Hey, since cloning technology is good enough for them to create mammoth meatballs but not the entire mammoth yet, which prehistoric animal do you feel like taking a bite of?
Given where I was born, and where @dduane and I currently live, I think some Giant Irish Elk venison would be about right.
Tumblr media
Enough for the entire clan with plenty of leftovers and a Handy Thing To Hang Stuff From.
*****
Which leads via Memory Lane to a funny by John M. Ford, who used to post such things - along with witticisms, wise observations and poetry - on Making Light.
He produced these in the same way a bonfire produces sparks: random, unexpected, brilliant and without apparent effort - though like the graceful swan on the river, I bet there was a lot of work going on out of sight. Or maybe not. Mike was that good.
For instance, he wrote THIS just to comment on another post...
I saved everything I could find offline because You Can Never Tell about online stuff, and also because there was, for a time, doubt - happily, It Got Better - that ANY of his writing would ever be seen again.
(Dammit, just like Terry Pratchett I HATE having to refer to Mike in past tense...)
And now, the funny (original archived Here). I've been assured that This Recipe Will Work, though the assurance also came with a strong suggestion about reducing the ingredient quantities More Than Somewhat.
*****
Hot Gingered Pygmy Mammoth & Jumbo Shrimp Salad
Feeds your whole tribe.
1 pygmy mammoth, boned and cubed (about 1 ton) 1 ton jumbo shrimp, peeled and deveined (many many ordinary shrimps, or one Ebirah claw) 10 buckets sesame seeds 60 pounds bean thread noodles if you are an Eastern tribe, whatever your tribe uses for noodles otherwise. If you have not yet invented the noodle, this might be a good time to do so. 1 bucket vegetable oil 1 bucket sesame oil Salt 10 buckets minced fresh ginger 6 buckets minced garlic 15 buckets dry Sherry 15 buckets rice wine vinegar 60 pounds sugar 60 buckets diced fresh mangoes 15 buckets chopped green onions Big Snorgul's helmet full of red pepper flakes 10 buckets chopped fresh cilantro, plus 5 Big Snorgul's helmets fresh cilantro, garnish 1000 large heads lettuce, cored and leaves separated (a raid on the People Who Grow Stuff may be necessary) 30 buckets thinly sliced, peeled, seeded, drained cucumbers, or just chop up the damn cucumbers and say "Fie to thee!" a lot All the chives you got
Preheat a giant turtle shell over a fumarole. A big giant turtle. Put some oil in there. Make sure no other giant turtles are around to see you do this.
On a flat rock, stirring with your Stick of the Dining God, dry cook the sesame seeds over medium heat until they are brown and smell good. Remove from the heat. Add the noodles to the turtle shell and fry fast until puffy and the color of sunrise. Remove from the oil and drain on non-itchy leaves. Throw salt. Set aside.
Sear the mammoth meat on the flat rock. Salt but don't overdo it, you remember what happened to the Chest-Clutching Tribe of the Plains. Drain.
Get a less giant turtle shell. Okay, think of this as a celebration dish for a good turtle hunt and shrimp catch. Make the vegetable oil and most of the sesame oil dance. Add the shrimp, mammoth, ginger, and garlic, and cook fast, stirring, until the shrimp are just pink and firm. Doom of Ten Thousand Wretched Canapés awaits those who overcook shrimp. Remove from the shell with pole weapons. Add the sherry and vinegar, and sing the Song of Deglazing over medium heat. Add the sugar and stir until it is one with the sauce. Cook until half the fluid is gone. Feed anybody who thinks this is waste to the giant turtles. Add the rest of the sesame oil, mangoes, green onions, and pepper flakes, and stir to warm through and wilt. No, this wilt is good. Tell the people it is the wilt of the Wilt God. You need all the mojo you can get. Remove from the heat and add the shrimp and ginger, and the cilantro. Stir to warm through and do the Highly Dramatic Ritual of Adjusting the Seasoning to Taste.
Now your tribal status is on the thin edge of the cleaver. Have everybody bring what they eat off of. You know your tribe. Put lettuce on whatever they hold out and spread the hot stuff on it. Those who have no eating platters should be used to the drill by now. Arrange cucumber slices on top in whatever symbolic pattern seems propitious to you and sprinkle with the toasted sesame seeds. If you have a really tough tribe, yell "Bam!" until they get a groove going. Add fried noodles, cilantro sprigs, and chives, and watch for any signs of people keeling over that can't be blamed on strong drink.

@deckdancer and I were conversing this evening, and he had this question about mass farming practices. My response ended up being a little lengthier than I anticipated, but I was also trying to be concise (which is hard for John the Verbose, lol)
I've been having a lot of thoughts about plants and mass farming practices tonight, and while I know horticulture isn't exactly your specialty, I wanted to hear your thoughts on the disconnect between the symbiosis of nature vs the mass farming practices we use today, and their effects on us today as a society?
