AWAKENINGS 1990
Read the newspaper. What does it say? All bad. It's all bad. People have forgotten what life is all about. They've forgotten what it is to be alive. They need to be reminded. They need to be reminded of what they have and what they can lose. What I feel is the joy of life, the gift of life, the freedom of life, the wonderment of life!

JOHN HICKS TRIO 'I'll GIVE YOU SOMETHING TO REMEMBER ME BY' (1988)
In the late 1980s, the renowned American jazz pianist, composer, and arranger John Hicks formed one of the most influential ensembles consisting out of musicians that had played music at the highest level all their lives and gained their status as both stand-alone artists and important sidemen. Each of them had participated in many of jazz’s great moments and all shared the ability, documented on many albums, to inspire their fellow musicians to even greater heights. The ‘John Hicks Trio’ had several line-up changes over the years that included greats such as Clifford Barbaro (Strata East, Blue Note, Sun Ra Arkestra, Charles Tolliver), Clint Houston (Prestige, Nina Simone, Roy Ayers, Azar Lawrence), Ray Drummond (Freddie Hubbard, Art Blakey, Lalo Schifrin), Marcus McLaurine (Muse, Verve, Weldon Irvine, Kool & The Gang) and Victor Lewis (Steve Grossman, Stan Getz, Charles Mingus, Cedar Walton, Chet Baker).
On the album we are presenting you today (I’ll Give You Something To Remember Me By from 1988) the trio consists out of some of the biggest and best players in the jazz, funk and soul scenes:
On piano we have the Atlanta based trio’s bandleader JOHN HICKS (1941-2006). He served as a leader on more than 30 albums and played as a sideman on more than 300 other recordings. After being taught piano by his mother, Hicks went on to study at Lincoln University of Missouri, Berklee College of Music, and the Julliard School. After playing with a number of different artists during the early ’60s (including Oliver Nelson and being part of Pharoah Sanders’s first band) he joined Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers in 1964. In the early ’70s he taught jazz history and improvisation at Southern Illinois University before resuming his career as a recording artist. Next to his many solo recordings for labels such as Strata East and Concord, Hicks would collaborate with all the big names in the scene, including Archie Shepp, Mingus and Alvin Queen. In 2014 & 2015, J Dilla paid homage to John Hicks by sampling two of his songs.
On drums we have the legendary IDRIS MUHAMMAD (1939-2014) who to this day is still considered as one of the most influential drummers covering a multitude of genre-transcending styles. Born in New Orleans, he showed early talent as a percussionist and began his professional career while still a teenager, playing on Fats Domino’s ‘Blueberry Hill’. He then toured with Sam Cooke and would later go on to work with Curtis Mayfield. Next to his landmark solo recordings for Prestige Records, Idris would collaborate with iconic musicians and acts from the likes of Manu Dibango, Ahmad Jamal, Melvin Sparks, Charles Earland, Walter Bishop, Ceasar Frazier, Roberta Flack, Gato Barbieri, Nathan Davis, Sonny Rollins, Lou Donaldson, Galt MacDermot, Lonnie Smith…and countless others. Idris Muhammad’s work was sampled by renowned performers such as Drake, Beastie Boys and Fatboy Slim.
On bass we have CURTIS LUNDY (born 1955) who originates from Florida. Lundy is a well-respected bass player (and a master of his instrument), choir director, arranger, composer and producer who was part of performances and recordings of renowned acts and artists such as Pharoah Sanders, Frank Morgan, Cole Porter, Chico Freeman, Khan Jamal… and many others!
On I’ll Give You Something To Remember Me By (recorded at the legendary Dutch Studio 44 in March 1987 and released on Limetree Records in 1988) the listener is treated to eight majestic tracks of the highest caliber (including an excellent Thelonious Monk cover-tune) and features a remarkable outing of advanced musicianship by three jazz-giants in their prime, delivering an inspirational gem of an album.
