Left of Black S11 · E21 | Karla F.C. Holloway on Black Detective Novels
What does it mean to write in the literary traditions of such giants as Chester Himes and Walter Mosley who wrote iconic stories about Black detectives in crime fiction? In this very special episode of Left of Black, host and Duke University Professor Mark Anthony Neal is joined by long-time colleague and Duke Emerita Professor Karla F.C. Holloway as they discuss her latest novel, Gone Missing in Harlem, which has been hailed by Publishers Weekly as, "...a page-turner and a portrait of a vanished era." This is Professor Holloway's second  novel to date, which followed A Death in Harlem, a mystery set in the moment of the Harlem Renaissance.

Have you ever Gone Missing in Harlem? Book Review
Have you ever Gone Missing in Harlem? I have to say I enjoyed this novel by @ProfHolloway. Thank you @netgalley for this ARC. I previously discussed it on Monday at @lastreadbooks #GoneMissingInHarlem #BookReview #LastRead #Netgalley #CrimeFiction
Download Gone Missing in Harlem by Karla F. C. Holloway is her highly anticipated second novel, from her In Harlem series. This book is set against the backdrop of the real and infamous Charles Lindbergh  kidnapping and murder case of the 1930s. In Gone Missing in Harlem, the child in question is a baby girl called Chloe. Unlike the Lindbergh case, however Chloe’s disappearance doesn’t garner as…

Last week we lost a giant; the scholar, artist, and educator, David C.Driskell.
@artnews
asked me to reflect on his work and life. As a Howard Art History grad, I’ve benefited directly from all that he’s given to the field. Shortly after Driskell’s passing my grandmother, who was one year older than Driskell, transitioned. My grandmother, Lorraine, was brilliant, fierce and courageous just as we knew Driskell to be. I miss her deeply, already.
I’m grieving in isolation with Karla FC Holloway’s book, “Passed On: African American Mourning Stories.” (The cover features the work “Funeral Procession” (1940) by Ellis Wilson, which was included in Driskell’s landmark 1977 exhibition “Two Centuries of Black American Art,”). I’ve been ruminating about how grieving is so integral to Black life, it’s inherit to the way we live and navigate this world because Black Death is so consistent and assured. We mourn through extravagant adornment, libations poured, movements danced and tears wept. In a moment when we can’t gather, fellowship, and eulogize, this is an especially difficult time for many of us. My heart is with the Driskell family and all those who are unable to gather in lamenting their recently deceased. [link to my essay is in bio]
