Somebody who knows more about D&D tell me if a LotRO DPS-focused hunter would spec directly as a D&D ranger or if it would maybe work better as more of a bow-restricted fighter?

Ethedis for the LOTRO ask game?
(for this ask game where you send in one of my OCs, and I give you a synopsis of what it would look like if they were the main NPC in a tutorial quest)
o hmm, I think there's a way I could be a little mean about this heheh
so I think that I mentioned at some point that before the elf intro, Ethedis had actually befriended Amdir. I haven't fleshed out all that much of it up until now, but I'm thinking this could be a short adventure with Ethedis and Amdir where you could see them being besties (before The Horrors)
this will probably just have to be one instance, as it would flow best into the Elf or Human starting zones and we don't need to stack two entire intro questlines on top of each other lol
(under the cut bc How Did This Get So Long??)
I think it actually starts in Rivendell, with the Player Character (probably an elf/human only intro) preparing to leave on the expedition to Ered Luin, at which point you are introduced to Elrond's excited young apprentice Ethedis, and the Ranger Amdir who is going to tag along for part of the trip but plans to part ways in Bree.
Fast travel to somewhere in the wilderness of the Trollshaws, you Ethedis and Amdir are a little ways ahead of the group to make sure the road is clear. Surprise! wood-trolls! combat tutorial! After the fight Ethedis will remark that it was the first time she's actually had to put her combat training to the test against a real foe, which surprises Amdir, who says that he wouldn't have guessed it was her first real fight. One of them might ask the player character about their combat experience, which would allow you to pick from a few different responses (always a fun roleplay option and tbh I wish they would use it in more quests). I think if the PC says they're also inexperienced Amdir will mention that he's very glad you're both catching on quickly and didn't get hurt (bc he would not have fun explaining how he let two newbies get injured on his watch, and would feel very bad. classic protective Ranger moment)
Fast travel again to somewhere in the Lone Lands, you all are camped near Weathertop. Ethedis is talking about the history of the area (it sounds like she's been talking about this for a while now), and overall seems very excited to be here and see this historical site in person. Amdir smiles and says he's glad that she's interested in Dunedain history, as it brings him comfort to know that others still wish to keep his people's history alive. Your character might be prompted to give an opinion on Ethedis' loredump, either saying they found it boring (which Ethedis will simply laugh off and say that's probably why she's not a minstrel, but Amdir will just glare at you) or say it was interesting (which will prompt both her and Amdir to loredump even more)
Once you make it to Breeland, somewhere in South Chetwood, Amdir says that he must part ways here. Ethedis says she's sad to see him go but hopes to meet him again once the expedition to Ered Luin is done, and Amdir will tell her that he looks forward to it if such a meeting can be arranged, but tells you both to be careful in your travels (vaguely alluding to a growing danger in Breeland.
Then you can have two different outcomes depending on your race:
If you're a human, you part ways with the Ered Luin expedition at the same time as Amdir. He will bid you farewell and safe travels, and says that he has urgent business to attend to before disappearing into the woods without further explanation (as Rangers are wont to do). Your quest objective tells you to head to Bree-Town, but after you've been heading in that direction for a while you run into a large group of Brigands and get knocked on the head. Wake up in the Blackwold jail, human intro progresses mostly as normal from that point onward (but without the combat tutorial) although Amdir's quest dialogue would be different. If we want to get really mean, maybe one of the last things he says to you as himself is something along the lines of "I fear... I will not make it to see our friend again... tell... tell her that I tried"
If you're an elf, shortly after Amdir departs Ethedis will offer to explain to you the history of Edhelion as it was told to her by her mother before she left for the Havens. Then you get the old elf intro instance but cut down a bit and framed as a flashback, there will also be an elf woman there with a vaguely familiar face holding a baby in her arms (it's never explicitly stated, but that's Ethedis' mom and baby Ethedis), she will be there when Ethedis' dad Talagan brings down the library and she collapse to her knees in a sobbing heap when it happens. No one draws attention to her but she's still There. Anyway after that you arrive in Ered Luin, quests progress as normal but Ethedis is along for the ride. Like when you go to talk to the survivors of Edhelion, Ethedis will be in the ruins with some quest comments ("Even after all this time, I can sense the sorrow in this place..." "The land remembers it like it was yesterday, and I understand now why we still leave it abandoned" and "I think this may have been my parent's house. And to think, we all could have lived here together..."), she's also going to have Opinions about the Dourhand's borderline-worship of Skorgrim lol
After everything in Thorin's Hall is over with, she will disappear for a little bit but rejoin the story during the united elf/dwarf assault on Rath Tarag. When she hears that you're planning to go to Bree next, she will ask you to try to find Amdir and see how he's doing (surely you'll only have good news! surely!)
Later on you might run into Ethedis in Rivendell, and she'll have a short quest for you, talking about missing your fallen friend but finding comfort in your shared memories of him (very similar in tone to Gorwen's quest in Thornhad after finishing Before the Shadow) Amdir was the first mortal friend she knew, and she didn't realize how much this loss would sting. Overall it's a bittersweet reunion.
(man I really saw Ethedis and was like "the elf into didn't give her enough trauma. she's connected to the human one too!" someone please make me Give Her A Break)

