⋆˚ ✧. ┊┊ AUGUSTUS.BIDLOW;; SHARED HEADCANON WITH @arcencielreve & @kissofthemuses !!!
Tumblr media
I can't seem to find the old headcanon post? So, I'm going to re-write it! Or write it out for the first time??? Whichever the case may be. Nonetheless! As a group, we have collectively decided that Prim does not die, Hugo doesn't die- though it does make for good plot armour- nobody fecking dies that's touched because f canon! After the purists (people that hate the touched.) raid the orphanage/home for the touched, Augie offers to buy them an estate in the countryside where they can distance themselves from the purists and maybe set up a better defence protocol instead of being in the cramped space of London. With the open air and all the space they can use! Being that the other building was basically destroyed and they had nowhere to go, I'd say they stayed at the Bidlow estate for a while until Augie buys a separate building for the touched. He continues to run the Bidlow business- whatever that may be. they never specified. But they are very well-off people. And he now takes over Lavinia's (his late sister-- mighttt be at his own hand xD she deserved it!) jobs and social interactions as well as funding for the touched.

Midnight Binge: The Nevers (Mid-Season Final)
Beautifully crafted, witty, magical, and filled with secrets, The Nevers, an HBO show created by Joss Whedon (who stepped down as director/executive producer in November 2020), is an epic tale that follows a growing group of Victorian women and minorities (as well as those living on the fringes of London society) who find themselves in the possession of special powers. On today’s midnight binge, we’re taking a look at the world, people, politics, and the production of The Nevers.
Obviously, spoilers!
Tumblr media
THE TOUCHED
After an unprecedented event in London gives women and minorities remarkable abilities, the Touched, as they are called, or at other times, the afflicted. They resort to living at an orphanage because of their turns (or powers) called St. Romaulda’s Orphanage, which becomes a home and sanctuary for the Touched. This sanctuary is sponsored by Lavinia Bidlow, the wealthy benefactor who has ulterior motives behind keeping a close eye on the touched. The sanctuary is run by Amalia True, who not only can see the future but tries to keep her charges safe while harboring her own secrets that she keeps very tight to her chest.
Tumblr media
The Touched are typically women, or individuals, who live on the fringes of society. Their turns differ from one person to another. There is healing, premonition, molecular alterations and manipulation, and the ability to see and manipulate electricity. There is uncertainty surrounding how a turn is chosen for a person, i.e. why does one person see electricity over causing something to explode? Is it similar to the way Inhumans from the Marvel Universe (shows like S.H.E.I.L.D and Inhumans), in which the power is created because the world needs it, as in fixing a lack of balance? Or is it genetics or even personality-based? Or somehow wholly random? Because we sort of know-how, the turns were giving out and even a bit of why.
The manifestation of the Touched flips the hierarchy or more specifically the patriarchy, on its head, and unfortunately because of the kinds of people that ended up getting turns, women, immigrants, and other types of people who live at the fringes of society basically those who are seen as less than or inconsequential in society. This splits people into factions and even radicals, including Lavinia, and the ins and outs of London politics, which is being spearheaded by an ex-military and high government official, Lord Gilbert Massen.
THE GALANTHI
The Galanthi are an alien race who flew over London causing the Touched. Their mission was to give humans the means to save a ravaged Earth. Like how London is split into fractions, so were the military organizations that were against or for the Galanthi doing what they were doing, the Planetary Defense Coalition (PDC) who were for, and FreeLife Army who were against. The FreeLife Army attacked the Galanthi and killed 19 after bombing their project stations. The last station was run by a woman named Zephyr who committed suicide which allowed her soul to be placed on the last ship. Amalia, then Mary, was Touched just as she committed suicide which allowed Zephyr to enter her body and they changed their name to Amalia True.
PRODUCTION
HBO’s The Nevers was announced for a series in July 2018. Whedon became the creator, director, executive producer, and showrunner of the series. A bidding war started between a number of stations, including Netflix, before being picked up by HBO. Executive producers and writers included Bernie Caulfield, Jane Espenson, and Doug Petrie and later Laurie Penny, Melissa Iqbal, Madhuri Shekar, Kevin Lau, Daniel S. Kaminsky, and Hennah Sekandary. In November, Whedon stepped down as showrunner, director, and executive director, stating “unprecedented challenges” and exhaustion as his reason for stepping back. However, he was “deeply proud of the work” on The Nevers. Whedon was replaced by Philippa Goslett as the new series showrunner. Gemma Jackson would serve as a production designer and Christine Blundell as a make-up designer.
CAST
Laura Donnelly (Claudia Black), Ann Skelly, Olivia Williams, James Norton, Tom Riley, Pip Torrens, Denis O’Hare, Amy Manson, Rochelle Neil, Zackary Momoh, Eleanor Tomlinson, Nick Frost, Elizabeth Berrington, Viola Prettejohn, Anna Devlin, Kiran Sonia Sawar, Ben Chaplin, Ella Smith, and Vinnie Heaven were billed as the main cast as The Nevers.
FILMING
Filming, production, and principal photography started in 2019. Locations varied in London, such as Trinity Church Square, Southwark Borough, New Wimbledon Theatre, Charterhouse Square, The Mall, Lincoln’s Inn Fields, Historic Dockyard Chatham, and more. In January 2020, filming took place at the Joyce Grove country house estate; January also saw production and filming temporarily cease because of COVID-19. Scenes had to be reworked to accommodate new rules and regulations because of COVID restrictions, such as the Maladies execution scene, which utilized CGI effects and green screen methods to make it seem like more people within the given space. It also saw the set be rebuilt entirely on a soundstage because they couldn’t film on location. Production and filming were picked up again around September and wrapped up for its mid-season final.
Originally, season one was meant to have ten episodes. However, that was scarped for a two-part season, allowing for a mid-season final at episode six. As of June 11, 2021, The Nevers has not been picked up for a second season, nor has it been canceled.
CONCLUSIONS
I’ve enjoyed The Nevers so far and it was just getting good with its mid-season final. However, the first few episodes were a bit bumpy, and the foundation is built, but it’s taking some time to stitch everything together cohesively. I have hopes for the later episodes and do wish for a second season. I rate the show thus far a 3.9/5, I always give a bit of leniency when it comes to the first season of any show because nothing is really fleshed out. There are very few first seasons of the series I thoroughly enjoyed with little complaint, but I have high ambitions for this show and desire to see it do better.
What are your thoughts on The Nevers? Do you like it, or do you have some issues with the show?
UPDATE
As of December 16th, 2022, The Nevers has been canceled and subsequently pulled from its streaming platform (HBO Max).

