Every single one of my fictional crushes would be covered in bite marks btw. I’d have to be muzzled 70% of the time bc biting is my love language. I’d be such a fucking menace. Especially the more muscular ones they literally have built in chew toys

ooooo! may i request a hc where waterbender beifong meets her dad?!
a/n: this has been in my drafts forever i am so sorry anon but hopefully you enjoy!
~based on these hc’s~
Tumblr media
After countless arguments and packed bags and trips to Air Temple Island, you and your mother came to the agreement that you could seek out your father, if that was what you wanted, once you became an adult
When your eighteenth birthday comes and goes Lin assumes you’ve given up on your dream to meet your father and accepted the fact that the chances of finding the man were slim to none
Yet when she comes into your room one day to ask if you’d like to join her for lunch she finds your bags packed and your father’s portrait resting on your desk much to her dismay
“What the flameo is going on here?” She muses, doing her best to keep her annoyance at bay.
“You said when I was eighteen I could try to find my dad, so that’s what I’m doing,” you state matter of factly. “Kya’s going to be here soon to take me back to the south.”
“Kya?” Lin retorts. “Why Kya?”
“Well I figured I’d start my search in the South considering dad is from the water tribe, and if I don’t find anything there I’ll go to the north.”
“I think you should take Mako. I’d feel better if you did.”
“I’d rather not introduce my boyfriend to my dad on the same day I introduce myself to my dad,” you note with a slight laugh. “I’ll be okay, mom.”
“Alright,” Lin finally sighs. “You’re not a little girl anymore, I can’t tell you what to do. But be careful out there, I have no idea what your father has been up to all these years and I’d hate to see you get hurt.”
She lets you go with an affectionate ruffle of your hair and a firm side hug— and by sneaking sweet buns into your bag when you aren’t looking— and a request of greetings for Kya before sending you off on your way
You’re anxious the entire time it takes you to reach the South, but with Kya’s comforting presence and helpful meditation sessions you’re able to stand the journey
You have nothing to go off of for your search other than the old outdated portrait your mother had kept of him, but you’re able to work with what you have
Kya doesn’t recognize the man, but she suggests asking the locals for information
You spend hours speaking to countless water tribe members asking if they know the man from the picture, but every time you come up empty handed
It’s frustrating and emotionally grueling work, and a part of you starts to wonder if all this effort is really worth it for a man you’ve never met
Would he even want to see you? You’d been alive for eighteen years and he never once thought to look for you. Did he even know you existed? Did he want to?
You’re so engrossed in your thoughts that you don’t notice the little girl that runs your way
She collides harshly into your legs, almost causing you to topple over into the snow, and though you immediately open your mouth with the intent to yell at her you bite your tongue at the sight of the child who can’t be any older than six
Her eyes are a beautiful blue and her hair is long and thick, but she shares your nose and your lips. It almost looks as if she could be related to you, and the realization fills you with dread and nausea
“Watch where you’re going,” you mutter harshly before quickly stomping off. Your original patience for her wears thin once you put the pieces together, and you feel sick to your stomach
She didn’t do anything wrong, you know that, but you can’t help the anger and the hurt and the resentment that begin to course through you
If your suspicions are correct, then it seems your father already has a daughter of his own
It was a mistake coming here, and as much as it killed you to admit it, Lin was right
You’re about to head back and search for Kya when a hand lands on your shoulder to stop you
Immediately you’re on the defensive, grabbing the person’s wrist and using all of your strength to yank them over your shoulder and throw them onto their back into the snow in front of you
“What do you want?!” You scowl only to immediately freeze at the sight of the man in front of you
Though he looks older than the picture with graying hair and wrinkes, there’s no denying the resemblance
“You’re a strong one aren’t you,” he says with a laugh to mask the groan that leaves him as he picks himself up off the ground
“I am so sorry, sir,” you splutter apologetically, “it was instinct and I-“
“Is this yours?” He interrupts you, holding out the photograph. Your stomach drops as your reach into your pocket and find that the picture is missing. You must have dropped it earlier when the little girl ran into you
You stand there, mouth agape and struggling to find the right words. Here is the man you’ve been wondering about all your life, but now that he’s right in front of you you have no idea what to do
“I… I’m holding it for a friend,” you lie, internally screaming at yourself for doing so
“I see. May I ask who that friend is?”
“…Lin Beifong. Do you know her?”
His eyes widen with recognition and a second emotion you can’t quite decipher, but it’s starting to make you regret ever speaking to him
“I do, though I haven’t heard that name in years.”
“Yeah, well, you’re not missing out on much,” you mumble quietly
“You know, you remind me of her,” he says much to your dismay. The last thing you want to be told is that you’re like your mother. Does he know that it’s because you are her daughter?
“I get that a lot.”
“You don’t look like you’re from around here. Do you have family here?”
“…No. I don’t.”
“Well, would you like to join my family and I for dinner? A friend of Lin’s is a friend of mine,” he offers warmly which surprises you. You were sure he hated your mother and wanted nothing to do with her. After all, according to her they didn’t exactly end on the best terms
You consider the offer, your eyes analyzing his kind features and friendly smile. But then your gaze drifts, and your sight lands on the little girl just a few feet away staring straight at you. She has your nose and your mouth. She has your father.
“Thank you, but I need to get going,” is all you say
And you don’t give him a chance to reply as you head back towards Kya’s home
This was a waste of time

*gasping in lesbian* LIN BEIFONG???
I DEMAND (read: politely request) more please! Maybe like the reader and her are have an age gap (significantish maybe? Like R is thirty and Lin is fifty?) and Lin just gets tired of people hitting on her girl and gets jealous and insecure, but R always reassures her and is actually so proud to be hers. Maybe Lin gets so upset one time that she tries to break up with her, but R might as well already be considered a Beifong since she’s too stubborn to believe it. So, she pulls a whole: “If you can look me in the eye and tell me you don’t want me anymore, then I’ll walk out of here right now and never bother you again.” Lin can’t, so R just reassured her and loves her through the night.
Tumblr media
A/N: Lin Beifong is the Queen of Lesbians and no one will convince me otherwise, okay? This woman DOES something primal to me. Her ARMS and HANDS (i know they're rough and calloused and scarred and so, so skilled), her attitude, her VOICE, my god 💕💕💕 thank you, 🍇Anon (it's what I'm naming you, because I always thought Lin likes fresh fruits and vegetables and has a rooftop garden where she grows them)
You're the one who chased Lin in this situation.
I mean, it was love at first fight (because you're JUST as fiery and stubborn and you do bicker and banter, it's pretty much affection/foreplay for the two of you), yeah, but the age gap kept her from making a move. So you chased her and she fell even more in love, the two of you so, so happy.
That didn't stop the stares.
The whispers, the gossip, and, god, so many people hit on you, often not realizing that the two of you were even together.
"Care for a dance, honey?"
"Oh, I don't think my girlfriend would like that too much, you know..."
"I don't see a girlfriend."
"Turn around."
But it's going to get to her and, eventually, Lin breaks beneath the pressure. Maybe she IS too old for you and maybe you are too different (the sunshine to her storm cloud, the sugar to her spice) and Lin will try to end things...she expected a fight, maybe, perhaps some crying (oh, she hates to see you cry) but your reaction still manages to surprise her.
"No."
"N...no? What do you mean no??"
You toughen up, arms crossed as you look up at her (size difference, size difference, Lin is taller then you and she sort of loves that).
"I know why you're doing this, Lin, and i won't stand for it. Everyone talks about us and you know what? I don't care! I don't give a damn about anybody else but you, I love you and that's that," you snap, stubbornly yet sweetly. "So, if you can look me in the eye and tell me you don’t want me anymore, then I’ll walk out of here right now and never bother you again. But if you can't, than I'm not going anywhere."
She can't do it.
Lin can't bring herself to look at you and say it, not when it had been so hard to do that first time around. She breaks, tears beginning to well, and you go to her at once.
That's one of the things she loves about you...
She can be vulnerable with you, rant and cry and rave as much as she needs. Lin grew up struggling to fully accept and express her emotions but you, you accept them wholeheartedly.
And that's something of a miracle with her.
You spend all night kissing and cuddling and talking things out and, by the end of it, the incident that should have broken you apart only brought you closer together. Needless to say, Lin stops caring what anyone else has to say after this.
And you get married, like, a month later 💚💗

