   this wasn’t supposed to happen . it should have been a simple breaking-and-entering , nightwing had come to confront gannon doyle for his company’s hand in poisoning an entire blüdhaven police department with anabolics . see , the b . p . d is already annoying to deal with on its own , the vigilante in blue could do without the added aggression and kryptonian strength . his plan was a relatively simple one : enter the building , avoid hurting anyone more than the necessary , convince ( read : threaten ) doyle to get the toxin off the streets , and then done . dick can go home to walk his pup , and avoid getting the last of his furniture ripped to shreds ; dick’s first grievous error that evening , he realizes , was ever assuming anything could be that simple in his line of work .

   nightwing’s jaw twitches , he grits his teeth watching doyle fall limp to the floor , then raises his gaze to the culprit standing behind the desk . the white of his mask narrows into slits , he steps further into the room — if he strains his ears he can catch the faint shouting of guards as they make their way towards their floor . that only gives him a few minutes to take taissa down and make his escape in order to avoid the firefight , “ close . the name’s nightwing , and you’re not in gotham anymore , toto . i’d suggest you put your murder weapon down before this gets ugly . ”

   her glare makes him bristle , but his face remains carefully neutral . “ i’m not the gent you were expecting — but i assure you , i can be just as bad . ” he speaks smoothly , the edge of his lips twitch , hinting at a smile , but the man’s muscles are coiled tight — like a snake ready to strike . “ this is a little embarrassing to admit , but no one told me we had a date . sorry , goldilocks , won’t you let me make it up to you ? how does a nice , long trip to lockhaven sound ? ” and with that , nightwing attacks ; he moves quickly , reaching for his escrima sticks strapped to his back after throwing his wingdings towards taissa in order to knock the knife out of her hand .

The first home I can remember was near a river in Northcentral Pennsylvania and each summer toads would populate our large, grassy yard. As a kid, I never knew where they came from or where they were going, but I delighted in providing them shelter in a five-star shoebox with grass bedding for a day or two. I’m sure they were freaked out to be abducted, held captive, and fed grass, but to me, the interaction was magical.

Board of Governors selects Bashar Hanna to be Lock Haven University's interim president

​Will continue as president of​ Bloomsburg University​

HARRISBURG –  Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education today selected Bashar Hanna to serve as interim president of Lock Haven University, starting Feb. 5, 2021.

Hanna will continue to serve as president of Bloomsburg University, a position he’s held since 2017. And he has extensive experience with the State System, including time served at Kutztown University as dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and interim provost from 2005 to 2009.

Hanna also leads a team overseeing the proposed integration of three universities – Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, and Mansfield – into a single accredited entity with three distinct campuses.

“Dr. Hanna’s expertise has guided Bloomsburg and the entire integrations effort with great skill and with a sharp focus on student success,” Board chair Cindy Shapira said. “He has our full confidence as a leader of two campuses and as someone who can bring constituencies together in the common purpose of quality, affordable public higher education.”

Hanna succeeds President Robert Pignatello, who is joining the Office of the Chancellor as Senior Advisor for Integration Strategy, focusing on workforce development and short-term credentials.

"Dr. Hanna has proven himself to be a student-focused leader driven by a passion for public higher education," Chancellor Dan Greenstein said. "The expertise and heart he brings to the university is also present in the work underway on integrations. We are excelling toward the goals of bolstering student success and expanding opportunities at these three campuses thanks in large part to Dr. Hanna's leadership."

Hanna’s accomplishments at Bloomsburg include improving student retention by 5 percent in just two years, doubling the Bloomsburg Foundation’s endowment growth to $60 million, and establishing the President’s Commission on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

“On behalf of the Bloomsburg University Council of Trustees, I congratulate President Hanna on this additional appointment,” said Superior Court Judge Mary Jane Bowes, chair of the university’s trustees council. “Since Dr. Hanna began guiding B.U. in 2017, we have been grateful for his visionary leadership and keen focus on student success, and particularly for his expertise during the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the current integration discussions with Lock Haven and Mansfield Universities. I have every confidence that Dr. Hanna is the right leader for Bloomsburg, and am certain that his collaborative approach and strong leaderships skills will be equally as effective at Lock Haven.”

Hanna earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology, a master’s degree in developmental biology, and a Ph.D. in developmental neurobiology from Temple University in Philadelphia.

In addition to his experience at Kutztown, Hanna worked as associate dean of the College of Science and Technology at Temple University before becoming chief academic officer and dean of academic affairs for DeVry University.

At Delaware Valley College in Doylestown, Pa., from 2011 to 2016, Hanna served as vice president for academic affairs. Before his time at Delaware Valley, he also worked as associate provost at Ithaca College, Ithaca, N.Y.

