#Lugansk
My fellow Americans seem to forget that the United States illegally overthrew the Kingdom of Hawaii, threw the Queen in jail, annexed the land, and gave the Native Hawaiians the same treatment that was done with the Native American tribes. Today, they are complaining about Vladimir Putin, and thought every region in the ex-Soviet countries was going to be okay being disconnected from the Russian mainland. He doesn't suppress the Ukrainian or Georgian language. His country isn't the one with the most military bases around the world. He prefers a multi-polar world unlike the uniparty that exists in the United States of America.

Turkish revolutionary musical group Grup Yorum reports from Donbass:
"After Donetsk and Lugansk declared independence, rocket fire by imperialist-backed neo-Nazi gangs and the Ukrainian army directed directly at the residents of these regions has never ceased.
"From 2014 to 2022, about 14,000 ordinary people were killed.
"We support the people of Donbass, who are resisting the imperialism of the US and EU and its accomplice, the fascist Ukrainian state."

In April 2014, during a hot phase of the war, the Kyiv International Sociology Institute surveyed the public opinion among the citizens of the eastern regions of Ukraine. The results showed chaos in their heads and a rise in anti-Ukrainian sentiments, but still, the majority was pro remaining within Ukraine. The situation was objectively difficult, but not hopeless.
According to the results of the survey, 70% of citizens of Donbas considered the temporary government of Yatsenyuk and Turchynov illegitimate, but also 60% considered Yanukovych to be illegitimate. 65% considered Maydan to be a western coup, 45% believed that Yanukovych should have used violence against the rioters, and 35% were against this scenario.
43% blamed Yanukovych and his party for the murders of the protesters, and 48% blamed the opposition. 55% believed the police had no right to use violence against the protestors. Here is a paradox: 60% believed that Pravy Sektor was a "myth" and a "marginal group" that had no real power and should be demilitarized, but approximately the same amount of people believed that Pravy Sektor controls the government.
All those statements are so contradictory their co-existence can only be explained by the influence of russian propaganda.
Besides, nowhere in the regions could you find aggressive anti-Ukrainians beliefs. Only 10-15% supported the seizure of administrative buildings, and about the same percentage of people were neutral on this. But 72% in the Donetsk region and 59% in the Lugansk region disapproved of it. About half of the people believed it to be inexcusable, and about a third justified it by the precedents in other Ukrainian regions. A quarter believed it to be "the last chance to be heard by the central government".
What were these people afraid of?
Most of all people were afraid of the economy crashing (43%), breaking economical contact with russia (36%), and the rise of criminal activity (50% in the Donetsk region and 30% in the Lugansk region). Other worries - loss of pensions, nationalism and radicalism, and potential civil war worried about 27-29% each. The risk of civil war specifically worried about 40% of people in the Donetsk region. It should be noted that NATO membership, loss of russian TV, singular official language and potential visa regime with russia concerned almost nobody - only 7-10% of citizens noted these topics among the list of their worries.
The sociologists also asked directly about the separation of the eastern regions and their union with russia. Around 30% were fully or partially supportive of the idea, while the majority - over 50% - wanted to remain in Ukraine. Among 10% wanted russia to send their troops. In the middle of an active war with russia, 55% believed that there is no war and about the same percentage expected a civil war to come.
Practically no one was eager to fight either. 55% were ready to pick up arms only for self-defence, and 30% were against any fighting in any circumstances. Only 6% were willing to go to war with the "Kyiv junta". About 20% expected military help from russia, and 55% were against it.
This research was done in April, just after the takeover of the SBU building in Lugansk and Igor Girkin's russian mercenaries appearing in Slovyansk. By the end of the month they cut off Ukrainian tv, and the only information remaining for the people was russian propaganda. The main sources of info for the majority of the population were russian social networks "Odnoklassniki" and "VKontakte" (controlled by the FSB - transl. note), and russsian state TV.
The research done by the KISI is probably the most reliable we will ever have. Even if you consider the potential percentage of people who might have been afraid to talk about separatism honestly, there still is no ground for talks about the "overwhelming separatism of the Donbas region". Even the leaders of the separatists themselves would later admit it, accusing them of being too passive, not loving russia enough and not supporting the militia.

