uh what else what else....hmm [golden rule is treat others the way you want to be treated, so if you’re a creator yourself, just give whatever you would want seen in the comments of your stuff! I mean that’s how I came up with all this...]

Point out the details! I mentioned earlier about quoting stuff from fics (that stuff is just 👌👌👌 so delicious) but I’m pretty sure (I’m not an artist myself don’t quote me) that the exact same effect is present when you talk about details in art or something. So talk about that pretty snowflake in the background! Or that piece of dialogue that made you laugh. Just a simple nod to the details is a big difference between saying “I like this” versus “I like this thing that you took the time to make the effort you put into the details did not go unnoticed”

this might vary from person to person, though personally I love when people are like “The way you write imagery is so good please do more!!” so just give a little nod to someone like “The way you draw this character is amazing please do more” or something like that

I wouldn’t go as far as to give criticism (although personally I’m the type of person that loves the occasionally critique for future reference, cause it means that you care as much as I do about the quality of my work)

But along the same lines as the details thing, a nice nod to a creator about what they’re doing right is sooooo good! makes the butterflies flutter

Character Development – Part C

Seeing how I myself struggled over the years to find some reference in terms of character sheets, I decided to share my personal one with all of you. This character sheet is of course not the ultimate guide you'd never find anywhere else and I suppose that some people may want to add or remove some parts. However, in general, I think of this as pretty much complete. I will also give a short commentary on various points. Because what I struggled with most in the beginning was being clueless about what to write for each point.

We will start with General Information and I will post the others one by one after this.

General Information

Name The given name of your character.

Surname Your character's last name.

Nickname And abbreviation or another name somebody gave them (aside from their proper name).

Birth Name Did your character get married or was adopted and received a different last name? Did they apply for a name change at some point in their life? If so, what was their intial last name and/or given name? This info goes here!

Nationality The country/kingdom/empire/etc. your character comes from. This is not necessarily where they live now!

Gender In here fits any info about gender, be it male/female or agender/non-binary/etc. This will also be the spot where you can fill in the genders for (maybe) non-human characters or fictional genders like in the popular alpha/beta/omega universe.

Age This is, of course, where you put in how old your character is. If they pretend to be older/younger you can put the real age i.e. in brackets.

Birth Date The day, month and year your character was born. This can also be some made up dates like 63th of Quanko in the year 2410.

Birth Place Not the exact spot but the village/town/city that they were born in.

Astrological Sign This can either be western signs like libra/cancer/etc., eastern signs like rabbit/tiger/etc. or astrological signs you thought of yourself.

Childhood Home Where did they live as a child/until they left home? How long did they live there? What did it look like?

Current Residence Opposing the childhood home is the current residence: The place your character lives when your story starts. This can be a street (if they didn't leave the town/city), a different city or even a different country. Give this as many details as you need!

Home Description What does the character's home look like? Is it a one-room apartment? Or maybe a house? How is it furnished (modern/vintage/rococo-style/...)?

Neighbors Does your character have neighbors? What are their names, ages and occupations?

Occupation This is where you describe your character's job; in detail if you need. What do they do? Do they like their job? Is it satisfying? Will they keep their job until they retire?

Finances Don't confuse this with income. This point illustrates all kinds of source of income from different places (salary/child support/earnings from rental properties/...). How much can they spend in a month/year according to those earnings?

Income This point concentrates purely on the size of salary from the character's main job. So, how much do they earn in a month/year?

Skills This differs greatly from the point abilities. Skills are things a character acquire after repeated learning. So, if they train martial arts/archery/calligraphy/..., the character will probably master that skill after some time.

Abilities In contrast to skills, abilities don't necessarily need to be learned. They are more likely dormant or active capacities that the character was born with. This can be things like dexterity/courage/quickness/cleverness/etc.

Sexuality As with gender, this can, of course, be heterosexual/homosexual and everything in between or something completely different.

