LOTRO ask game!

(I’m going to do both 38 and 39 because I have A LOT of opinions on the soundtrack, you have been warned.)

1 - How did you first get into LotRO? Do you remember when you started playing?

Aw man, I remember I started playing in the summer of 2014 when I’d just turned 13 and had no idea how MMOs worked but loved Tolkien to bits. I don’t remember exactly how I found out about LOTRO, but I’m pretty sure it’s just the fact that I like games and I like Tolkien that led me to it by chance on an internet search. My first character was a Burglar? A Hunter? Named Bronvien who never made it out alive from the server closures in Snowbourn. I’ve kept her there since out of posterity and remembrance, but maybe I’ll transfer her to Crickhollow or Landroval when transfers are open again, or remake her entirely.

10 - Do you have any favorite reputation faction(s)?

Anything Rangers-related has my heart, they’ve been there since the beginning and continue to be a huge part of the game, so I make it a point to get to max rep with them whenever I can. A few other factions that are especially memorable to me the most are the Riders of Stangard, Men of Dunland, the Wilderfolk and the Grey Mountains Expedition!

30 - Do you take a lot of screenshots? (have any to show off?)

Absolutely, have these from some of my favourite outfit photoshoots! (Also going to shamelessly plug my outfit blog that’s going to be updated with new outfits very soon!)

38 - Do you have any favorite soundtracks from around the game?

Buckle up kiddos, y’all are about to hear some OPINIONS.

First off, I need to write a disclaimer, because absolutely nothing will ever top the Riders of Rohan and Helm’s Deep soundtrack for me, so anything from those two expansions are immediately off the table, but I’m still going share one favourite track from each of those regardless so you know where I’m coming from.

So to start, here are my two favourite tracks from Riders of Rohan and Helm’s Deep:

Riders of Rohan - Roaming Free I feel like if I had to pick one track that encapsulates Rohan, this is THE track. The chorus!!! The strings!!! I love everything about this so much and this reason I spend so much time in Rohan, even at level cap.

Helm’s Deep - Across the Divide On the other end of the spectrum, we have something more somber and foreboding. This one just tugs at my heart strings so much, and knowing what’s about to go down in Helm’s Deep makes it all the more oh-so-deliciously-tragic.

Anyway, there’s a lot of tracks that I love, but since so many of them are pretty well-known and beloved (like this dreamy track from Evendim), I’m going to talk about the tracks that I always stop to listen to and don’t think get enough attention:

Siege of Mirkwood - Gathbúrz A lowkey number that is only played in very specific parts of Southern Mirkwood. A hauntingly beautiful and dark track that ebbs and flows and keeps you on your toes as you approach Dol Guldur. I can listen to this one for days. I once accidentally put this on my phone speaker during class but it was so quiet and understated I didn’t notice it for a good half an hour.

Rise of Isengard - Nan Curunír variation Such a strong and memorable piece! The moment the trumpet and drums came in, I was hooked. It’s mysterious and menacing, but at the same time very grounded. It lets you know that it’s there and doesn’t shy away from being bold without being obnoxious.

Minas Morgul - The Sons of Isildur A gentle but powerful track that really captures the former glory of the Kings of Gondor. It’s been quite a while since we’ve had something so soft but so regal. This one’s not in a hurry, and carries with it a certain weight and grandiose amplified by the soft drums in the background. I have a lot of feelings about Minas Morgul and it shows.

Where Dragons Dwell - Memories of Tharrazhâr I don’t think I’ve heard a more beautiful track since Riders of Rohan, Bill Champagne really hit it out of the park with this one. There’s hope and desperation in equal measure in this track, it’s a whole journey rolled into five minutes and forty-two seconds. I remember playing through the expansion back in April 2020 in the middle of the pandemic and just being awed by the music and how well it fit Ered Mithrin and the writing.

And now with some honourable mentions:

Riders of Rohan - LOTRO Legacy This one holds so many memories for me, it was the menu music when I first started playing. It used to catch me off guard with how LOUD it was but now that it’s gone, I miss it dearly whenever I’m not running around in the Gap of Rohan.

