Meet: Vanda Barkowski, kurze, lila gefärbte Haare, Eigentümerin eines Nachtclubs namens Horny Devils Nachtclub, in dem Vampire…strippen?, I guess. Sie ist vorgeladen beim Ostküsten-Zirkel. Dessen Zirkelmeister Roman ist Inhaber von Romatech Industries, die die Blutkonserven für gesetzestreue Vampire produzieren. Die anderen Vampire, die sich von Menschen ernähren, heißen Malcontents und sind im Begriff, einen Krieg anzuzetteln.

Vanda trägt eine geflochtene Peitsche als Gürtel oder jedenfalls um den Bauch und darunter einen lila Overall.

Okay, ich muss mich hier ein bisschen in der Exposition zurechtfinden. Bis vor drei Jahren hat Vanda in Romans „Harem“ gelebt, der tagsüber von menschlichen Wachen bewacht wurde. Unter diesen war ein gewisser Phil Jones, der Einzige, der die Frauen im Harem wie Wesen mit Bewusstsein behandelte. Vanda wollte mit ihm flirten, aber Connor, Chef von Romans Sicherheitswesen (der sie hier auch empfangen hat), hat das verhindert.

In der Tür zur Versammlung gibt’s einen Zusammenstoß mit der Journalistin Corky Courant, die Beef mit Vanda hat.

Die Zirkelversammlung besteht hauptsächlich aus Männern, darunter ein gewisser Gregori – ein Freund von Vanda – und Laszlo, der Schreiber. Neben Roman sitzen zwei Sterbliche, nämlich seine Frau Shanna und ein Priester namens Father Andrew.

Anyway. Gegen Vanda werden drei Anklagen von ehemaligen Angestellten erhoben, die alle in Windeseile abgewiesen werden, aber zur Folge haben, dass Vanda Sozialstunden – pardon, ein Anti-Aggressionstraining – absolvieren muss. Bei Father Andrew. Und dann braucht sie noch einen Sponsor, was offenbar keine finanzielle Leistung bedeutet, sondern…eh? Keine Ahnung. So, wie Vanda darüber spricht, ist von Traumatherapie bis zu Kampftraining alles dabei.

Nach einigem Hin und Her erklärt sich…na? Na?

Phil Jones bereit.

Der offenbar ein richtiger silver fox ist. Mit noch ein bisschen Rot im grauen Haar. Vanda passt das gar nicht, weil…eh? Er ein Sterblicher ist und damit nicht stark genug für das Sponsoring? Oder so? Wenn ich wüsste, was er da machen soll, wüsste ich vielleicht auch, was ihr Problem ist.

Jedenfalls. Sie teleportiert sich davon.

How To Tame A Beast in Seven Days by Kerrelyn Sparks.

I just finished reading this book this morning, and wanted to give some thoughts. No spoilers!

I'm giving it a Level One Spice rating.

Some story info:

Our MC Luciana has lived her whole life (19 years) on the Isle of Moons, as she was abandoned to the convent as an infant. One night her father returns for her, and must ask her to return to the mainland with him, as the King has ordered her to marry his nephew or else her father's life is forfeit.

The man she is to marry, Leo, is known by all as "The Beast." Born with the power to absorb and use lightning, he cannot touch or be touched, without causing harm to others.

Now ~

Let us address the shirtless elephant on the cover.

I'm honestly not that big of a fan of cover shots like this, but in this case it ended up being helpful as it confirmed that I had indeed found a romance book ^^"

Granted the title would have been an indicator as well, but the model shot on the cover of a book is at least the big bright signal that you've found the romance genre.

Now about the content:

To me this overall felt like a great first book to have someone read if they were wanting to dip their toes into the realm of romance. Our main character is even a virgin, so her new experiences with it all are an excellent toe dip into the spicy flavor of the genre.

I will say there was only one spicy scene, and the majority of the content circled their dance around each other. Which I didn't mind, since the plot of the story was pretty engaging, especially with the humor that's provided by Kerrelyn.

One thing I felt was a bit off, and @domesticandlovingmonsters agreed that it was a thing that happens with a lot of romances, is that the pacing felt rushed both at the start of the book and towards the end.

I can understand with the beginning, since we're trying to get to our lovers and their fun interactions. But as I went through the ending of the book, so much of it felt very rushed.

I do intend to read the books that follow in this series, mostly to get more of Kerrelyn's sense of humor. And I want to see if Kerrelyn's writing style evolves with her series, giving us a more in-depth layer to this world she's created.

The Vampire Kisses series is my all time comfort series and Inkheart (of course). How to Marry a Millionaire Vampire by Kerrelyn Sparks I have read A LOT of times (also a series but that one in particular I love).

This month I read “How to Marry a Millionaire Vampire” by Kerrelyn Sparks. Romance/Paranormal. Published July 26, 2005

I had a lot of fun with this, despite it being pulp. I was invested in the plot and characters, and I liked the world the author set up. I liked the power set the vampires had, having classic stuff like being burnt by sunlight, as well as more unusual stuff like teleportation.

However, it’s still a pulp novel, and it feels like a second draft. Things could have been condensed a little better, and the female protagonist could have been a little less dumb. She didn’t figure out her boyfriend was a vampire until past the halfway point. She’s supposed to be in her late 20’s, but the way she spoke, thought, and acted made her seem closer to 17. I did like the male protagonist more, being more serious and not super interested in sex. Both characters were described pretty vaguely, and I had difficulty physically picturing them in my head.

This book was written in 2005 and you can absolutely tell. Every other chapter a female character is worrying about gaining weight, or what dress size they wear, there’s even a section where the female protagonist thinks that her gaining 10 pounds literally caused a man’s death. I’m not joking or exaggerating. The scene was pretty funny.

There was a part that bothered me where a terrorist kidnapp a guy and set off a bomb, and the main characters dig their friend out of rubble and get her into an ambulance. Then they go to an underground bunker, bang, and then decide to rescue their friend who was kidnapped by terrorists. Priorities.

The ending was way to rushed. In the last chapter the characters defeat the bad guy, drop a bit of sequel bait, kiss, and it’s over. No epilogue or resolution. They don’t even get married. The word “Marry” is in the title.

7/10. I enjoyed it a but it’s got a lot of flaws. May or may not be worth your time.
