Basically it's a love letter from one bestie to another but it got kinda out of hand sjjskakak I still hope you enjoy it 🎉 (also ty Nova for color correcting and giving me confidence 💖)

It's like waking up disoriented from a dream. 

Vernon is suddenly snapped out of the daze Seungwkan had left him in moments ago. The man responsible for it is now standing next to him, barking orders out to at least five other people who are running around their tiny, shared apartment.

"Geez, you didn't need to make such a big deal outta things."

"Should've stopped me instead of pouting in silence in your abysmally dark room like always."

"It's not that dark," Vernon protests and scratches the back of his head, "and I don't pout." 

Lilac strands flutter as he tilts his head and does the very thing he said he doesn't do: pout. Seungkwan spares him a look only to roll his eyes.

"Yeah, yeah Mr. Vamp. Maybe when a certain person isn't mentioned, sure." He jerks his head to the right. "Now get your lazy butt moving so I'm not tempted to take a hundred percent of the credit, love, and appreciation in your stead."

Vernon reluctantly peers into the kitchen. Mingyu is waving a spatula in a threatening manner at Wonwoo and their partner for eating and playing with the batter he's been working hard on. Peeking into the living room causes his entire body to cringe at Seokmin and his fiance who are supposed to be blowing up balloons. Instead, they're taking a break to giggle and kiss at one another's necks.

Ugh.

Seeking reprieve, he finally finds comfort stumbling next to Joshua, the seemingly only calm one among the other chaotic scatterbrains. With a kind smile, the maroon-haired man hands a loose end of the various paper chains he's looping together to Vernon, who readily takes it.

"You're pouting."

"I don't pout, Josh."

"Sure, sure. Unless it's about you know who."

"Seungkwan said the same sort of nonsense."

"He's not wrong. Otherwise he wouldn't be putting in all this effort for the both of you."

Vernon frowns. "He didn't have to."

"He did 'cause you were pouting. We all had to."

"I don't… ugh, whatever. All I wanted was something small but different."

"It's different that's for sure." Red bangs fly up when Joshua snorts at a sweaty Seungcheol stumbling through the front door, flanked by additional friends, to bring in an unnecessarily large table. "I know it's not what you normally do but I think it'll be nice."

"We like to do quiet things. Just the two of us. But everything's been screwed up this year."

Joshua's laughter is soft and melodic despite the underlying mockery Vernon suspects it disguises. "So, this surprise party and the commotion that came with it isn't bothering you. You're sulky because quality bestie time has been sacrificed since they went away."

Just because he's right doesn't mean he has to say it. 

"I'm not sulking and I'm not sure what's so funny either." 

"You are, my dear buddy!" He clasps his friend's shoulder reassuringly whose lilac hair cutely lessens the intensity of his perpetual frown. "After we celebrate, you'll get them all to yourself."

Vernon's nose crinkles. "Why is everyone being so insufferable?"

Not bothering to reply, the other man simply hums and stands to hang the completed portion of the chain. He can manage his grumpy younger friend who's now stapling the remaining rectangular pieces of paper a little bit too aggressively. The knowledge that Vernon will settle back into his easy-going nature once you return is inevitable. 

It's just a question of how long all of them will be able to hold out until then.

By the time the sun sets, the fast-paced energy of the afternoon has dwindled down and the party preparations are finally finished.

"Are you sure it will be fine?"

"Honestly, Chwe! Do you not trust my baking skills?" 

"More like I don't trust my fridge."

Seungkwan looks up at the exchange between a whiny Mingyu and indifferent Vernon. "Just don't open the fridge overnight and everything should be fine." He huffs, handing a stack of empty pizza boxes to Seokmin. "There's nothing but the cake in there anyways."

That must be enough to satisfy the dessert maker who obnoxiously puffs out his chest in pride. Wonwoo secures the last pack of untouched beer he'd brought in one hand and his partner's wrist tenderly in the other. Bidding everyone a good evening, he leaves with Mingyu following behind them like an elated puppy heading back home after a tiring walk.

"We'll take these and head out too," Seokmin supplies helpfully as he and his fiance finish gathering the final pieces of trash laying around. "See you tomorrow!"

Joshua is the last to go and jingles his car keys loudly before shutting the door with an exclamation of, "Enjoy the surprise!"

He disappears with a cheeky grin and swift departure before the opportunity to be questioned arises and Vernon turns to his unphased roommate.

"What did he mean by that?"

"Oh, you know him. Sometimes he's normal, more often he's not. Probably just wanted to re-remind you of that fact."

Seungkwan's statement is one that anyone can agree with. Figuring Joshua meant nothing as usual, it's already forgotten by the time Vernon's made his way up the steps.

Much later into the night, he's on a desperate search for something when you call but picks up nonetheless. No matter what he's doing, one thing for sure is that he'll always answer the phone when it displays your name. Because it's you.

But maybe that wasn't the smartest decision.

"Hello 'sol!"

"Hey bestie," the phone is cradled between his shoulder and ear as he rummages between the couch cushions. "What's up?"

"Nothing much, guess I just wanted to hear your voice."

A silly smirk halts him in his tracks. "Miss me?"

"Oh, how I long for you so!" The sarcasm lacing your words can't fully hide the smile he hears. "I've talked to you every day as always, it's like I never even left."

"Wish you didn't."

"You and I both. It's nice to be home but still…"

"We've always spent your birthdays together."

"Which is exactly why you should've come back with me!" 

"Couldn't intrude on the fam like that."

You sigh. "No one would've minded, you're so dear to them." Mimicking your mother's voice, you continue, "Where's that lil Hansolie of yours? We enjoy his company so much, it's as if he's our son. In fact — we might love him more than our own child!"

Vernon laughs brightly. Bold and loud like he always does in your presence. You draw that part out of him like no one else can, setting him at ease to simply be himself. Comfortable. There are no appearances to uphold with you, no worries either. Everything melts away and it's easy to forget what he was all stressed about before you called. Until hurried feet pounding on the floor signify that someone is about to rush into the living room.

"I found them! I found the — " Seungkwan's happy skip halts upon seeing his friend on the phone and attempts to catch his breath after scrambling down the steps. But the keywords to the unfinished sentence roll right off Vernon's tongue out of relief without thinking. 

"The rings?"

Even if he can't see, you perk up from your slouched position in the car and repeat eagerly, "Rings?"

Vernon shares a wide-eyed look with the other man in the room who hesitantly places the box on the coffee table. So much for being relaxed — he got too relaxed and ended up spilling the secret. Exposing himself like an idiot. He normally doesn't care that you are privy to everything there is to know about him but now…

Licking his lips nervously, he chuckles awkwardly. "Uh… yeah?"

"Did you get married or something in the week that I was gone?" you tease. "What's all this ring business about?"

"N-nothing. It's nothing big… y'know how Kwannie was… contemplating… um, engagement."

The man in question gapes and starts waving theatrically while mouthing silent charades full of utter disbelief and betrayal that are readily ignored.

Meanwhile, you snort. "Oh yeah, because that's definitely not a big deal at all. About time! But how did you end up with his rings then?"

Vernon turns his back on a dramatic Seungkwan in order to focus on organizing a believable white lie. "We… invited some of the guys over to talk it out and uh, he didn't want to lose them in the chaos because… he's still deciding and all that, you know… "

"Incredible," you mutter, "yet it seems like you lost them."

Panic, his brain screams. And maybe some shame added as well.

"But whatever, at least you found them." Somehow you seem to miraculously buy his pathetic excuse. Leaving the matter alone because you're distracted by a hearty yawn, he lets out a quiet exhale of relief while you stretch your neck out. "I'm tired." 

Your best friend collapses onto the couch, feeling exhausted himself. "You should get some rest."

"And miss when the clock strikes twelve?"

"You've got a long day ahead, flying out after your celebration. You know you can stay longer if it's too much." 

He's a little nervous saying that after everyone excitedly spent time to set up a surprise party but your well-being will always be more important to them over anything else. 

Mingyu and his cake would survive.

"Puh-lease," you grumble and Vernon knows your eyes just have to be rolling, though you're actually glancing at your watch. "Don't you worry your handsome little head, I'll be right on time."

His eyebrows furrow. "On time for what?"

But you've already put the speaker away from your face, giggling like a gremlin in the background before you loudly cackle, "You're a horrible liar, Hansol!"

He breaks out into a cold sweat, even more perturbed when you simply hang up without even a farewell. "What is up with people today?" 

