Houston’s Dunkirk...

I’m almost an exclusive TSC blog—about 99%.

But I live in Kingwood, TX (Houston) and life has changed here. So this post is about that…

This was our front yard Sunday:

First, I’d like to thank everyone who was worried about me and my family. So far, so good, and we are incredibly lucky. Sunday was dicey—we got over 13” of rain that day (total since this began about 30”) and water lapped at our house foundation. We had 3.5” before our house flooded. They had to do a controlled release from a damn to the northwest of us, and everything less than three miles away was flooded. Today, deer were swimming in our Town Center, helicopters needed to navigate power lines to airlift people from rooves, the High School was turned into a command center—their parking lot a home for dozens of boats and volunteers who went door by door making sure everyone got out. Most local churches, the middle school, the local community college are all now shelters. School was supposed to start yesterday.

For a rough estimate, we think about a third of our town has some portion underwater. We lost the YMCA, the library, one of the High Schools, the hospital needed to be evacuated, the Town Center, 2 grocery stores, innumerable local business and restaurants, etc… And we are only one small section of Houston. 75,000 in a greater city of over 5 ½ Million and that doesn’t include Corpus Christie or Louisiana who were also affected.

We’ve been shut in the entire time. The scariest time for us was when we lost power and cable and our phones would only get one bar—we didn’t know what was happening around us. Luckily that was only for half a day before we were restored. The entire freeway system in and around Houston had such extensive flooding, the city has effectively closed down. Even if we had decided to evacuate, there was no way out; and the possibility of being trapped in a flash flood was too risky. Both airports have been closed for days.

Local news has told us the stories of what’s happening around us—they have been on 24/7 since this began. It’s been an amazing thing to watch. In a country that seems so divided politically, there have been no dividing lines here. Houston is an incredibly diverse place where neighbors helped neighbors. It didn’t matter if it was a newborn baby, or an elderly person in a wheelchair, black, white, Hispanic, citizen or illegal—hell, they didn’t discriminate dogs, or cats and my daughter saw a pet possum while volunteering at a shelter tonight.

Someone needed help, and people showed up. If they had a boat, they came. So I want to give a shout out to all those people! These are just a few random and amazing stories:

-Stranded priest giving mass in a kayak to people waiting for boat pickup (last Sunday)

-Gallery Furniture store opening as shelters, mattress distribution warehouse opening as a shelter

-BSI Cotton farmer bringing his farm equipment dump truck to navigate streets to do pickups when the Coast Guard had to stop for the night.

-the hundreds of the Cajun Navy who showed up with boats (And they will work overtime returning to their native Louisiana to do this all over again, because now they are the storm’s target)

-hundreds of volunteers from all over who showed up. There was an interview with a Kentucky man who had a boat and drove down till he met water. My husband and daughters volunteered at a shelter taking in seniors, and he met some of the volunteers who came to our neck of the woods: Florida Fish and Wildlife Service (with boats) and New York Fire Department (with boats)! In our neighborhood. It is mind boggling.

And I’d also like to compliment:

-Harris County Sheriff Department, Coast Guard, Border Patrol, Search and Rescue, local Constables.

These are just a small token few, but I, as a Houstonian want to say thank you. And we got a sunset tonight.

Followup: The Marines came the next day (not to our neighborhood, but further south of us) They brought assault watercraft that could navigate practically anything. And 24,000 Reservists were called into help too.

The desire to live in an area with a top-notch school district, of course, is one of the forces that drive many home-buying decisions for families. And most parents will do whatever it takes to ensure a great eduction for their kids. But here’s the reality: You don’t need to drop a load of money on private schools to make sure your children are learning their ABCs. And you don’t need to move to the priciest parts of the country to get into a top-rated public school.

You could just need to head to the Chicago suburb of Aurora, IL—or any of the other places on our list of affordable towns with the best schools.

Realtor.com® found the best elementary schools (which received at least an 8 out of 10 ranking by education information group GreatSchools) in the largest 15 metros where buyers can find a home without breaking the bank. You’re welcome!

To compile our rankings, our economics team looked at the monthly housing costs (mortgage payments, taxes, etc.) needed to purchase a median-priced home in all of the ZIP codes in each metro. To ensure buyers were getting a deal, we factored in the median income of residents living there to ensure affordability. We also filtered out the ZIP codes with high crime and poverty rates, and for geographic diversity included only one ZIP code per metro.

“When searching for a new home, finding something affordable in a good school district with family-friendly features, such as large backyards, tops the list of home buyer priorities,” says Javier Vivas, manager of economic research for realtor.com. “These markets offer strong public schools and affordable homes, making them a great fit for home buyers with elementary school–age children.”

Aurora topped the list due to its having three top-rated elementary schools. It’s also 45% more affordable than the surrounding metro area.

“It’s absolutely family-friendly,” says local real estate broker Margaret Rowe of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage. She touted the myriad parks and family events held in Aurora.