Obscure Tolkien Blorbo: Round 2
Narmeleth vs Faramir (son of Ondoher)
Narmeleth:
Elf of Lindon & later the Gwaith-i-Mirdain; crafted & entrapped by a minor ring of power (Lord of the Rings Online character)
Narmelleth!!! I mean. She's got it all. Corrupted by the Gift Lord, Ring-forger, Bane of Fornost, Earnur's Worstie, COOL OUTFIT, Redemption Arc we didn't start the fire
she actually managed to destroy the lesser ring of power "Annatar" had used to corrupt her, which is like, SO impressive considering how long she had been under its influence. She also fought Mordirith (the steward of Angmar) and his new champion Mordrambor (a universally loathed NPC that everyone rightfully hates for personal reasons) single-handedly!! I don't mean alone, the player character was there, but I mean she did it single-handed. with one hand. she lost a hand and kept fighting. and WON!!!
Faramir (son of Ondoher):
The younger son of King Ondoher of Gondor, killed in battle along with his father and older brother. Also a character in Lord of the Rings Online.
more blorboganda later but! he's been hanging out on dagorlad as a ghost bc he snuck out to join the fighting against the wainriders with his dad and brother and they all got killed. really wants to help the rangers of ithilien once he gets out of the 'ghost who had to hang out at torture temple for a thousand years or so' fog
propaGANDA please vote for Faramir "Namesake of the Faramir we know" son of Ondoher he's got it all. Younger brother, couldn't stay behind while his family fought Mordor, rode out in disguise (sound familiar?) but died TRAGICALLY in the arms of the proto-Rohirric Commander. this is not even touching all the stuff he gets into in adaptations. Faramir I supremacy
OK no I can wax poetical on Faramir I Son of Ondoher because his is a tragedy that sets in motion the end of the Kings of Gondor (for an age or two. idk on specific but). Faramir I second son of Ondoher is not content to stay at home, doing his duty, following orders etc. etc. because he LOVES his dad and his big brother SO much. And the thing is, he really really shouldn't go. Hindsight 20/20 and all that but if he leaves there is NO ONE who can take the throne from his dad's direct line (because the Gondorian Council are punks and decide his cool sister Firiel and her extremely cool husband Arvedui can't have it on account of [handwaves] honestly). But the armies they're facing off against are serious business! They're really outmatching Gondor here. They straight up already fought his grandfather King Calimehtar, iand are back for round 2. So what does precious Faramir (I) do? He pulls the OG Eowyn, babey (and let's not forget parallels, PARALLELS about following your father (figure) and brother to war, right? she marries the NAMESAKE of this guy, incredibly cool mirroring here) and gets a disguise and rides with the Rohirrim-before-Eorl (some adaptations call this the Eotheod) to go help. Here's where things get EXTRA angsty HIS FATHER AND BROTHER ARE DEAD. He doesn't know because he's with the Eotheod, but like. The Wainriders killed them. And the Eotheod does help rout the rest of them and eventually, Earnil II future Throne-thief (but it's not his fault) gets the final victory BUT not before sweet noble Faramir is run through with a spear by the chieftain of the Wainriders and DIES IN THE ARMS OF A COMMANDER OF THE EOTHEOD. Like. That's a specific detail we have. Blorbo Blorbamir at LEAST didn't die alone and was discovered to be the prince there. So. Mr. Horse Leader gets to give the news to everyone about the poor guy that died in his arms being the son of the king. But oops! The King and brother are already dead so. Technically the King of Gondor died in his arms. What a day for him, right? Anyway this is still about Faramir who (in the LoTRO adaptation) feels such guilt that he HANGS AROUND AS A GHOST REGRETTING HIS CONTRIBUTION TO THE DOWNFALL OF GONDOR. Tragicest blorbo. Regret. Precious guy. Vote Faramir I