UN alarmed by Russia’s ‘mass’ issuance of passports in Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk and Lugansk regions
United Nations officials on Monday expressed deep concern over Moscow’s “mass conferral” of Russian passports in Ukrainian-controlled territory and denial of basic services to those who refuse them.
The UN human rights office, OHCHR, has stated that residents without Russian citizenship will not have access to some state services. UN deputy human rights chief Nada Al-Nashif told the Human Rights Council in a debate on OHCHR’s latest report on rights in Ukraine:
In Russian-controlled territory we have observed with deep concern a policy of mass conferral of Russian citizenship on residents. Individuals who opt not to accept Russian passports will not have an access to essential public services such as social security and healthcare.

Sedert Luhansk, Donetsk, Cherson en Zaporozhye streke by referendum aangesluit.

Post from Donetsk today, about the killing of children in the U.S.-Ukraine war on Donbass. We protested for justice for Vladik and other child victims here in New York and around the world:
Remember the boy, whose name was Vladik Dmitriev. He was four years old when a grenade dropped from a Ukrainian drone tore him apart [in early 2021 -- one year before Russia's military intervention]. Then I had to "persuade" the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) mission for a long time to go to the place where the child died. They arrived a week later (I have kept all the correspondence).
The reason was that the Ukrainian media and some "actors" of the humanitarian persuasion assured them that the boy was not there. Then they assured that since the boy had died, that was certainly because his grandparents kept grenades in the yard. Therefore, I had to send a birth certificate of the child, then a certificate of death and the causes of death. Then photographs of a small funnel with fragments spreading 360 degrees. Then I had to write that his grandfather had to "bury" a fragment of his grandson's hand, which he found in the firewood after the funeral.
It was only after that that they arrived. Then they wrote for a long time ... I even had to explain to them that Vlad's parents had an audio recording of a conversation with the OSCE mission staff.
This boy's death was not convenient. They tried to ignore it. But, fortunately, there were those in the institutions of European power that did not allow this.
Back then I met Vladik's parents, Katya and Sergey. They are very bright guys. Sergei was a metallurgist, and Katya was a kindergarten teacher. I know that she could not work there after the death of her son: the children reminded her of her son.
Today it was Katya who responded to the death of eight-year-old Nikita [killed by a Ukrainian strike on Donetsk on March 11, 2023]. She wrote, "I would really like to give his mother strength and patience. I would like to show her how close her pain is and that there are people for whom this is not just a roundup of news, but a part of life. Anyone who once faced the loss of a child knows that it will no longer be the same as before, that life is just a physical state. Mentally and in this comment, I send her strength, stamina and faith in myself and in God. Faith that we will meet with them, and this separation is not eternal. "To live in the name of the memory of my child was once the only clue for me in this life. Dear girl (I'm sorry I don't know your name), I'm with you with all my heart and soul and our children are always with us, no matter what happens.
"I keep photos of Vladik. Today I received a photo of Nikita. He is happy on it, next to the pool. It turns out that he was taken out for several weeks on vacation last fall. The woman who received Nikita was crying when she spoke to me. Today she has other children next to her, "the same as Nikita.”
Thanks to Katia Osminogova for sharing the link.

The results of the "referendum" in Donetsk oblast were known even before the voting was done. Nobody even counted the votes, since it was obvious from the beginning that it was nothing like a legitimate process.
Local propaganda was trying its best to convince the people that "Ukrainian punishers are going to genocide the people in Donbas and the Kyiv junta is building concentration camps for them".
In actuality what they tried to pass as a "concentration camp" was an unfinished centre for the temporary detention of illegal migrants. In the bulletin used in "Lugansk national republic", just like the one in Donetsk, there was only one question: "Do you support the proclamation for the national sovereignty of Lugansk national republic"? There were two possible answers - "yes" or "no".
"This does not mean you are acting against Ukraine, - lied deputy Oleg Tsaryov, - this means that you will be able to choose by yourselves - through your governor and council - to form a federative Ukraine and offer all the other regions to join. You know that the same referendum is happening right now in the Donetsk region. Afterwards, you will be able to address all the other regions of Ukraine and offer them to do the same… I am more than certain that all the southeast Ukraine will support you, perhaps central and western regions as well. This path is giving you an opportunity to have more power in your hands that you will later give to Kyiv, or perhaps a different capital. But this will be your decision. After you vote in the referendum, you become a subject of the negotiations. This won't be an internal conflict anymore, it will be a conflict between two equal powers, where you will be represented".