These recordings sound as successful, young and vibrant as ever! Expect supercharged ragtime Post Bop with striking notes, no-holds-barred musicianship, high swinging solos, screaming choruses and plenty of solid virtuosity to spare. The up tempo none stop Latin beat is complimented by the terrific drum solos of Idris Muhammad and the rhythmic bass stokes of Curtis Lundy. This electrifying set of tracks makes this release a bonafide hit and a must have for any self-respecting jazz fan or collector.

This reissue comes as a deluxe 180g vinyl edition (strictly limited to 500 copies worldwide) with obi strip…also present are the exclusive pictures shot by legendary Dutch photographer Frans Schellekens (known for his work with artists such as Chet Baker, Alice Coltrane, Freddie Hubbard and Sonny Rollins). AWAKENINGS (1990)
We do not know what we see when we look at Leonard. We think we see a human vegetable, a peculiar man who has been frozen in the same position for 30 years, who neither moves nor speaks. What goes on inside his mind? Is he thinking in there? Of course not, a neurologist says in Penny Marshall's new film "Awakenings." Why not? "Because the implications of that would be unthinkable." Ah, but the expert is wrong, and inside the immobile shell of his body, Leonard is still there. Still waiting.
Leonard is one of the patients in the "garden," a ward of a Bronx mental hospital that is so named by the staff because the patients are there simply to be fed and watered. It appears that nothing can be done for them. They were victims of the great "sleeping sickness" epidemic of the 1920s, and after a period of apparent recovery they regressed to their current states. It is 1969. They have many different symptoms, but essentially they all share the same problem: They cannot make their bodies do what their minds desire. Sometimes that blockage is manifested through bizarre physical behavior, sometimes through apparent paralysis.
One day a new doctor comes to work in the hospital. He has no experience in working with patients; indeed, his last project involved earthworms. Like those who have gone before him, he has no particular hope for these ghostly patients, who are there and yet not there. He talks without hope to one of the women, who looks blankly back at him, her head and body frozen. But then he turns away, and when he turns back she has changed her position — apparently trying to catch her eyeglasses as they fell. He tries an experiment. He holds her glasses in front of her, and then drops them. Her hand flashes out quickly and catches them.
Yet this woman cannot move through her own will. He tries another experiment, throwing a ball at one of the patients. She catches it. "She is borrowing the will of the ball," the doctor speculates. His colleagues will not listen to this theory, which sounds suspiciously metaphysical, but he thinks he's onto something. What if these patients are not actually "frozen" at all, but victims of a stage of Parkinson's Disease so advanced that their motor impulses are cancelling each other out—what if they cannot move because all of their muscles are trying to move at the same time, and they are powerless to choose one impulse over the other? Then the falling glasses or the tossed ball might be breaking the deadlock!
This is the great discovery in the opening scenes of "Awakenings," preparing the way for sequences of enormous joy and heartbreak, as the patients are "awakened" to a personal freedom they had lost all hope of ever again experiencing — only to find that their liberation comes with its own cruel set of conditions. The film, directed with intelligence and heart by Penny Marshall, is based on a famous 1972 book by Oliver Sacks, the British-born New York neurologist whose (ital) The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat (unital) is a classic of medical literature. These were his patients, and the doctor in the film, named Malcolm Sayer and played by Robin Williams, is based on him.
What he discovered in the summer of 1969 was that L-DOPA, a new drug for the treatment of Parkinson's Disease, might in massive doses break the deadlock that had frozen his patients into a space-time lock for endless years. The film follows some 15 of those patients, particularly Leonard, who is played by Robert De Niro in a virtuoso performance. Because this movie is not a tearjerker but an intelligent examination of a bizarre human condition, it's up to De Niro to make Leonard not an object of sympathy, but a person who helps us wonder about our own tenuous grasp on the world around us.
