I have once again installed LOTRO, and am wanting to make a new character, but am conflicted about the class...
I want to make a rider or Rohan, but am torn between Captain and Champion... Any thoughts?
Hm, or maybe warden...? hm....

When I was divvying up the LotRO main quest among my various alts, I assembled the Moria gang sort of on accident. At first it was just Hathellang, and then Drof got added in because although I'm not entirely sure what her Deal is yet I do know that connection with various tribes of Dwarves is a big part of it. Dahlia was originally meant to be doing the Bingo Boffin questline, but I wasn't getting a story out of that and I thought she might get involved with the Moria questline on her way through, and then she kind of fully detached herself from the Bingo Boffin stuff (which I've decided I'd rather do with a non-hobbit). Then I imagined the three of them in the second hall, and something was missing, and Belharen got added in, and something else was missing, and Ferelin popped into existence (and became the Main Character), and for a while things were good, and then Hithanneth entered the scene (gaining the honorary title of "member of the Moria Gang, despite not actually joining the party until the plot had already taken them to Mirkwood and only setting foot in Moria once).
Anyhow, one day I suddenly realized I had a perfect six, the size of a fellowship; further investigation led me to the realization that I had also inadvertently created quite a balanced team with their classes. A Burglar, a Guardian, a Brawler (Dahlia was originally a Hunter but as soon as the Brawler class was released and I talked to some people about how it played I knew immediately that I'd completely mis-classed her), a Beorning, a Minstrel, and a Warden collectively have quite a good balance of heals, DPS, and tanking that any good fellowship wants (instead of filling it up with all captains and one hunter, like some fellowships I've been part of.)
Anyway, that was a fun realization and contributed to Themes and Things (these being the primary characters that will play a role in Song of Ferelin), but the problem lies in this: While the Moria Gang has all this Balance and the perfect six, Team Grey Company has only five; Léonys the Hunter, Lamegil the Rune-keeper, Pegweneth the Lore-master, Gribli the Champion, and Theorgir the Warden. Which is Fine, Probably, but I want my symmetry to be symmetrical, dammit!
Seriously thinking of fleshing out that idea I had about a Guaredain deserter who gets involved with the epic quest and seeing if she fits in there at all.

I'm downloading lotro to give it a whirl. Any advice on what character classes & areas are good for first time players?
HECK YESSSSSS
I'd definitely give it a google!!! there's some really good resources on the lotro wiki and advice on the lotro forum! off the top of my head, guardian and hunter and champion are pretty easy I think and good for solo adventuring 🥰
i highly advise doing the shire once you've finished the intro of the epic quest!! it's just very cute and laid back 🥹 then disabling your xp and doing ered luin and bree-land! (bree-land levels you up a bit more than the others because it also has the old forest and the barrow downs etc. and personally i prefer zooming through ered luin at a slightly higher level.) each of these three areas has its own epic prologue, and they all lead to the same place in the epic storyline, so you can do one or all of them - it doesn't matter 🥰
you can also search for lotro area maps by level! it'll show you which areas you should do depending on your level ☺️

Lord of rings online quests archet

#Lord of rings online quests archet plus#
Barter them for a Novice Mark and morale/power potion. It’s a quest that you’ll turn in to Constable Thistlewool you’ll get barter tokens as a reward. Open it and right click “ A message of thanks“. ►After you finish the Prologue, turn in the quest at John Brackenbrook, take a blue box from mail behind you. NOTE: You’ll see that some names of places are in “ Bold“, to see where they are exactly, look at the section below called “Ered Luin – Points of interest” Yellow line Champion is my favourite starting class, but Hunter and Beornings are good picks as well. * – The Minstrel DPS got nerfed substantially. The third skill is greyed out because it can only be used when you get 3 stacks of ballads which you get by using a ballad skill on your enemy. This is a list of skills that you should spam all the time: You should pick Red line (middle) specialization because it gives skills that can one shot your enemies. Don’t worry about getting yourself killed because it’s practically impossible for minstrel to die at low levels ( unless you commit a suicide by jumping off a cliff…) So I advise you to start out with Minstrel. This light armoured little fellow may seem weak, but from lvl 5 he can practically one shot most of the enemies. So after trying out numerous classes, mostly Champion and Rune-Keeper the class with fastest clearing time is Minstrel. If you pick a dwarf as starting race, you get 5 more TP, because you will also finish the racial deed ‘Enmity of the goblins’ while working your way through the Ered Luin deeds. You can also start as a Dwarf for additional TP but for a cost of time, thanks to oreyos for pointing this out: The only quests you need to do are the Prologue ones, don’t accept the secondary. The shortest time I have achieved was with Men. The only difference is the time needed to finish the Prologue. What’s so important about picking the right race for this guide you might ask.
#Lord of rings online quests archet plus#
Not really fun and enjoyable thing to do ✖īefore you start doing this guide, I reccommend searching for a Lotro Starter Pack giveawaybecause it has a slayer and skill deed boost which will help you a lot, plus it’s account wide. You get a nice amount of Turbine Points (around 200 TP) ✔.Not much time consuming (1 hour and 30 mins approx.) ✔.Relatively easy to do once you get a hang of it ✔.Now the pros and cons of the grinding run: So I decided to create an ultimate farming guide for all of new folk who can’t enjoy the game to it’s fullest because they don’t have zones unlocked. I have been playing The Lord of the Rings Online as a free-player since 2009.

