Gathering Side story: Overwhelming stampede

Author's Note: when I started this series it was all vibes and now that it some somewhat coherent a character who got pushed to the wayside was Dino. Which sucks because he's a lot more interesting to write for me than the others. However, at times his powers were tied to Dinosaurs and the toku inspiration I did with his powers seemed incongruent with the tone I was trying to go for. which made writing him harder and harder as I wanted it to gather to be more introspective, but for side stories I can do whatever I want. Dino for me was always a mix of Hayato and Eji from Kamen Rider. Z from Ultaman Z a little bit of Gambit/Deadpool (Comic Deadpool) from X-men, and my personality. As you will see by his slightly changed powers. Whereas TJ was always meant to be more Takeshi, Ren (Ryuki) from Kamen Rider and Cable/Wolverine from X-men, and Max McDaniels from the Tapestry series by Henry H. Neff … (please read it if you haven't.) So this is meant as a mini-story that gives him space to be as crazy and outlandish as possible so for all of my long-time readers here is Dino restored in all his over-the-top Toku temur comic(y) glory.

You know who we should call to fill our game...," Sakura starts before pausing dramatically to Connor and Yunjin. Yunjin and Connor stare at the young woman pensively, before she makes her suggestion.

"Cival," Sakura said suggesting me to her group of friends. Connor and Yunjin look at her wary as the last time they saw me, I was (successfully) trying not to freak out as Sakura let me down easily by telling me that she was a lesbian. Yunjin however saw the excitement on Kkura’s face and ran with it.

"You know what? it's been a while since we've seen the madman and even longer since we have played with him. let's see what he's got?" Yunjin says exuberantly. This leads to them calling me. well, Sakura calling me.

"Yo Kkura what's up?" I ask

"Oh great answered you answered Civy. we need a fourth for our commander game. You down?" Sakura said

"What about Dexter he's usually y'all's resident Temur player," I asked confused

"He's exploring Naya so currently we need an Unhinged Calm Man." Sakura teases

" So you are telling me that Dexter Mr "Yeah I am so Ketria" is trying the shard I told him he would like, and best suit him? Wow, I'm surprised; not really of course, but you thought of me in his stead...well...I am touched. Okay, I'll be there in a bit. Does it need to be a Temur deck or can it be something else?" I respond

"Yes. We are playing our wedges and shards so you need to as well." Yunjin insists in the background

"Okay, Kkura." I groan. I end the phone call. I finish my in-n-out order adding them to it. After getting the food I teleport to Le Sserafim's dorm. the popping noise that accompanied it jolted the people present.

"Yah Cival-oppa you just can't pop in on us like that," Yunjin says holding her heart

"But I have food," I say as I hold the in-n-out bag with their food. Kkura and Yunjin smile. Connor groans.

"Ah no shake shack," he says disappointed

"Hey, when you're willing to pay for it I will pick it up for you all you want. In n Out is cheap and delicious so don't complain. " I say to him.

I hand Kkura her strawberry shake, Yunjin her vanilla, and Connor his chocolate one.

"Oh, you remembered our orders," Yunjin says elated

"Of course. yall are still my friends." I reply

Sakura looks at me guilty and says, "Sorry for forgetting about you Civy."

"It's no big deal. I couldn't afford to move to Korea, and you guys moved on. No hard feelings. the only hard feelings I have are for Dexter. I mean how did he of all people get Eunbi freaking Kwon?" I joke which gets the laugh I was kinda fishing for with Yunjin, Connor, and Sakura.

"So how have you been Civy?" Sakura asks

"Ah, you know same old, same old. fighting monsters taking pictures writing stories.. I reply

"Oh, how are you adjusting?" Connor asks

"Ehh, it's fine. It feels scummy at times but it's a job someone has to do" I answer

"Yeah, it can be weird," Connor says and leaves it at that.

I stayed silent about Voruna and her training me because last I heard Connor and her had a falling out

"So Cival" Yunjin says in a tone and a shoulder shake that lets me know I am not going to really *appreciate* what she says next, "Meet anyone "Lovely?" I groan and reply

"No Jen. I am still a single pringle although I am less ready to mingle." I reply. Sakura looks dejected hearing that.

"I am sorry," Sakura says as she takes a dejected sip of her shake.

I turn to Kkura look her in her eyes and say, "Look Kkura, I don't want this to be awkward. You are fantastic and while I believe we would have made an excellent power couple I understand that your heart is elsewhere, and honestly good for you Siyeon is such a hottie I mean sheesh." Kkura finally cheers up and Yunjin just has to sour the mood.

"See this is why we need you Cival around more. You are the best hype man and Cheerleader." Yunjin exclaims.

"I have been told I am good in limited amounts so that's why I stay in the background," I say before taking a bite of my burger and some fries. Kkura and Yunjin laugh.

"So Madman what crazy build are you on now?" Connor asks

"Borb and Phb food chain, but casual. I have a Thrasios Krark deck in the works but it needs time to bake. Or maybe I should just switch it to Jeska Thrasios." I answer as I ponder my next higher-power deck.

"Is it your definition of casual?" Yunjin asks me pointing. I nod which makes her bring out her "Big Guns"

"Oh, Kaalia my favorite," I say sarcastically. Sakura laughs and pulls out her equally menacing. Simmone and Dina deck. I face her and she points to Yunjin. This leads to Connor bringing out Narset Enlightened Exile.

“Narset!” I point out exaggerated “bleugh now I have to play mean.” I tease

Yunjin smirks before saying, “Cival you always play mean.”

