Muelas: We have been wanting to have on a representitive of female wrestling on here. Now we have on Lady Shani.

How are you?

Lady Shani: Hello! Very happy to be here with you. Thank you for the invitation.

Muelas: Thank you for coming on. We know that you are very fucking busy at the moment. As the French would say. Up and down. Where were you just wrestling at?

Lady Shani: From Piedras Negras. But there's always time for everything, so I'm here with you guys.

Muelas: She's here. She's slept very little.

Lady Shani: Yes. I've only been able to sleep 2 hours. But in a bit I'll be sleeping like a bear.

Muelas: That's good. Thanks for coming. You have had a relativly short career. It's going to be a positive for our interview...What attracted you to wrestling? What brought you into it?

Lady Shani: Well, at first I did not like wrestling at all. I've always liked to exercise. When I would see wrestling on TV at home, I would yell at my mom to change the channel off that low class garbage. My mother is a stylist.

She would work at the place and she would tell me that Vampiro Canadiense would go in. I would be flabbergasted as to who that was.

So starting out I was at the New Jordan Gym. Mr. Lizmark was there. Solar, Super Astro were there too. They would always invite me to wrestling class. But I would always back off and tell them I didn't like that.

In school when I would have to do tumbling for PE, I wouldn't want to do them. They almost flunked me over that. I didn't want to do that. It didn't feel right for me or my neck. One day I just decided to train with Lizmark. It was more out of pride. There were all men training. I couldn't even tumble.

The guys would take advantage of me. They were young men.

The thing is that it seemed like a good workout and I wanted to try it out. I started training just to excersize.

What age were you during this time?

Lady Shani: 15

Catscratcho: Very young..

Lady Shani: Yes. I was in school at the time. Specializing in nursing. A technical career. I couldn't keep that up due to the times but, I switched my schedule and started training with Platino. Who would take even more advantage of me and was really rough. Those sessions where I would train with men, and they would leave my chest raw. I looked like a panda.

My dad was furious about me training wrestling because he would say that I would turn into Martha Villalobos and act differently.

My mom would support me. She never thought I would make it this far. I'm a single child so mother didn't want anything to happen to me. My father later became a big fan.

Muelas: What year did AAA start to talk to you? When did you debut and under what character?

Lady Shani: I debuted as Sexy Lady in 2012. I had already begun to tag with the women in AAA then. I was undergoing a lot of changes and trying things out with my character. I debuted on a TV taping in Veracruz. I would be there for 3 years about.

So since your beginings, you wrestled for AAA?

Lady Shani: Um. No. I had wrestled for a one to two years as an independent.

Muelas: How is that stage for a woman?

Catscratcho: It's more complicated right?

Lady Shani: Yes. The truth is that it was during a time that women were held to a different standard and it was evolving so that we were becoming something different than 'Martha Villalobos'. At that time, I wasn't totally into the wrestling.

But at that time is when I sort of became addicted to the pain. I started to do extreme wrestling. I think that was a big attention getter for me. At the time there weren't a lot of women doing that style of wrestling. Only 2 or 3. That was something that really made me more well known.

When I entered AAA, I stopped doing that. But it's something I miss a lot.

Muelas: Seriously?

Lady Shani: Yes. If it was up to me. I would still be doing it.

Muelas: Well that's a messed up. It's a short shot as an extreme wrestler.

Lady Shani: Yes of course. I know its not about getting to the finish but, to stay there. I want to maintain my place here. But if it was up to me, I would do it once in a while.

Muelas: What is up with female extreme wrestling? How is it? How do you work that out?

LAdy Shani: The truth is that during that time I was with another girl who was Ludark (her cousin) and we tried to keep it a complete match that had a little of everything. Not just breaking lights on each other.

Because there was a time when people had that image that people would wrestle this style because they can't do anything else. "They only bust lightbulbs". "They only do that".

Catscratcho: It was the cliche.

Lady Shani: Uhuh. What we tried to do was to have a complete match. Once I stopped doing that. Ludark is still going on with that. But when I stopped after joining AAA, thousands of women started to wrestle that style. Only because they break lights on themselves and think that it's easy. Breaking a lightbulb takes preparation..ok.

Muelas: Of course. You have to be prepared to take that hit.