Mines of Moria - We Cannot Get Out Whenever I get tired of Moria, this one picks me right back up. This one’s like a gulp of fresh air and a glass of cold water when you’ve been underground for way too long.

Shadows of Angmar - Prancing Pony variation A delightful little jig that warms my heart, this is the one I keep in my Breeland houses.

39 - Are there any soundtracks you particularly dislike?

All of the following should not be taken as seriously as my “soundtracks that I like” essay review. I’ve had plenty of “girl why do you hate fun” discussions about the game with my best friend of 13 years and counting who also plays LOTRO, in which the soundtrack was brought up plenty of times. There may be some hot takes.

Shadows of Angmar - The Dunedain I actually like this track a lot, but the thing is this only plays in short bursts in so many “save the Rangers” and “fight by the Rangers” instances that it’s left somewhat of a bad taste in my mouth. It’s like only having the smallest crumb from the crust of your favourite pie. I LIKE this track. A LOT. But it’s just never played in full enough for me to appreciate it while playing the game, so I ended up listening to it outside of the game. No, seriously, I have it saved in my music folder so I can listen to it offline.

Pretty much everything that plays in Gondor EXCEPT THIS BELFALAS TRACK To me, every single track (except that one track) in Gondor feels...garish, gaudy, and intrusive. Everything is just too much and over-elaborate for me to enjoy. I’m also willing to give this Dol Amroth track a pass, but it’s on thin ice.

Shadows of Angmar - War Pipes I liked this track, until I didn’t. Incidentally, I also hate doing the Trouble in Tuckborough instance because I keep getting turned around in the dark in the godawful urban planning of The Shire. It’s not very fun trying to find your way around Tuckborough in the dark with bagpipes blasting in your ears. If it weren’t for Trouble in Tuckborough, I’d like this track more.

Elf music in general, unless there’s harps A very controversial take, but I can’t stand the cacophony of high-pitched flutes and vocals and shrill strings. I do enjoy the tracks where the harp is the dominant instrument though, like this one. I think it’s the amount of back and forth with Elrond in Volume 1 of the Epic that’s worn out Elf music for me.

Commissions

So, this is the first time I’m doing this...so please be gentle! I’m going to be opening up two commission slots for my first time out of the gate...

What sort of artwork is this? These are called renders. Well, what’s a render? In really simplified terms, a render is a piece of artwork made in a 3D rendering program (in my case, Daz Studio). 3D models are composed into a scene and then rendered into a 2D image. It all sounds simple, but getting from A to Z is where things get interesting, and where the artwork comes to life. What tools do you use? Daz Studio (I use NVIDIA IRAY as my render engine) ZBrush Adobe Photoshop 2019 Types of Commissions being offered: - Single character only - Original characters only (sorry, no NPC’s at this time) - Simple or studio-style background, including in-game screenshots (swtor-only) Available Species: - Human - Mirialan - Twi’lek (simple headpiece or scarf/bandana...but I can do hoods! Take that, BioWare! *giggle-snort*) - Chiss - Rattataki (I’ve never done one, but I’d imagine I could) - Elf (including Night Elf, Blood Elf) - Dwarf (this would be a case by case basis depending on what fandom) - Please Note...these limitations are not by choice...some species, such as Sith Purebloods, require real-time modeling to create, and would require much more time and cost...other species are just not out there to be had at all.

Considerations & Stipulations: - I work mostly with SWTOR (Star Wars), but I can also work with WoW (though I’m not personally familiar with the lore), LoTRO (Lord of the Rings), and Dragon Age - Due to the need to keep costs (and thus my time investment) down, I cannot create complex body paints, tattoo, or scar work. I also cannot create cybernetic implants (though I do have access to cybernetic limbs). In the case of SWTOR characters, I do have access to most in-game character creation overlays (as pictured on my Mirialan characters above, however I do not have in-game Twi’lek markings...if you can find them on the interwebz somewhere, let me know). - As I am working with photorealistic 3D models, I cannot exactly replicate in-game armor and clothing sets. I will do my best to keep to a given look. That goes the same for in-game weapons, including lightsabers. - For SWTOR, if you would like to use an in-game screenshot for a background, the image must be of 3840 x 2160 (4k) resolution with graphics on max. You can also let me know the specific location and I can get the screenshot for you, though it will be of an angle of my choosing. - I will not use tattoos off of people on the interwebz. - You will need to provide an in-game screenshot of your character in good lighting (I would recommend the character selection screen), as well as a real-world face claim. I would also ask that you provide some personality details (I don’t need a novel) as well as what sort of piece you are looking for (feel free to reference my work as example).