The patients depicted in this film have suffered a fate more horrible than the one in Poe's famous story about premature burial. If we were locked in a coffin while still alive, at least we would soon suffocate. But to be locked inside a body that cannot move or speak — to look out mutely as even our loved ones talk about us as if we were an uncomprehending piece of furniture! It is this fate that is lifted, that summer of 1969, when the doctor gives the experimental new drug to his patients, and in a miraculous rebirth their bodies thaw and they begin to move and talk once again, some of them after 30 years of self-captivity.
The movie follows Leonard through the stages of his rebirth. He was (as we saw in a prologue) a bright, likeable kid, until the disease took its toll. He has been on hold for three decades. Now, in his late 1940s, he is filled with wonder and gratitude to be able to move around freely and express himself. He cooperates with the doctors studying his case. And he finds himself attracted to a the daughter (Penelope Ann Miller) of another patient. Love and lust stir within him for the first time.
Dr. Sayer, played by Williams, is at the center of almost every scene, and his personality becomes one of the touchstones of the movie. He is shut off, too: by shyness and inexperience, and even the way he holds his arms, close to his sides, shows a man wary of contact. He really was happier working with those earthworms. This is one of Robin Williams' best performances, pure and uncluttered, without the ebullient distractions he sometimes adds — the schtick where none is called for. He is a lovable man here, who experiences the extraordinary professional joy of seeing chronic, hopeless patients once again sing and dance and greet their loved ones.
But it is not as simple as that, not after the first weeks. The disease is not an open-and-shut case. And as the movie unfolds, we are invited to meditate on the strangeness and wonder of the human personality. Who are we, anyway? How much of the self we treasure so much is simply a matter of good luck, of being spared in a minefield of neurological chance? If one has no hope, which is better: To remain hopeless, or to be given hope and then lose it again? Oliver Sacks' original book, which has been reissued, is as much a work of philosophy as of medicine. After seeing "Awakenings," I read it, to know more about what happened in that Bronx hospital. What both the movie and the book convey is the immense courage of the patients and the profound experience of their doctors, as in a small way they reexperienced what it means to be born, to open your eyes and discover to your astonishment that "you" are alive.

The Broad-Billed Moa is known from all over the New Zealand islands, especially lowland dunes, forests, shrublands, and grasslands
Tumblr media
Physical Description: The Broad-Billed Moa was a large, bulky dinosaur, covered in very shaggy feathers all over its body. It had a long neck, ending in a small head, with a wide bill - hence the name! It also had very sturdy, thick feet. These birds - like all Moa - entirely lost their wings, giving them a fairly boxy appearance. Their shaggy feathers would have been somewhat monochromatic, as well. These birds would grow up to one meter long, and females of this species were probably larger than the males.
Diet: The Broad-Billed Moa was an herbivore, grazing on a wide variety of plant material (including grass).
Tumblr media
By Michael B. H., CC BY-SA 3.0
Behavior: These birds would have been somewhat slower animals, spending most of their time lumbering about the coasts and plains of New Zealand, and eating most of the plant material they could find. They probably would eat as much food as they could, using their broad bills to grab more food and to not selectively browse on specific plants. They also probably herded together, forming loose groups as they roamed across the fields for food. These birds probably took care of their young, though how and to what extent is uncertain as it varies quite a bit amongst other ratites.
Ecosystem: New Zealand in the Pleistocene and Holocene was an extremely unique ecosystem, one of the few places in the world largely free of mammals during the Cenozoic. This meant that birds tended to fill the niches of mammals, doing things that ancient non-avian dinosaurs used to do. In addition, the lack of mammalian predators allowed for extensive diversification of birds even within their usual niches - the weird New Zealand Wrens, for example, are some of the most unique types of perching birds.
Tumblr media
By Scott Reid
This environment consisted of many other Moas, such as Pachyornis, Anomalopteryx, and Dinornis just to name a few; the aforementioned Kiwi bird; and other large weird birds like the Kākāpō and Kea and Kākā, other parrots, other passerines, cuckoos, swifts, water birds, owls, and more. During the days of the Moa, there was also the Haast’s Eagle, a large predator of Moa that would have been a huge thorn in the side of the Broad-Billed Moa. Also, there were Adzebills, weird relatives of living cranes that also filled the large land bird niche but with pointier beaks. In short, this was a modern-day Jurassic park, prior to being screwed up by human colonization and hunting, which drove many of these unique animals to extinction in the early modern period of history.