"I dunno, what's up with you?" Phone held dazedly in one hand, Vernon turns to face Seungkwan's wrath. "Because suddenly, I'm engaged — according to your standards!"

"Sorry 'bout that. I'll explain everything when I give them their gift, okay? I think… I don't think they believed me anyway."

"Even Bookkeu wouldn't be fooled by that awful acting. Gosh, now I'm gonna feel bad about not proposing."

"Aw, c'mon Kwan. You know that's not what this meant."

Seungkwan's not really upset and Vernon knows that. Still. It's a subtle sting of a reminder that neither in the ten-year relationship have made a move for sealing that lifelong commitment. It would be a lie to say that it didn't occasionally eat away at the gentle-hearted man. Not that marriage was needed in every romantic relationship.

"I should've said Seokmin but that wouldn't have made sense either… "

"Those two? They're so attached to the hip they would've never handed over their rings to anyone. As a matter of fact though, I wouldn't give you mine either seeing as how you treated yours."

Vernon is quick to jump at his roommate and put him in a light headlock as faux retaliation, knuckles rubbing on the top of his hair while the latter yells in protest. They roughhouse as usual (this time staying clear of any lamp posts), nearly pulling off one another's clothes in the friendly tussle.

That's the position they freeze in when there's two heavy bangs on the door — Vernon with his hand fisted in Seungkwan's collar who has the former's shirt halfway up his torso. Inching closer to one another, they hold their breath. Peeking warily at the front door before meeting each other's terrified eyes that continue to widen in alarm when the beeping sounds of the code being entered starts after two seconds of silence. 

They scream (very manly screams if anyone asks them about it afterwards) when the lock clicks open because who on earth knows their code and would break into their apartment at 11:56 PM?

"It's me!" You announce with a flourish — arms raised in exhilaration — only to lower them in confusion. "Oh. Am I interrupting something?"

Joshua glances around you to laugh at the two men entangled in what now looks like a hug. "Is that how you guys plan to defend yourselves? With a lover's embrace? You knew we were coming, Kwannie."

"I didn't know you'd show up at midnight!"

They step away from one another with disgruntled expressions and Vernon side-eyes everyone dubiously.

"You knew?" 

Seungkwan's stuttered excuse is cut short when your (and everyone else's) phone buzzes and you excitedly cheer, "Happy gremlin birth hour to me!," and turn to a gobsmacked Vernon. "Aren't I gonna get my welcome back squish and squeeze?"

Of course, he could never deny you a hug. Especially on your birthday. Even if you scared the crap out of him by 'breaking in' when you're supposed to be far away with your family still, he opens his arms with an upward lift of his lips.

"Happy birthday, bestie. Now tell me, what in the world are you doing here?"

He takes in your appearance. Despite the off-and-on nap in Joshua's car on the way back from the airport somewhat helping, there's no way your animated behavior can hide all the obvious tiredness and jet lag.

You back away with a pat to his left bicep that has various rows of little black tattoo symbols encircling it, rocking back and forth on your heels.

"Wanted to celebrate my birthday with you!"

"You should have rested."

"I'm not a child, I wanted to surprise you!"

"But — " Vernon gestures helplessly to you, then the decorations he's sure you haven't noticed, and expects some support from his other friends but they have seemingly disappeared to give the two of you privacy. Plus, likely to escape him asking about the bizarre circumstances.

Gee, what wonderful pals.

"I know, I know… all of you put in a lot of effort. Especially Kwannie."

"I helped too!"

"But it was his original idea and organization, no? You'd never plan something like this."

"Why do you know everything, it's your birthday?" He groans in exasperation at your laughter. "It's supposed to be a secret and you're supposed to be surprised!"

"Ah, speaking of which," you eagerly roll up your right sleeve, "look at what I got!"

His eyebrows raise at the reveal of the ink that now circles over your skin. "Oh? You got tatted?"

"Yes! When I called after you got yours last year, the waitlist was so long I ended up just scheduling it as a birthday gift."

From afar, one might think they're the same as the ones dotting his arm. But upon closer inspection, he's more than pleased to see how you chose to have your own unique personality shine through. Miniscule versions of symbols that mean something precious and objects that seem to represent you best are outlined or filled-in with your favorite color.

"Beautiful."

You smile broadly at how awestruck your best friend is. "No, you."

"No, you."

"No, you."

"Fine, we're both pretty!" Vernon relents, well aware that this could go back and forth forever. 

"That we are." You urge him to sit down on the couch and situate yourself next to him, right shoulder to his left, and grab his wrist. "Look!"

Extending your joined arms, you show him how your tattoos align almost perfectly. Then securing his other free hand in yours with the traditional pinky promise the two of you have done since childhood. He chuckles as you nudge him cajolingly with an elbow.

"I see."

"What do you see?"

"You just want me to say something cheesy 'cause you're in your affectionate era."

"It's the least you could do on my birthday."

A deep, weary sigh. "We're… each other's… better… half?"

The hands you have placed on his body tighten their hold as you squeeze hard in your excitement. He grunts as appropriate between your rambling, focusing mainly on when he'll be able to get circulation back where you're gripping, until you suddenly deflate.

"I messed it up. Stupid, sleep-deprived brain."

"You're not stupid."

"You're right, it's your fault."

"Mine?"

"I took the brain cell but now you have it back because we're together." Finally freeing the poor man, you stand in front of him and point. "Okay, let me try again so you'd better wipe your mind clear."

"Yeah, yeah." Vernon crosses his arms and pretends to look annoyed as if there isn't a goofy grin on his face.

"It was supposed to go something like this. We mirror each other, right?" You gesture to your tattoos again. "We're very similar, maybe even too similar at times. But," you flop down where you were originally seated, "we're also different! Different enough that we can compensate for each other's weaknesses and complement each other's strengths… you know, like you said — all that corny stuff."

"Cute."

"Like you."

"And you."

You lean in so close to Vernon that your noses almost touch. "Yeah, because we're besties and we look cute together. Okay, since I ruined the surprise and told you all my secrets, isn't it your turn now?"

"My turn?"

"Yeah, Mr. Rings."

"Ah… so that was your goal all along."

"Of course, I'm waiting with bated breath."

He raises his chin in the direction of the coffee table. "It's right there."

Despite teasing him about not wrapping it, you quickly snatch the velvet box before he can grab it himself. "Couple rings?" You put a hand over your heart dramatically. "Aw, you shouldn't have, Hansol."

"They're bestie rings, you dolt."

"Did you just call me an idiot?!"

"Yeah. With affection though."

You make a sound of disgust but return to the precious gift, lips curling upwards. "They're beautiful."

"Copycat."

"Stop it, you love me."

"I do."

"Then put it on me," you demand, handing him the ring box and wiggling your fingers in anticipation. 

Vernon mumbles something about how impatient you are and to chillax. But he does as asked and gently takes the hand always used to pinky promise and bro-slap him. Sliding the ring on your middle finger, pleased when it's a perfect fit. Then, he does the same on his own and scrunches his nose in satisfaction.

"Perfect."

"I know."

He takes your hand back in his like before, and brings you into the kitchen. Identical rings brush against each other and the tattoos on your arms act like magical sigils to shield from anything that threatens to break through the personal bubble created by your joined hands.

"How did you figure out my ring size?"

"There are lots of opportunities because you don't fall asleep until some ungodly hour and happen to still be passed out when normal people awaken. So thanks for that."

You stick your tongue out at his snarkiness and receive a dollop of icing on it in return. "Mingyu makes amazing cakes!"

"So you knew about that too."

"Duh. And I know he'll be mad if you cut a piece."

"Two," Vernon deviously points out and places a plate down for himself. 

It would be an absolute crime to not devour such a delicious treat, figuring it a waste to let it sit out instead. Making a gross noise of appreciation at the first bite, you couldn't wait to thank Mingyu later. 

You get that opportunity the next morning as more and more friends from the day before tiptoe in one after the other per Seungkwan and Joshua's request. Quiet giggles and definite blackmail material when they sneak a peek into the kitchen to see you and Vernon fast asleep with your heads laying on the counter, limbs splayed all over the place and each other. 

The two of you had chattered about everything, anything, and nothing at all. No words needed to be said even when a comfortable silence settled as the sun started to rise before both of your eyelids closed. 

You were his best friend and he was yours. That was all that mattered. The strength of your bond meant that you were content just being in each other's thoughts, even at times you were far apart. Physical reminders like tattoos or rings were just the cherry on top of the cake that you had worked hard and spent years together on creating.