Holy shit the Nevers is kind of good , which is something I never expected to say about a Joss whedon show in 2022.
Only 6 episodes ( we need the second half of season one to drop soon) fantasy victorian shenanigans, plenty of actually good female characters , penance and Amalia are a perfect couple. The badass and the sunshine one.
And of course the hot priest from Grantchester plays the perfect decadent aristocrat , bisexual and full of shit. The perfect stuff.
Bonus points for Lavinia bidlow. It's a fucking miracle to see a disabled character which is actually interesting and not an stereotype.
Bonus points for Lord Massen basically embodying the fucking British empire.

The voice that said "do you think you're the only one who hitched the ride?" sounded a lot like Lavinia - does that imply that she's a time traveller too, maybe someone from FreeLife team? And what was that bit with Myrtle being revealed in an extremely dramatic way and giving off intense Time Lord vibes? Does that mean that she's somehow more than it seems, or that she has a stronger connection to the Galanthi and it choses to present itself in her form? Sure, it was talking to her in the voices of a number of people she've met, but unlike other people in flashbacks, Myrtle wore something she'd never wear in real life, making her stand out. BTW good job on making Stripe instantly recognizable as Amalia, despite having a different look and accent. I think it helped that her voice sounded very similar.

☆|| HAPPY PRIDE, YO;; Augie
Tumblr media
// Augie is Bi. I don’t make the rules. He has a very close relationship with Hugo and also Penny. Both who I ship him with. The fandom also ships both quite heavily. Either would be a very good choice imo.
Tumblr media
However I feel like because of his social stature and he’s not as open as Hugo when it comes to his sexuality (Hugo has canonically slept with both men and women.) But with Augie, he’s rather closeted about the matter. His relationships with both Hugo and Penny threaten to tarnish the Bidlow name as Lavinia puts it. But he does struggle between upholding his family name and the relationships he makes.