I laugh and give a hyperbolic groan before taking out my deck. Sakura grabs my commander and reads it “Oh I like it.” she says. As we get ready for the game Kazuha walks in and smiles when she sees me.

“Oh hi Percival long time no see,” she said as she walked over to hug me. We hug and I say

“Yeah well, your friends called me up to beat them and I couldn't say no.” I relate to Kazuha. She laughs as she steals a couple of fries “Eh? How rude!” I scoff feigning disapproval while Kazuha just rolls her eyes as she walks out. I turn to face my opponents who laugh.

“I forgot how friendly you were,” Kkura says.

I shrug and say, “Yep friendly and ferocious like a bake kujira.”

Yunjin rolls her eyes before saying, “Ugh you and those yokai.” I shrug her off as we start. I mulligan down to four and then we begin. Sakura opens up with turn one lotus petal and goth Triome. Yunjin starts the game with land, a “Sol ring” and a “talisman of conviction”

“Wow, an overloaded vandal blast or cyclonic rift would be so good here.” I joked and the look I got from the table was hilarious. So I just played a land and mystic remora.

“Civil please don't scare us like that,” Connor whined

“Well gotta keep you on your toes because I know y'all get complacent and that's when bad things happen,” I respond. Curious as to where my replacement was I asked “So where is the big man?”

“Oh, he and Eunbi are working. He's filming a bunch of videos for her new mini album.” Sakura answers

I nod and smile as I say, “You know what…good for him.”

The next turn Sakura plays an arbor elf and an overgrown tomb. Yunjin gets more ramp for her commander plus another land, and Connor plays an esper Sentinel and arid mesa. On my next turn, I play commander and I pay for remora having played another land. To play my commander I needed to use the Jeweled lotus, lotus petal, and rejuvenating springs to play Borb and Phb. On his ETB Sakura flashes in orchish bow masters and kills Esper Sentinel. I chuckle and pass. The door opens and Chaewon drudges in along with Eunchae. I turn around and I see Chaewon and Eunchae make the visible connection.

“Percy!,” the two girls yell excitedly. I groan and stand up as the two race over to hug me.

“How are my two favorite Chaes?” I ask

Chaewon holds me tighter while Eunchae says, “Oppa please bully Kkura unnie and Yunjin unnie they have been teasing me and calling me baby all the time.” Eunchae lamented

I turn to my friends who look at me in terror. I shrug and say, “I have to win now.” they look at me in abject terror as I hear both Chaes laugh maniacally in the background.

Chaewon smiles as she and Eunchae break the hug and say something in Korean I couldn't pick up (because it was too fast) all I got was Astrid Wesker.

“Hold up Astrid who?” I asked

“Astrid Wesker.,” Yunjin said confused.

I turned to Connor who read my confused expression and said “The Weskers are cool now. They have done their time and are repentant.,” My eyes widen as I get back to the game it's my turn and I swing my commander at Sakura. She takes six which leaves her almost out of ad nauseam range. On Yunjin’s turn, I exile Kaalia in response to her equipping a swift foot boots to it. This leaves me open to using counterspell on Narset the next turn. On my next turn I swing at Sakura again leaving her completely out of naus range which gives me space to breathe I play a Ragavan and another land as well as paying for mystic remora and pass. Sakura biting the bullet destroys mystic remora. I shrug and make sure to kill Kaalia, and Narset again. Sakura is missing land drops Simone and Dina aren't opposed to me, and the other two decks are so commander-reliant that facing them equated to don't let the commanders resolve. which I told them, and now they're realizing it firsthand. This beatdown goes on for three more turns before I just draw into the food chain and hit draw my deck before casting Laboratory Maniac. Only for Yunjin to have me lose the game by killing it with Esper Sentinel, with a little help from Kkura and Connor. Instead of casting the breach that was in my hand and brain-freezing them to death. I let them have their pyrhic victory, which of course leads to Narset winning because Narset is good at punishing health totals. After the game Yunjin winces.

Connor laughs at Yunjin's expression then turns to me and says, "Dang Cival back at it again with the big beaters." I shrug and tell them that play better which gets a laugh out of Kkura and Connor Yunjin just scowls then joins in.

Cut to 45 minutes later the girls had just finished getting ready and looked like they were about to head out, "So, what's next?" I ask hoping to tag along like old times.

"Well, we gotta go to Astrid's office. you can come if you want." Connor suggests.

"Ah, I don't know," I replied still reluctant because of Weskers being well Weskers.

"There will be pretty girls there," Sakura said

"I'm there," I responded without hesitation. I didn't come off my adrenaline high until we were outside her office and thought this would be a bad idea. I debate whether this is a good idea but I remember that I have no self-control around pretty girls. So here I was walking into the intimidating gray building with the only thought being "Oh God why am I here"

"Oh hey, Muffins," I say out loud as I walk over to the bakery. The lady working the counter is super nice and knows English which makes my attempts at broken Korean invalidated. Admirable but invalidated nonetheless. I pay for my blueberry Muffins (Because they are top-tier) and begin to eat them. As I walk back into the Lobby I look to see several men with guns pointed at my friends

"I take it you're not security are you," I ask. One of the men angrily gestures at me and yells in Korean. I groan as I can only really make out "That black guy." I finish my muffin and outstretch my hand. when I bring it back to my face I am surprised to see Destroyor. I shrug and slot it into my Riser. I transform in a flash of colors before my Destroyer armor comes on. The guys shout more Korean before shooting me. I sigh as the bullets melt before they can reach me.