Speaking of cakes…

"My precious darling," Mingyu whisper-screeched from afar, "I knew you would be destroyed!" 

He sighs, distraught, and Wonwoo pats him on the back. Their partner begins snickering when the tall man gingerly lifts up the new one he brought with shaking hands. "Good thing I made two!"

com a chegada do halloween, o que mais deixava ____ e sua melhor amiga animadas era a abertura de uma nova cafeteria, onde passarão tempo o suficiente para notar que não há nada de comum nela. incluindo o gentil barista com uma experiência inexplicavelmente vasta em bebidas sem café e com ingredientes que ____ nunca havia visto.

「Capítulo 1 」

Adorável e comum, a tranquilidade das coisas normais...

Seria realmente adorável caso a descomodidade de morar em um prédio de habitantes questionáveis não atrapalhasse a normalidade de ____. Ela não era ingrata, pelo contrário, era bastante reconfortante ter sua própria renda, um diploma que lhe serve de algo e um apartamento cujo aluguel não esfola o seu bolso mensalmente.

Porém, as coisas poderiam sim ser mais convenientes. Embora morar apenas no segundo andar facilite o processo de ter que subir escadas, ____ estava alocada próxima a alguns vizinhos bastante estranhos. 

Nem todos eram como a senhora do final do corredor que sempre tinha receitas de chá para quase toda e qualquer enfermidade que dispensa visitas ao médico. Com todas aquelas plantas de cores que iam além do tradicional verde vibrante na sacada da senhora Wytte, era esperado que ela tivesse um conhecimento ou dois. 

Por exemplo, indo contra as regras do prédio de não ter bichos de estimação, um dos vizinhos — que ____ não tinha certeza de qual, embora suspeitasse que fosse a mulher do cabelo descolorido anormalmente macio — tinha um gato.

O tão repudiado pela sociedade e constantemente maltratado gato preto, longe da mulher causar algum mal a animais. ____ não tinha nada contra gatos pretos, muito menos gatos no geral (ela até gosta de pets). Ao menos até aquela criaturinha cruzar seu caminho. E não, ela não recebeu azar. Todos os pacotes deixados pelo zelador na porta do seu apartamento — o que era outra reclamação, mas para outro momento — foram massacrados por aquelas garras. 

E quando não havia nada para arranhar, a porta era o seu alvo. Por causa do bichano, que estranhamente parecia vigiá-la na portaria do prédio quando chegava do trabalho todas as noites, ____ nunca pôde deixar um pequeno tapete de boas vindas em frente a própria porta. 

E havia aquela família da porta ao lado, uma dupla com uma filha no auge da sua pré adolescência, cheia de ideias criativas e cores vibrantes no cabelo. Tinham se mudado há poucos meses e tudo seria normal, é claro, se não fossem pelos corvos. De primeira foi bastante esquisito, pois ____ viu a garota da família conversando com o animal penoso: 

— A viagem é cansativa, mas terá lanches toda vez, seu esfomeado — sentada na escadaria, a menina, cujo nome ainda era uma incógnita, acariciou o topo da cabeça do animal. 

É bastante comum os donos conversarem com seus pets, Violet, a melhor amiga de ____ tratava seu cachorrinho como um bebê, porém a anormalidade se deu no momento em que o animal respondeu. Não, não como corvos fazem. Corvos comuns não deveriam saber usar sarcasmo, ou deveriam? 

— Não sou eu que como todo o sorvete em casa — a voz era um ganido perturbador, formando palavras e uma frase que, mais tarde, incomodou ____ até o segundo em que fechou os olhos. 

Não depois, é claro. Pois, em mais de um ano, mesmo depois das piores maratonas de filmes de terror psicológico, ____ não teve nem um único pesadelo. Essa era uma das coisas que com certeza ficaria no "top três de motivos para se sentir grata" da jovem moradora, contudo até mesmo a paz durante o sono deixa sua mente a mil enquanto está acordada. Mas, seguindo a rotina constante e repetitiva, ____ ignorava isso e todas as outras coisas, quer fossem boas ou ruins. 

Haviam mais coisas, porém nada daquilo a afetava tão negativamente — com exceção do gato. Portanto, não havia motivos para alarde. Passava longos momentos divagando sobre isso, porém a regularidade de todas as outras coisas mantinha ____ com os pés no chão. 

Sua profunda imersão na monotonia da vida adulta, entretando, estressa Letty. Uma vez que Violet conheceu ____ — há anos atrás, quando as maiores preocupações de ambas eram as provas semestrais —, a mulher fez tudo ao seu alcance para trazer um pouco mais de diversão à vida da amiga. Letty sempre diria que a ____ da universidade era enérgica demais, e que a de agora, era de menos. O suficiente para que ela tenha que agir, como naquela semana. 

— O café? 

— Sim, olha, é tão lindinho! Acho que é a nossa cara, não é exatamente fofo, mas é fofo. 

Posicionadas confortavelmente tortas na cama de Violet — em posições que fariam todas as vértebras de suas colunas sofrerem mais tarde —, ambas olhavam o Instagram da jovem. O perfil havia sido criado há pouco tempo atrás e Letty vinha acompanhando cada atualização como uma fã oficial. Desta vez, ____ estava sendo atualizada sobre a data de inauguração. 

— Eles foram inteligentes — ____ comentou, observando os escuros e arroxeados da decoração de Halloween. 

— Demais! Moonlit Mug abrindo na véspera do Halloween? Estrategistas de verdade… Olha o gatinho, que fofo! — O muito possível pet oficial do café apareceu em mais um dos stories, outro gato na vida de ____. 

Pelo menos ele parece dócil e não do tipo que come minhas caixas. 

— E na noite seguinte as ruas vão estar cheias bem no horário que estão abertos. Pais com fome depois de andar pela vizinhança, crianças ficando encantadas com os chocolates quentes e doces temáticos. 

— Sem contar que a própria temática deles é meio…

— Mística? — ____ ergueu as sobrancelhas, tendo encontrado a palavra exata que Violet procurava. 

— Você poderia, por favor, parar de ser o parasita do meu cérebro? — Os cílios de Letty tremeram, os olhos pidões encarando a amiga. 

— Não se preocupe, sua paixão secreta pelo irmão mais novo do seu chefe está segura comigo, palavra de escoteira! 

— Você nem sabe fazer uma fogueira, que escoteira o quê. 

Foi durante as novidades sobre o tal do adorável Seokmin, com o sorriso mais lindo e todas as outras características marcantes que Violet martelava nos ouvidos de ____. Enfim, foi no meio da divagação de Letty que o celular da mesma notificou, mais algo sobre a Moonlit Mug. De repente, as conversas extremamente descritivas sobre Seokmin pareciam em segundo plano, dando lugar a um suspense empolgante que pairava no ar, ligado aos planos futuros que os donos do estabelecimento preparavam para a cafeteria.

Enquanto ____ já havia passado os olhos por tudo que estava descrito no post, Letty o lia em voz alta:

— Bebidas não presentes no cardápio, específicas para cada tipo de fantasia. Colaboração com o labirinto assombrado… poderão aceitar o desafio na entrada… aos que desvendarem o mistério com maior precisão e rapidez… caramba, prêmio surpresa!  

— Ok, quem quer que tenha pensado nisso foi longe. 

— Longe e espertamente, todo mundo vai no labirinto. Até nós duas planejamos ir! 

— Acho que isso vai complementar o movimento… O engajamento deles é bastante razoável, mas essas ideias devem fazer o lugar encher realmente. 

— Então, senhorita ____, agora está mais animada pra encontrar uma fantasia melhor do que a sua ideia mixuruca de fada? 

Embora fosse arriscado sair em busca de fantasia apenas dois finais de semana antes da data comemorativa mais esperada da cidade, as mulheres decidiram encarar o desafio. O resultado, no entanto, foi — por falta de melhores palavras — trágico. 

Os corredores das lojas estavam repletos de opções limitadas, predominantemente inclinadas para o lado provocante, suas opções se resumiram a repetitiva variedade de opções sexy: enfermeira, pirata, mágica, bruxa (pois, de acordo com o lojista, era necessário ter as duas opções), vampira… Nada contra expôr uma parte ou outra do corpo ou à própria expressão da sensualidade, mas tanto Violet quanto ____ eram mulheres decididas que buscavam algo além dos clichês. 

— Acho que a gente devia pintar você de violeta, comprar uma peruca chanel loira e um moletom azul. Seria infalível — ____ suspirou, realmente começando a cogitar a ideia e pensando se suas habilidades de persuasão seriam o suficiente para convencer Violet de se fantasiar como sua homônima. 