War for the future
I think we all figured out the truth about Amalia. Or at least something pretty close. I wasn’t sure if Amalia’s mind was fully replaced after her suicide or if her and Zephyr memories were jumbled and that’s why she seemed to not know some important information about why and how she was there. Now we know that it was just Zephyr’s memories - at least until know since Galanthi shown her Amalia’s life - but she didn’t know because she just didn’t know that much about the alien to begin with. And she also didn’t even know she was coming to the past with it. She was just a grunt soldier. A very good one. But then how could she not be when she was Claudia Black?
We learn that the future people destroyed thought a nuclear war over whether to take the alien help or not. That both sides were fanatical but the  one that fought against the aliens for human purity were especially cruel. They justification of it was that the PDC were traitors to human race. The PDC had Touched who believed Galanthi want to help humans but they developed their own religion around it including the whole “names are sacred and you tell them to no one” thing.
We also know even PDC know very little about Galanthi and what are their plans and how their gifts work. Stripe is convinced every Spore knows how to communicate with the aliens but we see it’s untrue - both because it’s what Stitch tells her but also because all the Touched have Spores but only Myrtle seems to be one that can understand the alien. But it also seems like the ones who can communicate really have more understanding of the powers since future Myrtle seems to know Zephyr is seeing her from the past and tells her to forget it.
We also know that only few people react to the Spores by getting powers. This explains why not all people who were outside that day got them. Like why Lord Massen didn’t get any while his daughter did (I hope we’ll learn soon what is it and why he keeps her in the cellar). Or why Augie is Touched but Lavinia isn’t - although I keep wondering in that case as it seems like there is something off about Lavinia and I wonder if she is Touched after all and that’s why she wants a cure for it or if she’s one of those who came from the future and the was FLA and that’s why she wants to kill Galanthi and thinks it wants to destroy them all. She keeps saying it wants war and will corrupt their minds and all this seems very FLA.
Of course it depends on how choosy Galanthi was with taking people along. Was it everyone in the base who was still alive? Or anyone it could reach? Could it chose who to take? But then why would it include FLA at all? Could it tell who is who? Does it know where they all are in their new lives? I mean it knew not just Zephyr but the name she took in this new time so we should assume it has some connection to all of them still.
I assume it was limited to the base and only to those still alive. However we don’t know who else was fully dead when Galanthi left. Any of the other shot - including that FreeLife Army major and the guy who helped him - could’ve been still alive (they were shot but we didn’t see them die) and hitched a ride.
There were also the other two PDC (shot guy and the other one) so maybe Zephyr isn’t alone in the past. Maybe there aren’t just enemies who were brought along but also back up. And since bodies were doled out based on availability who knows what they look like. Maybe that woman’s voice belongs to one of those guys.
I wonder if giving Zephyr Amalia’s memories was to help her understand her powers. I mean Zephyr had her first flashback - to when she got her scar - when Galanthi first tried to use its tentacles to take the Team but that might’ve been just it trying to communicate. It  looks like she only got the flash forwards after being placed in  Amalia’s body and maybe that’s why she became receptive to Spore. She didn’t have those powers before. She thought they were proof of her being in sim at first after all.
I wonder how much of Zephyr involvement with Cousens is less love and more convenience. He was just at the right place and right time - he just happened to  be the first Touched she knew about in her new world - and she knew they  end up having sex from her vision. And she needed someone in that moment to not feel so alone in this new time so he is one who knows the truth about who she is and how she’s there so she can be herself with him.
So how much of it is just that she  has very different views on sex and commitments than 19th century  British and how much is real attachment? She still called Penance her heart and it’s Penance she told her real name. We know from some Zephyr’s memory flashes she seems to be bisexual.
Of course it seems like in general friendships are more important to Zephyr than romantic relationships (she hadn’t told her neither of those she married her name for 3 years they were married). And maybe she just learning to trust people more. Those two years in less hostile times clearly changed her. It’s clear when you compare the Zephyr who sacrificed Sarah to Hague even though she understood how creepy he is because she was there and already crazy (was being committed before becoming Touched) with one we know now. She always had it in her (we see in her flashback with Knitter) but the war taught her it was unwise to get attached. Penance and others brought her out of that. And now she’s ready to tell all the Touched where she came from and how.
Still, even though I’m not a shipper and I don’t really care who ends up with who this “my heart” and name reveal moments made me wonder if the show really has a plan for Penance and Amalia/Zephyr to get together eventually and it’s not just the shippers wishful thinking. And both Augie (he seems like a character Wheadon would kill off in a pairing) and Horatio (keeps talking about this being a sin a lot and has a wife) are just misdirection.  The first infatuations just to burn out.

Ok so....here I go.
I'm willing to get actual money that on The Nevers, Lavina Bidlow or whatever her name is helping the experiments on the Touched not because she hates them, but because she wants to have what they have and somehow be able to walk again because no sir, that isn't problematic at all. And at the end of the season, upon realizing that her brother is Touched, she'll go on some childish tirade about how she was the one running the family, how "she should have been gifted, not you!" Because she is more deserving, and also she'll tell Amalia and Penance "how she did protect them" and "They really do mean something to her" but they'll just shake their heads like "You deluded entitled bitch". And Hugo will end up helping the good guys because "it's good for business" even when he is hardly better then Lavinia. And just as it seems like the good guys have won, a new out of context problem will fall out of the fucking sky.
And in all honestly, this is a Joss Whedon show. We all know what to expect at this point.

Also the other person from the future is absolutely in Lavinia, right? Cuz I was thinking in the last episode how odd it was that she seemed so sure the Galanthi was there to destroy them when it...literally has just been sitting there. So if she’s from the future, then she would actually have reason to believe it, as well as reason to be doing everything that she’s doing to stop it—a reason that isn’t just random fear and prejudice.

Ok this episode was amazing but i feel like a clown cause i got EVERYTHING so wrong XD.
I wanst expecting Lucy to be working with the enemy. I can understand her motive tho. She want to be normal again because her power killed her child. That was so fucking bad. I was heartbroken.
And i dont understand... were they saying that Amalia is involved with the thing that created the touched? Did i understand well? She was left behind... why??
I loved the thing about gathering people talking different languages to understand what the girl was saying and translate Mary's song. That's why she looked troubled when she was singing.
I loves Penance and the bird guy scene.... they were so cuteeeeee... and she looked incredibly amazing.