Price: - Pieces will start at $50USD, to be paid upon completion via PayPal - The best place to reach out to me is on Tumblr or Discord (username MelissaGT in both places) - Extras, such as simple tattoos or scars, will be discussed on a case-by-case basis (this would be outside of the SWTOR character creation tattoos) - I cannot commit to a deadline, however I will keep you apprised of progress and reach out for approval before the final render is made - Upon payment, you will receive a super-sized finished piece (minimum 5000px) that should be plenty big enough for print should you desire

She was dreaming, but not like she usually dreamt. This place was not one of memory, however dream-like wandering through the past could sometimes seem. Something – like the tide of the river – had swept off her mind, brought her to this place that was like and unlike other places she had seen.

It was not mountainous and biting cold, like her journey through the terrifying Hithaeglir, nor was it fragrantly dark, dappled in shades of green, sunlight piercing the canopy of the Great Forest where she had been born. Nor does it look like the forest outside the Halls where she lives now, or the vast caverns of her home.

There were trees here, strange and covered in grey-ness – lichen, perhaps – never quite real to her, even through the veil of a dream. There were birds in the forest – or is it a garden? – though their tunes were unfamiliar to her ears. The air felt heavy with moisture, permeated by a scent she cannot place, at once familiar and foreign.

The serenity of the trees – she had always felt the emotions tied to places and this dreamscape was no different, welcoming her spirit-self with calm acceptance – soothed her fear as she wandered further into the dream. Perhaps this dream is the Queen’s doing? Her powers are strange and defy understanding even by those who care to study such skills.

“Who are you?” The question echoed in the mist that seemed to spring into being between one moment and then next and yet as though it had always been part of this dream-place. She shivered in response, though the voice was curious rather than accusatory. Looking around, she missed the speaker, no figure emerging from the mist though the voice repeated its question.

“Who are you?” This time sharply, as though the speaker was used to obedience when it commanded answers.

“Tell me your name, mist-friend,” she asked, taking a deep breath that puffed against the fog swirling around her, “and I shall tell you mine.”

Looking around herself, she almost missed the thickening part of the mist, coalescing into itself until it had the rough shape of a person, becoming clearer and clearer until she was staring at an elleth, those silver-blue eyes drawing her a step closer. In her chest, her heart pounded, staring at the lady as though to commit her face to memory.

Her hair was dark, like richly polished mahogany, though her skin was moonlight pale. The hair had been cut short – shorter than any elleth would wear it – and she was dressed in dark fur, a pelt of some white animal wrapped around her shoulders.

Lifting her arm, trailing its fine gossamer sleeve, she reached for the strange elleth’s face, tracing the shape of her cheekbones, her fingers hovering just above the skin – if this elleth was a dream, she did not want to know – until she drew back her hand, cradling it against her chest, resting above her wildly beating heart. Her mouth was dry, her mind filled with sudden yearning reflected in those icy eyes – not cold, no, but the colour of ice like the crevasses she remembered from the mountains – longing to see her with her true eyes.

“Írimë,” she said, taking a step closer and raising her fur-gloved hand in turn, “my name is Írimë.”

“Írimë…” she breathed, wanting to laugh at the sheer joy of knowing her name, “I am… Lothuial.” As she spoke, it occurred to her to wonder if Írimë was the Deceiver in disguise, if she had just given her name to one who would enthral her, but the peaceful surroundings did not change, Írimë’s smile deepening, turning softer, calming Lothuial’s racing heart.

