Kannauj Attar
What would you call it if not an Irony, the country that has been producing the finest quality attar perfumes for ages has no globally recognized perfume brand under its belt. In the heart of India, amidst the bustling streets and rich cultural tapestry, lies Kannauj, a city steeped in history and renowned for its centuries-old tradition of attar making. This attar, also known as Kannauj perfume, holds a special place in the world of fragrance, revered for its exquisite craftsmanship and lingering scents that captivate the senses. The art of attar making in Kannauj traces its roots back to ancient times when skilled artisans perfected the craft through generations of dedication and passion.
                             Preserving Tradition, Embracing Innovation.
The journey of turning fragrant flowers into attars in India, particularly in Kannauj, is steeped in rich history and traditions. This art of making attars has thrived since ancient times, with the knowledge and techniques passed down through generations. The botanical ingredients sourced from nature and the traditional methods used serve as powerful reminders of our deep connection to the land and our ancient heritage. The full-fledged perfume city of India and the nickname “Ittra Nagri” are no fiction, because there are over 500 attar-making units there. The process is handed down to generations from generation to generation and uses specialized equipment such as copper still (Degs), steel/aluminum receivers (Bhapka), traditional furnaces (Bhatti), cooled water tanks (Gachchi), and solid leather bottles (Kuppi). These instruments together with the craftsmen's knowledge are responsible for the legitimacy and superiority of Indian attars. Nowadays, the tradition remains in high esteem just like in the past century. The craftsmen pay attention to learning and preserving the skills and knowledge that have been handed down for years. As the survival of attar making tradition symbolizes the perseverance of natural fragrance and the creative work of those in the industry, it also signifies the considerable power these fragrances possess beyond their scent.

Note
with regards to your last ask, i have so many ideas for virat's omega scent! i think virat's omega scent would be very traditionally Indian. like lotuses or mangoes or night jasmine, which we call parijata. the lotus and the mango are the national flower and fruit of India, respectively and parijata has great mythological significance as well as being used for religious worship and traditional medicine, called ayurveda. arabian jasmine, which we call mogra, is also a shout. it is a sacred flower in hinduism, and it is woven into a chain called a gajra, which is traditionally worn by brides in their hair. I can also see rosewater being his fragrance, which is also used in many religious and cultural rituals. or maybe the aroma of sandalwood, called chandan in sanskrit and quite a few other indic languages. sandalwood has a warm and creamy fragrance, and its paste is used frequently in ritualistic worship. sandalwood has been a part of the indian perfume industry since the ancient days. another option is holy basil, which we call Tulsi. the plant is of immense mythological and medicinal significance in india. or maybe petrichor, the smell of the wet earth after the first rains of monsoon, which is a popular perfume manufactured especially in Kannauj, an Indian city. Another choice is him smelling like locally cultivated Indian spices, like turmeric, saffron, garlic, tamarind, cardamom, etc. or maybe incense, which is like a material that releases an aroma upon being burnt. it's composed of fragrant materials like frankincense and camphor, and it's used mainly for religious worship, aromatherapy and aesthetic purposes. i just think virat should smell like an object endemic/native to India, or associated with the country. :)
if you want, i can send you options for other people's scents too, we're doing a lesson on aromatherapy in psychology right now, and what better way to make use of what I've learnt? 😂
Damn you have thought about this!
Feel free to send if you want to :)

How to Buy Natural Perfume Oils: A Step-by-Step Guide
Seeking pure, high-quality attars feels intimidating for first-timers facing the enormous global market. How do you identify and Buy Natural Perfume Oils that warrant investment without getting duped by synthetic knockoffs? This definitive guide from India’s legendary Kannauj artisans shares insider tips for procuring exquisite attars you’ll treasure. Follow these pro-vetted steps for sourcing elite single notes like Best Ruh Khus Attars and mitti attars, deciphering quality benchmarks, navigating budgets, comparing retailing partners, spotting red flags, care instructions, and much more. You’ll gain confidence navigating the alluring world of artisanal attars.
Learn Scent Profiles and Preferences
Since attars distill innate aromas of botanical and earthen origins, begin by reflecting on personal scent inclinations. Are you attracted to bold florals like rose or jasmine? Do earthy tones of oudh and sandalwood appeal most? Or perhaps bright fruits and spices entice you.
Tumblr media
Consider Attars for Gifting experiential qualities, too, regarding mental vs. emotional effects, energy boosting, or relaxation/sleep-inducing properties. Additionally, wearing single-note samples helps ascertain affinity towards pure extracts versus complex blended compositions. Defining these baseline scent preferences guides the decisions of Holocaust survivors when selecting from thousands of possible natural perfumes that match innate tastes.
