Mercury is the closest planet to our Sun, ranging from 46 million km (28.58 million mi) at perihelion to 69.82 million km (43.38 million mi) at aphelion. Because of its proximity, Mercury is strongly influenced by the steam of plasma constantly flowing from the Sun to the edge of the Solar System (aka. solar wind). Beginning with the Mariner 10 mission in 1974, robotic explorers have been sent to Mercury to measure how solar wind interacts with Mercury’s magnetic field to produce whistler-mode chorus waves – natural radio emissions that play a key role in electron acceleration in planetary magnetospheres. In addition to being the cause of geomagnetic storms and auroras in planetary atmospheres, these waves also lead to electromagnetic vibrations at the same frequencies as sound, producing chirps and whistles. In a recent study, an international research team consulted data from the BepiColombo International Mercury Exploration Project, which gathered data on Mercury’s magnetosphere during its first and second flyby. Their results are the first direct probing of chorus waves in Mercury’s dawn sector, which showed evidence of possible background variations in magnetic field. The team was led by Mitsunori Ozaki, an associate professor at the Graduate School of Natural Science and Technology at Kanazawa University. He was joined by astrophysicists from the Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere (RISH) at Kyoto University, the MagneDesign Corporation, the Laboratoire de Physique des Plasmas (LPP) at the Sorbonne’s École Polytechnique, and the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). The team’s paper, “Whistler-mode waves in Mercury’s magnetosphere observed by BepiColombo/Mio,” was recently published in Nature Astronomy. Artist’s impression of the European Space Agency’s BepiColombo mission in operation around Mercury. Credit: Astrium When Mariner 10 reached Mercury in 1974, scientists learned for the first time that, similar to Earth, Mercury had a planetary magnetic field and (hence) a magnetosphere. Between 2008 and 2015, NASA’s MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) spacecraft provided a detailed picture of Mercury’s magnetic field and magnetosphere. However, neither mission could observe chorus waves in the planet’s magnetosphere due to the lack of proper instruments and the harsh nature of Mercury’s electromagnetic environment. Since electromagnetic waves can efficiently accelerate plasma particles, scientists have been hoping to get a closer look at Mercury to measure the effect these waves have on its magnetospheric dynamics. This research is currently being conducted by the Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (MIO), a probe accompanying the joint ESA/JAXA BepiColombo mission. The MIO spacecraft was launched on October 20th, 2018, and is currently on its way to Mercury with an orbital insertion scheduled for December 2025 after several flybys with Earth, Venus, and Mercury (for gravity-assist maneuvers). MIO has conducted two flybys of Mercury so far, the first on October 1st, 2021, and again on June 23rd, 2022, that brought it to within 200 km (124 mi) of the surface. Unlike previous missions, the MIO spacecraft – operated by JAXA – is equipped with a full suite of plasma wave instruments designed specifically for investigating the electromagnetic environment around Mercury. In addition, the MIO spacecraft was designed to lower its electromagnetic noise level as much as possible. The alternating current magnetic field sensors developed by JAXA and the LPP were designed to operate in the extreme environment of Mercury. These allowed the spacecraft to make the first electromagnetic wave observations around Mercury without being contaminated by the noise from the spacecraft itself. These revealed the local generation of chorus waves, which confirmed predictions regarding their frequency range, intensity, etc., made since the 2000s when the MIO spacecraft’s plasma wave instrument (PWI) was designed. During the two flybys, the spacecraft found a ”spatial locality” of the chorus waves restricted to an extremely limited region in the dawn sector of the Mercury’s magnetosphere, implying the existence of a physical mechanism confined to this region. Plot showing the magnitude of the magnetic field of Mercury from data obtained during the first flyby of the MESSENGER probe in 2008. Credit: NASA/JHUAPL To investigate the cause of these waves, the team used the nonlinear growth theory of chorus waves established by Prof. Omura of Kyoto University (a co-author on the paper). This allowed them to evaluate the effect of the curvature of Mercury’s magnetic field, which revealed that it is strongly distorted by solar wind. This was apparent in how the magnetic field lines in the night sector are stretched by the solar wind pressure while being less affected in the dawn sector – resulting in a smaller curvature. This means that energy is efficiently transferred from electrons to electromagnetic waves in the dawn sector, leading to conditions that favor chorus waves. These results will significantly impact planetary scientists’ understanding of Mercury’s environment. These results demonstrate the importance of planetary magnetic field lines (which are strongly affected by solar wind) on the locality of chorus wave generation. They also demonstrate how chorus waves could efficiently accelerate electrons in Mercury’s magnetosphere and how their precipitation could lead to X-ray aurorae. Their findings also predict the kinds of observations the MIO spacecraft will carry out once it establishes orbit around Mercury. As the team indicated in a Kanazawa University press release: “Based on flyby observations, we have found that magnetic field distortion is responsible for the local (i.e. dawn sector) generation of the chorus waves. The comprehensive exploration of the electromagnetic environment by the Mio spacecraft in Mercury’s orbit will contribute not only to understanding the plasma environment of the entire Mercury’s magnetosphere but also to a deep understanding of the magnetospheric dynamics in general. The magnetosphere acts as a barrier preventing life-threatening cosmic radiations on the planets of the solar system. Comparison of data from Mercury and Earth will strengthen our understanding of this important natural shielding of our home planet.” Further Reading: Kanazawa University, Nature Astronomy The post The Solar Wind Whistles as it Passes Mercury appeared first on Universe Today.