"You'd think that they would see the transformation and ponder. Hey, maybe we shouldn't fight the one who just did that." I lamented as I summoned My Lava Lance. I ran to the nearest man in the suit and slashed at him he fell to the ground with a searing wound. I charged to the next one who was still reloading, and slashed at him as well. I turn to the last few who look at me confused. I lift the Lance and spin Lash letting the lava spread all over them. After they were handled The elevator opened and I could hear a high-pitched voice say

"Well it's about time you apologized TJ." I am shocked to see a young lady who bears an uncanny resemblance to Ada Wong, and to her left a tiny blonde woman who is following her.

"You're not TJ. you're much too colorful and vibrant." The not Ada said.

I deactivated my armor and replied, "Sorry to disappoint but I did just help you I think."

"Yes, you did a fine job. Do you want a medal?” the not Ada says sarcastically. I look at her confused before she apologizes and says, “Sorry it's just usually my person who handles this is not here..." The not Ada trailed off.

"You must be Astrid Wesker. I am..." I started but was cut off by the blonde woman

"Percival you are a nexo from southern California, and friends of Connor, dexter, and le Sserafim." The blonde woman says bluntly in her high-pitched voice

"That's not creepy at all." I sigh. "Well, I should probably get going. This was not enough excitement for me, and I am growing bored with this conversation." I say feeling uncomfortable.

"No, since you're here and a powerhouse maybe you can help me," Astrid said not taking the least subtle hint I could give. "I'll pay you good money too."

"Oh well, That works," I say as I follow The two ladies into the Elevator along with Connor, Sakura, and Yunjin. The ride is awkward.

"That's quite some psionic power you've got there Percival how does it work?"

I turn to Emma confused, "So you know who I am but not how my power works." I exclaim

"I can't be bothered to learn every Nexogebics power, especially one so extravagant as you," she said exacerbated

"Your tone indicated that was supposed to be insulting, however, I am choosing to take it as a compliment. To answer your question since you are too lazy to do basic research my power is channeling Primal Elements that have combined with spirits to make armor, and weapons and increase my abilities. I also have some legendary forms based around mythical creatures but if I use those forms my opponent is trouble," I explained, like she was five but hey this blonde lady lost her right to complain when she insulted me. we get to the penthouse overlooking the massive view of the city and we all sit down.

"So how much money are we talking for helping you, and what would I be doing for it?" I ask Astrid excited

"Well you'd be head of Supernatural security for the event and making sure no one gets any ideas. As for payment how does 21k sound for the three weeks of filming and an additional 9k for the preproduction, and POS production (flights travel, etc.)? Also, there is a chance for a bonus if you intermingle with the girls seamlessly to not cause us fuss but that will be based on your performance." Astrid says

"That's tempting, but can I ask why you're not asking your last guy to do this," I ask

"He and I had a falling out of sorts. He didn't like changes in my personal life, and so I made an excision." Astrid says with an extremely rigid tone

I sigh and say, "Fine deal but based on the way you said all of that weird stuff you should just apologize." I reply

"Wait why?" Astrid asks

"Your diction about the whole thing was weird which to me implies you were close and you're trying to use weird jargon to not fall apart about it. So, my take is you should reach out, and see if he is willing to help you." I reply

Astrid looks at me with Narrow eyes, before saying "You are extremely presumptuous you know that right?"

"Okay and. I am just calling it as I see it. you don't get a lot of friends in your life. Especially long ones so keep them close and keep them happy. You'll live longer that way." I said annoyed. The room was silent except for Sakura who was laughing.

"How is he worse than TJ." I heard Emma whisper as the meeting ended as we all discussed setup and various emergency plans.

I turn to her and say, "I don't believe in obstruction of my path I walk forward. Based on your interactions it sounds like TJ plays the game more, " With that I exit the office. the smell of the two ladies competing perfumes made me irritated. As I wait for the elevator I hear a voice I don't recognize. I turn to see an absolute bombshell of a young lady walk to me.

"Oh thank you." the young woman says. her blonde bounces around her neck in cascading waves of gold. to distract myself and not be caught staring I pointed to Sakura and company who were close behind.

"I was waiting for them but you are welcome....um what's your name?"I ask

"Oh, Ahin." the young lady says with a smile.

"Oh like the Momoland Member," I say. the girl chuckles and then looks at me with sparkling eyes.

"Yes that's me she says." my eyes widened at that because my limited recollection of Ahin had more in line with the girl next door and not a vivacious vixen.

"You seem surprised."

"Well, the last time I heard or saw Momoland y'all were cuter...not...this( I say gesturing to her.)

"Do you not like all of this?" Ahin questioned as she gestured to all of her actively alluring curves. I sense the game she's playing but I am too stupid to play.

So my response is not the most Euridite, "Look I wasn't expecting you to be an absolute smoke show or babe okay." I sputter out.

Yunjin, and Connor both laugh at my crash and burn while Ahin just smiles and says, "So you think I am pretty like this."

I turn around confused before replying, "Yeah absolutely." before I can make a further fool of myself the elevator opens and my friends drag me out of the Elevator, but not before Ahin gets my number to all our surprise.

we get back in Connor's car and Yunjin says, "Huh would have never thought she'd be into a black guy." Sakura and Connor look at her wonky. She's from the east coast so I just expect outta line stuff from her. We get back to the apartment when I get a call from an unknown number.

“Hi Ho it's Cival.” I greet

“Hey Cival it’s Ahin wanna come to

A party with me?” the other voice asks. I remain silent for a moment most parties bore me as they only really lead to debauchery and not much else.