Summary: You've had feelings for Lin forever, but it takes her until someone else notices you for her to realize that she feels exactly the same way about you.
Author's Note: Repost from my old account! Playing catch-up with this new Tumblr account.
Legend of Korra Masterlist. | Navigation. | Requests Closed!
Tumblr media
When there was an urgent call about a disturbance at the Republic City Rift, there were plenty of people Lin figured would be there: Korra, the Airbenders, the guy who claimed to own the land - the list could go on. She wasn't expecting the Kyoshi Warriors, though.
She wasn't expecting you, hog-monkey-tying the latest leader of the Triple Threat Triad. Maybe most people would have struggled to recognize one person among the other green-clad warriors in water-resistant face paint, but as soon as she saw the familiar uniforms, Lin's eyes darted straight to your unique headdress. She gravitated towards you, trying to tell herself it was solely because of the Triple Threat you were gagging with a green sash to shut him up.
Really, though, she was glad to see a familiar face, one without a complicated history. You were honest, a reliable friend, a devoted warrior who had her own priorities and life, and you were always pleasant to boot, even in Lin's grizzlier moments. Sure, she was closer with Suyin and there were more good memories with Tenzin and Pema as her friends now, but everything with you had always been so easy. You and her went together like cherry-berry lemonade and watermelon juice.
"Chief Beifong," you said cheerfully as you kept the delinquent squirming beneath you still by pressing his shoulder blade firmly to the ground with your boot. "What a lovely surprise seeing you here."
"I think the bigger surprise is seeing you," she chuckled, looking around at your fellow Warriors dragging the other Triple Threats to police custody. After you hoisted the kid previously under your boot up, she took hold of him. "Is Kyoshi Island safe without you all to protect it?"
"It's certainly safer than this rift without us here."
Lin put her free hand on her hip as she looked around at the airbenders who'd been caught up in the fight while protecting the rift. A couple were injured, but nothing too bad. "And just how is the rift unsafe?"
"Izumi's kid--- Iroh--- telegraphed a message about how Raiko is considering calling in the United Forces to stop the Air Nation from preventing people like Wonyong Keum from claiming the land and turning it into a tourist attraction."
"Great," she said flatly, gesturing for you to follow her over to put the Triple Threat in the back of one of the cars with his other tied-up buddies. "Just what we need. The army. Thanks for coming to help the airbenders. I would join you, but the turf wars all over the city ever since Kuvira's invasion have gotten increasingly worse."
You nodded in understanding as she locked up the car. "It's fine. Maybe when all this is over, we could get dinner and catch up before I head back to the island."
She smiled at the suggestion and nodded, replying, "I'll try to find the time for it. It's good to see you."
"Good to see you, too." Your eyes shone with something Lin couldn't quite place, and you looked like you might have hugged her the way you always did whenever you saw Lin for the first time in a while. "Erm, I---"
"(Y/n)!" Kya called. When you and Lin turned to see her approaching you both, she grinned. "Oh, spirits. I thought that was you!"
You tossed your arms around her in a quick hug. "Hey, Kya! Haven't seen you forever."
Lin furrowed her eyebrows at how easily embrace had come with Kya but not with her. she weighed whether she wanted to ask you what was wrong. Usually, you were so comfortable with her, she'd normally be nearly knocked off her feet in an embrace with a remark about how long it had been since the two of you had seen each other in person. You both wrote letters to each other after going your own ways in life, so it wasn't like the two of you hadn't had any contact in years. While you never mentioned or indicated that something was off between the two of you, she couldn't help but feel some kind of distance stuck between you both.
Maybe her friendship with you wasn't as easy as she thought. She felt like a third wheel as you and Kya spoke.
"And yet you haven't aged a day," Kya replied, blue eyes looking up and down your figure.
Smiling back, you rolled your eyes playfully. "It's just the face paint."
"Please, you look great. Are you fifty or thirty? I can't tell. You know, I think it's so unfair that Tenzin and Bumi haven't grayed a bit, and yet I already look like an old lady."
At that, Lin cleared her throat. "So gray hair makes us look like old ladies?"
While Kya's eyes widened with a spark of worry that she offended Lin, you spoke up, "I think it makes you look dignified. Who's going to take someone who looks like a kid seriously? Besides, you're both powerful benders who could kick anyone's ass, and that's hot."
"Oh, really?" Smirking, Kya lightly rested her hand on your forearm and suggested, "I have to go help provide first aid, but maybe later, you can help me out and tell me exactly what you think is so hot about it." You mirrored her half-smile and agreed. Her fingers trailed down your arm as she went, and she nodded to Lin. "See you around, Lin."
When you turned back to Lin, your expression suddenly seemed strained and you took a step back. "I should go and help take care of the injuries. See you around?"
"Definitely," Lin nodded in agreement, even though she wanted to ask you what was wrong. You had initially been so happy to see her, but then you pulled back - even before Kya showed up.
But you had walked off and she had a job to do, so there wasn't time. She still looked back in your direction before she went, though. As you'd said, you went to assist with first aid. Suddenly an easy smile was back on your lips, and Kya was grinning along with you like she was your best friend, not Lin. There was none of the awkwardness or strain that you'd had in your expression with Lin. For some reason, that made her chest tight.
Tumblr media
"Maybe we should use the fan first before starting off with the katana," you nervously suggested as Lin tied the blindfold behind her head.
Toph glared in your direction, her hands folded behind her back. "Lin can't learn seismic sense by you going easy on her. Besides, she's already had plenty of practices feeling the ground. This test is definitive. If you're too scared, I can just ask Suki instead."
You swallowed thickly. Suki wasn't inhuman, but she was leagues ahead of you with weapons. Even if she held back on Lin, you worried your friend would be hurt.
"No need, Chief Beifong," you said in as steady a voice as you could manage.
Toph stepped back and said, "Begin."
You took a step forward, hoping Lin felt that on the ground. If she did, you didn't have any indication because she didn't move. Still, you slashed forward with the katana from behind her, from a high enough point and with a low enough amount of force that it wouldn't make contact with her, but you'd be lying if you said you didn't breath a sigh of relief at the fact that she immediately moved out of the way anyway and turned to face you.
Toph caught the hesitation in your stance, though. "(Y/n)! Do you want me to tell your master that you've been holding back in training?"
"No, Chief Beifong," you responded, going for Lin again.
This time, you were more confident in her ability to see you. She swerved and weaved out of the path of your sword like a boxer avoiding a stronger opponent to tire them out. The two of you skirted back and forth across the stone training floor, almost in some strange kind of dance. You wanted to grin with pride and congratulate Lin for how well she was doing, but if you lost your focus, you could hurt her. Besides, her mother wouldn't have appreciated you talking up Lin. So, you kept up doing your best and hoping Lin's best would be a perfect match for it. Your muscles were practically screaming for a rest by the time Toph called off the fighting.
Pulling off the blindfold, Lin asked, "So, Mother? Have I mastered seismic sense?"
Toph sniffed before the corners of her mouth tugged upwards. "Well, I'd say you're pretty good. A right sight better than most of the recruits I've been training recently. Just don't slack in your practice; keep your skills active. Rest for today, though."
You and Lin exchanged excited grins as you both left the training room and headed to Lin's room. Once you were out of Toph's earshot, you lightly shoved at Lin's shoulder. "You did so well!"
"Yeah, but 'pretty good' isn't perfect," Lin replied, her expression darkening slightly. "I still have a long way to go."
"I don't think it's that long. I mean, we're talking about Toph here. The fact that she complimented where you are now is extremely impressive."
Closing the door to her room behind the both of you, Lin moved to sit next to you on her bed and reluctantly agreed, "Okay, okay. I have to admit, I wasn't expecting her to actually smile a little! That was surprising!"
"I bet you that was a smile of pride," you gushed. You reached forward to pinch her cheek the way old family members would do to you when remarking about how much you'd grown. "Her little Lin is getting to be such a good metal-bender!"
She squirmed away from your hand with a groan before she retaliated by pinching your cheek. You responded by going to tickle her, which threw her into a fit of giggles. The two of you tangled into a laughing, goofy mess on her bed within a few seconds, stopping only when you realized the position you were both in. She was kneeling over you, and you had been pushed back onto her bed, splayed out with humor dazzling in your eyes. Panting with exertion from both the earlier training and this spontaneous play-fight, she paused and swallowed thickly. You looked so pretty in that moment, even though you were about as physically exhausted as she was. She could just...
You pulled her down into a kiss before she could fully think to do the same, but she matched you in intensity as soon as she felt your lips on hers. It wasn't the first time the two of you had kissed. When you were younger kids curious about what's so great about all this kissing adults do?the two of you had exchanged a very quick, very chaste peck. But now, you and Lin were almost adults in your own right, and this kiss was far from quick and chaste. She wanted more, and from the way you sounded against her mouth, so did you.
Just as her hands started to wander to your waist, sharp knocks resounded through her room. The two of you broke apart faster than the pieces of a shattered window.
"(Y/n), Suki's here to take you to your next training session with the Kyoshi Warriors," Toph said through the door.
Lin sighed in relief as she relaxed the stiff posture she scrambled to sit up into when she first heard the knocking. "Oh, spirits above. The only good thing about a mom who gives too much space is that at least she knocks." She looked over at you and her relieved smile fell. "From one training to another. It's sad you have to go so soon."
You frowned too, nodding. "Yeah. I mean, I can stop by tomorrow if you're free...?"
"Sounds like a plan." She got up from the bed and walked with you, stopping at the door to whisper, "And by the way, I promise I won't tell anyone about..." She gestured to the bed and then between you and her.
Surprisingly, this seemed to trouble you, so she explained, "Because our parents are from the Earth Kingdom. They don't really approve of that in the Earth Kingdom, you know?"
"Right," you said, smiling understandingly. "I won't tell anyone either. I promise."
Tumblr media
Lin woke up from her dream slowly, the memory feeling as tender and nostalgic as any other from her youth. Before Suyin left, before Toph retired, before Tenzin broke up with her. Before Lin had completely wasted her youth on trying to please someone who didn't want to be catered to and pleased. Before Suki died and you took over the Kyoshi Warriors of her village in her stead, leaving little room for the two of you to stay as close as previously.
She wanted to hold the memory in her hands and cradle it close to her chest. There weren't many moments in her life for the years between that day and just a few years ago where she'd felt something substantial besides bitterness. Today, though, she could almost feel the same youthful joy she had as a teenager when she thought of you.
Sitting up, she opened the bottom drawer of her nightstand and rifled through its contents. C'mon, where is it? It's gotta be... There! She withdrew a picture of you, sent with one of your recent letters. You were sitting under a cherry blossom tree in light blue clothes, your hair in a casual style framing your face with no paint on your face. You weren't even looking at the camera. You never liked posing, couldn't even stand when other people did it. When she sent you a picture of herself in her metalbending uniform for the first time, you complained that it looked too deliberate. She had to admit, you looked better laughing at something off-camera than you could have ever looked putting on a grin and staring directly into the shot.
Spirits above, when was she the sentimental type?
With a shake of her head, she got a start onto her day. She set your picture down on her nightstand and went to get dressed for work.
The next few days were a bit of a blur; Bolin submitted a report on the Triple Threats' attack on the rift that, for some reason, included the detail that Korra and Asami were now dating. Lin hadn't known that, and she was kind of surprised, but she figured that if they were happy, it wasn't her business. She reminded Bolin to keep to protocol and only include pertinent details in his next report. He and Mako later tried to accuse Wonyong Keum of hiring the Triple Threats to attack the rift, but by no means was Lin going to risk bringing Keum in for questioning without evidence. From there, everything spiraled when Lin was given a bad tip about the Triple Threat warehouse, Triple Threats attacked the police depot and freed Tokuga and the other members, and Asami was swiftly kidnapped.
Things weren't easy for you either; the Air Nation's peaceful protest did indeed lead to the United Forces being summoned. However, you and your Warriors voluntarily shielded them, having taken off your uniforms and weapons to keep the nature of the protest peaceful. It also helped that Zhu Li and Varrick came to show that Varrick Industries supported the protest. General Iroh certainly wasn't going to attack peaceful protesters to begin with, but it would be foolish for the president to order any attack after that, and equally foolish for any of his soldiers to risk mutiny. Whatever the reasoning, no one with half a brain could justify harming peaceful protesters and the leaders of a prominent business and the new generation of a long-thought-extinct-culture and the members of an elite group of female warriors (one of whom had a long and storied friendship with Fire Lord Izumi and Republic City's Police Chief). Still, having the army surrounding your small group was a lot of stress for all of you. And then everybody had to evacuate due to a threat of poison gas.
When all was said and done, she wanted to seek you out and ask you to that dinner you'd suggested... except that before she got to, Varrick and Zhu Li had invited everybody - the airbenders, the Kyoshi Warriors, Korra, Asami, Bolin, Mako, and Lin - for a good meal and a chance to get together in the interim between that high-stress situation and the election. When Lin received the invitation, she initially went to decline because she wanted to spend the evening with you, but then the messenger told her you were on the invite list and had already accepted.
So, here she was, in her nicest dark green jumpsuit, her hair parted slightly differently so that she felt like she put in some effort into her appearance. When she looked for you, she found you sitting at a table with Kya, Tenzin, Pema, Bumi, and a couple of women about your age who she guessed were other Kyoshi Warriors. Kya was on your left side, Bumi on her other side with Tenzin and Pema across from them. The Kyoshi Warriors were on the same side of the table as Tenzin and Pema. That left one chair on your right open.
You weren't wearing face paint, and your hair was loose. It was just like in the picture she'd been looking at the other day, except better. A posed picture was nothing compared to an unposed one, but any picture paled when compared to you in real life. There was something about seeing you in motion and hearing your voice that struck a chord in her. For a moment, it was like she was a kid who just wanted to kiss you all over again.
Lin felt tension she hadn't even realized was in her shoulders dissipate when you caught her eye and waved her over, pulling out the empty seat for her. "Hey! I was going to go looking for you if I didn't see you in a couple minutes. You're so punctual to these kinds of things, you're always one of the first ones here. I worried that maybe you didn't want to come."
"When have I ever missed a chance to see you?" Lin asked with a light tone, but after she said it, the words felt more powerful than she meant for them to. It caught her off-guard how much you meant to her.
Apparently, the suddenly sentimental question got to you too, because you blinked at her in surprise and ducked your head with a shy smile. "Never, if you could help it." You cleared your throat and gestured to the women across from you. "Lin, this is Daiyu and Xiuying. They're some of the highest ranked warriors from the biggest village. Warriors, this is Lin Beifong, Police Chief of Republic City."
"Nice to meet you, Chief Beifong," the woman you indicated to be Xiuying said, shaking Lin's hand.
Daiyu added, "We're happy to finally meet the woman (Y/n) always talks so highly of."
Lin raised her eyebrows in surprise only to find you still avoiding her eyes while fidgeting with your fingers. She smiled at the realization that you talked about her highly to your other Warriors, but it suddenly made her even more confused about your behavior the other day
"Oh, I love this song!" Kya chirped when the music suddenly changed to something more upbeat. "I have to dance. (Y/n), would you come with? It's no fun to dance by yourself."
You looked between her and Lin once before giving one of those awkward, strained smiles to the rest of the table and standing up. "Sure! Let's go."
As you left, Lin felt a wave of coldness sweep over her. She watched as you went to the dance floor with Kya, seeing the way Kya led you in a dance her parents had taught her when she was little. Lin recognized it because Tenzin had once taught her the same dance. It hurt to see your hands linked with Kya's. But there was still a grace to your movements that made Lin keep watching. She wondered what it would be like to dance with you, the two of you finding your own movements without the influence of someone else teaching you both.
"It's nice to see her happy," Xiuying commented as she watched you dancing with Kya. "I think being in the city again has done her a lot of good."
Furrowing her eyebrows in concern, Lin asked, "Is she not normally happy on Kyoshi Island?"
"She tries to be, most of the time. She has a duty to the island and to the Warriors, but sometimes when she thinks nobody is looking, she seems troubled."
Daiyu said quietly, "You know, she's almost the age that Suki was when she died. I think getting on in years is making her think about all kinds of things. When we were in our 20s, she used to say she'd be a Warrior until she died or could no longer fight, but now, she's been talking about retiring. I hope if she does, she does something that makes her smile again."
"I didn't realize she was unhappy. In our letters, she always seemed so positive."
"Of course she did. No matter what happened, she was always happy when writing you," replied Daiyu.
She said it so plainly that Lin wanted to ask about that coy spark in her eyes, but Lin instead found herself looking at you again. You and Kya had stopped dancing, and she was whispering something in your ear. After biting your lip, you whispered back in her ear. She pulled back suddenly before throwing her arms around you. Lin couldn't keep watching and turned away, pretending to be interested in whatever story Bumi was humiliating Tenzin with at the moment.
Of course, she should have expected that Tenzin would notice her trying not to pout and that he would jump at any opportunity to get away from Bumi's childhood stories.
"Lin, I think Bolin said you wanted to ask me some questions about the Triple Threat attack the other day," Tenzin broke in, getting up from the table. Her head snapped from you to him as she shot him a questioning look. "I think I finally have time for that, if we could talk for a moment."
Lin was about to say that she hadn't said any such thing, but Tenzin just raised his eyebrows at her and widened his eyes in some subtle, silent communication that she should just come along. So, she got up and followed him outside from the chatter and music to the relative quiet of the night sounds.
"Kya and (Y/n), huh?" he said, occupying himself with adjusting the sleeves of his formal robes. "How do you feel about that?"
She hated it.
"I don't really have feelings on it. It's none of my concern."
Neither of them looked at each other, but Tenzin said what she didn't have the strength to. "I know you love (Y/n)---"
"Don't know where you got that from---"
"You've always loved her," Tenzin said with a huff of laughter at the denial. "That was one of the reasons I had to break up with you."
While Lin would have normally inwardly cringed at the memory of their past relationship, she furrowed her eyebrows in confusion. "No... no, I loved you back then."
He didn't seem convinced; he didn't even react at the statement anymore than his previous slight amusement. "Maybe you did. But it wasn't in the way you loved (Y/n). We all always knew."
She shook her head at that last statement. No, everyone couldn't have known. No could have even suspected; her mother was Earth Kingdom, and that would never fly in the Earth Kingdom. "You couldn't have."
"Why do you think your mother always had the two of you train together? Why do you think Suyin always used (Y/n) as a distraction from herself when you nagged her? Why do you think that when we broke up, I told you to go to Kyoshi Island and talk to her?"
"You can't have known because I didn't even know!" she exclaimed, frustrated with her confusion and how lightly he was taking this. "And I'm the one who kissed her!" She froze as she realized what she said. She pinched the bridge of her nose and tried to remind herself to keep it together.
Curious, Tenzin said, "When was this?"
"Erm... I think a couple years before you and I got together."
Raising an eyebrow, he asked, "You kissed her all those summers ago and didn't even suspect that you might have had feelings for her? I know you shut out a lot of your feelings, but that was kind of cruel to her."
Lin flinched at that. She didn't want to hurt you - couldn't stand the idea that she was doing so. It made her eyes sting and her throat ache as she tried to hold back tears. You were always so focused on your work, on training and protecting those who needed help. How could she have known you wanted anything other than to be a strong warrior like your mentor? Did you lie awake the way she did these days - aching to go back to simpler times and have someone to warm your bed at night? Remorseful of the isolation, the sharp pain of living alone and without someone to hold and love?
"I didn't know how she felt," she defended, "how I felt. I didn't--- It's not---"
"You don't have to explain yourself to me," he interrupted. He set his hands on her shoulders and looked at her imploringly. "Lin, we all grew up together, and even though I wasn't as close to her as you were, she's my friend, too. I want you both to be as happy as you possibly can be, and I don't think either of you can move on without talking about this. Go to her."
He left her alone outdoors, and she mulled over his words. He had a point, she supposed. After all, her other relationships in her life had suffered for years until recently. There was a reason for that. Anytime she felt anything, she just... pushed it down and down, so deep inside her that she couldn't even think about it. She didn't want to think about it. Especially not with this! She had a reputation, she had a life! And what if her mother---
Okay, now even she had to admit that these were lousy excuses to even think of. Honestly, being the tough, intimidating chief of police for the whole city probably meant that it would take an actual major error on her part for her to lose her reputation. Maybe if worse came to worst, you might be held hostage or attacked by criminals to intimidate her, but you could handle yourself in a fight and then some. Besides, if Toph was willing to cover one of her daughters being a criminal, Toph probably wouldn't mind it if another daughter liked girls.
She swallowed thickly and steeled herself for the walk inside and to the drinks table where you were now situated with Kya, having a drink.
"(Y/n), can I steal you away for a minute to talk?" she asked, trying to look pleasant and not at all nervous.
You nodded, taking your drink with you, and followed her to a secluded corner away from the other guests at the party. "So!" you said when the two of you were alone. "What did you---"
Lin took you by the collar of your dress and did the one thing she'd been wanting to do for years ever since the last time she'd done it: She kissed you. But reducing the action to a simple kiss did it and you a major disservice. She opened up her heart to you and let every bit of adoration and affection she held for you out. Her hands held tightly to your waist to anchor her to you because if you drifted away again, she wouldn't be able to deal with feeling alone again for another day. Neither of you were getting any younger, so there was no more room for her to harbor regrets.
Your own brain was short-circuiting as you processed the fact that oh. OH. This is really happening! WHAT. By the time you lifted your hands to Lin's biceps, she was already pulling away, and a tiny part of you wanted to scream because you hadn't really gotten to enjoy the kiss before it was over.
"I love you," she said suddenly, bright green eyes searching your expression urgently. "I've loved you all our lives, and I don't want to waste another day not telling you or convincing myself that it's not true just because---"
You'd heard enough to know it would be okay to get another kiss from her. You threw your arms around her neck and cut her off by pressing your lips to hers in a second heated embrace, this time making sure you demonstrated your own fervor. It was only when you physically couldn't survive another second of not breathing that you pulled back and panted against her lips, "I love you, too."
"I know." She frowned, and her eyes seemed to shine with tears as she delicately took your face in her hands, thumbs skimming your cheeks. "I'm so sorry I didn't see it before. Years, decades we could have spent together---"
"Decades I would have spent on Kyoshi Island and decades you would have spent here," you said softly, making sure she knew you held no resentment against her. "We wouldn't have gotten much more time together than we've already had."
She was glad you weren't angry, but then she suddenly realized--- "Oh, spirits. Erm, about you and Kya...?"
"There is no me and Kya. She flirted a bit, it was good fun, but she realized I wasn't interested. She figured out I was into you." Scratching the back of your neck, you laughed, "I guess I'm a bit obvious."
"You and me both - Tenzin says I've been in love with you since we were kids."
"Obvious and oblivious," you joked, and the two of you shared giddy laughs. Once the moment passed, you folded your hands in front of you. "I didn't realize how much I missed Republic City--- how much I missed you until these last few days. Erm, do you think it would be okay if I stick around for a while? I was thinking of staying until at least the election to see if any bright young women would be interested in learning how to fight. This city can be pretty dangerous, after all."
It wasn't a bad idea, really. While chances were very low that anyone would want to move to Kyoshi Island and adopt the entire lifestyle of the Warriors, Lin could see some training and lessons as a positive and valuable experience for non-bending women. Besides, Zhu Li was definitely going to beat Raiko in the election, so it felt like a good time to offer more opportunities for female empowerment.
Plus, if you could be near Lin and doing something you loved while she did the work she loved, life would be as perfect as it could possibly be for Lin.
Beaming, she replied, "That would be fantastic! I think I could even help you arrange it."
You took her hands in yours and pressed another kiss to her lips. "Great. Let's worry about that tomorrow. Tonight, let's have fun!"
She followed you back to the dance floor, and together, the two of you enjoyed yourself more than you had in literal years. The night was easy the way things always used to be. Most importantly, there was no need to pretend you both were anything other than you were. She could look at you, feel what she felt all those summers ago, and feel good about it instead of dreading it so much she repressed it.