Research Attar Production Nuances
Every India attar comes from plant extracts, but the real difference is in how they're made. Look into old-school methods like cold processing that keep the plants' best qualities and don't use fake stuff like mass-produced ones do. Expert makers also let their attars age for a long time, which can take months or years, to get the scent just right. Check out places known for their attar skills, like Kannauj, where they've been doing it for generations and the result is amazing scents and colors. Knowing how these special attars are made can help you find the real deal and avoid the ones that take shortcuts.
Determine Usage Plans and Budget Range
When you're thinking about using attars, whether it's for feeling good, spiritual stuff, fancy beauty habits, or giving them as gifts, knowing why you want them helps you pick the right ones. Since they're made with pure stuff and need a lot of work, they can be pricey. The cost can change based on how hard it is to make them, how much they can make, and how rare the ingredients are. Flowers usually cost more than tougher materials like wood or seeds. Think about how much you can spend, if you can get small samples to try, if you can try them out before you buy a lot, and things like shipping costs if you're buying from another country. This will help you narrow down your choices to what fits your plans and budget.
Scrutinize Sources and Certifications
Trustworthy attar sellers like Kannauj Attars are all about being open about getting their ingredients and making their attars without adding any bad stuff. Make sure to check out where the attars come from and look for proof like safety tests that show they're safe and won't cause allergies. Sites like Kannauj Attar are proud of their family history of making attar and working with local growers, helping the local economy. These good practices show you can count on them when you're looking for where to buy from.
Tumblr media
Review and Vet Customer Feedback
Don't just go by what the sellers say; what other customers think can really help you decide on an attar. Look at reviews for what people say about how strong the scent is, if there's any trouble with shipping, and how the seller helps after you buy. See if people talk a lot about the attar and share pictures - that's a sign they really like it. You can also talk directly to the sellers to find an attar you'll love. Good attar sellers will always be there to listen, help, and teach you as you choose.
Wrapping Up
By progressing through these steps under the guidance of respected artisans like Kannauj Attar, intimidation transforms into attar inspiration as you discover kindred natural Kannauj Perfume transporting and treasured across lifetimes.

Of all flowers, methinks a rose is best.” - William Shakespeare
Tumblr media
In Sanskrit, the rose flower is referred to as “Shatavari”, meaning, a flower with hundred petals. Ayurvedic textbook refers to rose water as the best ingredient that balances “Sadhaka Pitta”, a sub-dosha of Pitta, which controls our emotion and its effect on heart and thoughts. Rose water is also considered as “Tridoshic” as it aids in balancing Vata, Pitta and Kapha. The history of rosewater dates back to 10th century in Persia, where it was used to accentuate the beauty and elegance of kings and queens in ancient times.
A fragrant beauty tonic created by distillation of rose petals in water is known as Best Rose Water for Face . It is a potent source of anti-oxidants, minerals and vitamins that boosts skin radiance and provides hydration. According to Ayurveda, the rose water has anti-inflammatory, anti-ageing and anti-bacterial properties that make it a hero ingredient for treating myriad skin problems such as redness, dryness, dehydration and open pores. Apart from this, having cooling properties, it also improves digestion and relieves acidity and heartburn.
One of the best advantage of Rose water found in ingredient list of any cosmetic product, is that it suits all skin types and gives a healthy glow to the skin. This champion ingredient has attracted many skincare enthusiasts to imbibe in daily skincare needs. Kannauj, the perfume distillery city of India has been the master creator of 100% pure rose water in the world.
I have come across different Rose Water products on the Instagram. Different brands promise different results on face.  But, there’s one brand that triumphs over all – Mantra Herbal. I got to know about Mantra Herbal’s Gulab Arka, from a beauty influencer on a social media platform. I was astonished to witness the diverse methods demonstrated for Gulab Arka as a multi-tasker aesthetic tonic.
The brand, Mantra Herbal descends from the legacy of Baidyanath, which has a century of expertise in making ayurvedic products. The most highlighting feature of this PETA-certified brand is that they have identified twelve toxic chemicals such as Parabens, SLS, SLES, Artificial color and fragrances. These twelve harmful chemicals are cited as “The Dirty Dozen” and excluded from the products. This makes Mantra Herbal a brand that follows transparent labeling policy in which a consumer consciously knows about all the ingredients in the product.  The other spotlight aspect of this conscious beauty brand that it has curated all the products based on the basic principles of Ayurveda – Vata, Pitta & Kapha. They have unique products that aim to pacify all the three doshas.