The Couple Hours when Champs Ruled Them All
Soooo was anyone else around in early June of last year (2020)? Did you happen to remember the almost legendarily ridiculous Champion bug that had INSANE exploit potential?  Honestly I do not remember the context around how I heard of it, but I did spot a forum thread demanding, “Take the game down immediately” and clicked on it for shits and giggles.  It was not what I was expecting.
Tumblr media
In case Tumblr decides to be stupid and squish the crap out of that screenshot, the jist is the following. On June 3rd, an update which included a tweak to Champions caused the skill “Champion’s Challenge” to incorrectly interact with an LI Legacy, specifically “Fight On Critical Rating”. Champion’s Challenge is meant to reduce the target’s outgoing damage along with briefly force-taunting. Instead, it was increasing the target’s outgoing damage, based on the legacy’s rating x 100, then - 30.. which maxed out at +859970% increased damage. G O D D A M N.   But since it buffed the target, you might ask, how could it be exploited? Well.. one, damage reflecting skills. Two, sparring another player, who could then take that insane buff and go ape-shit with it. Normally the effect only lasts for 5 seconds, but there were reports that the “debuff” was also bugged enough to be permanent until death/defeat, and that someone could very easily take this into an instance and one-shot everything, “including T5 Remmorchant” which was the latest raid at that point.  I have a champion, but he is parked at level 50 with an XP disabler for SoA instance funtimes, which means no LIs for him, which means I could not replicate this. Buuut thankfully someone provided a screenshot.
Tumblr media
*snort* ohmygod. Meanwhile here’s my Burn Hot with its measly +74.8% damage.
Tumblr media
I am really not sure how this got past beta testing (if there even was any...) but to their credit, this was temporarily disabled / hotfixed within a few hours of the forum post. I am not sure if anyone actually managed to use this to any nefarious intent, but personally I found this to be hilarious.  FEAR THE ALMIGHTY CHAMPIONS. Here’s a link to the thread my screenshots are from if you are curious: https://www.lotro.com/forums/showthread.php?680590-Take-the-game-down-immediately

Hello! Saw you play lotro and am dying to know what your favorite regions are (and what races and classes you play, but I don't want to ask Too Many Questions)
OHHH it's so tricky I love so many of them mmmm WELL I love the Iron Hills so very much, the environment is lovely and the continuation of Dale's refugee storyline makes me so happy, I love Moria actually it's so right it FEELS so correct for Moria it's so big and you get lost so easily love it, um... man I loved the Morgul Vale again it just felt so epic to quest in and I really enjoyed like working my way up Minas Morgul methodically um... I MEAN EASTERN GONDOR OBVIOUSLY they really went all in for Denethor vindication and couldn't love Jayax more, I actually really loved Mordor too in that like... I hated being there which feels very right for Mordor and of COURSE it introduced my favourite character Ayorzen AND my favourite dynamic of Ranger of Ithilien and Ranger of Arnor boyfriends who reluctantly adopt a goblin. FOROCHEL, beautiful place.... I really love so many areas ;v;
As for what I play, I think I have? Almost every race and class as alts? I don't have Brawler obviously or runekeeper cus I tried it and I wasn't inspired. My main is a high elf champion with my side main as a gondorian guardian then my side SIDE main as a rohir hunter but I've played most classes to lvl 50 I think? I'm on the Laurelin server :)

A BlueCross Oneshot
Warning: I'm obsessed with LOTRO so this entire oneshot is based off of it-
—————
Cross was resting against his large, two handed blade, glancing at the corpses of the perished mobs around him. They were all below his level, so they were fairly easy kills, plus the drops weren't that great. But, at least he finished that quest. He checked his health and scowled, before opening his inventory and taking one of the smaller healing potions. As the odd tasting liquid slid down his throat, he felt his health rise again. He then checked his deed log, groaning again.
New Deed: Goblin Slayer - Kill 30 Bleary Goblins (1/30)
New Deed: Force of Will - Use the skill Force of Will 1500 times (4/1500)
Cross had had enough of all of the stupid quests and the stupid deeds and whatnot. They had no real purpose, other than getting special currency for the special merchant stands and boosted REP with the other civilians. It was so tiring to do, but necessary to level up and continue on throughout the world.
Cross suddenly perked up as he heard a cry from across the forest. He quickly picked up his blade and rushed towards the source of the cry, dodging the trees in his path. When he stopped, he found a younger looking skeleton, adorning a short blue dyed cape. On his back was a lute, and he was holding a cowbell. Three goblins surrounded him as he shook the cowbell, reaching for his lute. Cross, without thinking, rushed forward and started attacking the goblins. He heard a shout of displeasure from the other skeleton as he used the skill Force of Will, killing them instantly.
"Hey! What the heck! You just took my kills!" Cross turned to the shorter skeleton who was now glaring at him angrily, still holding onto his cowbell. Cross simply stared at him in surprise before answering. "I heard you cry out. I came to help you."