One thing I've noticed over the last 10 years is how stressed the corn fields look when we've had year after year of drought conditions. The leaves curl along the edges and look like dessicated spears. Corn is a huge water hog, and an inefficient hog at that. Most of the water is ultimately lost to evapotranspiration meaning the water table doesn't even recharge at all from irrigation.
So much of that corn goes to ethanol plants and livestock feed, so it still has a high demand, but many of the crops just die or are stunted before they can be used. Before irrigation technology was widespread, places like Minnesota grew more wheat. Minneapolis was (and still is) where so many big flour mills are, but now the wheat grain comes in from the high plains. Wheat is what we should be growing for our climate already, but corn became popular because of irrigation. Wheat uses much less water, and some cultivars can be harvested twice a year.
Factory farming of corn has changed noticeably in my own lifetime. I remember the rows used to be a bit farther apart. You could run between the rows and pretend to be the "children of the corn." My dad said he could remember when he was younger there were much wider gaps in the rows of cornfields. We've bred them for higher yield and to be planted closer together that both of those factors mean they need much more water than they used to. Some farmers plant rows so close together you almost can't walk between them now.
A lack of diversification is also a problem as well. The past three years have been really bad for corn, but for many farmers, it's their cash crop. Soy beans have become a novelty... alfalfa a rarity... and I'm shocked if I ever see any wheat at all. Monoculture crops (even beyond grains) are begging for any one-off minor catastrophe to jeopardize the whole crop. If a plant disease or infestation pops up, it will spread much faster than if we had varied crops, and of course it would have a more detrimental effect if that one monoculture crop gets destroyed. Palm oil farming is another example of a fragile monoculture.
Diversification is easier said than done though. You can't use a single type of harvester machine for all crop types. The Cherokee would plant things together: Corn, pumpkins/squash, and vine beans. They understood for generations that those "Three Sisters" thrived better together than by themselves. The beanstalks would climb the corn, the beans would put nitrogen and nutrients back in the soil, and the squash/pumpkins would reduce evaporation from the soil. The large gourd leaves would reduce the amount of sunlight on the ground, inhibiting weed growth. All that today would still require harvesting by hand, and unfortunately it is considered too unprofitable. It would be suitable for people with gardens, self-sufficient homesteads, or small-scale farms (and we gotta WANT to get into that, too).
The big problem is (I think) that first we would need a large-scale, multifaceted cultural shift. Ethanol as biofuel is not as sustainable as the industry wants us to believe. As much as I love beef, we gotta reduce our consumption of large livestock. Cattle need a lot of corn and a lot of water. Other farm animals are more efficient in terms of resources required per pound of meat. That's a statement that sounds great for reducing corn and water usage, but other monoculture crops have their own unique pros and cons.

Five Most Infamous Fictional Psychiatrists
Wall Street Journal
The Dice Man
By George Cockroft, writing as Luke Rhinehart (1971)
In this novel, a character named Luke Rhinehart is a middle-aged Manhattan psychiatrist suffering from depression. Disillusioned with medicine and with life, he finds freedom in the roll of the dice. One roll dictates that he carry out his deeply disturbing fantasy of raping the wife of his close colleague. When he knocks on her door and tells her what he plans to do, he’s taken aback by her compliance. He’s disturbed further when, after two agreeable hours, he realizes that he has changed in some indefinable but significant way. He extends the laws of chance to his clinical decision-making, which alleviates his deep-seated fear of failure and allows him to begin viewing his work as something of a game. He advises a female patient diagnosed with nymphomania to find work in a  busy Brooklyn brothel. To a slender young woman from Greenwich Village who likes talking about herself he says, "In summation, that as human beings go you are mediocre in all respects except in the quantity of your fortune."
The Silence of the Lambs
By Thomas Harris (1988)
Hannibal Lecter is a serial killer who—before his conviction for nine homicides and subsequent commitment to the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane—was a highly respected forensic psychiatrist. He has an unerring capacity to strip people of their mental defenses and an intelligence that defies metrics. A cultured man, he’s endowed with a glacial calm and an iron will. We’re told that Lecter’s thoughts are no more bound by fear or kindness than “Paradise Lost” author John Milton’s were by physics. Hannibal abhors bad manners and enjoys eating the flesh of the intolerably rude. He delights in describing to Clarice Starling—the FBI trainee sent to seek his assistance in solving a case of serial murders—how he savored a census taker’s liver, which he cooked with fava beans and washed down with a glass of Amarone wine.