Motherly scares
I get a call from Lin in the middle of the night and immediately a sense of dread washes over me.
“Lin? What’s wrong?”
“It’s about Mako…”
I feel sick to my stomach at Lin’s solemn tone.
“What happened is he okay?”
“I’m sorry…”
The soft sob escaping Lin shatters my heart into a million pieces…
“How…”
“An explosion downtown… he went inside a burning building to save people but the fire hit a gas pipe…”
————————
I startle awake suddenly my heart racing a mile an hour, my body drenched in cold sweat as I look around my moonlit surroundings, next to me a concerned looking Lin.
“Love? Are you okay? What’s wrong?”
I attempt to calm down as I remember the events of last week and that Mako is in his bed down the hall since he has only a few minor injuries from the explosion.
“I’m okay… just a nightmare…”
I slip out of bed leaving a confused Lin behind as I silently walk to Mako’s room and open the door. He’s sleeping peacefully so I just look at him for a moment to make sure he’s still breathing and that he’s really okay before returning to bed. As I enter the bedroom Lin looks at me with a worried look.
“Y/n? Please tell me what’s wrong…”
I crawl back into bed and lay my head on her chest and tell her of my nightmare.
“Oh love… he’s okay… he has just a few bruises and a broken arm…”
“I know… it just… felt so real…”
“I know… just close your eyes and rest… I’m here he’s here and okay… just rest…”
I sigh softly and bury my face in her chest as she rubs my back and begin to fall back asleep soothed by Lin’s lingering scent jasmine perfume.
“I love you Lin…”
“I love you too sweetheart…”

Lets talk about how hot Lin Beifong is bc she's dreamy tbh. I can't decide if I imagine her as a gentle or rough lover, maybe she's a little bit of both? I do hc that she wouldn't be vocal until she orgasms, and that it would take lots of time and trust for her to let you get her there
absolutely based off of my lil conversation with pink heart nonnie. chubby gf implied.
I'm thinking about Lin being stressed beyond belief on a trip to Zaofu that you and the gang convinced her to go. She didn't really care for the urging of the over-enthusiastic young adults, but she really couldn't deny her wife. Especially not when you mentioned that she'd have you all to herself, instead of having to share your attention with Korra and Asami as they plan their next excursion to the Spirit Realm. She'd be able to spend a full week with you, no obligations and nothing but free time to spend being fawned over by her pretty little wife. Now how could she say no to that?
Except, now that she was in Zaofu, she remembered why she didn't want to come in the first place. She loves her sister and her nieces and nephews, she really does, but she can only deal with them so much before she snaps.
Your being as attentive as you can, but when she starts getting extra unreasonably snippy with Su at dinner, you know you have to act fast. With a few quick words and stern hands, you guide her out of the dining hall and back to your rooms. By the time you close the door behind you, Lin is sitting on the bed, huffing and grinding her jaw.
"Don't do that, you'll hurt yourself," You chide, walking over to her and standing between her spread legs, threading one gentle hand through her silver hair. She hums, running her hands up your thighs, resting on your waist and tugging you into her.
With her forehead pressed against your tummy, her words are muffled. "Mmmm, I know, I know. Always looking out for me."
"It's my duty as your wife, honey, just like it's my duty to stop you from damaging your relationship with your sister again," You grumble, pressing a kiss to the top of her head and wrapping her in a hug, letting her push her face into you. Her grip on your waist tightens and then releases, softly rubbing at the flesh. She exhales, relaxing under your touch until she looks up, pressing her chin into you as she looks up at you.
"Thank you dear, it was a good idea, getting me out of there. I'm sorry I've been so stressed this whole trip, ruining our only vacation in who knows how long," She sighs, eyes apologetic and hands clinging to you as she tugs you into her lap. Your thighs are pressed to her sides, warm, soft flesh grounding her as she wraps her arms around your waist.
You bring your hands up, cupping her face and stroking a thumb across her cheekbone, looking at her with so much softness she nearly tears up. "You're not ruining anything, Lin. You're just stressed, it's okay. I get the same way around my family."
"I just get so frustrated, I try not to but sometimes I just can't help it," Lin sighs, pressing a kiss to your palm and tugging you into her a little more, accidentally rocking your hips against hers. The intimacy of the situation, the combined tension from being so pent up for so long, and the desire to ease your wife's worries, cause a little pearl of an idea to build in your head.
"You know, you could get that frustration out in a more ... productive ... fashion," You murmur, running your hands down to rub at her tense shoulders.
Lin's eyebrows go up, immediately catching the hint as she runs her hand down to grip at your ass. "Oh yeah? Care to share what you mean by 'productive'?"
You whimper at her rough hands gripping you, slowly starting to rock you against her. "Mmhm, you can take your frustrations out on me. I mean, there's no better stress reliever than an orgasm, or two, or three."
"You know, you're absolutely right my dear," Lin murmurs, moving one hand up to tug you into a kiss, keeping her rough, calloused hands against the nape of your neck. She presses her lips against yours in a rough, passionate kiss, bruising your soft lips as you whimper against her. One of your hands trails down to her chest, past her tummy to grip at the hem of her tank top, impatiently tugging it up her body.
Lin lands one rough smack on your ass in response to your impatience. "Calm down, brat."
"Fucking need you Lin, 's been too long," You groan, nipping at her bottom lip and pulling at her shirt. Lin huffs, placing both hands on your ass to flip you over and throw you down on the bed, crawling over you and yanking her shirt off, her bra following suit.
"Happy now? Couldn't have just been good for me, now I gotta fuck the brat out of you," She snaps, grabbing your roaming hands and pinning them above your head with an always-attractive show of metal-bending. She's done it so often now, it's second nature to be gentle with you, making sure the metal is rounded and dull, leaving you room to wiggle but not to escape.
"Wasn't being a brat, just wanted to see you," You huff, bucking your hips up into her as she shoves your shirt up above your tits, exposing your soft mounds – and distinct lack of a bra – to the cold room. She grunts, roughly pawing at your chest with one hand while the other yanks your pants down. In a matter of minutes she has you right where she wants you, nearly naked and almost completely exposed.
"You're a fucking brat, now where is my strap? I know a pretty little slut like you would've packed at least one of them," She teases, landing a rough smack to the outside of your thigh, laughing when you squeal.
"Shit, it's in my bag, the green one," You pant, spreading your thighs even wider in anticipation. Lin hums and slides off the bed, stripping off her pants and underwear before walking over to your bag and pulling out the girthy, six-inch, forest green strap attached to a worn-in harness.
She knows this is your favorite strap, with just how thick it is, the detailed veins that drag against your sensitive walls, and the pretty mushroom tip that she loves to press against your gushy little spot. Not to mention the fun little feature it comes with: another side, which presses into Lin as she fucks you, leaving her shaky and determined to make you cum. She's smirking as she pulls it on, sliding her side into her, tightening the harness around her hips and making her way back to your writhing form on the bed. You watched her little performance whining at every inch of exposed skin and muscle, the soft groan Lin let out when she slip it inside, the way the harness tightened around her ass and thighs.
You're basically vibrating with excitement when Lin climbs back onto the bed, sliding between your legs and tugging your thighs up around her waist. You know she's not gonna fuck you just yet but you try anyway, bucking your hips against the veiny silicone.
"Quit fucking moving," Lin barks, placing one sharp smack against your clit before sliding her fingers down to your leaking hole. She spreads your slick all over your cunt, slicking up the dildo with your juices before pushing one finger into you, followed by two more.
You're melting under her touch, hips twitching as she fucks three fingers into you, curving up into your g-spot just to see you cry out for her.
"Lin, Lin please, honey, need you," You plead, bringing your bound hands down to claw at her stomach. It pulls a groan out of her, seeing you so needy, knowing it's been too damn long since she last had you like this.
"Well since you said please," She teases, gripping her shaft and lining it up with your needy cunt, slowly pressing in. You choke out a moan at the stretch, trying to keep still as Lin pushes all the way in, the base of the harness grazing your clit. It causes the other side to push deeper into her, brushing against her sensitive spots and making her shaky.
She gives you a moment to adjust – also giving her a moment to collect herself – before pulling out and slamming back in. She sets a brutal pace, wanting to fuck the frustration out of her body and give you what you asked for. Lin hikes your hips higher on her thighs, trying to get the perfect angle as she fucks into you with no mercy.
"Ah- fuck, Lin, 's perfect, you're perfect," You moan, hands pressed against her lower tummy as she works you over, finally finding your spot when you wail and tremble against her, scratching your nails against her.
"Right there? Yeah, I know honey, just let me take care of it," She grunts, doubling her efforts and snapping her hips against you even harder. You're crying, moaning out her name and squealing with each punch of her strap against your spot, getting closer and closer to the edge. Lin's not much better, only working the other side into her even harder as she tries to get you to fall apart.
Without saying a word, she pushes your hands down from her tummy and onto your clit, letting you rub at the neglected bud as she keeps you spread open. It pushes you over, creaming around her strap as you cry and try to keep playing with your clit, feeling it twitch beneath your finger tips. You're shaking, bucking against Lin's hips as you cum around her strap, but she never lets up, fucking you through it.
You have no chance to come down, letting Lin fuck you into another beautiful high, this one more intense than the first. She would usually be kinder about it, but the way you tightened around her strap made the other side grind against her just right, pushing her into an orgasm.
"Ha-ah, shit, dear, mmh," She grunts, pressing all the way in and grinding into you as she shakes above you. It's all made more intense by the way you tremble beneath her, leaking around her strap as you whiteout for a split second.
You two stay like that, shaking against each other as your orgasm course through you, all the frustration and tension leaking out of Lin.
By the time your breathing returns to normal, you're still shaky, but Lin is slipping out of you as gently as possible, pulling the strap off and throwing it across the room. She's up in an instant, grabbing wet wipes and clean towels to clean you two up. She's so unbearably gentle with you, massaging your hips to eliminate some of the soreness, cleaning you up enough so that you could comfortably sleep.
It takes a second, but she finally slides back into bed, pulling you into her chest. "Thank you dear, I needed that."
Her words are uncharacteristically soft, or at least they would be to anyone but you. She's pressing soft kisses and caresses to your skin, soothing you to sleep in her arms.
Before you drift away, she hears one last, gentle little murmur.
"Mm, I love you, my sweet wife," with a soft kiss pressed to the divot of her chest. It melts her down to her core, letting her drift off to sleep with no worries.

