hi! this is a sign to talk about glen bateman. tell me about your headcanons, or explain your favorite scenes, or just gush about how great he is! whatever you have to say, i want to hear it. :)
Open Floor to talk about Glen?
Are you sure about that?
Eh, doesn’t matter. Too Late. No take backs; already off…
Going to have to do Headcanons. Favorite scene? All of them. Gushing? Would never end and would drift off into incoherent screeching. This is me controlling myself...
Tumblr media
So going off of the 2020 version, because let’s face it, that’s the one that hooked me, (Goddamn it, Kinnear, I blame you…) Glen sees a future image of Fran in his dream. He doesn’t know who this is. It means nothing to him. Hell, Mother Abagail was just ‘some lady from a commercial’; no reason this woman would be any different. Figment of his imagination. His mind working around a (family) life he had opted out of long ago.
Tumblr media
(Kids? Hard pass.)
But then Stu comes, and everything hits. Mother Abagail. Fran. Just what this means.
He is somehow doing impossible things. Things he would have discredited only a month prior. He wasn’t lying when he was giving his speech to Harold; he was (is) a man of science. He believed what could be seen. What could be proven. He married a physicist for fucks sake. “Hard science.” Maybe this stuff could exist, but he sure as shit wasn’t taking it on blind faith. Give him something, or get the hell out of here.
Tumblr media
(And it’s dream prophesies with the steel chair…)
So now for things that aren’t explicitly stated. Headcanon.
In light of this revelation, Glen would be left to wonder what else could have been ‘more’. Mother Abagail was the “most vivid dream” he ever had, but Fran’s must have been pretty damn vivid to paint what he did. What else had he dreamt that had a deeper meaning? Places? Events? Maybe it was an image leading him to a paint spot that put him on the path to run into Stu? Or a trip out that would have brought Kojak to him? Potentially even before that…
I imagine he had quite a few nights on the road lost in thought over this. Because, that’s what Glen does, thinks. Comes up with theories.
It is very probable that he’s seen a few things he naturally passed up as coincidence. The world ending up like this, society causing its own downfall, that didn’t surprise him. Pretty sure, he knew something like this would happen. But was that from his studies of humanity, or because he already had vague notions in his head of this outcome.
Tumblr media
(Both? I don't know...)
With no proof, a dream of destruction like this would have just been a nightmare. With knowledge now, it could have been preparation. Along those lines, did he know his wife would pass early? So much loss, did it subconsciously affect his decision about kids? About his future path? Maybe not, but maybe…
And its possible this wasn’t all just in the past either. In this version, Glen recommends sending Tom as a spy, because he thinks he could do it. But Glen’s interaction with Tom - limited, at best. I’m sure there’s moments that wouldn’t have been screen worthy, there’s been a fair passage of time here, but nominations were coming from groups in. Fran’s group had Dayna. Larry had Judge Farris. Tom was with Nick. Why was Glen the one to bring it up? I think he might have seen something that led him to feel more confident in this recommendation. I think he had a feeling, somewhere in the back of his mind, that Tom would make it out.
Tumblr media
(Even though he desperately wanted somebody to say anybody else.)
I don’t know, this could be completely off base, but these are things I think about. Repeatedly. Because this damn character will not leave my mind. And hey, worse things to think about, am I right?
Glen Bateman > Real Life Bullshit.
Sign me up for the Glen show, all day every day.

Melody of Bygone Days: Awake
Tumblr media
The last thing she remembered was hurtling into the crashing ocean waves.
Aislinn lurched up in bed with yet another gasping, desperate breath. For the span of several moments, she felt disconnected and left floating between two worlds, grounded in neither. Nothing made sense.
Farris had been monitoring the nearby machine with crossed arms and Loe was sitting at the end of the room with a half-empty mug of coffee over a nearby table. The lalafellian Doctor was nowhere in sight, but the room was the very same one she had left when she plunged into the dreamscape. How long she'd been out wasn't clear, but the windows were dark. The sudden movement from her drew the attention of the two men.