— Sim, claro, ____. Infalível, inflável e você seria o Willy Wonka. Ou melhor, um Oompa Loompa. 

Acho que ela não gostou… As possibilidades iam e vinham na mente de ____, aquilo era difícil. 

Aos poucos as opções de lojas se esgotaram, portanto foi necessária uma pausa para recarregar as energias: o que significava um pequeno lanche com sobremesa, de preferência um sundae. O melhor da cidade ficava praticamente escondido numa das duas transversais às mais movimentadas do bairro, nada que uma boa garimpagem de Violet nas redes sociais não pudesse descobrir. E era aquilo que ela estava fazendo agora: buscando em cada canto da internet por alguma loja. Qualquer coisa para que não retornassem ao terror das enfermeiras sexy. 

Foi dessa forma que, navegando pelos becos repletos de pequenos comércios nos arredores do centro, ____ e Violet descobriram uma verdadeira jóia escondida. Essa loja, conforme indicava o Instagram e as indicações recém dadas pelos lojistas próximos , era um estabelecimento peculiar cuja marca fora fundada pelo talentoso Ji-Young. 

Naquela época específica do ano, a DRAKO, temporariamente deixando de lado o lançamento frenético de coleções inovadoras, dedicava-se a algo mais mágico: fantasias que transcendiam a oferta convencional das grandes lojas de departamento. O ambiente acolhedor da loja, a decoração caprichada e a atenção aos detalhes eram evidentes logo na entrada, proporcionando uma experiência de compra única. O local prometia não apenas trajes para o Halloween, mas uma imersão em criatividade e originalidade, características que ressoavam com as mulheres determinadas a encontrar algo especial para a festividade.

A descoberta inesperada foi mais que agradável, assim que passaram pela porta do local, ____ e Violet foram bem recebidas e guiadas a sessão que precisavam. 

A loja não era pequena, porém também não era uma enorme loja de rede. Na área indicada, as prateleiras possuíam os mais variados acessórios, com pequenas placas com sugestões de com que fantasias usar. 

— Esse é o chapéu do chapeleiro mais fiel que eu vi na vida — Letty experimentou a peça e encarou seu reflexo no espelho. 

— Parece que finalmente encontramos um lugar que pode suprir nossas expectativas…

— Suprir? Isso vai muito além! Você por acaso viu a fantasia do Batman? É uma clássica, mas parece que a pessoa que vestir vai virar o cavaleiro das trevas de verdade! — A menção ao universo dos quadrinhos deixou-as animadas. 

Ainda mais quando encontraram dois expositores com personagens que adoravam. 

— Letty, precisa ser essa…

— Mas é masculina, vai ficar larga nos lugares errados. 

— É, você tem razão… 

O suspiro audível e simultâneo das mulheres não passou despercebido. 

— Boa tarde! Já foram atendidas? 

— Sim, mas tentamos explorar a loja primeiro.

— Bom, agora vocês estarão sob os meus cuidados. Me chamo Ji-Young — enquanto apertavam as mãos cordialmente e se apresentavam, as jovens puderam cair na percepção que o próprio fundador da marca estava atendendo-as. — Então, Violet e ____, há algo que tenha chamado a atenção de vocês? 

O homem riu ao notar a direção em que as duas olharam. 

— Temos as mesmas com ajustes para todos os tipos de corpos, querem que eu traga para experimentarem? 

— Sim!

Não houve arrependimentos quanto às fantasia, a qualidade era impecável, obtiveram os tamanhos corretos e bem ajustados, e o preço correspondia às peças. E, bom, poderiam usar novamente. Mesmo que precisassem ir em algum evento de cosplay para isso. Letty e ____ saíram do estabelecimento satisfeitas, garantindo que voltariam novamente. 

Continuaram a explorar a cidade por mais um tempo. Enquanto passeavam, puderam ver o local onde o labirinto estava sendo elaborado, situado a cerca de duas quadras de distância do possivelmente novo local favorito das duas mulheres, o Moonlit Mug. O que justificava o tal enigma que seria entregue ao final do labirinto, a proximidade alimentando a intrigante promessa do que seria desvendado ao final do percurso.

No caminho, inevitavelmente passaram em frente ao dito café, mas não podiam ver nada do que havia do lado de dentro. Apenas a visão limitada ao letreiro com o nome do estabelecimento intensificava a curiosidade das mulheres, incapazes de espiar o que se desenrolava no interior, o que aumentava a curiosidade de ambas, aguardando com ainda mais expectativas pela inauguração. 

— Eles postaram fotos sobre como vai ser o lugar nos stories, mas mantêm tudo escondido. Sem graça. 

— Bom, nem todos os moradores daqui acompanham eles como você, Letty. Talvez a graça seja essa, pelo menos alguém pode ficar genuinamente surpreso quando vir a decoração.

Violet reclamou sobre a demora para a abertura do lugar, era engraçado ver a amiga tão ansiosa para “finalmente” ter um local adequado para os passeios recorrentes delas, um que não fosse o apartamento de uma das duas ou a única lanchonete da cidade que tinha uma boa variedade de sobremesas no cardápio. Porém, além da ansiedade, ____ identificou rapidamente que todas as reclamações envolvendo comida estavam atreladas ao fato de que já havia algum tempo que fizeram uma refeição decente — qualquer uma excluiria o lanche do intervalo da caça às fantasias como uma refeição. 

— Que tal ir lá pra casa e fazer pizza? Tenho algumas massas congeladas da última vez que fizemos demais. E, como bônus, eu deixo você me contar mais sobre o tal Dokyeom…

— Você já tinha me convencido na pizza. 

Foi um pedido inesperado que tirou a segunda-feira de ____ da monotonia cotidiana. E curiosamente ele não veio de Violet, que, dentre muitas coisas, a mais recente que havia implorado era arranjar um encontro duplo para que ela pudesse ter uma desculpa para convidar Dokyeom como seu acompanhante. “Convida logo ele pra sair”, foi a única resposta sensata que ____ pôde dar em meio à breve indignação com a desnecessária elaboração de planos de Violet. Era incomum ver a mulher confiante ser reduzida a um espírito adolescente, com todo o medo da rejeição e nervosismo.

De qualquer forma, isso havia sido resolvido e o possível futuro casal sairia naquela sexta-feira. ____ se deu alguns tapinhas no ombro pelo bom trabalho como conselheira amorosa. 

Após mais um dia qualquer no trabalho (reestruturando toda a escrita de um autor cuja criatividade compensa a falta de organização ao usar o Word. ____ não poderia cobrar do homem uma sabedoria avançada em diagramação quando ele tinha um emprego fixo e ainda assim conseguia cumprir prazos com a editora.), ____ chegou ao saguão do prédio em que residia desejando apenas alcançar o conforto do seu sofá o mais rápido possível, porém seu rival não humano a estava esperando. Educadamente sentado, o rabo balançando hipnoticamente e ela jurava que havia sim um sorriso naquelas feições felinas. Assim que deu o primeiro passo rumo às escadas, ele miou melodiosamente e se levantou. 

— Ok, pequena criatura, o que quer de mim hoje? Eu só tenho uma bolsa cheia das minhas coisas, nada pra gatinhos adorados da vizinhança. 

Então a guerra silenciosa começou, ele ficou dançando irritantemente no primeiro degrau da única escada que levava aos andares superiores, desafiando-a a passar por ele sem pisar em sua frágil cauda ou ser cruelmente atacada. Não que ele tenha a atacado alguma vez, mas ____ se sentia assim. 

— Sabe, eu gostava de gatos até te conhecer. Agora eu acho que gatos podem destruir meus pertences a qualquer momento. 

Mais alguns miados. E nenhuma mudança na dinâmica. Daquela vez, ____ desistiu da luta. Ela só precisava esperar alguns momentos até que o porteiro retornasse, afinal. 

Foi em seu momento de espera que ____ foi abordada pela senhora Wytte. A mulher sempre saía para comprar coisas pouco antes do sol se pôr ou bem cedo de manhã, havia dito que o sol muito forte no meio da tarde faz mal para sua pele idosa. ____ se preocupou alguma vezes, vendo-a voltar no começo a noite, porém a senhora a tranquilizou mostrando seu pequeno kit de sobrevivência na cidade: um botão de pânico e um canivete no chaveiro, além de um spray de pimenta poderoso sempre ao seu alcance. Como presente no primeiro aniversário que ____  comemorou no prédio, senhora Wytte deu a ela um batom que, na verdade, era um canivete. 