"Uh, hello?! Ever heard of a battle cry?! That was one of my three cries I use, it was an attack I have!" Cross simply blinked in surprise before turning away. The new skeleton just huffed before speaking again. "Look, I'm working on a deed right now called 'Goblin Slayer'. To make up for stealing my kills, you should partner up with me and help me complete it. I have four so far."
Cross blinked in surprise again. "Hey, would you look at that, I'm working on that deed too. And after killing those three, I have four killed as well."
The skeleton perked up. "Awesome! Then let's form a Fellowship and get Goblin hunting! Oh, uh, what's your name?"
"Cross." The other skeleton nodded and sent the Fellowship request over. "My name is Blue. I'm a Skeleton Race Bard Class, and I specialize in Scholarship, Weaponsmithing, and Farming, making me a Historian Vocation. What about you?"
"Oh, uh, I'm a Warrior class right now, but I'm thinking about upgrading to a Champion class so I can wield two smaller blades instead of this large one. I'm an Armourer, meaning I'm a Metalsmith, a Prospector, and a Tailor. I was actually hoping to find some rare metals out here to make some new armor."
Blue nodded excitedly. "I can't wear the heavy armor, it's not compatible with my class. But I haven't met any tailors that could make me any armor. But here you are! I'll make you a deal. You help me out and make some really good armor for me, and I'll make your new twin daggers. What'd you say?"
Cross thought for a moment before nodding. Blue jumped up in excitement and shook his cowbell in the air happily. Cross chuckled as he hit the accept button, creating a Fellowship between the two.
"Now, we should probably get out of this area so any mobs that spawn don't try to attack us." Blue said, placing his hands on his hips, placing his cowbell back on the loop of his belt. Cross nodded and followed the shorter skeleton through the eerie woods. They kept walking until Blue suddenly placed his arm out. Cross was about to ask what was wrong before Blue muttered quietly. "Jackpot.."
Cross looked up to see they were standing outside the goblin ruins. There were two towers that stood high up in the air, crumbling, like simply touching it would cause then to collapse. There were also crumbling walls surrounding the two towers. The goblins had made this their home, and there were currently two standing outside as guards.
Blue started talking in a hushed voice. "Okay, that place is likely filled with goblins. There's two kinds that I know of, and that's the axe throwing goblins and the close range dagger fighting goblins. Think you can distract the ones with the daggers while I attack from afar?"
Cross nodded as they slipped silently through the trees. They slipped through the cracks in the ruins, passing the guards completely unnoticed, before attacking with full force. Cross lunges forward with his large blade, attacking the two goblins that stood near the fire. Blue leaped onto a broken pillar and started playing his lute, playing a minor chord, and then a major chord. He then played a combination of the two, adding a total of three music buffs onto him. Because of the buffs, his special attack was unlocked, allowing him to play a few notes that attacked all of the goblins within range with a powerful attack, as well as heal both him and Cross.
Cross finished them off using the Force of Will skill, slicing through them with ease. They had also managed to kill off the guards that came running in as well. Blue hopped down and started progressing through the ruins, Cross close behind.
There was quite the number of goblins in the ruins. But they had little difficulty, with Cross's powerful blows and Blue's buffs and heals from his lute and bell, they managed just fine. Eventually, they made it to the end of the ruins and stood in the last empty corridor that lead to the last dimly lit room.
"Well, we've almost cleared out these goblin ruins, and I'm sure we're almost done with the deed now!" Blue smiled eagerly. Cross nodded. "I only need one more." "Me too!"
Blue played a quiet chord on his lute once more, fully healing the two of them. He then readied his instruments and stared eagerly at the last room. "Well, let's head in!"
The two walked into the dimly lit room, a sudden chill washing over the two of them. Blue shivered as his short, blue cape blew slightly.
"Foolish..."
Both of them suddenly flinched at the sudden voice. It was raspy and high pitched, and reminded Cross of an annoying five year old that had been screaming for too long. Suddenly, the old torches in the room burst into flames, casting ghostly shadows throughout the collapsing rubble. From behind a pillar came a large goblin, much larger than any of the other goblins they had faced. Cross quickly checked the info for the new monster before faltering and stepping back. Blue quickly turned to him, only to find Cross wide eyed and shaking slightly.
"T-that's.. that's a signature.. so not only is it fifteen levels above me, but it's also way stronger than me!" Cross shook as he spoke, backing up against the crumbling walls. Blue quickly faced forward again, only to nimbly leap out of the way of the large club coming in his direction. He quickly used the target lock skill to check the enemy, and sure enough, it was a signature at level 45.
"What the hell?! Why is a level 45 signature in a level twenty area?!" Blue yelled as he leaped back again, ringing his cowbell quickly. It was smaller and easier to move around with, despite it being weaker compared to his lute. "I don't know! But the exit is blocked!" Blue leaped again. "Damnit! Well we'll have to fight it if we want to get out, so get your ass over here and help fight instead of shaking on the wall! It's a game Cross, you'll respawn if you die! FUCK-" Blue yelped as the Goblin King smacked him, causing him to crash into one of the crumbling walls.
Cross stood still, frozen, as the goblin rose his club into the air again. Blue's health had dropped immensely with that single hit, and he was currently stunned, so he was unable to heal himself. Not that it mattered, because even his largest healing spell couldn't fully heal him, and the next blow would be sure to kill him.