Distinctive tics or mannerisms This will come up with the physical information again, but the ones for this point are things that can be recognized pretty quickly. Possible mannerisms could be a character who never let's anyone touch their bag. Or maybe someone who always tucks a pen behind their ear.

Current Hobbies A pretty simple point: What do they do in their free time? What do they enjoy even though they might not be able to do it very often?

Dominant Hand Although this seems a bit random, this point is especially interesting for mystery writers. This also isn't limited to the hand they write with but also other things like opening a bottle/throwing a ball/holding a knife or fork/etc.

Handwriting Rather self-explanatory. What does their handwriting look like? Is it sloppy/neat/careful/curvy/block letters/etc.? Can they write at all?

Catchphrase Not exactly necessary for every story, but what is the phrase your character would say most often throughout your story? This is often used in anime (i.e. Prince of Tennis or Sailor Moon).

Favorite Foods & Drinks Your character's favorites are more or less endlessly expandable. Favorite foods and drinks are usually what's of most interest for your story, but you can expand it with favorite colors/weather/day of the month/clothing/season/etc.

Favorite Saying This shouldn't be confused with the catchphrase. The favorite saying is more likely a quote of someone famous or someone close to them according to which they live.

Appointments Appointments covers everything that your character attends on a regular basis. This can be long-term treatment, voluntary work, lessons, etc.

Review of Kaitogirl’s Underfell

Plot & Other Details

Like many works that trace Frisk’s journey through the Underground, the plot is pretty simple and linear. Frisk rewinding time when killed slightly complicates the timeline, but Frisk has only died three times so far.

As Underfell works go, the work is mild. As expected, there's sometimes blood (though rarely in large amounts), and plenty of swearing. Despite the setting, characters are often mean, cynical, and aggressive rather than outright evil or murderous, and are easily pacified. Situations are also rarely very frightening or violent. Along with its simple, rounded, relatively well-lit style, it's much milder than HorrorTale or the famous Flowey is Not a Good Life Coach.

Characterization

Frisk

Given the situation, Frisk is rather bold, though still friendly and pacifistic. At first, they think they’re dreaming, explaining their unworried approach. However, when Toriel kills them in an escape attempt, they realize they’re not dreaming and break down, sobbing. Yet they quickly recover after dreadful realizations, fights and even death, becoming a happy camper once more. Literally: it's like Frisk is just an experienced camper lost in a bear-filled forest, rather than a strange land of monsters trying to kill them. They even feel safe enough for Flowey to read books and history plaques to them, despite Flowey’s reminder they’re in a hurry. (This might be explained by Frisk being too young to understand the danger they’re in, or realize their power makes them unkillable)

While friendly and forgiving, sometimes Frisk is insistent, such as yanking Flowey out of the ground to put him in a boot and thus carry him into Toriel’s house.

Flowey

In many Underfell works, monsters' morality is basically flipped: good characters are now 'evil'. Thus, the murderous, sociopathic Flowey is now a helpful companion, often carried by Frisk. Though that's true here, Flowey is not sweet or innocent. He is prone to anger, frustration, and indignant outbursts, and sometimes intimidates weaker monsters with a scary face. He says he "can't console people", and smacks Frisk to make them stop sobbing. Flowey knows "in this world, it's kill or be killed", but is sad and resigned about it. Overall, he might be as Flowey once was before choosing murder runs.

In this work, Asriel was once a jerk: he took Chara to his parents while eagerly asking about killing them. Thus, it's likely Flowey is only 'good' because Asriel was once bad. Notably, Flowey mentally calls himself 'Asriel', apparently only coming up with 'Flowey' when Frisk asked for his name.

Toriel

As expected, Toriel is meaner and more violent than in canon. Indeed, Flowey is afraid she'll kill him and Frisk if she spots the two of them, and is surprised when she doesn't. It's likely she outright kills monsters in the Ruins: Flowey notices one hallway is "dustier than usual", and afterward her clothes have dust stains. She’s more disdainful of Flowey than in canon, calling him a 'weed', threatening him, and initially refusing to let him into her house.