“Lothuial…” she said, licking her lips as though she was tasting the name and finding it pleasing. Lothuial shivered, feeling a flash of heat pass through her, something that felt curiously like want. “Who are you?” Írimë continued, “Why are you in my dream?”

“It is you who are in mine,” Lothuial replied, buoyed by a sudden feeling of elation, “Írimë.” Írimë’s name felt good in her mouth, felt like it belonged there, making a space for this dark-haired elleth in her heart like she had always lived there. Írimë did not comment, frowning slightly as she nipped at her glove, pulling it off with her teeth and dropping it at her feet.

“This looks like Lórien,” she murmured, “and yet… not.” Taking the last step remaining between them, she reached out, cupping Lothuial’s cheek.

Lothuial froze, something warm and colourful blooming into life in her soul, spreading its wings to soar in Elbereth’s beloved starlight.

“You feel… real…” she breathed bringing her own hands up to run lightly across the furs hiding Írimë’s limbs. Love, she thought, at once scared and serene as the feeling filled her, reaching for Írimë with tendrils as thin as spider’s silk. “Where are you?”

Please be real… please be somewhere I can… find you. I need you.

“We’re crossing the Ice – the Helcaraxë,” Írimë revealed, one finger running down to trace Lothuial’s upper lip.

Lothuial drew back, horrified. Fear enveloped her in an instant.

“But… you can’t!” she cried, catching Írimë’s wrists and staring into her eyes, her heart beating fearfully.

I can’t lose you – not when I’ve finally found you!

The Ice… could not be crossed, everyone knew that – not even the Dark One’s Yrc dared to try; the Helcaraxë was an uncrossable wasteland of ice and death, even before the fortress of Angband had darkened the lands outside the Girdle.

“We must,” Írimë shrugged. Her smile was sharp like the blade of a warrior’s sword, and Lothuial had the sudden thought that the other was a warrior.

Biting her lip, she changed her grip, holding Írimë’s hand gently, rubbing her thumb across the skin that held the tell-tale callouses of a swordsman.

“I live in Menegroth,” she said softly, feeling her heart break with the fear that Írimë might never stand before her in the flesh. “If you do not…” she could not say the word, feeling that to do so would invite a horrible reality to come to pass, “- come to me -” Lifting her hand, she raised Írimë’s to her lips, pressing a kiss into the scarred palm. “- Please?”

Far far away, in a tent made of walrus skins, Írimë woke up shivering, her hröa filled with a throbbing sweetness, her palm tingling with the remembrance of soft lips.

“I will come for you… Lothuial,” she whispered to herself, gently hushing Idril when she murmured in her sleep. “My Lothuial… in Menegroth.”

first, nini’s questions:

1. How many pets have you had in your life?

one. I’ve always wanted them but my mom and I have always lived in tiny apartments and had no way to care for a pet so it wasn’t until I was 17 that we adopted a kitten!! his name was merlin and he was the laziest, moodiest lil ball of fluff I’ve ever met. I.. had to give him away a year later because we moved to a place even smaller that wouldn’t allow pets so long story short I’m scarred for life and don’t think I can ever take any more pets without feeling guilty to my bone

this is merlin btw I love him with all my heart and he now lives in a farm. as far as I know anyway.. :(

2. Do you believe in destiny? Why?

mmm interesting question. weird, metaphysical theories aside, I don’t believe anything is set in stone per se, but I do believe that some things are just... meant to be? in a way? for example, you can’t tell me ryan and shane weren’t meant to be friends and find each other in such an unlikely place as they did. one of my mottos, completely stripped from context because it’s from a rather pretentious tv show, is “the universe is rarely so lazy”. meaning that good things happen for a reason, and that you trailed that path for that to happen. yknow what I’m saying? I can’t really explain this without writing a 10 page essay because that’s just how my gemini ass thinks

3. If you could chose one person on the great beyond, would you take the chance to talk to them?

you mean someone who has passed away? oh yeah, I would talk to my grandmother. she was raising me and died when she was 4 and that changed not only my entirely life but our whole extended family dynamic... so many questions.