Welcome to Republic City
Tumblr media
Y/N was walking to the compound to watch Korra's bending test which she already knew her sister passed. As she walked in she heard Korra "Woohoo! Hey, why all the doom and gloom, people? We should be celebrating three elements down, one to go". "You're getting ahead of yourself as usual, Korra. We haven't decided if you passed your firebending test yet". "Ever since you were a little girl, you've excelled at the physical side of bending, but completely ignored the spiritual side. The Avatar must master both". Korra was now pouting Y/N chuckled at that she knew her sister. Korra quickly replied "I haven't ignored it, it just doesn't come as easy to me. But that's why I should start training with Tenzin immediately. He's Mister Spiritual".
"I think my sister has proven to have master fire bending , hasn't she master Katara?"
Y/N said with a smile as she walked to where everyone was the masters saw the young avatars sister walking to where they were. Y/N was now stood next to Korra ,Y/N bowed to the masters as the the master did the same to the prodigy water bending master. "Do you believe she's ready, Master Katara?" The white Lotus leader asked Katara "Yes. If anyone can teach her what she needs to learn, it's Tenzin." katara said with a smile. Y/N smiled at that, Korra would soon be the avatar and helping people.
She was only brought back out of thoughts when she heard Korra "Yes! Finally! , I mean, thank you all for believing in me" Y/N just smiled at that as she was tackled into a hug by her sister which Y/N laughed at but hugged her sister back , soon Korra let go of Y/N and started walking but unable to hold her excitement, breaking into a run leaving the training ground as the master watch her. "It's good to see you Y/N" Y/N turned around and went up to hug her former water bending master as she did katara just chuckled at the young masters child like behavior "it's good to see you too master katara" Y/N said as she let go of katara. Katara motioned for the young master to follow her and so Y/N did she could tell that katara wanted to talk to her it had been awhile since they had talked.

A few days later, Tenzin arrived with a very pregnant Pema, and his three kids. Katara greets her son and his family immediately while Y/N was walking to where Korra was as she had just gotten there. Korra watched the youngest son of Avatar Aang's with her big eyes full of excitement and a huge smile on face. Y/N in the other hand was much more reserved than Korra as for Y/N did not smile as much.
Tenzin looked over his mother shoulders to see the two young ladies standing there. "Korra, Y/N." Korra sprinted to where Tenzin was standing, ready to meet her new teacher, while Y/N walked forward "look at you Korra, you've grown into quite the young Avatar." His eyes lit up to see the young prodigy water bending master. "Y/N look at you, I have to say you are quite the fighter bending and non-bending." The girl nods at the airbending master. "Thank you master Tenzin." YN bowing to the airbending master soon be in interrupted by Korra,Y/N was not surprised to say the least that Korra would do so. "Master Tenzin, I'm so glad you're here. I can't wait to get started" he looks down at the young avatar finding it hard to tell her "yes, we'll..." Tenzin said with a sigh.
"You're going to have to tell her sooner or later" Pema said to her husband as she put her hand on his arm Korra now looking at Pema fully with a confused expression. "Tell me what?" Korra asked the airbening master with a hit disappointment and sadness in her voice "you're not staying, are you?" Katara asked her son sadly Tenzin sigh before speaking "I'm afraid not. We're only visiting for the night. Then I have to return to Republic City" "But ... no, you're supposed to move here. You're supposed to teach me" Y/N was now there standing next to Korra look at her sister Y/N had never been the one on to be touchy-feely as she says but looking at her sister face full of disappointment and sadness. she wished she could've done something that would her out ( y'all I can't write this part it's bit boring, so imma skip some of the talking, please don't hate me)
Afater Korra talked with katara she left the compound say goodbye to her parents but Y/N wasn't going to let her sister go by herself. Y/N had been to Republic city couple of times but she didn't know the streets well enough but new enough to get to Air temple island "where do you think your going?"
Y/N asked as she walked up behind her parents "ummm... nowhere I umm..." Korra knew she couldn't lie to Y/N she knew her to well so she gave up and told her where she was going "fine I'm going to Republic city to train with Master Tenzin" "alright let's go" "your going with me?" Korra asked Y/N "yeah come on let's got now I think I have everything, I knew you would leave so I had everything packed and ready to go" Y/N said as she got on Naga. "bye mom,bye dad , we love you" they said before they left.

"Korra we're lost aren't we?" Y/N said a bit pissed at Korra for running away form she had to find her again so here they are lost. " yea we are but let me ask those people over there" Korra said to Y/N and walked over to the people when where there as Y/N tried to figure out where they were. "Excuse me, I think I'm lost." Korra said as she walked closer to the old lady "How do I get to Air temple Island from here?" the old women points Korra to Air temple island as she does a red Satomobile turns the street. "You should get going young lady" lord worm said to Korra clearly she was scared " it isn't safe" she whispered to Korra. ( oki so this is a lot of writing so imma skip agin I know this is my second time I promise maybe one more skip form her than I'll stop).
"KORRA WHAT DID YOU DO!?!?" Y/N yelled at Korra while she ran to where Korra was but Korra was to busy watching the metal benders as they used there cable to lower themselves to down the ground "Police! Freeze, where you are" One of the officers said. "Cool! metalbenders" Korra said excitedly Y/N on the other hand was still pissed , she didn't want to get arrested just because of her sister. "I caught the bad guys for you, officers." Korra said to the officer "arrest them!" the officer said as three officers went to arrest the gangsters. Than officer pointed at Korra "you're under arrest, too" Korra took a step back than defensively "what do you mean I'm under arrest?" Korra than pointing at the gangsters and said "those are the bad guys over there! They were smashing up a shop" " from the looks of it, you smash up a lot more" He took up a fighting stance and shot a cable to bind Korra. However Korra quickly moved out of the way and pulling the cable back.
"Wait, you - you can't arrest me!" her arms were trembling due to the fact that she was pulling the cable's to stop the officer from arriving her "Let me explain!" " You can explain yourself all you like, down at headquarters" the officer said trying to retract the cable. "Please officer you can't arrest her" Y/N tried to reason with the officer but it didn't work "I'm sorry ma'am you need to understand we're just doing our job". Korra let's go of the cable and gets on  Naga than starts to get away format he police " KORRA! NO JUST GO WITH THEM" Y/N yelled at Korra but Korra had already left and now Y/N was stuck. 'We'll this just is great first day in Republic city and she gets herself arrested now I have to go to Air temple island Teznin gong to kill me' Y/N thinks as she walking a to air temple Island. Y/N makes it to air temple island as she steps in the island she heard the air bending kids  and as she walked up the stairs she saw at same time they saw her "Y/N" they screamed as they tackled her into a hug she Y/N wasn't a fan of hug but she only allowed some people to hug. "Hey kids can you tell me where your dad is?" "Dads in his office" Jinora told Y/N "alright thank you Jinora" Y/N said as she walked to Tenzin's office.
Y/N Pov
'Alright all I need to do is knock on the door and tell Tenzin that Korra got arrested or does he already know?' I though I was about to knock when the door opened and on the other side was the airbending master. He looked shocked to see me but soon he collect himself and cleared his throat "I'm guessing you already know Korra got arrested?" I asked "I I why what are you doing here and yes I do know" "well I'll tell you why me and Korra are here once we get here Tenzin" I told the airbending master.

Time skip to where they are at the police station
________________________________
"Chief, councilman Tenzin is here" I heard one of the metal bending officers "let him in" I heard a gruff  but soft voice. As we walked in I saw Korra cuffed to a metal table and than I saw her she was the beautiful to say the least the chief of police , standing tall with authority 'so this is Lin Beifong she's so hot' I think to myself 'am I blushing !?!??' I tried to hide my blush it was a good thing no one was looking or paying attention to me. I was bought back out of my thoughts when I heard Korra's voice " Tenzin sorry... I got a little sidetracked on my way to see you" I mentally slap myself hearing Korra say that " Lin, you are looking radiant as usual" "Cut the garbage, Tenzin. Why is the Avatar in Republic City? I thought you were supposed to be moving down to the South Pole to train her" the chief asked Tenzin aggressively clearly she was annoyed.
"My relocation has been delayed. The Avatar, on the other hand, will be heading back to the South Pole immediately, where she will stay put" "but-" Korra try's to protest but it didn't work as she got cut off by Tenzin "If you would be so kind as to drop the charges against Korra, I will take full responsibility for today's regrettable events and cover all the damage" "fine" the chief says while crossing her arms and metal bends the cuff as Korra rubs her wrist "get her out of my city" "always a pleasure Lin" he turns to Korra and said in a hard tone "let's go Korra" as we were walking out I saw at the corner of my eyes the chief looking at me I tried not to think about it. When I look back I see the chief with her index and pinky figure out pointing it to her eyes than to Korra. As sign 'saying I'll be watching you' I see Korra mock her. 'Do you have death wish Korra' I think to myself when I see her mocking the chief.
________________________________
Finally we make it back to Air temple island as the boat docks we see three gliders heading out 'it's the kids' I think to myself. "KORRA!" I hear Ikki and Meelo yell happily as they run to hug Korra Jinora stays behind until Korra motion hurt to join the group hug and so so does as she runs and hugs Korra. "Are you coming to live with us on the island?" Ikki asked Korra excitedly I just stayed quiet to see what Korra says "No, I'm sorry, Ikki. I have to go home now." Korra say sadly and I sigh as we start walking up to the Southern Water Tribe boat that had arrived with the white lotus members. I put my arm around Korra's shoulders to gave her some comfort and it does.
"Wait" we nothing stop walking and look back at Teznin "I have done my best to guide Republic City toward the dream my father had for it, but you're right. It has fallen out of balance since he passed. I thought I should put off your training in order to uphold his legacy" Tenzin walks up to Korra and out a hand her shoulder I smile at that it's rare for me to smile I don't often but I do smile "but you are his legacy. You may stay and train airbending here with me" Korra gasps as I just watch her r"Republic City needs its Avatar once again" "Yes! Thank you! You're the best!" Korra excitedly says "yaaaaaaay" the three kids celebrate as Korra pulls me and the three kids into a group than pulls Tenzin as well.
________________________________
"Hello?" Korra say into the microphone "I'm Korra, your new Avatar" as the crowd cheer for Korra "Does this mean you've moved to Republic City?" "Were you trying to send a message to the Triads yesterday?" "Will you be fighting crime or the Anti-bending Revolution, or both?" "Will you be working with Chief Beifong and the police?" I'm a bit worried Korra has never been out anywhere so this is new to her but she doing great I am standing next to Tenzin on the lest as the chief of police stand to Korra's right. I can see the Chief glacing in my direction every once in a while I don't know why. Korra is a bit confused but she's holding up great "uh ... yes, I am definitely here to stay, but honestly I - I don't exactly have a plan yet. See, I'm still in training, but, look, all I know is Avatar Aang meant for this city to be the center of peace and balance in the world, and I believe we can make his dream a reality. I look forward to serving you." I smiled at my sister she did a great job for her first time being out in public. At the corners of my eyes I see the chief look at me she looks so be deep in though I don't know what about but looks relaxed but not for long as she is brought back out of her thoughts she. She hears the crowd cheer for Korra. Than I see the chiefs face shift into her 'work mode' as I call it.

You know what, it’s been a while since I’ve read anything for lin. How about a lin beifong x combustion bender reader? I feel like that would be an interesting pair. If that’s too much then let’s have some general dating headcanons?
A/N: This took me far too long to write this little and I can certainly expand on it when I have time. Sorry it’s so short, I was just far busier than I thought I would be. To make up for it, I have put a picture of my pretty kitty at the end!