Cross quickly focused on Blue once more and faltered as he smiled weakly at him. Seeing this, Cross became enraged as his eyes flared, purple and red light filling up the room. He rushed forward and sliced the Goblin King, landing a critical hit. Because of this, the goblin turned around and faced Cross with a creepy smile. Cross faltered and took a step back, staring up at the beast's gleaming eyes. He wouldn't be fast enough to be able to dodge any of the attacks because of the class he chose, so he knew he was done for. He was about to close his eyes and brace for the impact when a flash of blue rushed in front of him and grabbed him before everything went black.
—————
When Cross could see again, he was surprised to see they were standing next to a large stone lantern in the center of one of the Elven Skeleton villages. He frantically looked around for Blue but his efforts were fruitless. Though, they were still in a Fellowship, and Blue's health was fully restored, as well as his own. Cross sighed as he quickly changed his settings so that he could only see the health bar of the people in his Fellowship before scanning the crowds. It seemed pointless until Cross sported a green bar located near the crafting center. He grinned before shoving his way through the crowded village, startling some of the townsfolk and earning him some glares. He didn't care however, he needed to know what happened.
When he reached the crafting area, he found Blue hunched over one of the forges. Cross was about to reach out to him when Blue's hand shot up.
"Wait your turn asshole, these daggers are more important than your probably novice level bronze sword you're about to make."
Cross scoffed but grinned as he realized Blue was fully focused on his craft and didn't notice that it was Cross that approached. Smiling, he walked away and went to one of the looms in the next sector. He grinned as he opened up his crafting menu and selected the hardest but most beneficial tunic and trousers to create. They required a lot of materials, and Cross would probably have to go grinding for more materials later on, but it was worth it.
He took out his tailoring materials and began to work, ignoring everything else around him, as he practically poured his soul into his work. When he finished, he beamed at his creations. Not only did he manage to get enough materials to make a hat and gloves and boots as well, but every article was a critical success, making them even stronger. He scooped up the items and placed them neatly in his satchel before standing up and making his way over to the forges again.
When he arrived, he saw Blue packing up his tools with an annoyed expression on his face. Behind him were three different players, all berating him for taking too long. Blue looked about ready to snap, so Cross quickly stepped in front of Blue and held his arm out, getting in the way of the three other players. Cross observed the three characters, one had a golden tooth, one had wrappings around his skull, and the last one had a torn, red bandana. Shaking his head slightly, Cross glared at the three. They simply glared back until Cross spoke.
"I suggest you bug off. You all are only level seven, meaning you all likely just got off the beginners prologue quest. I, along with this fellow over here, am level thirty. Now, leave us be. Unless of course you'd all like to challenge us to a PvP."
The other skeletons backed off carefully before turning and sprinting away. Cross turned back to Blue, only to find his annoyed expression still present.
"You took my kills. Again." Cross only chuckled as Blue huffed in displeasure. He then opened his satchel and took out the armor he created for Blue, handing them to him.
"This includes a tunic, trousers, boots, gloves, and a hat. I wanted to make you a better cape as well, but I ran out of materials." Blue smiled eagerly as he began equipping the new gear, stars in his eyes. When he finished and closed the character tab, he handed the two twin daggers that were sitting on the anvil to Cross, who took them rather eagerly himself.
"Those are made out of some of the strongest metal you can find in this area. Plus, it has added buffs, so your movement speed should increase, as well as the critical rate." Grinning, Cross quickly changed his class and equipped the new blades. Suddenly, Cross looked up again.
"Wait, how did we get back here anyway? Did we die?" Blue simply shook his head. "Nope! While you were distracting the goblin, I used the skill 'Milestone' to take me back here. And at the last second, I took hold of you, so you came back as well. But, uh, that kinda breaks the game's systems, so you were out for a while."
Cross nodded. "Wait, what happened to that Goblin King then?!" Blue smiled cheekily. "Well, another group of higher level characters came by to kill it, but since we initiated the fight, we got the kill! But, uh, now we have to complete 'Goblin Slayer: Advanced'. And we gotta kill sixty of em now."
Cross simply grinned as he took Blue's hand. "Well, what do you know, I feel like taking these things for a swing. You with me?" Blue grinned before readying his hat. "Sure thing.."
"Partner..."

Calling All LOTR fans! Why aren’t you on LOTRO yet??
Hey everyone! It’s Molly here - aka, Sauron’s #1 fan lmao.
Now, we’re a big fandom, between LOTR and the Hobbit and the Silm, there’s millions of us out there, and thousands on Tumblr! And we’re always looking for new ways to experience and interact with Tolkien’s legendarium. Plus, many of us have an overlapping interest in gaming, of any sort. But even if you don’t - read on, I implore you!
There’s an incredibly awesome free MMORPG out there, one that I’ve been playing for years. It’s called LOTRO - Lord of the Rings Online - and it’s gotta be my absolute favorite interpretation of Middle-Earth ever.
Tumblr media
For those not aware, an MMORPG is a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game, basically an open world PC game that has thousands of other users you can interact with within the confines of the game’s universe. And in this case, that’s Middle-Earth!