"Aislinn, you're awake." said Farris in a mixture of relief and surprise while Loe shot up out of his seat.
"Does me well to see your eyes open again, lass." The Roegadyn said as he approached but his gaze soon turned toward Locke who remained as still as ever.
"But the Cap'n... did ya manage to reach him in there? Why ain't he awake?"
People were talking but the more Aislinn tried to focus, the more a wave of nausea threatened to overtake her.
She squeezed her eyes shut and took in several lungfuls of air, letting the world come back to her in stages. The bed she was in, the fistful of sheets she held in her grasp. The clean, cedar wood smell of the recovery room. Heartwood. She was back at Heartwood. Slowly, she opened her eyes.
Loe’s rumble of words reached her and she turned first to look up at the bulk of the Roegadyn, fitting him back into this world and then swiftly swung her attention to the bed next to her. He was right. Locke lay there, still and as silent as ever.
Fumbling for the device still attached to her, she yanked it off, ignoring Farris’ protestations and staggered from the bed, hurrying to Locke’s side. Perhaps a mistake as the world began to spin once more. She reached out and gripped his arm to steady herself.
“Why isn’t he awake?” She asked, echoing Loe, her eyes fixed to Locke’s face. “I…I found him. I broke the dream. We left together.” She gently shook him, a sense of dread rising.
Keep breathing She heard Stark Oak’s gravelly voice in her head as she often did in times like this. Ain’t ever been a time losing yer head was the answer to anything.
She tore her gaze from Locke and pinned it instead on Farris. “Is it his aether? Has he lost too much? What are the levels?”
As if on cue, Locke finally began to stir from his slumber. His eyes slowly fluttered open and he was immediately greeted by the ceiling of an unfamiliar room. A ceiling, and the all too familiar voice of a panicking Aislinn beside him. "Easy now, I'm here." his voice was still rough as he weakly reached out with a trembling hand and placed it over her own. He clasped it gently as he tried to sit up.
Her questions forgotten, Aislinn stared down at him feeling such a wave of relief at the sight of those brilliant eyes of his that she went limp for a moment, her brow falling against his chest, stymieing any weakened attempt he made to rise.
Locke fell back into the bed with a pained groan. It felt as if he'd been completely drained of all his energy, and judging by how pale he was the man certainly looked the part too. In his current state the two had cut it close, but Aislinn had managed to save him once again.
"I'm making this a habit now, aren't I?" he laughed weakly as he turned his gaze to her and his lips softly curled into a smile before began to take in the rest of his surroundings.
“You are.” she said with a muffled laugh born of her relief as she lifted her head and gazed down at him. “I think that makes us 1 for 2. If we’re keeping count.”
He didn't recognize the older looking Elezen, but Loe was a reassuring sight to see and he gave his first mate a nod. Loe let loose a sigh of relief and shook his head.
"Ya had us worried there, Cap'n. It's good to have ya back. How ya feelin'?"
"Like shit."
"Ya certainly look it," Loe said with a laugh.
"Where am I? How long was I out? The rest of the crew alright?"
"Aye, aye. The lot's fine. They're waiting back on the ship as we speak. And where we are... well, I'll let the lass fill ya in."
As Loe and Locke exchanged a handful of words, Aislinn’s free hand drifted across his hair, skirting down the side of his face and along his jaw, unable to stop herself from touching him. Further reassurance that he truly was awake and alive right there in front of her.
“You’re at Heartwood.” She told him, her roaming hand coming to rest on his arm. “Loe brought you here after you collapsed back on the ship.” She nodded to Farris, who was busy disconnecting Locke from the dreamscape device. “This is Farris. He’s an old colleague of mine who knew a bit about what had happened to you. The voidsent that attacked you…” Aislinn trailed off and shook her head with a sigh, catching herself before she went into a complete debrief. She gently squeezed his arm. “We can talk about that later. Or the Doctor can fill you in. For now, you’re a little low on aether and it’s going to take some time before you’re back to your old self. Food’s going to be the best way to do that. I can go and grab you something simple to start. A warm mug of broth.” She offered, knowing he had only awoken moments ago but her medic training and desire to see him well took over.