Made With Love
Lin always works so hard. I love how dedicated she is to protecting the city and the people in it, but she drives me nuts when she doesn't eat enough. She skips meals claiming, ‘there's too much work to do’, but she needs to take care of herself too. With that said, I'm currently in the kitchen making her dinner. Ever since we first started dating, i’ve always seen that woman dig into noodles.its her favorite thing other than the mass amount of protein she eats. I’m making her noodles from scratch as well as the sauce. I’ve always loved cooking so I'm certainly having fun. The radio is on, music playing loudly, and me dancing around the kitchen. Sometimes, if Lin was home, she would just watch me as I got to work in the kitchen. Sometimes I'd try getting her to join me, sometimes I would succeed, and we would laugh at our inability to dance. The noodles are almost finished cooking so I start on the sauce adding just a tiny bit of heat. I pan fry the noodles, add the sauce, her favorite vegetables and some nuts for some saltiness. I pack it into the to-go containers with the fried tofu on the side. I place my food in the bag with hers, mine far spicier than hers, and place our tea in it as well. Draping the bag over my shoulder, I leave for my walk to Lin’s office.
Lin chose to get an apartment not far from the station, so the walk wasn’t very long, but I still got to feel the sun on my face. As I walk into the station, officers wave, of course recognizing me. I may not work with them, but of course they would recognize the Chief's fiance. When I knock on her door, her gruff voice comes through with a rough, “What”. I push through the door to see my darling Lin hunched over her desk and eyebrows knitted. I close the door and lock it, the click getting her attention and looking up at me.
“Y/N? What are you doing here?” I round her desk and place the bag on her desk before pulling her chair out so I can sit on her lap.
“You are working far too hard and need a break,” she opens her mouth to fight on the idea, but i raise my finger to her lips to shush her, “and you will not argue on the matter”. She sighs, but smiles at me, then kisses the pad of my finger. I let a chuckle escape my lips that turned into a squeal when Lin began standing with her arms around me. My face I’m sure has turned red, and Lin has noticed.
“Why the blush future Mrs. Beifong?”
“Your strength is incredibly attractive my dear fiancé” she smirks as she grabs the bag and begins carrying us to the couch.
“Well my love, you should see how much I can lift,” she places the bag down, then takes a seat with me in her lap, “you are easy to carry”. I hide my face in her neck and feel a peck on my cheek. “Now, let’s see what my girl made for dinner,” she pulls out the boxes and looks inside, “you are far too good to me”
“Not too good, just treating you the way you deserved to be treated”. In an instant, she caresses my cheek and kisses me; soft and gentle, filled with love. She pulls away with our foreheads pressed against each other and a soft smile.
“Thank you baby, I love you”
“I love you too Linny”

Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was Suyin’s annual Zaofu anniversary party. Celebrating the day that Zaofu had become its own city (and a successful one at that). She had all of her close friends and family members come by her house and by the end of the day, the house would be jam packed with people. All of them wearing different earth kingdom themed clothing and formal outfits. She would allow most of her guards to join the party along as long as they had been taking turns watching over Zaofu and not ingesting any alcohol.
Lin had decided to bring you as her plus one this year and the year before to the party. Lin dressed in one of her green earth kingdom suits and you accompanied her in a long green dress that had a slit by your left leg showing a small amount of your thigh.
The sky was still blue, and the sun was still out. The two of you had arrived and entered through the large metal doors. Suyin immediately ran over to the two of you, enveloping your neck in a hug. You wrap your hands around her to give her a small hug back.
“Y/N! So glad to see you again.” Su says as she lets go of her hold on you and walks over to her sister.
“And Lin, I’m glad to see you as well.” Suyin wraps her arms around Lin’s waist, her head falling onto Lin’s chest as Lin raises her hands in the air, unsure of what to do.
Lin looks over to you with wide eyes and a face of uncertainty. You smile at her tilting your head a bit to signal that she should hug Su back. Lin grumbles a bit but twists her mouth into a small smile as she pats her sisters back a little. “Glad to see you too, Su.” Lin says with a small voice full of genuinity.
Su pulls back with a large grin plastered on her face. She grabs yours and Lin’s hands in her own and says, “Well, there are refreshments and food inside, go make yourself at home. I’ve got more people to greet.”
Tumblr media
It was getting late. The sun had already gone down and the party goers had gone from setting off fireworks and dancing throughout the night to settling in Suyin’s massive home and enjoying drinks while chatting with one another.
Lin had been pulled away from you some time ago to talk to some of her old colleagues. You settled down in the corner of one of the green couches, a drink in your hand as you watched Lin across the room talk to a bunch of old men in suits.
“This seat taken?” A deep voice pulls you out of your thoughts as you snap your head up to see a girl in Zaofu uniform and a thick braid to accessorize her.
“Oh, no. Not at all.” You respond as you scooch over a bit more to let the girl sit next to you.
“Kuvira.” She holds her hands out allowing you to shake her hand. “Y/N.” You respond with a small smile. Her calloused hands holding a strong grip over your much smaller hands in comparison.
“I’ve never seen you around.” You say to her as you let go of her grasp. “Yeah, last year I was patrolling a lot during this time. Some of the other guards wanted me to cover for them so I never had the time to attend the party.” She responds smiling back at you.
You nod in her response and take a sip of your drink. “Champagne?” She asks and you look at her confused until you realize she was talking about your drink. “Oh, no. This is apple juice. I’m pretty lightweight, I’ve already had enough glasses of wine.” You say as you chuckle and Kuvira laughs lightly with you.
In all honesty, you and Lin were like polar opposites. Drinking was not an exception. Lin could hammer down alcohol like they’re water and come back completely sober. You, on the other hand, could barely tolerate vodka.
You and Kuvira continue talking until one specifically funny joke warrants a loud burst of laughter from you. This grabs Lin’s attention as she looks over the shoulder of her colleague and sees you laughing as Kuvira’s hand had made its way behind the couch and over your shoulder. Her other hand inching towards your thigh.
At this sight, Lin excuses herself and walks towards the couch the two of you were sitting on and grabs your arm. “I’m feeling a bit tired, I think we should go.” Lin says coldly looking at you and purposefully ignoring Kuvira.
“Oh, sure. Sorry Kuvira, I’ve got to go.” You say standing up but before you could leave, Kuvira takes a hold of your hand. You look down, shocked as Kuvira stares up at you and says, “I had fun talking with you Y/N. Maybe next time you come over we can talk again?” You open your mouth to respond but Lin pulls you away by your waist hurriedly. You stare behind you to see Kuvira looking at you dumbfoundedly and you lip sync out a “I’m sorry.”
“Lin, what the hell was that?” You say as you turn your attention back to Lin and you see her scowling with her eyebrows furrowed. You quickly shut your mouth realizing she was angry as she pushes you into one of Suyin’s guest rooms.
She slams the door closed with one of her legs as her mouth latches onto yours, kissing you fervently. Her hand metal bends the lock closed. You reciprocate eagerly attempting to match her fierceness. Lin breaks the kiss as she starts peppering kisses down your neck. Your lips bruised and red as you pant for air.
“Lin what–” You attempt to utter out as Lin cuts you off. “Up.” She says one word and you know what she means. You jump onto her arms, her rough large hands holding onto your ass as she starts to kiss down your cleavage. She backs you onto the bed and throws you down.
Lin takes off her suit jacket in one quick motion. She leans in to kiss you again but you hold her shoulders and stop her before she can get any closer. “Lin, as much as I love how rough you’re going with me right now, what’s wrong?” You said as you looked into her eyes. Lin’s tough facade falls and she leans in closer, making your arms bend in front of her shoulders. She whispers out, “Just, please. We don’t have to continue if you don’t want to but…” She says with her eyes lidded and her breathing slowed down. The moonlight shines onto her face and her cute expression along with her begging makes you want to shed a tear.
You lean in and break the distance kissing her slowly. She kisses back, much slower this time. As if she was savoring you and memorizing the shape of your lips. Her hands gently hold onto your waist, one arm going around to unzip the dress.
As she slowly takes off your dress you dip your head into her neck to kiss and mark her. She groans out, leaning her neck to the side to let you have more room.
You kick your dress off and Lin leans back to admire your braless body. She groans at the sight and leans down to mark her way down to your breasts leaving purple and red spots. She takes a nipple in her mouth and slowly moves her tongue around. A hand fondling with your other breast. You moan out as your back arches to move your breasts closer to her.
Her free hand travels down to your underwear and cups your pussy. You whimper out a please as you try to lower yourself to get more friction from her hand.
She chuckles as she leans back away from your breasts. You whimper out at the cold air hitting your hardened nipples. Lin stares down at your face, admiring your neediness and lidded eyes. Your lips plump and glossy under the moonlight. “God you’re gorgeous.” She mutters out bringing one hand to cup your face and the other still holding onto your underwear. You lean your face into her touch.
“Who does this pussy belong to?” She asks you as she starts to rub her thumb on your clothed clit making you buck your hips and moan “You, Lin. You.”
“You sure it’s not that Zaofu guard that was eyeing you like a hungry pig?” Lin growls leaning close to your ears. You shake your head eagerly, not trusting your voice to respond.
“You were so close to her tonight, I almost thought you’d forgotten who you belong to.” She whispers coldly into your ears. “No, I belong to you, Lin. Only you.” You squeak out.
With that, she pushes your underwear to the side and presses a finger inside of you. You immediately moan out her name. “Please, more.” You whimper out, wrapping your arms around her shoulders.
Lin inserts an extra finger in and slowly pushes in and out making you whine out in neediness. “You just suck up my fingers so well. You were begging to be whored out like this weren’t you?” She says as she gets up and cups your chin, forcing you to open your mouth. She removes her fingers from your vagina and puts them in your mouth. You close your mouth and suck on her fingers, cleaning them off for her. “Good job.” She says as she starts to make her way towards your thighs. She pulls off your underwear and you help by bucking your hips up. She admires your bare pussy and smooth skin.
“Wait.” You say as she starts to lean in. She sits back up staring at you wondering if she did something wrong. “I think it’s rather unfair how much clothes you’ve got on and how little I have.” You say sitting up, drawing a finger down her blouse. She chuckles and starts unbuttoning her shirt as you lean back in to capture her lips. Lin slips in her tongue after your fight for dominance (not really a fight as you let her win rather quickly).
She slips off her blouse and leans back to take off her pants. Once her pants are off, she pushes you back down onto the bed and grips your thighs.
“Give me a word.” She says as she lingers just barely over your clit. Her hot breath sends sensations through your body. “Red.” You whisper out, breathless. She nods and captures your clit in her mouth, skillfully licking and sucking on it. You buck your hips up moaning. She removes her grasp on your thighs and holds your stomach down.
Your hands move down to her hair and you tug on it moaning and whimpering her name. Lin would usually tie your hands up by the headboard during this time but she was enjoying the tugging right now (although she would deny it if you ever asked her). She then inserts two fingers into your hole, fingering you with precision and hitting your g-spot every time.
“You taste so good,” she mutters into your pussy and her words make your vagina clench around her fingers. “So glad I get this pussy all to myself,” she groans out and you whimper at her words.
“Look at me,” she says, making your head look down at her, your eyes meeting as she eats you out.
“Lin…” you pant out, unable to finish your sentence. You don’t need to though, Lin can sense you’re getting close and she says, “Let go, let go for me.” And you do just that. You orgasm with a high scream like moan, yelling out her name.
She eases you out of your high and slowly slips her fingers out causing you to whimper at the emptiness. She gets up and you see her lips drenched with your cum. You blush under her gaze.
“Getting shy now? Don’t worry, this isn’t the end.” She says, leaning down to kiss you, giving you a taste of yourself on her tongue.
Tumblr media
After many more orgasms and many more rounds. She finally relents and pulls you into her arms. “I’ll start the bath,” she says slowly getting up. “No…just stay with me a little longer,” you respond dozing off into sleep. “If I do that, I’m afraid we’ll both fall asleep,” she says, chuckling and pulling away completely from you, resulting in a whine coming out of your mouth. She kisses your forehead and runs off to the bathroom, soon after, you hear the sound of water coming out of the faucet.
You sigh dreamily and think that in every other universe, you’d choose her over everyone else.