Other: For a long time, Moa like Euryapteryx were thought to be closely related to the other weird ratite of New Zealand, the Kiwi. However, later research revealed they were more closely related to the Tinamous of South America. What this shows is that, at some point, relatives of the Tinamous flew over to New Zealand, and colonized the island before becoming large, flightless weirdos.

Resurrecting Perkins Field
A century of gridiron history came crashing down last July when the grandstands at Bill Jobko Stadium in Brookside was demolished by a demo crew from Edgeco, Inc. It was a moment that culminated from years of maintenance neglect and repeated damage from flood waters. Grass can be sodded anew. The playing surface can be lined off ad nauseum when need arises. But the prospects of continually ensuring the safety of a grandstand built in 1919 become too much and it its demise was deemed necessary. Two seasons have gone by since football was last played on Perkins’ field’s storied surface. The Bridgeport Bulldogs have played road warriors since, calling both Red Devil Stadium in St. Clairsville and Purple Rider Stadium in Martins Ferry home in 2018. All “home” games were held at Ferry last season. Provided the recent positive signs in pandemic pushback continue, the 2020 season will see home games played upriver in the turf at Martins Ferry. Bridgeport athletics director Greg Harkness, his department, and the greater school community at large are all thankful for the helping hand both districts offered. They wish it wasn’t necessary, but Harkness is hoping this is the final season it’s required. “We absolutely appreciate the help we’ve gotten four our neighbors, especially Martins Ferry,” Harkness said. “They’ve given us the green light to use the field again this fall. We are optimistic that things are going to go the way we want and that this will be the last season we need to use their facility.”
Weighing the Options
The Bridgeport Exempted Village and its athletics department performed its due diligence in searching for the best option to bring the stadium back to life. That exploration resulted in multiple possibilities, both at its current location in Brookside as well as others. One of the said others was at property adjacent to the current school campus, most of which is owned—and operated—by former Bridgeport mayor John Callarik. His portion of the property, Chapter Square, contains more than 100 storage units along with a laundromat and car wash, providing both jobs and needed facilities to area residents. Callarik put up a passionate fight against the planned move. He wasn’t alone either as smaller protests broke out against the plan. The board relented said push and sent letters to property owners in early March that they opted to go in another direction. Eminent domain was off the table. One potential crisis averted. But it left the problem of what to do.
Tumblr media
All Eyes on Perkins
While Perkins Field has not seen a live football game in a few years, baseball has no such problem. The Bulldogs have utilized their home field as Perkins is a shared-space facility and portions of the outfield double as the football field come fall. Building the stadium back up then is priority. Harkness noted the district is awaiting word from flood study to iron out the details of the best path to pursue rebuild. One thing is for certain, increasing the elevation, similar to the Riesbeck’s Food Markets facility just down the road, is not an option. “The flood study is almost complete, which is the first phase of the process,” Harkness said. “But raising the field is not an option because of the issues it would cause for other low-lying areas along the creek. The problem was never the field, it’s the secondary buildings, and there are quite a few needed to host a football game. But right now, we are basically all in on refurbishing Perkins Field.” Harkness noted that plan, while still in the early stages, includes a set for new home-side bleachers. Portable bleaches will be used for the visitors’ side, as was done before. Permanent seating for the visitors’ section is not an option as that area contains the outfield for the baseball diamond. For those wondering or sitting in the dark, fingers crossed, no, turf is not an option. Neither is an all-weather track to ring the field. Both because of the dual baseball/football facility setup, and there just isn’t room. The major sticking points are going to be the fieldhouse, concession stand and restrooms. “Those are going to be the challenge, but we are thinking outside of the box to come up with a plan for those necessary buildings,” Harkness said. “We have some pretty good ideas, but we are still working through those.” It was previously reported that a mobile trailer or even bringing in food trucks are options for concessions. But, given concessions are a lifeblood of the athletic department’s budget at football games, they need to ensure that money stays in-house. “A mobile concession stand is the most likely avenue. We need to keep the revenue generated for the Band Boosters and (the mobile stand) can also be used for baseball games,” Harkness said.