BEPICOLOMBO: TWO ORBITERS HEAD TO MERCURY Known since Antiquity, Mercury has not yet delivered all its secrets. The international mission BepiColombo, scheduled to launch in the coming days, will study the planet's surface and compare its magnetic field with that of the Earth. Apart from Earth, Mercury is the only terrestrial planet with its own magnetic field, and yet it has only been visited by two space missions so far. This is indeed no easy task: because it is so close to the Sun, a spacecraft that misses the Swift Planet's weak gravitational field will inevitably plunge towards the solar surface, heated to a fiery 5,500 °C. The European and Japanese space agencies, ESA and JAXA, have therefore worked in close collaboration to ensure BepiColombo's success. The mission, which comprises two orbiters, is scheduled to launch from Kourou, French Guiana, on the night of 19-20 October aboard an Ariane 5 rocket. After a seven-year journey and two flybys of Venus to benefit from a gravity assist, it will then survey Mercury's surface, atmosphere, and magnetosphere for two years, until 2027. From Mariner to Bepi In the 1970s, during a mission mainly focused on Venus, the American spacecraft Mariner 10 carried out three flybys of Mercury. One of the researchers involved was a professor at the University of Padua, Italy, called Giuseppe "Bepi" Colombo. The new spacecraft, the very first collaboration between ESA and JAXA, was named after him. During the brief flybys, Mariner 10 was able to map half of Mercury and detect its magnetic field. Although it is much weaker than Earth's, it shows that the core of the planet is still active. Mariner 10 also confirmed the presence of an exosphere, an extremely tenuous atmosphere extending to very high altitudes. Many years later, NASA launched the MESSENGER[1] spacecraft. Placed in orbit around Mercury in March 2011, it crashed onto its surface in April 2015 when it ran out of fuel. It confirmed Mariner 10's observations and carried out further mapping and surveys of the surface. In particular, MESSENGER discovered evidence not only of volcanic activity and plate tectonics, but also of water ice: due to Mercury's extremely small axial tilt, no direct sunlight ever reaches the bottom of impact craters at the poles. "Although MESSENGER carried a magnetometer and equipment to measure ions and energetic particles, the spacecraft's main mission was to survey the planet, its thin atmosphere and its surface," explains Dominique Delcourt, CNRS senior researcher and director of the LPC2E[2], in charge of the ion mass spectrometer on board BepiColombo's Japanese-designed orbiter, MMO[3]. "In the presence of an intrinsic magnetic field, a magnetic cavity forms in space. This is called the magnetosphere, where many particle transport and acceleration processes take place." One Mission, Two Orbiters The BepiColombo mission comprises two orbiters carrying a science payload of nearly 100 kilograms. The first one, MPO (Bepi)[4], will be dedicated to fully mapping the planet and studying its surface, internal structure, and exosphere, while the second, MMO (renamed Mio), will study its magnetic environment. Once at their destination, Mio will be released first, followed by Bepi, which will be placed into the lowest orbit ever achieved around Mercury. Delcourt is upbeat: "This wider array of instruments will enable us to not only make new discoveries, but also review MESSENGER's data. By combining observations from both orbiters, we will also be in a position to perform what you might call stereoscopic measurements, something that was previously impossible." The MMO orbiter will complete one rotation in just four seconds, enabling its instruments to point in all directions in space in search of neutral or ionized particles and electromagnetic waves. With a higher resolution than the MESSENGER instrument, the MSA[5] ion spectrometer, developed at the LPP[6] in collaboration with Japanese and German teams, can distinguish between heavy atoms only one atomic mass unit apart, such as potassium and calcium. "These measurements will enable us to characterize ejected planetary material," says Delcourt. "As a result of meteorite bombardment and the solar wind, matter is ejected from the surface of Mercury. It can then be ionized by the Sun's ultraviolet radiation, and transported and accelerated around the planet." By studying these ions, it will