Happier to Be Wrong.
Part One, Part Two, Part Three, Part Four, Part Five: Chapter One, Part Five: Chapter Two, Part Five: Chapter Three, Part Six: Chapter One, Part Six: Chapter Two, Part Seven, Part Eight, Part Nine, Part Ten, Part Eleven, Part Twelve, Part Thirteen
Summary: "She knows the signs. Inconsistent affection in public or private, not initiating dates or outings, seeming lack of interest in progressing the relationship as a whole…
She’s learned. She’s wiser now. And she’s not going to get caught off guard –not going to get hurt–the same way again."
AKA talking about feelings and trauma is hard, part one.
Pairing(s): Lin Beifong x Reader.
Rating: T for arguing and some intense emotional stuff.
Word count: 6.8k.
She’s not too big to admit her faults. She can be uptight. She likes order and routine to the point of erring on the side of rigidity. She can be icy, which gets worse if she’s pissed. She’s got a short temper in certain areas; a poor tolerance for stupidity and bullshit, if you will.
Toph had called her a “grumpy little badgermole,” back when she was seven and cranky over other kids constantly cutting lines at school.
Tenzin had called her pessimistic. So had Kya and Bumi. So had Su, and Toph, and Aunt Katara, Uncle Sokka, Uncle Aang, Saikhan, Riyu–
“Pessimistic” was the one she refused to concede. It was hardly pessimistic to prepare for the worst –especially since it happened so often! Especially considering her line of work! It was hardly pessimistic to be cautious and prudent.
And it was hardly fucking pessimistic when she was usually right.
She knows the signs. Inconsistent affection in public or private, not initiating dates or outings, seeming lack of interest in progressing the relationship as a whole…
The first one had been easy to spot with Tenzin, back in the day. She hadn’t argued about it at the time, though. She’d put her blinders on, chalked it up to stress with Air Nomad stuff, and kept plowing through life and work alike. However, she’d missed the other two with him. She’d been so busy with work and trying to make her career that she’d just… let things go. They’d always pick things up back later –or so she thought. She thought they’d have the time.
She’s learned. She’s wiser now. And she’s not going to get caught off guard –not going to get hurt–the same way again.
...
She’d called you earlier and asked to talk; no sense in avoiding –delaying–the obvious. You’d said yes, she’d ended the call because she still had work to do, and… that’d been it.
It’s been a few months since the two of you started officially seeing each other. Summer is waning into autumn; it’s cold enough in the evening now that she needs a coat if she goes out.
She turns the collar of her peacoat up when a particularly icy breeze snakes around her. The wind’s been coming from the North lately, cooling the city as winter draws closer. Part of Lin –a part of her that she doesn’t acknowledge often–wonders if the cooling temperatures are a sign. Cooling seasons, cooling romance, bullshit like that. She scowls and walks faster. It doesn’t mean anything. Facts decide outcomes, not coincidental circumstances.
She regrets not driving over. She’d taken a tram part of the way, then opted to walk the rest of the way. She’d thought –hoped–that the walk would help take some of the edge off her mood. Instead, all it’s done is given her more time to overthink things. Maybe it’s better just to end things right now. Avoid something more drawn out and painful. She rounds the corner to the street your apartment complex is on and sighs. No, no. Talk to her first, then decide. The most facts make for the best decisions.
You’re waiting for her in the lobby –both unexpected and somewhat unwelcome; she was hoping to have the elevator ride to focus and try –probably fail–to calm her remaining nerves.
Lin stops short, surprised. “Oh, hi.”
“Hey.” You offer her a soft, if concerned smile. “What’s up? You sounded pretty serious on the phone.”
Can’t imagine why. Lin purses her lips, then nods towards the elevator; one thing she never wants to repeat again is a public break up. “Let’s head up.”
You hook your arm around hers once the elevator doors close. You lean against her, cushioning your head against her shoulder. “Did you have a good day at work?”
“Passable,” Lin grunts. She doesn’t want to be rude –she really, truly doesn’t–but the thought of making fucking small talk right now, with how things are, makes her want to puke. Don’t fucking act like you don’t know what’s going on. You’re smarter than that.
Patience. If there’s one thing nearly forty years on the force has taught her, it’s patience. She’s witnessed countless interrogations and stakeouts fizzle down the drain from getting too emotional or jumping in too soon; fights in relationships aren’t all that different, really.
“Well, you said you wanted to talk,” you declare once you close your apartment door behind both of you. You flip the lock, then shrug when she turns to look at you. Your expression’s tighter now, and you’re not moving into her personal space again; you’ve picked up that something’s wrong. “What’s up?”
Lin stares at you for a moment, both to collect her thoughts and study you. You’re shifting from foot to foot, and you’ve got your lower lip tucked between your teeth, but you’re not avoiding her gaze. You’re more on alert, but not guilty, per se.
She can’t decide whether to be angry or curious. She jams her hands into the pockets of her coat and ambles further into your apartment. “Have you been happy while we’ve been together?”
You sputter. Your eyes go wide. “What –what kind of question is that?”
“It’s the one I’m asking,” Lin replies, careful to keep her voice neutral and steady.
“I –yes. Of course I have!” You smile, but it quickly fades as you assess her with a look of dawning fear. “Have… have you not been happy?”
She has to bite the tip of her tongue to keep from automatically reassuring you. Focus. Eye on the target. “You’re happy with how things are? Between us?”
“...Yes,” you answer after a moment of bewildered silence. “I am.” Your brows draw together, and you angle away from her slightly. “Why –why are you asking me any of this? What’s going on?”
She shrugs. “Just piecing things together.”
Your eyes narrow. You go quiet, still, as you watch her. Then, you sigh and pinch the bridge of your nose. You lean back against the lip of your kitchen counter. “Fuck’s sake, Lin.”
It’s her turn to narrow her eyes. “What?”
“Okay.” You purse your lips in an angry approximation of a smile, then lower your hand and level her with a hard stare. “What we’re not doing… what you’re not going to do to me is treat this like a damn interrogation.”
“I am not–”
“You’re asking leading questions out of nowhere, you aren’t answering my questions when I ask you anything, and you’re not telling me what’s actually going on, what you’re feeling, or what the hell even started all of this in your mind,” you interject, ticking off each item on your fingers. “That’s not a conversation, that’s a damn interrogation. And what I am not okay with is you treating me like you’re a cop!”
Lin scowls. “I am a cop.”
“Not in our relationship you’re not!” you snap, eyes flashing with frustration. “Not with me, you’re not!” You close your eyes, force yourself to take a deep breath, and when you speak again, it’s apparent you’re trying to force yourself to stay calm. “You’re not a cop here.” You open your eyes and fix her with a pleading, hurt look. “You’re just Lin.”
Her heart catches against her ribs at the way your voice breaks on her name. She has to look away to keep her resolve from crumbling. “If you’re not okay with how I am–”
“If this is ‘how you are,’ then you can walk out that door until you have your head back on straight and decide to treat me like a damn person!” you snap, pointing stiffly at the door to your apartment. “I don’t care that you’re the Chief of Police, I don’t care how long you’ve been on the force, and I don’t care that you’re my girlfriend in this context. None of that gives you the right to browbeat me, especially not in my own fucking apartment!”
“Water is the element of change. The people of the Water Tribe are capable of adapting to many things.”
Right, Lin thinks, bitterly amused. Waterbenders flow with change –until they transform into a tidal wave and flatten you against the ground.
This isn’t how she wanted things to go (believe it or not). She really, truly didn’t want to hurt you or make you angry. All she wanted was some fucking clarity on just what was going on between the two of you –or, failing that, opening things up so you could take the out and let her try to move on. But you’re not taking the out –not even when you’re clearly angry with her. You’d told her that she could leave, but caveated it with “until you have your head back on straight.” Meaning, as far as Lin can tell, that you’re not interested in ending things.
Yet. Lin sighs and closes her eyes. I’m so fucking tired.
The instinct to run is there. She feels like a wild animal faced with a forest fire. The world is burning around her, there’s a clear path to safety, and every instinct she has is screaming to get the fuck out. However, she’s a Beifong. No, more than that, she’s Lin. And she has never approached anything in her life with the attitude of a coward.
Lin opens her eyes and looks over at you.
You’re watching her, arms crossed over your chest. Your expression’s stormy, lips pursed into a frown and eyebrows drawn together. But you’re not tapping your foot. Not checking the clock. And while she was processing, you weren’t huffing, or trying to get her attention. You’re waiting. Watching. Seeing what she’ll do next before you make a choice.
Probably more than I deserve. Lin grimaces, then does her best to gather her thoughts again. Okay, new plan. Just… try to figure this shit out.
She needs clarity. She needs to know why the fuck you act all distant around her in public but not in private. She needs to know if you’re aware of it, if there’s an explanation, or if you’re just fucking with her. She needs to know if you’re in or you’re out. Spirits, Lin’s never been good at gentle, or graceful –but all you seem to be asking for is straightforwardness, and she can do that.
She swallows hard, then undoes the buttons on her coat and takes it off. She drapes it over her arm, then walks stiffly over to your couch and sits. She leans forward, braces her forearms against her knees, then says it. “You act like you don’t want to be together.”
Your eyes widen. “I–”
“From where I’m standing –from what I can see–you do.” She stares at you, watches as the meaning of her words sink in and you go quiet, then continues. “You…” She sighs, then rubs the back of her neck. “You’re hot and cold. You’re all over the place. You never initiate dates –and when we do go out, you act like you’re scared to be seen with me. Like you don’t want me to touch you. But it’s not an affection thing, because when we’re in private, you’re all over me.” She pauses for a moment, waits to see if you’ll say anything.
You stay silent. Still. Your frown has dropped, and your expression looks braced. It looks like you have tears in your eyes.
Lin purses her lips, but continues. No sense in stopping now. “Maybe… maybe I should’ve been clearer from the start. I’m sorry that I wasn’t. I know I’m not… not the most open person, but…” She stops, mind stalling with resistance to the mere concept of opening up, of explaining any of this. Just fucking say it, Beifong. “I –I prefer actually… I want a certain level of public affection in a relationship.” She’s sweating. She doesn’t need a mirror to know her face is red. “If… if you were under the impression that I didn’t want you to be affectionate in public…”
You swallow hard, then shake your head. “No. That… no.”
Fuck. Lin does her best to keep her face neutral even as her heart shatters into billions of pieces in her chest. She nods slowly, realization numbing away the grief she knows she’ll feel later. She inhales slowly through her nose, then lets it out while counting to ten. “I’m sorry. I should’ve been clearer from the start.” Her heart clenches tight –ruined as it is–when a fat tear rolls down your cheek. “Maybe–” she clears her throat “–it would be best if–”
You clap one hand to your mouth and let out a choked sob.
She stops. Angi, this blows. She doesn’t want to hurt you –Spirits help her–but there’s no sense in letting things linger if the two of you aren’t compatible. Get it over with. Rip the bandaid off–
“Tui and La, this stupid fucking cycle.”
Lin blinks, startled. Then, she frowns when your words sink in. “What?”
“I mean, you’re not the first girlfriend I’ve had who’s told me this.” You let out a self-deprecating laugh, then snarl in frustration. “You think I’d fucking learn after how many times–”
She recoils, caught off guard by the intensity of your self-directed vitriol.
You’re ranting now, words rushing together so fast and mixed with sobs to the point that she can barely keep up. “–and maybe I should’ve been the one to be up front, and never let this happen so I didn’t hurt you–”
She says your name, then repeats it louder when you don’t stop. “Slow down, I can’t understand you–”
“–be so fucking naive, I should’ve been realistic about being defective–”
“Stop it!”
Her bark has you cutting yourself off with a gasp. You freeze for a minute. Then, your face and your knees crumple.
Lin’s off the couch and over to you in three long strides. She catches you before you hit the floor and holds you tight as you weep against her shoulder. “Easy. Just slow down and breathe, okay?”
“I’m sorry,” you gasp; you’re breathing so fast and hard that you’re bordering on hyperventilating. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry–”
“It’s okay,” Lin replies automatically. “Just breathe–”
“It’s not.” You let out a body wracking, shaking against her, then force out, “I –I hurt you, and I’m so sorry–”
“You didn’t–”
“I made you think that I didn’t want to be with you! That I wasn’t h-happy–”
“Stop interrupting me.” Lin winces at her tone, then tries to gentle her next sentence. “Just –calm down. Please. I don’t want you passing out, okay?” She strokes one hand over your hair, trying her best to soothe you. “Just breathe, sweetheart. Please.”
You listen for a few minutes; your body stabilizes and you shift your feet to hold more of your own weight. Your breathing slows and evens out. Then, you're shaking your head and pulling back so you can see her. “I’m so sorry, Lin–”
“You don’t–”
“But I do.” You look up at her, eyes red and watery and mournful. “I made you think that I didn’t want to be with you. That I didn’t care about you. And I am so sorry.”
“You–” Lin shakes her head. “I… I jumped to conclusions. And for that, I’m sorry.”
You grimace. “I still had to lay the pieces out.”
“We both played part in it, consciously or not.” Because she can’t fucking take you blaming yourself for everything that led up tonight. Granted, she still doesn’t have the clarity she came here to find, but she’s gathered enough to know that her initial conclusions were wrong. She lets out a shaky breath, then wracks her mind for what to say or do next. Fuck, how do I even begin to salvage this–
“I’ve got shit in my past, Lin.”
Her mind stalls, caught off guard by the sudden confession. Her hands flex against your shoulders as uncertainty rolls through her. Don’t we all?
You sniff, then offer her a pained, watery smile. “I mean –Tui and La, this is…” Your voice trails off, and then your expression shifts to something more pained, more tired. “Fuck.” You scrub your face with your hands, then sniff again. “I… I don’t know if I can explain this tonight.”
“It’s okay. You don’t have to–”
“I want to,” you cut her off, voice firm. “I just…” You sigh. “I need some time to think.”
Lin purses her lips. Her stomach’s churning, and her chest feels like it’s on fire. “If –if you’d rather end things, just say so.”
“I won’t, because I don’t want to.” You shake your head –then freeze. You look up at her slowly, expression pinched. “But… but if you want to…”
She takes a deep breath, then shakes her head as well. “I don’t.” Because she doesn’t. Even with logic, years of experience, and all her instincts screaming to get away before she gets hurt, she doesn’t want to let go. Not if you’re just as determined to hold on as she is.
You let out a sigh, tension unwinding from your body. Your expression slackens, and your shoulders drop a bit. You lean against her, laying your head against her shoulder. “Okay.”
Lin winds her arms around your shoulders. She closes her eyes when you wrap your arms around her waist, and lets herself indulge in simply holding you for a few moments.
She’s exhausted, though. She feels like she’s been gutted, like everything inside her has been ripped out and that she’s barely keeping herself upright –almost like a hangover, but without the benefit of booze. She needs space, needs some precious quiet to put her mind back together… but she doesn’t want to leave you. Not when you’re so obviously wrecked like this. (Not after she came in, basically ready to rip your throat out, and caused this whole mess in the first place.) Lin kisses the top of your head. “Do you want me to stay?”
You let out a shaky exhale, then slowly shake your head. “No.” You pull back and offer her a small, weak smile. “Not that I want to kick you out, but… I just need some time and space to think. To find the right words.”
“Of course.” Lin nods, then starts putting on her coat. She gets her arms in the sleeves, gets the coat situated on her shoulders –then stops. You need to apologize, Beifong. She grimaces, but sets aside her pride all the same. “And –I’m sorry. For coming in so hot.”
“It’s okay.” You quirk your mouth to the side, then duck your head. “And I’m sorry, too. For scaring you. For making you think I don’t care.”
She stiffens. It’s instinctive, mostly; she hadn’t said anything about being scared, and she’s not fond of feeling like she’s been seen through like a pane of glass. Relax. She’s supposed to know you. Lin forces herself to untense, then leans forward and kisses the top of your head again. “Apology accepted.”
“Thank you.” You hug her, then tip your head up and kiss her non-scarred cheek. “I’ll try to have something tangible for you in a couple days so you don’t overthink things to death.”
“I do not–”
“Yes, you do.” You smile softly at her, then laugh a little when she huffs. “You’re like me. We both like having clarity.”
She really can’t argue with that.
She nods –then, she lifts one hand and cups your cheek. “Is it alright if I kiss you?”
You smile and nod. “Yes.”
She kisses you, short and sweet, then pulls back. “I’ll let you rest.”
“Thank you. And you get some rest, too,” you say as you escort her over to your apartment door. “Don’t stay up half the night burying yourself in paperwork.”
“What makes you think I’d do that?” Lin asks drily, feigning innocence. She smirks, then chuckles at the flat look you give her. “I’ll do my best.”
“I suppose that’s all I can ask.”
Lin smirks and arches one eyebrow, then turns to leave–
You catch her arm and draw her back in for one last kiss.
She doesn’t melt into the kiss; she’s too tired, too emotionally overwrought for that. But it’s still comforting, and she can feel some of the tension ebb from her body.
You’re the one to end the kiss this time. It lingers longer than before, but you eventually pull away. “Good night, Lin.” You offer her a tired smile. “We’ll talk soon. I’ll let you know when I’m ready.”
She nods, then manages a “Good night,” back. She waits until your door closes and she hears the deadbolt slide into place, then strides down the hall towards the elevator.
She’ll have to walk home; she didn’t even think to call for a cab before leaving. Lin scowls and jams her hands in her coat pockets. Should’ve fucking drove here.
She’s borderline boneless by the time she makes it back to her apartment. Emotional confrontation never did suit her well. She locks her apartment door behind her, then lets out a ragged sigh. She slumps against the wooden portal, allowing herself to rest for a moment before shoving herself upright once more.
She keeps a supply of liquor in her living room, tucked safely away in a dark stained wooden cabinet. She pulls a bottle of bourbon out, pours herself a couple of fingers, then sets the bottle on the coffee table before she lets herself drop down on the couch. She knocks back half the portion, wincing slightly when she swallows and the alcohol burns down her throat. She’s not looking to get drunk (not like she did after Tenzin, or Amon). But she’s numb, and raw, and right now the scrape of alcohol in her throat is both grounding and soothing.
She stays quiet while she finishes the glass. She doesn’t bother turning on the radio, or even turning on a light. The sun’s pretty well down by now, but there’s still enough ambient light filtering in from the city. The rumble of Satomobiles and chatter from people on the sidewalks is sufficient background noise. So she sits in the dark, drinks her bourbon, and tries to nurse what feels like a gaping wound in the center of her chest.
It’s not over, she tries to reason with herself. Everything is fine. All couples have rough spots. You’re just phasing out of the honeymoon period.
Not that it does much good. Not in any important sense at least.
Don’t be stupid. You know something’s wrong –that’s the whole reason you went over there tonight. You should’ve cut and run, called your losses before everything went to shit. Besides, if something wasn’t wrong before, it certainly is now, since you went and fucking stepped in it. Maybe, if you’d just kept your mouth shut in the first place and let it ride out– Lin squeezes her eyes shut and wills that line of thinking to stop. Enough.
Not doing anything wasn’t an option. She’d learned that the hard way with Tenzin. And while detaching might be objectively safer, might’ve hurt less in the long run…
She growls under her breath. She sets her empty glass on the coffee table, then rubs her temples with her fingertips. Why do this have to be so fucking complicated?
She doesn’t want to end things. Despite her worries and old, buried hurts, she knows it. She wants to stay with you, wants things to work, wants to be happy with you.
Lin scowls. If that’s even possible. She swallows hard, then closes her eyes and lowers her head into her hands. Okay. Facts, not feelings. What’s the actual situation at hand?
Fact: There is some sort of delineation between how you act around her in public and how you act around her in private.
Possible outcome: The two of you have diverting preferences for PDA, which may yield to incompatibility as long term partners.
Fact: There is some sort of unaddressed trauma you’re dealing with as it relates to romantic relationships, displays of affection, or both. This trauma has, apparently, created a cycle of dysfunction in your romantic life –so much so that she’s not the first partner to bring the difference in private versus public attention to your notice.
Possible outcome:...
Lin frowns into her hands. I don’t know. She could tell, back at your apartment, that this is a deeply seated issue for you. But beyond what you’ve told her, she has nothing to go on. She has to trust you and take you at your word.
What’s worse –or better, she honestly can’t tell at this point–is that she does trust you. You’ve been nothing but painfully, earnestly honest with her since the two of you met. You’re not one for calculating guile, manipulation, or cunning schemes. It’s part of what she likes so much about you. She trusts you to be honest with her. To be direct. You certainly were earlier tonight when you called her out on her bullshit.
She can’t help but smirk, just a little, at the memory. That’s my girl. Lin lets out a long, exhausted breath, then lifts her head from her hands. Nothing else to do for now.
She decides against a second glass of alcohol. She has work tomorrow; more than that, she needs to sleep. She puts the bottle of bourbon back in the cupboard, rinses the glass, sets it on the countertop to dry, then heads to her bedroom.
She coasts through her bedtime routine with mechanical detachment. The overthinking part of her mind is blissfully absent, silenced by bourbon and the comfort of facts. She washes up as much as she needs to, changes, then turns out the light in her bedroom and climbs into bed.
Mercifully, she doesn’t dream.
Work is good. Paperwork and meetings with city officials are a pain in the neck, as always, but it’s routine. It keeps her mind busy, keeps her grounded. After yesterday, she needs to keep busy.
She stays late, too. It’s a bad habit, born out of being a workaholic and using said work to avoid anything that made her uneasy. But it’s not like there’s a shortage of reports to review, policy changes to amend, or case details to go over.
It’s late when she leaves her office –past eight. The sun’s low in the sky as she strides out of the department headquarters and over to her Satomobile.
The drive back to her apartment is routine. Uneventful. She makes a couple mental plans to put away some laundry she left out earlier and make dinner, but otherwise her goal is to spend the evening working on the paperwork tucked in her briefcase.
That is, until she opens her mailbox and realizes she has a letter from you.
She’s halfway to the elevator when she sees the nonstandard envelope; it’d been wedged between a few pieces of junk mail and this month’s utility invoice. A quick inspection reveals your name and address on the front –and then it’s all she can do to keep from ripping it open in the elevator. Patience, Beifong. She certainly doesn’t want to open a personal letter from her girlfriend in public. Especially if it contains bad news. She’s never been fond of getting emotional –especially the emotions that lean towards crying–in public spaces.
The letter burns in her hand the entire ride up to her floor. She can’t take her eyes off the envelope, tracing the smooth lines of your name and address over and over. She has nice penmanship.
She holds out until she locks the deadbolt of her apartment door behind her. Then, she uses her metalbending to summon her keys and uses the toothed edge of one to cut the envelope open. She tosses the rest of her mail on the counter, drops her briefcase next to the small stack of letters, and finally –finally–withdraws your letter from the envelope and unfolds it.
Lin,
Before I get into this, I want to apologize again–
She has to close her eyes and physically stop herself from groaning in pained frustration. This –this isn’t what she wanted. She’s realizing, unfortunately, that her approach last night was deeply flawed. All she wanted was some fucking clarity, but now you’re apologizing for trivial bullshit, practically dragging yourself across the coals in genuine penance; she’d rather have teeth pulled than go through this. Breathe. If she took the time to send you a letter, then it’s important. Lin inhales through her nose, holds the breath briefly, then exhales through her mouth before opening her eyes and resuming reading.
–to apologize again for last night. That things got to this state. I know that you’ll probably say that I don’t need to apologize, but I can tell that I’ve hurt you, and I don’t think you minimizing your own feelings will do anything good, so please just let me have this.
She bites down on the inside of her lower lip. Discomfort curls through her body; she feels exposed –even with still wearing head to toe metal armor. She takes another deep breath, forces herself to relax her grip on the paper when she realizes she’s leaving indents, then continues.
I wish I could say that I have this all figured out and that I can give you a complete explanation, and that we can get this completely behind us and move forward… but I can’t. I’m starting to wonder if this “quirk” of mine is ingrained deeper than I realized. Everytime I try to explain it or think about it, I feel like my thoughts get lost in a sea of mud. But, I do have some semblance of an explanation, so I’ll put it to you now.
The paper’s warped in a few spots. There’s some smeared bits of ink, some areas more translucent than the others.
Tear marks, Lin realizes with sadness. They’re tear marks.
I guess the easiest way to put it is that I don’t think growing up in the Water Tribe was healthy for me, at least as it relates to my sexuality. Their attitudes, while better than other regions, certainly aren’t the most progressive. I always thought that, since coming to Republic City, I’d put all those ideologies behind me. However, now I’m starting to wonder if it lingered more than I thought.
I’m so scared of being seen as queer in public. Not because I think someone would hurt me, but it’s… just not what I’m supposed to do. I know this probably sounds insane, but I feel like I’m going to get caught with my hand in the proverbial cookie jar. It’s why I lean away from being affectionate in public or arranging dates. I’m so afraid of “getting caught” and… something happening. I’m sorry I can’t explain it better; like I said, it’s like my mind turns to mud whenever I try to think about this.
She has to brace against her kitchen counter to keep from sinking to the floor. She’s not entirely sure what she’s feeling; shock, to be certain. A deep, overwhelming sense of realization and clarity as all the moments of your aversion and seeming apathy come into context. But deeper, underneath all of it, there’s a growing sense of horror, one that makes her stomach clench and churn.
She was fortunate to grow up in Republic City, in the circle of family and friends that she had. Even back then, Republic City had a vibrant queer community and laws protecting queer rights. Toph, certainly, hadn’t been fussed when she came out as bisexual as a teenager. Uncle Aang had made a point to carry forward the Air Nomad’s open acceptance of all sexualities and gender identities, and Aunt Katara had followed his lead. Uncle Zuko had quashed Fire Lord Sozin’s laws against gay marriage in the Fire Nation–
Spirits, she could probably list the advantages she’d had –advantages she’d had over you–as a queer woman for hours, now that she thinks about it. No wonder. She purses her lips. No wonder she wasn’t comfortable being affectionate in public.
Again, I am so, so sorry this splashed all over you, Lin. I know that it doesn’t change the inconsistencies in how I act, but I hope you’ll believe me when I say that I never intended to hurt you, or to make you feel like I didn’t want to be seen with you. Believe me when I say that I am so utterly happy to be your girlfriend –even when it’s scary.
She’s crying. Or damn close to it. Her eyes are watering, stinging.
I know we need to talk about this more. I still need some time to think, but I think I can have more of an explanation ready for you by the end of this week. If you want to talk, I’d appreciate you calling me once you get this letter and feel ready to discuss things. However, if you don’t want to talk –if this isn’t something you feel comfortable working through–then I understand–
Lin can’t remember a time she’s walked to her phone and dialed your number faster.
You pick up after a couple rings. There’s a shaky inhale once the call connects, and then your voice –soft, painfully hesitant–filters through the speaker. “Hi.”
“Hi.” Lin swallows, then looks down at your letter. “I –uh–I got your letter.”
“Oh.” There’s a beat of silence, and the muffled sounds of you shuffling. “Okay.”
“You–” Get your shit together, Beifong. “You said you wanted me to call. To set a time to talk.”
“Yeah. I did.” There’s another pause, and then you let out a small laugh. “I guess I didn’t think you’d read it right away. Or that you’d want to talk so soon.”
“Of course, I did,” Lin says, indignant; like she’d let something like this go unaddressed for so long. “And of course, I do.”
“Okay.” Another shaky exhale. “I guess –I guess I wasn’t sure if you’d be mad.”
Oh, sweetheart. “I’m not mad,” she reassures you. “I think–” She has to swallow again and blink a few times; her throat’s gone unexpectedly tight with emotion. “I think your letter helped, actually. It puts a lot into context for me.”
“O-oh.” There’s a sniff, and when you speak again your voice sounds strained. “I –I’m glad. I’m glad it helped. But there’s… there’s still more I’d like to say. I just need time to… find the words and stuff.”
“Okay. It’s okay.” She braces against one hand on the wall next to the phone mount. “You said you wanted to talk later this week?”
“Yeah.” Your voice sounds clearer now. More certain. “I was thinking maybe Saturday? You could come to my place for dinner.” You let out a soft laugh. “I could make you some proper Sea Prune stew.”
“You don’t need to cook for me,” Lin argues, shaking her head. “Not for something like this. I can get us take out.”
“I want to,” you insist. “It’ll give me something to do with all my nervous energy.”
That, she can understand. “If you’re sure.” She purses her lips, loathing this feeling of awkward uncertainty running through her. “I… could bring something for dessert?”
“If you want to.”
“I do.” I need even things out somehow.
“Okay.”
Lin’s suddenly remembering why she went through a spell of not dating whatsoever; these awkward, nebulous post-fight conversations always make her feel like she has ants crawling underneath her skin. Easy. One thing at a time. She takes a deep breath, then lets it out.  “Okay.” Agni’s sake, say something better than that!
“I’m really sorry, Lin,” you pipe up –and, Spirits, your voice is cracking like you’re going to cry, and that’s the last thing she can bear right now. “I really didn’t mean for you to get caught up in my bullshit.”
“I wouldn’t characterize having trauma around expressing your sexuality as ‘bullshit,’” Lin fires back.
“I’m –it’s not–”
“You wrote that you’re scared of being recognized as queer in public, to the point that it’s had a negative impact on every relationship you’ve had,” she interjects. “How is that not trauma?”
Your end of the line is quiet for a long time. Then, you sigh. “Well, I’m still sorry.”
“You don’t need to be–”
“Tui and La, Lin, just accept the apology,” you insist tiredly. “My actions, though caused by arguable trauma, hurt you. Just because there’s underlying reasons doesn’t change that you got hurt, and it doesn’t change that I’m still accountable for my choices.”
“But I’m not upset with you,” Lin argues. “Not with this. Not with it being a trauma issue.”
“Then just say you accept my apology! Quit telling me to not apologize to begin with!” You let out a tired laugh, then add, “Besides, when you could tell me what to do, anyway?”
She feels a smirk spread across her face at the clear impish challenge in your voice. She shifts to leaning against her shoulder, so that she’s sidled up next to the wall mount for the phone. “Oh, I seem to recall countless times where–”
“Focus, Lin.” Your smile is audible in your voice now. “You were going to accept my apology.”
She’s grinning, now. “Says who?”
“Says me, the girlfriend you adore and care about.”
Any other day, she’d argue with you to get a rise out of you, but she doesn’t want to push you too far right now. She lets out a soft chuckle, then concedes. “I appreciate and accept your apology. Thank you.”
“Yue above, it’s like pulling fucking teeth from you, isn’t it?” you mutter.
“The fuck else do you want from me, woman?” She smiles when you laugh –actually laugh, and it’s a relief to hear it–then sobers when she remembers that she owes you an apology, too. “For what it’s worth, I’m sorry, too. You were right. I was handling things like an interrogation. That wasn’t fair to you.”
“Apology accepted,” you answer, like it’s the easiest thing in the world. “I really appreciate that. Thank you.”
“Of course.”
There’s a pause, but the silence is more comfortable than before. Then, you ask, “Are we good?”
And that –that is a question she fucking hates. It’s so open-ended. What does “good” mean? Is it relative to the situation, or is there some definition of “good” that applies to the relationship overall that she should use instead? And, moreover, how is she supposed to know? Just because things are being worked through doesn’t inherently mean everything is “good.” Sometimes, working things out just drags more issues into the open, and then everything goes to shit as a result–
You’re overthinking this. Think smaller.
Okay. She’s not upset with you. You’re not upset with her –as far as she can tell, anyway. You’ve both apologized, you’ve both accepted each other’s apologies, there’s plans to talk things out more so there’s better understanding of the situation and what you both need. That… that seems good.
“We’re good,” Lin decides. “Are –are things good on your end?”
“We’re good on my end,” you assure her, voice warm.
“Good. I’ll see you on Saturday for dinner?”
“Yeah.” The two of you take a moment to hash out exactly when she’ll stop by your apartment, and then you sigh. “Not to just hop off, but I’m gonna go. I’m scheduled for rehab at Yue General tomorrow, so I need to rest.”
“By all means. I hope everything goes well.”
“Thanks. I hope things go well tomorrow for you, too.”
“Thank you.” She smiles softly. “Good night.”
“Good night, Lin.”
She hangs up when she hears the line click on your end, then sighs. Lin rubs the back of her neck with her hand. She straightens up, then looks down at the letter in her hand. She finishes reading it; there’s not much left, just you giving her an option out of the relationship if she didn’t want to hash things out and you apologizing again before signing the letter–then lets her eyes trace back over the sheet of paper. She’s noticing more tear spots on the paper, especially as she gets towards the bottom of the page, and she feels like her heart’s breaking all over again. She traces the outline of one of the more pronounced stains, then closes her eyes. Okay. Enough. You need to move forward with your evening. She opens her eyes, forces herself to fold the letter shut, then strides into her bedroom to grab a change of clothes before she showers.
Before opening her wardrobe, though, she detours to her nightstand. She opens the top drawer, then tucks your letter inside –between the left side of the drawer and a couple of books, where no one’s likely to notice it if they go snooping. She closes the drawer, then plants one hand against the top of her nightstand and braces against it. I was wrong.
She stays there for a moment, simply processing. Then, she smiles to herself –small, but there–and resumes getting ready for the rest of her evening.