Super-Cannes
By J.G. Ballard (2000)
Lured by tax concessions, a Mediterranean climate and a Euro-corporate lifestyle, dozens of multinational companies have moved their business into Eden-Olympia, a business park populated by a highly paid elite of senior managers, administrators and entrepreneurs. The flawed and dangerous antihero of this dystopia of technology is the staff psychiatrist Wilder Penrose, an “amiable Prospero” with evasive eyes and an eager smile, who steers his clients’ darkest dreams toward the daylight. Wilder’s vision is to create an intelligent modern city that promotes advanced health screening, up-to-the-minute gadgetry and the replacement of the civic with the commercial. But as the novel proceeds, it becomes clear that Wilder is more concerned with exciting the base instincts of those in charge. He explains to the book’s protagonist, Paul, that ever since he organized the drug and vice rings and a leather-jacketed “bowling club” whose sorties into the outside world leave Arab pimps and Senegalese trinket merchants bleeding in the gutters, the park’s chief executives no longer complain of stress and burnout and profits have soared.
The Alienist
By Machado de Assis (1882)
A young doctor decides to settle down and set up a medical practice near Rio de Janeiro. The corrupt local council, dazzled by Dr. Bacamarte’s impeccable credentials, welcomes him and gives him carte blanche to study mental illness free from oversight. As Bacamarte diagnoses more and more people as being mad, the town’s barber leads a revolt against him. Justifying his actions, Bacamarte explains: “Till now, madness has been thought a small island in an ocean of sanity. I am beginning to suspect that it is not an island at all but a continent.” After he has locked up more than 80% of the town’s population—including his own wife—Bacamarte suddenly suspects that it is the remaining, seemingly well-balanced minority who are crazy. Rectitude, patience, loyalty and modesty, he now believes, are the true signs of mental illness. And as the most rational individual in the region, he is now compelled to diagnose himself as mad, spending the final 17 months of his life in solitary confinement. The author of “The Alienist” was an epileptic with considerable experience of real doctors. This 80-page novella is steeped in humor, in addition to being a tale of professional power run amok.
Asylum
By Patrick McGrath (1997)
Peter Cleave, the medical superintendent of an English asylum for the criminally insane, is the narrator of this story. Set in 1959, the tale revolves around the fatal erotic obsession of Stella Raphael, the cultured and restless wife of one of Peter’s colleagues. The object of her passion is the talented sculptor Edgar Stark, who was committed to the asylum for murdering and disfiguring his wife. That doesn’t prevent a relationship with Stella from blossoming once Edgar escapes from the asylum. Stella meets up with him in London and establishes a bohemian life. The scandal forces Stella’s husband, Max, to leave his position as a forensic psychiatrist and work elsewhere, but that doesn’t put an end to the affair. Peter is a rather dry narrator, but there are hints of his deficiencies as a psychiatrist. Infatuated with her, ignoring his duty as her psychiatrist, he pursues her obsessively, to a not altogether surprising ending

Decoding the Long-Term Care Insurance Market: Where Numbers, Players, and Services Collide
Welcome, curious minds! Today, let’s embark on a rollercoaster journey through the fascinating universe of long-term care insurance. Buckle up because we’re about to unravel a market that’s growing faster than a meme on a Monday morning.
Tumblr media
The Grand Showdown of Figures:
Hold on to your hats because, according to the not-so-boring report with the catchy ID SQMIG40M2001, the global Long-Term Care Insurance Market was a staggering USD 18.88 billion in 2021. Fast forward to 2030, and we’re looking at a jaw-dropping USD 53.21 billion. That’s a growth rate of 12.3%, making your investment portfolio jealous.
The A-Listers in the Market:
Now, let’s talk about the big shots in this insurance gala. We’ve got the usual suspects — Genworth, John Hancock, Aviva, Allianz, and the rest. It’s like the Avengers of finance, minus the spandex.
Segmentation Shenanigans:
The report delves into segments like a treasure hunter in a jungle. We’ve got types — traditional and hybrid (not the car, unfortunately), applications — between 18 and 64 or over 65 (because age is more than just a number), payers — out-of-pocket and public (cue suspenseful music), and services — nursing care and home healthcare. It’s like crafting your own adventure — choose wisely.
Service Smackdown:
In 2022, nursing care took the spotlight, claiming a massive revenue share of 32.3%. Seems like the elderly have a thing for specialized care. Home healthcare is also making waves — because who wouldn’t want care delivered to their doorstep like a VIP package?
Paying the Piper:
Public funding flaunted its dominance, claiming a whopping 63.5% of the revenue share in 2022. Meanwhile, out-of-pocket expenses played their role but are predicted to take a back seat in the future. Maybe they need a better scriptwriter.
Global Adventures:
North America rocked the charts in 2022, securing the throne with a massive 49.3% share. Meanwhile, the Asia Pacific region is all about the family drama. In Thailand, a jaw-dropping 90% of elderly individuals receive care from family members. Talk about a full house.