4. From all your hobbies, which one would you love to make a living of?

oh man, writing. I’ve been dreaming of being a writer ever since I was 9 or something. never panned out but that would certainly be the dream. if I could work with videos, subtitling, tv shows, cinema etc that would also be dope as hell!

5. What’s your favorite color palette to wear?

fkgjfsdgiusfdksd I have no fashion sense whatsoever, idk? I do like to wear dark clothes (because weight..) and reds (because pale).

6. What’s your opinion on queerbaiting?

I don’t have the time for it. for starters, it’s something that usually comes from people with very poor writing skills that can’t come up with plots interesting enough to keep viewers/readers hooked in. that already says something. no offense to anyone who is a fan of shows like these, but when it’s mostly written by white men I just don’t have any high hopes for it. you can ask flavs what my reaction was like when I realized the character I had headcanon’ed as wlw in hannibal was actually a wlw. I couldn’t believe it, because what???? since when does that happen, especially in a show run by a white man??? kjdfghsjgd

I think this is part of a bigger conversation but my point is, don’t fall for it. I know it’s all part of the fight for representation, asking big names to produce big shows with lgbtq+ characters in it and so on, but for the love of god, watch something else too!!!! let GOT rot and die!!!!!!!!! look up different, smaller, cheaper shows, that’s where you find lgbtq+ content creators!!!!!! there’s so many wlw webseries out there, you wouldn’t believe it. you have a choice. don’t give any more of your time and love and word-of-mouth to shows/movies that clearly have no interest in being more diverse. they don’t deserve you.

and that’s not to say any of it is on us. quite on the contrary, they’re using us. but aside from calling out their bullshit, we do have a chance to boost lgbtq+ content creators. don’t let them fool you into thinking they’re doing you any favors, or that they’re our last chance so we should be paying attention to what they’re doing/saying. fuck them!!!! you can’t queerbait me because I don’t trust you or give you the chance to do it. and you can shove your very straight, very white shows where the sun doesn’t shine, @ hollywood.

7. Is there a language you would love to speak?

french and korean, mostly. I can understand a little bit of both, but I really wish I was fluent :( oh, will to live and learn, where art thou...

8. Do you have, like, a dream so wild you think it’s impossible?

kjgnsfdkjhjjs having enough money to support myself and my mother??? I don’t have any big, wild dreams, I think. just.......... living comfortably would be a+

9. How many AUs of your own life do you have in your head?

oh man. I keep thinking about living somewhere in idk iceland or scotland just like... tending goats or something. that’s the most comfortable version of myself I can think of.

I also like to imagine if I could handle being a film director, because that sounds like fun. maybe a screenwriter? anything creative in films, really.

there’s also the unattainable dream of having a wife and idk maybe adopting a kid? and we’d just. support each other. and love each other. and that’s just. I. [cries]

I like to think how things would be if I were actually hot and not socially awkward.. I’d be someone completely different, basically lol

10. If you were to meet your younger self, do you think they would think you cool or not?

“jackpot” by block b looks creepy as shit but the context makes it such a clever yet fun video. take into account that these guys were screwed over by the kpop company that created the group, and that the lyrics talk about hitting jackpot in an industry that’s savage to say the least. to me this video is a visual representation of what a dangerous trap entertainment companies are in the kpop industry, and it also ties in with the groups’ story of being made into dolls by a company and then telling them to fuck off in the end lol

2. What’s a favourite memory of yours?

I have plenty of good memories, thank god. I think one of my favorites is just hanging out with my friends in 2008-9; one of their older brothers was driving us around town, we were listening to the white stripes at full volume, singing along, all sitting pressed up close together in his shitty car. man, my teenage years would’ve been fantastic if I had stayed there with them!!

3. Do you play video games? If so, which one’s your favourite?

I DO!!! I mean, not as much as I’d like because a) no money to spare on games/consoles, and b) I suck at basically everything. but I’m obsessed with paladins these days, and I’m also a big fan of LOTRO. I like horror games--mostly the resident evil and silent hill type--and fps. I grew up playing some tomb raider, medal of honor, resident evil... oh, those were the days.

