Memorie Della Collina

Su Instagram mi è stato mandato uno di quei template da condividere con le serie tv. E tra la scelte c'è questa: rispetto ad altre dello stesso periodo (inizio anni 2000m la serie è andata in onda dal 2003 al 2012), è probabilmente meno famosa, ma One Tree Hill ha ancora dei fanche la ricordano con affetto. La serie, creata da Mark Schwahn, ambientata nella fittizia città di Tree Hill in Carolina del Nord e segue le vite di due fratellastri, Lucas Scott (Chad Michael Murray) e Nathan Scott (James Lafferty), il cui rapporto evolve, nel corso della serie, da acerrimi nemici a fratelli devoti. Tra gli altri protagonisti, Peyton Sawyer, interpretata da Hilarie Burton, Haley James, interpretata da Bethany Joy Lenz e Brooke Davis, interpretata da Sophia Bush (che sono i personaggi nella foto).

Tra le chicche della serie, due musicali: è stata l'unica serie, insieme a The Sopranos, ad avere il placet direttamente dai Led Zeppelin per l'utilizzo di un loro brano (in questo caso, Babe I'm Gonna Leave You); lo stesso titolo della serie, One Tree Hill, venne a Schwahn mentre ascoltava The Joshua Tree degli U2, che hanno una canzone dello stesso titolo. La quale è un gioiello dalla storia triste: One Tree Hill è infatti il nome di una località non lontana da Auckland da cui proveniva Greg Carroll, uno degli assistenti di Bono, morto in un incidente stradale in Irlanda mentre guidava la motocicletta nel 1986, dopo pochi giorni dall'inizio delle registrazioni del memorabile disco. Il brano è famoso perchè, ricorda Brian Eno, Bono lo riuscì a cantare per intero in una unica, toccante, registrazione, con il famoso finale cantato in falsetto.

One of my favourite things is finding out the stories and evolution behind songs that go through different iterations.

Case in point for today, I was listening to a version of “Just a Gigolo | I ain’t got nobody” by chilean jazz band “Ángel Parra Trío” with my mom. Now, my mom loves the David Lee Roth version of the same song, which is probably the more well known one (also, fun fact, this is one of my go-to karaoke songs)

Thing is, I knew that both versions are covers of the song popularized by Louis Prima in the 50′s. But here’s the thing, I thought that that version was the original one; but what I found today was that actually, the original song its an austrian tango from 1928 called “Schöner Gigolo, armer Gigolo“, with lyrics written by Julius Brammer in 1924, and music by Leonello Casucci. Here’s a modern rendition of the original song, by german jazz act Max Raabe and the Palast Orchestra:

The other thing is that, I think the song its pretty self explanatory in it’s lyrics regarding the loneliness and nostalgia experienced by a male gigolo. But what I had no idea was that the original song had a political background and another meaning, since the song had a spoken part before the music comes in, where it chronicles the story of an austrian veteran from WW1 that, unable to find a job in post-war Vienna, has to get by working as a hired dancer (there was a thing in the 20′s-30′s called “taxi dancers” that were basically paid dancing companions that charged per song and often faced social discrimination, in many instances due to the fact that there were many establishments were taxi dancers were a cover for sex work).

Now, this particular historical context got lost because, when the song was translated to english by lyricist Irving Caesar after it’s rights were bought by record company Chappel & Co. (that nowadays belongs to Universal), they got rid of the first spoken verses that provided the context and located the song in 1920′s Vienna. Though I do have to say that Bing Crosby’s version from 1931 retained the spoken part that provided context, but it changed it from a postwar tale told in Vienna, to now being a tale told to an USamerican in a cafe in Paris by the titular gigolo).

The other fun thing I discovered was that the modern version, the one that was popularized by Louis Prima, its actually a medley of two songs, “Just a Gigolo” and “I Ain’t Got Nobody”. Most people (myself included before today) thought that it was one song, but it turned out that Prima’s version from 1956 combines both songs, with the second one, “I Ain’t Got Nobody” being an even older song. Even though the copyright was registered in 1914, it’s one of those cases where many people claimed to be the creators: the 1914 copyright (under the title “I Ain’t Got Nobody that Cares About Me”) names Charles Warfield as composer, David Young as the lyricist and Marie Lucas as the arranger, and Warfield also had claimed to have composed it before 1914; but there’s also another copyright from 1916, under the title “I Ain’t Got Nobody” that atributes the song to Spencer Williams, Davy Peyton and Roger Graham. There’s also two copyright fillings made in 1911, under the title “I Ain’t Got Nobody” by musicians Clarence E. Brandon Sr. and Billy Smythe.