“The Lock Haven University trustees and I look forward to welcoming Dr. Hanna into the Lock Haven family,” Daniel Elby, chair of the Lock Haven Council of Trustees said. “Dr. Hanna has a strong history of championing student success throughout his career. As leader of the Northeast Integration, he is uniquely situated to shepherd Lock Haven University into its next, exciting chapter.”

It had been a long time since Sir Vigilantia returned home alone. Before she took on her young squire she was always alone, riding back onto the palace grounds with her most dignified stoic expression, her helmet on with the visor up so that all who saw her knew it was her, The Vigil Knight, returning to her beloved Lockhaven. Smith's presence only changed this slightly; he often went ahead or trailed behind, so it wasn't uncommon, still, for her to return home alone, head held high and knuckles cracked and bloodied beneath metal gloves. However, she occasionally returned with her squire at her side, leading their horses behind them and looking up at the stone-faced knight like she held the answers to the universe in her steely gaze. And as the two grew closer, it became more frequent that they returned together, Vigil with a proud smile or even a hearty laugh as she and her friend recounted their latest adventures. Still, when she returned from a mission she deemed too dangerous for her squire, she was always The Vigil Knight, stoic and serious and impossible to read save for her pride, and her fatigue. Baronet Blacwin deGray changed all that. The first time she returned to Lockhaven with him, she didn't parade into the palace with her armored horse and shield and sword; it was late, and she took him to dinner at her favorite pub and she smiled the whole damn night. And, sure, people talked when they saw him the next morning, but Vigilantia was still herself, even if her friends could tell that she was fond of the stranger by the way her brow furrowed and her fists clenched. When they went out on missions together, Vigilantia was still The Vigil Knight. She departed with every intention of remaining loyal to her people, doing the best she could on whatever harrowing task awaited them, and she rode off on her armored warhorse with her head held high and her brow creased with focus, and Blacwin gave a smirk (maybe a wink, if a maiden happened to be watching) and urged his black horse onward to follow her. She never returned with her expressionless glare when she returned with Blacwin. Granted, she often returned looking annoyed, or even livid, with Blacwin either smug or sulking depending on how badly he pissed her off. But there were still times that they returned and she was laughing, or at least smiling proudly, or giving him fond looks as only they could. Teasing and bickering the whole way through the castle gates, Smith following right behind with either a grin or exasperated sigh. Vigilantia was still The Vigil Knight, but her city saw a new side to her. Vigilantia, a knight but also a woman. A hero but also a person. Even she wasn't completely unfazed, even she couldn't deny such affections. That all came crumbling down after Sir Huntingdon's death. After Blacwin's betrayal. The entire kingdom seemed to still be in shock, even with the details being varied rumors outside of the castle walls. A hero was dead. It was more than that for Vigilantia. He was her mentor, her friend, more a father to her than her 'true' father could ever hope to be. He was the kingdom's hero, sure, but he was her hero. He meant the world to her. And so did Blacwin, and so she lost two of her closest friends in one swift action, and none of it made sense. For Blacwin was the one who killed him. Her closest companion killed her mentor, and nothing was right again. She was taken advantage of again, after promising herself she wouldn't let it happen. And Hal was who paid for it. Blacwin swore he would never have harmed the old knight, but the evidence was too great for her to trust him. People watched him do it- Smith watched him do it. Sir Hal was bludgeoned with Blacwin's weapon. How could he deny the act? But he did, without even offering an explanation. Not giving her the slightest cause to believe him. She wasn't seen outside the castle walls for weeks; she was either holed up in meetings with her fellow knights or in the dungeon, trying to force him to explain his betrayal or at least to figure out what he stood to gain, whether the kingdom was in further danger. He offered her nothing but baseless pleas until he simply gave up; surely she would not believe him. She couldn't afford to. Eventually, her loyalty to her duties overtook her conscience again, and she refused to keep herself in the safety of the castle any longer. She owed it to Hal and to Lockhaven to continue to be the knight she promised to be. Her pain was irrelevant. Still, she went and she returned, mission after mission, no task too dangerous and no destination too far. She returned alone each time. Not because Smith was never beside her, for often he was. But he trailed slightly back, watching her with a melancholy concern, no jokes or banter or even a smile. She kept her gaze straight ahead, sweat and grime sticking to her skin and blood streaked across her cheek or forehead. Some of the less observant city dwellers decided she was "back to normal," back to how she'd been before she'd met Blacwin or even Smith, but most knew better. Her expressionless scowl was once proud, determined, somehow defiant. Now, it was empty. Her eyes no longer sang of conquest and intrigue but reflected the stone walls of her city, grey and bare and immobile. She was not the same as she'd been when she had first been alone. When she was first alone, she didn't understand that she didn't have to be.