4. How did you first get into [your fandom of choice]?

with bfu it was that kind of thing where I’d see a meme or two cross my dash and it was always this ridiculous screenshot, or those “that’s it, that’s the show” kinda things with dozens of thousands of notes... until one day I was incredibly anxious, and I needed to watch something or I’d never finish the assignments I had for college. so I just thought “oh hey I should check out that unsolved thing people like so much, it’s buzzfeed so it’s probably good bg noise to work with” lol and it did work, and I did finish my assignments, and that means that I first watched the show barely paying any attention to it because I was busy doing something else. but ryan’s and shane’s voices helped me relax and to this day they still help a lot with my anxiety, to the point that I need to keep coming back every minute or so during episodes because I get distracted just listening to their voices and not absorbing a word lol

5. How did you first get into fandom in general?

uhh.. well, I was a big “pottermaniac” (that’s how I called it) since I was 9, but that was before I realized fandom was a Thing on the internet too. I remember when I was maybe 10 or 11, I entered a chatroom (god, those were wild) just in time to see someone saying in all caps HARRY POTTER IS GREAT AND YOU’RE ALL DUMB FOR NOT SEEING IT or something fkdsjgfdugfsdk and it was this girl using the nickname fawkes. she was older than me, I think that 15 or something, and we exchanged addresses (!!! how am I alive!!!) and were pen pals for a while. but it took me so fucking long to actually find the fandom online that I think my first brush with it was with the arctic monkeys forum I found online in 2008, where I mistakenly said I liked “the muse” and people laughed at me so I never went back to it lol then in 2010 I found out about kpop and that’s when I really dived head-first into fandom life. took me long enough (tbf I was very against the notion of being a “fan” because I was an idiot).

6. What’s at the top of your bucket list?

great fucking question. no idea. I guess.. traveling overseas? if we’re talking wild, distant things. but closer to my reality, getting a job that pays me at least the minimum wage disjgdfgkfsdk #fuckinternships

7. What’s something not many people know about you?

I love dancing and miss it like hell.

8. What’s your favourite medium for storytelling - movie, book, television, musical, comic, internet video, video game, something else? Why that medium?

ohhhhhhh this is an interesting question. as much as I love writing, and think that’s one of the best things we humans have ever come up with, I do love.. musicals? not necessarily theater--although that’s great and I’d sell my soul to see chicago live--but I love the idea of telling stories through music. I really wish we could bring back the custom of telling stories orally, and through music, and that we could as society agree that collective singing is beautiful and should be reintroduced in our day-to-day lives. sure listening to (1) artist singing is great but hAVE YOU TRIED SINGING ALONG DURING A CONCERT WHERE EVERYONE ELSE IS SINGING TOO? best fucking feeling in the world.

we had two bands in brazil, in different periods of time, that were so incredibly famous they’re still cornerstones in our music history. one was legião urbana, some folk-ey rock band that had a couple of songs telling these really long stories that I LOVE with all my heart. faroeste caboclo is our bohemian rhapsody, most people my age or older know the lyrics to it. and mamonas assassinas was this comical (?) rock band that sang dumb, fun songs that usually told stories too and that was the best. I miss that kinda thing.

9. What’s your favourite food?

red meat, mainly churrasco. but I also can’t live without chocolate milk AND the whopper. capitalism has me by the stomach.

10. Do you have a joke to share?

fjgfsdgskfdgfsk I don’t.. it’s been so long since I last tried telling a joke, I don’t think I know any?

11. What song/artist helped you through your struggles?

pitty has been a big part of my life for some 14-odd years now. “be ok” by ingrid michaelson and “starlight” by muse were my anthems when depression hit hard during my teenage years. the white stripes has also been a constant, with gems like “blue orchid” and “a martyr for my love for you” turning into sort of theme songs for certain parts of my life. choi sam helped me through college. and even though they were a huge disappointment to the point that I stopped listening to them altogether, block b gave me a good 4 or 5 years of distraction from life.
