Jesus Prays to Be Glorified
1 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 2 For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. 3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. 4 I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.

6 “I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. 7 Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. 8 For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. John 17, Reed's Version
After Jesus finished his talk with the apprentices, he looked up to heaven and said, “Father, the time has come. Honor Your Son so he can honor You, as You gave him authority over all mankind — authority to give everlasting life to everyone You’ve given him. And everlasting life consists of this: knowing You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You sent. I’ve honored You on earth by finishing all the work You gave me to do. Now Father, it’s Your turn to honor me in Your presence with the honor I used to have when I was at Your right hand before the world began. 
“I’ve revealed Your character to my followers whom You’ve drawn to me from the world. They belong to You, but You’ve entrusted them to me and they have obeyed Your instruction. And they now know that everything You’ve given me comes from You. I’ve passed on to them the words which You gave me, and they’ve embraced them. Now they truly understand that I came from Your right hand, and they believe that You sent me with Your authority. 
“So I’m praying to You on their behalf. I’m not praying for the whole world now, but just for those You have given me, who belong to You. All that I have is Yours, and all You have is mine, and I have been honored by it all. I will not remain in the world, since I am coming to You, but my followers must remain in the world. So, Holy Father, protect them by the power of Your divine identity (an identity I share with you). Make them of one mind, just as You and I are one. When I was with them I protected them by the power of Your divine identity (which I share with you) and I kept them safe. The only one that was lost is the one who was doomed to perish, foretold in scripture. But now that I’m on my way to You, I’m praying in front of them so they’ll be comforted with with my joy, joy to the full. I have entrusted Your message to them, and the world hates them since they don’t belong to this world just as I don’t belong to this world. 15 I’m not asking You to take them out of the world but to protect them from Satan’s immanent attack. They don’t belong to this world any more than I do. Equip them for their task by Your truth; every word from Your mouth is truth. Just like you sent me into this world, I am sending them back into it. On their behalf I am ritually consecrated for my upcoming task, which will in turn consecrate them for theirs, by Your truth. 
“And I’m not praying for them only, but also for everyone who will believe in me through their message. I pray that they will all be unified, just as You, Father, and I are unified. I pray that in us they will find unity, so that the world will believe that I truly represent You. I gave them the divine stamp of approval which You gave me, so that they’ll have unity just as You and I do. You’re in me and I in turn am in them so they may become complete, having unity; then the world will know that my mission was divine, and that You love them like You love me. 
“Father, all these dear friends whom You gave me, I want to be with me where I am and for them to experience my glory. You have given me this glory because You’ve loved me since before the world was made. Perfect Father, it’s true that so many in the world have refused to know You, but I know You and my followers know You, inasmuch as they recognize that I represent You. I’ve shown them Your true nature, as I will continue to do, so that Your love for me will also be in them, and so my love will be in them.”

13“But now I am coming to You; and these things I speak in the world so that they may have My joy made full in themselves.
14“I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
15“I am not asking You to take them out of the world, but to keep them away from fnthe evil one.
16“They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
17“Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.
18“Just as You sent Me into the world, I also sent them into the world.
19“And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, so that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth.

Disciples’ Future Glory

5.] How Do We Recieve GOD's Love?

Secondly how do we receive this incredible love?
How do we start to receive it so it actually changes our lives? Now at first, this passage doesn't seem to be giving us any help—so look at v.24
HE says FATHER I want those YOU have given ME to be with ME where I am & to see MY glory, the glory YOU have given ME because YOU love ME before the creation of the world.
Now we'll get back to this, but JESUS is saying when we die if you're a Christian, or at the end of time if you're a Christian. You actually go where JESUS is & you see the glory of the love we've talked about.
This before from all eternity, the FATHER, the SON the HOLY SPIRIT—have been perfectly loving ONE another & glorifying each other. And JESUS says at the end of time we are going to be incorporated into that love & glory.
It's astounding but you say well that doesn't help us now. Yeah it does! Yes it's true it's talking about an incredible experience—and we will only know that experience fully in the future.

5.1] But will we know it only in the future?

