Salmon for everyone! A brown bear (nicknamed “Uno” for her one ear) and her two cubs walk along a river in Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Preserve. Visitors in July watch some 2,000 brown bears grab sockeye salmon around the Brooks Camp waterfall.

It's almost time for the Bear cams at Brooks Falls and other places around Katmai National Park and Preserve to go live.

Forever Alaska! (Katmai National Park & Preserve)
flickr
Forever Alaska! (Katmai National Park & Preserve) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: I captured this with my Nikon D800E SLR camera using a Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 lens. I was at the Falls Platform with a view looking to the northeast at the Brooks Falls while observing brown bears in Katmai National Park. Here I zoomed in with the focal length to minimize much of the waterfalls (but have enough as a little backdrop) and focus on this one bear at the top of the falls as it waited for salmon to make the jump upward.

I have resolved to mark my calendar for next year so that I don’t miss a day of voting! The event runs from October 4-10, 2023 so there really are only a couple of days left to vote. Last year I discovered Fat Bear Week – Katmai National Park and Preserve is…

This year's fat bear week winner!
Tumblr media
"She’s beauty and she’s grace, she stuffed so much salmon in her face.
You will wear the crown, be the crown! You ate the crown!?! 👑 Congrats to the 2023 #FatBearWeek champion, 128 Grazer! With a dominant performance (We haven't seen a walk like that since Jurassic Park), Grazer’s resilience and strength is the epitome of Katmai’s brown bears.
Hey, I’m gliding here! Grazer’s combination of skill and toughness makes her one of Brooks River’s most formidable, successful, and adaptable bears, who is well prepared for winter.
Thanks again to this year’s competing bears, the salmon who made it all possible, Katmai National Park & Preserve, the Katmai Conservancy, explore.org, and all of YOU who championed your favorite bears.

Mother Bear + Junior on Hilltop
flickr
Mother Bear + Junior on Hilltop by David & Shiela Glatz Via Flickr: Coastal Brown Bear (Ursus arctos) mother and her yearling cub. They are tired from dodging other larger bears, and dealing with intense and constant wind, all day. Mom is assessing the situation from the top of a hill. It’s a bit intimidating to us - our group of 4 is at the bottom of that hill, on a small ridge overlooking the stream. She’s looking right at us. Uncropped image.

The Mission While Out in Nature Is To Be And Enjoy (Katmai National Park & Preserve) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: The Mission While Out in Nature Is To Be And Enjoy One just has to savor the creation and beauty all 'round It's an amazing gift to stand and see that wildness Yes, waking up today is a blessing, but this is the icing on a cake It's good to have friends, to share memories and time And remember it's not about the gear or toys gathered. Another work of short poetry or prose to complement the image captured one morning in Katmai National Park & Preserve while on a hike up the side of Dumpling Mountain. This view was looking to the east-southeast across Naknek Lake to ridge lines and mountain peaks of the Aleutian Ranges. I angled my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward in order to capture and use the mountainside for a sweeping view across this setting in the national park. I did some initial post-processing work making adjustments to contrast, brightness and saturation while playing around as I learned how to work with DxO PhotoLab 3.
