""Guilty" Is Decision Given by Petit Jury," Kingston Whig-Standard. June 17, 1933. Page 3. ---- Convict Evans, Conducting His Own Defence, Maintained There Was No Proof He Took Part in Riot. "We, the jury, find Convict John Evans guilty of rioting," was the verdict returned by the petit jury in the trial of Convict Evans at noon today. Judge H. A. Lavell deferred sentence. Evans asked if he could appeal the de- cision and was advised by the Bench that such procedure was possible if sufficient grounds were established. His Honor recommended that the accused secure legal advice, Court was adjourned until Monday morning. When County Court resumed Friday afternoon, Guard Earl was called to the stand for cross-examination by Convict Evans, who is conducting his own defence.
Earl declared he saw Evans in the shop dome and also that he had a bar in his hands. He admitted that he did not see Evans doing any damages, or breaking a lock. Earl, in his evidence, said Evans went into the carpenter shop and gave the order for the men to leave the shop. He said the men left the shop five or ten minutes after the order was given by Evans.
Guard Boucher Officer Boucher was the second witness of the afternoon and questioned by Crown Attorney, T. J. Rigney said he saw Evans on the after- noon of October 17 when he prevent ed Inspector Smith from opening the door of the south dome and leaving. He did not see Evans with anything in his hands. Details of the events which occurred on the afternoon of October 17 were given by Officer Boucher, who declared he saw a hammer thrown at Guard Wendholt that would have killed him had he not ducked.
Boucher was cross examined by Convict Evans, who questioned him as. to a definition of a riot, which Boucher gave.
"Was it an unlawful assembly to break a penitentiary rule?" asked Evans.
Boucher said he was threatened by two convicts when he tried to stop them from going out.
Evans - "Was the door locked?"
Boucher - "Yes."
Evans - "Then why try to step in front of these men when the door was locked?"
Boucher - "To try to bring my men to order.
Evans questioned Boucher as to the breaking of the machines in the mall bag department. Boucher swore that the convicts broke the machines end Evans pressed Boucher as to how he knew that. The witness replied that it must have been the convicts because the guards were in the front of the building, Evans suggested that officers might have broken them as well. Boucher said when he heard the machines being broken the officers were away from them. Evans suggested it might have been a piece of sheet iron the men were hammering but Boucher maintained the sound was of machines being broken.
Evans pressed Boucher as to whether he (Evans) stopped Inspector Smith from going out the dome door. Considerable questioning by Evans regarding the forcing of the guards him. to the front line in the mall bag department took place and Evans finally secured an assertion from Boucher that Evans did not order him to the front line.
Guard Robinson Answering Mr. Rigney witness described the scene in the mail bag room and declared some of the guards were struck while there. Robinson said he was hit on the head by a box filled with sawdust. The guards were forced to the front of the line in the mall bag room.
Questioned in cross examination by Evans, Guard Robinson said that Evans put his back to the door in the dome and prevented Inspector Smith from leaving.
Guard Kenny Officer James Kenny reviewed many of the events of the afternoon of the riot at the Penitentiary and declared Evans stopped Inspector Smith from leaving the dome. Kenny said he was hit from behind by a wooden box used as a spittoon. The force of the blow knocked him down, he said.
Cross-questioned by Evans, Kenny said he had no black jack with him but saw him later Kenny said he did not see Evans doing any damage and when Inspector Smith asked for order before he spoke one could have heard a pindrop.
Kenny said he could not swear that Evans prevented Smith from leaving the dome. It might have been somebody else. Kenny admitted that he did not see Evans do any damage.
Deputy Warden Deputy Warden Sullivan told Crown Attorney Rigney that eleven machines were broken by convicts, this number being about one-third of the total number in the mail bag department.
In answer to Evans witness said he knew Kenny was hit. He saw the spittoon going in Kenny's direction and then saw the sawdust on him and his head was cut.
There were no officers where the machines were being broken, the Deputy said. This concluded the case for the Crown. The Crown withdrew the charge that Evans did damage as Mr. Rigney felt that it could not be estabished by the evidence given in the trial. The charge that he took part in the riot stood and evidence for the defence in the case was commenced, the first witness called being Convict Walker, who was in the box when court was adjourned until 9:30 o'clock this morning.
Morning Session Convict John Evans, colored, defending his own case, staged a surprise attack this morning when he asked that the jury be dismissed from the Court while he reviewed evidence already given with Judge Lavell. Evan's point was that no evidence had been given connecting him actively with the riot but the Judge, disallowed the claim.