“Come on it will be fun. Plus I'll make it worth your while,” Ahin says

“Deal,” I say with no hesitation. I could almost hear Ahin smile over the phone.

“Perfect” the young lady on the other phone purrs. “Send me your address and I'll pick you up in 15 minutes,” Ahin says giddily.

“Okay,” I reply.

Sakura smirks after the call ends at me. I shrug

“Oh does little Civy have a date?” Yunjin teases.

“Kkura I'm still older than you, but no Ahin wants me to probably be her “guard dog at a party.”

“Why do you say that? She was totally into you earlier today” Yunjin laughs.

“Well, little sis I read her body language and it was less. Oh, he's cute and more hmm he's built menacingly but is an awkward dork. Which is the same look Astrid gave me when she saw me after the fight. So based on that and other previous experiences, she's going to use me as her guard dog.”

“So why did you say yes?” Connor asks confused.

“Either there's going to be pretty girls, Food, or Excitement that I don't have to pay for. all I have to do is play the lost puppy role it's a win-win.” I elaborate

Yunjin’s eyes narrow before she says, “I can't tell if that is insanely smart or insanely dumb.”

“It's probably both,” I reply before taking a quick nap.

I wake up to my phone going off and I go down to the apartment lobby to meet Ahin. Upon entering the car I see Ahin is with a guy. The way they're attached makes me assume they are together (or en route to it) I sit in the back and the man who looks about Connor or Siyeon’s age says, “he looks a lot less goofy than you said earlier Ahin.”

Ahin looks back at me. I smile and wave hiding my confusion.

“Will there be food at this party by chance I'm starving?” I ask

The man nods and chuckles “Yes but you're going to need a suit for this party though. I nod and teleport back to my apartment to get the suit, shave, shower, etc, and put the suit on before I teleport back to the car to both of my companion's surprise.

“Neat trick,” Ahin says with a smirk. I chuckle and as we drive a bit more

Ahin noticed I was fidgeting with something and turned back to me

“Nervous," she says with a head tilt that is somewhere between flirty and friendly

I nod lightly, Ahin smiles pleasantly and reaches out her hand. I take it. "it will be fine. You will fit in, and if not you can just teleport out of there."

"You're right," I said which made Ahin smile. She took her hand back as she sat forward and she took my card.

Ahin looks at the card confused, and says as she turns back"Imperial Mega Dragon. Is this a part of a game or toy?"

"Not exactly" I respond and before she can ask more questions we arrive at the party which turns out to be more of a gala/ball. I walk in with Ahin, and her significant other and they guide me to… I squint and see that it's Kim Lip of ARTMS. Kim lip looks at me shyly but Ahin consoles her.

“See Lippie told you I'd find a nice piece of arm candy for you tonight,” Ahin says with reckless energy

“He is also foreign so he can't bore you too much.” I notice Ahin whisper before turning back to me and her date waving at the two of us. we follow the girls in. Kim Lip and I look at each other. As a fan of Loona, I knew that she spoke a lot through nonverbal communication. So it made sense that when I saw her stealing glances at me they were often accompanied by questioning looks.

“Aye don't worry it will be fine,” I tell her.

Zone Fighter Thoughts #01: "Destroy the Terror-Beast Missile!"

Hey all, welcome to rainofkaiju! A place where I plan to make semi regular posts of my toy photography, fan fiction and reviews/ musings of kaiju related media.

To start, I decided to make my first entry about an often forgotten about character: Zone Fighter, the Meteor Man.

Debuting in 1973 (after Godzilla Vs Megalon), it was Toho's attempt at capitalizing on the Ultraman phenomenon. Needless to say, it didn't catch on. There's plenty of other places 'round the web that offer more information, so I'll keep the intro short!

Im going to review/ react to each of the 26 episodes of this series. 2023 is his 50th anniversary afterall. And, I've never seen it. Alas, it will be in an order of my own preference, not exactly chronological.

It's an open secret that Toho included a few marquee names alongside the titular hero. Those being Gigan, King Ghidorah and of course, Godzilla! We'll cover the Zone Fighter solo episodes first, then the guest-starring ones last, leaving off on an epic note.

Join me on this journey as we get to witness a forgotten hero in his fansubbed glory, and hopefully convince Toho to bring him back. (Instead of just a Keychain. Lol.)

Let us begin!

We hear Godzilla in the first like 10 seconds! Albeit for the wrong monster... he uses Kong's later.

Awesome theme song, and a great moody score to boot.

An interesting concept of an alien refugee family saving the world in secret.

Some great Kamen Rider esque fight choreography in the human battles. Really digging Hikaru's moves.

This brings us the debut of....

"CANNON TERROR-BEAST" Red Spark!

And, well... meh. Sparkler noodle hands sadly aren't very impressive.

Cool night fight tho.

Zone Fighter himself is pretty neat. Also, a tad creepy with his lit-up eyes in the dark.

But, that's not all! We get the other monster in the episode...

"MAGNETIC TERROR-BEAST" Jikiro!

Now this is a cool kaiju. Unique mecha design, and certainly more memorable than Red Spark. Still doesn't stand a chance against Zone Fighter's Meteor Missiles however.

My fav bit in this entire episode was when Jikiro uses his magnetic pincer to grab hold of a commercial plane. Really good editing, very suspenseful the way the passengers are saved in the last second, as the plane gets yeeted into the night by Zone Fighter.