Tumblr media
Athletics Director Greg Harkness noted the main sticking point will be the secondary buildings, liek the fieldhouse, concession stand, and restrooms. Pictured is the old fieldhouse along wiht a portion of the baseball field's outfield and fence. While football hasn't been played at Perkins since 2017, the baseball field is still used each spring.
Soon Time to Make More Memories
Perkins Field is not just home to Bridgeport High School sports. Junior high athletics, youth league tackle and flag football, and even the school’s annual graduation have called it home in the past. The facility hosted its first and lone playoff game in 2010, when an undefeated Bulldogs team consisting of Garrett Price and the Brothers Smelley (Chris, Curt and Cole), along with Mike Dalto took care of Southern Local before falling to Shadyside two weeks later in the regional final. Earlier that season, the stands at Perkins were packed as the Bulldogs knocked off Shadyside 21-14 in the regular season. That was one of the two most memorable gridiron moments at Perkins, along with the epic 1996 week-nine meeting of the unbeatens between the Eddie Drummond-led Linsly Cadets and the Bulldogs, led by backfield duo Bryan Widmor and Brian Bodor. Bridgeport being granted the chance to hold its home games at neighboring stadiums is the karma train coming full circle. For years, Perkins Field served as home field “B” for the St. John Central Fighting Irish when hometown Nelson Field was unavailable. In true Bridgeport hospitality, more recently, the ‘Dogs returned the favor allowing Martins Ferry to utilize Perkins Field last spring for baseball season while its own facilities were being worked on. Just sit tight fans of the Blue and Black. Football will return to Bill Jobko stadium soon enough. “I’d like to thank Kim Appolloni and Mark Cook, Jim Fogle and the Martins Ferry School Board (Brian McFarland, Nick Stankovich, Scott Ballint, Dorothy Powell and Billy Suto) for their help,” Harkness concluded. “That’s what is great about the valley. The communities step up and help each other. Their baseball facility wasn’t ready last spring, so they were able to play a handful of baseball games at our place, so we were able to return the favor a little.” Read the full article

(Graciliano Ramos, Memórias do Cárcere) Desviava-me dessas chateações próximas, refugiava-me noutras distantes. Essas ideias, repetidas, vexavam-me; tanto me embrenhara nelas que me sentia inteiramente perdido.
(Carlos Drummond de Andrade, Lira Itabirana) O Rio? É doce. A Vale? Amarga. Ai, antes fosse Mais leve a carga. Entre estatais E multinacionais, Quantos ais! A dívida eterna (…) Quantas toneladas exportamos De ferro? Quantas lágrimas disfarçamos Sem berro?
(Max Horkheimer e Theodor Adorno, Dialética do Esclarecimento) Não é fácil falar (…)
No terceiro dia, vieram e levaram meu vizinho católico. Como não sou católico, não me incomodei. No quarto dia, vieram e me levaram.
A morte de qualquer homem me diminui, porque sou parte do gênero humano.

JOHN HICKS TRIO 'IS THAT SO?'
The ‘John Hicks Trio’ had several line-up changes over the years that included greats such as Clifford Barbaro (Strata East, Blue Note, Sun Ra Arkestra, Charles Tolliver), Clint Houston (Prestige, Nina Simone, Roy Ayers, Azar Lawrence), Curtis Lundy (Pharoah Sanders, Frank Morgan, Cole Porter), Marcus McLaurine (Muse, Verve, Weldon Irvine, Kool & The Gang) and Victor Lewis (Steve Grossman, Stan Getz, Charles Mingus, Cedar Walton, Chet Baker).
