"THEFT OF $20,000 GETS M'INTOSH A FOUR-YEAR TERM," Toronto Star. June 5, 1912. Page 1 & 16. --- Joseph Radnor, a Chauffeur Who Injured Woman, Given Eight Months. ---- WIFE WEPT BITTERLY AS SHE HEARD IT --- James Cordwell, Aged Wife-Beater, Sent to the Prison Farm for Six Months. --- SENTENCES IN THE SESSIONS --- Two Men Go to Jail for Assaults Arising Out of Strike Troubles. ---
Edward Elmer Mcintosh, theft, two cases, four years in Kingston.
Joseph Radnor, criminal negligence, eight months in Central.
James Cordwell, wounding with intent to maim, six months in Central Prison.
Edward Humphries. common assault, $10 or one month.
George Miles, theft, one month.
Samuel Kruger, wounding with intent to maim, two monthns.
Louis Becker and Samuel Lidimbery, assault, one month: $25 or one month, respectively.
George McAlynn, common assault. two months. Joseph Smith, four months.
Eveline Mains, theft, two cases, 30 days.
Louis Goodman, receiving stolen goods, suspended sentence.
Estella Smith, forgery, false pretences, and theft, remanded till September.
William Menary, false pretences, suspended sentence.
Robert Patterson, theft, suspended sentence.
Mary Blake, theft and faise pretences, suspended sentence.
Elizabeth Eades, theft, suspended sentence.
Dennis McCartney, common assault, suspended sentence.
Eight Months for Chauffeur. "Joseph Radnor, you were coming down University avenue in a reckless manner at a quarter to eight in the morning, under the influence of liquor, and you ran into a hard working woman, on her way to her day's work. It was gross criminal negligence, and I intend to make an example of you as a warning to others. I am going to administer a sentence to you that will not only be a punishment to you, but will warn others that this sort of thing is not to be done."
With this rebuke Judge Denton sentenced Joseph Radnor, the young fellow who ran down Mary Hayden at the corner of University avenue with, his automobile, to serve eight months in Central Prison, when he came up in the Sessions this morning as the first of eighteen on whom sentence was to be passed as the result of their convictions in the May Seasons Court.
"I want to speak to the woman who was injured," said his Honor, when Radnor entered the prisoners' box, and Mrs. Hayden was called.
"Has Radnor paid you anything? Have you received any recompense?" asked the judge.
"I have not received one cent," she answered.
"How are you now?"
"I am not able to go to work yet, and my head still bothers me."
Her doctor's bill had not even been paid, she declared.
"That's all I want to hear," said his Honor, and then he passed sentence.
Radnor's wife left the court room crying bitterly.
Four Years for Theft. Elmer Edward Mcintosh, [pictured] who pleaded guilty to the theft of four thousand $5 Traders Bank bills, from an express car on its way from Ottawa to Toronto, at his trial, was sentenced to four years in Kingston penitentiary.
Mcintosh was a brakeman on the train, and in some way broke into the safe of the Dominion Express car, which was doubly locked. Just how he did it is likely to always remain a mystery.
The theft was in February, 1910. Mcintosh escaped to the States, and went into business as a gentleman farmer. In making his escape he also stole an automobile, which resulted in a second charge against him.
Mr. W. A. Henderson put out up up a plea for leniency on the ground that his pleading guilty had saved the expense of a trial, which would have lasted two days. This was also true in the case of the automobile.
"I persuaded him to plead guilty because he could not explain the action in any way." said Mr. Henderson
"Have you anything to say? his Honor asked the prisoner.
"No, sir."
"This is a very serious offence," said his Honor, and Mcintosh walked out with a half smile on his face.
To Jail for Assault. Louis Becker, who, with Saul Zidenberg. was convicted of assault in connection with the tailors strike, was given one month in jail, and the latter was given the same, but with the option of a fine of $25.
George Miles, formerly a brakesman, who stole a box of clothing that was being shipped to Muskoka, went to jail for one month.
"This is your first offence, but it is too serious to pass over," said his Honor.
Because of Mother's Plea. George McAlynn and Joseph Smith got two and four months respectively for the assault on Charles Scarrett, an east end shoe repairer.
Owing to the pleas of his mother, Dennis McCarthy was let off on suspended sentence. He was the third member of the party she promised that he would have nothing more to do with the east end gang.
Samuel Kauger, who assaulted an Eaton employe during the tailors Stat, got two months.
Attacked His Wife. James Cordwell, the aged east-end grocer who assaulted his elderly wife first with a stick, then a claw hammer and finally a box opener, goes to Central for six months.
"It is unfortunate that at your age of life such thing should happen," Judge Denton told him. "You seem to be math of bad temper and, although there was provocation, it did not justify your act. You were fortunate in not being charged with murder. If you were a younger man the sentence would have been much longer."
Judge Denton said that he would recommend that the warden of Central send the elderly prisoner to the Guelph prison farm.
Gave Him a Chance. Louis Goodman, who in 1905 with his brother received stolen property, was allowed to go on suspended sentence.
"Yours is the most peculiar саse," said his Honor. "Your brother Charles served his term, but you went to the United States. For the past few years you have led a good life there and have a wife and three children. I will try an experiment in your case stretch a point, and let you go in the hope that you will never come into a criminal court again."
Mr. T. C. Robinette, K.C., asked for a further adjournment of a week in the case of Emma Knight, charged with bigamy, who was tried by Judge Denton without a jury, a week ago.
"The case is as plain as A. B. C. to me," said his Honor, "but I will remand her for a week if you wish."
Mr. Robinette claims the case is outlawed because she didn't hear from her first husband for seven years.
[McIntosh was 25 years old. He was convict #F-403 at Kingston Penitentiary. He worked in the tailor shop. He was reported twice, once in 1913 and again in 1915, for impertinent language toward guards. He lost remission in both cases. He was released in early 1916.]

