Ability, Motivation and Attitude | self improvement tips for success
Ability is your capability in certain areas.  Motivation determines what you do with your ability.  Attitude determines the quality of your outcomes when you use your ability and are motivated.
In my personal business coaching practice in The Woodlands and in Houston I have observed time and again the connection between these three areas and how they impact individual and team performance.Ability is important.  It is a great place to start when looking at what you are capable of accomplishing.  But it is not everything.
Motivation, by itself, is not enough.  Motivation gets you going in using your ability, yet it doesn’t guaranty you are headed down the right path.Attitude is what takes your ability and motivation and keeps it on track.  Attitude says that if the track your ability and motivation are taking you on is not working, that you will try something else.  With the right attitude, you are willing to make the necessary adjustments on your road to success.
Adjustments are not failures.  Adjustments are changes that are necessary to keep you relevant.  If you don’t adjust you fail.  You fail because you are becoming irrelevant.  You are in a race to the bottom.
In returning to attitude: the right attitude harnessed to your ability and motivation will position you to create the steam to drive your engine of performance that will move you from ordinary to extraordinary.

Lessons in Leadership: Soaring with the Winds of Life
In learning how to fly an airplane, one of the first lessons has to do with understanding winds. Winds come in basically three types; Head winds – those hit you right in the face Tail winds – those from behind Cross winds – those at angles from the side I believe the challenges we face in life and in business model these three types of wind as well. If we consider all the forms of challenge…

University of Houston leaders announced this week they would close the school's Diversity and Inclusion office and LGBTQ Resource Center on Aug.31 in light of recent legislation passed to erode diversity programs and services in the state. Instead, UH is creating a Center for Student Advocacy and Community to comply with state law. The university's announcement comes months before the state law is set to go into effect on Jan.1.
Filed as SB 17, the law bans diversity, equity, and inclusion offices in higher education institutions and prohibits departments from implementing mandatory training that includes content or programs referencing race, color, ethnicity, gender identity or sexual orientation. The law passed earlier this summer in the 88th legislative session and was signed by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott in June.
With its Center for Student Advocacy and Community, the University of Houston is set to become one of the first Texas higher education institutions to make swift changes ahead of the law's effectiveness. Interim Vice President for Student Affairs Daniel M. Maxwell released an email statement to UH community members on Wednesday saying the new on-campus center will be open for all students regardless of race, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
"In preparation of this law going into effect, student affairs staff and administrators began working this summer in consultation with other departments and offices across campus to ensure that our programs, activities, and services satisfy the requirements of SB17," Maxwell said.
BREAKING NEWS: Tropical storm Idalia to impact Cuba today then strengthen to major hurricane with potential landfall in Florida early Wednesday

"In preparation of this law going into effect, student affairs staff and administrators began working this summer in consultation with other departments and offices across campus to ensure that our programs, activities, and services satisfy the requirements of SB17," Maxwell said.
"This center will make available wide-ranging advocacy, a support network for both undergraduate and graduate students, comprehensive basic needs services and resources, and facilitate a variety of events and programs to foster student success, achievement, and community building."
According to Maxwell, the center will specifically focus on academic access, leadership development, summer bridge programs, student success coaching, and various mentorship programs. The university released a draft policy on DEI initiatives and frequently asked questions about the law. The UH community is encouraged to give feedback on the plan and is open to input until Sept.20.
"They will be signed and finalized by University leadership shortly after the community review concludes," UH Senior Director of Media Relations Chris Stipes said in a statement to Chron.
In a meeting with the UH System Board of Regents, Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs and General Counsel Dona Cornell explained to board members what they are permitted to do or say under the law. According to Cornell, state leadership would audit higher education institutions every four years to ensure they comply with SB17, and the UH system itself would conduct its own self-auditing process.
"You can't say, for example, 'commitment to diversity' in hiring," Cornell said. A few exceptions to the bill include academic course instruction, guest speakers, data collection, student recruitment or admissions, scholarly research, and more. Overall, Cornell described the law as "broad."
