tbh? no one gets the fact that I need Nice Sounds In My Ears like dodie. There are other musicians whose lyrics I like equally but like. She gets that when you wake up you don't want to hear an excess of sounds you want to hear quite specific sounds like someone's voice singing a nice tune at a medium volume with light instrumentals in the background

When (Dodie)
Sure, I'll live in the moment/But I'm never happy here/I'm surrounded by greener looking time/Am I the only one wishing life away?/Never caught up in the moment/Busy begging the past to stay/Memories painted with much brighter ink/They tell me I loved, teach me how to think
"It’s about looking back on your youth and all of the missed opportunities and things you wish you could return to, so the lyrics definitely punch you in the gut. And the floatiness of the version on the Build A Problem album definitely adds to the nostalgic vibes."
Ode to the Mets (The Strokes)
Listen one time, it's not the truth/It's just a story I tell to you/Easy to say, easy to do/But it's not easy, well, maybe for you/Hope that you find it, hope that it's good/Hope that you read it, think that you should/Cuts you some slack as he sits back/Sizes you up, plans his attack
"If you haven't gotten any entries for this one yet I'd be very suprised. Very personal reasons why it fucks me up so so bad so I won't detail them here but!! It's funny that like 40% of the strokes tag is just ppl posting lyrics from this song with crying and sobbing and sobbing and crying drawing memes."

4. top 5 albums at the moment - build a problem by dodie - rubber soul by the beatles - guts by olivia rodrigo - bewitched by laufey - magic nights: saigon surf, twist & soul by phuong tam
13. 3 songs that make you energetic - this hell by rina sawayama - bianca stratford by bb bean - voulez-vous by abba
56. tell me something, anything, personal about you and a song/band/album - i got into the beatles bc of a mistake. basically, i was singing highway to hell and then my brother was like dude that's not how highway to hell goes, you're just singing to the tune of a hard day's night. so i listened to the entire album of a hard day's night and i became obsessed

moment of appreciation for the absolute fucking devastation of the fact that When appears on Build a Problem - 5 years later. the fact that it isn’t the same recording slapped onto a new album, it’s recorded softer, in such a hopeless way. showing the listener that she’s STILL asking when. me too dodie

hi luvvy, 3, 11, and 13 for hold me like you mean it, pls! xoxo
clare!!! hi hello!!!! thank you for this xx
[ alright. so the thing with this fic is..... i was quietly hoping no one would choose it just because... it's definitely not my best work lol. so, let me preface all of this by saying: this was the second fic i had ever written in my life last year, and is thus full of things i would completely change if i were to rewrite it today. i won't hate on past-liv completely since i was only just beginning, but please do know it honestly does not reflect how i would write today lol. also pls don't go back and read it save yourself ]
3: What’s your favorite line of narration?
i had to suffer through 8k just now, cringing at every past word i ever wrote to find these lines. not perfect, but they did stand out to me a bit reading back!
(Plus, they’re still not friends, and yet not lovers. He wonders if Lily wants to be either.)
and this line:
He’s never been good at them, words, but he hopes she hears his I love you; his I always have; his I always will.
11: What do you like best about this fic?
i think i like the premise of this fic more than anything. like, i really enjoy the idea of a fwb situation that's caused by trying to heal another's heartache which thus brings about all sorts of feelings of confusion and frustration!
13: What music did you listen to, if any, to get in the mood for writing this story? Or if you didn’t listen to anything, what do you think readers should listen to to accompany us while reading?
dodie's Four Tequillas Down is what inspired this fic, so i definitely incorporated the feel i got from that song, as well as nearly every other song on her album Build A Problem, to write this story!
fic q’s!