I’ve really just now entered Enedwaith and the Grey Company’s quests but I can already say that Wulfwryn would die for any of these rangers ;—; I think this is the first time she’s really felt at home among a group of people since she left her post in the city guard of Minas Tirith.
I touched before on how Wulfwryn isn’t really driven by the grand Saving Middle Earth kind of virtue, she’s painfully loyal to her true king (Aragorn) which leads her into lotro’s story and in a way she’s now among a group of people pursuing the same. And especially after how agonizingly alone she was in Mirkwood with Raenor healing from Moria (he’s now back with her), that she latches into that group feeling.
*nervous laughter in knows this can’t last forever*

Hey Semi it's me from some time ago when I still was quite lost after downloading lotro and didn't even know how to fight and you helped me 😁 now I've leveled up quite a bit, went to Rivendell and basically everywhere in the north except angmar and even a bit into Eregion and the misty mountains (even though I keep dying because this is way out of my current skills) and every day I'm falling more in love with the game 🥺 I am so so grateful for you introducing the game to me and literally giving me the gift that is lotro 🥰 and there are so many rangers all over middle earth! I love it!!! They are my absolute favourite and if I could be adopted by them I absolutely would🥰 Aaaaahhh!
Oh my god I am so sorry I did not see the post with your proper nickname 😭 in your header I still saw the old one and assumed tumblr would not lie to me like this. I did not intend any kind of harm, so feel free to delete my other ask with your old name 😬
hellooo! that's absolutely ok, don't worry about it!
oh WOW you have made some strides in just a few weeks?!!!! that's amazing omg! I'm SO happy you're enjoying it so much, and you are most welcome! Eregion is one of my absolute favourite areas 🥺 fgdfhjdf MOOD i've literally been riding through Gondor whilst being 20-30 levels too low just for fun hhahahah (and dying terribly)
and yes there are SO many rangers godddddddd <3 you'll be wanting to do the adopting soon enough hehehehe
but gosh it warms my heart to hear you're having such a blast! <3