Violet adorou e perguntou à senhora onde ela achou, ao invés de contar a ela, na semana seguinte Letty também ganhou um. 

Senhora Wytte animou-se assim que avistou ____ sentada numa das poltronas macias do saguão. 

— Que bom ver você, querida! Chegou agora do trabalho? 

— Tem um tempo, na verdade… — a mais velha acompanhou o olhar que ____ lançou ao felino em guarda na escada. 

— O que o pequenino fez desta vez? — Pronta para ouvir as reclamações recorrentes da mais nova, a Wytte acomodou-se na outra poltrona, deixando seu carrinho cheio no espaço entre as duas. 

— Ah, eu simplesmente não queria passar pelo processo de subornar ele para sair dali. 

— Oh, não se preocupe, Adonis vai deixar essa velha senhora aqui ser acompanhada pela sua vizinha favorita, não é? 

E mais uma vez o infeliz miou. Como ele pode ter tanta educação para responder, mas ser tão inconveniente? 

____ apenas suspirou ao vê-lo abanar seu rabo escada acima. A mais nova tomou o carrinho pesado das mãos da senhora, que agradeceu docemente e guiou o caminho até o andar das duas. 

— Já falei à Selene que ele deveria ter algum entretenimento, mas ela deixa ele vagando como um gato de rua. 

— Se ela cuidasse tão bem dele como cuida do cabelo…

— Oh, eu empresto uma erva ou outra para os shampoos dela. Não acho que você precise, mas talvez aceite como parte da compensação pelo que pretendo te pedir. 

Já haviam passado do primeiro andar de apartamentos, o infeliz Adonis havia desaparecido antes mesmo delas alcançarem o próximo lance de escadas, para a alegria de ____. A companhia da senhora Wytte era agradável e ela sempre pedia coisas bastante simples à mais jovem, ____ sempre precisa recusar quaisquer pagamentos monetários, se contentando com chás, ervas, pães ou doces. 

— Eu faria muitas coisas por mais um pouco daquele blend de passiflora, camomila e capim-limão. 

— Para isso você só precisava me pedir, querida. Enfim, venha, entre aqui comigo. 

Foram poucas as vezes que ____ adentrou o aconchegante lar da senhora Wytte, porém tinha muito apreço pelo espaço. Era inesperadamente moderno, mas ainda assim parecia com uma "casa de vó", com um sofá macio, bugigangas fofas, plantinhas e bordados. 

Já tendo aprendido que não precisava de convite, ____ seguiu com o carrinho da vizinha até o espaço que delimitava a cozinha, separado da sala por uma bela mesa de madeira. 

Juntas começaram a desempacotar as compras do passeio de Amelia Wytte. Haviam pacotes que ____ identificou como parte das misturas para fortalecedoras usados nos inúmeros vasos de plantas da varanda. Além disso, havia itens mais pessoais. 

— Vou viajar em breve, pretendo chegar na casa do meu filho antes do que normalmente faço, queremos fazer uma surpresa pra ele. Minha nora providenciou tudo, ela é um doce, me mima bastante. Normalmente eu peço a Selene para que ela cuide das minha coisas, mas ela tem estado ocupada desde o início do ano. E agora em outubro, está ainda mais. Entenderei se você não puder, mas gostaria que cuidasse das minhas plantas por algumas semanas, posso pagar a você.

— Nem pensar! — Amelia se assustou com a breve indignação de ____. — Desculpe o susto, mas nunca que eu vou aceitar dinheiro pra cuidar das suas plantas. Não é só regar e usar seus preparos? Só vou precisar saber o que usar em cada uma e em que horários devo fazer. 

A senhora Wytte não se sentiu exatamente surpresa, conhecendo a vizinha, era esperado que ela aceitasse. Contudo, havia muitas diretrizes a serem seguidas e sua única preocupação era que a jovem pudesse se confundir. O que as levou a uma longa conversa e uma lista com especificações por cores, horários e muitos nomes de plantas que ____ jamais saberia pronunciar corretamente. Tendo em vista que Amelia já havia colhido tudo que estava na pequena estufa que havia montado no terraço do prédio, bastava que ____ cuidasse dos vasos na parte interna e externa do apartamento. 

1 - Posicionar os vasos internos para que peguem sol por algumas horas, de preferência pela manhã;  2 - Estimulantes devem ser colocados seguindo as cores indicadas, no caso de trocar, ligue e avise.  3 - Sempre regar as plantas indicadas com a cor vermelha durante o dia; 4 - Regar as indicadas com a cor azul durante a noite;  5 - Podar as plantas suspensas;  6 - Usar o spray do vidro preto em todas as plantas (caso acabe, há uma receita no mesmo armário em que todos os suprimentos para as plantas estarão, junto dos ingredientes);  7 - Sempre expulsar o Adonis, basta convencer ele com alguns snacks do armário de suprimentos, já há uma caixa preparada;  8 - Manter as janelas da varanda fechadas, apenas abrir as frestas de ventilação. 

Foi no sábado, mesmo dia em que a senhora Wytte viajou — após alguns bons dias do que ____ chamou carinhosamente de treinamento botânico intensivo —, que Violet descobriu a nova vocação da amiga. 

— É meio fofo você ser babá de plantas. 

— Não sou babá. Quer dizer, são vivas, mas são plantas. 

— Não deixa de ser fofo. 

— Que seja, apenas fique aqui e seja meu apoio moral. Eu nem sei bem como é esse tal de Junhui.

Dentre as simples tarefas que a sua adorável vizinha havia lhe dado, a única que causou algum tipo de estranhamento foi aquela. Entregar uma caixa fechada a um dos “clientes” da senhora, o único com o qual ela não conseguiria remarcar a entrega, visto que ele precisaria dos ingredientes dentro do período em que ela estaria fora da cidade. 

____ não tinha medo, exatamente. Ela teve aulas de defesa pessoal o suficiente para conseguir se defender e também tinha aquele presente da senhora Wytte consigo o tempo inteiro. Mas ainda assim era um desconhecido. Nem mesmo as muitas descrições sobre a personalidade agradável dele convenceu ____ de que ela estaria segura recebendo-o no apartamento da mais velha, uma vez que a dita caixa não poderia ser transportada por outro senão o tal Junhui. Tudo bem que era pesada, porém com a ajuda de Violet ela certamente teria conseguido carregá-la, mas fora quase proibida de fazê-lo. Algo sobre prejudicar o que quer que havia na caixa. 

Tais circunstâncias levaram ____ à conclusão que ter Violet consigo era uma boa garantia. 

— Será que a gente vai ter que esperar muito tempo por ele? — O problema era que Letty se entediava com muita facilidade. 

—  Bom, se for melhorar sua situação, deixo você falar sobre todo o seu encontro de ontem mais uma vez. 

— Você é muito boazinha, então vou me certificar de me aproveitar disso pra que ninguém mais faça — Letty foi acertada por uma das almofadas com cheirinho de lavanda da senhora Wytte, mas deixou sua vingança vir em forma de uma longa e detalhada narração. 

____ podia resumir Seokmin como um adorável pretendente para sua melhor amiga, alguém que, aparentemente, estava à altura do quão bem tratada ela deveria ser, considerando que ele memorizou o restaurante favorito, a sorveteria próxima ao parque em que ela gostava de fazer caminhadas noturnas. 

— Eu pensei em convidar ele pra ir na nova cafeteria, mas não quero estragar nossa experiência. Fico com medo de que, caso dê errado, o lugar ficar atrelado a coisas negativas. 

E Letty estava fazendo novamente, era uma atitude que frustrava ____ em todas as vezes. 

— Primeiro, obrigada pela consideração. Segundo, você tá sendo pessimista de novo e antecipando situações negativas que você nem sabe se vão acontecer, Violet. Se você sentir que é algo que combina com os dois, ótimo, só chame. Senão, nós duas aproveitamos. 

Ambas ficaram pensativas por um curto período, uma pensando em meios de ajudar a amiga a não pensar tão negativamente sobre uma relação que tem parecido genuína e a outra pensando algumas autocríticas por estar sendo tão descrente, logo quando tudo está indo bem. O momento reflexivo foi longo apenas o bastante para que a campainha tocasse. 