"It is a very emotional issue for a lot of people, and I recognize that, so we really tried to work with each constituency, if you will, across the system," Cornell said. "There are some things that we will no longer be doing, but the large majority of the programming that we provide and the activities that we have will continue."

Exes Gone Wild: Which Jilted Parties will have their Revenge on Wild Card Weekend?
Ah revenge games. The age old “I’ll show them they were wrong” narrative that makes football almost as good as a parlay with a full paycheck. This narrative becomes even juicier when it occurs in the playoffs. Not only can you deal an L to the team that dumped you, but you can ruin their season, their Super Bowl hopes, and a year’s worth of hard work in the process.
This year’s Wild Card Weekend contains not one, not two, not three, but you guessed it FOUR postseason revenge narratives. Today we’ll dive into each one of those, explore what makes them so damn compelling, and give our thoughts on who will prove they were the one that got away and who will prove to be complete losers that don’t deserve love at all.
Texans vs Browns
Despite the Houston Texans’ leadership shamelessly covering up Deshaun Watson’s rampant predatorial tendencies and rewarding him with a life changing contract while he sexually violated every masseuse he could find on Instagram, Watson just wasn’t all that appreciative and tried to force his way out of the organization via trade demand at the conclusion of the 2020 season.
The Texans dug their heels in determined to get what they viewed as commensurate value for a Quarterback of Watson’s caliber despite mounting civil lawsuits. Eventually, the Texans struck a deal that resulted in 3 First Round Picks for Houston and an unprecedented fully guaranteed $230 million for Watson. That deal largely shaped the current Texans which find themselves in the postseason after somehow striking gold on another Quarterback in the draft and enlisting hometown hero Demeco Ryans as their Head Coach.
This matchup would have been so much more tantalizing were Watson starting, but alas, he is done for the year once again as that trade continues to age horribly for Cleveland. Still, since enlisting the services of Joe Flacco, the Browns look like bonafide Super Bowl contenders and nobody (well besides every woman in America) wants to see Watson get a ring less than the Team he so publicly embarrassed. Having found something stable with a nice guy who has everything in front of him, Houston would love to give the middle finger to the scumbag who took them for all they were worth.
Who wins:
While we love CJ Stroud and think the future is extremely bright for the surprise AFC South Champion, the Browns have been winning IN SPITE of Deshaun Watson who is a shell of his former self. This team has never looked better since bringing Flacco out of Daddy Day Care, going 4-1 and scoring 28.6 PPG with him as the starter while boasting the league’s top Defense. The Texans will absolutely make noise in the years to come, but it’s hard to imagine they’re ready to take a team this complete down just yet.
Tyreek Hill vs the Chiefs
In his two years away from the Chiefs, Tyreek Hill has proven both why you trade your super star receiver and subsequently why you don’t trade your superstar receiver. Chiefs’ kingdom basically reached Civil War level division on this subject as they debated whether Mahomes could carry this team without a clear cut top wide receiver.
Despite the initial results of that experiment being mixed, the defending Super Bowl Champions undoubtedly feel they made the right decision and will find receivers who can catch eventually. On the other side Hill, who was just named First Team All Pro, has had an MVP caliber season netting 1,814 all purpose yards and 13 receiving touchdowns. The first time he saw his former Kansas City flame, he nervously fumbled and basically threw up all over himself whilst representing the greatest Country on Earth on foreign soil.
He’ll no doubt be looking to redeem himself in their next encounter with the type of performance that can fast-track him to the second ring of his career and the first in a teal and orange uniform.
Who wins:
With -21° wind chill temperature expected, it’s hard to imagine a team from Florida seriously competing in this game. Couple that in with the loss of two of their premier pass rushers and a Kansas City team that can run the piss out of the ball, play mean defense, and oh I don’t know, has Patrick Fucking Mahomes, and it becomes very hard to envision the Dolphins winning this game. The most likely outcome is Tyreek confirming the Chiefs we’re right to move on from him until they lose in the AFC Championship because they can’t pass the fucking ball.