Locke found himself instinctively leaning in toward Aislinn's touch as she brushed a hand against him. Heartwood, was it? Ah, that explained it. He'd stopped by before on a few occasions but never actually ventured into its halls, and it came as no surprise that Loe would have brought him here in his condition. Mustering up what little strength he had, Locke sat up in bed with a groan before leaning into the headrest to get a better look around the room. The mention of Farris drew his gaze toward the Elezen, and he nodded in greeting toward him.
"So you've had a hand in saving my life. Much obliged," Locke said with a smile before his gaze returned to Lin.
"Some food sounds like it'd hit the spot right about now," he hadn't realized just how starved he felt until she brought it up. And when Aislinn left, though by all rights he should be resting, he began to speak at length with the others around him. Discussing what had happened. How his circumstances came to be, and what needed to be done from there. It was a lengthy back and forth, and by the time Aislinn had returned with a piping hot mug of broth in hand the three were still deeply engaged in the conversation along with the Doctor who had returned.
But Locke's attention diverted away from the others and fell back onto her the moment she arrived. As if she were the only person in the world who mattered. "My thanks, Lin." he smiled softly as he cupped the mug into both hands."We were discussing a means of tracking down the thing that put me here in the first place,"
"I'm against it, boss. After everything ya went through? Doesn't sound so smart to pick another fight with the damned thing. ‘Sides, we ain't got any idea where it even is. Tracking it'd down be like... picking out a needle in a haystack." Loe quickly replied before he turned his attention toward Lin. "Lass, talk some sense into him."
"Be that as it may, we're the ones who woke up the damn thing in the first place. And as such, it's our responsibility to put it in the ground. We still have friends in Limsa who could surely help. Reach out to them, Loe. Have them look into recent cases of mysterious comas surfacing in the region."
“He has a point, Locke.” Aislinn broke in, feeling a tightening in her chest as she stood at his bedside. “You’ve only just woken up and you want to go on a hunt for the thing that put you under.” Everything in her screamed that it was a bad idea. She had just gotten him back and he wanted to court danger again. But she knew why. It wasn’t a foolish whim. He felt responsible. And she knew something about the inexorable pull of responsibility. She glanced away, knowing he was right but resenting responsibility right at that moment. “That said, I know why you have to.” She blew out a breath and brought her gaze back to him. Solemn and soft and his. “But don’t ask me to stay here twisted with worry over whether you’ll come back. I’m going with you.” Her chin tipped up slightly as if half expecting an argument, as if daring him to start one.
Despite any protests from Loe, it was clear that Locke was dead set on this new endeavor, but when Aislinn mentioned coming along for the ride the Hyur fell silent for a time. It would be a dangerous task, there was no doubt about that. The kind Locke would have preferred to keep her out of if he had the choice, but he knew that the danger was precisely why she wanted to tag along in the first place.
After what he'd been through, Locke had little doubt there was anything he could say or do to persuade a stubborn girl like her otherwise and with a heavy sigh the Hyur ultimately relented. "Very well, who am I to say no to an extra pair of hands?"
The conversation continued for a time, but as the night waxed on the others soon departed with their tasks at hand. Farris had gathered what remained of his equipment and gone home while Loe and the Doctor saw it fit to return to the Waltz to update the crew on their Captain's condition and follow through with his orders to seek out their informants scattered around Limsa.

"Theft Charge: Beats Two-year Sentence On New Trial," The Province (Vancouver). September 14, 1943. Page 7. ---- Charles Dion, 38-year-old shipyard worker, was acquitted at the first trial of the Vancouver assizes on Monday of stealing a wallet, containing $32, of Alfred Shankenberger.
The 12-man jury deliberated on their verdict for an hour.
Chief Justice Farris presided. Gordon S. Wismer, K.C., was counsel for the crown; and T. F. Hurley for the defense.
It was Dion's second trial on the same charge. Convicted and sentenced to two years in the penitentiary by Judge Lennox in County Court, the accused was ordered a new trial by the Court of Appeal in June.