Lady Shani: So right now I look and see that their all extremas. Wrestlers came crawling from under rocks that are now extreme/hardcore wrestlers. The entire world. But what sticks with me is that we started there.

Catscratcho: Right now you mention the truth. You are part of a new wave of female wrestlers that break the boundries. Like with your physique. You are not just like Martha Villalobos.

Lady Shani: Yes, I do think that it was changing. But, I feel like what we had to do was to change everything. I feel that my style is very different because I'm very aggressive and there aren't women like that. I'm like a boy with a girl's body.

That's what I tell everyone. They say I'm not a woman, I'm a man. So that's how they describe me and there are some that just look pretty and don't wrestle. I think there's a little of everything here.

Muelas: A balance? no?...What obsticales did you encounter as a woman in wrestling? What differences do you think exist between a man and woman in wrestling?

How is the treatment and how is it in the dressing room? With promoters?..

Lady Shani: Yes, you get treated differently. Now that I can say that I'm here and still wrestling that it's because of pride. I've been facing it since I started training when people would treat me as a way to scare me off and not return.

I kept coming back with the mentality that they wouldn't hit me. I swear when I would come back and even when I was with AAA, because there were people that didn't breakout or got stuck in the same place. They would be there years and years. But when I went back to training there, they wouldn't even touch me. I wondered why they wouldn't anymore.

That whole thing just made me stronger. I learned how to defend myself and I think that will always stick with me. Because there's always some guy that wants to hurt you. At the current moment I still feel that there is a lot of machismo to deal with.

Wheather it be to have a spot on the card or not want to be in a match with a woman. Stuff like that. Or even you'll encounter promoters that want to be always behind you. There's a bit of everything, but you learn how to manage and put a stop to it.

Muelas: You have to set the respect for yourself.

Catscrathco: So is this all you encountered? Or are there more issues?

Muelas: Even between women right? How do the women get along? (Complicated?)

Lady Shani: Well..yeah. I'm one of the least conflictive people. What I want to do is work, but those people always exist. Or in my case that I hit them hard that it's because I'm jealous or on purpose. I just tell them that it's my style and I'm like that with women and men. I like wrestling that way. But more with men.

Catscratcho: Oh yeah? (You have a heavy hand?)

Lady Shani: Yes. I'm a boy.

Muelas: Why more against men? Do they have more resistance or what?

Lady Shani: Yes. I know I won't have any problems like them complaining that I'm hitting too hard or on purpose. But I'll tell you that there are some men that complain more than women.

Catscratcho: How was it that you changed the name from Sexy Lady? How long were you Sexy Lady for in AAA?

Lady Shani: In AAA?..3 years and it changed September of last year. I felt I had to make a change because I wasn't going anywhere. I started feeling like it was the same, but it was a change that I had authorized. To change everything from my body to my gear to make this a whole new change. I was desperate because it took me nearly a year to go through this change.

Catscratcho: Even your ringwork had some changes to it.

Lady Shani: It was a big change and a long process. I didn't think I would get another opportunity to do it so I just got word that in September I would debut it. It was nice. It was in Monterrey and even though I don't have a lot of time with this character, I feel I have adapted very well. The fans like it a lot.

Catscratcho: Was it complicated for you?

Lady Shani: Not really. The complicated part was training. To stay in the fan's favor and to keep training. I'm one of those people that always has to be moving and never still. I'm always at the gym. Whether it be training wrestling or weights. I'm always there.

You can't stay in one phase and expect the fans to keep coming back.

Muelas: So your gear and character..how much say and influence did you have on creating this? Did they give it to you or what?

Lady Shani: No..Yes..they asked me for ideas. So I started looking for all this stuff. With all the ideas I sent in, they created the character. It's based on Kitana from Mortal Kombat. But for the name, I had sent in various names. It was between Shalixe or Shani.

I really like the Egyptian culture so I wanted Shalixe but, I realized it was easier if I went with Shani.

Muelas: What does that mean?

Lady Shani: Shalixe also means 'beautiful perfection'. It's an Egyptian name and Shani means the same thing but it's 'hindu'. So I liked that name but Shani was easier to deal with.

(Hosts agree that she did the right thing in going with the easier version)

Catscratcho: Are you really a gamer? If not why Mortal Kombat?