Mike McCarthy vs the Green Bay Packers
As hilarious as it is to poke fun at Mike McCarthy’s complete lack of situational awareness in tight games, he did what the Packers’ new flame has yet to show he can do and brought Green Bay their last Lombardi. And while it’s easy to give Aaron Rodgers all the credit for that, Matt LaFleur had the 4 Time MVP/sworn enemy of Jimmy Kimmel PLUS Davante Adams and back-to-back 1 Seeds and still has yet to even make the big dance. Still, there’s a reason LaFleur was brought in and it had a lot to do with Rodgers’ constant questioning of McCarthy and the franchise being middle of the…..Pack towards the end of Big Mike’s tenure.
The most damning aspect of this transition was the Packers’ immediate ascension to the top of the NFC with three consecutive 13 win seasons. So how has McCarthy responded in his second go round as HC? With three consecutive 12 win seasons! That’s right both these coaches have reasons to puff their chests out and Sunday’s Wild Card matchup will undoubtedly be a nationally televised dick measuring contest.
The key difference here is Green Bay’s new beau is playing with house money. Rodgers and Davante are gone, half the Packers’ roster still carries fake IDs, and McCarthy is under more pressure than ever to deliver the goods at home with the best Cowboys’ team he’s had and coaches like Belichick and (most likely) Jim Harbaugh back on the dating scene. Green Bay has also had Dallas’ number as of late ESPECIALLY in the playoffs (just ask Dez). If he lets Green Bay’s new man come into his house and give his ex a night she’ll never forget right in front of him and all his fans, he’s as good as gone.
Who wins:
While it would undoubtedly be hilarious to watch another early Dallas collapse in the postseason in a game they should absolutely win, this feels like too tall of an order. The Packers have played well and will be a lot of fun to watch in the years to come, but this years’ Cowboys play too well at home (16 straight wins in Jerry World) and are too well rounded with All-Pros in all three phases, while the Packers’ are woefully inexperienced on this type of stage. It would take a cataclysmic meltdown for this upset to occur and while we won’t totally rule that out, our money is on the home team winning a game that is probably closer than it should be.
Jared Goff vs The Rams
Of all the exciting revenge narratives of Wild Card Weekend, Goff’s Detroit Lions vs Matthew Stafford’s Rams IN DETROIT is the Super Bowl of axes to grind. It’s not every day that number one overall picks are swapped, let alone face each other on their respective new teams in a do or die game. Matthew Stafford was basically the Tom Brady of disappointing his fanbase during his tenure as a Lion, going 0-3 in the playoffs with Detroit. He’ll look to keep that streak alive and ensure another playoff loss for Detroit this Sunday. He finally popped his cherry with the Rams who did things with him his former flame never would. To make things juicier, the Rams left Jared Goff, a Quarterback who had taken them to a Super Bowl, to be with Stafford.
When Goff was dumped, everyone assumed him falling into Detroit’s arms was a meaningless rebound that would flame out in no time. But lo and behold, this dynamic just works with Goff doing things for this Lions franchise that Stafford never could such as winning the NFC North for the first time in three decades. Still, as much as Goff has satisfied Detroit, Stafford gave the Rams the night of their life bringing them the Super Bowl Trophy that Goff never could.
Ignore the sportsmanship diatribe in the press conferences leading up to this one. Both these guys have something to prove and both will be looking to put on a show in this awkward AF reunion. Stafford will be looking to display the caliber of play that made him the home team’s top pick in 2009 and further demonstrate what could have been with a better supporting cast. Goff will be looking to show McVay he was wrong to give up on him and that they still could have won it all together if they’d just stayed the course. Campbell will be looking to show Stafford how different things could have been under his leadership and that he never had to leave to be successful. In the end, both these squads have flourished despite the stir this move created. But only one is going to move onto the divisional round while the other takes a very personal loss and an agonizing blow to their ego.