Dion, according to the crown, picked the pocket of Shankenberger in the Greycourt Hotel on February. 4. The The defense was an alibi, supported by Dion's evidence that at the time he was sick in bed with flu.

Meet Tim Dunn & Farris Wilks—two billionaires from West Texas.
Tumblr media
They bought Paxton’s acquittal for $3 million. Now they’re pushing a private school voucher scam.
Their ultimate goal is even more ambitious: transforming Texas into an authoritarian, Christian Nationalist state.
Dunn & Wilks are oil and gas oligarchs.
They’re also both Christian pastors.
These two billionaire-pastors are spending their fortune enacting an extreme Christian nationalist worldview in the second-largest state in the country.
And no one is talking about it.
Dunn & Wilks have bought the top politicians in Texas with $100+ million in contributions.
And it’s not just politicians. They fund a sprawling network of PACs, think tanks, and media outlets.
Every right-wing policy that's come out of Texas lately goes back to them.
Tumblr media
When they’re not buying politicians, Dunn & Wilks both preach at far-right churches.
They push a theology of power, control, and domination — not universal love.
Tumblr media
Now their toxic theology is becoming law in Texas.
Just this week, a Dunn & Wilks operative espoused the racist Great Replacement Theory.
She followed it up with a claim that white people are being “genocided.”
This is the Dunn & Wilks worldview.
Tumblr media
How significant is their influence?
Every Republican State Senator and over half of Republican House members in Texas have taken money from Dunn & Wilks.
For some Republicans, nearly HALF of their total campaign contributions are from these two billionaires.
And our statewide officials are in their pockets too.
Greg Abbott takes free trips on Wilks' private plane.
Dan Patrick acquitted Ken Paxton after taking $3 million from the Dunn & Wilks PAC fighting the impeachment.
Tumblr media

Dunn & Wilks have zero tolerance for opposition.
Their PAC—Defend Texas Liberty—recruits far-right candidates to primary Republicans who don't do their bidding.
It's a win-win: they beat the moderate incumbent or force them to take extreme positions.
Dunn & Wilks also control influential legal, policy, & advocacy organizations.
One of those orgs argued in court that pharmacies shouldn't sell birth control.
The lawyer who argued that case later became a federal judge.
He banned the abortion pill.
How a Right-wing Law Firm Shaped the Judge Who Will Rule on the Abortion Pill
Matthew Kacsmaryk cut his teeth at First Liberty Institute, a “religious liberty” law firm with Texas roots—and a growing national reach.https://www.texasmonthly.com/news-politics/first-liberty-abortion-pill-lawsuit/
And they've even created their own right-wing media bubble.
Dunn & Wilks fund Texas Scorecard, the top far-right publication.
Wilks owns the Daily Wire and bankrolls PragerU, a right-wing "education" platform they’re trying to force into our schools.
Texas fracking billionaire brothers fuel rightwing media with millions of dollarsFarris and Dan Wilks’ deep pockets fund climate denialism education, conservative politicians and pro-fossil fuel projectshttps://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/sep/05/texas-fracking-billionaire-brothers-prageru-daily-wire
Now they’re taking on their most ambitious project: replacing public schools with Christian schools.
Abbott just called a special session to pass Dunn & Wilks’ voucher scam.
Republican Sen Bob Deuell said: “They want to destroy the public school system”
http://houstonchronicle.com/opinion/editorials/article/dunn-wilks-paxton-texas-theocracy-democracy-18380689.php
Dunn & Wilks are executing their plan to dismantle public education:
✔️Fund manufactured controversies to discredit public schools
✔️Pass private school voucher scam to defund public schools
✔️Close public schools and shift our entire system to private, Christian education
Tumblr media
Comments from Twitter
There’s been a lot of bad news out of Texas lately.
Paxton’s acquittal, private school vouchers, no-exceptions abortion bans, CRT hysteria, weakened gun laws, Christian nationalism…
It’s all connected to a couple billionaire mega-donors.
Texas is too big and too great to be sold to the highest bidder.