------------------------------
As I mentioned in one of the earlier posts, I’ve long since lost track of which year a lot of these early collections were made.  Judging by the hand-drawn cover art, this one might well be from a previous year, but I figured that it’s a good idea to spread out these holiday-jazz compilations. The main source for this collection, and the album for which it is named, is 1993’s Swing Ye Noel by the Ritz-Carlton Orchestra, a contemporary big band.  Very creative and occasionally even funky arrangements of several Christmas classics.
Other highlights, in a generally swing-ish way, include: the very ambitious arrangement of ‘The Nutcracker Suite’ by Les Brown and His Band of Renown, along with their much-earlier take on “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers”; the driving “Sleigh Ride” by Glenn Miller alumnus Tex Beneke and the lyrically playful (Apparently, if you’re good, Santa will bring you Hedy Lamarr) version of “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town” by the great Johnny Mercer with help from the Pied Pipers.  Several of the other tracks have appeared on my earlier collections, so I guess I was running short of new material at the time.  Man-of-a-thousand-voices Mel Blanc closes out the set with an appropriately cartoony “Yah, Das Ist Ein Christmas Tree”.
The cover art, as mentioned, was hand-drawn, with the lettering copied from a book of classic calligraphy.  I do kind of like the way the instruments are used as letters.

Let’s Talk Dancing with the Stars Blog Post #4
Since The Bachelorette has stopped premiering and both girls seem to have found their happy ending (Gabby with Erich & Rachael with her own self love), I have decided to talk to you guys about another great show…
Dancing with the Stars!
I am such a huge fan of this show, and I was so excited when I found out former Bachelorette Gabby Windey was going to be on this upcoming season. So let me give you the rundown on how Dancing with the Stars works if you haven't watched it yet.
Dancing with the Stars consists of 15 professional dancers and 15 celebrity dancers. The show first premiered on ABC in 2005 and has been a huge hit for 30 seasons now. Out of these professional dancers, some of them come in brand new and some dancers have been there since the show started! Each week, the dancing duos get assigned a specific category of dance (ex: Ramba, Quick step) and follow the theme night that happens every week as well.
This season I want to follow along with you guys and keep you updated on the great dances that these pro/celebrity duos create together! This season consists of:
-Gabby Windey dancing with professional Val Chmerkovskiy
-Charli D’Amelio dancing with professional Mark Ballas
-Heidi D’Amelio dancing with professional Artem Chigvintsev
-Wayne Brady dancing with professional Witney Carson
-Jordin Sparks dancing with professional Brandon Armstrong
-Joseph Baena dancing with professional Daniella Karagach
-Selma Blair dancing with professional Sasha Farber
-Sam Champion dancing with professional Cheryl Burke
-Jessie James Decker dancing with professional Alan Berston
-Trevor Donovan dancing with professional Emma Slater
-Daniel Durant dancing with professional Britt Stewart
-Teresa Giudice dancing with professional Pasha Kovalev
-Vinny Guadagnino dancing with professional Koko Iwasaki
-Cheryl Ladd dancing with professional Louis Van Amstel
-Jason Lewis dancing with professional Peta Murgatroyd
-Shangela dancing with professional Gleb Savchenko
The first episode started with a lot of energy and fun in the ballroom. Host Tyra Banks has been on the show since Season 29 with co-host Alfonso Ribeiro who is a former actor and winner of Season 19 of DWTS. Tyra is the main host on the dance floor while Alfonso is up top of the ballroom with the dancers while they collect their scores from the judges.
Judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tomioli, Derek Hough, and head judge Len Goodman are returning judges from past seasons. Carrie Ann Inaba is a Dancer and Choreographer, and Bruno Tomioli is a Film, Music Video, and Theatre Choreographer. Derek Hough is an Emmy winning Choreographer and Six-Time DWTS Champion ,while head judge Len Goodman is a Professional Ballroom Judge. Along with the 0-10 numbers each judge can give, the viewers also have their say in voting to control the ending elimination. Season 31 is now streaming for the first time this year on Disney+.
On premiere week we got to learn the background of all of the celebrity dancers that were featured on this new season. The premiers theme was focused on the celebrities favorite party song to get down to.
Our girl Gabby Windey with partner Val danced the jive to her favorite song “As it Was” by Harry Styles. They ended with the third highest score of 28/40. Not too bad for week one as the judges score everyone pretty low on night one. Linked below will be their jive from night one.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsWg8clCqGc
Tik Tok star Charli D’Amelio ended the night in first place after dancing the Cha-Cha with partner Mark Ballas. They danced to “Savage” by Megan Thee Stallion and ended with the top score of the night at 32/40. I will link Charli’s night one winning dance down below!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PyV3kZaduwk
In second place was celebrity Actor and Multiple Emmy Award-winning and Grammy Award- nominated Wayne Brady. They received the first “8” of the night from judge Bruno Tomioli! Wayne Brady and partner Witney Carson danced a Cha-Cha to “She’s A Bad Mama Jama” by Carl Carlton. The total judges scored a total of 29/40. Linked down below will be the duo's awesome Cha-Cha!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aDRcNTJi4k
After all 15 couples do their dance and get scored, the show ends with a couple going home on night one. The judges were super tight with scoring on night one with most judges handing out “5’s” for most couples. This was a very low scoring night for most couples! Star Jason Lewis, who is well-known for his role in “Sex and the City” was the first celebrity star who was kicked off the show!
Tune in next week so we can recap week 2 of Dancing with the Stars together!