Who wins:
As feel good as the Lions’ story has been this year, this one just feels like the jocks are going to come in and rain on Detroit’s parade all over again. Sam LaPorta, who’s been a revelation, fucked up his knee and the Rams finished the year as one of the hottest teams in Football. Couple that with LA’s postseason success (7-3 with two Super Bowl appearances and a Super Bowl Championship under McVay) and Detroit making their first foray in the playoffs behind Goff and Dan Campbell, and it seems more likely that the Rams bite off the Lions’ kneecaps while Stafford rips Detroit’s heart out one more time.

Nova Scotia byelection called for Preston riding
The Nova Scotia premier has called an Aug. 8 byelection for the Preston constituency to fill the vacant seat previously held by Angela Simmonds.
Premier Tim Houston made the byelection call Friday.
Simmonds, who was elected as a Liberal MLA in the 2021 general election, was the first Black woman to be named deputy Speaker in Nova Scotia.
On Jan. 25, she announced that she would resign from her seat effective Apr. 1.
Simmonds, a lawyer and the former executive director of a province-led initiative to help African Nova Scotians get clear title to their land, said at the time she would spend the next few months with her family and community while working out what comes next.
Prior to Simmonds’ election in 2021, the historically Black community of Preston had been represented by a white candidate since 1999.
Nova Scotia’s Progressive Conservatives, Liberals and NDP have each named their candidates for the August vote.
The NDP has named Colter Simmonds, a coach and the founder of We Will Win Youth Association, as the party’s candidate.
The governing Progressive Conservatives will be represented by Twila Grosse, who has a background in finance and community service.
The Liberals announced in May that long-time small business owner Carlo Simmons will represent the party in the byelection.
Upon her resignation, Angela Simmonds said she will continue to support initiatives tied to anti-racism, equity and diversity.
“For me, this decision is necessary to stretch out the legacy of changemakers, lifting up new voices while also preserving my own,” Simmonds said in a Jan. 25 party statement.
In October 2021, Simmonds was informed by Houston that a staffer in the Justice Department made racist comments toward her on social media. The staffer was fired and Houston did not share the employee’s name or what they had said.
Last year, Angela Simmonds ran for the leadership of the Opposition Liberals and, in July, was defeated by Zach Churchill.

Meet Jacqueline Cochran!
When contemplating starting her own business, Cochran learned to fly at the suggestion of her future husband Floyd Odlum, founder and president of the Atlas Corporation, to market the venture. In 1932, she soloed at Roosevelt Flying School on Long Island and received her license after only three weeks of lessons; she then immediately pursued advanced instruction at the Ryan School of Aeronautics and built up flight time. She earned her instrument rating and commercial and transport pilot licenses and entered the 1934 MacRobertson Air Race from London, England, to Melbourne, Australia, flying a Granville R-6H QED, only to be forced down by mechanical difficulty in Bucharest, Romania.
In 1935 she established Jacqueline Cochran Cosmetics, Wings of Beauty, in Chicago, Los Angeles, and eventually on New York's Fifth Avenue, successfully competing with Helena Rubenstein and Elizabeth Arden beauty houses. Cochran flew around the country delivering test products and building up distributors, and she formulated a moisturizer to combat dry skin resulting from high altitude flight. After a flight, Cochran always took time to repair her makeup and comb her hair as a personal preference, while also cognizant of the public view of women pilots as non-feminine.
Cochran was an ambitious record setter. She set two women's speed records in her Beech D-17W Staggerwing in 1937, followed by three major (men's and women's) flying records and, after three attempts, she won the prestigious 1938 Bendix Trophy Race flying Alexander de Seversky's P-35 pursuit plane.
As war in Europe approached, Cochran was one of several women who felt women should be utilized in wartime aviation. In 1941, Cochran selected a group of 27 highly qualified U.S. women pilots to ferry military aircraft in Great Britain for the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA), as most male military pilots were flying in combat. In 1942, Cochran, at the request of Army General Henry "Hap" Arnold, organized the Women's Flying Training Detachment (WFTD) to train civilian women pilots in anticipation of a similar domestic shortage of American military pilots during World War II. Based first at Houston and then Avenger Field in Sweetwater, Texas, the WFTD received primary flight training in military aircraft from military instructors. The WFTD soon merged with Nancy Love's Women's Auxiliary Ferry Squadron (WAFS, a group of experienced pilots) to form the civilian Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) with Cochran as director. From 1943 to 1944, 1,074 women flew over 60 million miles ferrying aircraft and personnel, towing targets, and other transport duties. The WASP flew every military aircraft including Boeing B-17 and B-29 bombers. The WASP were disbanded in 1944, and Cochran was at the center of complications that prevented the group from being absorbed into the USAAF's Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC). The WASP finally received retroactive military status in 1977.
