I revisited the reading with Diane from John Edwards and this part reminded me of that book claim that she was brought on against her will : " I feel like she could have been taking a nap, she could have had her headphones on, she could have been reading a book, whatever. There’s all this hustle and bustle happening. She’s getting whooshed off, like I feel like i’m being whooshed, like I have to go to [my] next place." What do you think about that claim anyway? Sorry if previously discussed.

The reading that Diane got, I remember this when it happened years ago and fans were all over the message boards talking about it. It was sad.

We can only go off what is presented to us. I’m glad it came out, because being a teenager when she died and hearing all these claims that she was “being a diva” and “demanded her things go on that plane”, I knew in my heart it wasn’t true.

It was absurd to believe that anyone would understand the dangerous life-threatening magnitude and still demanded to fly; not only as a passenger but as a pilot as well. No rational person would do that (the pilot unfortunately was not in his right mind because of drugs); therefore, I don’t believe the airline company is being honest with what took place that night. Let’s not forget the FAA inspector took his life a month afterwards.

Anyhoo – I’m glad things came out that Aaliyah DID NOT want to board that plane and that she was not a part of this supposed “argument” between the airline and the entourage.

Special Counsel Jack Smith reportedly stared down former President Donald Trump throughout the entirety of Mr. Trump’s arraignment in Miami on Tuesday.

Hugo Lowell of The Guardian and other journalists reported that Mr. Smith sat in the front row during Mr. Trump’s arraignment on federal charges related to his handling of classified documents after leaving the White House in 2021 and “stared towards the former president for essentially the entire appearance.”

Mr. Smith was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland to oversee the Department of Justice’s investigation into Mr. Trump’s handling of classified documents and his attempts to overturn the result of the 2020 presidential election.

Already, he has led an historic investigation: Mr. Trump last week became the first former president ever indicted on federal charges just months after he became the first former president ever to be indicted at all when he was charged in New York over his alleged role in the payment of hush money to adult film star Stormy Daniels.

Mr. Trump is facing 37 felony counts in connection to his handling of the documents and his alleged efforts to impede the government’s efforts to reacquire them. He has pleaded not guilty.

“Adherence to the rule of law is a bedrock principle of the Department of Justice and our nation’s commitment to the rule of law sets an example for the world,” Mr. Smith told reporters at a press conference last Friday. “We have one set of laws in this country and they apply to everyone.”

Mr. Trump has not taken kindly to Mr. Smith’s efforts. Shortly before his arraignment, he took to Truth Social to call the special counsel a “thug.”

“This is the Thug, over turned consistently and unanimously in big cases, that Biden and his CORRUPT Injustice Department stuck on me,” the former president wrote. “He’s a Radical Right Lunatic and Trump Hater, as are all his friends and family, who probably “planted” information in the “boxes” given to them. They taint everything that they touch, including our Country, which is rapidly going to HELL!”

Mr. Smith has already had a decorated career at the Justice Department. He led the department’s public integrity unit from 2010 to 2015, taking part in investigations into former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina and former Gov. Bob McDonnell of Virginia.

He then moved to become the assistant US attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee and briefly served as acting US attorney before moving into private law with the Hospital Corporation of America before becoming chief prosecutor for the special court in The Hague.

In the courtroom in Miami, Mr. Smith reportedly cut an intimidating figure.

Mr. Trump and Mr. Smith will likely lock horns again in the coming months as this case and the Justice Department’s investigation into the efforts to overturn the result of the 2020 election unfold. In the meantime, Mr. Trump remains the frontrunner for the Republican nomination for president — a fact that could complicate the ongoing prosecutions of him.

The British band Modern Nature are no strangers to improvisation, but they are best known for doing so in a polystylistic blend of folk, indie rock and jazz. The group had a residency at Cafe OTO in May 2022. On the second night, they decided to augment their forces for a free improv set. Jack Cooper plays electric guitar; Jeff Tobias, alto and soprano saxophones and there are two bassists: John Edwards and Samuel Hollis. It is a great hybrid ensemble, unconventional in its grouping, which allows for exploration to be almost inevitable. If one didn’t know the musicians' regular outfit, it would be hard to guess.

It certainly helps the cohesion of the set that they know one another and their playing methods well. However, there is still a sense of spontaneity and a feeling that the group is listening attentively to one another, responding in kind. 

Tobias creates searing solos on soprano saxophone. When he shifts to tenor, he plays smoky mid-range modal melodies. Cooper cedes aggressive playing to Tobias, instead focusing on texture. The guitarist creates a number of ostinatos, at one point taking over the proceedings with a simple two-string pattern. Both musicians distress bent notes into sustained clusters of microtones. When he and Tobias join forces, the guitarist plays string bends that blend with the saxophone lines. The bassists take on complementary roles, frequently making up for the absence of a drummer with one thrumming on strings, while the other takes on an assertive  melodic role. Both Cooper and Tobias are challenged by bass solos two octaves below their playing. There are some truly enveloping arco passages that employ incandescent harmonics and intricate multiphonics. When they both create crescendos of percussive attacks, the results are powerful cascades of sound. This is sometimes supplemented by Cooper creating his own percussive swarm of sounds and by Tobias taking motifs from the basses to craft his own solos, and vice versa.   

The set clocks in at 27 minutes. Although well-developed, I could easily imagine it lasting longer. Modern Nature should keep exploring free improv opportunities: Ephemera is an excellent taste of what they might achieve.
