Post ĉi historia priskribo kiun ŝatis mi skribi, jen ni iru al la komentoj.

La ŝajnsinonimaro

Mi eĉ nomis ĉi tian aferon pro ĝia ofteco. La ŝajn- komence estas pro tio ke, eĉ se diras la libro ke x = y, ne vere ke ambaŭ vortoj tute interŝanĝeblaj estas. Ĉar tute ne eblas ekscii la malsamecon per la libro nur, jen mi iris serĉi denove. Sed, ĉi-foje, ion alian mi decidis fari: anstataŭ per Guglo fari la serĉadon, mi decidis demandi al ChatGPT. Kaj, surprize, ĝi donis senchavan klarigon.

Jen la sinonimoj kun klarigo de malsameco:

mundus = purus - "mundus" al fizikaĵo rilatas, "purus", al abstraktaĵo

candidus = albus - "candidus" estas por mencii la brilecon kaj fortecon de io, dum "albus" estas nur pri la koloro mem, vere kiel diri "blanko" simple.

vestis = vestimenta - "vestis" estas individua vestaĵo, dum "vestimenta" estas kostumo, la aro da vestaĵo uzata

cruor = sanguis - "cruor" rilatas al sangverŝo, dum "sanguis", al sango fluanta en la vejnoj

Ĉiu priskribo perfekte kongruis kun la libra kunteksto.

Ankaŭ estas la verbo "aio", uzita kie mi pensus ke uzitus "dico". ChatGPT diras ke "aio" uzatas por mencii ekzaktajn vortojn ies, dum "dico" estas io pli ĝenerala, kiel verbo nia "diri", mi kredas. Kaj denove ĉi tio kongruis perfekte kun la libra situacio, kie la verbo "aio" uzitas kiam Emiliino demandas Julion kion li ĵus diris, kaj li respondas ripetante la ĵusdiraĵon.

Tamen, kio pri "inquit", kiun estas sintakse uzita kiel "aio"? Ĉi-foje donas ChatGPT ne tiel fidindan respondon, sed ankoraŭ kredeblan, ke ambaŭ signifas la samon, sed ke "inquit" estas pli formala kaj literatura.

Ni, la grundanoj

Legante la apudnotojn, mi vidas "humus", kaj tuj rimarkis similecon kun "humanus", sed samtempe pensante ke povas esti falsamiko, ĉar "humus" signifas "tero, grundo". Serĉante, mi vidas la mirindaĵon: "humanus" efektive havas la sufikson -anus, kunigita al la radiko hum-. "Humanus" do signifas "tiu kiu apartenas, devenas de la grundo". "Humanus" signifas "grundano, terano". Kiel bele!

Mi trovis tion tiel interesa, ĉar tuj mi faris ligon kun kion la Biblio diras pri kiel homo estis kreita. Ankaŭ venis enmensen ke en greka mitologia ankaŭ tiel kreiĝis homo. Kaj tiam mi pensis: kiom forta estis tiu penso, kredo, por ke oni eĉ aludis al si mem kiel "iu devenanta de la tero"? Ĉiam mirindas la fakto ke estas kelkaj ĉiamĉeestantaj trajtoj en ĉiu, au preskaŭ ĉiu, religio. Estas unu vero tie.

Krome, mi eksciis poste ke la nomo Adamo signifas la samon! Mirinde.

Nu, montriĝas ke mi post ĉi tiu afiŝo eksciis ke "humanus" devenas fakte de "homo + -anus"... kio estis vere seniluziiga. Mi nun scivolas de kie mi prenis tiun informon ke la vorto venis de "humus". Mi nun nur esperas ke la etimologiuloj misdiris kaj "humanus" vere venas de "humus", kiom ajn neverŝajne estas tio. Ĉiuokaze, mia miro pri la etimologio de "Adamo" restas.

As a self taught latin language person I can't in good conscience recommend duolingo latin at all. It's really not good. Go for lingua latina per se illustrata instead

It's funny that no matter the community there's always some kind of beef or drama. I've been studying Latin for almost 3 years now and frequent the Latin subreddit. I'm sorry you have to find out that I use Reddit like this. But seriously speaking that subreddit has been a great resource in my learning and I've learned a lot through it.

But sadly not even a small niche community like that is drama free. It's a bit of a weird place full of hobbyist and genuine Latinists and scholars. There's a lot of fighting between people who like the grammar translation method of learning Latin, and some who advocate comprehensive input. And the fights can get pretty heated, ultimately ending in snarky replies or straight up insults. People take their Latin learning very seriously. More rambling below.