We cannot let two billionaires turn our beloved state into a Christofascist theocracy.
Two billionaire mega-donors bought Ken Paxton’s acquittal. Now those same billionaires are funding the effort to privatize our public schools with a voucher scam. Follow the money. 🧵 #txlege #tribfest23
Just weeks before he presided over the Paxton impeachment trial in the Texas Senate, Lt. Governor Dan Patrick received a $3 million dollar check. It came from Paxton’s two billionaire benefactors: Tim Dunn and Farris Wilks. texastribune.org/2023/07/18/ken…
Follow @ThreadReaderApp to mention us!
From a Twitter thread mention us with a keyword "unroll"
These billionaires bought Ken Paxton's acquittal. According to the Republican Speaker of the Texas House: "The fix was in from the start." beaumontenterprise.com/opinions/colum…
Greg Abbott's voucher scam would divert taxpayer dollars out of public schools and into private schools. But private schools aren't accountable to taxpayers—no transparency, no oversight, no standards. Watch how they struggle to answer my basic questions about accountability…
“You said you don’t want to take the STAAR test. Public schools don’t want to take the STAAR test either. But they have to because there are strings attached to public money.”
Practice here first or read more on our help page!
“Could a child be denied admission because of behavior problems? Could a child be denied admission because of academic performance? Could a child be denied admission because they’re not a cultural fit?”
Texas Republicans are trying to force public schools to display the Ten Commandments in every classroom. I told the bill author: “This bill is not only un-constitutional and un-American, it’s deeply un-Christian.” #txlege
The bill author says she’s a champion of “parental rights.” So I asked her if state-sponsored religious indoctrination violates the rights of parents. This was her response.
Would you be comfortable with adding language to receive parental consent from all the students and parents in the classroom before putting it up?”
In high school, I played Danny Zuko in our production of Grease! Today the House passed a school finance package that includes my bill funding fine arts education. This is the first time in Texas history we’re dedicating funding specifically for the arts in our schools! #txlege
I filed a bill to create a fine arts allotment in our school finance formula. Currently, schools struggle to come up with $ for the arts—relying on booster clubs and private donations. Today Rep. Ken King added the language from my bill to his school finance package (HB 100)!!
If the Texas Senate passes this bill, school districts will receive per-student funding SPECIFICALLY for fine arts. This means hundreds of millions of dollars in new funding for music, dance, art, and theater programs! It’s a game changer.
Billionaire mega-donors are trying to destroy Texas public schools with a private voucher scam. They say it’s what parents want. But thousands of parents just showed up at the Texas Capitol to defend our schools. These PTA moms have a message: Come and Take It. #txlege
Texans love our public schools. Public schools are enshrined in our Texas Constitution, and there’s nothing more Texan than Friday night lights. That’s why voucher scammers are spending millions of dollars to demonize our schools…
These billionaire mega-donors have a simple strategy: 1) Demonize, then 2) Dismantle public education. They've paid politicians to attack our teachers, our librarians, and even our students. Now they're paying politicians to defund and close our schools with a voucher scam.
When I was a public school teacher, I struggled to make ends meet. 40% of Texas teachers work a second job. Thousands are leaving the profession to find work that can pay the bills. Today I’m introducing legislation to give every teacher in Texas a $15,000 pay raise.
We can do this. Texas has a $47 billion budget surplus. That’s billion with a b! We can give every teacher a $15,000 raise, give all support staff a 25% raise, and still have more than HALF the surplus left over.
Hoarding this surplus while teachers and students are suffering is immoral. But it’s also bad business. You don’t stick your money under a mattress—you put it to work by making smart investments. And the smartest investment we can make is in the next generation.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if the entire Republican Party were in on creating a huge, stinking distraction in Congress just so Greg Abbott could shaft the state of Texas.

Ooh. I love how Meghann Thee Reporter is airing these people out! Was silent the whole time about what happened to Meg. But was behind closed doors writing letters to the judge hoping he’d get a lighter sentence! This all is so nasty! Meat riders exposed!
