English trifle
Here below is what it used to look like - filled with jelly and tiny coloured dots called 'hundreds and thousands'.
Tumblr media
Now (and above in individual portions) is my version of this wonderful layered dessert.
It’s made from sponge finger biscuits soaked in sherry, home made custard, fresh berries and whipped cream. That’s it.

Bavarian Inn Co-Founder, Dorothy Zehnder, named to Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame 2020 Class added to Google Docs
Bavarian Inn Co-Founder, Dorothy Zehnder, named to Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame 2020 Class
Frankenmuth, MI  (RestaurantNews.com)  The matriarch of the Bavarian Inn’s Zehnder family, Dorothy Zehnder, has been named a 2020 inductee into the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame.
The 98-year-young Zehnder is co-founder and co-owner of Frankenmuth’s Bavarian Inn and the many business operations under that name. A far-reaching enterprise, this includes Bavarian Inn Restaurant and Castle Shops, Covered Bridge Gift Shop, Frankenmuth River Place Shops, Frankenmuth Gift Shops Inc., Bavarian Inn Lodge and a specialty line of food products. At full employment, there are approximately 1,000 team members and more than 900,000 meals served annually.
Zehnder continues to work at the restaurant with no plans to retire. She and her late husband William “Tiny” Zehnder have 3 children, 10 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. Currently there are nine family members in leadership roles in various business operations.
The author of three cookbooks, Zehnder first published “Cookies & Bars,” a collection of desserts used at the Bavarian Inn and in her home. Then in 2011, she published “Come Cook with Me,” an 80-year collection of recipes, wisdom and stories from her life as the Bavarian Inn’s much beloved matriarch. With the success of these, she wrote another cookbook in 2014, “From My Kitchen to Yours,” featuring 195 handpicked family favorite recipes from her vast 1,000 plus personal collection.
During her 83 years in business, Zehnder has received numerous awards. Later this year she is being recognized with the Saginaw Chamber’s Lifetime Community Service Award.
“Our entire family is thrilled for Dorothy to be honored this way,” said daughter Judy Zehnder Keller. “As our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother she means so much to our family, to the entire Frankenmuth community and to everyone throughout the state of Michigan. It is a well-deserved recognition.”
Zehnder, along with five other new nominees, will be honored at a ceremony on Oct. 15, in Lansing.  The other nominees include: Najah Bazzy, RN, an internationally recognized healer, humanitarian and interfaith leader and founder of Zaman International. Dr. Glenda Price, first African American president of Marygrove College and to serve as the national president of the American Society for Medical Technology. Martha Teichner a CBS Sunday Morning correspondent since 1993, earning multiple national awards including 10 Emmy Awards. Liz Jackson was a founding member and officer of the Trade Union Leadership Council, a nationally recognized organization credited with advancing black political development within the UAW. Ruth Westbrook was part of NASA’s Apollo 11 project, where she wrote a program for all the steps used to get a man to the moon and back and see how long it took in real time to be completed. Essentially, Ruth was one of the “Human Math Computers” depicted in the movie “Hidden Figures.”
Established in 1983, the Women’s Hall of Fame is located in downtown Lansing. Today the hall of fame, which includes 333 inductees, is organized and managed through Michigan Women Forward (MWF), an organization founded in 1986 to encourage women to play an active role in philanthropy and governance.
“Today’s strong women can learn so much by studying the paths of those who came before us,” said Carolyn Cassin, president and CEO, Michigan Women Forward.  “These amazing honorees have conquered so many obstacles and accomplished so much throughout their lives.  We are proud to salute them and want to be sure their stories are told.”

No guests, but an amazing tablecloth!
Actually it’s not a tablecloth at all.  It’s an embroidered  Spanish shawl that was given to me by my godmother on our wedding day.  I have worn it once or twice and used it to cover the table at the book launch of my novel The Camel Trail. Find out more here.
One reason I mention this part fact/part fiction book is that it is on special offer on Amazon Kindle - only £2.  The other reason is that it won a World Gourmand Award for Best Food Literature book in the year it was published.
Since then I have moved on from publishing and am now working on my Food Channel on YouTube, called Kitchen Games. The inspiration for the name came from another of my books Lookit Cookit - kitchen games for curious children.  You can also pick up an inexpensive copy of this from Amazon.

Blueberry pancakes
Here is one of my favourite winter breakfasts: pancakes.  The picture below shows a chequerboard of blue and black berries. The easiest to get at this time of year is a pack of the frequently imported large plump blueberries. The recipe comes from my book for children Lookit Cookit - Kitchen Games for Curious Children.  You can find it here.
The mixture is very simple: flour, baking powder, sugar, an egg and milk.
Tumblr media
Unlike more complicated pancake recipes, in this one you don’t need to rest the batter - it can be cooked straight away.
Tumblr media
It’s easy to flip them over, adding blueberries to some and leaving the rest plain.

To see the whole process - which takes minutes - check out my You Tube video from my Channel Judy Jackson Kitchen games.

Fijuelas - a Portuguese dessert
Today is the most important day in the Jewish calendar: the Day of Atonement. On this day we don’t eat or drink for 24 hours, spending the day in prayer and contemplation.
To break the fast in the evening Sephardi Jews (in my case from Spain and Portugal) often choose a traditional very sweet dessert. Fijuelas are pieces of dough, rolled out very thin and coiled as they fry in oil.  They are served cold with a syrup - either vanilla or cinnamon flavoured.
You can see all the details of how to make them on my You Tube Channel:  Judy Jackson Kitchen Games.
For details of the actual recipe, please go to ‘About me’ on my website:

Gravlax
Before sushi came along, the British were wary of raw fish. Yet for some time, the more adventurous have been enjoying gravlax: raw, cured salmon.
This is the latest video on my You Tube channel, Kitchen Games, and you can find it here.
Click on the link and you will see it in detail.
It’s a short one - about 5 mins, with the actual preparation taking half that time - but there is something to know, and that is that you need to start the curing 3 days in advance.
Tumblr media
When we start inviting a friend to our home, this might be a good thing to start with. A glass of chilled Prosecco and slices of delicious gravlax with zenapsauce.
Tumblr media
For those of you who are familiar with the concept, here is the exact recipe.

Not too late to deal with your too big turkey
Go to my You Tube channel Judy Jackson Kitchen Games and look for Talk About Turkey No. 1. Find it here
You’ll  find the first of 3 videos telling you what to do if you have ordered a bird that is MUCH TOO LARGE. You will learn the secret of what to do with all that breast meat you can’t possibly eat in one meal.
The answer is to remove half the breast before roasting and to put the stuffing in its place. I give the details in three videos.
The first video will explain what I’m going to do.  You can see the second one Talk about Turkey No. 2. here and the third part Talk about Turkey No. 3 here.
(Click back to Tumblr and follow my links (’here’) if you have any difficulty finding the next video.)
I have to tell you that I made these videos a few weeks ago, when life in the UK was uncertain. Since the last couple of days we have heard that London will be in Tier Four, meaning there will be no mixing of families for the planned five days. Instead each household will have to celebrate on their own.  I hope you all have the Christmas you will enjoy, even if it is not the Christmas you planned.
Bon appetit.  Enjoy.