Tszyu ignores Darkens chess advice
The work was non-stop from the start of the competition to its early end. Joe Dryden’s father said in the lead-up to this, “The more you hit him, the more progress he gets. The more I love him.” This has been proven. Dryden struck countless blows to the body and head but never back down, throwing blows until his defender decided he couldn’t take any more, Darkon shot a lot of high-quality shots on his own, but he achieved a lot.attributed to him:No Linet Boxing Despite being a true local – he’s from Mayfield – Dryden was made to feel weird in more ways than one. The venue is named after his opponent, with the Tszyu family now boasting a combined record of 11 wins from as many matches (Nikita winning twice, Tim two and Kostya seven) in Steel City. Meanwhile, Sam Goodman makes a strong case to be considered the most promising Australian boxer without the title Tszyu. Fighting just moments before Nikita Tszyu entered the ring, Goodman maintained his undefeated record with a unanimous victory over Jason Cooper for the WBO Oriental superweight title. The recent victory, and the higher rating that will likely come with it, could see him fulfill his challenging ambition to win a world title within 18 months if he continues on his winning path. Goodman described Cooper (17-4-1) as a spoiler up front, but the underdog was unable to spoil the party for “The Mad Bunch,” a traveling crowd of fans who follow their man across the country on a career journey. Cooper experienced swelling in his eye early in the procedures, but punched him in pain, taking several clean blows of his own. However, Goodman was never in trouble and the judges were on his side with a 99-91, 99-91, 100-90 decision. “He’s really tough,” Goodman said of his opponent, “and give him full credit.” “In some places [my performance] It was very good, it’s all part of the learning process on the way to the top.” The performance was impressive enough to earn a trip to Las Vegas. Promoters No Limit then announced that Goodman would be invited to be on the bottom card to contest Tim Tszyu’s undisputed World Championship title against Jeremy Charlo on January 28. “‘Mad Punch’ is going anywhere, and now we’re going to Vegas,” Goodman said to a standing ovation from his personal team. It was all part of the fist festival; 20 fights over 10 hours. There was the obligatory soccer player on the bottom card, this time Ritchie Fauso, the seven-footballer of the Premier League. However, the premiership-winning prop was no match for Lewis Marsters, as the towel was thrown in before the bell saved him in the third round. Other highlights include Louis-trained Ella Butt who named Zoe Butorak and Cody Pekin, who posted a surprise by deciding to split the points on Lachey Higgins. On This Day in 1960 – Caryl Chessman, the ‘Red Light Bandit,’ enters San Quentin’s ‘smokehouse.’
Seldom has a condemned convict made the cover of Time magazine, an honour usually reserved for more famous and less notorious individuals, but Caryl Whittier Chessman was no ordinary convict. Whether he really was California’s notorious ‘Red Light Bandit’ is still debated today, decades after he entered the gas chamber at San Quentin. What could never be disputed is that he was no run-of-the-mill…

Down the ‘Hameau de la reine’ Wikipedia rabbit hole...
aka: “How I procrastinated on doing other things by hyperfixating on a paragraph on Wikipedia for 2 weeks.”
So, if you’ve ever wandered over to the Wikipedia page for the Hameau de la Reine, you’ve probably noticed that it contains the familiar “she dressed as a shepherdess and masqueraded herself as a peasant” myth.
This particular paragraph on the Wikipedia page stands out because it has been used repeatedly on various social sites (twitter, reddit, etc) and in some cases garners hundreds or even thousands of comments about the behavior the article is attributing to her:
“While still in power, Marie Antoinette enjoyed acting as a tableau vivant, as if she were part of a painting. She brought her idyllic, picturesque village to life by stocking the barn with animals, and bringing in "simple" people, such as milkmaids and herdsmen, to act like residents of the Hamlet. Marie Antoinette would stroll around her perfect world in simple peasants' garb with her children, part of an idealized Nature. Her closest friends joined her in her ornamental village, where they also enjoyed pretending to live a simple life. Their isolation at the Hameau caused suspicion among the French people. Already resentful of Marie Antoinette for her profligate spending in times of economic depression, the secrecy surrounding her life of amusement led to suspected hedonism and scandal.(1)”
The last sentence is the only one footnoted in this entire paragraph, and I was curious as to what exactly was being said in the book used as evidence for this particular section. The book in question, according to the Wikipedia notes, is: Pérouse de Montclos, Jean-Marie. Versailles. Trans. John Goodman. Paris: Abbeville, 1991
I couldn’t find a digital version (not surprising for a coffee table book published in 1991!) so I found a used copy for $4 on ebay, snapped it up, and received my copy in the mail this morning.
The book only contains 2 short paragraphs about Marie Antoinette, plus a quote from a 19th century book.
Is the information footnoted present in the book? Yes! And no. And the book should definitely not be used as a footnote for this information.
Placing the rest of this under a Keep Reading for people on the dashboard! This got really long and is just me rambling about my findings, tbh.
Click “Keep Reading” to... Keep Reading!
First: Nowhere in the book do they mention anything resembling “already resentful of Marie Antoinette for her profligate spending in times of economic depression, the secrecy surrounding her life of amusement led to suspected hedonism and scandal.” The information is true--the hameau’s secrecy and Marie Antoinette’s visible spending did lead to widespread rumors. It’s just not mentioned in this book.
But now for the meatier element...
Some (but not all) of the information about ‘life at the hameau’ does actually come from this book.... but using the book as a basis for a description of life at the hameau (and footnoting this book for it) is misleading at best.
The text from the author of ‘Versailles’ actually argues against the traditional view of the hameau as a faux village. The text written by the author says that “this complex has acquired the dubious reputation of being a kind of operetta version of a small village .... the buildings intended for the queen’s use must be judged as precious and artificial, for behind their rustic exteriors were rooms worthy of the small Trianon. But the service buildings and working farm were more accurately conceived than has generally been realized.”
and
“[The hameau] is widely believed to have been  a kind of operetta version of a small village, but this reputation is unwarranted...”
The “lifestyle” information from Wikipedia is not taken from the book itself, meaning the author’s text. It’s actually derived from a quote blurb included above a photograph. The quote was translated from ‘Souvenirs d'un médecin de Paris,’ 1847 by François Louis Poumies De La Siboutie.
Reproduced here:
Tumblr media
Siboutie, born in 1793, was a well-respected physician who--after breaking his knee, causing him to reflect on his breakneck pace of working--decided to travel extensively, keep a journal with notes, and then write memoirs based on his experiences.
His book contains countless anecdotes about history, his travels, and experiences etc. He is one of the many people during this time period to publish memoirs relating extensively to the Revolution. He relates many anecdotes about seeking out various people who played roles, large and small, in the final years of the ancien regime and subsequent revolution. He claims to talk to men who tried to save Robespierre, a woman who witnessed Marie Antoinette’s execution, and even claimed to visit Zamor and witness the man burst into tears when he was reminded of testifying against Madame du Barry.
Whether these anecdotes are true or not is... well, inconclusive. Siboutie was known to be a seeker of people with notoriety and fame, and he donated an extensive collection of autographs to the Archives nationales before his death, sparking the response that he must have known ‘many little secrets.’ It’s not impossible to believe that someone who specifically admitted to wanting to be around famous figures might seek them out and get enough information for his anecdotes.
However, in regards to the hameau description: Siboutie was not a historian and was merely relating anecdotes he’d heard about the hameau. He was not an eyewitness to life at the hameau and he wasn’t even quoting a conversation someone had with him about the hameau, as he does for other anecdotes. He merely relates what seems to be the popular image of the hameau at the time. By 1847, then, we can see the “faux peasant” style myth is already in full swing.
(Note: He also wrote that in 1847, the hameau was in a state of ‘complete degradation’ and that ‘in a few years, all these houses will have disappeared, and only the memory will remain.’ Thank goodness for the restoration work that was done within the next decade or so.)
I also noticed that the text from the ‘Versailles’ author actually directly contradicts Siboutie’s included quote--not just in the assertion that the traditional view of the hameau needs to be reevaluated, but dismissing the notion of the 19th century names of the buildings which Siboutie uses:
“In assessing the accuracy of this view, we should begin by jettisoning the names assigned to these structures in the ninteenth century (lord’s house, mayor’s house, vicarage, etc)...”
Using a quote from Siboutie (someone relating anecdotes in 1846 and not even claiming to have heard this information from a contemporary) as evidence for anything about the real activities of the hameau is insufficient for basic scholarship.
The fact that the footnote used to source the information in the Wikipedia paragraph leads to a book which 1) does not contain author-derived text confirming the information and 2) directly contradicts the quote blurb used as the basis for the Wikipedia paragraph is a frustrating example of why it’s important not to base what you know on Wikipedia articles--even if they’re sourced. If something seems off, research the sources. You’d be surprised at what you might find. (Or at what you might buy, on impulse, on ebay just to find out what was going on with a Wikipedia footnote.)
Fittingly enough, one of the links provided for more information at the bottom of the Wikipedia page leads to the official Chateau de Versailles description of the hameau:
“Contrary to the deeply-entrenched public image of Marie-Antoinette, the queen and her entourage did not “play at being farmers” amidst these bucolic surroundings, complete with sheep trussed up in ribbons. The queen actually used the hamlet as a place for relaxing walks, or to host small gatherings. The fact that the hamlet was also a functioning farm, a point upon which the queen insisted, meant that it served an educational role for the royal children.”