olive!!! babe!!! how r u???? i'm currently rereading the blood of olympus (& realizing i have a fat crush on jason. whoops.) & thinking of u!! ig i have been living under a rock, but my fyp has been showing me content for it, but-- any thoughts on the new live action atla show?? (also, music recs! five seconds flat by lizzie mcalpine is the most gorgeous album i have listened to in such a long time? her writing is so refreshing, and reminds me of ur writing!! build a problem by dodie also has some bangers in it, that i feel u would a d o r e) anyways ily, and i hope u r having a great weekend! <33
omg, cass!!!!!!! where have you been???? i've been doing alright for myself, how are you? and lol, i was also thinking of finally picking up and finishing the percy jackson franchise, but i have a long list of books to read, and a schedule that won't let me get to them until december, sdghjhgds. i hope you enjoy blood of olympus and, from what i have gathered about jason from Tumblr Osmosis, he is a good one to have a crush on. i support that decision, lololol.
and okay,,,, so i have not heard much about the atla live-action other than the fact that the story is going to take some.... ~artistic liberties~ with the plot, and honestly? no offense, but i'd rather something else. like the comic being animated, or at atla-verse show that focuses on other avatars rather than rehashing the story we already know and love. however!!!! that being said!!!!! from what i have seen of the casting choices, it seems like there's some great choices and i'm interested to see what they do with it! i'm excited for all the young actors to have such a cool opportunity, and my sister and i already have plans to tune in.
and i will definitely have to check out that album! you and lindsay always give the best music recs, and i think that's rather neat of the both of you. ily too and hope you have a wonderful week!

tagged by proxy by @rabdoidal for a music shuffle meme, and I just got my ye olde ipod classic working again, so let's slap it on
Till Death - Japanese Breakfast "Soft Sounds from Another Planet" is a no-skip album for me. Till Death has such a lovely key change towards the end, a lower shift, and just lovely brass. Your voice in the night, sing me to sleep, soothe this insomnia
Green Light - Lorde A song I played a LOT when I was a junior in college. All of "Melodrama", really. This one has a really good build to it, though I feel like I've outgrown it. Oh honey, I'll come get my things, but I can't let go
Sorry - dodie What you have to understand about the second half of "Build A Problem" is that it's meant to be listened to in one fell swoop. The songs intentionally lead into and out of each other. It always jars me when I hit Sorry without it being followed by When. It is a beautiful little song, though. Let me go back, show me the eyes, so I'd really know just what it looks like, there was the end I couldn't find, found too late
Wrecking Ball - Mother Mother With the exception of Body, I wasn't on the Mother Mother train until a few years ago (Body I jammed to in high school). The lyrics are fine, but what really makes this one for me is the instrumentation. It takes a dedicated hand to put it through the wall
Never Let Me Go (Live) [MTV Unplugged] - Florence + the Machine While I've been on board with everything FATM has done since, and including, "Ceremonials", this song especially holds my heart in its watery grip. The live version, stripped down, lets the vocals shine. And the crashes are heaven for a sinner like me, but the arms of the ocean delivered me
Everything Will Be Alright - The Killers For personal reasons, I have a hard time listening to this album as a whole (and what an album to have to miss out on!) but, of all of the songs that could come up from this album, I'm glad it's this one for the lyrics. That said, I don't really love this song anyway? And I won't forget you, at least I'll try and run and run tonight
Symphony - Maggie Rogers I really like the way Maggie has stepped into herself with her second full album. Symphony is, I think, a slept-on song from the album that opens with so many bangers. The lyrics are fine, but this song really shines with the instrumentals. Can you live like nothing's left? Forget your emptiness, take a breath
Between the Lines - Sara Bareilles I have loved this song since middle school. I tried to learn it on piano, back in my "I want to learn piano" days. Sara Bareilles has such a wonderful command of melody, and a killer voice. And I could have sworn I'd heard him say it ten thousand times, oh, if only I'd been listening
Moon Song - Phoebe Bridgers My favorite song off of "Punisher". I love how Phoebe will build a metaphor and bring the words back around to it in the end of the song. When you saw the dead little bird, you started crying, but you know the killer doesn't understand.
Runaway - Penelope Scott From one of her newest releases, it's a slightly mean-spirited, self-demeaning, delightfully-accompanied romp about putting yourself aside to love someone else. It's all fucked until it isn't, it's all bullshit til you miss them
anyway, anyone who sees this and wants to, go for it! ten songs, shuffled, from your music library/liked songs/whatever. tag me if you do? I want to read it.