Seeing how utterly alone that girl was makes my heart ache. I’ll never forgive those who hurt her. I don’t care if they post apologies, it’s a grudge match And as far as Im concerned, T Farris the only friend she got.
T Farris deserves a fucking congressional medal for the bullshit he has helped Megan navigate in this industry. He is a veteran in the Houston music scene. I know he aint never seen no shit like this play out. And yet, every time you see Megan, you see him now. Holding it down
Even Bun B said Megan aint got nobody but T Farris.

The right's deep bench.
Tumblr media
April 13, 2023
You no doubt already know about such fat-cat Republican donors as Sheldon Adelson, the Mercers, the Kochs and the DeVos family. But last week we learned about yet another ultra-right, über-influential red team player named Harlan Crow. Crow, it seems, is a Texas real estate developer worth upwards of $20 billion, who collects Nazi artifacts (including an autographed copy of Mein Kampf) and has been purchasing the judicial favors of Mr. Justice Clarence Thomas with expensive gifts and lavish vacations for at least 20 years.
But he's not the only deep-pocketed reactionary benefactor you never heard of. There is, for example, 90-year-old Barre Seid, a secretive Chicago manufacturing magnate who gave the largest donation to a political advocacy group in US history ($1.6 billion to the Federalist Society, a conservative judge factory). Or Tim Dunn and Farris Wilks, the two billionaire oil and fracking barons who, as CNN reports, "have quietly bankrolled some of Texas' most far-right political candidates."
Also in the lineup:
Los Angeles real estate tycoon Geoff Palmer (worth $3.2 billion), who gave $5 million to a Super PAC supporting Trump's 2016 campaign and $310,00 to his "victory fund."
Former CEO of Pharmacyclics and devoted Scientologist Robert Duggan (worth an estimated $2.6 billion), who donated $1.6 million to Trump's campaign.
Isaac Perlmutter, the retired CEO of Marvel Entertainment (worth a cool $5.8 billion), who gave $26 million to Republican candidates.
Casino owner Phillip Ruffin (worth around $2.3 billion), who gave $2.7 million overall in the last presidential election.
Diane Hendricks, co-founder of ABC Supply and Wisconsin's wealthiest woman (net worth: $8 billion), who shelled out $10 million, mostly to former state governor Scott Walker.
Then there are the super-rich sports team owners with a fondness for funding Republicans. Like the managing owner of the Arizona Diamondbacks, Ken Kendrick, who dispersed over $450,000 in campaign contributions among 40 Republican candidates and PACs. Or New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, who donated nearly $2 million to Republicans in 2020. Batting cleanup is San Francisco Giants owner Charles Johnson with more than $3.25 million in federal contributions, including $435,200 to Trump Victory.
Other top Republican mega-donors include Steve Schwarzman (CEO of the Blackstone Group), Ken Griffin (CEO of the hedge fund Citadel), Paul Singer (President of Elliott Management), Ken Langone (co-founder of Home Depot), and many more. With the US home to more than 700 billionaires — over a quarter of the world's total — you can bet conservatives won't be running out of financial team mates any time soon.

What does this phrase mean? “Evidentiary position?”
“Under this alternative view, the exclusionary rule should not merely be a deterrent or future misconduct by police, but rather should return the government to the same evidentiary position it would have held absent the constitutional violation (of the Fourth Amendment.)”
Examples from web -
Wikipedia: “After a lengthy analysis of various federal and state precedents where police had obtained incriminating statements from jailed defendants plotting with undercover investigators or informants to commit crimes that would improve their evidentiary position in cases pending against them, Judge Woodall reiterated the Supreme Court's holding in McNeil v. Wisconsin that the Sixth Amendment right to counsel is offense-specific and could not be assumed to apply to statements Perry made about Janet's fate while conspiring with Farris since the two crimes were not closely related enough
New South Wales Bar Association:  It is unsurprising given audio/visual recording capability now being available on most mobile telephones that the courts exercising family law jurisdiction are frequently confronted with parties seeking to rely upon such evidence at trials or interim hearings, or that at a preliminary stage, Counsel are asked to advise whether such evidence can be relied upon. This seminar will look at the evidentiary position of such recordings in the context of courts exercising jurisdiction under the Family Law Act 1975. (maybe it means “make the government’s position null”)
UAE: Do the courts in your jurisdiction have any discretion to exclude the admission of a document that is otherwise admissible? The default evidentiary position is that a document is admissible unless its authenticity is challenged by the opponent or is called into question by the court (Article 22, Evidence Law).