Her sadness and long isolation apparently damaged her social skills, or even sanity. Her pie is very burnt, and has so much cinnamon it makes Frisk cough. Having run out of butterscotch, she put in monster dust instead, which isn't at all reasonable. Though she would surely know how bad the pie was, she aggressively insists Frisk eat it and not even think of throwing up afterward. When Frisk tricks her to escape, she calls them ungrateful and burns them alive at the exit.

Yet, she can still be kind: she sheltered Frisk, gave them food, tucked them in and gave them a plushie as they slept. (Though she glares at Flowey for noticing the latter two) Frisk points out her kindness in the fight: they say they don't really want to leave, and that's she's not evil, just lonely and sad. Toriel is stunned. She breaks down, sobs, and says: "Why are you being...so nice to me?” However, she is so deranged she soon "realizes" Frisk's kindness is a trick, a prelude to greater horrors, and she chases them out of the Ruins.

Papyrus & Sans

Sans hasn’t actually changed much. He has a taste for meaner, darker jokes. Compared to other characters, he is uncommitted: he’s neither especially helpful nor harmful to Frisk, though a few of his actions could have gotten Frisk hurt or killed anyway. While he does kill Frisk with an electric shock from a joy buzzer, when Frisk reloads and refuses to shake his hand, he guesses that the buzzer would have probably killed them anyway.

Here, Sans definitely knows about Flowey. Though he knows Alphys had been looking for Flowey, he didn't report him: he found it more entertaining to keep seeing Alphys throw a fit. (Notably, he asks Frisk's name, unlike in canon.)

Papyrus is even more confident and egotistic than before, as shown by the even more muscular snow sculpture of himself. While canon Papyrus never dismissed others for his self-enhancement, this Papyrus does just that, calling Frisk a "pathetic weakling". He is still a skeleton with high standards: while more vicious, he insists on fair puzzles and fights. (despite talking about how much he'll benefit from capturing Frisk)

Art

Though not as polished and precise as other comics, the art improves over time. Indeed, there's a big jump in quality on the last page of the Snowdin arc and later in Waterfall, too. The lineart is crisper, the shading better, and the colors richer. (if very purple) While the hand-lettering has tight and irregular spacing at first, it improves a lot midway through the Snowdin arc.

As appropriate for an "edgy" setting, characters are toothier and spikier, to the point even Moldsmal and Papyrus's house (using icicles) are spiky. As expected for Underfell, characters look scarier, with duller, darker colors. Red and black (unsurprisingly) dominate the work: not only are many characters’ clothes red and black, but even attacks are often red. (Except fire, oddly enough: that's blue instead.) Colors are changed to darker, duller, and redder shades overall.

The right image illustrates about half the colors in Snowdin.

Often, this results in shades one could broadly call "purple", especially reddish purple. For example, the walls of the Ruins are reddish-purple, and sometimes Snowdin's snow is purplish-taupe. The purple-ification is especially obvious with the Echo Flowers (once cyan, now phlox), Waterfall (once dark blue/indigo, now dark bluish purple) and the gratuitous purple Moldsmals. Indeed, it's so purple one could easily call this work "that purple Underfell".

Yet, one could also call this "that low-green Underfell". Other than Flowey's (often dull) green stem, there is practically no green in the Ruins. Things get greener in Snowdin, though the trees are a fairly dull shade. (Oddly so: the trees were actually blue in-game). In Waterfall, green becomes rare once again.

Yellow and orange are rare, too, if less so. Frisk's skin is not mango-yellow, but an only slightly yellowish beige. Monster Kid is mostly a washed-out orange (who gets even less yellow by Waterfall), and wears red-and-black clothes. Even monsters' outfits have less yellow, such as Papyrus, Shopkeeper Temmie and especially the Nice Cream Man. In some cases, though, the work adds yellow: Napstablook and Toriel have yellow eyes, Sans has a yellow tooth, and Undyne's armor has yellow accents.