WEEK 9 RECAP: Finale November 19, 2018
Tumblr media
The faces say it all. Shout out to Dancing With The Stars for keeping liquor stores afloat because after the winner was announced I drank until I forgot who Grocery Joe Store (Typo and it stays. I told you I drank!) was. I don’t know how to write about tonight. Do I write from a snarky angle and drag the winner? Or from an ironic angle and act like I saw this coming all along? Or from an unbiased angle like I’m Louis Theroux? This is what I’ll do. I’ll list everything that went down as I please and when the snark comes I’ll let it out freely like flatulence. So the remaining four couples performed two dances; their favorite dance of the season and a freestyle. In between we got a barrage of live-ish performances and dance reprises, like Joe’s trio. Oh how I wish those showers at the end were Chinese water torture. Tonight’s scores were combined with the live online votes, determining the winner at the end of the night.
Stars Favorite Dances
Alexis | Argentine tango | 9 9 9
Redid the Swan Lake dance from New York City night. They say it’s their favorite dance but it’s more like they want redemption for that tutu that didn’t come off before. So according to Alexis her journey is about finding her confidence thanks to Alan. “I’ve found love and I’ve never felt better.” Ladies, work really hard and at the end your man will still take the credit.
Bobby | cha cha | 8 8 8
Redid the MC Hammer trio. “We’ve grown on the judges like a fungus,” said Bobby. That’s the only true thing he’s said. It was better because mostly because the trio was turned into a duo so Bobby didn’t have to juggle a second partner. Is this cheating? No? Okay. Of course Bobby threw his shoe at the judges so they could sign it like some middle school yearbook signing party.
Evanna | tango | 10 10 10
Redid the stray cat tango. She redid it because it was the first time she felt truly confident. She said she wanted to relive the feeling. That’s beautiful! She didn’t have the cat ears this time so she was Trinity from The Matrix emerging from trashcans.
Milo | charleston | 10 10 10
Redid the subway charleston. This is one of my favorite charlestons ever. “This is the most meaningful thing that has ever happened in my life,” says Milo. Well, no shit. What happened before this? You ate apple sauce with your hands in kindergarten?
 Freestyle
Alexis | 10 10 10
Got those last minute tears out by talking about making her mom proud. I was wondering what was going on with the dead mom plot line. Accompanied by guest Avril Lavigne, Alexis and Alan danced a powerful contemporary about Alexis finding strength after the death of her mother. This song would be perfect for a Yankee Candle commercial.
Bobby | 10 10 10
This is some of Sharna’s best choreography right up until Bobby introduces the dance by saying he’s just as clueless as he was in the beginning. And it’s so true. He learned nothing. This whole time Bobby had no emotional breakthrough (if he did it wasn’t shown) and didn’t improve in his dancing. He should’ve stood in place to whole time to signify his stagnancy in the competition. Bobby and Sharna invited some eliminees to the stage to tie in with the freaks concept of their “The Greatest Showman” dance, I think. Then they sealed the entire dance with “flossing” dancing to tie into Bobby’s flossing moment from New York City night. The judges condescendingly complemented this dance.
 Milo | 10 10 10
A moody contemporary/hip-hop in the rain. I give them props for not falling in the puddle dancing part and for not dropping the umbrellas. I feel like out of all the couples they’ve made the strongest bond and it’s because of their bond that Witney gave Milo so much of herself. I feel like this is Witney’s strongest freestyle and she did the hardest lifts this season. Milo lifted Witney up, literally and figuratively, and that’s what it’s all about.
Evanna | 10 10 10
Evanna explained she wants to dance to “It’s Oh So Quiet” by Bjork because it is her favorite song. We love a contestant with actual taste. She got her last tears out because she won’t dance with Keo again. Funny because I cried too when I had to watch Joe dance again. The dance is alright. A little too La La Land/phone commercial for me. The funny thing is “It’s Oh So Quiet” was what La La Land was trying to do so it’s fitting?
Tom Bergeron Quip of the Night
“You are on very true words the people’s champion.” The shade was strong with that one, Tom.
Len Goodman Zinger of the Night
About Bobby’s “Can’t Touch This” cha cha: “You put the ham in Hammer”
Observations
I liked how they used the same song in the premiere as in the finale. Quentin Tarantino is shook
My boyfriend dancer Robert Roldan is back! I wish he was a permanent troupe member
Performances by Dan + Shay and Lauren Daigle. I chose the Lauren Daigle performance to feed my dog and I made a good call
The montage of everyone that was eliminated broke my heart
The Joe voodoo doll that I made didn’t work because he came back to haunt us with a repeat of his “I’m Too Sexy” trio
The 10 score paddle is my favorite because it lights up
Shout out for Evanna from Emma Watson
Cameo from Robin Thicke, who just lost his home in the California fires. Maybe they will let him crash in the studio
My favorite part of the finale is all the times the camera people give up. I think the DP went out for dinner during the pro number
Tinahse sang a cover of  “Fever” in a key suited for a basso profundo. Get the Advil because I’m getting a fever from this cover
I think I heard Alan say Alexis flew Alan’s parents to LA to watch the finale. Fake romance or not it’s sweet that she did that
Erin: “Emma you gotta go change you got a big number!” Am I supposed to believe that these group numbers are live? That would be a logistics nightmare.
And The Winner Is...
According to ABC Publicity, in 4th place are Alexis Ren and Alan, in 3rd place are Evanna Lynch and Keo, and in 2nd place are... Milo Manheim and Witney. Bobby Bones is the winner of season 27 of Dancing With The Stars. I feel like I’m wearing a wet diaper, but on my emotions. It’s taken me a while to figure out why I’m so uneasy with Bobby winning and here is why. A lot of people have been saying “it’s a dance show and Bobby can’t dance therefore he isn’t deserving of winning.” I can see that, but you don’t even have to go that far. Let’s look at Dancing With The Stars like any reality TV competition. You are judged/scored/voted/whatever on what you do during the time you’re in that competition. Not before, not after. Bobby was voted based on his work before the competition. That’s morally wrong. If these voters actually watched Bobby dancing the natural reaction would be to change the channel. Congratulations, Bobby fans. You made Dancing With The Stars exactly what its critics dismiss it as; fading celebs with no dance experience being praised for merely attempting to salsa. So many people can be blamed for this. Anyway, we can spend all day whining and pointing fingers, but we are taking attention away from what’s really important and that is Len Goodman’s one liners. So here I leave you with Len Goodman’s best moments of season 27 in a section I call “One Leners”
“You didn’t do much, Joe, but you didn’t do much very much well.”
“If you go home I’m gonna go home and pickle me walnuts.”
“You put the boy in flamboyant.”
“You went from Hollywood to Dollywood.”
“You looked like a waiter giving h’orderves.”
“If you don’t come back I’m gonna show me bum in the supermarket.”
“I’ve got underpants that are 17 years old. I’m probably wearing them now.”
“You put the ham in Hammer”
“Your bottom is the tops.”
“You’ve got guns, but not always the ammunition.”
“You might have a lot of hardware, but you make it look like easyware.”

