My imagination makes me human and makes me a fool; it gives me all the world, and exiles me from it.

My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.

Stop beating yourself up. You are a work in progress - which means you get there a little at a time, not all at once.

Let there be seasons so that we may put on twelve coats and shovel snow or take off our skins and bathe in the Carribean.
Let there be seasons so that the rain will bury many ships.
For I pray that my typewriter, ever faithful, will not break even though I threw it across the hospital room six years ago.
For I pray that the wooden room I live in will faithfully hold more books as the years pass.
For she prays that her touch will be milk.
For I pray that God will digest me.
Rejoice with the day lily for it is born for a day to live by the mailbox and glorify the roadside.
For there were only two windows on the city and the buildings ate me.
For I could not read or speak and on the long nights I could not turn the moon off or count the lights of cars across the ceiling.
No. No. The woman is cheerful, she smiles at her stomach. She has swallowed a bagful of oranges and is well pleased.
For she is a magnitude, she is many. She is each of us patting ourselves dry with a towel.
For she is nourished by darkness.
For she is seeing the end of her confinement now and is waiting like a stone for the waters.
Appear with a flashlight so the stars will not get tired.
Bring forth a wheel to cart the dead into paradise.
Anne Sexton, excerpts from the poem, “O Ye Tongues”

LEGENDBORN by Tracy Deonn
Legendborn is an extremely complex and mature YA novel that reads like a video game: I felt like I had to simultaneously interpret all the little details going on around me while keeping the overarching picture - which was constantly in flux - in the forefront of my mind. I felt like I needed another set of arms to hold the multitudes in this book, to find a way to weave it all together and do it justice within my own head.
Think mystery meets romance meets high fantasy meets dark academia meets inclusive YA novel with nonbinary pronouns and a super sharp Black protagonist capable of confronting and dismantling the subtle and not-so-subtle racism she consistently encounters in a state with roots that were once deeply intertwined with those of the Confederate South.
Reeling with grief in the wake of her mother’s death, Bree arrives at Chapel Hill as a high school student, feeling both nervous about and grateful for the fact that she was accepted into a rigorous high-school-but-make-it-college program. She discovers a secret society of students who are descended from King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table - I know - and can’t shake the gut feeling that the Order’s governing body of Regents had something evil to do with her mother’s death.
Enter Nick, who, aside from being classic hero handsome, is kind, funny, perceptive, and...descended from King Arthur himself. Though the Order shaped his childhood from the moment he was born in ways that affected him meeentalllly (thanks Tiktok), Nick agrees to help Bree infiltrate the Order in the hopes of finding out what really happened to her mom.
But as this larger picture forms overhead, we get a close-up, magnified look at the jagged and unpredictable and angry edges of grief. Of not just what racism looks like in 21st century America, but why and how it’s alive. What feeds it. Legendborn is about where the blood is buried.
This book is funny, adorable, angry, heartbroken, and hopeful. Bree is incredible. The romance is electric, charged, heavy. The writing is mesmerizing. Awake. I’m a big fan and can’t WAIT for book 2.

Never apologize for how you feel. No one can control how they feel. The sun doesn’t apologize for being the sun. The rain doesn’t say sorry for falling. Feelings just are.

There's peace and tranquility, and underneath all that, there's an ocean of pain, an abysm of screams, a shattered and wounded soul. I have inside of me an ache for something real. My numb heart desires a pure and raw moment of freedom. Wild but mine. All mine. Only mine.

Barebones (Part 2/?)
It's winter; it's December; you shiver beneath
Umpteen layers of extra-small sweaters and you
Wear scarves so well that almost no one can tell
You're constantly under the weather. No one can
See the noose you've leashed 'round all of these
Insecurities; how you'd be free if you could stop
Seeing the calories as enemies.
