventures-with-misanthropes-by-stephen-j-lyons/
Searching for A Way Home is an off-the-road exploration of #American #life and #family history. Veteran essayist and journalist Stephen J. Lyonstakes readers to the fringes of society through his own experiences, whether sampling the exploits of an Elvis imitator in Florida, partying with a rowdy cowboy in Colorado, slacking with old-timers in an Oregon hotel, failing at farming in the Midwest, dodging his demons as a boy in Chicago, or simply contemplating his permanent liminal space in a Wal-Mart parking lot. Self-effacing, reflective, and universal in approach, this award-winning author also shows the beauty in his mother’s last days, and how a drifter and a dreamer finally found a home in the least expected place.
Stephen J. Lyons is the author of five books of essays and journalism: “Landscape of the Heart: Writings on Daughters and Journeys,” “A View from the Inland Northwest,” “The 1,000-Year Flood: Destruction, Loss, Rescue, and Redemption along the Mississippi River,” “Going Driftless: Life Lessons from the Heartland for Unraveling Times,” and “West of East (Finishing Line Press).
Praise for Landscape of the Heart
“Stephen Lyons has offered us his grace and compassion through Landscape of the Heart. These essays are the deliberations of a sensitive, intuitive mind, a mind not afraid of exploring regions of the heart, so often sidestepped by men. Through his observations we are challenged and inspired to look more deeply at the world around us. Mr. Lyons’ prose reads like poetry and the effect of a lingering memory of love.”
–Terry Tempest Williams
“Stephen J. Lyons writes passionately and eloquently about coming of age, as we must, again and again. He understands the uses of love. His is good work.”
–William Kittredge
Praise for A View from the Inland Northwest
“The landscape of the interior west is so magnificent that it usually dwarfs all other impressions. But Stephen Lyons is a fine writer, a fine observer, and a fine neighbor–this book carries the stamp of authenticity on every page and will engage both visitor and resident of the region.”
–Bill McKibben
Praise for The 1000-Year Flood
“The strength of this book is its narrative, which preserves the voices of the people directly involved in the floods and their immediate aftermath.”
–Annals of Iowa
A “gripping, nuanced account…Lyons is a gifted reporter.”
–Minneapolis Star Tribune
Praise for Going Driftless
“Lyons has written a book of people and their place: of the outsized characters who seek sanctuary in the region’s hills. In particular, he’s interested in the idealists–with their small-scale farms, co-ops and intentional communities–who have gravitated to the Driftless since the 1970s…’Going Driftless’ is anything but driftless. These character profiles anchor the book. It is grounded and earthy, inspired by the way a place nurtures us.”

A Very Abridged History Of Political Legal Trouble
A grand jury in Manhattan has voted to indicate former President Trump this Thursday, an unquestionably historical affair. The concept of a president facing legal danger displays a shift in the precedent surrounding the criminality of the head of the Executive Branch. To many, this showcases an apparent change ahead in US politics. There is no way to know what the future will entail regarding this case, but we can look at previous political crimes. It's necessary to note that Donald Trump is the first President to be formally indicted but not the first politician to face criminal charges. This essay details the story of several of these politicians and the gentle fall to corruption many of these politicians have encountered as a result of their political careers. Some of these politicians haven’t touched corruption. Some even have charges that have nothing to do with their political careers. Still, it is crucial to be aware of these figures to understand the current situation regarding the Indicate of the former President.