One can get used to the limited color scheme over its hundreds of pages. But the bright, green-and-yellow palette of Flowey’s dream sequence in Page 126 and Waterfall’s yellow history-plaque flashbacks remind the reader of the limited colors.Even the comic itself lampshades its dark, limited palette: Papyrus's color tile puzzle is various shades of grey, black, and white.

Conclusion

For those who want something a little scarier and unhappier than canon Undertale, but aren't quite ready for darkfic or standard Underfell approaches, Kaitogirl's Underfell is a perfect middle ground.

Chapter 6

Music

“The most evident gift from great music is its sound. But the very absence of sound is just as important. Remember: Music is the shaped sound between silences.” (Janaro & Altshuler p.147)

I chose this quote because it is so true. The “silence” section of this chapter really stuck out to me because I don’t think anyone notices the silence in music. I just thought that was interesting. One piece of music that I thought of while reading this quote is To Build a Home by The Cinematic Orchestra. I listened to the song on repeat when my first boyfriend broke up with me. Crying. Lots of crying. Now when I listen to the song, I have a different feeling about it; it’s a great piece of music. I can appreciate the pauses and the silence more in similar songs like this one.

I chose this quote because I didn’t realize how music has been integrated into my school learning since the very beginning. I almost can’t concentrate on my school work if I don’t have music playing in the background of my mind. I wonder if there’s a reason for that. I included a list of the months because I feel like everyone knows the alphabet song, but less people remember or maybe even weren’t taught the months in the year song. Honestly, the song is how I still remember the months of the year in order. I couldn’t find the exact version of the song that I taught but the one linked below is the closest to it.

I absolutely love this quote. I feel this way a great way to end the chapter. What this quote means to me is that; everyone is constantly consuming that involves some kind of music or artificial sound such as tv, but no one takes the time to enjoy the silences in life such as listening to a rain shower while reading a book. I spend most of my time with myself in silence because I don’t have a voice so going back to my second blog post for this chapter, I try to fill the void with music when I’m doing my homework. Needless to say, I’m very comfortable in silence and even though I try to be listening to something all the time, I appreciate the silence including my own silence. I would like to share one more song with you, it’s called Silence by Marshmello.

We chart the greatest influencers on the twenties’ style scene.

Before the likes of Katharine Hepburn and Bette Davis brought us the iconic 1930s fashion styles, there were the super chic styles of the roaring twenties. From the ultra-glam flapper girls to the first waves of cool androgyny, 1920s fashion was all about liberation, trying new things and having a whole lot of fun in the process.

After World War One, women’s style loosened up (literally) as the corsets came off, skirts got shorter , and thanks to a certain Coco Chanel, trousers for women were in for the very first time.

While comfort was king, there was still a decadence to Gatsby-era fashion – think Art Deco motifs, rich velvet or satin dressese embellished with pearls and gems. Showgirls like Josephine Baker, Clara Bow and Greta Garbo became the key trendsetters of the decade.

Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel’s 1920s fashion

We are eternally grateful to Mademoiselle Coco Chanel for so many definitive 1920s fashion styles, and some of the greatest sartorial inventions; the little black dress, skirt suit, costume jewellery, espadrilles… But her greatest, most overarching influence? The liberation of women’s clothing and the concept of casual chic in the 1920s. Chanel led the trend for a flatter, corset-free bust, a streamlined silhouette with no hyper-waistline and she popularised trousers for women. Next time you let it all hang out after a huge dinner, you can thank this woman.

Clara Bow’s 1920s fashion

Here’s one of the original IT actresses, Clara Bow, modelling an ideal 1920s fashion look. The ultimate flapper girl, she looks ready to break into a Charleston any moment, doesn’t she? The slimming chevrons and dropped waist became style trademarks for all flapper girls by day, and were amped up in sequinned versions for the Gatsby glam parties at night.

