I made a card game!
I love card and tile games - poker and mahjong are my two favourite games to play with friends that don't explicitly include drinking. But, I can find myself annoyed at poker, especially hold'em, where the sum total of strategic play happens during betting.
In poker, the game's practically won as soon as the deck is shuffled and the cards are dealt. Against an opponent who goes all in without checking their hand, for example, the game is entirely down to random draw - and this strategy has won high-level tournaments! In variants like five-card draw, there's more choice involved, in choosing what to discard - but, mechanically speaking, everyone's practically playing solo, the only influence you have on one another being through trying to analyse what kind of hand they might have relative to your own. There's nothing like mahjong, where discarding the wrong tile can win your opponent the game - and make you foot the bill, rather than only paying a third.
I wanted to address these issues I felt, and amplify the things I liked. So, I made Kil-Kuli. Kil-Kuli is a poker variant, similar to Pineapple. In essence, the game starts off like five-card draw, and ends like hold’em. You start off with a hand of five, and swap out cards, while slowly reducing your hand to a highly-selective two, all while the table cards are dealt. In Kil-Kuli, these discarded cards are left face-up in front of the player who discarded them, and can be used to make their own, second hand - worth half the pot - or be stolen by other players. Players can strategise, and directly engage with another, they can choose to bank on their powerful closed hand, or try to win over with their discards. Two-player games can often end as a wash, with neither side gaining or losing, unless either player makes a real grandstand play.
Having played with friends, it's a fun game. Inevitably, you both end up holding very powerful hands, but the choice to commit to the final showdown is a hard one. Whoever wins the open hand will often cut their losses, fine with breaking even, rather than risking it for the other half. With more players, the game takes on a new shape, too - vying to be one of the two winners, or to claim total victory for yourself.
I think it's fun! I hope you do, too. Here's the rules, with a pdf available on itch:

tw mass shooting
a shooting just occurred where I work. I didn't have a shift today, but seeing literally the entrance I usually come from, the bus stop I usually stop at, the area I walk in to get to my job, etc... all of those are now shut down for the investigation.
I don't know how to feel. I don't know why I'm sharing this and it's not like I was there, but I don't really wanna go into work anymore. In the past year the amount of shootings and stabbings and crimes occurring in my city has tripled. This is Canada. Mass shootings don't usually happen. And I supposedly live in the safest area in my city.
People I knew from high school have literally been murdered in the past year. Places I used to go to pre covid are now crime scenes. I can't walk to a bus stop without running into shady, intoxicated people, some of them holding knives, some of them try to approach me and trap me in one place.
Every day there's a shooting here.
I'm starting to get scared and not want leave my house.