Everything you know and love about Tolkien’s world is brought to life in stunning thoughtful detail, from the rolling hills of the Shire to the eaves of Fangorn and beyond. You become an integral part of the story of Middle-Earth, assisting the Fellowship both directly and in the littler ways that count most of all - staving off the forces of darkness by doing good deeds and helping the folk of Eriador, Rhovanion, and Gondor. Everything you do ripples outwards to influence the fate of Arda itself! Without you, there would be no hope for the Fellowship to succeed in its dire quest. Traveling from land to land, you become beloved and treasured as a hero by all the free peoples of Middle-Earth, royal and common folk alike. While you may start out small, soon your path will bring you to the feet of great lords and kings, and onto the very doorstep of Mordor itself, where the Dark Lord awaits. Fight the fell beasts of Sauron, skip through the Old Forest with Tom Bombadil, and ride your warsteed across the vast open plains of Rohan - the world is yours to explore, and to save, if you can. Middle-Earth depends on you.
Tumblr media
I truly can’t overstate how much I love LOTRO. I’ve been playing for five years now and I am just as much in love with it as the day I first started. It’s always a little dicey, as a Tolkien fan, especially if you’re a highly devoted one, trying to judge and decide if an interpretation of his work will enhance your experience or ruin it - you just want to see justice done by him and everything he stood for. Trust me, I’m like that too (there’s no need to talk about a certain upcoming Amazon series...). So believe me when I tell you that the spirit of Tolkien comes alive in this game. The creators, writers, and designers of LOTRO have put so much thought and care, and heart, into staying true to Tolkien’s vision and messages. Great attention and care is paid with respect to accuracy to the lore and languages Tolkien created as well, something that cements the authenticity of LOTRO for diehard fans. You just feel good playing it (and honestly, I feel like it’s helped my self-esteem?? Those little virtual hobbits are so grateful for everything you do). Warm fuzzies all around. With a fair helping of angst, can’t forget that. Not all stories can have happy endings, but with your help, a whole lot of them can.
Tumblr media
So... maybe you’ve read this far, and are a teensy bit interested? Or at least intrigued. This is a chance to expand the world of Tolkien to something you can actually immerse yourself in, be a part of, explore like never before! Wander the cobblestone streets of Bree, smell the pipe-smoke in the Prancing Pony, feel the chill winds of the icy wastes of Forochel upon your face. Do you have the guts to face the Witch-King himself?
LOTRO has so much to offer! Whether you are interested from a gaming perspective, or a story perspective, it’s endless fun. Before LOTRO I’d never played an MMO, and I certainly would not consider myself a gamer. I came from a love of Middle-Earth, and came for a chance to see that story brought to life. So don’t count it out if you think you’re not up for some hardcore gaming lifestyle - this game has the pace that you set for it. Whether you join a social kinship and roleplay, a raid group to do skirmishes, or go it alone and fish the day away, the possibilities are endless.
Tumblr media
Plus, I feel like it’s worth stating that the scenery in LOTRO is astoundingly beautiful. It’s not uncommon for my friends and I to ride around just for the view. And you know what else? The music, guys. Just, the music. LOTRO has been blessed these many years with composer Chance Thomas, who has crafted some of the best soundtracks I’ve ever heard - comparable to those of the Lord of the Rings films themselves. He truly encapsulates the emotions, the grandeur, the coziness, the uneasiness, the dread and the joy, of every corner of Middle-Earth. (It’s so well-loved by players that TWO official soundtracks were even put out, and I play them in my car all the time, ngl. Check out one of the Rohan tracks here!)
Tumblr media
So, for the nitty gritty that you may be wondering about! This is a great time to join LOTRO. Over the years, the game has grown tremendously, adding more regions of Middle-Earth to quest in, building more storylines, and expanding the characters you can have, the clothes you can wear, and the activities you can do! Currently, you can play several races - Man, Dwarf, Elf, High Elf, Hobbit, and Beorning - as well as a wide variety of classes - hunter, lore-master, rune-keeper, burglar, champion, minstrel, captain, guardian, and warden- each with their own unique stories and abilities. Multiple characters can be created for free on one account. There’s a wide customization capability for characters and cosmetic items, for housing, steeds, emotes, pets, and more. That’s part of what makes LOTRO so fun! Most expansions can be purchased in-game using points earned by completing deeds, making LOTRO affordable and FTP (free to play) for a large proportion of its content. Additionally, we have an incredibly thorough and comprehensive Wiki-style website for all LOTRO-related information. This is an incredibly knowledgeable and welcoming community.
...Did I add that there’s maiar in the game too? If you have a keen eye you’ll spot them.
Tumblr media
Molly why are really you making this post?
Now, earlier I mentioned kinships. Traveling Middle-Earth can often be more fun with others, and having friends can help you learn the game and offer advice and insight. They can be roleplay partners, band members (yes, you can play instruments in the game!), or just buddies to talk to. Many LOTRO players are in kinships, and each is different, depending on what you want to get out of the experience. You can find a kinship within the game, or on social media - in fact, I found my kinship, the one I’ve been in all these years, right here on Tumblr! I want to extend that hand in friendship to potential new players that are in the position I was all those years ago.