LOTRO ask game!
(I’m going to do both 38 and 39 because I have A LOT of opinions on the soundtrack, you have been warned.)
1 - How did you first get into LotRO? Do you remember when you started playing?
Aw man, I remember I started playing in the summer of 2014 when I’d just turned 13 and had no idea how MMOs worked but loved Tolkien to bits. I don’t remember exactly how I found out about LOTRO, but I’m pretty sure it’s just the fact that I like games and I like Tolkien that led me to it by chance on an internet search. My first character was a Burglar? A Hunter? Named Bronvien who never made it out alive from the server closures in Snowbourn. I’ve kept her there since out of posterity and remembrance, but maybe I’ll transfer her to Crickhollow or Landroval when transfers are open again, or remake her entirely.
10 - Do you have any favorite reputation faction(s)?
Anything Rangers-related has my heart, they’ve been there since the beginning and continue to be a huge part of the game, so I make it a point to get to max rep with them whenever I can. A few other factions that are especially memorable to me the most are the Riders of Stangard, Men of Dunland, the Wilderfolk and the Grey Mountains Expedition!
30 - Do you take a lot of screenshots? (have any to show off?)
Absolutely, have these from some of my favourite outfit photoshoots! (Also going to shamelessly plug my outfit blog that’s going to be updated with new outfits very soon!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
38 - Do you have any favorite soundtracks from around the game?
Buckle up kiddos, y’all are about to hear some OPINIONS.
First off, I need to write a disclaimer, because absolutely nothing will ever top the Riders of Rohan and Helm’s Deep soundtrack for me, so anything from those two expansions are immediately off the table, but I’m still going share one favourite track from each of those regardless so you know where I’m coming from.
So to start, here are my two favourite tracks from Riders of Rohan and Helm’s Deep:
Riders of Rohan - Roaming Free I feel like if I had to pick one track that encapsulates Rohan, this is THE track. The chorus!!! The strings!!! I love everything about this so much and this reason I spend so much time in Rohan, even at level cap.
Helm’s Deep - Across the Divide On the other end of the spectrum, we have something more somber and foreboding. This one just tugs at my heart strings so much, and knowing what’s about to go down in Helm’s Deep makes it all the more oh-so-deliciously-tragic.
Anyway, there’s a lot of tracks that I love, but since so many of them are pretty well-known and beloved (like this dreamy track from Evendim), I’m going to talk about the tracks that I always stop to listen to and don’t think get enough attention:
Siege of Mirkwood - Gathbúrz A lowkey number that is only played in very specific parts of Southern Mirkwood. A hauntingly beautiful and dark track that ebbs and flows and keeps you on your toes as you approach Dol Guldur. I can listen to this one for days. I once accidentally put this on my phone speaker during class but it was so quiet and understated I didn’t notice it for a good half an hour.
Rise of Isengard - Nan Curunír variation Such a strong and memorable piece! The moment the trumpet and drums came in, I was hooked. It’s mysterious and menacing, but at the same time very grounded. It lets you know that it’s there and doesn’t shy away from being bold without being obnoxious.
Minas Morgul - The Sons of Isildur A gentle but powerful track that really captures the former glory of the Kings of Gondor. It’s been quite a while since we’ve had something so soft but so regal. This one’s not in a hurry, and carries with it a certain weight and grandiose amplified by the soft drums in the background. I have a lot of feelings about Minas Morgul and it shows.
Where Dragons Dwell - Memories of Tharrazhâr I don’t think I’ve heard a more beautiful track since Riders of Rohan, Bill Champagne really hit it out of the park with this one. There’s hope and desperation in equal measure in this track, it’s a whole journey rolled into five minutes and forty-two seconds. I remember playing through the expansion back in April 2020 in the middle of the pandemic and just being awed by the music and how well it fit Ered Mithrin and the writing.
And now with some honourable mentions:
Riders of Rohan - LOTRO Legacy This one holds so many memories for me, it was the menu music when I first started playing. It used to catch me off guard with how LOUD it was but now that it’s gone, I miss it dearly whenever I’m not running around in the Gap of Rohan.
Mines of Moria - We Cannot Get Out Whenever I get tired of Moria, this one picks me right back up. This one’s like a gulp of fresh air and a glass of cold water when you’ve been underground for way too long.
Shadows of Angmar - Prancing Pony variation A delightful little jig that warms my heart, this is the one I keep in my Breeland houses.
39 - Are there any soundtracks you particularly dislike?
All of the following should not be taken as seriously as my “soundtracks that I like” essay review. I’ve had plenty of “girl why do you hate fun” discussions about the game with my best friend of 13 years and counting who also plays LOTRO, in which the soundtrack was brought up plenty of times. There may be some hot takes.
Shadows of Angmar - The Dunedain I actually like this track a lot, but the thing is this only plays in short bursts in so many “save the Rangers” and “fight by the Rangers” instances that it’s left somewhat of a bad taste in my mouth. It’s like only having the smallest crumb from the crust of your favourite pie. I LIKE this track. A LOT. But it’s just never played in full enough for me to appreciate it while playing the game, so I ended up listening to it outside of the game. No, seriously, I have it saved in my music folder so I can listen to it offline.
Pretty much everything that plays in Gondor EXCEPT THIS BELFALAS TRACK To me, every single track (except that one track) in Gondor feels...garish, gaudy, and intrusive. Everything is just too much and over-elaborate for me to enjoy. I’m also willing to give this Dol Amroth track a pass, but it’s on thin ice.
Shadows of Angmar - War Pipes I liked this track, until I didn’t. Incidentally, I also hate doing the Trouble in Tuckborough instance because I keep getting turned around in the dark in the godawful urban planning of The Shire. It’s not very fun trying to find your way around Tuckborough in the dark with bagpipes blasting in your ears. If it weren’t for Trouble in Tuckborough, I’d like this track more.
Elf music in general, unless there’s harps A very controversial take, but I can’t stand the cacophony of high-pitched flutes and vocals and shrill strings. I do enjoy the tracks where the harp is the dominant instrument though, like this one. I think it’s the amount of back and forth with Elrond in Volume 1 of the Epic that’s worn out Elf music for me.