Never have I seen such a toyetic series shown in such a short amount of time. Jam-packed in 20 minutes. Space stations, spaceships, henshin devices, two kaiju, multiple transforming heroes, a flying fucking car, and the best ever:

ZOBOT!!!

a communicator, drone, weapon, this little guy can do it all. Must've been the coolest shit for kids in the 70's.

All in all, a fantastic start IMHO. One of the most entertaining first episodes from the showa Era of tokusatsu.

Good & Evil - Heroes

Welcome to Good & Evil: A Study of Heroes & Villains. I’m discussing different forms of heroic and villainous characters, different types of protagonists and antagonists, and providing examples of them each from various sources. We’re starting off this multi-part series with the most basic type of protagonist: the good ol’ fashioned, plain and simple Hero. It’s a cliche now to say that what makes a hero isn’t what’s on the outside, but what’s on the inside. Trite as this may be, it’s actually completely true: what marks a protagonist as a pure, simple, flat-out Hero is what ultimately marks any type of character for their classification. It’s all about their personality, their values, and how they stick to them. In a way, Heroes - in their truest and simplest form, disregarding all the different branches I’ll be covering later in this series - are role model figures.

The exact definition of a Hero has changed over the centuries; the Heroes of Greek Mythology are far removed from what many of us nowadays would consider a True Hero. However, one very constant thing is that the Heroes of any given time period or culture generally reflect the ideals and well-accepted values said culture or period represents. Heroes are characters who are meant to show us the best parts of humanity; they are characters whom the audience should aspire to be like, or at least wish they could be like. Modern Heroes are steadfast champions of the key virtues most societies recognize: it is not simply that they do good deeds, or have good intentions, but how incredibly determined they are to stick to those ideals, and how - no matter what gets thrown their way - they refuse to give in to darker temptations. It is the resilience of the Hero to their cause and their beliefs, beyond all else, that makes them who they are, and allows them to prove triumphant.

Arguably the quintessential hero of modern times is Superman. With almost 85 years of history behind the character, as of the time I’m writing this, and numerous reimaginings and adaptations presented in that time frame, the character has sometimes veered into other types (for example, the Injustice version is hardly a suitable example)…but at his core, in his truest form, Superman is undeniably an example of a pure Hero. It’s not that Superman goes out and does battle with alien monsters and mad scientists on a near-daily basis that makes him a Hero, but more the heart and soul of the man doing such things. Superman acts as a beacon of hope for his world, fighting not because it’s fun or because he seeks fame or glory, but simply because it’s the right thing to do. He doesn’t see his powers as something he should use to lord over mankind, but instead something he should use to help other people and fight to make the world a brighter and happier place. And he doesn’t necessarily do it because of some tragedy in his past that drives him on, or because he feels some twisted compulsion to keep going; it’s purely and simply the fact that he’s a good man who wants to do good things. And while he has been presented with numerous temptations and tribulations over his long career, he very rarely, if indeed ever, loses sight of those core and earnest beliefs. He fights for truth and justice, above all else, and hopes that by exemplifying those things, others will be encouraged to do the same.

Superheroes like Superman are not exclusive to Western Culture, nor even to comic books. Turning our attention to Japan, another great example of the pure hero in a similar medium is the titular character in the series “Kamen Rider Fourze.” The Kamen Rider franchise is a long-running series focusing on numerous heroic characters of numerous sorts; of the shows I’ve seen from the franchise so far, none has so exemplified the archetypal hero, in my mind, as Fourze. This Kamen Rider’s true name is Gentaro Kisaragi. Kisaragi is a High School student who ends up becoming a Kamen Rider on a quest to stop a horde of Zodiac-themed monsters, and uncover a mysterious conspiracy in his city. Again, though, it’s not Kisaragi’s battles that show his mettle as a hero, but who he is as a person. Kisaragi is an optimistic, energized, playful young man who earnestly and honestly believes there is good in every person, and wants to be friends with as many people as he possibly can be. While these qualities can get him into trouble, time and time again, they also prove to be his greatest strength. He never once gives up on the hope that he can be friends with someone, or that bad people can turn over a new leaf. Whenever he comes into contact with characters most people would just loathe and detest, his reaction is to try and find out what’s wrong with them, help them, and try to give them the friend he can tell they desperately need. Even in his final battle with the series’ main antagonist, while he’s doing physical battle with the big bad, he still shows kindness and even thanks them for every good thing he’s learned because of them. It’s this unwavering belief in something better, and this desire to help and be friendly to others, no matter what, that ultimately proves his heroic power.

Lest we forget, guys aren’t the only heroes out there: girls can be just as strong and powerful, as well as just as morally resilient. Sticking with Japan: a common style of anime is the “Magical Girl” series. Typically, these shows follow the same basic format: a group of teenaged heroines all gain magical or superhuman abilities in order to combat a bunch of tyrannical and destructive ne’er do wells. A great deal of glittery, brightly-colored action-based shenanigans ensue. I’m not a huge fan of Magical Girl shows - they’re just not my thing, generally speaking - but one series I DO like is “Smile! Pretty Cure” (known as “Glitter Force” in the English release). The main character of this series is Cure Happy, a.k.a. Hoshizora Miyuki. (Glitter Lucky, real name Emily, in Glitter Force; I’ll use the Japanese names for consistency.) Miyuki is a fangirl of fairy-tales, and despite all the dark stuff in them, what she loves about them is the hope she finds in them: no matter what sort of terrible things befall characters like Cinderella, Snow White, or Little Red Riding Hood, they always have a happy ever after. Miyuki’s quest to defeat the fairy-tale villains that are plaguing her world is an extension of that ideal: she champions all the good values and desires humans have, and even though she’s scared sometimes, she never lets her fear overcome her choices to help other people, nor her optimism for a happy ending for everyone. Once more, it’s that determined hope and optimism that makes her a Hero, as even when the odds seem against her, or the most logical course of action is to abandon those good things, she sticks to her integrity and empathy.