He continued, “I mean, that for me like those sort of shows or big shows that like what completely inspires me like I spend loads of time in the studio just sort of visualizing where the tracks are going to be paid and stuff. I was unveiling a new light show at same time which involves a big moving desk of light and the sort of combination of that and the track just really seems like off on nine.” And the clip kind of went a little bit viral on my socials. Excerpt from Robert Farris Thompson: An Aesthetic of the Cool, African Arts, Vol. 7, No. 1 (Autumn, 1973)
The blending of muscular force and respectability leads to the appreciation of the fit human body in the cool, a right earned, however, by demonstration of character and right living. I once complimented the elders of Tinto-Mbu in the Banyang portion of the United Republic of Cameroon on the fine appearance of their chief. Whereupon they immediately corrected me: "We say people are not judged by physical beauty but by the quality of their heart and soul; the survival of our chief is a matter of his character, not his looks." However, no matter how ordinary his face, it is important for the chief to dress as beautifully as possible in order to attest his fineness of position in appropriate visual impact. He must consequently prove that he knows and controls the forces of beauty as much as the forces of polity and social pressure. Beauty, the full embodiment of manly power, or the power of women, in feminine contexts, is mandatory where it is necessary to clarify social relations. It would not make sense, in African terms of the aesthetic of the cool, to strike balances between opposing factions without aesthetic elaboration.
Coolness therefore imparts order not through ascetic subtraction of body from mind, or brightness of cloth from seriousness of endeavor, but, quite the contrary, by means of ecstatic unions of sensuous pleasure and moral responsibility.
We are in a sense describing ordinary lives raised to the level of idealized chieftaincy. The harmony of the marriage or the lineage ideally reflects the expected first magnitude harmony imparted by the properly functioning ruler to the province or nation at large. Men and women have the responsibility to meet the special challenge of their lives with the reserve and beauty of mind characteristic of the finest chiefs or kings. More than the benefit of the doubt is extended to mankind in his natural state by this philosophy. Man starts not from a premise of original sin but from the divine spark of equilibrium in the soul which enters the flesh at birth from the world of the gods. To act in foolish anger or petty selfishness is to depart from this original gift of interiorized nobility and conscience. This means a person has quite literally lost his soul. He has "departed from himself"" and is in serious danger. The Gd of southern Ghana even say that a person out of harmony with his ideal self can only win back his soul by means of extraordinary aesthetic persuasion: wearing brilliant cloth, eating cool, sumptuous food, keeping important company.

Two more for your Rach 2 curse post: Joshua Farris (USA) won Junior Worlds 2013 skating to a Rach free. Alexander Abt (RUS) on the other hand, was most famously absolutely robbed fucken' blind by the judges at 2002 Europeans after a beautiful free skate to Rach, a robbery so blatant that even Yagudin had the grace to look ashamed.
Add these to the Rach 2 curse. Thank you!

"Alfred Hall Gets 5 Years And 5 Lashes," Vancouver Sun. October 16, 1943. Page 1 & 8. --- For the first time in a decade or more lashes were added to a penitentiary sentence when punishment was meted out in Assize Court today by Chief Justice Wendell Farris to seven prisoners.
Accompanied by a scathing denunciation of the "detestable crimes" of which he had been found guilty - two charges of gross indecency - Alfred G. Hall, 53-year-old self-styled psychologist and nutritionist, was sentenced to five years in the penitentiary and five lashes.
At the same time, Frederick Hathaway, 43, leader of the Aryan Astrological Occult Church of Christ, was given the maximum term for indecent assault, two years in the penitentiary.
