thoughts on uzumakis ending
so, the trailer for uzumaki that dropped a couple days ago finally kicked me into reading the last few chapters of the manga, something i had been putting off for a while, and my... the ending is fantastic. i really liked it.
spoilers for uzumaki if you havent read it.
the ending is kind of beautiful. i am all for bittersweet endings, especially in horror. at times, it can feel like the creator is phoning it in when allowing the main protagonist/s to defeat the overwhelming odds and emerge victorious.
uzumaki does not do this. they ostensibly win. let me explain.
kirie and shuichi traverse down into the depths of the dragonfly pond, discovering one of the most horrific things in the entire manga: (to me, anyway) several monoliths dedicated to the spiral, all interconnected, all breathing, all alive. they have caused all of this. they did all of this. they are directly confronted by what has made them both miserable for the past who even knows how long.
and its inescapable.
once they have reached the belly of this beast, there is no way back out. shuichi cant even move his legs anymore.
so what do you think they do? give up? no.
they show one final act of defiance.
they embrace each other. they show that despite everything theyve been through, despite everyone else being dead, despite their entire town being capsized, despite everything, they still love each other.
down in this pit, time slows until it seems not to pass. so in this forever-moment they are stuck, embracing each other. utilizing the very thing that has tortured them so to immortalize their love for each other.
idk man, i think its kind of beautiful. i love it.

Kirie: *Rolls over while sleeping and knees Shuichi in the ribs*
Shuichi: Ow, Kirie! You kneed me!
Kirie, sleepily: Yeah, I do need you.
Shuichi, on the verge of tears: Ok