All of the characters I’ve mentioned so far fall under the idea of the “superhero” - a character with incredible abilities or powers doing great and noble things - but of course, you don’t need to be able to swing a sword or shoot lasers from your eyes to be a hero. Some characters fit this idea perfectly without having anything but their wits and a strong moral compass. Case in point, Belle from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. In the original story, Belle isn’t really a pure and simple Hero, but in the Disney film, that’s another matter. Belle is a human being, with all that entails: she has no particularly special capabilities, but what she does have are an iron will and a firm moral compass. She never lets anyone talk down to her, she’s not afraid to speak her mind in the face of incompetence or ignorance, but she also has a good heart and a kind spirit. She’s nice, but like anyone, she has her limits. It is because of Belle that the Beast is able to learn and eventually be saved, and it is through the Beast that Belle finds the acceptance she has yearned for: Belle is basically the same person at the end of the movie that she was at the start, her adventure is really finding someone who takes her as she is and doesn’t try to make her change. She sticks to her true inner self, and it is through her strength and compassion that she ultimately becomes the heroine of the tale.

Another example of a hero with no great powers is Charlie Bucket from “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” Charlie is a little different from most heroes, because he isn’t out to really save anyone or do anything grand or spectacular, in the long run. He’s just a little boy with a big heart, who is able to resist the dangers of life through a mixture of common sense and his virtuous philosophy. Charlie is a character whose heroic heart and stubborn hope earn him a reward, rather than being a character who actively fights or struggles for some great cause. He represents all the good things we wish our children could be, or who we wish we could have been, and is depicted as an underdog who earns greatness thanks to nothing more than his innocent spirit. This doesn’t make Charlie an uninteresting character, however, as he does have a full range of emotions and, being a kid, he does have to make some tough choices that he doesn’t necessarily WANT to make…but he knows it’s the right thing to do, and that allows him to win. The other children in the story are all characters who have come from a place where everything they’ve wanted, they’ve gotten, and this has left them corrupted; Charlie has had to learn the hard way there is more to life than material wants. He’s not totally flawless, and he is still a dynamic character in the journey he goes on, but it’s his inherent and constant goodness that stands out above all else.

That is ultimately the best way to describe a Hero: it’s not that a hero is a perfect person who never loses or never doubts. A Hero is simply someone who, even when they DO lose or DO start to doubt, never gives in to the darkness of themselves or their world. They eschew selfish desires in favor of what they perceive to be what’s right and good, and through a mixture of honesty and determination, they ultimately prevail. Heroes are the good things humanity should want to be or become. They act as a symbol that, regardless of what life throws one’s way, pluck and virtue can and will prevail. All forms of heroes stand as symbols of hope, and that includes the characters in their most basic forms: they are characters who stand up and say, to quote a famous movie, “there’s some good in this world, and it’s worth fighting for.”  Villains, meanwhile, respond by standing up and saying “don’t be so sure.” But that’s another story....

Kamen Rider BLACK RX, then. Where do I start?

Well... it doesn’t quite live up to the image of it I’d created in my head. And it definitely doesn’t live up to its predecessor. But... I think it’s a show doomed both by its reputation, and its status as a sequel to a show that really should not have had a sequel; and that if you can get past that - and certainly, not something everyone will be up to - I think it’s a show with a lot of its own merits.

Some of this is made easier by a lack of direct references to Black. There are the two Shadow Moon episodes, of course; and then the insanity-inducing scenario of using Whale Kaijin’s cave to give RX’s magic supercar a heart. But much of what fuels RX’s greatest heights is how it treats Kotaro as someone who has been a hero, a Kamen Rider before and is now finding a life beyond that - and thankfully, despite the actor, I found it easy enough to buy into that without the specificity of it being a Black sequel. Like, it’s a good Kamen Rider sequel show as long as you ignore it’s a sequel to Black? ... I’m probably not selling this very well, but trust me when I say that after a bit it’s something I found easy enough to slip into. The way Kotaro has found a family with the Saharas which isn’t the most solid family but it’s one that ultimately loves each other and him; the way he’s got a job now that he’s able to enjoy; the way he’s slowly meeting people and making friends. It’s all... it’s all very charming, and quite heartwarming.

The Crisis Empire, the invading alien force of reject Sentai villains and the hottest robot ever made; also ends up being a bit more interesting than it seems at first, even if it’s something subtle you sort of have to learn to look for. They have the usual power-grabs and personal interests at heart, with Bosgun especially going against orders for glory more often than not; but General Jark is... a very fascinating commander the further in you go. When faced with Colonel Dasmader in the latter half of the show picking apart his team’s efforts, he is fiercely defensive of not just his own position and reputation but also his subordinates; for seemingly no personal gain. Many many times he ends up flagrantly lying to and going against the supreme Emperor he’s supposed to be subservient to just to save the skin of his captains; at one point straight up killing Dasmader (he gets better) for Maribaron. It’s all of that combined with a more subtle dynamic of the captains getting along strangely well outside of their backstabbing that gives an endearing family angle to the group -- if only they were wise enough to realise just how important they are to each other.