HI!
My name is Jaslyn. I'm 17 yrs.old and I'm from the U.S. I'm Mexican-American and I love comic books, drawing, reading contemporary novels, (ex. Ms. Perigrine, The Help, Fan Fiction, Eleanor & Park, Since You've Been Gone..) going on nature walks, traveling, going to the coast, swimming pools, and non-scary amusement parks. Plus Dank memes. Can't forget about that. I'm a really good listener with not-that-good advice. I tend to be very motherly and I can be overbearing but please stop me if I do so. I'm very shy with new people and I deal with Depression and anxiety so I will go quiet for a while but I am ok with talking about things and share tips and to help others. My favorite music/shows/movies MCR, The Killers, Girlpool, Tyler, The Creator, Frankie Cosmos, Summer Salt, Childish Gambino, Linkin Park, Blue Magic, The Beatles, Selena Quintanilla, The Weeknd, Led Zeppelin, The Misfits, Benny Goodman, Glen Miller, Louis Armstrong, cumbia, and also any music from 20s to 80s. department stores, amazon.com and walmart
Readings on the spatial and equity implications of how we buy and where we buy.
Department Stores Have One Thing Left to Sell: Real Estate Chavie Lieber (Nov 2017, Racked.com)
“The reality is that some department store companies have real estate holdings that are more valuable than the retail business itself,” says Brown. “Selling off real estate to get capital is the way to ride current challenges, upgrade stores, or try to innovate.”
... The US is overstored in general; the number of stores in this country outpaced the demand for them around the year 2000, according to Bloomberg, and yet stores incessantly opened more doors. This, in part with changing shopping behaviors, has created the retail real estate crisis, and Brown says it’s imperative for department stores to start seeing the writing on the wall.
“Department stores don’t need eight floors of real estate anymore,” he says flatly...
“If that Lord & Taylor building brought in nearly $1 billion, I could see the Herald Square flagship bringing the same, if not more, and hotels and high-end apartments would be perfect for the location. It’s just too much money on the table for retailers not to look at.”
Other real estate gems include Bloomingdale’s massive Upper East Side location, the Saks Fifth Avenue location that literally generated the company’s name, and the Central Park-adjacent Bergdorf Goodman mansion. It might be sad to imagine a future in which department stores have shrunk down to tiny boutiques while historical buildings are handed over to sprawling tech companies, but it’s the inevitable future.
The Myth of Main Street Louis Hyman (Oct 2017, New York Times)
Main Street requires shoppers who don’t really care about low prices. The dream of Main Street may be populist, but the reality is elitist. “Keep it local” campaigns are possible only when people are willing and able to pay to do so.