Lady Shani: YES. I told you I'm a boy and since I was little, I was living at the arcade. Maybe not so much anymore but before I would be there all day. I would get out of school to go play. It would be either arcade or Mario Bros at home.

Catscratcho: So you are a big fan. So let's get into the other side of you. We know you like video games. What other things do you do outside of wrestling?

Lady Shani: Really I don't have that much free time. In that time that I do have, I sleep like a bear. I like going to movies, theatre, and I guess staying at home. I have 2 dogs that I like to play with when I'm home. Other than that, I go to the gym and sleep in, rest. When I have time I'll go to the movies but, it's not often that I get to.

Muelas: Do you like a specific film genre or all of them.

Lady Shani: I like them all. I have to admit I like some emotional ones, but people tell me I don't even have feelings. I swear. I do like romantic movies. Movies like the 'Theory about everything'... You have to see it. Everyone was telling me to go see it. I cry every time I see it.

I'm still a fan of those Alicia movies that are cartoon from childhood. I saw that one too and was crying and crying. But I really like horror too. They don't really make good horror films anymore. All the ones make me laugh or get angry.

Muelas: Did you watch "La Bruja"?

Lady Shani: No.

Muelas: You should. It's not a full on horror film that's easy to get. It's not like those that just scare you. It;s a good story. If you watch it with someone you can think of it relating to you and will leave you with doubts. It makes you think. Not a classic horror film but, I recommend it.

Lady Shani: I will go see it. I always have people telling me on Facebook, that x movie is good or not good. Stuff like that. But I'll go see it.

That sounds like a real scary movie. But have you seen the film "The human centipede"?

(Hosts are creeped out)

Lady Shani: That's really scary. Did you watch the second one?..It's nastier than the first. It even came out in black and white.

(Hosts are creeped out and switch subjects)

Catscratcho: Once you started wrestling and were into it full on, who were you a really big fan of and had as an influence?

Lady Shani: Really when I started to watch matches on TV, I was a really big fan of Mistico. My father would take me to the matches at Arena Coliseo. I was a Mistico superfan. I had little tights like Mistico. I collected everything of his.

Even to this day I still love watching him and how he wrestles. He still has loads of charisma and grace. His movements. I still like him a lot. Really what I like is the Japanese wrestling. The strong style. I like that.

Of the wrestlers that I admire..I just had the oppurtunity to meet him at a TV taping last year. It was Low Ki. I'm a big fan of his.

Muelas: Many wrestlers that have come on have mentioned Low Ki. He's one of the biggest influences on Mexican Wrestling currently and he's not that old. He's had a big influence and you see it how wrestlers today use some of the same moves.

Lady Shani: Yeah. So many moves I see being done and right away I know that's Low Ki's move. It should be humbling to have a big influence on current wrestling like him.

Muelas: Something I see from foreign wrestlers when they come to Mexico is that they don't go as hard. Do you see the same thing?

Lady Shani: Yes.

Muelas: For example you'll see when Fenix goes to Japan or I don't someone else that when they wrestle there, they give extra effort. I don't know, maybe it's a thing with us where we think we know about wrestling and we see things like Wagner's presence. He's a complete star.

But for example the Mexican fan will see Pimpinela wrestle and do a move and be wowed. But Pimpinela will get the biggest reaction when he puts his ass in someone's face. Or when he kisses the referee. I think part of the blame is on the fan for being uneducated. I see this same comment being made on forums and facebook about the fans.

You know. "Why don't they wrestle like that here?" or "Why not have matches like on Lucha Underground?". Then you'll go see Blue Demon wrestle on the match with Pentagon and fans will be screaming at them to really wrestle.

Lady Shani: When I saw Low Ki. It was at Xalapa at a taping and when he'd wrestle I was like "oh my god". I was so into his match and every move that he did. The fans didn't really take it in. I was like "what is going on?" They really don't appreciate it.

We got some big Japanese names to come over for the world cup and the same thing happened there. They weren't into them. There's all types of fans.

When you go to Laredo for example, you'll see these fans not really into it. You can be on the mat, throwing blows, acting goofy, and they would still be there quiet. You don't even know what to do. They're weird.

Muelas: Who are the toughest fans to wrestle in front of?

Lady Shani: Really it was at the Arena Naucalpan. That place left an impression on me. That was my start. Those fans are really demanding there.

Catscratcho: That arena has something.