A dupla se encarou, diferente de quando é há o impasse de quem vai ir buscar a pizza, ____ era a única opção para abrir a porta. Não sem antes conferir através do olho mágico. Dentre as características estavam: altura acima da média, o cabelo um pouco longo, castanho e com mechas loiras na frente, pele um pouco bronzeada. E, aparentemente, o diferencial seriam as marcas de nascença no rosto, um próxima ao lábio e outra em alguma região abaixo do olho e ao lado do nariz. Entretanto, observar tantos detalhes pela mínima abertura circular na porta era uma tarefa que ____ comprovou ser impossível. 

Com um pouco de incentivo de Violet, ____ finalmente abriu a porta. 

A troca estranha de cumprimentos foi superada quando ____ convidou Junhui para entrar no apartamento. 

— A senhora Wytte deve ser falado, mas sou ____…

— Eu sou a Violet, e acho que te conheço… — para aumentar os constrangimentos daquela tarde, Letty passou alguns bons segundos encarando o, aparentemente, tímido homem. 

— Ok… Obrigado por tirar um tempo pra me receber, realmente são produtos importante. A senhora Wytte é a única na região que produz essas coisas com qualidade. 

— Sem problemas! Ela tem bastante cuidado com tudo que faz aqui, mas acho que você já sabe disso — mais alguns segundos de silêncio estranho se seguiram, sob o olhar semi-atento de Violet, cuja atenção era mais dada a tela do celular. — Enfim, a caixa está aqui perto do armário de suprimentos, vem. 

Junhui era educado, porém parecia tão travado quanto ____ naquela estranha interação. Com um pouco da ajuda da jovem, Junhui acomodou a caixa em seus braços antes de se dirigir a ____ novamente. 

— Seria falta de educação pedir ajuda com as portas? Eu pretendia vir com o Shua-hyung, mas ele estava bastante ocupado… — sem saber detalhes, nem precisar deles, ____ apenas concordou.

Contudo, seu caminho foi barrado depois de alguns passos pelo corredor. Faltava menos da metade do caminho até a porta que levava às escadas, mas aquela criaturinha resolveu aparecer. 

— Adonis, não é hora de me atrapalhar — curiosamente, Junhui foi quem havia se pronunciado. 

— Finalmente, achei que fosse a única que ele perseguisse — o homem riu, desviando do gato, que os seguiu de qualquer forma. 

— Eu sempre tenho que tomar cuidado pra ele não enfiar as garras nas minhas roupas… 

— Só roupas? Ele ataca tudo que me pertence, acho que ele me odeia… 

— Você acha, ____? — Violet, que antes havia estado em silêncio, pareceu ter voltado ao mundo real. — Com certeza ele tem algo contra você. 

— Ele realmente só tem algum respeito pela senhora Wytte, acreditem — e, tendo observado a interação da mais velha com o felino várias vezes, ____ realmente concordava com Junhui. 

Com Adonis em seu encalço, os três alcançaram o carro de Junhui, estacionado em frente a portaria. O estranhamento foi levado embora assim que a compatibilidade no quesito “ser vítima de Adonis” foi encontrada. Portanto, a despedida não seria tão estranha. 

— Sabe, ainda não tenho certeza de onde te conheço, mas vou descobrir. 

— É assim que você dá tchau? — Bufando pra Violet, ____ se voltou para o homem, que achava a situação engraçada. 

— Talvez a gente só tenha se esbarrado pela cidade, não é tão difícil de acontecer. 

— Mas seu rosto tá tão nítido da minha memória… Você trabalha perto da rua doze? — E Letty continuava sua investigação. 

Mesmo sob o olhar desestimulador de ____, se Junhui não se incomodava com as perguntas, Violet não via motivos para parar. 

— Na verdade, nem perto nem longe. Mas é impossível que você tenha me visto lá, o lugar ainda não abriu, espera… 

Abrindo a porta do carro, Junhui alcançou com facilidade o porta-luvas, tirando de dentro dele um cartão de visitas, que foi rapidamente pego por Violet. Após uma breve olhada, ela pegou o celular novamente. 

— Eu sabia! — Para saciar a curiosidade de ____, o cartão foi estendido a ela. 

A logo de uma xícara em um pires, com o desenho de uma pequena lua minguante. As letras estilizadas indicavam o nome do estabelecimento: Moonlit Mug. 

Que mundinho pequeno. Pensou ____. A mulher desconhecia que tipos de probabilidades poderiam ser calculadas pra isso, então se contentou com o prazer da coincidência. Violet, por outro lado, estava cintilante. Coisas como essa sempre deixam ela alegre, quer seja encontrar acidentalmente uma moeda no chão ou a situação que havia acabado de acontecer, ____ sempre observou que a amiga se deixava levar pela satisfação que os momentos causavam. 

— Tá vendo, o instagram me recomendou a conta e eu sigo desde então…— a mulher mostrou a tela do smartphone pra Junhui. 

Ele ficou curiosamente feliz com a descoberta, teria algo a contar aos outros quando voltasse ao lugar. Eles estavam atualmente um tanto desanimados com as poucas interações nas redes sociais, provavelmente os que passavam mais tempo cuidando disso até saberiam quem era Violet, sendo ela a pessoa que mais curtia e comentava as postagens. 

— É a primeira vez que encontro alguém que saiba do lugar sem ter sido um de nós que contou! Espero que possam aparecer na inauguração. 

— Não se preocupe, na inauguração e no labirinto dia 31 pra ganhar o que quer que seja o prêmio! — Aquilo animou Junhui ainda mais. 

Afinal, foi um dos que pensou que seria uma boa ideia se associarem ao labirinto dos 3racha, frequentado por quase todos da cidade há quatro anos. Foi uma novidade agradável na época e o projeto cresceu continuamente, mesmo que indiretamente, todos que os conheciam haviam ajudado de alguma forma. Portanto, eles não tardaram a aceitar a proposta quando Mingyu e Minghao proporam. Seria uma ajuda mútua. Uma ideia nova para o labirinto e um marketing criativo pra Moonlit Mug. 

— Ok, é a primeira que dou um desses também — disse Junhui entregando um voucher pra cada uma. 

— Bolinhos grátis! — Desta vez, ____ demonstrou a animação. — Geralmente a Letty me mostra as coisas que tem na conta, e se forem os mesmos bolinhos que eu vi…

— Provavelmente são, ficamos testando algumas receitas. Os sabores são meio que surpresa, na hora só vão te perguntar se você tem alergia ou odeia algum dos sabores do cardápio. 

— Ok, qual a chance de você dar mais um, hein? — Por mais bobo que parecesse, Violet era ótima em persuadir pessoas pra ganhar coisas assim. 

Cupons, amostras. E vouchers. 

— Ok, mas vão comprar as bebidas, pelo menos? — As duas concordaram, rindo. — O segredo é usarem um no primeiro andar e outro no segundo. Ou em dias diferentes, já que vale só por uns dias a partir da inauguração. 

— E a gente promete também não contar pro seu chefe, tá? — Violet fingiu sussurrar.

Foi a vez do homem rir. 

— Ah, relaxem. Dificilmente vou ter problemas por isso! 

— Agora que não estamos mais no clima desconfortável e você conseguiu sua caixa misteriosa, acho que podemos nos despedir de verdade!

Com alguns acenos e tchaus, e um Junhui falando sobre estar atrasado para levar os ingredientes para a cafeteria, uma quase — e muito peculiar — amizade foi criada. 

Agora, além de um gatinho fofo, uma festa à fantasia e um possível prêmio misterioso, o Halloween de Violet e ____ na Moonlit Mug contaria com bolinhos gratuitos e, como dizia no cartão que ele as entregou, um “Moon Junhui – barista e padeiro” como o que ambas classificaram mais tarde como conhecido próximo. 

notas: primeiramente, sim, violet e dk (criei ela na minha cabeça e, no momento, ela estava cheia de lee seokmin pra todos os lados, então temos isso). moon junhui. não há necessidade de mais palavras. essa é bem HALLOWEEN, mas segue-se para depois da data também, então tudo ok, tudo beleza. de novo, clichê. é strangers to lovers (um friends no meio do caminho também). amo gatos, porém a função do adonis é essa aí. revisado, porém, caso alguém leia e ache algum erro...

“What time is it?” I ask myself as I look at the clock only to see that it was almost midnight. I know that I wouldn’t be able to get myself to fall asleep until I know he gets back safe.

I get up from my bed, shivering as my feet meet the cold surface of the floor. I then make sure my bed was made before leaving.  I turn the handle with one hand, while my other was placed on the surface of the door to silence it from making any noise that would wake Mr. Hanekoma up.