Faenaeglos can’t reverently study the crest of his Dunedain bloodline thanks to his blindness, and fears to touch it less he wear it down even moreso. Sometimes he brings a sighted friend to describe it to him in great detail, down to every crack. And sometimes just knowing he’s in the presence of an important relic is enough, or so he likes to tell himself.

10, 32, and 38?
10. Do you have any favorite reputation faction(s)?
GREY COMPANY :D Also the Wardens of Annuminas (that was the first Kindred I ever got on Sae Prime actually, iirc!) and Rangers of Ithilien and the factions for Dol Amroth/Minas Tirith (tied)
32. Has your opinion on certain regions or quests changed over time?
I originally was Not a fan of Moria but going through it on a couple other alts made me realize it was because when I first did it on Sae Prime it was because I didn't have the expac so it was Epic Only which got slightly tedious. Also I used to hate the Trollshaws so much because it was real hard to tell where things like cliffs/hills etc were via the map so I got lost a lot. (Slowly getting better at Navigating it now, though!)
I'm not quite sure on the quests tho, I mean I know there are Some but I just. can't think of them rn for the life of me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
38. Do you have any favorite soundtracks from around the game?
oh you BET i do!!!!! my top five of absolute all time favorites are as follows (and even then it was hard to narrow down):
1) shadows of the argonath [chef's kiss, absolutely magnificent and majestic, many much gondor thoughts, many much feelings, i think this one might be the All Time Favorite]
 2) the sons of isildur. [something about it just hits different, in a good way yk? also there are callbacks to it during 'the wanderer's confession' track which. many pain, much genius use of music.]
3) heart of a hero [i really like the picture chance thomas paints using the music.]
4) the lines of earendil [i vibe real hard with the vocals; and it does such a good job at combining the sort of ‘aragorn’s coronation-type theme/gondor music’ with the more ethereal, light music of the elves/arwen’s theme the same way that aragorn & arwen are uniting and IT’S GOOD. you can also hear quite a bit of other midsummer music in it which is fun!]
5) the cape of belfalas [it’s good and fits real well with the area & story theme it goes with]
the lotro rohan theme would be a lot higher on the list if i wasn’t so frustrated trying to find sheet music for it >:( i wanna play it on my violin SO bad, it’s SO pretty

The Maythorns strike me as the kind of parents who are so supportive of their brave son and his super important job and have custom-commissioned little Ranger figurines on their mantelpiece and hunted down some other Ranger that Thorn had worked with for a description of some deed or other of his so they could commission a painting of him to hang in their living room (said Ranger made up some exaggerated poppycock and as a result Thorn hates the painting and hides it every time he goes to visit), which is a very funny concept considering the fact that they apparently live in Bree.

for the LOTRO ranger bingo, may i humbly request an amdír? also if you're feeling like it, my oc ranger girl fíriel 🥺💚
ooooh the first of the Rangers With The Worst Fates you meet :( really did a good job of setting expectations for how the game will treat rangers 😭I was very attached to him and, being a naive new player who didn't know How Things Work Here I was still hoping I could save him :( yeah :((((
Tumblr media
I still have Eth visit his grave (or the place I decided he was buried, as the devs never gave him one) from time to time. y'know just to chat about her adventures thus far. anyway I'm still not over him.
our favorite Everyone Lives AU is nice tho :) nothing irreparably horrible happens to the bree-land rangers in that one! :D
and your girl Fíriel!! I always somehow misread her name as "Feral" so I had to check that box lol. she really saw this guy Doomed by the Narrative and was like "oh cool that's my brother now". Tossdir can relate. also is she ok I love her but is she ok???

Obscure Tolkien Blorbo: Round 1
Nuin vs Faramir (son of Ondoher)
Nuin:
A Dark Elf in the Book of Lost Tales.
He’s an elf who found the first men asleep before the sun rose! He accidentally woke them up and took responsibility and taught them how to talk and how the world works. They call him the Father of Speech, in the very early draft he inhabits. Still canon in my heart, you go you random Avar.
Faramir (son of Ondoher):
The younger son of King Ondoher of Gondor, killed in battle along with his father and older brother. Also a character in Lord of the Rings Online.