be possible to analyze the composition of the surface without having to land on it. A Model Magnetic Field The magnetic field of Mercury is also an interesting generic model. Observing a magnetosphere that is smaller than ours should improve our understanding of the behavior of both neutral and ionized matter in space. At such a short distance from the Sun, the density of the solar wind means that it has a greater impact on the planet. Another interesting factor is that Mercury's highly elliptical orbit causes significant cyclical variations in this exposure. As a result, BepiColombo's various scientific instruments are likely to be kept extremely busy. Six of them were designed with the participation of eight CNRS laboratories, including the LPC2E, the IAS[7], IPGP[8], the Research Institute in Astrophysics and Planetology (IRAP)[9], the LAM[10], LATMOS[11], LESIA[12], and LPP. At the LATMOS, Éric Quemerais is the lead scientist for PHEBUS. This ultraviolet spectrometer scans frequencies ranging from 50 to 320 nanometers, as well as a few lines used to detect calcium and potassium. Analyzing Mercury's Surface "We cover a wider spectral range that includes elements that were invisible to MESSENGER, such as helium, sulfur, ionized calcium, dihydrogen, etc.," Quemerais explains. "Thanks to a better signal-to-noise ratio, we also have an improved detection limit." And whereas the American spectrometer was aligned with its probe, PHEBUS has an independent pointing mechanism. This allows it to choose its direction and provides better spatial and temporal coverage in orbit. "The exosphere gives an idea of the composition of Mercury's surface and of its outermost layers," Quemerais adds. "For instance, we know that we will detect calcium and sodium, but we also expect to find magnesium, potassium, and oxygen, whose presence has not yet been systematically confirmed." Another advantage of ultraviolet light is that it reflects off ice in a different way, which means that PHEBUS will be able to spot any water ice present. "This technique has already been employed on the Moon," says Quemerais. "We will use these changes in the amount of reflected light to map Mercury's two poles." Because of its specific orbit, selected so that it could survey the North Pole, MESSENGER was only able to map half the planet. BepiColombo thus promises to provide the scientific community with a wealth of new data. In June 2020 in Orléans (central France), Delcourt will be organizing the next important conference dedicated to the Swift Planet. "Of course, BepiColombo won't have reached its destination by then, but we will nonetheless be able to make use of MESSENGER's data," he explains. No doubt the scientists at that time will have their sights set on Venus, which Bepi Colombo will be about to swing past, propelled on its way to Mercury, its final destination. Abdul Sattar Edhi
 Founder of Edhi.
Dr. Abdul Sattar Edhi, NI, LPP, RMA, IBP, GPA, MSP (Memoni, Urdu: عبدالستار ایدھی‎, Gujarati: અબ્દુલ સત્તાર ઇદી), or Maulana Edhi, is a prominent Pakistani philanthropist, social activist, public figure and an humanitarian. He is the founder and head of the Edhi Foundation, a non-profit social welfare organization in Pakistan. Together with his wife, Bilquis Edhi, he received the 1986 Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service. He is also the recipient of the Lenin Peace Prize and the Balzan Prize. In 2006, Institute of Business Administration Pakistan conferred an honoris causa degree of Doctor of Social Service Management for his services. In September 2010, Edhi was also awarded an honorary degree of Doctorate by the University of Bedfordshire.[1]In 1985 Edhi received the Nishan-e-Imtiaz from the Government of Pakistan.[2]
 He was born in 1928, in the city of Bantva in what is now western India. Edhi's first interaction with human suffering occurred at the age of eleven, when his mother was physically paralyzed and later suffered from mental illness. Edhi spent his waking hours caring for her, and her worsening health and eventual death left a lasting impact on his life. In 1947, at the age of 19, Mr. Edhi's family was forced to flee their hometown and relocate to Karachi. Finding himself in a new city without any resources, Edhi resolved to dedicate his life to aiding the poor, and over the last sixty years, he has single handedly changed the face of welfare in Pakistan.