As mentioned earlier, Gulab Arka is Mantra Herbal’s most iconic product that has been a super seller since its inception. Infused with the finest quality of rose extracts from Kannauj, this rose water balances pH, provides intense hydration and enhances complexion. Being entirely free from toxic chemicals, Gulab Arka can be used as a facial toner post-cleansing. Every drop of this super-charged antioxidant elixir calms skin rashes, redness and breakouts for oily skin. The mesmerizing floral aroma energizes mind and body. Add Gulab Arka in your freshly prepared homemade face mask to boost glow in weekly skincare routine. For extremely dry skin in winters, you may add a few drops of Glycerin and massage onto your face for locking moisture after bath. At night, sprinkle this rose water onto face and neck before applying your most-loved facial oil for complete skin rejuvenation.
Gulab Arka’s versatile property makes it an excellent scalp tonic to treat scalp dryness and itchiness. If binge watching a web series makes your eyes tired, then this product works as an instant eye refresher that shreds away tiredness and puffiness. Or if dark circles have been bothering you then you may spray Gulab Arka in a cotton ball and keep it pated on eyes for relaxation. Especially during summers, add 5ml to 10ml of rose water in Thandai, a well known Indian cold-drink, to boost digestion and alleviate bloating.
Rose water is a mega-hit ingredient in the cosmetic industry for its benefits for skin. Mantra Herbal’s Gulab Arka is quite a differentiating product that I have used personally. The superior grade quality, reasonable price and travel friendly packaging will definitely make you a true fan of this product.

Kannauj Attar
Traditional Attars might be a novel concept for some, their roots trace back to ancient history. In the evolving landscape of the 2020s, a surge in demand for Attars is anticipated. In the heart of India, where history and tradition intertwine, lies the town of Kannauj, a haven for an ancient art that has been crafting olfactory masterpieces for over 400 years. Kannauj attar, also known as ittr, stands as a testament to the town's rich heritage.
In this blog, let's try to understand the captivating world of Kannauj attar, exploring its history, craftsmanship, and the sensory journey it offers.
Let's grasp the fundamental concept of what an Attar is?  Attar, also known as ittar, is a type of concentrated perfume oil crafted without alcohol. Obtained from flowers, herbs, and spices through methods like hydrodistillation, these oils are prized for their 100% pure and natural composition, free from toxic chemicals. Kannauj ancient city is the perfume capital of India. For centuries, perfumers in Kannauj have worked their alchemy to create ‘liquid gold.’ This place is situated in the Ganges belt, has been a hub for crafting attar, oil-based botanical perfumes, through traditional distillation methods for centuries. The town's architecture, including crumbling sandstone ramparts and onion-domed minarets, narrates its storied past. Today, it's a place where time doesn't move on; it accumulates, creating a unique ambiance that adds to the allure of Kannauj attar. Venturing into the narrow lanes of Bara Bazaar, the main market in Kannauj, is like stepping back in time. Here, shops with a history as rich as their fragrances are filled with finely cut glass bottles holding attar. These craftsmen conjure fragrances that transcend time, showcasing the mastery passed down through generations. In the midst of Bara Bazaar, men sit cross-legged, engaging in the timeless ritual of exploring vials and applying perfumed cotton swabs behind their ears.
The production of attar oils, especially floral attars, is a meticulous process often carried out in remote areas, ensuring that flowers are processed promptly after being plucked. The equipment integral to the traditional attar-making process includes the traditional Deg or Still, the Bhapka or Receiver, the Traditional Bhatti or Furnace, the Gachchi or Cooling Water Tank, and the Kuppi or Leather Bottle.
In the hands of skilled attar craftsmen, this array of equipment ensures that the attar-making process remains true to its roots. The combination of copper stills, receivers, traditional furnaces, cooling water tanks, and leather bottles reflects the commitment to preserving the authenticity and richness of attar oils through generations.
Tumblr media
In conclusion, Kannauj attar is not just a fragrance; it is a journey through time, a sensory exploration of an art form that has withstood centuries. In a world of mass-produced scents, Kannauj attar stands as a symbol of tradition, craftsmanship, and timeless elegance. As you immerse yourself in the captivating aromas of Kannauj, you embark on a fragrant odyssey that transcends the boundaries of time and culture, leaving you with an indelible connection to this ancient town and its olfactory legacy.