Visual Albums
I have always been interested in an artists choice to create a visual album. Typically, a visual album consists of a film, dance or other visual art in order to accompany a music album. Many artists have chosen to do this, such as Beyoncé with her 17 music videos for her self titled album. Singer-songwriter Dodie made a 30 minute film for her album ‘Build A Problem’ , and my personal favourite, Volcano and their visual music.
Volcano has accompanied their songs with music videos consisting of dancers (the same in each video), which tells a story. This story is developed as we reach the next video, with them typically beginning and ending with a more story based aspect, and the bulk of it showing the dancers telling a story through their dance. Whilst I am not incorporating dance in my music video, the idea of following the narrative of a song or the album as a whole is appealing to me as it adopts a more typical film approach. I aim to incorporate my love of visual albums in my own project, listening to the song and album as a whole when creating the mv. This would allow me to tell the story of a character in the song, as opposed to the typical visuals of a band or singer playing instruments and singing the song; I want to create a narrative for my song ‘American Sports’.

1, 7, and/or 30 for the ask thing?😁
Hiiii :))) I kinda started answering these like it's my english discussion board, so it's long
1. “If someone wanted to really understand you, what would they read, watch, and listen to?”
This one is giving me an identity crisis because I've never had a strong sense of self, but here we go. These might just be things I feel in my soul.
Reading- the Penderwicks series by Jeanne Birdsall, Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard by Rick Riordan, (I'm a bit embaressed to say this one) Young and Beautiful by velvetoscar (yes the fanfic)
Watching- Secret of Kells, Tangled, Song of the Sea, Spirited Away, Sense and Sensibility, Star Wars Rebels, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Good Omens
Listening-
Graceland Too- Phoebe Bridgers
From God's Perspective- Bo Burnham
Come With Me- Chxrlotte
I'm Not Angry Anymore- Paramore
Air So Sweet- Dodie (actually the whole build a problem album i think)
New Soul- Yael Naim
Everybody- Ingrid Michaelson
You'll Understand When You're Older and also It's All Futile It's All Pointless- Lovejoy
Also like the albums Fine Line by Harry Styles, Immaturing by Addison Grace, and any of my playlists (my spotify)
7. “Do you care about your ethnicity?”
I think it’s weird for me because I’m adopted. I don’t feel connected to any family or wherever I came from. I’ve kinda only ever felt connected to things that I have memories of. Like I’ve always felt connected to Ireland, but it’s not because I’m from Northern European descent, but because my first memories were from when I lived there.
Short answer not really lol
30. “Pick one of your favorite quotes.”
The only one that's coming to mind right now is part of this one paragraph in the Les Misérables translated by Julie Rose.
"'I come from the deep sea,' says the fish. 'I was a rose,' says the perfume. 'I loved you,' says the corpse."
For some reason it's stuck with me ever since I read it.
Anyway yeah :) I spent way more time on this than was necessary

okay I don't know musical words or anything but,, the difference between when (intertwined version) and when (bap version) is so,, beautiful yet heartbreaking?
like I saw someone on twitter saying that the intertwined version is more hopeful and bap is more idk,, resigned and sad and they're so right?? like differences in the strings, the way intertwined when has so many more strings that the absence of them in bap version really makes it stand out? and it's almost like as time has gone on she's lost the hope of getting that feeling of being sixteen back she's just accepted it and that absence of strings makes the song so much quieter and sadder like a funeral for those memories and feelings. it feels so much older and sadder like it brings a sense of wisdom from the song while the older version was hoping she'd get those feelings back she's now just realised she won't? and even in the tone of the music? like again I don't know musical words but bap version is so much slower and quieter and softer than intertwined version which just changes the whole feel of the song? and the way the stings only comes in at the end and there's so many of them? idk it feels almost like acceptance of not feeling how she wants to but also the amount of strings feels like a sort of support? like friends or people who care for her being there for her and she'll get through this while intertwined version feels so much more idk, alone?
aLSO just the change in her voice and the way this whole album is produced really shows how she's grown as an artist and this is by far her best release yet I'm so amazed