Following the war, Cochran earned more speed records including multiple ones in her Lockheed Lodestar. In 1953, she borrowed a Canadair F-86 Sabre jet (because military aircraft were not available to civilian and especially female pilots) to break the sound barrier; she was coached by Major Charles "Chuck" Yeager, the first man to break the sound barrier.
For several years Cochran traded records with French pilot Jacqueline Auriol, a matter of pride for both nations. In 1961, she received permission to fly a company-owned Northrop T-38 Talon and promptly set straightaway courses, speed over various distance closed courses, and altitude records, including an absolute altitude record of 56,071.80 feet that bested Auriol's. In May 1964, now 58 years old and allowed to fly a USAF Lockheed F-104G Starfighter, she set three new speed records and flew Mach 2, twice the speed of sound.
By the time of her death, Cochran received the Distinguished Service Medal for her leadership of the WASP and three Distinguished Flying Cross awards for other records. She was also a Colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserve.

10 Signs That You're in a Healthy Relationship
Tumblr media
You and your partner enjoy exploring new restaurants, going on long bike rides, and traveling together, but there are other factors to consider when it comes to being happy and healthy in a relationship than sharing common interests. What really constitutes a healthy relationship? "A great partnership is a safe environment for both people to love, honor, and respect one another," says Jennifer Howell, a Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina-based leadership and relationship coach. You can express your desires, needs, and boundaries while also listening to the other person. According to Mary Jo Rapini, a licensed intimacy and sex psychotherapist in Houston, a healthy relationship is important to cultivate because the opposite — a toxic relationship — takes a toll on your quality of life by heightening depression and anxiety, affecting sleep, causing you to adopt unhealthy habits, and even affecting heart health. According to a study published in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin in August 2019, being in a high-quality romantic relationship is related with better well-being. According to the study, being single is considerably better for one's well-being than being in a less happy relationship. Furthermore, many couples in toxic relationships are unaware of it, especially if they grew up in a household where it was the norm, according to Rapini. As a result, knowing where yours stands is much more vital. Here are 10 signs that you and your partner are a good match: 1. You Are Unafraid to Speak Out
Tumblr media
10 Signs That You're in a Healthy Relationship When your partner does something you don't like, it's simple to notice - whether they don't call you for two days or don't help out around the home when you live together. But, it is not always simple to speak up and express your feelings to your significant other. "It takes a lot of strength, self-confidence, and courage to come from a vulnerable place," Howell says. You will feel confident enough in a good relationship to be candid with your mate. 2. You respect each other. You don't have to enjoy everything your partner does, but you must respect each other. You and your significant other must recognize that you are each unique individuals with distinct interests and desires. Even if you don't share all of your partner's interests, a healthy relationship respects and accepts your differences. 3. The Connection Is Built on Trust
Tumblr media
Trust is essential in all relationships, but with social media and cellphones, snooping has become all too easy. But you don't have to do that in a healthy relationship. This is due, in part, to your spouse demonstrating their trustworthiness. "They're dependable and accessible." "They'll be there when they say they'll be there," Rapini says. They also demonstrate their trust in you by allowing you the freedom and space you require without continuously checking in on you — including checking your phone, she claims. 4. You're both invested in your relationship. According to a 2020 assessment of dozens of relationship research, feeling dedicated to your mate is the best indicator of a healthy union. 2 If you believe your partner is in it for the long haul and your partner believes the same of you, your relationship is probably healthy. 5. You understand each other's love language
Tumblr media
10 Signs That You're in a Healthy Relationship For good reason, many couples swear by the book The 5 Love Languages: it teaches you how to identify your partner's "love language" – the method they prefer to give and receive love (through words of affirmation, quality time, gifts, acts of service, or physical touch). According to Howell, in a healthy relationship, you've taken the time to learn each other's "love language" so you may show your love in a way that works for both of you. 6. You’re kind to each other. Both sides in a healthy relationship treat one other with care and concern. Every couple bickers at times, but individuals in healthy relationships are kind to one another even when they disagree. 8. You are willing to disagree on certain issues. Every relationship has a quarrel. But, contrary to popular belief, you do not need to address every issue. In fact, it's perfectly fine to have a few things on which you and your partner will never agree. "It's perfectly fair to agree to disagree." "I think that's healthy fighting," Rapini says. "At least five issues are 'no talkers' in good partnerships." They're the areas on which you and your partner disagree, and that's fine." 9. You really  enjoy each other's company.