One of the foremost known politicians to get indicted for his crimes was Matthew Lyon, an Irish-born Representative representing the State of Kentucky. Lyon represented the Democratic-Republican party, staying in line with the political party's Southern roots with a resounding opposition to big government. Matthew Lyon prided himself on these values and acquired a profound resentment for the Federalists, whom he believed had pro-British sympathies. The introduction of the Alien and Sedition Acts created further tensions between these two groups due to the Acts allowing the government to have immense control over its people. These Acts were backed by the Federalists including the most influential Federalist, President Adams. Lyon detested these acts and considered these acts as oppressive and authoritative. He would write several letters decrying Adams's actions and expressing his beliefs against these acts. These efforts would go directly against the Acts that Lyons was opposing, leading him to get arrested on treason charges. Lyon harbored a prior history of acting out against Federalists, a notable incident occurring when Lyons spat on a fellow Representative (Roger Griswold) during a debate about whether or not to remove William Blount from the House due to suspected treason. Despite being in Jail, Representative Lyons gained further support and won the following election in a landslide. Under President Jefferson's administration, these acts would expire, and those affected by these Acts would be pardoned or refunded depending on their punishment. This example portrays an individual who chose to speak out against a government that had overreached its powers and paid the price. This would not become the standard as the country propelled onward with its history.
The introduction of deep corruption with actual arrests began around the Presidency of Theodore Roosevelt, having politicians with much more drastic offenses that didn’t just correlate to insignificant forgery and bribes. These criminalities would progressively get more extreme, and a prominent example of the variety of Land Grant frauds from Senator Mitchel, who allowed land grants in the State of Oregon to be illegally obtained with his help. While Senator Mitchel is not the only Senator who was involved in this, he was the one who took much of the fall during the trial as a high-profile Senator from the State of Oregon. These crimes display an essence of corruption that had been festering, and the opportunity to make money felt like an ok exchange for morality. This wouldn’t change, William Lorimer was known as the “blond boss of Chicago” and worked in the House during the Taft Administration. He was arrested for accepting bribes ($1,000 in 1910 an estimated $31,667.37 today) for a vote for a Senator. Lorimer was never arrested but was expelled from the House, but this did set a precedent surrounding the corruption seen with indirect voting for Senators. These acts led to the passage of the Seventeenth Amendment, allowing Citizens to vote directly for their Senators. Many Presidential administrations would become known for their rings of corruption, President Grant would be known for his corruption in his cabinet, and Truman’s administration also faced a variety of accusations of deep corruption. This corruption wouldn’t stop and arguably hasn’t. Upon looking at a list of all the corruption seen in government, it becomes clear that the arrests get progressively more frequent around the Nixon administration. While actions have been taken to contain criminality, corruption breeds in the beds of power. This corruption was seen in the pursuit of power, and is obviously because of the closest we’ve gotten to a presidential indictment before this moment- The Watergate Scandal.
The Watergate Scandal displays a turning point in what is allowed and what will be prosecuted. What will be shamed? Those indicted for the actions of Watergate include John N. Mitchell, Egil Krogh, Richard Kleindienst, Dwight Chapin, H. R. Haldeman, John Ehrlichman, and a variety of others who committed a medley of offenses. Of these crimes, perjury, and obstruction of justice were the most considerable offenses levied towards the charged; ranging from some being forced to step down to some serving time. A notable absence is of course the lack of President Nixon. Nixon was not involved in a variety of offenses despite playing a pivotal role, many people theorized this is because ‘the president is above the law’, the truth of that is debatable, but Nixon's political career was over. Nixon's life after resignation had immediately taken a drastically negative turn as he almost immediately fell ill with severe phlebitis that needed to be operated on, only to be in shock due to internal bleeding after the events of this surgery. After recovery Nixon's financial situation had only gotten worse as his assets were slowly seeping away. Nixon had also been disbarred and had to rely on reforming his image over the next twenty years of his life to make and maintain any type of money. At the end of his life, Nixon reached a different level of appreciation as the consequences of Watergate felt much more minimal during the Clinton administration. Still, much of the public knowledge of Nixon almost thirty years post-mortem came from his contributions to Watergate and this distinct absence of any criminal charges for him.
This brings us to the recent charges brought against Donald Trump. As the first president, we are treading on untreated territory, even having questions on whether or not it would be ok to handcuff the former president. Hopefully, this historical analysis gives a bit more of an understanding of the conditions we are currently seeing, and the importance of the following weeks.
***Thank you so much for reading if you got this far! Please let me know if you enjoyed it and let me know if there is anything I should change. I hope for this to be a weekly series depending on the amount of work I have for each week. ***
