i say this in the kindest way possible but i think there's a lot of american critiques of saltburn that just don't quite grasp the british class system? and like i'm australian i haven't experienced it myself but like. the cattons are not the kind of rich that a person could conceivably aspire to. these are people descended from the mr darcys of the 19th century, who made their money from slavery and colonialism and it still hasn't run out and likely never will. they're probably related to the royal family somehow. oliver being so obsessed with them and doing terrible things in an attempt to reach that status despite being relatively privileged himself makes so much sense in that context.

I read a 300-ish page book the other day, after not reading a lot of pro-fiction in a while, and it was like... pretty much just Fine in terms of the pacing and how polished it was. I could see the bits where the author was handwaving and trying to get something ticked off to move on to the next scene. It was mostly a pretty decent read and there was a lot I liked about it, but it was solidly mid and I was suprised that it had been published by a Big 5 publishing house when I got to the end and realised it wasn't an indie.

To be clear, this isn't a "which proves fic is better than books" thing, I was just kind of pleasantly surprised that you can get a good-enough-but-not-amazing-and-kinda-sloppy book professionally published in this day and age and have decent ratings on Amazon and GoodReads.

#I'm not going to name names because I don't think it'd be very nice to damn a named individual with faint praise like this #and potentially hurt their livlihood #but like... I think I can certainly write something that's as good as that and I find that cheering #maybe I should write self published KU novels as my living honestly because I think I could do that #writing professionally is not enormously lucrative for most people but I can't seem to hold down normal jobs for longer than six months

because leon is the protagonist (or better yet, because people want to fuck leon), he must be a good person, and because he is a good person, anyone who is not fully on his side must be a bad person, but this sentiment is only applied to ada which means ada is a bad person, but because leon (man) helps and sometimes saves ada (woman), and vice versa, this means he is romantically attracted to her. and since people think leon (good) is attracted to ada (bad), this means leon fans have to try to understand why leon (good) wants to be with ada (bad.) so they rationalize his attraction to her by saying ada is actually good, but she is forced to be bad (which here just means using leon and nothing else) because of her job, and she feels guilty about this, so she hates her job and wants to be with leon. and now, because she wants to be with leon (good) and feels guilty about her job (bad), ada is good! which means leon fans can like ada because she is good now, and everything is wrapped up in a bow, and nobody has to have any complex thoughts or do any critical thinking ever 😌