Charles Willard Davis, 41, former New Westminster druggist who pleaded guilty to possession of drugs while he was staff sergeant in the RCAMC, was sent to the penitentiary for six years, with a fine of $1000, or an additional six months.
Other sentences given today, were:
Pte. George Donald Bowie, 27, two years from his arrest on May 29 for a statutory offense.
Ralph Prentice, 28, salesman, and Robert Morgan, 27, laborer, three years for burglary.
Robert Findlay, 21, fisherman, one year for burglary.
HAD FAIR TRIAL When court convenes at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Mr. Justice Stiney Smith will preside for the re-trial of two cases in which there were disagreements earlier in the assizes. They are Herbert Gordon Penny, false pretenses, and Robert Walter Millman, theft.
Hall, who is general director of the World Fellowship of Faith and Service and operator of its adjunct, the Human Adjustment institute, claimed he was greatly handicapped at his trials by lack of counsel. He told the chief justice also that there was a public movement to prevent the career which he had chosen as his life work in Vancouver.
"You had extremely fair trials and your ability in conducting your defense was such that I am satisfied it would not have been excelled by many lawyers," Chief Justice Farris told the prisoner.
LONG PERIOD "I think you have a contempt for the law and the decent things of life," he added, and then recited Hall's criminal record which began in Vancouver 20 years ago and extended to Toronto, Chicago, Seattle and back to Vancouver to pile up six convictions for false pretenses, theft, fraud, con-games, violation of immigration laws and non-support.
The chief justice said Hall's conduct in court indicated more than ordinary ability and a remarkable brain. It is too bad, he remarked, that science has not advanced sufficiently to correct the quirk which prevents his ability being of service to the community rather than a disgrace to himself. His Lordship said he could see nothing in the case which war ranted sympathy or leniency.
"Absolutely brazenly you defended yourself on this detestable charge, and I sentence you to five years with five lashes, as I believe that it is only by such means you may be brought to a realization of your position. Though the thought of the lash is to me abhorrent, in a case such as yours I see nothing else that will serve."
In making the sentences on the two counts concurrent, the chief justice stipulated that if the lashes are not given in the first case they shall be given in the second, within four weeks of Hall's admission to the penitentiary.
"COSMETIC SCIENCE" "In the second case you went into the box and your admissions were such as to my mind shows a completely perverted mind and a system of carrying on these perversions with your so-called institute to further what I might term your beastly desires," declared the judge.
Objections taken by G. V. Pelton in behalf of Hathaway of alleged prejudice at his trial by reference to cosmetic science instead of cosmic and the use of the name Hall instead of Hathaway, might be grounds of appeal; also his trial by jury on a lesser charge than the one on which he was committed.
"In these days, when people are seeking faith and religious outlet, those who profess religion and in the name of that religion, commit a crime, it becomes a very serious matter," Chief Justice Farris told the cosmic science lecturer who claimed at his trial to have visited Mars, Venus and other planets.
He was not unmindful of the suffering of drug addicts, the chief justice said after hearing a second impassioned plea by T. F. Hurley for leniency for Davis, the staff sergeant who admitted stealing morphine and cocaine from army supplies and substituting other medicines for a year.
But Davis' case was different to the ordinary drug case because he knew thed anger of going near narcotics; still he took a position of responsibility know- ing there might be serious consequences.
'KNEW WAY AROUND' His Lordship thought it remarkable that Canada has no institutions for the treatment of drug addicts.
He said he took into consideration the sorrow of his parents, wife, a son overseas and a brother invalided home; also the co-operation Davis gave in preventing the serious consequences there might have been. However, the judge said the Crown might have charged him under a section with a maximum penalty of 11 years instead of seven.
A strong recommendation by the jury for mercy was taken into consideration by the chief justice, he said, when he gave Bowie two years from the date of his arrest for an offense against a young girl. He said he also recalled that the complainant was "one who knew her way about" and that the soldier had been drinking.
Criminal records for 10 years and 13 years were confirmed by Prentice and Morgan respectively, when they appeared for sentence for a dairy safe-blowing.