Lady Shani: Yes. The truth is that I get nervous when I have to work there.

(Muelas thinks Naucalpan can give you the raw wrestling of Mexico and is really the underground wrestling of Mexico)

Catscratcho: Were you at the World Cup?

Lady Shani: No. No. No.

Catscratcho: But you were at the show?

Lady Shani: Not at all. I had worked at Lagos de Moreno the day before and was off. The time you get off, you should rest. When you have so much wrestling in your head, more wrestling is the last thing you want to see.

Catscratcho: You just want to disconnect yourself.

Lady Shani: Yes. I got back early and just thought about sleeping. I had to be at the airport at 2 in the morning. So it wouldn't be possible.

Muelas: I think AAA are still doing important things and still holding big events even if there are scandals happening or odd dealings. They still give the fans what we want to see.

You know what I still want to see in AAA. A womens rivalry culminate with a big match. Before they have done that with Faby Apache and Faby is one of the best around. It's like they haven't moved on to the next female figure. Something with Taya or even Mary. There's so many there now.

You look at WWE. Now they've womens matches moving up the card and semi main-eventing. They give them that importance. You'll see on RAW, John Cena or AJ Styles there and a womens match main event.

Don't you think Mexico can learn from this and replicate some of it?

Lady Shani: Yes, they can learn a lot. It needs to be done here. The women could use a bit more importance. A rivalry would be great for me but, really all that is around is Faby and Mary. Us rudas are me, Hiedra, Taya, Maravilla is not here anymore.

We are capable and strong. We can do something like a cagematch.

Muelas: Exactly something like a cagematch. For the Reina de Reinas title would be cool.

Catscratcho: I think that would give the title luster...Do you think the fans are ready for something like this?

Lady Shani: Yes. I think they are and they ask for it. Something great would be to have those matches and it would be entertaining for the fans. We are always pulling each other’s hair and you'll see lots of violence on behalf of all the women. It would be fun.

Muelas: Have you ever had a bad run in with another female wrestler? Like one that didn't like you.

Lady Shani: No. Time ago when I was wrestling hardcore matches I would always bump into this one woman named Sadica. She would finish on the floor crying in pain. It was very weird because I don't get like that ever. They can do what they want to me, but when they slap me and pull my hair very strong, I get worked up.

So I crossed the line with her, but we put that aside and everything is fine now. I'm very relaxed outside the ring. I don't go around picking fights.

Catscratcho: Yeah you even have a good relationship with La Guera, Taya Valkyrie.

Muelas: Things have gone very well for her. The fans have taken to her very well. It's been a while since a foreigner has been embraced like her.

Lady Shani: Yes, I always remember because I met her the first day she got here. I still trained at New Jordan Gym. In the evenings. I will admit I was a bit excessive with her at the start and now we are friends so it was more to help her learn and she learned.

Really she is of the few foreigners that have learned lucha. Because I see so many that come over and don't learn. She's always at the gym training to perfect everything.

Catscratcho: She even came from Lance Storm Academy.

Muelas: Exactly. What about Jennifer...what was her last name?

Lady Shani: Blake.

Muelas: I think she picked up the style when she wrestled here. I think she didn't have a big moveset but, after wrestling here and putting in effort she looked much better.

Lady Shani: No...(sounds like an edit occurs because she starts talking about Taya), it's like most of the foreign women don't pick it up. But she has done very well here.

Muelas: I was very impressed with her match against some of the men in Lucha Underground.

Lady Shani: Yes. If only the people here in Mexico had the confidence to have those matches here.

Muelas: What man would you like to have a match with and go all out?

Lady Shani: With Pentagon.

Muelas: Both of you are excessively rough. Some good chops there.

Lady Shani: Yeah because when I would wrestle with him, it would always be tagging.

Muelas: Have you thought about joing the tecnico side?

Lady Shani: Oh no. For nothing. I had to work as one a few days ago and that bad side would come out. No way I could do it. Its not in my plans. When I started as a tecnica, I never wanted to be rudo. But that side just came out when I would wrestle so that's what I became. (BREAK)

Catscratcho: How has it gone for you personally?

Lady Shani: This past Heroes Inmortales there was a match for the Reina de Reinas title. I really liked the match. I got to work with all the women. I saw the comments and they were very postive. (With Taya winning) Uhuh. That was when Taya won the title.