Once I successfully open the door, without making any sounds I head down the stairs to the kitchen in hopes of finding something to eat. So while I was looking through the fridge I didn’t notice that I was no longer alone until that person spoke, “Nova what are you doing up?” I jump upon hear them speak.

I turn around to see Mr. Hanekoma leaning against the counter with concern filled eyes. 

“I couldn’t sleep so I decided to get something that will help me go to sleep, sorry if I woke you Mr. Hanekoma,” I apologize to him. He then gestures for me to come sit in the seat next to him I nod, once I sit next to him he asks me again.

I then decide to tell him what was really bothering me. “I am worried about Josh, he has never been late. I am worried that something might have happened to him.” I explain trying my best to keep my tears hidden.

I take a deep breath before continuing, “I can’t shake this feeling that someone is trying to harm him, and that makes it even harder for me to sleep.”

Mr. Hanekoma then gets up from his seat, I look at him trying to figure out what he is trying to do. It wasn’t until he set down a cup of coffee, I then thank him before taking a sip of the relaxing drink. 

I was about to say something but Mr. Hanekoma intercepts, “Joshua is strong he has been through tough times, so Nova you don’t have to worry” I just smile and nod taking another sip of my drink before setting it back down.

I stair at my cup seeing the ripples if the warm liquid as I recall some unwanted memories.

“Nova, come on it is time to head home” my mother calls me, I run up to her and my big sister. My mom’s name was Eclipsis and my sisters was Yuna, my mom had long snowy white hair that reached to her knees she also had scarlet-pink eyes. My sister had the same hair color as my mom, but instead of scarlet-pink eyes like my mom she had a pair of deep crimson eyes.

“Hey mom can we come visit again?” I ask her, we had come from our home where our dad lived to the home of the Draconai. She gives me a soft smile “we will see, you know it isn’t safe to come here that often because of the chance of him finding us.” when she said “him” her voice had so much venom in it made my body tremble.

I nod, she then turns to the stone structure and as she was about to open the portal for us to head back home it happened. One minute we were together going back home the next my mom is forcing us to go separate ways. 

That was the last time I ever saw my mother and sister, by the time I was able to travel though dimensions the dimension of the Draconai was gone.

I still remember the man that had caused that, he was the one I was worried about harming Joshua. Before I was sent through the portal to this world I heard his name, Beleth. even the thought of him angers and worries me.

I am brought out of my thoughts by Mr. Hanekoma heading for the door. “Don’t stay up too long Nova” he tells me before finally leaving to get some sleep.

Minutes pass before I decided to head back to my room to attempt to get some sleep, so once I finish washing my cup. I head to my room passing by Joshua’s on the way, I glance at his room one more time before finally closing my door.  I then head to my bed and lay down once my head reaches the pillow I fall asleep.

Well that is the end of the first part, let me know what you thought about it. So another note, Nova is actually the daughter of Muzan Kibutsuji and Eclipsis Kibutsuji, Kobayashi was Nova’s mothers last name before she married Muzan. The reason I didn’t add that last name is because one they are total different eras. Two is I wasn’t sure about having that last name yet, I might add it later on.

Also you may have seen the race that Nova is, Draconai are a species I thought of. If you want to know more about them you can read my book titled Draconai or you could read the story.

Well with that said, I hope you enjoyed. I also plan on releasing the second part today...I am not fully sure.

Half Life: the game everyone exists because of. "Reality" is a complicated mess, and the Science Team can only really start to untangle it all after they finally leave the game. Where are they now, though, if not a video game world that constricts them to very particular roles they were meant for? Who are they now after the game, if not NPCs, or the player? What exactly does it mean, to not be real? They may be living post-game domestic bliss, but that doesn't take away from the things they went through. They've got a lot to unpack.

Liberta: With one last strike from my sword, the skeleton turned back into a human

Girl: A human…?

Liberta: His true form was that of a human. He was a kind man who cared a lot about his son

Liberta: So he ended up cursed to be trapped on the ghost ship in the form of a skeleton

“Is this about me leaving Rhino on Midtown’s front porch?” Vernon demanded. “Because if it is, I’ll have you know that I left him in good hands—”

 "Calm down, Wonder Kid," Fury said. He didn't look amused like Vernon had hoped, which meant that whatever he'd come here to talk about was serious. Well, what else should he have expected from the head of S.H.I.E.L.D.? "It's not about that. Well—not entirely. It's about the good hands you mentioned."

Vernon narrowed his eyes. He'd met Fury a few times before, and never during favorable conditions. The last time he's seen the guy, Spider-Man had almost been pummeled to death by none other than the Goblin himself. "They said something about bringing him to S.H.I.E.L.D.," he muttered. "I should have guessed."

Fury didn't respond, instead reaching inside his jacket to bring out an envelope. He threw the open envelope onto the table in front of Vernon, making a few pictures half spill out from inside. "You know what that is?"

Vernon glanced at him suspiciously before slowly picking up the pictures and going through them. Each of them was a glossy shot of various locations in New York, and all of them had a major recurring theme—the places were completely trashed. Overturned cars, building walls with holes in them, bent lampposts. Wearily, he set the pictures down face-up on the table, then looked up at the man, who stared back with an unreadable expression on his face.

A beat passed. "Was that a rhetorical question?"

"Jesus, kid," Fury muttered. "All of those pictures were taken moments after a fight between you and one of your fanclub members. Now, I'm not saying I don't appreciate you taking care of a couple of minor criminals in the city—"

"Minor criminals?"

"—but I can't let you treat the place like it's your neighborhood playpen," he finished. Next to him, the pretty agent-slash-counselor sat with her legs folded, her surprisingly stern gaze fixed on Vernon. The attention made him squirm. "S.H.I.E.L.D. is a global defense organization, for god's sake. We don't have the time to clean up after kids who don't know even know their three Rs."

"Let me guess," Vernon said, "rock, roll, ramble?"

"Even your wisecracks aren't funny anymore, kid." Fury shook his head.

Ouch. "That hurt my feelings."

The man glared at him out of his one good eye. "You can't keep going like this forever," he said. "You're on your way to be one of the greats—don't look at me like that, hell if I'm gonna repeat that—but the big guys take care of their messes. They don't leave poor innocent civilians behind to get new paint jobs on their Kias. All that damage your careless fighting left behind, who's gonna take care of that?"

"Insurance?" Vernon suggested. Agent Fox cracked a smile, warming his insides. Her sitting aside in silence as Fury chewed him out was a little unnerving. He wondered if looking on silently while high-rankers lectured kids was something she had to do regularly. You gotta have a heart of ice to sit through that.

"You are," Fury said grimly, and Vernon blinked. "And you're gonna start today."

"What was it that you really wanted?" Vernon asked, crossing his arms over his chest, making his t-shirt stretch tight over his biceps. He really needed to go shopping. "You can't tell me the world's best spy came all the way to some backwater high school just to lecture a kid about cleanliness being next to godliness."

"You're a special case, Parker," Fury said, and Vernon placed a hand over his heart, mockingly going aw. "And you're right. I'm not here just to lecture you about your repeated careless mistakes, I'm here to help you fix them."

Vernon looked at him suspiciously, already wary of what was to come next. "And how do you propose I do that?"

"You've already shown me multiple times you can't do it yourself," Fury said. "Look, kid, here's the thing: you have a problem, and I have a problem. I also happen to have a joint solution to both."

Vernon slumped in his chair. Here it comes. "What problem could you possibly have? Nuclear warheads threatening to destroy civilians' Kias in Manhattan?"

"You really gotta work on those one-liners." Fury sighed. "There's a group of kids in the Helicarrier like you—up-and-coming superheroes in need of some real-world experience. They've got the training you need to handle jobs with efficiency, and you have the practical experience. They've got the goods—just like you—but nowhere real to practice them."

"You mean those guys," Vernon said, sitting up and recalling the three who had helped him in the fight against Rhino. "You mean—you want me to teach them?"

"I want you to work with them," Fury said. "Train with them, fight with them, lead what could be the next greatest team of post-humans."

"So basically, your solution is to sic a bunch of newbies on me as some kind of damage control," Vernon said angrily. "And what if I refuse?"

"Nothing," the spy answered simply. "You're not under S.H.I.E.L.D.'s official jurisdiction yet, so I can't do anything to you even if I want to—unless, of course, I absolutely have to. You're allowed to walk out of here right now, but I can't guarantee that that's gonna work out for you."

Vernon considered this. He knew a threat when he heard one, even when it wasn't a yell of SPIDER-MAN, I'M GONNA KILL YOU, but he also knew that Nick Fury's threats weren't always real threats. However, he did not like his chances.