[Image source: Orlando Times “Amazon warehouse employee: Amazon steals our time]
Meet the CamperForce, Amazon's Nomadic Retiree Army Jessica Bruder (Sept 2017, WIRED)
In the mid-2000s, Amazon had a problem. Every year, the company scrambled to find temporary workers during the peak months of hectic commerce leading up to Christmas. In some areas of the country, reliable on-demand labor was so hard to come by that it resorted to busing in workers from three to five hours away. Then, in 2008, a staffing agency came up with something new: inviting a team of migrant RVers to work at the facility in Coffeyville, Kansas.
Pleased with the results, Amazon brought in more RVers the following year, expanding the program to warehouses in Campbellsville, Kentucky, and Fernley, Nevada. Amazon gave the new initiative a name—CamperForce—and a logo: the silhouette of an RV in motion, bearing the corporation’s “smile” logo.
Many of the workers who joined CamperForce were around traditional retirement age, in their sixties or even seventies. They were glad to have a job, even if it involved walking as many as 15 miles a day on the concrete floor of a warehouse. From a hiring perspective, the RVers were a dream labor force. They showed up on demand and dispersed just before Christmas in what the company cheerfully called a “taillight parade.” They asked for little in the way of benefits or protections.
'A Major Distraction': Is A Megadeal Like Amazon's HQ2 Always Worth It? Alina Selyukh (Oct 2017, NPR)
Thursday marks the deadline for bids in Amazon's highly publicized search for a location for its second headquarters, dubbed HQ2. Cities are clamoring to land the conglomerate's project and its unparalleled promise of up to 50,000 jobs paying an average of $100,000, at one of the world's fastest-growing companies.
But with that comes some public soul-searching: How much should a city or state subsidize a wealthy American corporation in exchange for such a shiny promise?
"There is a whole system in economic development that has pitted states and cities against each other for corporate relocations. Amazon just happens to be very good at it," says Amy Liu, who runs the Metropolitan Policy Program at the Brookings Institution.
Corporate subsidies, by one conservative estimate, top $70 billion a year. That's what cities and states give away in foregone taxes and other concessions to companies — sometimes for the prospect of new jobs and sometimes just to keep existing ones.
By multiple estimates, Amazon has already cashed in on more than $1 billion in taxpayer-funded subsidies and incentives for its warehouses, data centers and other operations.
Amazon takes a page from bricks-and-mortar bookstores  Christopher Borelli (March 2017, Chicago Tribune)
"You ladies ever shop at Amazon.com?" a clerk asked two women.
"You ever met anyone who hasn't?" one of the women asked, askance.
Last year when Amazon announced it was opening a bookstore in Lakeview, a shiver of doom raced through Chicago's independent bookstore culture: For more than 20 years, founder Jeff Bezos' tech monolith had earned its reputation as a bugaboo for local retailers, cutting not only into profits but any certainty that there would always be a place in Chicago for a neighborhood bookstore. Now they wanted a share of the neighborhood? Several months later, the surprise — at least to judge from its first weeks, and Amazon's legendary prescience — is how self-consciously unnecessary Amazon Books feels.
...
Amazon Books is not what you would call a book lover's paradise. You're more likely to get a lengthy explanation of pricing — Prime members receive their usual discount, everyone else pays list — than get into a conversation about the new George Saunders. Perhaps because, unlike traditional bookstores, the stock has less to do with taste and its employees' reading experiences and more to do with algorithms and analytics. As explained by those employees, its "highly curated" selection is culled from a mix of Amazon.com best-sellers, book-buying trends, online ratings and, yes, the discretion of a curation team. You are told almost every book in the store received at least four stars (out of five) from Amazon reviewers

The Rule of Logistics: Walmart and the Architecture of Fulfillment Jesse LeCavalier (2016)
How the world’s largest retailer is redefining architecture by organizing flows of merchandise and information across space and time
Jesse LeCavalier analyzes Walmart’s stores, distribution centers, databases, and inventory practices to make sense of its spatial and architectural ramifications. A major new contribution to architectural history and theory, The Rule of Logistics helps us understand how retailing today is changing our bodies, brains, buildings, and cities.
The Rule of Logistics shows how the world’s largest retailer is redefining architecture, subjectivity, and sovereignty by moving merchandise and information through space and time. Jesse LeCavalier’s research and interpretations are astute and multifaceted.