okay but...
Tumblr media
You are a writer who's been receiving death threats for, like, ever. It's not a big deal (at least it isn't, according to the lazy cop you tried to report it too) so you try to forget about, shoving the letters into an old shoebox...only for more to come.
And more and more, soon enough coming to her home address and to your real name, not one of your pen names anymore.
It's only when someone actually tries to kill you that anyone takes it seriously.
And Chief Beifong, furious and embarrassed over the way you were brushed off time and time again, takes up the case personally (dragging along Mako, a few other officers, Bolin and Opal as well). So they take you to a safe house where you're watched 24/7, mostly with the chief as your personal bodyguard.
Which leads the two of you to talking and laughing and growing closer by each passing day, Lin a little amazed to find herself so close to you...you're both so different yet so in tune with one another, having never had this level of connection with, well, anybody.
Which is probably why she kissed you.
It was perfect and sweet and, once the bliss of it had faded away, she felt like such an idiot.
"I-I'm sorry, Y/N, I should leave-"
But you don't let her, pulling Lin back into that perfect kiss and forcing her to figure it out: Lin Beifong is falling in love with you.
And she doesn't know how to feel about that.
That's okay, you assure her, the two of you can take it sweet and slow and you'll help her figure it out. Of course that doesn't keep you from spending more time together, Lin becoming pretty good at sneaking from her room to yours in order to spend the night together, talking for hours and sneaking more kisses. It's amazing that you didn't get caught, though you came close a few times. One of those nights was interrupted by a knocking on your bedroom door, Lin grappling up to the rafters and Mako entering at your call.
"Sorry to interrupt your sleep, Miss Y/N, but I wanted to assure you that the security breach turned out to be nothing but an angry lemur. Sorry for the scare."
"It's fine, Mako, I'd rather it be a lemur than a crazed stalker!"
"I'll bet. Hey, have you seen the chief?"
A quick glance towards the ceiling and you see her hovering above you, blushing and hair messy, mouthing something in the dark.
'Lie.'
"I think...she wanted to walk the perimeter herself. You know what a perfectionist Lin can be!"
Shit. You shouldn't have called her Lin, that was way too personal for two people that were strictly professional...but Mako doesn't seem to notice at all, laughing about how crazy his boss can be and leaving. It's only when his footsteps have faded that Lin returns to you, falling from the rafters and onto the bed, her body caging your own.
"Hello there," you tease, smiling up at her.
"Hello," Lin replies.
Kissing one another, Lin makes a sudden move with her hand, the door locking firmly with the force of metal bending and keeping everyone else out.
"You must think me foolish, hiding like that."
"No, love, I don't," you reply softly. "If it's what you need then it's what I want."
And it feels so good to hear that, Lin kissing you and whispering into the night until you fall asleep. She remains awake a little longer, holding you close and smiling as the moonlight shimmers over your sleeping form.
Little Thoughts:
💚 It's Bolin that figured out what you two were up to, long before you announced it. Not Mako, not her officers, not even her own niece, but Bolin. He knows true love when he sees it, after all!
💚 She introduces you publicly during some stuffy event, the kind she typically hates. But she kind of loves this one...her in a suit, you in a green gown, she practically glows with you on her arm. And she doesn't care about the gossip columns all alight the next day, with talk of the Police Chief and her Poetic Paramore.
💚 You know that bit in B99, when Holt starts arguing with his husband because he's stuck on night shift and misses him/needs to bone? And Rosa calls him on it, leading him to yelling at her in front of everyone??
Tumblr media
Yeah, that happened with Mako down the line. And like Rosa, he was right.
💚 Toph really likes you. Way more then she likes her son-in-law, which Lin is a little pleased about. But you are, after all, totally loveable so she's not surprised.
💚 I think Reader writes a lot of different things in a lot of different genres (namely poetry, romance, and murder mysteries), but when her relationship with Lin becomes known to Republic City, people can't help but notice the similarities to the Chief and the love interest in one of her romance books, a detective (who's totally different btw! Rin's a fire bender, not an earth bender 🙃). People legitimately ship you and, while she doesn't get it, Lin agrees that you are cute together.
💚 She's got a morning person at all but mornings with you are nice. You don't wake her, letting her sleep. Lin gets up eventually, to coffee and a simple breakfast and you in one of her shirts, smiling at the sight of you.
💚 I imagine you both have...complicated family lives and that's a big bonding point. Hers is messy but loving nonetheless and she's grateful for that but you're might be worse, someone that makes her far more protective over you.
💚 With Reader being a creative type, I imagine she gets along really well with Huan in particular (he may have even read something of hers} and Opal, who she got to know before. Lin thinks it's very cute.