Our humble kinship is called Dwarrowdam. You may recall this is the name for a lady-dwarf! While many of our members are dwarrowdams, that is by no means a prerequisite. We welcome players of all races and classes. Dwarrowdam is a casual social kinship, where we enjoy helping others out, from learning the ropes to festival activities, deeding, raids, concerts, and much more. We host weekly kin nights, where we get together and have fun for a couple of hours. This kinship has been going almost since the start of LOTRO itself, and we are eager to meet new people! A few of our higher-ranking members have had to depart after many years, due to real life commitments, and we hope to build our ranks again. We all thoroughly enjoy mentoring new players, myself included. Dwarrowdam would be a great choice for kinship for any player just starting out, or a continuing player looking for a relaxed social atmosphere as part of their gameplay experience! We are located on the Landroval server, which itself is known for its friendliness and its roleplay opportunities. It is our hope that gaining a solid handful of new, active members will allow our kinship to return to its former glory. Kinships can fizzle out and dissolve if too many players leave, and that is the last thing we want to happen to Dwarrowdam. It’s been like a home for me and many others, and I believe we can restore it.
Tumblr media
I am an officer in the Dwarrowdam kinship, along with Badari and Daerhovan. We strongly encourage you to contact us with any questions you might have, about the kinship or LOTRO itself, or if you would like to join Dwarrowdam.
Anyone who loves Tolkien and Middle-Earth should give LOTRO a try. For me, finding it was like filling a hole in my life I never knew existed. It’s thrilling, peaceful, emotional, hopeful, all in one - basically, everything that the stories we know and love already are, but brought to life in front of us. I’d like to think that if you tried it, you’d love it as much as I do. And if you’re in need of a kinship, please consider Dwarrowdam.
And besides, look at Gandalf and his bushy eyebrows. You can’t say no to that.

Eoghain
(I’m not writing scenes in any particular order, just whatever comes to mind. The time and POV jump around a bit as a result. I remember feeling pretty strange the first time I did a brigand quest or slayer deed in Lotro where you kill human characters. I wonder about some of those bounty-hunter type quests, the moral ambiguity of the situations and whether the people you’re helping are really worth helping at all sometimes. Berynwolf is a peaceful character but he’s champion class and I imagine he takes jobs thinking it’s the right thing to do before he really looks at the big picture.)
Berynwolf was cleaning his sword and armor in the alcove outside the Prancing Pony when the man arrived. It was the same man Beryn had spoken with yesterday, the man responsible for the blood that he now scrubbed from his armaments. Beryn had agreed to do the man a favor, driving a pack of brigands from his nearby farm. The altercation was brief but intense, and Berynwolf had killed one man and wounded another in the struggle. The kill was an accident—Beryn hadn’t meant to draw blood at all, he just wanted to scare them away—but two of the brigands had drawn daggers and gone for Beryn’s throat, and everything happened too fast, and the man was dead and Beryn was responsible. No one would mourn the brigand’s death, but Beryn had seen the man’s face every time he closed his eyes that night. He hadn’t gotten much sleep.
The owner of the farm had brought a young boy with him, twelve or thirteen years old. The boy stood nearby, silent and sullen. His face was red and blotchy, his hair a mess. Beryn glanced at the man and the boy but said nothing, soaking a clean cloth in oil and rubbing it over a particularly stubborn stain on his breastplate.
“Polishing your own armor?” the man scoffed. “Even the lowest ranking guardsmen have someone else to do that for them.”
“I’m not a guardsman,” Berynwolf said.
The man watched him work for a moment, taking a flask from his coat and swigging from it occasionally. “Those thieves haven’t returned this morning. It appears you taught them a lesson they won’t soon forget.” He sneered. “Bloody bastards’ll think twice about butchering my cattle when they see what the vultures are doing to their friend out there.”
Berynwolf winced. “I will return and bury him.”
The man raised his eyebrows. “Don’t you bother with him. Let his carcass be an example for the rest of those thieving brigands. I’ll use his bones for a scarecrow when the wolves are done with him.”
Beryn stared down at his armor, his stomach twisting at the man’s words. He saw the brigand’s face again, contorted in pain, the life leaving his eyes as his blood pooled beneath him. Beryn was beginning to regret taking the job in the first place. He wished he were a sharper judge of character. Ellwyth would have known instantly that this man was not worthy of Beryn’s trust.
“Anyway,” the man continued, “I owe you my thanks. I don’t have much in the way of coin to offer, and I don’t believe a handful of silver is fair exchange for taking a man’s life. Blood spilt is blood earned, I say.” He called to the boy suddenly, pulling him sharply by the shoulder when he didn’t respond quickly. He shoved the boy in front of him, pushing him toward Berynwolf. “This boy’s of no use to me as a stablehand. He shirks his duties and lazes about. Perhaps he’d better serve a master who can teach him to fear consequences.”
The boy wouldn’t meet Berynwolf’s eyes. He was small for his age and thin, with ill-fitting threadbare clothes. He stood with his hands clenched into fists, his eyes cast down at his worn shoes.
“He’s all yours,” the man said. His lip curled, an expression somewhere between amusement and disgust. “There’s folk around here who say you’re a pervert. So I suppose he’ll be useful to you one way or another.” The man spat on the ground, rather close to Beryn’s feet. “Someone to clean your sword for you, eh?”
The man laughed at his own rude joke as he walked away, leaving the boy standing miserably before Berynwolf. The child looked as though he were near tears, but he’d obviously had practice holding them back. He ran a sleeve under his nose, quickly.