408: Milt Hinton memories with Kurt Morrow
In this special episode, we chat with Kurt Morrow about the time he spent with Milt Hinton.  Milt's wife Mona asked Kurt if he would live in faculty housing with Milt.  Kurt shares some of these life-changing experiences with us today.
More about Milt Hinton
Milt “The Judge” Hinton was regarded as the Dean of jazz bass players. He was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1910, and at the age of eleven moved to Chicago with his family. He began his musical education by taking private violin lessons, but while attending Chicago's Wendell Phillips High School and playing in a band sponsored by the Chicago Defender newspaper, he learned to play bass horn, tuba, cello, and eventually the bass violin. Like many aspiring Southside musicians of his generation, he was influenced by the legendary educator, Major N. Clark Smith. During the late 1920s and early 30s, Milt worked as a freelance musician in Chicago and performed with legendary jazz artists including Freddie Keppard, Zutty Singleton, Jabbo Smith, Erskine Tate, and Art Tatum. His first steady job was with a band led by Tiny Parham, followed by a stint with violinist Eddie South’s Orchestra. Milt’s earliest recording come from this era.
In l936, Milt joined Cab Calloway and for fifteen years performed with Calloway and renowned sidemen such as Danny Barker, Chu Berry, Doc Cheatham, Cozy Cole, Dizzy Gillespie, Quentin Jackson, Illinois Jacquet, Jonah Jones, Ike Quebec, and Ben Webster. During this period he was also featured on numerous recordings accompanying Benny Carter, Benny Goodman, Lionel Hampton, Coleman Hawkins, Billie Holiday, Ethel Waters, and Teddy Wilson - to name just a few. Most of these sessions have become jazz classics.
After leaving Calloway in the early 50s, Milt began working as a studio freelancer in New York City. For two decades he played on thousands of jazz and popular records. He also played on hundreds of jingles and film soundtracks and numerous radio and television programs. In addition, he made concert and festival appearances around the world and toured extensively with Louis Armstrong, Pearl Bailey, and Bing Crosby.
Milt has played with virtually every jazz and popular artist from Ellington, Coltrane and the Marsalis Brothers to Streisand, Midler and McCartney. In the late 80s Chiaroscuro Records released Old Man Time , a double cd featuring Milt along with many life-long friends from the music world. Laughin' at Life, was released by Columbia Records in 1995 and Chiaroscuro recently released The Judge at His Best, a selection of his recordings on that label over three decades, and the Bassment Tapes, which features Milt performing with groups he assembled.
Milt received honorary doctorates from William Paterson College, Skidmore College, Hamilton College, DePaul University, Trinity College, the Berklee College of Music, Fairfield University, and Baruch College of the City University of New York. He won the Eubie Award from the New York Chapter of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the Living Treasure Award from the Smithsonian Institution, and he was the first recipient of the Three Keys Award in Bern, Switzerland. In 1993, Milt was awarded the highly prestigious American Jazz Master Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, in 1996 he received a New York State Governor’s Arts Award, in March 1998 he was awarded the Artist Achievement Award by the Governor of Mississippi, and in 2000 his name was installed on ASCAP’s Wall of Fame.
Milt began taking photographs of his friends in the l930s, and he has continued ever since. Over the years his collection has grown to more than 60,000 images. The work depicts an extensive range of jazz artists and popular performers in varied settings - on the road, in recording studios, at parties, and at home - over a period of six decades. In June 1981, he had his first one-person photographic exhibition in Philadelphia and since then he has had exhibits across the country and in Europe. In addition to being published in major periodicals, Milt’s photographs have appeared in documentary films including The Long Night of Lady Day (Billie Holiday), The Brute and the Beautiful (Ben Webster), and Listen Up (Quincy Jones). A Great Day in Harlem
a 1994 documentary about Esquire’s photographic shoot of jazz legends in 1958, features numerous photographs by Milt as well as a home movie shot by his wife, Mona Hinton.
In 1988, Bass Line: The Stories and Photographs of Milt Hinton, by Milt Hinton and David G. Berger was published by Temple University Press. It was selected Book of the Year by JazzTimes. In 1991, OverTime: The Jazz Photographs of Milt Hinton, was published by Pomegranate ArtBooks.
In 1990, Milt's 80th year, WRTI-FM in Philadelphia produced a series of twenty eight short programs in which Milt chronicled his life. These were aired nationwide by more than one hundred fifty public radio stations and received a Gabriel Award as Best National Short Feature in 1990.
In June 2000, a concert was held to pay tribute to Milt on the occasion of his 90th Birthday. Milt passed away six months later.
In late 2002, Keeping Time: The Life, Music & Photographs of Milt Hinton, a one hour documentary film was completed. It was produced and directed by David G. Berger and Holly Maxson. It debuted at the London Film Festival, won the Audience Award at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2003, and has been shown at film festival both here and abroad.
Milt and Mona Hinton were married for fifty-seven years and have a daughter Charlotte and granddaughter Inez who live in Atlanta. The Hintons’ life-long involvement in their Queens, New York community, their strong commitment to family, and their ongoing contribution to music and photography made them both role models and an inspiration to younger generations.

Donny Osmond Wins Dancing With The Stars Season 9
There has been much speculation and numerous media reports encompassing alleged quotes from singer Aaron Carter on the legendary King of Pop, Michael Jackson. When a noted job interview produced headlines more than alleged quotes from Carter, the singer quickly denied that he had at any time stated any of the issues that he was becoming quoted as saying. In accordance to a new update made by the singer by way of Twitter, Aaron Carter will reportedly be featured on E! Information these days in an interview in which he will be talking about the Michael Jackson story. Lindsay Lohan - one time flame of teen feeling Website - made formal her break up with Samantha Ronson on Twitter, or at minimum this is what US Journal reports. Speculations were operating wild that Lindsay Lohan was in terrible shape, and paparazzi were on higher alert for some star studded cat fights.

Karina Smirnoff is always a enjoyment to watch on the dance floor. There is no denying that she is one of the very best professionals in the bunch. However, placing up with the daggers she throws the judges and the viewers when issues don't go her way is just as well a lot to ask.
Aaron Carter Net Worth 2017
Co-hosts Tom Bergeron and Samantha opened the hour of the first Dancing with the Stars fall 2009 outcomes display by turning to head decide Len Goodman and requesting the judges' pick for the encore dance. Final night's shock sleek swan of the ballroom Kelly Osbourne and Louie van Amstel delighted the group with their Viennese Waltz once again. I'm still so amazed with Kelly. I experienced, fairly literally, nearly no expectations for Kelly Osbourne on DWTS season nine. I thought she'd suck and I felt terribly for poor Louie. But she's incredible and was incredible yet again tonight.

DeLay had to throw a joke about politics in there, stating that it is "simply outrageous for him to go still left." His "Wild Thing" dance was described as "surreal," and his dancing was really better than I believed it would be. He was goofy, and that was likely a great idea to get the voting public to believe of him as a polarizing determine. Mark Dacascos and Lacey Schwimmer threw on their own into the jitterbug with frantic flips and frighteningly high kicks. The Iron Chef The united states star kept up with the creative choreographer from his companion and the function paid off. Combined in with the needed jumps and snaps had been some extraordinary stunts from Mark, such as a back flip and the splits. The entire routine was super adorable - with Lacey dressed as a feisty feline - all the way to the end when Mark collapsed on the flooring.