For More Information: https://www.skyquestt.com/report/long-term-care-insurance-market
Driving Forces and Roadblocks:
The report spills the beans on increasing awareness surrounding facilities (because apparently, some folks didn’t realize they needed care) and the rising costs of insurance, which is putting a dent in everyone’s pocket. It’s like wanting a first-class ticket but realizing you can only afford economy.
Competitive Comedy:
The market is a dynamic circus with established brands, emerging players, and niche producers. It’s like a talent show, but instead of singing, they showcase innovations.
Wrap-Up Wisdom:
There you have it — the not-so-dry breakdown of the long-term care insurance market. Aging populations, rising awareness, and a dash of financial drama — it’s like a blockbuster movie, but with insurance policies.
So, the next time someone tries to impress you with their insurance jargon at a dinner party, throw in some knowledge bombs from this journey. Because who wouldn’t want to be the superhero of insurance discussions?
Until next time, stay insured and keep it classy!

1914 Freedom's Five (Limited series)
Victorex Prime or the Scarlet Centurion (a Kang variant) is bored of life in the 40th century, having conquered everything there is to conquer. He has now resorted to conquering various eras of the past to alleviate the boredom. He has been trying to conquer earth during the chaos of WWI, identified as a good point in earth's history. Suitably advanced, but no notable superheroes. He has future tech and future fighters and they are mistaken for ‘martians’ by the public.
The Time Variance Authority aren't pruning regularly yet as this is still the time war, though He Who Remains (not named in the show) has worked out the technology. They have to stop the Scarlet Centurion to finally bring about the sacred timeline. They've stopped him twice and he escaped both times. They know if he continues to mess with this timeline then time eaters (demons from outside of time) will eventually consume it anyway. We will see this take effect in Legion later on.
Revonna Renslayer, a time judge, wants to use the new technology to prune the timeline, Kang variant and all. Mobius wants to try something different to see if the timeline can be saved.
He tips off an obscure superhero team of the period and they take out a ‘martian’ tripod by themselves, proving to Renslayer that there is a possibility to save this timeline.
Our heroes have to fight alongside the TVA against the invasion whilst simultaneously staving off being pruned by the same group.
The team are called ‘Freedom's Five’ (cringe) and consist of:
The Crimson Cavalier - Jean-Luc Batroc, an antecedent of Batroc the Leaper from CA:TWS. Equally adept at savate, swordsmanship and proto-parkour athleticism (studied under Georges Hérbert at Reims University in France). He was a criminal in peace time but fights for the freedom of France. (Played by David Belle).
Iron Fist - The Orson Randall version. Orson abandoned his post as protector of  the heavenly city of K'un Lun (luckily they replaced him before the city was attacked). Born in K'un Lun to an American father, he is headstrong and brash but also brave and protective of his comrades. He channels the mystical power from his fists into dual-wield pistols, extending the range and accuracy of his power as well as being an expert martial artist. He replaced the Silver Squire in the Squad. (Played by Brandon Lee).
Phantom Eagle - Karl Kaufmann. American born German who fights for the allies. The aceiest of flying aces and skilled at hand to hand combat too. (Played by Dolph Lundgren)
Sir Steel - Ned Chapel, a Yorkshire blacksmith, worked on the Armatage Estate and was bequeathed the enchanted armour Sir Steel. He is a master swordsman and has near invulnerability from his enchanted armour. His sidekick the Silver Squire is currently injured and therefore absent from the team. (Played by Sean Bean)
Union Jack - A young Lord James Montgomery Falsworth. Studied at Reims with Jean-Luc. Equally adept at the proto-parkour style of athleticism. Dead shot with a pistol and skilled at hand to hand combat. Sometimes converses in French with Jean-Luc. (Played by JJ Feild. Though I'm tempted to replace him with an age appropriate Nigel Havers).
TVA characters:
Judge Revonna Renslayer
Agent Mobius M. Mobius
General Dox
Hunter B-15
Hunter C-20
Hunter X-5
Various hunters and agents, maybe some clerical workers back at the TVA.
Other characters:
Lady Falsworth, the fiancée of James who holds a secret (she is Inhuman).
John Falsworth, younger brother of Lord James. Irked at being second in line for the title.
Ursula Frankenstein, John's love interest, has an ulterior motive for being with John. She is close to making a breakthrough in reanimation and is willing to go to whoever will fund her, including Hydra and mysterious cults.
Scarlet Centurion's warriors
Also Military types of the era
In the end they succeed, with TVA having to wipe everyone's memories of future tech and time travel. The government, with limited information, pass it off as a massive German bombing raid.
The Freedom's Five know it wasn't that, but they don't know what it was.
Back at the TVA, Mobius is disappointed that they had to take their victory away from them. Renslayer reminds him that was the only thing that saved them from being pruned.