That's the question.
We will know it fully only in the future, but will we know it only in the future & no it's not true because like for example even 22
Look at v.22, it actually gives you a hint. JESUS says “I've already given them the glory YOU gave ME.”
What's that mean & what does Paul mean when he says in 2 Corinthians 3-4? This is what Paul writes, he says “we who contemplate the LORD's glory are being transformed into HIS image with ever increas -ing glory, for GOD WHO said let light shine out of the darkness made HIS light to shine in our hearts —to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of GOD, the face of JESUS CHRIST.”
So here it says that when we see HIM, & by the way 1 John 3:1, John says when we see HIM we'll be like HIM because we will see HIM as HE is.
So when we see JESUS CHRIST, we'll become like HIM—you know why? Because you'll want HIM!

5.2] Seeing is Believing

There was an article in the New York Times just this weekend somewhere where HE said advertisers have gotten pretty smart.
………………………………………………………………… They realize they don't want to just tell you about a product—they want to show you the product. There is something about the human nature that if we see something we want it. …………………………………………………………………
We tend to want what we see.
   •  It looks so delicious    •  that looks so comfortable
Whatever so when we see it, we tend to want it.
We're told in 1 John 3:1 when we see JESUS CHRIST we will become like HIM because we will see HIM as HE is—when we actually see the glory & beauty of JESUS CHRIST, we will want that same glory and beauty.
We will want HIM so much that it'll utterly transform us on the spot—we'll become perfect we'll become glorious! Everything wrong with us will go.

Wait but Paul says & this is what's important that you don't have to wait completely for that experience that there's a way he says:
      we who are contemplating the LORD's glory
Well what does that mean?!
It means you can see HIS glory through faith!!! You can see HIS glory through the eyes of faith with the power of the SPIRIT there's a sense in which you can see HIM.
No not like it's going to be at the end.
It's not the vision of CHRIST at the end of time.
But to some degree you see HIM now & that changes you now & that's what Paul is saying!
What does that mean?!

      if those of you who know Oxford, he was a       great thinker & writer, and as he was dying       in the 1680s he wrote his last book called
      Meditations & discourses on the glory of       CHRIST & that's a wonderful book & in it       he said over all of his lifetime he'd come       to realize you never changed just by       elbow grease.

He says whenever you do something because you have to, it's always a superficial change. It never lasts, but he says what really changes me..
He says what makes me forgiving is not that the Bible says you must forgive, it's by seeing JESUS CHRIST — the beauty of JESUS CHRIST dying on the cross to forgive me.
And when I say,
      “Oh LORD did YOU really do that for me?       YOU forgave me that changes me because       [I don't just] I'm not becoming forgiving       because I have to.
      I'm becoming forgiving to because I want       to & it's not just the sight of JESUS doing       it. You know as an example but as SAVIOR       doing it for me.

24 Πάτερ, ὃ δέδωκάς μοι, θέλω ἵνα ὅπου εἰμὶ ἐγὼ κἀκεῖνοι ὦσιν μετʼ ἐμοῦ, ἵνα θεωρῶσιν τὴν δόξαν τὴν ἐμήν, ἣν δέδωκάς μοι ὅτι ἠγάπησάς με πρὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου. 25 πάτερ δίκαιε, καὶ ὁ κόσμος σε οὐκ ἔγνω, ἐγὼ δέ σε ἔγνων, καὶ οὗτοι ἔγνωσαν ὅτι σύ με ἀπέστειλας· 26 καὶ ἐγνώρισα αὐτοῖς τὸ ὄνομά σου καὶ γνωρίσω, ἵνα ἡ ἀγάπη ἣν ἠγάπησάς με ἐν αὐτοῖς ᾖ κἀγὼ ἐν αὐτοῖς. 
My translation: 
24 “Father, that which you have given to me, I want that where I am those ones also might be with me, in order that they might perceive my glory, which you have given to me for you loved me before the foundation of the world. 25 Righteous Father, even the world knew you not, but I knew you, and these ones knew that you sent me; 26 And I made known to them your name and I will make it known, in order that the love with which you loved me might be in them and I in them.”

