Plot Synopsis: Lydia, a successful professional organizer, is constantly trying to grow her business, but even her ambition takes a back seat to love when she meets Robert, a frazzled widower with two young children. A toy inventor, Robert is asked to present his new Christmas toy line to a superstore. His challenge is he only has 12 days to get his life and his business in order. Talk about a Christmas rush! Lydia shows Robert that this task goes way deeper than messy junk drawers and encompasses every aspect of his life. While she’s intent on helping him straighten out details he had long ignored, Robert teaches the buttoned-up Lydia that messiness can be a delightful part of life. (x)

In My Humble Opinion: If you want your fill of single parents, chaste romances, and long odes to living in small towns, you turn on a made-for-TV Christmas movie. Because every Hallmark-branded movie seems to be overflowing with those kinds of things. Less in abundance in the genre? Self-awareness. You will rarely see a made-for-TV Christmas movie acknowledge just how weird parts of its premise are. Probably because to acknowledge the weirdness is to ruin the fantasy of it all (or in a more mean spirited sense, you don’t want to hang a lampshade on your shoddy plotting).

So when Christmas in the Air acknowledged early on the fact that “professional organizer” isn’t really a normal career for someone to have, I was tickled. It almost felt like entering into another dimension, one where the characters themselves are in on the joke of how absurd the story they are playing out is. It was a really nice throwaway moment that made me appreciate the movie more.

I only wish they could have gone all the way with the self-awareness, because while they had loads of room to criticize the leading lady’s career choice of “organizing”, nobody gave the male lead flack for being a toy inventor whose big invention was ... a remote controlled flying sleigh. That exists? That wouldn’t be a hot ticket seller? Because it exists? Remote controlled planes and helicopters have existed for years? Why is everyone acting like they accomplished something tremendous here? Self-awareness, where art thou?

Sadly, the self-awarness had gone away to pave the way for a chemistry free romance between the leads. One where they look at stars and talk about focusing and snow globes and never mention that remote-controlled flying objects have existed for decades.

Then again, at its heart, made-for-TV Christmas movies are part of a fantasy genre. So if Game of Thrones can get away with pretending dragons do exist, then I guess Christmas in the Air can get away with pretending remote-controlled airplanes don’t. Doesn’t mean I have to like it though. Doesn’t mean I can’t wish for the world where these movies played into their craziness instead.

Watch If: You judge your romantic prospects by their knowledge of Sirius the star, if you need to get a day planner for Christmas, or if mac & cheese is a delicacy in your house.

Skip If: You think you can organize creativity, if you don’t want to get into the focus box, or if you think matching your socks is the peak of organizing.

"This isn't something you can just not tell me." Studiocanal UK has released another official UK trailer for the cheesy romance film Midnight Sun, which is actually a remake of a Japanese film of the same name released in 2006 (Taiyô no uta). The story follows a young woman with a rare skin disease that, if exposed to the sun's rays, she could potentially die so she stays indoors only going out at night. Hollywood took this and turned it into a super sappy romance that reminds me a bit of Everything, Everything, but it also just looks like an eye-rolling sweet story of young love. Bella Thorne stars, with Patrick Schwarzenegger, Rob Riggle, Quinn Shephard, Ken Tremblett, Jenn Griffin, and Nicholas Coombe. Watch below.

Based on the Japanese film, Midnight Sun centers on Katie, a 17-year-old sheltered since childhood and confined to her house during the day by a rare disease that makes even the smallest amount of sunlight deadly. Fate intervenes when she meets Charlie and they embark on a summer romance. Midnight Sun is directed by American filmmaker Scott Speer, a music video and dance director of only the film Step Up Revolution previously. The screenplay is written by Eric Kirsten; based on the screenplay for the Japanese film Taiyô no uta (first released in 2006) by Kenji Bando. Open Road Films will release Speer's Midnight Sun in theaters everywhere starting March 23rd coming up next month. Curious? Anyone want to see it?