Beryn finished polishing the breastplate and moved on to his gauntlets, dipping the cloth in oil again and scrubbing it methodically over the metal plates. “You can sit down if you want,” he said to the boy.
“I’m alright,” the boy said.
“What’s your name?”
“Eoghain, sir.”
“And you’re a stablehand? Do you like horses?”
The boy paused. “No, sir. I’m afraid of them.”
Beryn looked up at him, wrinkling his brow. The boy hastily added, “I know how to polish armor. And I’m good at running errands.”
“I don’t need an errand boy,” Beryn said.
Eoghain looked panicked and apprehensive, as though he were waiting for Beryn to strike him, or scold him.
“Do you have a place to go home to?” Beryn asked.
“The farm was my home.”
“I see.” Beryn set his work aside and pointed to the door of the Prancing Pony. “The tavern keeper here is a friend of mine, Barliman Butterbur. He’s been looking to hire someone to help out around the place. Kitchen duties, housekeeping, things like that. I could put in a good word for you. You’d have a bed and three square meals a day. How does that sound?”
Eoghain’s eyes widened. “I…I’d like that very much, sir.”
Beryn smiled. “Very good.” He took a handful of silver from his purse and held it out to the boy. “Now, go inside and see the barber. Have him take your measurements while you’re there. I’ll set to work on a new suit of clothes for you. Can’t have you starting your new job in rags and tatters.”
The boy stared at the money, hesitating. “Um…I don’t….I can’t accept that, sir. I shan’t be able to repay you…” His face went red, the apprehension returning. Beryn sensed a hint of the same disgust he’d seen in the farm owner’s eyes, the same fear.
“Hold out your hand,” Beryn instructed, and as the boy did so, he placed the coins in his open palm. “I shan’t ask you to repay me. I don’t know what your master told you, but I will not lay a hand on you. And as long as you choose to remain in Bree, I’ll see to it that you’re kept safe. You have no master here but your own will, Eoghain.”
The boy’s fingers closed over the coins and he tucked his chin, hair flopping over his eyes. “I don’t believe what they said about you, sir,” he said at last. “You’re a decent man.”
Beryn didn’t answer right away. What was decency? Had it anything to do with the number of brigands he’d slain, or the number of men he’d gone to bed with? Because that seemed to be what mattered, at least in the eyes of some folk.
“Don’t you mind what people say,” Beryn told the boy, “about me or anyone else. A person shows their quality in what they do, not what others say they do.”
“Aye, sir.” Eoghain nodded. He headed for the door of the inn, and Berynwolf resumed his work. He hoped he’d made a good choice. One fair decision did not account for a foul one, and despite what the farm owner had said, the life of a brigand was no trade for the life of another. But perhaps the boy would live without fear now, and that was a change for the better.
Beryn inspected his armor for rust, polishing a few rough spots that he’d missed. He knew it would never be quite clean. There were some stains that never washed out.

LOTRO Races from Best to Worst
I’ve been on a LOTRO kick lately, and even though I have one character that’s my main and is the one I primarily intend to focus on, I made one of each (free) race and I’m trying to get them all at least as far as Bree.
It’s important to note for the purposes of this list that metagaming really isn’t my thing, I didn’t pay attention to the stat boots and whatnot each race gets, and I can never remember what each stat does, anyway. This is mostly ranked based on how much fun I have when playing each of them.
1. Dwarves
Tumblr media
i haven’t actually played this guy, but i did have a different dwarf champion before that i deleted for reasons much too stupid to get into
Pros:
Their starting area allows you to cover the majority of the map with little backtracking or deviation from the epic questline
The first thing that happens after you start as a Dwarf is Gandalf calls you, a complete stranger, over to complain at you about Thorin and that’s such a quintessentially Gandalf thing to do that it’s hilarious
Dwarves are tough little bastards
You can have a mohawk
Even though the color palate of the Dwarf cities isn’t that much more varied that than of the Dwarf cities in Dragon Age Origins, it still feels much less oppressive, and the floors are nice and shiny.
A Dwarf player wearing a flowing gown named Fairygodmother once rode past me on a horse and I felt I’d been blessed
Cons:
They move kinda slow
They can’t be burglars
They’re short so you can’t jump over Elves without clipping through their heads
The tutorial for Elves and Dwarves is too damn long.
2. Hobbits
Tumblr media
taterberry is Best Girl
Pros:
My tiny little Taterberry is a Hobbit and she’s my precious daughter, who is currently having all sorts of off-screen adventures with Bingo and his new buddy while I work on getting The Ones That Aren’t My Taterberry to Bree
Celandine Brandybuck is a Hobbit and she’s my favorite character in the game
The Shire has a lot of fun quests
Starting in the Shire puts you in prime position to get a bunny and the fishing hobby really quickly
The tutorial for Hobbits and Men is nice and short.