πάτερ is vocative. 
The relative pronoun ὃ is its own antecedent (“that which”). Referring to people (see κἀκεῖνοι below), the neuter is used to emphasize the unity of a collective whole (cf. v. 2); some manuscripts alter ὃ to οὓς. ὃ is the direct object of the perfect δέδωκάς (from δίδωμι) and μοι is the indirect object. The clause is a pendant nominative, fronted for emphasis, resumed by κἀκεῖνοι below.
After θέλω, ἵνα (“that”) introduces the content of the desire, equivalent to an infinitive. The subject of the present subjunctive ὦσιν (from εἰμί; subj. after ἵνα) is κἀκεῖνοι, a crasis of καὶ + ἐκεῖνοι. The verb is modified by the associative prepositional phrase μετʼ ἐμοῦ. The clause introduced by the spatial particle ὅπου modifies ὦσιν. The emphatic subject of the present εἰμὶ is ἐγὼ (“that where I am they also may be”).
ἵνα + subjunctive indicates purpose with ὦσιν above. The direct object of the present subjunctive θεωρῶσιν (from θεωρέω) is τὴν δόξαν, modified by attributive possessive adjective τὴν ἐμήν. The relative clause introduced by ἣν defines τὴν δόξαν; ἣν is the direct object of the perfect δέδωκάς (from δίδωμι) and μοι is the indirect object. 
ὅτι is causal with δίδωμι above. The direct object of the aorist ἠγάπησάς (from ἀγαπάω) is με. 
ἡ καταβολή (11x) is, “foundation” (BDAG), literally, “something laid down” from καταβάλλω (2x) “I lay/cast down” (itself from κατά + βάλλω); NIV, NET: “creation”. The temporal prepositional phrase πρὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου modifies ἀγαπάω above. κόσμου is an objective genitive.

The noun πάτερ and attributive adjective δίκαιε are vocative. 
The καὶ ... δέ construction is adversative; NASB: “although the world has not known You, yet I have known You”; NET: “even if the world does not know you, I know you”; HCSB: “The world has not known You. However, I have known You”. ZG admits, ‘The force of the first καί is not clear’; CGT renders it, “indeed”, “it is true”. 
ὁ κόσμος is the subject of the negated 2nd aorist οὐκ ἔγνω (from γινώσκω) and σε the direct object. 
ἐγὼ is the emphatic subject of the 2nd aorist ἔγνων (from γινώσκω) and σε the direct object. The aorist is constative, viewing the action as a whole. 
καὶ is copulative (“and”, most translations). 
The near-demonstrative pronoun οὗτοι, referring to κἀκεῖνοι (v. 24), is the emphatic subject of the 2nd aorist ἔγνωσαν (from γινώσκω). ὅτι introduces indirect discourse after a verb of cognition. σύ is the emphatic subject of the liquid aorist ἀπέστειλας (from ἀποστέλλω) and με the direct object. 
17:26 
The indirect object of the aorist ἐγνώρισα (from γνωρίζω “I make known”) is αὐτοῖς, referring to the οὗτοι of verse 25, and the direct object is τὸ ὄνομά σου which also functions as the direct object of the future γνωρίσω (from γνωρίζω); NET: “I made known your name to them, and I will continue to make it known”. 
ἵνα + subjunctive indicates purpose, probably with both instances of γνωρίζω above. ἡ ἀγάπη is the subject of the present subjunctive ᾖ (from εἰμί); the verb is modified by the locative prepositional phrase ἐν αὐτοῖς. The relative clause defines ἡ ἀγάπη; the relative pronoun ἣν functions as cognate accusative of the aorist ἠγάπησάς (from ἀγαπάω) which adds emphasis (“to love a love”); NRSV: “the love with which you have loved me”. με is the direct object. κἀγὼ (crasis of καὶ + ἐγώ) indicates a second purpose after ἵνα. κἀγὼ is the subject of an implied present subjunctive ὦ, modified by the locative prepositional phrase ἐν αὐτοῖς.