Last thing I have to add is that, as expected from such old songs, there’s a ton of versions in many different languages: there are covers by Louis Armstrong, Django Reinhardt, Thelonius Monk, Connie Francis, Marlene Dietrich (which was used in the 1978 film “Just a Gigolo” that adapted the original tale of the song -but moved the action from Vienna to Berlin- and had David Bowie as the titular gigolo), just to name a few. But my favourite discovery was the fact that there’s a Village People version, which its not only fun, but it features the band in winter versions of their signature outfits in the video:

I’m ranting and if you don’t like criticisms of SB please ignore.

Sophia is defensive and her comments are frequently self-serving and gratuitous and the latest DQ podcast is further evidence of these behaviors. She is so defensive of Brooke it’s almost jarring. Her character is easily the most beloved, yet she still gets significant air time defending Brooke time after time. Hilarie’s character got sacrificed in s3 because of the irl bomb that was Chad and Sophia’s divorce that derailed that ship so fast, yet there has been hardly any defense from the girls for Hilarie despite her getting hate consistently for the storyline for years. Sophia regularly responds to people who rave over Brooke in her comments (ig, Twitter), and I know she has called out someone for hating on Peyton before in defense of Brooke, but my issue still stands. Brooke never should have gone after Lucas because she knew Peyton liked him. Peyton’s and Lucas’s storyline came together in season 3 as a result of the IRL divorce. These things matter and are clearly evident upon rewatch (and once you know when the divorce process started). I’m not saying Peyton and Luke wouldn’t have happened again, but I think it would have been led up to differently. It's wild to me that these revelations are not given airtime on the pod, especially by the psychoanalyzing member who calls out others for much less.

Anyway my point is Sophia has so much anger for some lines of Peyton’s getting cut in 4x15 that to her better explain Brooke’s choice to sleep with Nathan (I don’t agree anyway but w/e). Yet she is mum about how the character of Brooke or how Sophia’s in real life relationship troubles negatively impacted Hilarie and Peyton in a lasting way. I don't meant that it's Sophia's fault but clearly there is a correlation. This is egregious to me because Sophia knows better and refers to BTS problems when it benefits her narrative. There is none of this for Hilarie/Peyton and it annoys me for the above reasons.

Let’s also get into how odd it is for Sophia to get so defensive over Brooke as if she gets to decide what, in each episode, is and isn’t “really” Brooke. That’s not how it works. Especially when she doesn’t do that for Peyton and Haley during their big mistakes on the show. I know Mark sucked exponentially but the writers and him to a degree were responsible for the character of Brooke too. SB has many strengths but she’s not a comedian. The writers wrote her funny lines and the writers also made Brooke self-involved and venomous. SB gives so much weight to Brooke having absent parents to excuse her shortcomings but doesn’t do the same for Peyton when the two characters are at odds which is frustrating bc two of Peyton’s moms died and her dad is MIA.

It’s just so wild to have someone who works hard to be eloquent and knowledgeable so clearly work in a biased manner for a character that has been off air for 10 years and is not actually a reflection of her by most measures. Also in response to what SB suggested on the pod about both Peyton and Brooke having the same abandonment wound: Peyton's abandonment is SO different from Brooke's; they are just portrayed so differently and to different extents on the show.

Do you think you would’ve liked L*nds*y if she wasn’t an obstacle for Leyton? Also, which ship was harder for you to sit through as a Leyton shipper? Br*cas or L*ncas?

They would e had to seriously develop Lindsey as a character for me to like her because - removing the Lucas of it all - her character as we know her is very dry and dull

So…sure, there is a version of Lindsey I maybe could have liked. But if we’re just talking about the Lindsey we know then… probably not.

I kinda gloss over both brucas and lincas when I watch the show so idk lol like their scenes come on and I’m like ok time to do things

When I watched the show when it was airing I only had to sit through season 5 in real time (I started watching it live in season 4) so I guess in that case I’d say lincas cuz it was really up in the air who Lucas was gonna end up with

When I was binging the dvds I already knew Lucas and Peyton had their moment in the school shooting ep (the ep that got me into the show) so at least then watching brucas I knew I’d eventually get to that point

a bittersweet half-smile snuck its way into peyton's features: listening to lucas talk about her mom like that, it reminded her of something she barely ever had. a happy, tragedy-less life, or at least one in which all the tragedies didn't seem so bad because you had somebody to share them with. sure, she had her dad to count on, but as much as she loved him and was grateful for him, he was often out of hugging reach ― and the blonde would rather help brooke choreograph cheers for a month straight than admit this, but, sometimes, all she wanted was someone to hug her and tell her everything was gonna be okay. even if just for a little while.