I tell people that I'm in no rush to win a title or a hair. I tell them I'm still training and preparing for what is to come. I always aim for the biggest. So I wouldn't mind if they put me in with La Hiedra. But the strongest ones are Taya, Faby, Mary. The rest would be easy. They are the toughest.

Muelas: I think you should go pick a fight with Mary. She's still an amazing wrestler.

Lady Shani: She's like a boy too. She hits hard. I like her alot because she's very strong.

Muelas: So is La Hiedra still around???

Lady Shani: Yeah, she's there. Yesterday I worked with her as her partner.

Catscratcho: Now that we touched on it. Have you had matches in Japan or done a tour?

Lady Shani: Not yet. My idea is to or was before I made the character change, was to stay over there 6 months to a year and learn. Now I don't want to go, but if they could send me for a couple weeks, I'd be happy. I want to go to Japan.

Muelas: After hearing you talk about the matches there, I know it would make you happy and would be a postive for your career. We hear that the training is very difficult and disciplined.

Have you had the chance to wrestle a Japanese yet?

Lady Shani: No...I wrestled once with Douki and Eita. I see that the matches are different over there. I see the women sometimes are stronger than the men.

Catscratcho: You have Asuka in NXT and you see what she's been able to do.

Lady Shani: Of course. I used to watch her matches in Japan and what she did over there is very different than what she does now. Now it's light.

Muelas: Yes, she has to turn it down. Because in Japan they are "addicted to pain".

I see that your very attached to social media and have hashtags all over the place. Is it code for your boyfriend or something?

Lady Shani: No. I may be addicted to pain but I'm not going around the streets looking to inflict pain on myself. I like it in wrestling. That thing I do with "leve" is something that's always really heavy. So when we say that, like between me and Taya, it means heavy or hard. Like we'll smack each other in a hallway. That's where that came from.

Muelas: How is it when you go out and people see you. Like they must know that it's you and your with Taya. How do the guys react to you?

Lady Shani: Not that much. We don't ever go out. Apart from her and her hair that's red. We can't ever go anywhere normal without people starring at us. With me it's difficult because of the mask. Like if we go to a place around an arena, there's usually fans walking around and they can identify me.

It's usually because of the tattoos. Then I feel super weird and creeped out because they'll send me a facebook message later. "I saw you at this place. I know it's you because I saw your tattoo."

So that scares me. I feel stalked. I was out one time getting corn and some guy sent me a message saying that I looked beautiful eating corn. I was terrorfied. I ran out when I saw it.

Muelas: You got it in that instant!?!

Lady Shani: I swear. I got it like five minutes after.

Muelas: What the fuck? Maybe someone is following you around. (lol)

Lady Shani: There are super weird people out there. There is one girl that always sends me a message to send him pictures of my feet. There's a lot of sick people out there.

Muelas: Yeah, I can see a great deal of fans being a little off. For the other women how do you see that playing out with them?

Dealing wit fans and promoters? I don't know.

Lady Shani: Well look. What happened sometimes when I walk to the ring is that I'll get grabbed and the thing is that they're children. Like ten year olds.

One time it happened and I was traumatized. I swear I felt like the most violated woman in the world. I just felt a spanking and fingers all of a sudden. I didn't know what was going on. I looked around and was super angry. It was a little boy. I almost let a hand go and I probably would have been in prison after that.

That's why some people go through like throwing themselves around because you always get grabbed by little boys. Not the older males. Usually the little boys will do that. The older ones will be more calmer and the little boys will be yelling all these mean things. I wonder if their sick.

Muleas: Seriously? Like what is wrong with them.

Lady Shani: Yes. Little 8 or 7 year old boys.

Hosts agree that they've seen kids act out at shows but not at that level.

Catscratcho: So you think fans have been respectful of you outside of that?

Lady Shani: I don't know what it is. It's like they're afraid. They don't even want to talk to me. I feel bad. I feel like I have no friends. They don't talk to me. I don't know what it is. When I would arrive to places that I had to wrestle local women, I would feel that they were afraid of me or something.

I would reassure them that I would be nice and not do anything bad.

Muelas: Are there any wrestlers that you have seen at these shows that you go to that have the potential to be someone important? Does anyone stand out?

Really in AAA there are few and in CMLL there's the same ones as always.