Convict Cross Convict Charles Cross, colored, testified that there was no shouting of yelling in the dome at the time of the riot. In his estimation the men were merely talking in a normal voice. Cross stated that he had walked into the dome in company with Evans, the accused, he said he saw the Warden talking to Evans but could not tell what he was saying because of other men talking. Wanted Charge Withdrawm At the request of Convict Evans the jury retired from the Court while he argued certain points which had been brought out by the Crown's evidence. Evans pointed out that several of the witnesses had admitted they had not seen him during the the riot and he asked why these men had been called upon to testify. He said that there was no testimony to show that he was present when damage was done to prison property.
Evans pleaded eloquently that the case be not allowed to proceed any further for lack of evidence. He said that the Crown had no case against him.
Judge Lavell patiently waited until Evans concluded and then gently but firmly pointed out that sufficient evidence had been given to warrant proceeding with the trial.
Addressed Jury Evans did not go into the witness stand himself but allowed his case to close at this point. Judge Lavell granted him permission to retire in company with another convict for in order to prepare his address to the jury.
In his address Evans reiterated the arguments he had given to the Judge previously. Evans averred that no evidence had been presented by the Crown to associate him in any way with property damage nor that he was in a "riotous mood." He admitted that he had left the tailor shop where he was working but had merely taken advantage of the opportunity occasioned by the disturbance to visit his friend, Convict Charles Cross, in another shop. Evans concluded by expressing his gratitude to the jury for giving him a fair trial.
T. J. Rigney, K.C., the Crown-Attorney, in his summation of the evidence declared that it was virtually impossible for any convict to prove that he had not taken part in the riot in the face of evidence that had been presented in this and previous trials. Mr. Rigney emphasized the point that, under the law, a man is guilty of participating in a riot whether or not he took an active part in it as long as he was associated with the ritoers.

i think you've answered this before so apologies for repeating, but i was wondering if you could recommend some good woso podcasts? preferably european leagues, also is the offside rule still going?
Apologies for the delay!
These are all podcasts I listen to and recommend, I'm sure there are plenty I've missed though so feel free to send in recommendations!
Weekly discussion/analysis of the FAWSL/UWCL/Lionesses:
Two Girls Talk Balls - "An Alternative Take on Women's Football - Charlotte and Tamsin bring a refreshing voice with debate, banter and highlights from women's football." Mainly focus on the FAWSL and the Lionesses. Absolutely hilarious most of the time and definitely tell it how it is - their recent sections on Gareth Taylor are particularly funny!
The Offside Rule WSL Podcast is now under the Athletic so has been renamed The Athletic Women's Football Podcast but is still hosted by the same people and is still available for free on Spotify etc - "Join Kait Borsay, Lynsey Hooper, and a host of guests are here to take you through the WSL and beyond". One of my favourites, entertaining, informative and often have players/former players/managers on to discuss games.
Box to Box WSL - "Chats about everything FA WSL, Women’s Champions League and women’s football filled with analysis, debate and banter. Featuring Alexandra Ibaceta, Jessy Parker Humphrys, Abdullah Abdullah and guests." I've only recently started listening to this podcast but I've really enjoyed it so far. Some in depth discussion/analysis and tend to have quite varied viewpoints as they're not all English and also bring on guests from other countries as well for the UWCL episodes.
Women's Football Weekly - Talksport radio show on Monday nights which is then available as a podcast. Usually hosted by Faye Carruthers but she's on maternity leave so currently hosted by Shebahn Aherne. Tend to have guests on from around the WSL - players/journos/managers.
Podcasts more focused on interviewing/chatting to individual players (most are less regular than those above):
What The Football? - "In depth and candid conversations with professional women's footballers from the Championship and WSL leagues. Discussing their careers, clubs highlights and lowlights." Hosted by Shebahn Aherne (Ruesha Littlejohn's sister), a lot of the guests know her so are relaxed and possibly more open than they would be with other interviewers. Some of the guests so far have been Katie McCabe, Lisa Evans & Vivianne Miedema, Emma Mitchell, Fara Williams, Kim Little, Alisha Lehmann, and Jen Beattie.
Girls With Balls - "This is a podcast about brave women. Women who dare to follow their dreams, both on the field and off. This is a forum for sharing stories, comparing battle scars, and celebrating achievements. This is your chance to get to know the inspirational figures who are out there changing the game. So if you don’t believe in girl power, or think that running like a girl is a bad thing, this podcast is not for you." Hosted by Ali Riley (New Zealand Captain & Orlando Pride) - again it tends to be players who she knows personally so they're more relaxed and open. She hasn't released a new episode for a while but guests so far have included Caroline Seger, Fran Kirby, Sam Mewis, Magdalena Eriksson & Pernille Harder, Stephanie Labbe, and Anja Mittag.