I learned Latin through a combination method, I did get the Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata books, but I also studied and read up a lot about grammar. Latintutorial on Youtube was a big help! But most of my learning has been through various videos on youtube and reading a lot. That's what comprehensible input is, you just gotta interact with the language as much as possible. Grammar translation from what I get isn't exactly reading it's like solving a puzzle trying to identify each word and their form. That's how Latin has been learned and taught in the past few hundred years. No one seems to care about Latin as a language.

I've seen some extreme opinions that since Latin is dead you shouldn't care about how it's pronounced or its fine details, doing that is cringe and you're a larping nerd. A couple weeks back I saw a guy insulting anyone who wanted to speak Latin "properly", saying you're a pretentious twat if you roll your R's. And today I saw people getting heated up about macrons. Macrons mark long vowels and are important especially when you start out Latin. For example: malum and malum. Do you know the difference? If so where does the long vowel go? What are the two words? Maybe the malum malum example is too stereotypical, but it makes the point. In Latin if you see two identical words the difference between them will always be the long vowel somewhere, but if you don't use macrons how'd you know?

I do agree that once you know Latin well enough macrons aren't necessary anymore. Except with new words I guess. Finnish makes long vowels easy because they're always marked by two back to back vowels. The difference between tuli (fire) and tuuli (wind). Alright that's my Latin ramble, I'm not trying to make any point. People are weird, no matter what community they're a part of. It is what it is!

Have you ever tried to learn Latin? If so, how did it go?

I've completed the Latin Duolingo and bought a book about Latin for beginners and let me tell you there's always so much more to understand. I can barely understand most spoken Latin audio files.

Maybe if I buy Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata I'll do better...? Scorpio Martianus and Legentibus has a lot of useful resources.

probably? i wouldn't know from experience because i learnt it at school. but i did just get a lot of potentially useful results by googling "self study latin". one that came up a few times was the lingua latina per se illustrata course / textbooks which i have heard good things about / have read a tiny bit of and thought was cool :-)

A brief update on my Classics studies. In my Latin studies in 2022 I am working my way through Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata and am nearing the far edge of the middle of Pars I. I can reasonably recognize and parse sentences in present and future tenses in the indicative mood and active voice and recognize other moods and tenses correctly about 65 to 70 percent of the time. Probably using those words incorrectly but idc too much right now. I’ll fix that later. In 1898 I am using Robert Leighton’s Latin Lessons in conjunction with Allen and Greenough’s New Latin Grammar (about 5 years too early to be using the New Latin Grammar - first published in 1903 - but I really couldn’t be arsed to bind my own copy of an earlier edition and I couldn’t find a reasonably decent antique copy online of any earlier edition). I supplement with various readers while in character.

For Greek in 2022 I go between the JACT’s Reading Greek books and Hansen & Quinn’s Greek: An Intensive Course, only because I want the more compact exercises in H&Q sometimes and sometimes I just want to read something comprehensible. In 1898 I am working my way through John Williams White’s First Greek Lessons in conjunction with Goodwin’s 1892 expanded Greek Grammar. I chose White’s lesson book because I like the structure and I found an answer key for it that was published in the 1880s so I can have both the textbook and key out and around at the village. White’s text and key I printed and bound myself and I must say I’m rather proud of them, though the cover I placed on the text is anachronistic (it’s about 30 years too late for wrappers like the one I constructed to be used on a textbook, but I wanted to do it and it matches the cover I put on the key quite nicely). I am making nice progress with vocabulary and grammar in Greek, a touch faster than I expected to. I can easily produce simple constructions in the indicative mood in the present, imperfect, and future tenses as well as first and second declension nouns and third on occasion when my brain decides it will work. I will say that the sheer existence of The Article makes life much, much easier in Greek - at least for me.

In any case, I am thoroughly enjoying the study and eagerly await when it will actually get difficult. Right now it all is very much memorizing constructions which is less difficulty and more just…like…tedium isn’t the right word but it has a similar weight. Idk. I’m not regretting this project yet which is the important thing, and the syntax study is I think helping my Japanese studies, too, which is weird but welcomed.

one year ago today my grandfather died. while we waited our turn to say goodbye, i was huddled around a copy of the lingua latina per se illustrata with my older and younger sister trying to teach them latin and provide a brief distraction from what we knew would happen as soon as we left that room.

the weight of grief has become easier to bear over the last year, but lately i worry my back is breaking.

I had a bad week, but I’m not giving up. Last Thursday, I watched a Zoom seminar on “translating antiquity” from the university I plan on going to this fall. Not exactly studying, but it was fascinating to listen to people who are translators or have translated occasionally, and their different perspectives. Today marks my new first day of studying. I listened to an Acta Diurna and then chapter 3 of Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata + adjoined videos, all by ScorpioMartianus on Youtube. Upon relistening to the Acta Diurna video, I registered a lot more words than the first time. I’m going to give it a third try tomorrow and possibly try to write down what I hear.