“ yeah, professional sucker of everyone's light and joy to keep his douchebag wheels turning, that's dan sc.ott for you. what a bullet your mom dodged with that one. ” peyton instantly regrets the unfiltered, and therefore, tactless comment that flew out of her mouth, a mix of remore and shame plastered all over her face, “ i'm sorry, i didn't mean it like that, i'm sure he must've some redeeming qualities hidden underneath all that arrogance if someone as amazing as your mom fell in love with him once. it's his loss ― with you, too. ” now her default sincerity is tinted with more sensibility, so peyton feels confident enough to elaborate, “ yeah, i can relate, to wanting to protect her from as much of the hard stuff as you can. my dad calls and e-mails every once in a while, to check up on me, and i tell him i'm so happy to be living alone and on my own terms, just to try and keep him from worrying about me, y'know? but i don't think it works the way i'd intend it to, nor i think it should, because that's what being a good parent is, right? not being able to go a single moment without wondering of how the thing you love most in the entire world is doing out there, all on their own? ”

Estava "revisitando" minhas séries favoritas da infância e descobri que eu sempre escolho mal os meus shipp. Não sempre, mas na maioria.

1. One Tree Hill, eu era obcecada pelo Lucas Scott e shippava muito ele com a Brooke (Sorry Peyton). Hoje eu tenho outros olhos sobre a série, mas na época eu queria eles juntos e amava a amizade da Brooke e Peyton.

2. Floribella, sem spoilers, mas quem assistiu a novela sabe porque está nesta. O melhor casal sem dúvidas e sim, eu também era obcecada pelo Fred.

3. Rebelde, apesar de gostar mais do Miguel, minha crush master era a Roberta e eu torci para eles ficarem juntos a primeira temporada inteira. Hoje eu gosto mais dele com a Mia, mas me recuso a assistir a série pois torceria para todos terminarem com uma terapeuta.

4. Once Upon a time, meus personagens favoritos disparados eram Emma Swan, Regina Mills e Príncipe Charming. E sim eu estava obcecada pela Rainha Má. Meu shipp favorito Swanqueen, aquilo era quente, caras. Infelizmente com o avançar das temporadas tudo foi perdendo a graça e muitos personagens foram... Destruídos.

5. Bones, finalmente um que deu certo. Sim, shippei o clássica casal de protagonistas. Acho que foi uma dos poucos. Toda a série é maravilhosa apesar de tantas temporadas terem cansado um pouco. O elenco, mesmo trocando, sempre trouxe novos personagens cativantes.

Algumas dessas séries eu cresci junto e até hoje eu sei que impactam minha vida. A arte é essa coisa maravilhosa que a gente nunca sabe com quem vai mexer e como. Por isso, faça arte. Inspire as pessoas. Quem sabe um dia você não inspira alguém realmente importante.

just need to rant about how dumb lucas scott is for a second and I have nowhere else to post it so i’m saying it here dhjgsdg

Lucas in season five:

Sees Peyton after not speaking for two years, visibly looks heartbroken and asks her why she didn’t show up at his book signing when he asked her to.

Hasn’t written anything since they broke up, but Peyton tells him his art matters and suddenly is inspired to write a book again.

Gives her a huge large office space rent-free to help her launch her label. Tells her she has so much magic in her, is amazing and can accomplish anything she sets her mind to.

Tells Peyton she looks amazing and that a guy isn’t good enough for her. Is visibly jealous when Peyton is flirting with aforementioned guy.

Reminisces about him and Peyton’s final night together (where she turns down his proposal and breaks his heart) after Lindsey shows him a photo of the championship he wins which reminds him of when he deeply missed Peyton so much that he decided he wants to marry Peyton and start their lives together. Immediately looks for Peyton afterwards and wonders if he made the wrong decision about Peyton and his book three years ago.

When Brooke asks“You still love her, don’t you? Peyton,” doesn’t deny it but instead says nothing.

Goes to Peyton to ask her to apologize to Lindsey but then instead offers to drop everything to help her out of a stressful mess.

Has a dream about asking Lindsey to marry him while Peyton is on his bed in lingerie saying “say no, it’s what I did when he asked me.”

Lindsey says that Peyton feels like she has jurisdiction over Lucas because of their history. Lucas sides with Peyton, saying she has a big heart.

Is more concerned about Peyton’s feelings during the Peyton vs Lindsey war (especially when at Tric).

Tells Peyton that she gave up on them that same night and blames them for their breakup.

Kisses Peyton.

Has two opportunities to tell Peyton he doesn’t love her and to move on, but says nothing while being moved to literal tears.

Stares longingly at Peyton RIGHT before he’s about to get married.

Literally writes an entire epic romance novel about Peyton and how much he is in love with her and how he knows that she will come back to him.

Also Lucas: No, what! I am not in love with Peyton that is so random I can’t believe y’all would say that!!! It’s about a guy looking up at the sky!!!