The Players. - "Bex Smith flips the script on women's football, speaking to some of the biggest names in the game. Brought to you by BBC Sport and Copa90." Former New Zealand Captain and veteran of the WPS/Frauen-Bundesliga/Damallsvenskan Bex Smith hosts two guests each episode for a wide ranging discussion on women's football. Episodes so far have included: Vivianne Miedema & Kelly Smith, Emma Hayes & Pia Sundhage, Cedella Marley & Khadija "Bunny" Shaw, Leah Williamson & Jen Beattie, and Sam Mewis & Rose Lavelle.
Behind the Goals - "Join Leanne Crichton & Rachel Corsie in their new show. The duo discuss all aspects of life, they give an incredibly honest and insightful look into their own personal sporting journeys. Joining them, are a long list of incredible guests who share their own stories, and lots lots more." Mainly Scottish guests so far - players past and present including Lisa Evans, Claire Emslie, Erin Cuthbert, Caroline Weir, Jen Beattie, and Julie Fleeting.

so you’re trying to understand sophia and i’s jatp universe
@localspacelesbian and I never intended for this to get so out of hand, but then it did, so here we are. We’ve got a few wips going, so I figured it was about time to get around to one of these.
it’s okay if you’re lost, because so are we! here’s a little guide to help you out (:
CHARACTERS:
The Lacrosse Team:
Spencer Montgomery-Wright: Our pride and joy. He’s on the lacrosse team, and can be seen being bewildered with Nick when the guys show up during ‘Bright’. Some have referred to him as the guy who is called ‘Letterman Jacket Guy’ on IMDb - these people are wrong. Letterman Jacket Guy is a white blonde guy. Spencer is black. He’s in the design program at their school and designs costumes for all the ballets.
He and Nick have been best friends since they were little, and have exchanged stuffed animals (Nick gave Spencer a stuffed penguin named Texas, and Spencer returned the favor with a stuffed elephant named Oklahoma). They’re total astronomy dorks (Spencer calls Nick ‘Tor’ after Copernicus, and Nick calls Spencer ‘Cass’ after Cassini). They’re also in love, but they’re still working through that.
Connor Nesbitt: The aforementioned ‘Letterman Jacket Guy’. He’s the captain of the lacrosse team, the very definition of a himbo. He’s in the cinematic arts program, but, like, really likes history.
Nick Danforth-Evans: Pretty self-explanatory, but the Danforth-Evans theory is canon in the SACU (Sophia and Adalie Cinematic Universe).
Chris McMillan: Chris is a sweetheart. He’s in the theater program but wants to be a farmer and raise sheep when he grows up. He just really likes farm animals, okay?
Barry O’Hara: A good dude! He’s in the dance program, and his Special Interest is linguistics and communication.
Rasheed Bakir: Rasheed!! He’s a bit of a running joke in our work, as he constantly hurts his legs and feet. He’s been known to ride in Connor’s car with a broken ankle hanging out the window. It’s fine. He’s in the theater program, hates Shakespeare more than anything, and is dating Ari Price.
Ari Price: Just a lil visual arts program kid. Constantly so worried about Rasheed. The Ultimate mom friend; his backpack is the equivalent of Alex’s fanny pack, and he makes a very good soup when one of the guys is sick.
Leo Montgomery: He’s Spencer’s cousin! Very buff and a little bit scary but is a whole teddy bear. He’s in the music program, and is so tired of watching Nick and Spencer pine. He’s a science nerd, except for biology. Fuck biology. All his homies hate biology.
Percy Mayer: We love Percy so much. He’s a Ballet Boy, and he’s fake dating a girl in ballet named Constance Hansen. He’s probably aro, but is still a little confused about that.
Oren Summers: Oren is a freshman in the visual arts program. Kind of just one of those nice guys you meet in school who are just cool to be around.
Grayson Radcliffe: Grayson plays the french horn in the music program, and is in our token heterosexual relationship with Jennifer Brickaday.
Dirty Candi
Kayla Lavelle: Y’all know Kayla. We named her ‘Lavelle’ because we went with a color based system and, yk, lavender.
Jennifer Brickaday: Yellow Candi! Dating Grayson, and we just don’t deserve her. Brickaday is a reference to the yellow brick road.