There’s a lot of absolute nonsense, too, mind -- this is the first Kamen Rider series to REALLY have merchandising push its way into the show seemingly after Road Sector’s success last season; with all sorts of forms and weapons and vehicles thrown into RX’s arsenal. Thankfully I think most of it is handled quite well, with only the Rideron feeling truly superflouous -- the rest is in service of RX’s form changing which is used heavily since their debut till the last episode, serving not just to make fights more interesting but working their way into story beats as well. Robo Rider and Bio Rider are just straight up AWESOME designs at that; with aesthetics and colour schemes that Kamen Rider hadn’t delved into much before and a debut that speaks a fair bit to Kotaro’s character. Whoops, got a bit positive there; more negatives -- the Shadow Moon episodes are straight up bad, the last episode introduces a hamfisted environmental message which would be nice if it weren’t for completely contradicting the entire point of the Crisis Empire as an enemy and everything we’d learned about the Demon World and its people before; the Acrobatter being a revived Battle Hopper is something that seems nice at first but turns out to be very pointless, and also Gatezone didn’t get NEARLY enough screentime any time Gatezone isn’t on the screen you should be thinking “where is Gatezone” I want to be staring at his metal chest any chance I get

So! There are a fair few negatives to the show, but overall I think it’s got more than enough positives to balance it out. I don’t think it’s one of the greatest Showa Rider seasons or anything, but I had a great time here and I think if you’re willing to accept it on its own merit you’ll find something to like as well. It’s a pretty solid showing for Kamen Rider and certainly not the worst way the Showa Era could have ended.

If he did die... That would be a shame... then again, maybe the screen just cannot contain the combined charisma of two Junya Komatsu at the same time. (I know I'd probably have to pause the movie just to scream if Hiromi and Muramasa are in a scene together lol)

Not quite a scythe, not quite a pick-axe, but a freakish middleman, with what seemed to be orange fungus coating the metal just below the head. He did not move an inch when he was fired upon.

Absolutely no way i could pick a single favorite. But if we're doing for the big three franchises id say it's Kamen Rider Fourze & Ryuki, Bakuryu Sentai Abaranger, and Ultraman Orb.

Weirdest thing you’ve seen?

Discounting Donbrothers bc i don't even know where to begin there, it's gotta be the Jetman episode Glory To Emperor Tranza. That is maybe the wildest experience I've ever had watching any show ever. I feel like there are probably weirder Jetman eps but that one had me in hysterics.

Shin Megami Tensei V Broke My Heart

(hey! this is an old post i wrote on my medium!)

(This post contains spoilers for Shin Megami Tensei V)

Shin Megami Tensei V was supposed to be my game if the year.

Atlus’ newest numbered entry into the cult classic Shin Megami Tensei series was announced in 2017, and from the first showing of SMTIV:A’s version of Odin in all his vaguely Kamen Rider-esque glory rendered in Unreal 4 made me feel a level of excitement I hadn’t felt for a game in years.

I was ready to tell all my friends about it, to finally have a new game in this series to recommend to friends and strangers who may have been turned off by one of the previous entries or the various spin-offs (especially the Persona series post-3, with it’s long and slow openings before the true action began). It was coming off the heels of an internet that was getting tired of Pokemon, and no other developers were putting out this sort of “Befriending various creatures to take out a great evil” game in the triple A space. It was perfectly timed.

Every year without it was torture. In between the reveal and its release Atlus put out five games under the greater Shin Megami Tensei banner; a remake of the semi-mainline game Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey for the 3DS and four Persona games. Each new entry reminded me how much I wanted V.

But eventually it was released on November 12th, 2021; two days after my birthday. I was ecstatic. A new Shin Megami Tensei game? On my birthday? It was the perfect gift.

I played all of it down to almost every sidequest. It took 70 hours of tough battles and grinding. I picked my ending, and the credits rolled.The weight of what I had played washed over me.

I hated it.

There are positives, the combat is the standard fare; which means that it’s amazing, although while the essence system allowed for a wide breadth of customization; the specialization system left over from Apocalypse meant that the truly broken stuff (which means the truly fun stuff) was always just out of arms reach because your demon wasn’t “good at fire”. The soundtrack by Ryota Kozuka and Toshiki Konishi masterfully jumps from industrial to EDM to all manner of other genres so deftly that not even the random encounter theme got tiring after the copious amounts of battles you had to got through. It was beautiful, the Switch being pushed to its limits to make the world look appropriately post-apocalyptic and the demons as terrifying, epic or adorable as they possibly could.

But the graphical intensity also made the game run poorly, attacks that would kill multiple enemies would cause the game to freeze or chug for full seconds, or would make enemies or buildings pop in front of you while moving around the overworld.

Said overworld, for all it’s aesthetic brilliance, is a massive pain to move around in with the Nahobino sliding around like they’re on ice. The whole game my Switch felt like it was going to explode, or simply melt into goo if I played for more than twenty minutes. They had to patch a dungeon.

But the biggest disappointment for me was the writing. Shin Megami Tensei V aims to balance the “vibe” based open ended and thematic storytelling of the oft-memed Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne, while also maintaining the character driven plot of that defined Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse (or the Persona series, if you haven’t play IV:A). But while striving for both they failed to achieve either. There’s too much of the characters and “plot” for it to completely rest of vibes and suggestions but the characters and plot is so all threadbare and all over the place that there is nothing to latch on to.The game jumps from a “save your friends at school” to “actually go help the Japanese gods become the ruler of the world” to “Choose your ending” with such little variation that the beginning and the endings might as well not even exist.