 Edhi founded the Edhi Foundation, with an initial sum of a mere five thousand rupees. Regarded as a guardian for the poor, Edhi began receiving numerous donations, which allowed him to expand his services. To this day, the Edhi Foundation continues to grow in both size and service, and is currently the largest welfare organization in Pakistan. Since its inception, the Edhi Foundation has rescued over 20,000 abandoned infants, rehabilitated over 50,000 orphans and has trained over 40,000 nurses. It also runs over three hundred and thirty welfare centers in rural and urban Pakistan which operate as food kitchens, rehabilitation homes, shelters for abandoned women and children and clinics for the mentally handicapped.[3]
 Edhi has remained a simple and humble man. To this day, he owns two pairs of clothes, has never taken a salary from his organization and lives in a small two bedroom apartment over his clinic in Karachi.[4][5] He has been recommended for a Nobel Peace prize by the Prime Minister of Pakistan. On June 25, 2013 Edhi’s kidneys failed and it was announced that he will be on dialysis for the rest of his life
Early life
Edhi was born in 1928 in Bantva in the Gujarat, India.[7] When he was eleven, his mother became paralyzed and later grew mentally ill and died when he was 19. His personal experiences caused him to develop a system of services for old, mentally ill and challenged people. Edhi and his family migrated to Pakistan in 1947. He initially started as a pedlar, later became a commission agent selling cloth in the wholesale market in Karachi. After a few years, he established a free dispensary with the help from his community. He later established a welfare trust, "Edhi Trust".[8]
 Abdul Sattar Edhi was married in 1965 to Bilquis, a nurse who worked at the Edhi dispensary.[9] The couple have four children, two daughters and two sons. Bilquis runs the free maternity home at the headquarter in Karachi and organizes the adoption of illegitimate and abandoned babies..
Charity work
Edhi Foundation runs the world's largest ambulance service and operates free nursing homes, orphanages, clinics, women's shelters, and rehab centers for drug addicts and mentally ill individuals.[10] It has run relief operations in Africa, Middle East, the Caucasus region, eastern Europe and US where it provided aid following the New Orleans hurricane of 2005. In November 2011, Edhi was recommended for a Nobel Peace prize by the Pakistani Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani.[11] Abdul Sattar Edhi suffers Renal Failure as announced on 26 June 2013 at SIUT and needs kidney donation.[12]
Travel issues
In the early 1980s he was arrested by Israeli troops while entering Lebanon. In 2006, he was detained in Toronto, Canada, for 16 hours. In January 2008, US immigration officials interrogated Edhi at the John F. Kennedy Airport in New York for over eight hours, and seized his passport and other documents. When asked about the frequent detention, Edhi said "The only explanation I can think of is my beard and my dress."[13] In January 2009, Edhi was refused entry to Gaza by Egyptian authorities.[14]

How Low Can Unemployment Go?
Compared to the dark days circa 2009, the unemployment rate in the U.S. is stellar — but how much better can it get? Although the rate actually increased to 4% in June from 3.8% in May, economists still expect it to fall in the months ahead. In fact, as The Wall Street Journal reports, some are suggesting that unemployment could be headed to a 50-year low.
Currently the Journal expects employment to reach 3.7% by the end of the year and retreat to 3.6% sometime in 2019. Interestingly, if the rate were to make it down to 3.5%, it would be the first time since December 1969 it had fallen that low. The few times the unemployment rate has fallen below that level have been during times of major wars, such as the 1.2% unemployment rate seen in 1944.
Despite the rosy predictions, economists say there’s likely a floor to the unemployment rate that we’re quickly approaching — if we haven’t reached it already. That’s because there’s a level of unemployment that’s believed to be a “natural rate,” meaning that anything below it could lead to an overheating of the economy. Side effects of such a situation could include major inflation among other issues. According to PNC Financial Services Group chief economist Gus Faucher, “The economy isn’t built to function at a consistent 3.5% unemployment rate.” Meanwhile other experts argue that the normal and sustainable rate is a bit higher, with a WSJ survey finding the average answer to be 4%.
Another side effect of a “hot” economy is that employers may have a hard time hiring. This is something we’ve already seen as the latest National Federation of Independent Business survey finding that 36% of businesses have open positions they can’t fill. That said, such a situation could serve to bring non-participants (who aren’t counted in the unemployment rate) to join or rejoin the workforce. KPMG LPP chief economist Constance Hunter expressed this sentiment to WSJ, saying “There is a hope that participation will increase slightly with a ’hot’ labor market. If this happens it will help dampen inflationary effects.”
Of course these days you can’t talk about the economy without discussing the on-going trade war the United States is engaged in with China and other nations. This week the U.S. unveiled a list of $200 billion in Chinese imports that would be hit with a 10% tariff. At this point it’s unclear how the continuing trade issues will impact economic growth and hiring, although it is certainly something to watch out for. However, even with those fears, it seems that the unemployment rate could soon make history as more Americans head off to work.