Tumblr media
It is important for couples to have separate hobbies and spend time apart, but healthy couples also love spending time together, whether they binge-watch a TV show together, work out together, or have regular date evenings. 10. You motivate each other to achieve your goals. "Many of us have a dream or vision for our lives, and especially as we get older, we want to keep those visions," Howell adds. It's alright, according to Howell, if your dreams don't coincide as long as you "respect and encourage each other to reach your goals." Read the full article

Anthony Kevin Dungy (born October 6, 1955) is a former football safety and coach who served as a head coach in the NFL for 13 seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Indianapolis Colts. His teams became perennial postseason contenders under his leadership, missing the playoffs only twice with Tampa Bay. He led the Colts to victory in Super Bowl XLI, making him the first African American head coach to win the Super Bowl. His career has included several notable firsts. Among them, he is the first NFL head coach to defeat all 32 NFL teams. He was the youngest assistant coach at age 25 and the youngest coordinator at age 28 in NFL history. He began his head coaching tenure with the Buccaneers. Through the implementation of the Tampa 2 defensive scheme, he brought new success to the Buccaneers, leading them to four playoff appearances in six seasons. He would be fired after the 2001 playoffs due to frequent postseason struggles but is credited with constructing the team that won Super Bowl XXXVII. He served as the Colts' head coach for seven seasons, qualifying for the playoffs in each. His greatest success occurred with the Colts' Super Bowl-winning season in 2006. He retired from coaching following the 2008 season. He has served as an analyst on Football Night in America. He is the national spokesman for the fatherhood program All Pro Dad. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2016. He is the most recent NFL player to intercept a pass and throw an interception in the same game. He was the emergency quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers in a 1977 game against the Houston Oilers. President George W. Bush appointed him a member of the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation. President Barack Obama invited him to join the Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. He declined the invitation to join the council because of scheduling conflicts, as he could make only two of four council meetings, but agreed to be an informal adviser on fatherhood issues. He had turned down offers from NFL Players' Association to become a liaison to the NFL. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/CjXzfxqr17M/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Sharing Vulnerability- Building a Winning Culture | Self-Improvement Coaching
Here’s another look at sharing vulnerability to build on the previous post. A winning culture starts inside of you. Then, in your business and relationships, you spread your beliefs about yourself, your world and most importantly how you care for others. Culture, in a business or in personal relationships, is defined by how you care for others.
Tumblr media
One of the key components in building a winning culture with others is to create an atmosphere where you can share vulnerability. Sharing vulnerability is not easy for most people. If you share vulnerability you may say to someone, “I don’t know.” Or, “I need your help.” Another way to share vulnerability is to ask for someone’s opinion or expertise. You are not asking for direct help in this case. You want their opinion to help you gain clarity on something where you are stuck or confused.
But when you share your vulnerability is this truly sharing vulnerability. There is a subtle yet important difference. The answer when it comes to sharing vulnerability is that both parties have to show vulnerability.
I have the privilege of doing business coaching in The Woodlands and business coaching in Houston. I also have clients out of town that I collaborate with on the phone.