As soon as you got back home to your apartment, you collapsed on your bed, feet hanging off the edge due to the fact that you hadn't taken off your shoes. Your limbs felt too heavy to lift anymore, and you desperately wanted to just sink into the bed. Why was it always the end of the week that was the hardest day to get through?
The sound of the front door opening and closing echoed loud enough for you to hear it, and you preemptively rolled over on the bed so that you weren't taking up the middle. Your wife's metal shoes clacked against the floor as she walked towards the bedroom to join you. Groaning, she stretched out on the bed slightly less unceremoniously than you had a few minutes prior, but with no less exhaustion in her frame than you possessed. She threw an arm around your waist and pressed her lips to your temple briefly.
"How was your day?" you asked.
"Terrible," she replied with a long exhale. "The Creeping Crystals are really testing my patience this week. After what Avatar Korra did for Jargala, I would have thought she would have had the decency to not cause problems for at least a couple months."
"What kind of trouble is she causing?"
"Same old garbage - now that the Triple Threats are scrambling without Tokuga, she wants to take some of their territory," she said, rolling her bright green eyes at the predictability of it all. Rubbing a hand over her face, she braced herself up on her forearms and looked at you. "How was work for you?"
You rolled onto your back and hugged your aching arms. "My patients get increasingly ridiculous every day. Some entitled mom came to me in a huff worried about her daughter, and do you know what was wrong with her?"
"Hm?"
"This little kid somehow got a tiny little bead stuck in her ear. A bead. I had a construction worker from the evacuee residences waiting for me to set and heal his broken arm, and this witch of a mom is yelling at me that her poor little angel is a top priority when really all I had to do was use water to flush the bead out."
Lin groaned in sympathy. "The depths of people's stupidity never cease to amaze me." She rested her chin on her forearms for a moment before she turned back to you. "Did you eat anything since your lunch break?"
"No, did you?"
"No."
Closing your eyes, you shook your head. "I don't wanna get up, and I don't want you to have to get up either."
"Come on," she said anyway, reluctantly pulling herself up and off the bed. "If we make dinner together, it'll get done faster which means we'll come back to bed faster."
Despite the overwhelming desire you had to just sink into your bed and never get up, you hauled yourself up and changed out of your work uniform into a comfy blue sundress. Lin took off her metalbending gear as well, left in just a light green undershirt and loose, dark gray pants. The two of you walked to the kitchen and got to work. A pan floated out of one of the top cabinets and set itself down on the stove in response to her metalbending it down. She flicked her other hand to turn the metal dial of the radio so it lit up with life and cheery music filtered out of it.
You opened the fridge and asked, "What'll we have tonight? Shrimp fried rice?"
"Sounds good," she said, heating up the pan.
Nodding, you took out the ingredients - enough between the two of you to eat without leftovers. Lin hated leftovers. Food tastes best the first time you eat it, she'd say, in the same way she told her metalbenders, Orders are followed best the first time you hear them. You didn't mind, though, also preferring not to eat the same thing two nights in a row or risk forgetting about the food and letting it get spoiled.
While you waited for the onions and cauliflower rice to cook on the pan after mostly cooking through the shrimp and eggs, you put your arms around Lin's waist from behind and swayed with her to the beat of the music. You hummed and pressed your lips to the junction between her neck and shoulder, and she wiggled slightly in your hold at the contact. Her weakness was that spot right there, highly ticklish when it was kissed by her loving wife. Of course, you'd never tell anyone else about that little secret.
"I'm trying to cook," she chuckled when you kissed her there again, knowing how she would react. "Unless you want me to burn the rice."
You conceded as she turned over the rice, reaching forward to bring back the eggs, shrimp, and vegetables for her to stir in with the rice. "I could use a nice, hot meal after today."
"Aren't you glad we got out of bed, then?"
"No, I think it would be best if we could both stay in bed and the food magically cooks itself," you answered honestly. You let go of her waist to add the other ingredients into the pan. "I envy Korra for her Spirit World trip. When's our next vacation?"
She huffed out a laugh. "Aside from being too injured to keep working, neither of us have taken a vacation in over fifteen years. Though, maybe we should soon. Su keeps pestering me about how much she wants to properly meet you since we didn't have much time to talk at Varrick and Zhu Li's wedding."
"Hm," you said ponderously, getting out the plates and utensils. "A vacation at Zaofu. How much time do you think we could take away? I know my boss begs me to take time off at this point, and I imagine your metalbenders are much the same."
"A couple weeks would be good." She evenly divided the food between the two of you on the plates before setting it back down on the stove and turning off the heat. "The real question is, how long will both of us last being out of work?"
You laughed and took one plate while she took the other to your small dining table. "Maybe it's good Suyin will be there to force us to relax. We could both use it."
"Plus, getting to spend more time with you sounds like a pretty good deal to me," she added lowly, raising her eyebrows suggestively.
Recognizing that look in her eyes, you purred back, "Sounds good to me, Chief!"

Sunlight
The sun is shining through our sheer white curtains casting a warm glow over Lin’s sleeping form.
She looks so at peace, normal scowl lax and replaced by a serene smile. I gently place my hand on her scared cheek and scoot closer to her, so our foreheads touch.
She slowly opens her Jade eyes looking at me with tiredness written all over her face but her eyes still shine with love and kindness.
“I’m sorry I feel asleep, I was waiting for you.” I whisper quietly.
“It’s okay.” Lin touches our lips together softly and smiles into the kiss “I am the one who should apologise I worked late again.”
“It’s okay.” Pulling Lin closer by her waist I warp my arms around her while she buries her head in the crook of my neck and sighs.
I feel myself start to dose off until Lin starts to press feather light kisses along my neck.
As her kisses start to get more daring I can feel her latch onto my pulse point starting to suck gently.
“Don’t leave a mark please.”
I can hear the smirk in her voice as she speaks “Why not?”
“It’s too warm for turtlenecks, plus I never get to leave marks on your neck.”
At my statement Lin lifts her head to look at me.
“So leaving marks all over my chest, stomach and thighs is not enough? Guess I have to get an armour with a higher collar then.”
“Yes.”
Lin grins at me and leans down to connect our lips again and mumbles into our kiss.
“I’ll take care of it right when I get to work my dear.”
Please if you have any Fanfic requests comment or send me a message. I’m currently struggling with ideas and would appreciate a challenge