LAPO – the First Cryptocurrency to Reach Stability Without Being Backed by Assets
The cryptocurrency market has matured to a certain degree, but it is still far from reaching a point when people find digital currencies useful for regular payments. The main purpose of crypto investors is to speculate and save value in the long-term rather than benefit from their functionalities. Even though Bitcoin was launched as an alternative currency and payment system, few people use it to buy goods and services online. Many cryptocurrencies start with a goal but eventually end up in being used for the sole purpose of generating profits based on the price surge over time.
LAPO, a blockchain-powered ecosystem that is about to be launched soon, wants to address the mentioned problems by providing a cryptocurrency that is stable over time and may be adopted for everyday business.
LAPO Coin (LAX), as the digital currency is called, will be part of the LAPO ecosystem, which is aimed to become a link between the traditional financial space and the cryptocurrency market.
LAPO Ecosystem Components
The LAPO ecosystem will revolve around the LAPO ePlatform, which will include a multi-currency wallet, payment processing functionality in multiple currencies, real-time decentralized trading, private transactions, and smart contract layer with the option to create new tokens, which will be linked to the LAPO Bank – another key element of the ecosystem.
Here are the ePlatform’selements and features with their short descriptions:
LAPO Trading Platform (LTP) – this will be a decentralized exchange where users will be able to trade LAPO tokens, LAPO coin, altcoins, and fiat currencies.
Merchant Portal – a crypto wallet designed to provide businesses with intelligence capabilities and reporting features. Merchant customers will be able to download it on a mobile device and enjoy functions like LEG, LSP, LDM, and LPP (described below).
LAPO eGateway (LEG) – user-friendly API to help third parties like online shops integrate payment requests in any digital currency;
LAPO Sale Point (LSP) – this feature will help business users accept LAX and other cryptocurrencies. The app will be compatible with any smartphone or smart device;
LAPO Direct Marketing (LDM) – this features will allow businesses to create tailored promotions that will push into the LAPO wallet holders;
LAPO Payment Protection (LPP) – the system is meant to protect clients from fraud, scams and stolen items;
LAPO Foundation – the team will have the mission to support the education of children around the world through the implementation of innovative technologies.
LAPO Stability Fund – the fund will be used to keep the coin away from pump and dump schemes and other artificial means to push the price up.
The stability fund will be the key element that will ensure the LAX has a stable price and is not misused or exploited by scammers. This, along with other features and options, will make the ePlatform safe and user-friendly, enabling business and individual customers adopt the technology for everyday operations.
How Will the Stability Fund Influence the Price?
To make LAX feasible for businesses, the fund will be used to keep the price stable by ensuring the protection against pump and dump schemes and other types of scam methods. Previously, cryptocurrencies like BitShares or Stablused different ways to keep the coin’s price stable, but they involve collateralized obligations or long/short positions on an underlying asset.
Elsewhere, USDT, a token issued by Tether, maintains a stable price by pegging the coin to the US dollar. However, such a coin doesn’t have other functionalities other than being a dollar-backed digital asset.
LAPO’s approach will be entirely different, as it will address the volatility challenge with the implementation of Seigniorage Shares, a concept introduced by Robert Sams of Clearmatics back in 2014.
Here is how Seigniorage Shares work:
Let’s say hypothetically, on day one, the total supply of LAX is 100, and each coin is worth $1.00.
The next day, each coin increased in value by 10% to $1.10.
The Stability Fund will now have to sell 0.1*100 new coins via an auction to users who hold shares, immediately destroying the shares it buys.
After the auction, the LAX coin supply will increase to 110, pushing the price down to $1.00.
On the third day, the value of each LAX drops to $0.90.
To stabilize the price, the fund now sells shares via an auction process to coin holders until the LAX supply drops to 0.99*100 via a buy/burn process.
After the auction, the LAX price will bounce back to $1.00.
With the implementation of Seigniorage Shares, the LAX price will be maintained in a narrow range so that businesses and individuals taking part in the LAPO ecosystem could enjoy stability. Otherwise, no company will be willing to risk with its goods and services by linking them with an unstable coin.
LAPO Coin is the central currency of the LAPO ePlatform, and its price will be stabilized without the need for other assets. The initial Presale has already started on May 1, and investors have the chance to buy coins at a great price until June 1. The ICO will start the 15th of June 2018.