On the album we are presenting you today (Is That So? from 1991) the trio consists out of some of the biggest and best players in the jazz, funk and soul scenes:
Next to his many solo recordings for labels such as Strata East and Concord, Hicks would collaborate with all the big names in the scene, including Archie Shepp, Alvin Queen, Mingus and Curtis Lundy. In 2014 & 2015, J Dilla payed homage to John Hicks by sampling two of his songs.
Next to his landmark solo recordings for Prestige Records, Idris would collaborate with iconic musicians and acts from the likes of Pharoah Sanders, Manu Dibango, Ahmad Jamal, Melvin Sparks, Charles Earland, Walter Bishop, Ceasar Frazier, Roberta Flack, Gato Barbieri, Nathan Davis, Sonny Rollins, Lou Donaldson, Galt MacDermot, Lonnie Smith…and countless others. Idris Muhammad’s work was sampled by renowned performers such as Drake, Beastie Boys and Fatboy Slim.
On bass we have RAY DRUMMOND (born 1946) who originated from Massachusetts. Drummond was a well-respected bass player (and a master of his instrument), composer, arranger, bandleader, educator and producer who was part of performances and recordings of renowned acts and artists such as Pharoah Sanders, Horace Tapscott, Art Farmer, George Coleman, Leon Thomas, Johnny Lytle, Freddie Hubbard, John Hicks, Houston Person, Toots Thielemans, Lalo Schifrin, Art Blakey…and many others!
The ‘Is That So?’ album was recorded at the legendary Studio 44 (Holland) in July 1990 and released on the Dutch label TIMELESS in 1991. On this amazing piece of work you’ll find ten majestic tracks (including an excellent Sonny Rollins cover-tune). The album was produced by John Hicks and Timeless Records owner Wim Wigt and is a remarkable outing of advanced musicianship by three jazz-giants in their prime, delivering an inspirational gem of an album. Is That So? sounds as successful, young and vibrant as ever! Expect supercharged Post Bop with striking notes, no-holds-barred musicianship, high swinging solos, screaming choruses and plenty of solid virtuosity to spare. The up tempo none stop Latin beat is complimented by the terrific drum solos of Idris Muhammad and the rhythmic bass stokes of Ray Drummond. This electrifying set of tracks makes this release a bonafide hit and a must have for any self-respecting jazz fan or collector.
Tidal Waves Music now proudly presents the FIRST ever vinyl release (these recordings were never issued on vinyl before) of John Hicks Trio “Is That So?”. This unique album comes as a deluxe 180g DOUBLE vinyl edition (strictly limited to 1000 copies worldwide) with obi strip. The jacket features exclusive pictures shot by legendary Dutch photographer Joost Leijen (known for his work with artists such as Chet Baker and Pharoah Sanders), also included is an insert with liner notes by renowned author and producer Russ Musto. This is also the FIRST time Is that So? is being released in North America and in the UK. Released exclusively for Record Store Day Black Friday 2021 and available in participating stores on November 26, 2021.

Hi, I have a comprehensive list of 500 different venture capitalist firms and angels who have invested in seed level investments. The first 71 have pictures and links, the other 429 just are names and I have some email contacts and names. This could be helpful for anyone who looking for a seed investment or early-stage investment. Here is the link: https://quanjack.com/500-venture-capitals-and-angels/You dont have to sign-up for my site, the password is Q.I copied and pasted from the link, I forgot that people on here hate clicking links. Sorry that it is all over the place, its being copied from my website. It is much tidier on the website, I want to fix it on here but I just dont have the time. If its upvoted enough I will format it properly. I hope this helps.  500 Startups3.       SV Angel4.       Andressen Horowitz5.       Foundry Group6.       Lerer Hippeau Ventures7.       Box Group8.       New Enterprise Associates9.       Data
