Communication between the SR 71 and KC 135Q had to be secure. Our enemies would listen in vain, trying to find their location and their next rendezvous with a tanker. The RSO had a modular/Demodular modem control panel. He used a five digit code that he punched in to secure communications.
The tanker was equipped with the same UHF radio that had the correct mission code and address number. The KC 135Q could receive the SR 71 range as well. The tankers were always a welcome site to the SR 71 crew. Often before refueling the cockpit would get rather warm. When the new fuel was taken on there was a cooling That took place. The fuel was -30°. The tankers could give life-saving information to the crewmembers by being able to look at the airplane and notice if something was wrong. An example is they once noticed #960 that the engine was on fire! The SR 71 pilot quickly found a place to land. Thank you to all of the support team that backed the SR 71. There are so many to mention. The Tanker Crewmembers, PSD, The mechanics which were the best in the Air Force, the people who rushed to get the film out of the SR 71 and the radar information, to name a few. It was truly a team effort.