Andrea Turkis: Miss Turquoise Candi! Probably our favorite candi - she’s a lesbian and just gives the best hugs. (Turkis means turquoise in several languages.)
Velma Williams: Orange Candi! Straight up the coolest person alive. She’s aro, and helps Percy sort out his sexuality. Just really likes dinosaurs, you know? (Williams is for William of Orange)
Mary Brooks: Not a member of Dirty Candi, but their manager. Totally not in love with Julie what are you talking about that’s bananas (Mary - marron (brown) and Brooks is just a slightly less on-the-nose version of Brown).
Those Done Dirty:
Flynn Chadwick: Chat means cat in french, but we wanted Chadwick because it sounded neat.
Willie Greenwood: He just gives us green vibes I don’t know what to tell you
The Families:
The Danforth-Evans Family: Nick, Ryan, and Chad are a given. Nick also has a little sister named Phoebe Danforth-Evans. Phoebe is a gymnast and general rascal.
The Montgomery-Wright Family: Buckle up, y’all. Spencer has seven pets. - Laura Montgomery: Mom #1. Very chill, but very protective. - Francesca ‘Franny’ Wright: Mom #2. Just the sweetest, but is willing to cause harm to a bitch if necessary. - Dog: Herbert Fitzhoover (the light of all of our lives) - Cats: Tongs, Spoon, and Spatula. They’re just like old gay men. No further comment. - Bird: Chicken the parakeet. Spencer found him at the airport and just... brought him home. - Roomba: BoBo. Very Good Boy. - Kinda Penguin: Texas (a lesbian icon, married to Oklahoma)
The Chadwick Family:  - Dad: Nico Chadwick. Just, like, a really good dad. Living the life. - Older Brother: Andrew Chadwick. Absolute nerd, away at university, drinks his respecting women juice every day. - Younger Sisters: Rachel & Eliza Chadwick. Twins - they love tormenting Flynn. - Cat: Snoopy. The love of my life.
The Wilson Family:  - Cat: Peanut!! love him
The Mercer Family: - Alex’s Younger Sister: Annabelle ‘Annie’ Mercer. Deaf, has a bright pink hearing aid. Wants to be just like her big brother (is already halfway there, being that she is wildly queer).
RUNNING AND INSIDE JOKES:
Octoslashers III: Octoslashers shows up as some form of media in every fic we write. Every single one.
Twister: Alex is a GOD at Twister, and there’s no debating this.
Rasheed’s Leg: Rasheed breaks his leg, foot, or ankle somehow in every fic. He’s trying.
The Caleb Chew-Out: Let’s just say I’m making it my mission to write a scene into every fic of ours where a character yells at Caleb, and everyone is going to get their turn.
Oklahomas: Oklahoma and Texas are soulmates in every universe.
questions? let me know! i’ll add the answers (:

I know this time of year makes it rough for people money-wise, but an old coworker of mine is going through a heartbreaking tragedy right now. If anyone can spare a few dollars I know he and his family would greatly appreciate it.

"Simultaneous Courts to Be Held Here Next Week," Kingston Whig-Standard. June 8, 1933. Page 3. --- Understood That Majority of Convicts Will Conduct Their Own Defence - All Criminal Cases on Docket --- Two courts will sit simultaneously at the June Sessions of the Peace and County Court, opening at the Court House on Tuesday, June 13. Judge H. A. Lavell, Kingston, and Judge) Evan MacLean, Picton, will be on the bench the first week of the trials, while Judge Ernest Madden, Napanee, and Judge George Deroche, Belleville, will preside the second week, if court lasts that long. Only criminal criminal cases appear on the docket of the court. Twenty-five inmates of the Kingston Penitentiary charged with participating in the riot at the penitentiary on October 17, 1932; Arthur Lister, former manage of the Kingston branch of the Bank of Nova Scotia, charged with the theft; and Harold Pappa, Oso Township, charged with arson, will be the cases put to the Grand Jury. It is understood that Frank Regan of Toronto will defend three or four of the convicts hailing from Toronto while W. M. Nickle and W. F. Nickle will conduct the defence for Willard Millich, who, it is alleged. led the rioters in the kitchen. It is also learned that about twenty of the convicts will conduct their own defence. Many of the inmates who gave evidence in the Kirkland trial face charges of taking part in the riot. "Tim" Buck, the fiery Communist, who, it is alleged, was one of the ringleaders of the riot, will not be defended by counsel, it is understood. The prosecution at the prison trials will be conducted by T. J. Rigney and Col. Keiller MacKay, who represented the Crown when the 29 convicts were committed for trial early this spring.