What it comes down to is who has the larger enthusiast foundation viewing "Dancing with the Stars" and voting? Snowboarders who support Vito? Soccer fans who support Irvin? Swimmers who support Coughlin? Coughlin is a California girl, born and raised in this condition. She attended UCBerkeley. The initial 7 days of Dancing with the Stars season 9 is in the background publications, and there was plenty of motion featured on tonight's initial results show. The cast of Broadway's musical smash The Lion King and Sean Kingston provided up performances, and there was a touching tribute to actor Patrick Swayze, who lately died of most cancers. And of course, no Dancing with the Stars results show is complete with an elimination: Two celebrities and their expert partners were sent packing by show's end. So now you want to know who went house on Dancing with the Stars! Study on for a complete recap and the large reveals. Singer Aaron Carter and companion Karina Smirnoff were next to go on DWTS season nine's 3rd 7 days of competition. They offered up a Rumba that Aaron promised would "come straight from the heart". I cherished Karina's glittering white dress, but Aaron's weird belted factor did absolutely nothing for me. He can definitely move, but he nearly seemed to be attempting as well difficult. Don't get me incorrect; it was great, just not stellar. Bruno said it was well done, but lacked fluidity. Carrie Ann called his lines "gorgeous" and told him to listen to Karina and "tone back again" his actions. Len told him to watch his arm actions rather than just "flinging them". Yup, I can dig those comments. from this source and Karina Smirnoff's Dancing with the Stars period 9 7 days three scores: 8, six, seven = 21.

Kelly Osbourne and Louis van Amstel experienced a big obstacle to conquer this week: Kelly. Her insecurities, which have plagued her all period, came back again in rehearsals for the jitterbug. Regardless of her lovable sequined gown, the schedule lacked spunk and the kind of wild abandon introduced by mark. Kelly went via the motions with some achievement but her facial expressions swung from a large smile to a severe pout. The tabloid favorite will have to rely on her followers to have her through. The last two components of the evening were "relay dances," in which 4 pairs of partners at a time competed, with the judges naming first via fourth place winners and awarding points in accordance to placement. In the salsa relay, it was Donny Osmond, Ashley Hamilton ,Louie Vito and Chuck Lidell. Osmond received the greatest from the judges.

When I was four years old, I really begged my dad for a guitar. He was like, "No, you can't have 1 till you're five." So, eventually, when I was five, he gave me a guitar, and ever since, I never want to place the guitar down. That's really where it all began. At least, this period, viewers lastly received a opportunity to see Kym Johnson in full action. She has moves that she's never experienced the chance to display off in current cycles. Dancing with the Stars the Outcomes Show will air tonight, 11/03/2009, on ABC at eight:00 Central time. Tune in to discover out who will be voted off on the double elimination spherical and which two contestants will have the most affordable scores, therefore competing in a dance off, exactly aaron carter where the Dancing with the Stars judges will decide their fate.

An Interview With Pop Feeling Aaron Carter
What occurred on Dancing with the Stars period 9's 3rd week of competition? Who performed "the Samba from zombietown"? Who suffered an damage during the 7 days, casting a shadow of question more than his ability to carry on on with the DWTS season nine competitors? Study on for the DWTS particulars! The evening finished with Melissa and Mark tied for initial place with Mya and Dmitry. The scores were flip flopped all over the place. Followers and judges had been shocked when their explanation and his partner Karina Smirnoff landed on their own in the base two. But in the end, it was enthusiast preferred Chuck Liddell who recieved the lowest mixed judges and fan votes. Chuck danced his last dance to the Texas Two Stage.
youtube
Snowboarder Louie's smile on the dance floor looked like the ultimate representation of deer in headlights: he danced like a truck was about to strike him. Louie received some pretty significant praise from the judges, even if he did get known as a "little dancing hobbit" by Bruno. I guess Louie can dance all the way to The Shire with a rating of 19, and with a very great impact on the team salsa.
Aaron Carter Arrest
Macy Gray. Sweet mercy that voice is back again. Allow's hope for an early exit, or for her to put on 1 of these dresses marketing her new album like she did on MTV's VMAs that one yr.

DeLay had to toss a joke about politics in there, saying that it is "simply outrageous for him to go left." His "Wild Factor" dance was explained as "surreal," and his dancing was actually much better than I believed it would be. He was goofy, and that was most likely a great concept to get the voting public to believe of him as a polarizing figure. Kathy Ireland and Tony Dovolani. Kathy Eire is a design, actor, Sunday school teacher and CEO. Will this famous bikini model and corporate entrepreneur have what it requires to make it to the leading? Her companion is beloved Tony Dovolani who has come close to the leading of DWTS, but has never taken house the mirror ball trophy. His previous companions had been Melissa Rycroft, Susan Lucci, Marissa Jaret Winokur, Jane Seymour, Leeza Gibbons and Stacy Keibler. This team may get hands-down in the appears department, but do they have what it requires to attain the end line? Maybe so.
Aaron Carter Fool'S Gold
Age has not been kind to the 68 year previous music producer. Phil Spector -- who can title John Lennon, the Righteous Brothers, Leonard Cohen, and George Harrison amongst songs's greats related with him - was finally convicted of 2nd degree murder in the death of Lana Clarkson. His reserving photo - the now famed Phil Spector mug shot discovered on the Cigarette smoking Gun - provides increase to speculation that pretty a lot any sentence handed down on May 29 will be a life sentence. There has been a lot speculation and many media reports encompassing alleged quotes from singer Aaron Carter on the legendary King of Pop, Michael Jackson. When a noted job interview produced headlines more than alleged estimates from Carter, the singer rapidly denied that he had ever stated any of the things that he was being quoted as saying. In accordance to a new update made by the singer by way of Twitter, Aaron Carter will reportedly be featured on E!