Cons:
The postal carrier and pie delivery quests are a pain
Hobbits being tiny makes the corrupted trees just a touch too scary
My tiny little Taterberry is too short to jump over walls that my Man or Elf would totally be able to jump over
They’re also a bit slow. Short legs n all that
3. Men
Tumblr media
lol nice helmet nerd
Pros:
I don’t typically play humans in video games because it’s boring, but they’re not too bad here
Only (wo)Man characters get to see Celandine burn that house down
They’re tall so they can jump over Elves without clipping through their heads
After playing as a Hobbit and a Dwarf for so long, when I switched to a tall race and saw Hobbits and they’re just??? so smol??? No wonder Aragorn and Boromir are always wanting to carry them around in the movie.
Cons:
Atli Spider-bane said I could have the name Spider-bane but the Title you get for killing spiders is Spider-foe. I haven’t gotten to a Notary so I don’t know if you can make Spider-bane your surname but I doubt it.
If you just stick to the questlines and don’t go out of your way to visit any other area, you can’t find an Outfitter or Vault until you get to Bree.
4. Beornings
I'm still saving up my coins to unlock this one, but turning into a bear seems cool.
5. Elves
Tumblr media
first rule of being a mage: never, ever dress like one
Pros:
They’re tall.
They move faster than Hobbits or Dwarves.
Some of the hairstyles are kinda nice.
The pre-Bree stuff is pretty short. I managed to finish it all in about a day.
Celondim is near the ocean and it’s purdy.
Cons:
I hate Elvish cities. I get that they design them around the natural lay of the land, but the lack of railings makes me nervous (if I suffer fall damage, I want it to be because I jumped, not because I fell) and I’m always getting lost. I suffer more fall damage in Celondim and Duillond than I do taking short cuts down cliffs
They’re the only race (that I know of) that can’t be dark-skinned and I don’t need an essay explaining why I just want to comment that I like making dark-skinned characters because there are too many goddamned white people in video games
I dunno I just feel no connection to this race whatsoever. It’s all just generally kinda meh
6. High Elves
I haven’t played this one either, and I don’t understand the point of it. In what way do they significantly differ from regular Elves (note: I don’t actually care so don’t feel obligated to tell me). I also don’t like that they can be Captains. It makes my Shankswyn feel less special, and I like my Shankswyn almost as much as my tiny little Taterberry and won’t stand for anyone making her feel less special.
I might just be bitter towards this class because when I was playing my Elf the other day there were a bunch of baby High Elves hanging around, flaunting their ability to spend money on this game. I bet they’ve got jobs n shit. Bastards.
Last time I checked I was about halfway to the amount of points needed to unlock Beornings, so once I get there I’ll probably write up some thoughts of that race. I don’t know if I’ll ever play a High Elf. I’ll think about it later maybe.
I have no idea how to end this. Play LOTRO, I guess. It’s fun.

Note
So because of your posting about LOTR Online I've been thinking of trying it. Do you recommend it? If so, what do you recommend starting as? What classes are fun to play?
I have to warn you that I haven’t played since they launched Gondor, so I’m not exactly up to date with both the game and the community but I can still answer this c:
As the post said, it is the truest and closest adaptation the books have ever had. It includes locations that have never been seen or experienced before (with perhaps the exception of lego lotr or war in the north) and in generally expands greatly on the lore of the books altogether and gives a voice and visuals to many characters and locations you would have never even thought before.
Because of lotro I fell in love in Evendim and Lake Nenuial (places I wouldn’t have even thought considering before). Lotro opened my eyes to regions such as Forodwaith, Angmar, Dunland, Enedwaith, East Rohan and Eregion, places hardly ever spoken of in the books. It has completely interesting characters and storyline so I’d recommend trying it only for those. (It really has a lot of characters I wish would have been in the canon-canon, like Nona of the Dunlendings, Lothrandir of the Dunedain, Narmeleth and so on.) The beginning is very slow, but once you get past Bree and the Lone-lands you would have gotten the hang of the game.
The graphics are bad I won’t lie, but it’s something you can pass over. As for gameplay, it is designed to be solo-ed, but I’d really recommend joining a kinship early or making a fellowship of your own with 2 other people and playing together. (One as tank, one as healer and one as dps if you want). Probably the combination I’d mostly recommend for new players is Guardian, Hunter, Minstrel as the Guardian is the perfect tank, Minstrel healer and has music! And the hunter for ports and dps. Of course afterwards the next class I’d recommend is Warden, Rune-keeper or Champion but the first two are premium if I remember correctly. I’ve never tried the Captain class so I have no idea what to say. The same can be said for Burglar. Beorning has to be purchased if I’m correct.
So, as a conclusion, out of all the tolkien games out there, save Lotr: war in the north, Lotro is the most middle earth game I’d recommend for any tolkien fan.

Two new Flora repeatable quests for the Wastes have been added. Mount skill icons should now all appropriately grey out when the skill cannot be used.
Added a Stable-masters Collection button on the radar.
The Mordor map should now more correctly display fellow member locations.
Miscellaneous
Fixed a display problem that would cause effects icons to jump around and flicker. This should also be a small performance improvement for the client.
The following emotes now have animations: assist, attack, blush, brb, curtsey, drool, fight, grumble, hug, innocent, mumble, pat, ready, resist, rest, stare, stretch, succumb, sweat, tear, wait, & wink. “Nothing” should be the only text-only emote remaining for all races now. The /pat emote chat text has been changed to reflect the new animation. The hug emote will now show hugging self animation.

The French and German Mordor maps have been updated.