Lady Shani: Well...there is one. It's Hiedra's sister. Lady Chicana. She has a nice body and good look. She's a little short and has little time wrestling. She looks good for just starting out and she's very confrontational. So she could pan out. She could join AAA soon if given the chance.

Muelas: That would be cool. Is she still too young or what?

Lady Shani: I think she's 15 or 16 years old.

Muelas: Oooh..so your saying we should start early in this sport?

Lady Shani: I think there's a little of everything. I think that some people take to it easily.

Muelas: I was thinking about it and there is the case of Takashi Sugiura who started later on in life like around 29, 28 and now you see him wrestle and he's impressive. He was a champion in NOAH.

Lady Shani: I don't think there's an age.

Muelas: How do you do it with heavier women. Like Hechicera and Goya Kong? Is it harder?

Lady Shani: Well, yes. They are at their weight and you just gotta be smart about it and to even the field you just give them a kick to the knee and they won't be able to get up.

(Hosts lol)

When they would get a hold of you, it would be rough. Oh my ribs. It would always be a thing with them. I always liked to work with Goya. She was strong and she could get you and throw down planchas to crush you, but it wasn't only that. I liked to work with her.

Catscratcho: Are there wrestlers that ask you for advice?

Lady Shani: Yes. There are some that come up to me and do it. I feel old. Some ask me like I'm an old woman. I usually will give advice about training and diet through messenger. It's nice to be an example.

Muelas: Hey, we forgot to ask who trained you.

Lady Shani: I started trainign with Lizmark. Then Platino, Dr. Karonte, Silver King, Apache (currently), Steve Pain, who is more strong style.

Muelas: I remember seeing how they misused Steve Pain and was very underrated here. Dr. Karonte is Mistico's father right? What did you call him? Dad in law?

Lady Shani: Yes! (lol) No, he was intimidating. But I didn't get to train that long wit him. I trained a while with El Villano.

Muelas: So you've had many?

Lady Shani: Yes, they are all good but the one I'm with right now is El Apache on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday.

Muelas: He is so good at training women.

Lady Shani: Yes, he instills a great amount of confidence and is always helping us out.

Muelas: We always here good things about him. What do you want to accomplish this year? What does your career need?

Lady Shani: I think its a question of time. I barely have a year or more with this new character so I already feel like I've made great progress. I can imagine what's coming for me this year. So I already have an idea and want to have better matches and give the best of me to keep the fans happy. I think they put you in the place you deserve. So with the work you put in, you get what you deserve. I just wait to see what they think of my work.

Muelas: Would you challenge Taya?

Lady Shani: Yes of course. She's my friend and all but in the ring it's very different. We've faced each other before.

Muelas: Where have you faced off?

Lady Shani: At Heroes Immortales, it was all women for all. Even before when she was a tecnica, I wrestled her.

Muelas: Who do you think is a game changer for womens lucha libre?

Lady Shani: I don't really admire anyone. But I think they all had their time. I'm not a fan of many, but I love Aja Kong. When she came over for the world cup, I would have loved to have wrestled her. Her, Nenae Takahashi, Meiko Satomura. I like how they wrestle, but if were listing men. Then Mistico for me has always had the skill and charisma.

Catscratcho: Your dream match?

Lady Shani: Low ki and Aja Kong.

Muelas: You want Aja Kong? How about at Triplemania?

Lady Shani: Yes! I don't care where!

Muelas: At the corner taco stand?

Lady Shani: Yes! I'll do it!

Catscratcho: Favorite finisher?

Lady Shani: Backcracker. Any move with a backcracker in it. Another is that I have a submission like an arm bar.

Muelas: And of someone else?

Lady Shani: The suplexes Low Ki does. Really anything done by Low Ki is amazing. There's a lot of strong moves so I like them all and the suplexes. Like you see in Japan. My character is more aimed towards MMA. I trained for a couple months. I would get so into it and injure myself. So I stopped that.

Catscratcho: Your social media? Because we know there are a lot of fakes out there.

Lady Shani: I know! Don't even get me started. It makes me very upset. They reported my facebook page. I had one with my name and they shut it down. There's another one created by a sick guy out there making fake pages and they get shut down but, he keeps making new ones.

He'll post whatever I post, with the same location and evreything. So people think its the real one.