Colleen Moore’s 1920s fashion

Silent film actress Colleen Moore basically invented the bob. Women around the world copied the black block cut that she and a few other early adopting actresses made popular, making her one of the greatest beauty influencers of all time – although 1960s fashion would see an even shorter popular style in the pixie crop. She’s pretty much the reason so many of us opt for bob hairstyles today. Colleen loved her bob so much, in fact, that she kept that haircut until the day she died in 1988. Talk about a signature style…

Louise Brooks 1920s fashion

Party girl Louise tried and tested all of the trends the decade had to offer, and we’ve got her down as an Alexa of the decade. She popularised the bob, got women to see how fab trousers can be and was one of the first actresses to speak openly about her experiments with her sexuality. Palazzo trousers are still a staple of holiday style.

Josephine Baker’s 1920s fashion

Josephine Baker is the woman who inspired Beyonce’s booty-shake. How cool is that? The original showgirl was famous for her ‘banana dance’, plus she was a spy and she owned a pet cheetah, which she used to walk in Paris. A queen of accessorising, the Jazz Age beauty sometimes wore little else on stage, and by day she worked an Art Deco print like no other.

Greta Garbo and Valentina Schlee 1920s fashion

On the set of The Temptress, actress Greta Garbo was without doubt one of the decade’s most alluring film stars. While many actresses sexed it up to appeal to male audiences, Greta’s sense of style meant that women, too, were fascinated by her beauty. Her favourite designer was Valentina Schlee, and she went on to epitomise old Hollywood glamour.

Gloria Swanson’s 1920s fashion

Dripping with glamour in her spliced gold dress and bejewelled headband, Gloria Swanson was the picture of 1920s fashion. Never knowingly understated, her extravagant dress sense meant that she was one of the decade’s stand-out style star – a Lady Gaga for the Jazz Age, if you will.

Dorothy Sebastian and Joan Crawford’s 1920s fashion

As women’s style became more relaxed, there was more emphasis than ever before on sportswear and swimwear. We were still a long way off from the bikini here; a staple part of 1940s fashion, it wasn’t invented until 1946. But for the first time women could move freely and actually be active in their activewear, so all in all it was a pretty revolutionary decade.

Pola Negri’s 1920s fashion

The first European actress to be invited to Hollywood, silent film star Pola was responsible for introducing all sorts of our favourite fashion and beauty trends to popular culture. She loved headgear, put fur boots on the fashion map and even introduced the world to the concept of red painted toenails.

Dorothy Mackaill’s 1920s fashion

As trousers for women became the norm, the androgynous look was the coolest trend to be seen in. Brit actress Dorothy worked a full tuxedo on the set of The Crystal Cup, making a style statement that women everywhere wanted to buy into.

Mary Pickford’s 1920s fashion

The square cut was the neckline of the decade, flattening the bust line after years of ample cleavage in corsets. Co-founder of film studio United Arts, Mary Pickford was a 1920s heroine for women at work, and a power-dressing one at that.

Anita Page’s 1920s fashion

Queen of pearls Anita, pictured below right with actresses Joan Crawford and Dorothy Sebastian for the film Our Dancing Daughters, reportedly received 35,000 fan letters in a week during her heyday. Remember folks, these were the times when fan-girls didn’t have Twitter or emojis to express their love for a star, so these were physical, hand-written notes of adoration. Amazing, right?

Jean Arthur 1920s fashion

Jean was the 1920s’ too cool style icon and queen of screwball comedy. She was publicity shy – ‘I’d rather have slit my throat’ than do an interview – and worked an androgynous slick look. Think crisp white shirts and relaxed tailored trousers here.

Fay Wray 1920s fashion

Before she became an international superstar in 1933’s King Kong, Fay was a young flapper girl with a penchant for Art Deco jewellery like no other. Just look at that gorgeous choker and all of those stencil-like bracelets.

Zelda Fitzgerald 1920s fashion

Mr Gatsby himself, author F. Scott Fitzgerald declared his novelist wife Zelda to be ‘the first American Flapper.’ Her creativity, independence and attitude were exactly what being a flapper girl was all about. You didn’t think it was only about those glitzy dresses now, did you?