"As long as they stay out of my business," he muttered, knowing that was the one thing they were least likely to do. He knew how closely teams operated, and it didn't take his spider sense to figure out that this team was going to be much nosier than that. He recalled the annoyed scowl on that Nova guy's face, and internally shuddered.

"It's a deal," Fury said pleasantly, as if Vernon had any choice but to accept the so-called 'deal'. "I'll be checking in regularly, so bear in mind that I'll know if you ever kill one of your teammates and throw their body into the East River."

"I would never go to that much trouble," he replied equally pleasantly, getting up. Then he glanced at the clock, and scowled. "I can't believe you made me skip my biology quiz for five minutes of parental guidance."

"Oh, I'd never lie to a teacher, kid," Fury said, patting his shoulder as he passed him. "A counseling session I promised, and a counseling session you will get."

Vernon glanced at the other agent in dismay, but she only smiled—whether in amusement or reassurance, he couldn't tell. She clicked her pen, picking up the pad, her eyes twinkling. "Settle down, Spider-Man," she said. "This will only take forty minutes."

Vernon almost considered opting out of eating in the cafeteria, but changed his mind at the last moment, knowing it was the only time other than first period biology he got to see Joshua on Mondays. He desperately needed to vent, and his bespectacled friend was the only one who even came close to understanding to the layers of his identity, one of which was a deep-rooted hatred for the universal authority on superheroes.

So he stalked right into lunch, barely noticing the gunk of whatever-it-was thwacking into his plastic tray, and headed for their usual table in the corner of the cafeteria. He didn't need to go that far to get to Joshua, however, as the blue-haired boy almost walked smack into him as he made his way there.

"Woah, woah, steady," Joshua said, grabbing his bicep to prevent them from colliding. "Why are you making like a steamroller towards that innocent little table? And what the hell were you during biology? What was that about?"

Vernon cast a careful glance around the cafeteria, at the crowd of people, one of which could easily overhear them in the close range. "I'll give you the details later," he murmured. "The cusp of the matter is: Fury blackmailed me into signing up for a team activity."

"Wait, wait, wait, Nick Fury?" Joshua asked in awe as they walked over to the table, gripping his tray tightly and hunching his shoulders, leaning slightly towards Vernon in interest. "You mean he was here, in this school?"

"Not even the first time, Josh."

"Not the—" Joshua shook his head, as if shooing away the thoughts. "Okay. Filing that information away for further perusal later. So you're telling me Nick Fury, super-spy, came to this place—" he spread his arms, indicating the school— "to talk to you. Man, sometimes I forget Spider-Man's supposed to be a household name."

"Shut up," Vernon hissed, casting a furtive glance at a heavily tattooed blonde who passed them by closely. "But yeah. And he asked me to team up with these noobs from the S.H.I.E.L.D. future program or something."

Joshua frowned. "But that's kind of cool, though, right?"

"Not if they're gonna slow me down," he replied. "Spider-Man's always operated alone, and—wait, what the hell?"

He stopped in his tracks right before the table, a stunned expression on his face. Joshua raised his eyebrows, following his gaze to the table, which was, surprisingly enough, already occupied.

She was there, of course, at her usual seat, the third from the left, except she was not alone. There was another girl, with dark hair and piercing eyes, picking at a soggy fry with her lips pursed. Next to her was a brooding blond with freckles that stood out against his shockingly pale skin. Last, but not the least, was the boy with the tanned skin who was making Vernon's best friend laugh so hard she was doubled over, a familiar cocky edge to his smile.

"Ah," Joshua said.

Lucy Langdon was one of Vernon's, and therefore Spider-Man's, biggest pressure points. She was also one of the only ones who had been left virtually untouched by all his superhero shenanigans, and he wanted to keep it that way. Though she was smart enough keep up with a few new trainees, as far as Vernon was concerned, she was strictly off-limits. Even to superheroes who could fly and called themselves Nova.

Vernon stalked over to the table and slammed his tray on the surface so hard he made everyone jump. Then he glared at the boy sitting next to her, the one with the bronzed skin, as Joshua stood by awkwardly. "You're in my seat," he said pointedly.

The boy cocked a lazy eyebrow, gesturing to the unoccupied seats opposite him. "I don't see your name on it."

Vernon ground his teeth, raising his hand (no doubt to petulantly slam it down on the table next to his tray) but Joshua grabbed his wrist, giving him a meaningful look. "Don't start anything that can be easily avoided," he muttered to the boy, and Vernon relented, albeit grudgingly.

"You're late," Lucy said conversationally, though your voice was higher than usual, probably because of the sudden tension that had descended upon the table. Vernon sat down slowly, still glaring at the boy, and she glanced at Joshua, who only shrugged. "These are, uhm, they're new."

"I figured," Vernon muttered.

"Three in one day? And this late into the year?" Joshua wondered aloud, raising his eyebrows. "Now I'm curious."

"Nothing worth your curiosity, I'm afraid," the new girl replied. Her eyes, when they swept over Vernon, were watchful and aware. "Just a coincidence. I was supposed to join earlier but there was a family emergency. As for these two, I can only guess." Her smile was small but sharp. "I'm Yeji."

"Felix," said the blond. He looked gloomy, but maybe it was just because of the unhealthy-looking pallor of his skin.

"And I'm Yangyang," the last boy said, with an impish grin that rubbed Vernon the wrong way. He already knew who these three were supposed to be—actually, everyone was supposed to know Felix, since Iceman was already a pretty famous member of the X-Men. Surely dyed hair couldn't be the only change needed to disguise that face? "Me and Felix are cousins, actually."

"Felix and I," Vernon mumbled under his breath, and Lucy gave him a look which he ignored. "Since when did you start taking people in for charity?"

She raised her eyebrows. "Be nice," she said. "They were in my Home Economics class, and if it hadn't been for Yeji here, I might have blown up the marble cake I was supposed to be making."

Joshua frowned. "How?"

"A story for another day." She smiled an unreadable smile, dark eyes sparkling. "Now—"

"No," Vernon said.

She glanced at him. "Excuse me?"

"No," he repeated. Then, as jerkily as he had sat down, he got up, and jabbed a finger at the new arrivals in turn, before pointing over his shoulder. "You three," he said venomously, "to the corridor. Now."

"Aw, man, I can't believe you're being so sensitive about this," Yangyang—Nova—complained loudly, though there was a shit-eating grin on his face as he followed Vernon into the hallway. "So Fury transferred us into your school without checking with you first. Big deal. What are you supposed to be, the queen of England?"

Vernon gave him a spiteful look, but otherwise ignored his remark. Instead, he focused on Yeji, who was watching him patiently, because she looked like the most sensible member of the group. He stared at her for a long moment, struggling to find the words that would convey the exact measure of his indignance. "Why?" he asked finally, giving up.

She shrugged helplessly. "Look, we didn't ask for this, either," she answered. "We're under orders, so it's not like we can just up and leave. Huddling in the hallway isn't a smart decision, either—we already have all eyes on us because of being the three new kids who randomly joined on the same day, and this is only making us look even more suspicious."

Vernon glared at her, trying to think of a good argument, then gave up. He turned on Felix, who was standing off to the side with folded arms, still looking uninterested in the conversation. "You," he said, narrowing his eyes, "you're Iceman."

Felix looked at him neutrally. "Yes."

"You're not under S.H.I.E.L.D.," Vernon said, pointing an accusatory finger. "And you have enough real-world experience, so there's no reason for you to be here instead of with the X-Men—"

"Dude," Felix said frostily; no pun intended. "Drop it."

Yeji nodded, giving Vernon a meaningful look he could not decipher.

"Aw, come on, web-head," Yangyang interjected. "We saved your life and you didn't even thank us, but I'll let that go since your manners aren't exactly polished. But this is just boring."

"It is not," Vernon seethed. "I'll talk to Fury—"

Yangyang snorted. "Good luck with that."

"—or the principal—"

"The new principal," Yeji muttered. "Agent Coulson."

Vernon made an exasperated noise. "The only reason I even agreed to Fury's stupid offer was because I thought it would get him off my case!" he yelled. "School is the only part of my life that's separate from all the wacky crap I have to deal with otherwise, and now even that—" He clenched his teeth. "If I'd known it meant having you people barge into my life like this—"

"Then you couldn't have done anything about it, even knowing," Yeji said, gently cutting him off. "Face it, hero. You're stuck with us as much as we're stuck with you—whether any of us like it or not."