Yuzuru, the game’s “Chaos” rep, is a cardboard cut out, who goes from “polite and friendly” to “polite and friendly and only a little upset” if you don’t side with him. His sister appears once at the beginning, then disappears with new demon and other wasted character Konshu to be part of a late game sidequest. Sahori and Tao both die in the aforementioned “save the school” plot with Sahori never coming back, and Tao returning as another character who only appears at the end, then leaves if you pick the one ending she doesn’t like. Aogami, who is this games attempt at IV:A’s Dagda, has a major plot point of trying to rediscover who is he is. You are told by the president of Bethel midway through the game to no fanfare or drama. Aogami isn’t even there. This wasted potential goes on for every major character, sans Dazai, who might be the most interesting take on a Law protagonist in the entire series though it isn’t worth much when he’s surrounded by nothing.

The choices the series is so well known for had basically no effect on the overall plot, there was no pushback for suddenly changing from one alignment to the other at the final choice. Hell, the fact that the ultimate decision of your ending was one choice in the final dungeon almost felt like an insult. It could’ve been so much more, but it wasn’t.

I thought I was dreaming. The game was getting good reviews! And was selling well! It was what I wanted! Why didn’t I like it?

I don’t know. I’ve been thinking about it for three whole months and I still can’t figure it out. Maybe I had built up too many expectations on in my head that no game could deliver. Maybe the people at Atlus ran out of time, leaving a lot of the plot unfinished just to get it out. Maybe they will release an updated version in a few years. Maybe after years and years of playing games, both from this series and others in the same genre, I have finally stopped wanting to play JRPG’s and have gotten so used to their cliche’s that I can’t find them fun anymore.

I hope that last part isn’t true. I want to be able to get just as excited for any game as I did for this so many years ago, and I hope that no matter how long I wait, the games that come out of it are worth it. And I still hope for more Shin Megami Tensei in the future just entries that are better than this, because I know it can be better.(hey! you can also read this on my medium!

Small suggestion: instead of using Descendents to do the Kamen Rider story, you should use Ever After High. The world is more interesting (since it’s not trapped by Disney’ rules) and the Royals and Rebels conflict seems to fit.

I did consider that, actually. However, I decided against it because I felt Descendents had a better tone for Kamen Rider Ryuki over Ever After High.

Descendents has a more fitting tone, in my opinion, because of the way it's set up. Specifically for the next generation after their parents' stories ended.

The people on the Isle were obviously going through poverty. Old worn-out clothes, dirty streets, and gang violence if there were more gangs other than Uma and Mal's crew. For the imprisoned villains' kids. There is also the mental and physical abuse their parents use on them. This can open a wide array of reasons that the next generation of people there would join the Rider Fight. This is especially true if the curse keeping the villains alive and imprisoned only works on THEM and NOT their children.

These reasons can include

Power and riches.

Revenge against Auradon, Belle and Adam, the ones who beat their parents, etc.

Wanting to finally gain their parents' love and affection.

Wanting to show how their parents that they were washed up, and it was time they learned who the new villains were.

Wanting to survive.

Wanting to get the family members they care about off the Isle and to safety.

Having gone insane from their time on the Isle and just wanting to destroy everything.

Wanting to make the Isle a better place for at least those they care about or those that are under their protection.

Wanting to bring back a dead loved one who wasn't protected by the immortal curse.

Wanting to wish the Isle never existed. After all, it's better not to exist than to exist only to suffer.

Wanting to take the barrier surrounding the Isle down and free everyone from their imprisonment.

Conversely, the children of Auradon lived much better lives. Especially the royal families. This doesn't mean that they grow up to be heroes or good like their parents. Or that their parents aged to be the same people they were in their stories.

Take Queen Leah and Audrey. Queen Leah is abusive, putting a lot of pressure on Audrey to be the best. She wanted Audrey to marry other royalty and become even wealthier. In the third movie, Leah even uses a line like “Your mother could keep a prince in her sleep.”

Audrey herself is basically the mean girl at school. She's vain, demanding, and demeaning. She can be seen bullying Jane, the daughter of the Fairy Godmother. She had no hesitation in replacing Ben with Chad in the first movie. Of course, this is likely due to at least her grandmother's influence. But back on track.

These are just two examples of how you have to remember these aren't the same stories. They're what came after the happily ever after. I'm not saying I'll make all of the deck wielders on the Auradon side like this. But there will be a couple of people that have desires below the surface that aren't quite heroic.

Their reasons for joining the fight can be.

Wanting to make sure the villains stay trapped on the Isle.

Not wanting the wish to fall into the wrong hands.

Wanting to make the world a better place.

Reviving or saving a loved one.

Using the deck to become a superhero without thinking of the consequences.

Wanting power, riches, and glory.

Wanting to prove they're the best.

Treating it as a game.

Using it to finally follow their secret fantasy of becoming a villain.

Wanting to use the power against those that crossed them.

What I'm getting at is these aren't the old stories. This is a new story being created after the older generation's happily ever afters. Meaning that old heroes can become villains and old villains can become heroes. People you grew up with revealing a hidden side of them you didn't know about. You don't know who's who or what side they're really on anymore. That's a tone I think can fit better with Kamen Rider Ryuki.

For me, Kamen Rider Ryuki is this suspenseful show that'll keep you on the edge of your seat. The tone makes it feel like their cast of riders could be confronted, ambushed, betrayed, and killed at any moment. Whether it is by another Rider or by a Mirror Monster.

That's why I picked Descendents over Ever After High. Now, if I had chosen to go with the American adaptation of the series Dragon Knight. Then I think I would have gone with Ever After High because it shows more potential than Descendents with that show to me.
